Tacoma Art Museum debuts Project NW: Ralph Pugay, as part of the artist-led series dedicated to regional contemporary art. TAM Curator of Collections, including Project NW, Ellen Ito, notes, “With an emphasis on artists’ voice and vision, Project NW highlights the depth and range of artistic expression in the region. Ralph Pugay’s practice is thrilling—always in motion, constantly evolving. His deft hand with world-building and ability to source humor from the most unexpected places is truly unique.”
This exhibition, A Looser Understanding, approaches meaning as something that unfolds gradually rather than arriving all at once. “I’m interested in how meaning resists being pinned down,” says Ralph Pugay. “The work invites viewers to linger in uncertainty, to notice how humor, memory, and contradiction can coexist without needing resolution. For me, that openness feels closer to how we actually experience the world—messy, layered, and full of unexpected connections.”
It is about understanding forms through repetition, proximity, and partial attention—through what gathers over time instead of what resolves immediately. Memory, humor, and contradiction coexist without hierarchy, allowing the senses to remain flexible and responsive rather than fixed.
Artist Ralph Pugay was born in Cavite, Philippines in 1983, and currently lives

and works in Portland, Oregon. Pugay builds nonlinear worlds shaped by humor, contradiction, and the layered noise of contemporary culture. His works often unfold as loose fables or openended situations in which everyday absurdities, digital residue, and emotional undercurrents gather without insisting on resolution. Humor moves through the work as both tenderness and friction, allowing moments of surprise, discomfort, and care to coexist. His work has received notable accolades and has been exhibited widely.
For 90 years Tacoma Art Museum has continued to be the leading resource
for art of the Pacific Northwest.
TAM’s mission is to transform our communities by sharing art that inspires broader perspectives and cultivates a compassionate future. Along with evolving exhibits, TAM’s collection of glass art by Tacoma native Dale Chihuly is the largest retrospective collection on permanent view and displays one of the finest collections of Japanese woodblock prints on the West Coast.
TAM is in the heart of Tacoma’s vibrant Museum District, which consists of six museums.

At a young age, Gabi Galloway, the new Executive Director of the Auburn Symphony Orchestra, fell in love with the arts. The Fort Worth, Texas native went to California’s School of the Arts for her higher education and then returned to Texas to work at an art school there. When an opportunity for her husband to work in his field opened in the Puget Sound, the young couple jumped at the chance to move to Washington State. “We love it here and had always targeted the region as a place we wanted to retire. We were just able to move up the timing,” said Galloway.
Her own job search led her to the Auburn Symphony Orchestra. “There were so many green flags when I was researching the position. A great board of directors and the artistry performed at such a professional level, especially for a local group,” Galloway said.

Galloway, “I love being able to support young artists and through programs like Link Up, I can continue to grow the sense of connection here in Auburn.”
As the former Individual Giving Director, Gallway’s promotion to Executive Director allows for continuity of the goals and programs in place. With a goal of keeping things that work and growing them, Galloway hopes to grow deeper roots in the community. According to
Link Up is a program that brings hands-on music learning from the classroom to the concert hall. Designed by Carnegie Hall’s Weill Music Institute, the program is open to all fourth-grade music classes in Auburn School District and Muckleshoot Tribal
School. The culminating performance gives students the opportunity to sing, play, and dance along with Auburn Symphony Orchestra, performing the music they have practiced throughout the year.
Under Music Director and Conductor, Wesley Schulz, the Auburn Symphony Orchestra will present several programs in 2026 including Summit, Myths & Music on March 29th , a celebration of America as we approach our 250th anniversary, and Mozart Requiem on May 3rd , a powerful choral collaboration with Seattle Pro Musica. With the talents of core members from the Northwest Ballet Orchestra, Auburn Symphony Orchestra performs at the Auburn Performing Arts Center in downtown Auburn.
Galloway added, “I am excited to bring people together through world-class music. I want to make it accessible and meaningful for our community and for them to feel welcome.”

With an unwavering commitment to the power of play and learning, Greentrike continues to grow and improve their programs around Tacoma and JBLM. This commitment comes from thinking through what barriers exist and finding ways to create access for everyone.
Celebrating their 40th anniversary, Greentrike is a nonprofit that advocates for and models equitable access to playful experiences for children, youth, and families — because play is essential for learning, joy, and a thriving community. This philosophy is exemplified by their ‘Pay As You Will’ program, a donation-only admission policy at their two museum locations that increases access to high-quality playful experiences for families. “Another component of our model is creating multi-generational play that encourages resilient relationships,” said Alyssa Tongue, Chief Learning Experiences Officer at Greentrike.

“Through generous donations from our community, Greentrike provides wrap-around support and an invitation to come and play with no admission.”
With two museums, one in downtown Tacoma and one on the JBLM base, Greentrike also supports a variety of programs in Pierce County. Play to Learn is a free program for children and adults to play together that is offered at community locations throughout Pierce County. Greentrike operates Preschool Powered by Play, now located at the Children’s Museum of Tacoma campus and the Monarch Diaper program, where families receive diapers and wipes at no charge.
“Play to Learn and the Monarch Diaper Bank are free resources that are important for so many families impacted by the expensive life we live right now, because they aren’t covered by any other program,” said Tongue. She added,
Greentrike has been led for 29 years by their CEO, Tanya Durand, who recently announced her retirement. According to Tongue, “Tanya was a huge gift to this organization and while we look forward to welcoming new leadership, her retirement is bittersweet.”
Going forward, the new leadership will be overseeing the one-of-a-kind play areas at their two locations as well as the fundraising, design and fabrication of an all-new learning water feature at the Tacoma location. The Greentrike Board ensures that play is a right for every child in our community. v LYNN CASTLE

A new NCAA-approved soccer field, located on South Puget Sound Community College’s (SPSCC) Olympia campus, will serve as the home field for both SPSCC’s Clipper Soccer and local path to pro soccer club FC Olympia. This collaboration marks a significant milestone in expanding soccer opportunities for youth and adults across Thurston County.
“This home field partnership will create new soccer pathways from youth to adults in our soccer community,” said Ryan Perkins, president of FC Olympia and the Oly Soccer Foundation. “We’re excited to provide expanded soccer programming and strengthen our ties with SPSCC’s Clipper Athletics in the process.”
“Soccer has been prevalent on South Puget Sound’s campus for a very long time with the men’s soccer program being the very first program ever established here in 1988 and now we recently established our women’s program here in 2021,” said SPSCC Athletic Director Vernell Willingham. “It showcases the presence we want to have in the soccer community here in the capitol region.”
The two groups plan to host training and matches for both groups, physical education classes, a variety of camps and clinics, and more. The shared vision will bring more families onto SPSCC’s campus and expand access

to their vibrant soccer community and pathways to higher education.
“I’m very excited to partner with FC Olympia to help expand our community resources here in the region,” continued Willingham. “This partnership makes sense in that we both assist in developing young adult athletes and even tapping into youth levels, which is something we’ve been trying to do for a long time.”
“I personally can’t wait to see all the youth soccer players and families on campus and expanding soccer for our community through this collaboration with the college,” added Perkins. “We at FC Olympia want to thank Dave Pelkey and Vernell Willingham for their
stewardship with this turf soccer field alliance and are especially thankful for their belief in our ‘Path to Pro’ soccer system.”
Wembley Soccer Shop has stepped up as the fields’ first sponsor partner by sourcing equipment for the field. Wembley has served the Olympia soccer community for 30 years with jersey, apparel, gear, and premier equipment for clubs and facilities. As a firm timeline is established, additional sponsors will have the opportunity to engage for more community visibility. v

As Spring settles over our area, the farmers markets come alive with color, community, and the unmistakable scent of fresh produce. These markets aren’t just places to shop—they’re weekly celebrations of local agriculture, creativity, and connection.
In Pierce County, markets stretch from the shores of Gig Harbor to the foothills of Mount Rainier. The Proctor Farmers Market in Tacoma, one of the region’s few year -round markets, buzzes with activity even in winter, offering everything from crisp apples to artisan cheeses. With the Lakewood Farmers Market set in a large community park, this market enjoys a relaxed, festival feel. You’ll find fresh produce, food trucks, and handmade crafts. Often featured are live music, family games, and a large grassy area perfect for a picnic.
Come summer, the energy expands across the County. The Gig Harbor Waterfront Farmers Market fills Thursdays with live music, fresh produce and fruit, and handmade goods, while the Puyallup Farmers Market transforms Pioneer Park
into a bustling hub of growers, bakers, and crafters.
Just south in Thurston County, the rhythm of local food culture is just as strong. Olympia’s long-running markets anchor the scene, but summer brings a constellation of additional options. The Thurston County Night Market, highlighted as a rising favorite, blends traditional farm stands with food trucks, local artists, and family-friendly entertainment—turning a simple shopping trip into an evening out. Across the county, weekend markets offer heirloom vegetables, fresh-cut flowers, and smallbatch goods that reflect the creativity of South Sound makers.
Whether you’re searching for the perfect berries, hoping to support small farms, or simply craving a sense of community, your local farmers markets offer a vibrant, ever-changing taste of the Pacific Northwest. Each visit is a reminder that local food isn’t just about what’s on the table—it’s about the people, land, and stories behind every harvest.

DOS HERMANOS MEXICAN KITCHEN

Augustin and Lupe Galicia brought their family recipes to the 222 Market Building in 2018 and opened Dos Hermanos Mexican Kitchen. You’ll recognize items on the menu like tacos and chile verde, but Dos Hermanos offers more that you might expect. Everything is made from scratch. Corn and flour tortillas are made from organic ingredients. The refried beans come from beans soaked overnight rather than a can. Additionally, the Galicias operate the business with their youngest son, Adrian, and two longtime employees, Andres and Blandina. This welcoming team is always there to serve consistently well-prepared meals and cocktails.
“We take no shortcuts and use fresh ingredients. It is organic corn for tacos and organic unbleached flour for the flour tortillas. We take the seeds from
the peppers when we make our sauces,” explains Augustin. Tending to all these details brings exquisite textures and flavors to every dish. “It’s a lot of work,” he adds, and it’s just what they do at Dos Hermanos.
Though Augustin was born in the U.S, his younger years were spent in Mexico. He helped his parents with their taco stand, learning every job it involved. At 13, he returned to Los Angeles and joined the army at 18 for what was expected to be a three-to-four-year stint. It turned into a 21-year career.
Upon retirement, the Galicias moved back to Lacey where they owned a home. They opened a Mexican food truck at JBLM whose popularity led to a second truck. For five years, they primarily served their well-tested, authentic recipes to military personnel.

The art-filled, comfy eatery has tables, a bar counter, and is suitable for a date night, a family meal, or a small party. There is a menu of margaritas along with beer and wine. It’s located at 222 Capitol Way which is also home to Sofie’s Scoops, The Bread Peddler, Chelsea Farms Oyster Bar and Fleurae Floral.
Historic downtown Olympia is filled with locally owned businesses that keep our community vibrant. Parking is free after 5:00pm and on weekends. It is worth your time to explore. Be sure to bring your appetite.

Design: Artisans Group Architecture + Planning & Sparrow Design Photography: Kara Mercer
Manifesting your dream home may take the work of a team. Owners of an 11,000 square-foot house wanted to transform an unremarkable, though remarkably large, building into a relaxing, functional home. Roussa Cassel, a principal of Artisans Group Architecture + Planning, handled the structural elements of wall moving, elevator installing, permitting and related issues. Sparrow Design worked with the owners over a period of three years to achieve the goals
both inside and outside. “It was fun to catch the whole vision,” says Cassel.
People are looking for new solutions to housing. Remote work requires a home office. Extended family members may want to live together. Single people may share with one or more people to be able to afford a private home. Elders may require proximity to the rest of the family. This lodge-like home was an
opportunity for one group of people to design individual and communal spaces in creative ways. They set to work to re-do the property from top to bottom.
The home now consists of four suites, which added bathrooms and a spa with a stone soaking tub. Family and friends have fun in the game room, enjoy snacks in the ice cream parlor or quietly read in the library. The commercial, chefinspired kitchen is a shared space. An elevator and dumb waiter were installed. The back deck became a spectacular usable space with a full kitchen, and the deck floor was level with the house floor for easy access. These elements were done with aging-in-place in mind. A chiropractic studio with public entrance was configured on the front side of the house. The team worked to harmonize varying tastes to form a cohesive living environment.
Sparrow Design planned for layered window treatments, custom rugs, appropriate lighting and new furniture. Art was commissioned to emphasize the glorious Pacific Northwest. Landscape designers crafted and installed alpineinspired environments.
Most importantly, the team worked with the owners to understand their hopes and ideas in order to tailor every detail. “The transformation is really astounding,” says Cassel. Trust your imagination to skilled professionals at Artisans Group Architecture + Planning and Sparrow Design Company.

When Judith Hoffman lost her husband in the Spring of 2025, she knew one thing. She wanted to sell her home of 38 years fast. “I remember meeting Kathy and Susan of Team RED at one of their Downsizers events at Wesley Homes, and when Kathy asked how soon I wanted to sell I told her yesterday,” said Judith. After a quick giggle, the team set out to make that wish a reality.
Hoffman utilized Team RED’s signature senior transition services, that included a full-service project management approach and had the five-bedroom home in Kent sold and closed by June. Through Team RED’s resources, Judith received immediate support with packing, moving, and unpacking. Once she was moved into her new retirement community and Judith’s family had received the items important to them, an off-site auction was coordinated, donations were made, and the house was emptied by efficient estate-dispersal experts. Team RED then coordinated a seller’s pre-inspection and selected repairs to maximize the return on investment for Judith’s home sale. Team RED coordinated the repairs through their pre-selected vendor list and supervised the entire process.
According to Judith, “Team RED pretty much handled everything for me, but kept me apprised of it all. From listing

dates to staging, I knew everything that was going on and I didn’t have to second-guess a thing.”
Team RED is led by Realtor® and Managing Broker, Kathy Kleber. Their unique senior transition services offer many people moving into the next stage of their life a stress-free option for selling and moving. “I was amazed. I had never done this before, or at least not for more than 38 years, and I didn’t know what to expect. Even the moving company that Kathy hired made it so easy. I sat in a chair while they put everything away, made my bed and even assembled new furniture I had just bought,” said Judith. “They even put my cat in its crate before they left.”
“Judith had spent a lifetime taking care of others. It was our sincere privilege to come alongside and take care of her,” said Kleber.

From a young age, Nancy Munro has been intrigued by the power of design. She saw how it could transform an ordinary space into one with beauty and elegance. Munro owns Weatherly Inn, a business that builds and manages premiere senior living communities in the South Sound. She uses her design skills to create places where grandparents love to live and grandkids can’t wait to visit.
Munro’s professional adventures began as a dental hygienist before choosing to work with her parents and four siblings building senior living communities in the Northwest. One of her first big projects was Olympics West in Tumwater in 1976. Nancy opened her own design business called Lee’s Interiors (her middle name). She also owned and operated Nantucket Antiques in the historic 1918 Hotel Olympian building in downtown Olympia. She had befriended Ruthann Panowicz Goularte, longtime owner of Drees, who became a mentor and dear friend. “She took me to the design center, taught me what to look for, what to buy, and to aim for higher quality.”
Nancy Munro and Larry Bunn, a dentist, raised five children during which time they started their own senior living business. The first Weatherly Inn, located in Tacoma, was built in 1989. She used antiques from her inventory to decorate. She and Larry, along with their now grown children, built the second in Kent in 1999 and a third in Renton in 2023.
Nancy breathes passion into her everyday life, whether it is a new business project, transforming a home, or spending time with family and friends. She collaborates with David Goularte, Ruthann’s husband, who is also an interior designer in his own right. “He never ceases to amaze with his knowledge and professionalism – it has helped me see the layers and richness of design.”
Nancy hesitates to call what she does “work,” as it brings her joy. Stemming from her spiritual grounding, she believes every

finished product should be filled with warmth and delight. “I believe I get to do what God created me to do. I am so grateful for such a blessing.”

Spring 2026 is less about fleeting trends and more about intentional dressing that feels authentic to you. Think effortless elegance, thoughtful color, and pieces you’ll return to season after season. This year’s fashion invites women to embrace style that reflects confidence, comfort, and individuality, without compromise.

Cloud-like neutrals and creamy off-whites create a calm, polished foundation for any outfit, perfect for mixing and matching. Capri blue and cool blues bring a refined pop of color without feeling too youthful or bold. For accents, subtle pastels and grounded earth tones (think soft olive, gentle blush) add warmth and versatility.
These hues elevate wardrobe basics and make layering a key styling tool this season, creating a feeling of cohesion.

SILHOUETTES THAT FLATTER, STRUCTURE MEETS COMFORT
Spring silhouettes support confidence and movement. Cinched waists and tailored pieces enhance shape without rigid discomfort. Blazers, dresses, and lightweight trench coats are updated with subtle structure.
Classic midi lengths (skirts and dresses that hit mid-calf) offer elegance and versatility for day-to-night styling.

Layering with intention, think a crisp shirt under a fine knit or a tailored jacket over a flowy dress, adding depth without bulk.
This season’s trend story isn’t just about runway drama, it’s about wearable sophistication. Classic denim with a clean finish brings a relaxed yet pulled-together feel to everyday ensembles.
Light knitwear and cardigans replace heavy winter layers with breathable alternatives that work for spring’s fluctuating temperatures. Statement scarves and beaded jewelry add personality without overwhelming your look, perfect for elevating simple outfits.
Accessories this spring are expressive yet elegant. Structured top-handle bags lend classic polish to your outfits or go for more of a boho look with a slouchy purse.
Beaded jewelry and printed scarves are trending accessories that work equally well with casual and dressier looks. Shoes with refined details, like T-straps or satin finishes, bridge comfort and chic styling.

Opt for accessories that reflect personal flair; they’re the easiest way to refresh your wardrobe season after season.
Spring’s material story brings dimension without excess. Soft embroideries and lace details add femininity without feeling forced. Classic prints like stripes and polka dots make a stylish return in a grown-up register.
These elements bring visual interest to outfits without competing with your natural elegance.
} Build around trusted classics - tailored trousers, structured blazers, and versatile dresses.
} Layer with purpose - a lightweight knit over a blouse adds dimension and comfort.
} Invest in well-made accessories - they elevate even simple outfits.
} Pick colors that flatter your complexion- soft neutrals with pops of gentle color feel youthful without adding overly trendy energy.

HUBBUB 505 North Tower Ave 360.736.1517 hubbubshop.com

HUBBUB is a remarkable shopping experience – it’s meant to savor. The creative touch of owner Rebecca Staebler begins with the display windows and flows through the entire space of a historic 1910 storefront in the ‘hub’ of Centralia. The official anniversary party is Friday, November 14 from 4-8pm, but it’s a bit of a celebration whenever you stop in.
The gift boutique features American handcraft, which are goods from studio artists who use materials like wood, glass, ceramics, textiles and even recycled or upcycled materials. They reinforce the idea that what you use every day ought to be beautiful as well as functional. The store is filled with contemporary, innovative, colorful, and often delightful items from home décor to women’s clothing, carefully selected greeting cards and stylish shoes.
“I fell in love with American handcraft,” Staebler says, and she saw the need for a fun place to shop and buy art. That led to opening her own store (after 20 years in publishing) that highlights pieces from artists whom she had gotten to know from attending craft shows. “Every piece has a story,” and she knows each one. These relationships allow her to give buyers a more intimate look into the making and meaning of their work.
The interior design is all Staebler’s style with curving counters and unique light fixtures. The repaired floor-to-ceiling brick walls add to the welcoming atmosphere. She owns the lot adjacent to the building, which has been transformed to a park with seating. Three large art pieces (made from former propane tanks), once homed at the Monarch Sculpture Park, have since been refurbished and reinstalled.
People may be surprised to find that buying local is not necessarily more expensive than shopping online. It keeps more of your dollars within your community. HUBBUB provides personal service and a business that is invested in the well-being of the community. Of course, you get to touch and try on things, too!

Get in on the festivities with HUBBUB’s one-of-a-kind purses, wearable art and creative (and mailable) gifts. You’ll likely want an extra for yourself. Friday’s party continues on Saturday, the single sale of the year, with treats, photo ops and more.

Surrounded by the rolling hills of Southern Oregon, the town of Ashland combines small-town warmth with world-class culture. Whether you arrive by a short flight into nearby Medford or enjoy a scenic drive through the Rogue Valley, every season offers something special, but from March through October, the town truly comes alive with the energy of the Oregon Shakespeare Festival.
Begin your morning at MIX Bakeshop in the heart of Ashland Plaza, a friendly
local spot with the charm of a Paris sidewalk café. Grab handcrafted coffees and fresh morning pastries to enjoy on a leisurely stroll through Lithia Park, Ashland’s crown jewel.
Established in 1908, Lithia Park’s 93 acres are a haven of natural beauty and hold the distinction of being the oldest park in the region. Wander through its lush gardens, creekside trails, past duck ponds, and a Japanese Garden. Pause for a moment on a bench; you may just be treated to the sounds of musicians performing live within the park during the Oregon Shakespeare Festival season.
Head back to Main Street for lunch at Greenleaf. The quaint eatery is known for fresh flavors and views from its outdoor patio situated out back along Ashland Creek. The sweet little alleyway is lined with cozy restaurants and umbrellaed seating and hosts the Lithia Artisans Market on weekends midMarch through October.
As the afternoon stretches ahead, take time to explore Ashland’s many boutiques and art galleries. Each one offers unique treasures such as handcrafted jewelry, fine art, or locally made goods.
If you have time, be sure to stop by the historic Ashland Springs Hotel. The grand landmark celebrated its 100th year and stands as a proud symbol of the town’s elegant past.
By late afternoon, you’ll be ready to check into Lithia Springs Resort and Wine Garden for the duration of your stay and a refreshing pause before dinner. With its tranquil gardens and grounds, mineral spring waters, and an inviting mix of bungalows, suites, and studio accommodations—along with a day spa, saltwater pool, and tasting room—it’s the perfect place to unwind.
After a rest, it’s time for dinner at downtown Ashland’s Bar Juillet for laidback sophistication at its finest. The chic wine and cocktail bar offers a menu of seasonal small plates and comfort classics. Don’t miss the standout fried chicken—crisp, golden perfection drizzled with Ted’s honey, and paired with Aleppo chili and Calabrian ranch.
Of course, no visit to Ashland is complete without an evening at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival (OSF). OSF has transformed this small town into one of the nation’s most vibrant theatre-going destinations since 1935. Tickets for the next season are released each year in late November, but you’ll soon realize that Ashland’s magic lingers long after the curtain falls.”

“Yes, we still sell electronics,” laughs Marie Di Scala, CEO of Desco AV, a third-generation family-owned business on Olympia’s Westside. “However, the extent of what we offer your home is so much more now.” Along with custom entertainment systems for home or business, Desco brings new life and designs to smart home automation with attention to the customer’s specific needs and lifestyle. With a single touch or voice command, you have control of both inside and outside lighting, security systems, and temperature in addition to traditional audio/video products.
The customer always come first, a hallmark of Desco since its inception in 1969. Desco’s team takes the time necessary to understand you and what makes sense for your life. They help you create spaces that truly suit you. There may be suggestions for things you may not have considered or even knew were possible, like discreet night lighting or lights set to your circadian rhythms.
“We want you to have a comfortable environment for whatever you may do in your spaces,” says Di Scala.
While people tend to spend money on fixtures, furniture, and art, they then neglect integrating all their carefully chosen elements with proper lighting.
“It’s a missed opportunity,” advises Marie, “when you don’t consider how your pieces are lit.”

Desco creates unique home theater experiences. Along with quality AV products, customers can get high-end entertainment seating, AV cabinets, custom shades and complementary lighting. All systems will be delivered and installed, and then they will walk through the system with customers to ensure they understand how to use all components.
Di Scala, granddaughter of Dick Scott (who started the company with his friend Gene DeRousie), took the helm in 2024, after her father Jeffrey passed unexpectedly. She brings her work experiences with non-profits and other agencies to integrate with the valuescentered family business. “It’s an honor
to be here with this team behind me,” she says. “I have always been mission-driven.”
Whether you are having your first baby or are aging in place, Desco has solutions to save you time and energy while elevating everyday living.
You are welcome to visit the showroom to learn more, see before and after photos, and experience for yourself the quality and professionalism that awaits you.
