GoodDOGS

get many requests for dogs from other exhibitors. What I have noticed more and more lately. There’s a growing obsession with buying only a flawless, top-tier special—and it’s quietly hurting the future of good breeding.

Nearly no one seems to ask for a nice breeding-quality dog anymore.

They want it to arrive formed and conditioned, mentally bulletproof, plug-and-play perfection. Perfect this... perfect that. Perfect everything. A dog is no good if they can perceive any fault or have to do any work. They can't believe in imperfect but... they all are!

They believe money should buy a finished product... but this ain't Amazon. These are living breathing creatures.

What they don’t seem to grasp is this: even the best dog will look average in the wrong hands (and alternately very average dogs can stand out in the right hands).

The best “specials” are shaped by consistent work and conditioning of a committed owner or handler. The person on the end of the lead matters just as much as the dog—and I don't mean your face or a handler's face—I mean the work you put in to cultivate a given animal.

Great dogs that win a lot? They are made—not just born. They are a COMMITMENT.

At the end of the day, we don’t improve the gene pool by just chasing points. A dog can't produce its ribbons. We NEED people willing to breed thoughtfully, preserve genetics, keep depth in pedigrees, and do the hard, unglamorous work behind the scenes.

Good dogs belong in the gene pool, not just on the end of a lead.

“Great dogs that win a lot? They are made—not just born. They are a COMMITMENT.”

Timeless REFLECTIONS

am concerned that so many people seem to think judges’ decision’s are often based on color or handler preferences.

If we are stuck in the belief that the two most obvious variables are the sole factor in determining the winner, we are shortchanging ourselves and the breed.

Such simplistic thinking simply reinforces excuse making.

We need to look past our prejudices and preconceived notions and really try to see the virtue in the winners.

How can we learn anything if we simply attribute wins and losses to what our eyes see first?

It is time to buck up and look in depth to what can be improved in ourselves and our own animals.

Judging is a very complex and fluid task. Do not invalidate it by wearing blinders.

am always vocal in my worry about our need for immediate gratification and the many quality dogs we may lose by not waiting for them to mature.

Here is an example of a 7 months old male who was deservedly 3rd out of 3 at his first show. Two years later he won a specialty major under the same judge and two years after that, an AOM at the National, again under the same judge.

Let’s try to look past the seduction of early bloom and look to a future of beautiful, fully mature, refined representatives of our breed.

This is not to say that there are not early maturers who retain quality. Only that in our impatience, we may be losing valuable additions to our breed.

COMPETITORS AND RIVALS

LORI PELLETIER OF AVALON NORFOLK TERRIERS

“I had a little Norwich Terrier that I bred once and she was a beautiful puppy. I brought her to the shows in Chicago when they were the big huge shows. She was just over 6 months old and that weekend was her very first dog shows and she went best puppy in show over thousands of puppies. The next day she was Best Bred by Exhibitor, Best Bred by Exhibitor in Show and she finished in three shows. But the last time we were there we had a dinner and there were eight breeders at the table and they said, “Wow, what is her pedigree?” And I started laughing and they said, “Why are you laughing?” I said, because her pedigree is from five kennels that do not speak to each other. But I was lucky enough to breed those dogs together. I think that is what we have to do is truly put all of that stuff aside and truly be better people. I’m not breeding to the person, I’m breeding to the dog. Put all the rest of that away and celebrate when someone comes to breed to your dog, it’s a compliment. But truthfully, the only way to move forward is if everybody works together."

BREEDING CORRECT DOGS

LISA ROSS OF WINFREE ENGLISH COCKER SPANIELS

“I kind of got an idea of what I wanted to do. I quit trying to breed dogs to correct faults. What I ended up doing was finding the dog that I thought was the most correct in the breed standard and just continued to breed to the dogs that I thought were correct, not really focusing on trying to solve one problem or another, but just breeding correct to correct, to correct, to correct. I breed the most correct animal I can find to the animals I have."

THE IMPORTANCE OF ATTENDING YOUR NATIONAL SPECIALTY KRISTI GREEN OF KNOCKOUT CHIHUAHUAS

Kristi, as a highly accomplished breeder in your breed, can you speak to the importance of attending your breed’s national specialty?

“I think when you go back to just even the beginning of my story, me sitting ringside and I went to see a specific kennel and bloodline. I was ready to buy a bitch from that bloodline and sitting there and seeing the dogs, seeing them firsthand, nobody can photoshop a dog that’s right in front of you. They’re right there, they’re live, and it gives you the opportunity to really kind of see pedigrees before they become pedigrees. And I think that’s invaluable. The more dogs that you can touch, the more dogs that you can see, the more information you can file away about dogs that may someday be part of your family, it’s invaluable.”

“...nobody can photoshop a dog that’s right in front of you. They’re right there, they’re live, and it gives you the opportunity to really kind of see pedigrees before they become pedigrees.”

TALKING DOGS

“We breeders need to grow some thicker skin and learn to talk dogs again. I can’t count the people I’ve accidentally offended. And sometimes it’s not talking about others' dogs, it’s talking about my own dogs. Objectively and pros & cons and what I see and what I don’t like, and it just throws so many breeders aback. I’m not being critical of your dog. I am objectively discussing these individual dogs that I’m probably seriously considering integrating into my breeding program and then figure, okay, how am I going to deal with this and assimilate this? And that’s what talking dogs is. And if we’re not able to have those objective conversations about bloodstock and these living animals, you’re only hurting your own ability to breed a better dog.”

WHAT TO FOCUS ON

What do you believe your fellow breeders should be most focused on right now?

“I think there are a lot of people that really need to go back and learn about structure and what is right, and learn about good feelings, what feels good, and know what an upper arm is, and know what layback is. And be honest with themselves. If you can’t be honest with yourself because you don’t know, then you aren’t going to get any better.”

PARTNERSHIPS WITH OTHER BREEDERS

“Establishing those partnerships with other breeders that have their line is extremely valuable when breeding dogs because you don’t have to go there just once. You can go there multiple times a few generations down. They go and do a couple of their own breedings, you go and do a couple of your own breedings. Sometimes they do some different outcrosses and you do some different outcrosses. And then together you can come back together and you can make sweet magic.”

THEY ARE NOT ALL STARS

“So being able to understand what you’re working with in your line, grow them up and give them time. I promise you, they are not all stars that come out of the kennel. We go through dogs, we grow dogs up. Some dogs, I always say this, I like their pedigree more than I like them. So in our breeding program, I’m going to grow them up and I’m going to get them finished and I’m going to health test them and I’m going to use them.”

“For our bitches, if I love the pedigree more than I love her, I know that maybe if she’s bred the right way I can get something that I’m looking for. And we do that and I’ll be honest with you, those have been some of our best brood bitches and stud dogs. It’s not always the most glamorous brother or sister or whatever like that. Sometimes it’s the one that you just finished and you’ve bred and you placed them and that’s part of being a breeder. You can’t just keep that one puppy at eight weeks because you thought that puppy was going to be the pick of the litter.”

FUTURITY JUDGE—CADIE PRUSS

It was such an honor to be nominated and then selected to judge the next generation of Shelties. I felt that the quality was deep and more than once I wished the futurity classes were divided by color so more of these beautiful puppies could come back for the final line-up. Many people commented to me that I smiled the whole time. I truly enjoyed the opportunity. I looked for, and found, virtue in each exhibit without exception. Each of my placements excelled in type, structure and movement, body symmetry, and expression.

As I was preparing to judge, I was thinking that I was going to have to find the one or two good fronts, and puppies with full dentition. I was pleased to find many puppies from which to choose meeting these criteria. With fronts, I was particularly pleased with the 6-9 Month Puppy Bitch class which stood out as a group and made me excited about this youngest generation. Temperaments were solid and the puppies handled the day as if they had been there for a week, not just arriving. Prior to awarding the Runner-up and Best in Futurity ribbons, I did ask the audience to begin applauding so as not to startle the puppies. I have long felt that we do the finalists a disservice when the ring gets really quiet and then erupts in applause and yelling when the winner is revealed. I didn’t see any of my finalists exhibit a fearful response, and I credit both the solid temperaments of the dogs, and the advanced applauding of the spectators.

Another alteration I made was that the six finalists were brought into the ring in age order.

The two 12-18 month olds, dog then bitch, came first, followed by 9-12 month, dog then bitch, followed by 6-9 month, dog then bitch. I have never liked having the 6-9 month old puppy dog being “chased” by the 12-18 month bitch, and I feel that it puts both of those two puppies at a potential disadvantage as the puppy dog might react negatively and the puppy bitch might not be able to move out as fully as she is able as a result. When viewing the finalists in this lineup, I was very pleased to see that these six finalists did indeed look appropriately “masculine” and “feminine” without size being a factor in that determination. Our breed is lucky to have many dedicated individuals who work very hard all year long to ensure the National is both a success and a positive experience. As a past National Show Chair, I know this task is challenging. My sincerest thanks to Sheryl Kendrick and Flint Maxcy for your full year of work to make a week run smoothly. Marjorie Tuff and Janell Lowman, our amazing ring stewards and their crew, keep the ring organized and on-time thank you. A special thank you to Ellen Worthington for ensuring I had everything I needed and to Katrina Stewart for being my traveling companion, assistant, and a full-week ring steward as well.

Of course, it takes more than just these fabulous named individuals to pull off a week of events, and to everyone who is part of the planning and “doing” Thank You. I truly enjoyed the experience.

DOGS JUDGE—LIZ BIANCHI

Iam truly grateful to the membership for voting for me to judge at our National. It was an honor indeed, to see so many fine exhibits.

I recently chatted with a “prospective” Sheltie judge, and they asked, “So do you judge on the head, or on movement?” I explained that the entire dog is judged, the combination of symmetry, expression, and soundness. Of course, the details are not that simple; one must truly understand and appreciate the elements of our breed.

I observed the balance and outline of each exhibit, looking for graceful curves and balance, and the first goaround the ring. I like to see how each dog presents himself, placement of front and rear legs, how the neck is held, and use of ears. By and large, most of the entry had a steady temperament, and enthusiasm to be in the ring.

The table provided the hands-on to examine the contours and chiseling of the head, and to look for the long, blunt wedge tapering slightly from the ears to nose. I was pleased to see a number with flat cheeks, and skulls. In profile I found a number with parallel planes and good underjaw. When checking bites, I found only some with missing teeth. Many had an almond-shaped eye, and dark eyes, or blue in the blue merles. Ears were generally good, small, flexible and breaking forward. Expression was observed on the ground.

And with the “hands-on” I found exhibits with correct angulation of the shoulders, allowing front legs to be well set under the withers. Rears were generally good, muscular thighs, and short hocks. There were some shorter tails, though.

I did see outlines that were undesirable, either too long in body, or too short on leg, affecting the ideal balance I wanted to see. Some dogs had a too steep a croup. Coats were of generally good quality, harsh outer hair and softer, denser undercoats. The coat colors were great. A few were overgroomed (product perhaps?) and obvious body scissoring.

While observing gait, I found several that possessed smoothness, carried their head forward, feet close to the ground, in an effortless motion, and showed convergence. Age can affect gait, and I did see some happy feet. My class Winners were all worthy of major points. I pulled five dogs that I felt were standouts: the two 6-9 month Puppies, the 12-18 month Sable dog, the Open Blue dog, and the Open Sable dog. Ultimately, I had to go with the Open Sable Dog. He was the total package! Balance, outline, expression, and carriage gave him the win that day. Reserve went to the 12-18 Month Dog, who made a similar impression.

It was a pleasure to judge so many good dogs. Following are a few brief comments about the virtues of some of the exhibits in the various classes.

JBITCHES JUDGE - MR. DAVID CALDERWOOD

udging the National ASSA show is an honor, and I thank you for the honor of judging your bitches. I was very pleased that the quality of the bitches I found made it very easy to virtue judge, as the overall quality was far higher than I had originally anticipated!

I began to learn Shelties in early 1973 and began handling them in 1975! When I became a Professional Handler, I always had Shelties in my string of dogs and believe me, the breed is in far better shape now than it was back in those days! From this experience, I’d have to say the breed is in better shape than even 10 years ago! I was especially pleased that I found a number of very good fronts, side movement and overall type, including head detail — as well as the balance of length of body to height—and that goes for all classes from the youngest puppies up through the veteran bitch classes!

When I first walk into the ring and look at a class, I’m looking at the outline and for what I consider proper balance which includes the curves from the head, down over the neck to the topline and down over the croup to the hocks! It’s easy to see the approximate front angulation depending on where the front legs drop down from the body and if everything else falls into place, often that first look will give a ballpark idea of structure. Then I walk down the line and look at expression! The first move around the ring is as much to loosen the exhibits up as much as it is to see the side movement. The exam on the table puts the pieces together with a close exam, and it can often change my initial impression as grooming in this breed can create illusions that may or may not hold true! The down and back and around either confirms my opinion or changes it for the positive or the negative!

When discussing movement, I’m looking for ‘efficiency’—which means to cover more ground with the least waste motion! Waste motion robs energy, and rolling, bouncing and swinging from side to side is all waste motion! However, since we want to judge the ‘whole dog’, the individual pieces and how they work together as well as type is also important!

When it came to overall movement, I did see some rolling as well as some bouncing when moving from the side and not all were the best coming and going. However, we always want to find the perfect dog, but since that will seldom happen, a judge needs to know where they will give a little to get something else. I tend to give a little on the down and back to get better in other areas, including structure, side movement, overall type and temperament.

When discussing side movement, we not only want good reach and drive, but we also want good foot timing! Some were better than others in foot timing, but I did see a lot of very good reach and drive. Good foot timing not only depends on a good front, but also depends on the balance between the front, the length of loin, a correct croup, the angle of femur, stifle and hock!

On the go-around, I was exceptionally pleased that many were very, very good in both foot timing and good reach and drive!

2025 NATIONAL JUDGES’ CRITIQUES

We also must remember what we find on the table doesn’t always compute to what we see on the ground or on the move! On the table, we judge pieces, but we need to remember that those pieces make up the ‘whole dog’ and must work together! On the ground we see how the pieces work together to make up that whole dog in both temperament and overall movement! Over the years I’ve also learned that not only the structure, muscles and ligaments but the temperament can also affect movement - both positively and negatively – as can handling!

I should explain what “type” means to me in a Sheltie! Type means head detail as well as balance of length of leg to length of overall body – and that includes length of neck! If we have good length of leg to length of body but with a short neck, the dog will still look out of balance – and possibly not move as well from the side as the structure would indicate! The reason why we want good balance, including balance of length neck is because a short neck has short muscles attached to that neck. It’s the same with the front scapula and humerus as well as correct post-sternum, depth chest and spring of ribs. Short bones indicate short muscles, and a shelly body indicates other issues. We can have a well laid-back scapula, but if that scapula is too short -- then short muscles are attached to it, which will restrict front reach even though that scapula is well laid back! A round rib cage will usually indicate elbows and a shelly rib cage indicates close or swinging in the front!

When looking for head detail, we not only want equal length of muzzle to the back skull but as per the standard, we also want parallel head planes and “refined when viewed from the top as well as the side”. I found many bitches with this excellent head type and proper chiseling with good stops and beautiful expressions with “almond eyes and ears tipping forward”! The one area that I could have seen improvement was in finish of muzzle. Most were good but some could have been better. However, I was very pleased that I found many with flat top skulls – some better than others, but a few were really bad. I also was very pleased that I found well rounded muzzles and not a lot of missing teeth or poor occlusion. I only found one bitch where I knocked her down to one lower placement because of too many missing molars. I’m not a “tooth fairy” in that a couple of missing pre-molars don’t tend to bother me, simply because Shelties don’t tend to use their teeth to move the stock out of the garden – and I feel we have more important things to consider such as temperament, overall structure and type. Too many missing molars is another story and far more serious but pre-molars – not so much. At least in my opinion!

I was exceptionally pleased that I had a large number of excellent side movers in the classes as well as in my final line-up, and I feel that was due to the many good fronts and overall good balance! I don’t feel I had a bad croup in any of the bitches I judged – so I’ll leave that out in my descriptions, as all were the 30 degrees I look for! Not only did the final line-up have good structure as well as excellent type involving overall balance, temperament and head detail! Some were a little better than others but some of the virtue needed hands-on in order to appreciate why they made the final line-up!

As a handler and breeder, I can’t tell you enough that you’ve really done an excellent job of improving this breed from what I remember back in the early 70’s. Congratulations on a job well done!

WINNERS BITCH

WESTPOINTE’S GARDEN OF EDEN

(Open, Sable and White Bitches)

CH Laureate Opus One - Westpointe Artistic Expression

Breeder/Owner: Linda Poirier

In winners bitch, it was a thrill as a judge to see the ring filled with such quality! There wasn’t a poor mover in the bunch and all had type. I realize this was the cream of the crop but from the depth of quality I had in the ring, I truly feel this breed is so much better than it was 10 or 15 years ago! There were several in the ring that could have won it all, but I could only chose one and the stunning Open Sable and White bitch, Westpointe’s Garden of Eden, was my winners bitch!

RESERVE WINNERS BITCH

JESSTAR CAPTIVA

By GCH Miqelon Eye Spy - CH Jesstar Wanderlust

Breeder/Owner: Jessica Starbuck-Russell

My reserve winners bitch was also a stunning heart throb—the Bi-black Open Black Bitch, Jesstar Captiva. She was also a standout with her outline, and she was absolutely dripping in breed type!

If I could have given a 3rd place behind my Reserve Winners Bitch, it would have gone to the Novice bitch, Donlyns Bi Moonlight. As I said in my description, she didn’t catch my eye in the class before I got her on the table, but her quality was undeniable once I got my hands on her and watched her move!

BEST OF BREED JUDGE—BELLA THOMPSON CORWIN

What an incredible experience judging the National, and to see, feel, and evaluate the Best of the Best, was truly a thrill. I would like to comment to all those that brought their prized dogs that I was honored for the privilege that you bestowed me. My goal was to hold the betterment of the breed foremost at all times. I believe that all the winners possessed balance, a lovely outline, soundness of mind and body, and that quintessential sheltieness that we all love. I was looking for a good moving dog that could work well and yet catch your eye for its beauty, lightness of head, and sturdy appearance. The following dogs, I feel, did just that.

BOB CH MYSTIC SUNTIME SUPERNOVA—This dog caught my eye from the moment he walked in the ring, and each time after that. Being the one in my mind that each other had to try and surpass. He was masculine but not overdone and covered the ground effortlessly. He owned the space he was in and seemed to enjoy every moment in the ring. His head felt chiseled with clear corners and yet a gentle, alert and eager expression. He was light of foot and balanced from all angles. By CH Sunaire Mainstay Integrity - GCH Mystic Suntime Be Anything | Breeder: Tracy Robinson & Ni Yadong Owner: Petra Skapa & Donna Roadhouse

BOW WESTPOINTE’S GARDEN OF EDEN—This little bitch was clean and light of head with an effervescent personality and perfectly fitted coat in great condition. She loved every minute in the ring and was not shy to express her excitement over the big event. She has a great mover particularly on the go around. Her overall typiness stuck with me. By CH Laureate Opus One - Westpointe Artistic Expression | Breeder/Owner: Linda Poirier

BOS CH SHAIZACH THE MARVELOUS MRS. MAISEL—This bitch was statuesque with an elegance that caught my eye instantly. She was flashy and had a beautiful red coat, but it was her air of regalness that caught my attention. She had a lovely headpiece with tight lipline, dark eyes and lovely earset that framed her head perfectly. She had good legs and always placed her feet correctly. She had a nice long stride with a strong and level back. I knew from the start she would be one of my favorites. By CH Trevanne’s Love Somebody - Shaizach ArtemisiaBy GCH Laureate Insignia - GCH Amber Hill Island Breeze | Breeder/Owner: Ann Lyman & Roy LymanBreeder/Owner: Rebecca Jarit & Paddy Jarit

SELECT DOG GCH AMBER HILL BEACH BOY—This dog is an honest dog with a natural beauty that you can’t deny. He is balanced from front to rear with an easy stride. He has good angulation with plenty of substance to carry his frame. He is not overdone in any way and has that classic look that is hard to find in a dog of this quality. His expression was soft and muzzle well rounded, head clean all the way to backskull with coat of correct texture and fit. By GCH Laureate Insignia - GCH Amber Hill Island Breeze | Breeder/Owner: Ann Lyman & Roy Lyman

SELECT BITCH CH ROSMOOR DEL MAR—Lovely bi-blue bitch with a refined head that was clean and flat from all sides with a light foot when in motion. She was young and yet acted like a seasoned show dog. This bitch was fluid with all parts fitting the whole. She was moderate, and elegant with an inquisitive expression. She stood out from the crowd, everything a bitch should be. By CH Macdega Last Tango - GCH Rosmoor Folklore | Breeder/Owner: Jennie Hynes & Rose Tomlin & Katie Grohowalski & Kate Hynes

In parting, I would like to note that we have come a long way in our breed in my almost 40 years involvement. Temperaments are much improved as is consistency of breed type and overall beauty. In my estimation, we still need to work on our fronts, with proper angulation and depth of chest. Dentition, although better than 10 years ago, still could use some attention for improvement, and I am always surprised when I see dirty teeth in the show ring. To all of you that have placed importance on the betterment of the breed, thank you. Our breed is strong and flourishing.
