From Our Pasture to Yours, As another summer comes to a close, we find ourselves looking back on the past few months of early mornings, long days, and plenty of time spent watching this year’s calf crop develop. There is something pretty special about seeing a group of young stock grow from the ground up, and we are grateful for every opportunity to do just that. To our customers, thank you for putting your trust in Saskvalley Stock Farm and for allowing our bulls to become part of your programs. We truly appreciate the conversations, the friendships, and the updates we hear throughout the year about how your cattle are working. As the days get shorter and the evenings get a little cooler, we are looking forward to fall shows. Barry will be attending a few to promote measuring feed efficiency. Fall is here, and with that comes a busy time for shows, sales, and breed promotion. A lot of time and effort goes into getting the cattle ready for the show ring. No matter the outcome, I hope you all come home with a positive experience. Now is also a great time to take a day off to visit your friends and neighbours, and go see your favourite breeder at a show or sale, and to pick up some new genetics for your herd. We all know someone who would love to find a new Shorthorn under the Christmas tree, even if we write our own name on the gift tag! Wishing everyone a safe travels during the show and sale season. CSA President’s Message I am reminded that I need to submit a President’s Message, and I look and see that the fall equinox is only four days away. On September 23rd, we will have equal amounts of daylight and darkness. This means we will have less and less daylight to work with for the next three months, and then it will be officially winter. Already, I see some trees preparing for winter, with leaves changing colour and beginning to fall. I hope that the summer was good for you. Talking with members across the country, I know that there have been trying times over the last few months. For some it was too wet and for some too dry. The perfect year from start MARTIN MASON to finish only comes along about one in ten. I hope you all have enough feed on President & Ontario Director hand to make it through the winter. In 2016 a farm one mile north of the home place was purchased and the old barn was renovated and the fields were fenced. While the land is rolling it is good for beef cows. It is not crop land, so only forage is grown for the cowherd. Coldstream doesn’t even own a grainery. The pastures on the farm have a backdrop of the Beaver Valley that runs north to Georgian Bay. Now there was a place to build a herd. The hobby was getting out of control and Don was loving it. AI was used from the beginning and the first herd bull used was a son of Muridale Buster 14K.
