01 Kolkata Museum of Modern Art Architectural Thesis Project “Art doesn’t transform. It just plain forms.” -Roy Lichtenstein

Modern Art

About the Project

Building on late nineteenth-century precedents, artists around the world used new imagery, materials and techniques to create artworks that they felt better reflected the realities and hopes of modern societies.

Kolkata Museum Of Modern Art is a tripartite venture between the Govt. of West Bengal, the Govt. of India and the private sector.

Principles that define Modern art: ▪▪ A rejection of history and conservative values (such as realistic depiction of subjects) ▪▪ Innovation and experimentation with form (the shapes, colours and lines that make up the work) with a tendency to abstraction ▪▪ Emphasis on materials, techniques and processes ▪▪ Expansive characteristic

Its objective is to bring, under a single roof, two broad areas of work: ▪▪ collection & preservation ▪▪ exhibition of fine art objects, both from India and abroad, dating from the late 18th century to the contemporary times Promoting art education and research. It has been planned as a cultural hub on a grand scale, free from any parochial agenda.

Concept Principles of the building housing Modern Style art and craft from this country and abroad, must reflect on the same line as the art in it. Providing a sense of understanding towards the time and era it is holding in. Reflecting its purpose in its form and exterior. Modern style in architecture is depicted as:

1. Lack of Ornamentation (simplified and clean aesthetic where materials meet in simple, well-executed joints.)

2. Emphasis of rectangular forms and horizontal and vertical lines (Materials are often used in well-defined planes and vertical forms juxtaposed against horizontal elements for dramatic effect.)

Advance Objective Lighting scheme used for exhibition rooms in museums is made up of Diffuse and Directional light. ▪▪

Exhibit Lighting requires hard-edged Directional light to accentuate individual items on display.

▪▪

Room Lighting requires soft Diffused lighting for basic view of the space without disturbing the effects of Exhibit light. The most suitable and energy saving method for Diffused lighting is through Natural Lighting.

1. Providing Clerestory as the means of Natural lighting

Artificial means of lighting is the best way to provide Directional lighting.

2. Spot Lamps for Directional Lighting

Form Evolution

Taking a Gallery unit of (10x10)m, repeating it and forming a module of three.

Repeating the module of three further in alternating fashion. This pattern provides maximum number of surfaces to penetrate Natural light in.

Repeating the module of three vertically as well as horizontally. This way identity of each surface remains entact and are available for penetrating Natural light through them.

Design for Better Living Experience

Site Zoning

High rise buildings lack the feeling of natural open spaces, in this design following elements are incorporated to provide comfort and nature friendly environment to the inhabitants:

Physical divide in the site creates an opportunity to provide necessary bifurcation in this community housing.

▪▪ ▪▪ ▪▪ ▪▪ ▪▪ ▪▪

Three side openings Open corridors 20% Green cover Activity and leisure belt midway in the 3BHK apartment all around the western site. Hanging gardens or creepers Interesting shading devices that allow decorative percolation of light inside the rooms.

Although it is a firm belief that all people are equal and as architects we design for everyone’s comfort, but in the context of different communities living together, there is often a dire need to create a suitable clusters and divides along the proper community spaces that would lead to a semi secluded public interaction. This leads to broadly classify the two sites into lower-middle income groups and the higher income group.
