Putting this latest edition of the Report together it really struck me what an incredible year 2025 has been for Shorthorn cattle and their breeders. We had one of the biggest Junior Nationals in the country, hosted an incredible World Tour, the Pacer Performance Program was launched and the fall show run was highly competitive and well attended. We’ve had to say good bye to some friends and respected members, and we are excited to welcome new members to this amazing breed. I look forward to seeing what 2026 will bring for everyone. Canadian Junior Shorthorn Association As I step into the role of CJSA President for 2026, I am excited to work alongside a passionate and dedicated board to continue building opportunities for our junior members across Canada. I have been involved with the CJSA Board since 2023, first serving as the Saskatchewan Director and most recently as Secretary. Having grown upraising and showing Shorthorns, the junior program has played an important role in my own development, and I am eager to step up in a more active leadership role to give back to an organization that has meant so much to me. The coming year is shaping up to be an exciting one, with many opportunities for juniors to grow their skills and get involved. Nominations to join the CJSA Board are open until January 31, 2026, and we encourage junior members to consider taking on a leadership role. The first highlight of the year will be the Stars Leadership Conference, hosted once genetics in support of the junior program. again in partnership with the Canadian Junior Limousin Following a record-breaking attendance at last year’s Association. CJSA Scholarship Winners Sigga Vigfusson Sigga Vigfusson of Rock Ridge Ranch has been an engaged member of the Canadian Junior Shorthorn Association for the past three years and is currently serving on the CJSA Board. She has competed at the CJSA National Show in both 2023 and 2024, participated in industry events such as the Shorthorn Manitoba Field Day, and gained valuable experience working alongside leading breeders and exhibitors. Sigga is currently studying Animal Science Technology (Beef Major) at Lakeland College, with career goals of becoming a livestock nutritionist focused on feed efficiency, animal health, and sustainable beef production. Her dedication to the Shorthorn breed, youth involvement, and continued education highlights her strong commitment to the future of the association and the Canadian beef industry.

Mackenzie Nunn Mackenzie Nunn is a dedicated and enthusiastic member of the Canadian Junior Shorthorn Association who has built strong leadership, teamwork, and advocacy skills through active involvement in provincial and national shows. Her experiences in the show ring and on the Ontario Junior Board have strengthened her commitment to promoting the Shorthorn breed and contributing to the junior program. Academically, Mackenzie plans to pursue a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology beginning in Fall 2026, followed by a master’s degree in Occupational Therapy. She is especially passionate about animal-assisted occupational therapy and hopes to one day open a private practice that integrates therapeutic programs within a farm setting. Her long-term goal is to combine her love of agriculture and healthcare by supporting individuals’ physical, emotional, and social development through hands-on interaction with farm animals. Mackenzie’s drive, compassion, and dedication to both her education and the Shorthorn community clearly demonstrate her commitment to making a positive difference in the lives of others and within the industry.

CSA Whole Herd Registry (WHR), A Quick Guide How fitting? The January Issue of the Canadian Shorthorn Report and the beginning of the 2026 Whole Herd Registry (WHR) enrollment. Here are some common questions we get from the membership regarding their WHR assessments. Who must be enrolled? Cows calving in 2026 and herd bulls with progeny being born in 2026. Your yearling heifers and bulls are not required when assessing your herd. Why is January important for WHR? It is the month when breeders are eligible to pay the lowest enrollment fee per animal ($30/head). Otherwise, members are expected to pay higher fees throughout the rest of the year. What if there is no calf to report or something happened to the cow I enrolled? There is always the ability to report either a calf birth record (even a commercial calf), a cow disposal, or a reason why there is not a calf (the cow aborted, she was an embryo donor, etc).

Andrew Cattle Co then donated one of the resulting heifer calves to the Barry Andrew Family Scholarship, and she sold for $48 250 to a Syndicate who came together to support this cause. After the heifer was sold before the commercial sale, a name was drawn from 4-H members who exhibited at the Moose Jaw Regional Fair last year, and Lily Atcheson was the lucky winner. She is a member of the Longlakeon 4-H Club, which was Barry Andrew’s first club. The scholarship was set up by Barry Andrew and gives $1500 to a student. who has participated in Agribition and is

Ontario Junior Shorthorn Association All-Stars Showmanship Series The All-Star Showmanship Series was recently created to encourage and reward Shorthorn Juniors who participate in showmanship classes at various Ontario fairs. The top two Juniors will receive belt buckles and $100. The Juniors placing third, fourth and fifth will also receive $100. Currently over 30 Juniors are participating and have submitted their results. The results have been tabulated, and the top 5 Juniors in alphabetic order are: Abigail Ciavoliello,Andy Kearse, Sydney Martin, Cody Staples, Delby Wilkinson Full results and prizes will be shared at the upcoming OSA

All nine entries to the Shorthorn Breeder’s Herd This year the OSA handed out 88 breed awards to 4H class at the Royal received the James W. Rummerfield members from Ontario who had a Shorthorn calf as their award of $500. Plus the three Get of Sire entries received 2025 project. Since we began measuring individual feed intake we have received a lot of feedback – some positive and some negative. One concern that arises is that negative RFI cattle (more feed efficient than other animals in their contemporary group) are not easy keeping. Some people believe that feed efficiency tests will heavily favor tall, lean, late-maturing, high maintenance animals that lack the propensity for fat deposition and fleshing ability.

If a person holds that opinion, why not select moderate sized, easy fleshing animals to test? Then, use the more feed efficient animals from that group in your breeding program. This is the approach that we are taking. We cull for all the reasons that we have for decades and then test the animals that make the cut. We ranked our yearling bulls tested in 2025 according to RFI and then split them into 3 groups: top (negative RFI), middle, and bottom (positive RFI). Then we looked at the average ratio of these 3 groups for intramuscular fat (IMF) and fat thickness (FAT). The top 1/3 had an IMF ratio average of 102, FAT ratio average of 101. The middle 1/3 had an IMF ratio average of 103, FAT ratio average of 101. The bottom 1/3 had an IMF ratio average of 96, FAT ratio average of 98. These results agree with industry research that suggests selecting for RFI has no effect on carcass quality. We also tested open purebred heifers in spring 2025. Daughters of Saskvalley Jangle 220J ate 5% less feed and had a slightly higher average daily gain than the rest of the pen. Because we have the ability to measure individual feed intake, we can select more feed efficient breeding stock and increase profitability.
