Ex. Secretary Jeff Ebert Hello Shropshire Breeders, First off let me apologize for the delay in the Shropshire Voice this issue. Sometimes life gets in the way of the best laid plans. With that said it has been another strong year for Shropshires. Registration and transfer numbers have remained somewhat steady. Sales and shows were competitive again in 2025 and numbers at Louisville remain strong. Remember all registry work needs to be mailed to ASRA, 10015 Flush Road, St. George, KS 66535 or emailed to nationalsheepregistry@gmail.com. My cell phone is 785-458-9174 and I will answer it most anytime from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM Monday-Friday. I am still working on office hours but if you call and get my voice mail, please leave a message and I will return your call as soon as possible. Hopefully, your fall lambs are looking good and are growing well. We hope you have an enjoyable holiday season with family and friends. As the calendar turns to 2026 hopefully the new flock additions exceed your expectations and you make plans to enter some in the spring sales. Make plans to advertise in the spring Shropshire Voice which will be out in early April.

There will only be one Shropshire Voice publication printed in the spring as the ASRA voted to go to two magazines a year.The deadline for the April magazine will be Feb. 25 for all advertising, photos and news. The publisher plans to have the book out ahead of the shows and sales in April so the deadline must be followed! You can start placing your ads now for that issue. Board of Directors Meetings May 4, 2025 The meeting was called to order by President Billy Bryant at 7:06 PM. Board members on the call included Billy Bryant, Jon Nicholson, Rick Whiting, Wyatt Graves, Caleb Fritz, Will Christensen, Mandy Curtis, Mike Elsbury,Ashley Fuss, Jason Heeg, Jared Poynter, Danny Rogers, Charlotte Stephenson and Carol Slutz. Jeff Ebert, Executive Secretary, was also on the call. Jared Poynter moved, and Jon Nicholson seconded, to approve the February board of directors meeting minutes. Motion passed. Jared Poynter moved, and Carol Slutz seconded, to approve the financial report. Motion passed. Committee reports were heard. No action was taken. Ashley Fuss moved that the DNA Committee come up with research documents on the dwarf gene so an accurate decision could be

made going forward. Mike Elsbury seconded. Motion passed. Charlotte Stephenson moved, and Rick Whiting seconded, that the spring issue of the Shropshire Voice be printed in April. Motion passed. Danny Rogers moved to put $30,000 in CDs at Bennington State Bank. Mike Elsbury seconded the motion. The motion was amended by Jared Poynter, and seconded by Jon Nicholson, to put $15,000 in a one-year CD and $15,000 in a two-year CD. Both the amendment and amended motion passed. Jon Nicholson moved, Jared Poynter seconded, to change the name of the royalty to Junior and Senior Ambassadors. Motion passed. Charlotte Stephenson moved to table the Shropshire Breed Integrity Program until the next meeting. Danny Rogers seconded the motion. Motion passed. Mike Elsbury moved, and Jared Poynter seconded, that the next board meeting be on June 29. Motion passed. Jon Nicholson moved that questions and comments about the Shropshire Breed Integrity Program be submitted by May 31. Motion passed. Mike Elsbury moved to adjourn. Wyatt Graves seconded the motion. Rick Whiting, moved and Jared Poynter seconded, that we have someone monitor the belly and leg wool for the junior show at Louisville. Motion passed Jared Poynter, moved and Charlotte Stephenson seconded, that we offer the person monitor the belly and leg wool $50. Motion passed. Discussion was held on the DNA proposal submitted by committee. Jared Poynter moved, and Charlotte Stephenson seconded, that discussion on the DNA proposal be postponed indefinitely. Motion failed. Carol Slutz moved, and Jon Nicholson second, for a call to vote on the DNA proposal. Motion failed. Mike Elsbury moved to adjourn the meeting. Seconded by Danny Rogers. 2025 National Shropshire Princess Hello! My name is Michaela Haudenschield and I am your 2025 National Shropshire Princess. I would like to tell you a little about myself and how I got involved in the Shropshire breed. It started in 2023 when I applied for the Shropshire Starter Flock Award and I was blessed to win it. That’s where my love for this breed began to grow and is still growing today. In 2024, I applied in my home state for the Ohio Shropshire Enrichment Flock Award and received it and with that award I was able to purchase my futurity ewe which we placed 5th Overall in the National Shropshire Futurity. Also in 2024, I became the 2024 Shropshire Bo Peep. This leads me to this year where I became the Shropshire Princess. I would like to tell you about my journey this summer promoting the Shropshire breed. I stated out at the Ohio Sale watching and handing out awards at their show. I moved on to the lead shows in Ohio, showing my own ewe lambs. I also got the opportunity to go to Illinois to the All-American Junior Sheep Show, and then back to Ohio State Fair. I can’t forget my local county fairs and I
Michaela Haudenschield also participated in a few parades. I can’t wait in a few days to travel to the North American International Livestock Exposition in Louisville, Kentucky. I would like to wish all exhibitors the best of luck and safe travels on your way to Louisville!

Dale’s dedication to the Shropshire breed and the sheep industry spans decades of hard work and leadership. After his younger sister left for college, Dale took over his family’s flock, working tirelessly to improve it by acquiring and breeding several renowned rams. His commitment to the breed went hand-in-hand with his academic journey—Dale graduated as valedictorian from Blackburn College, earned a PhD in inorganic chemistry from the University of Virginia, and later pursued veterinary medicine at the University of Illinois. Throughout his veterinary career in McHenry County, Dale remained deeply connected to his flock, often driving hours back home to assist with lambing and farm duties. His passion for Shropshire sheep led him to become a guiding figure for new breeders and a key advocate for the breed’s promotion and advancement. He also served as the breed’s secretary for several years, where he worked tirelessly behind the scenes to keep the association running smoothly and to support its members. Dale played a pivotal role in helping the _______ Page 12
Shropshire Association navigate challenging times, including the slick shearing debate, and contributed to the development of spider syndrome and scrapie tests. His legacy is built on his unwavering support for breeders, both new and experienced. He personally engaged with each breeder through thoughtful correspondence and invested countless hours, alongside his mother Elsie, into the association. Dale was also instrumental in starting the Shropshire Youth Scholarship and junior activities at NAILE, ensuring the future of the breed and its community. His contributions have left an enduring impact on the Shropshire breed and its association.

Kent’s journey with Shropshire sheep began as a 4-H project, which quickly grew into a nationally recognized show flock. His sheep were exhibited at major shows across several states, including Illinois, Indiana, Ohio,Tennessee, Georgia, Mississippi, Missouri, and Pennsylvania, earning top honors for their quality and excellence.What started as a personal passion soon became a respected name in the industry. As a leader, Kent founded the Illinois Shropshire

Association and served as its president, building a strong community for Shropshire breeders in the state. He also contributed to the broader sheep industry as a board member of the Illinois Purebred Sheep Breeders Association, working to strengthen the voice of purebred sheep farmers. Kent’s dedication to the Shropshire breed led him to national leadership roles. In 1965, he was elected a director of the American Shropshire Registry Association (ASRA), and by 1970, he became vice president. Just a year later, at the age of 27, he made history by being elected the youngest national president in the 100-year history of the ASRA. Throughout his career, Kent’s flock earned numerous championships, including several at the state level, reflecting his skill in breeding and raising top-quality Shropshire sheep. His contributions were not limited to the show ring, as his leadership and vision for the breed shaped the direction of the ASRA and influenced breeders nationwide. Kent’s legacy is built on his passion, hard work, and dedication to the Shropshire breed. His influence in both the local and national sheep communities has left a lasting impact, and his work continues to inspire future generations of Shropshire breeders.
Tom Slutz
Tom’s journey with Shropshire sheep began in 1982 when he purchased three ewes and a ram from Ken Jorstad of Illinois, founding City Limits Sheep Farm.With over 43 years of experience, Tom has become a prominent figure in the livestock industry, building on a legacy of three generations of livestock breeders. His dedication to the breed has earned him a reputation as one of the top Shropshire breeders in the country. Tom’s competitive success is unmatched, having exhibited at major state fairs in Illinois, Indiana,Wisconsin, Ohio, and Iowa. His crowning achievement came in 1993 when

He has also claimed champion titles at the Wisconsin, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio state fairs, as well as at prestigious events like the Midwest Stud Ram Sale, Ohio Showcase, and Shropshire Spectacular. Notably, Tom’s flock has won the First Place Flock award at NAILE seven times in the past eight years. Beyond the show ring,Tom has played a significant role in leadership positions, including serving as president of the Illinois State Board. His commitment to the Shropshire breed extends to mentoring the next generation, sharing his knowledge with local FFA chapters, 4-H programs, and collegiate livestock judging teams. Tom’s influence on the industry has shaped many young livestock enthusiasts and helped advance the breed. While Tom’s competitive and leadership successes are impressive, his greatest legacy is the bond he has created with his family through their shared passion for Shropshire sheep. The connections and friendships he has made over the years are invaluable, but it is the family unity and love for the breed that Tom cherishes most.
