Shoreview Commons Improvements will Continue this Spring Improvements at Shoreview Commons, located next to the Shoreview Community Center, will continue moving forward this spring. This phase of improvements includes the construction of a new decorative pond and formal garden area, construction of a plaza-style skate park, trail and sidewalk extensions, and landscaping. Reconstruction and resurfacing of the upper community center parking lot took place last fall. The new Shoreview Commons Skatepark Plaza is expected to be open this spring. Additional improvements available this spring include a new neighborhood playground and park shelter at the park on Mound Avenue. Contractors will complete work on the new pond area, final grading and surfacing of the new sidewalks and trails around the new pond area. There will be a significant amount of landscaping throughout the project area, including the installation of more than 130 trees, and planting of various shrubs and perennials in the garden area. Planning and design work has also started on the second phase of improvements. These include a destination playground and a new park building. Design plans for this playground and park building will be available to review this spring or early summer. “We are very excited to complete and open these new improvements to the Shoreview Commons,” stated Mayor Sandy Martin. “This will further enhance the Shoreview Commons area and the Shoreview Community Center as the central gathering spot for our residents and truly create a “central park” for our great city.”

Residents and businesses are recognized each year with the green community awards from the Shoreview Environmental Quality Committee. Awards are given to residents, businesses and organizations that have a positive impact on their environment by improving water quality, installing renewable energy, and using eco-friendly practices. Winners receive a small lawn stake and are recognized at a city council meeting. Applications are available at shoreviewmn.gov or at city hall. Applications are due July 3. Questions? 651-490-4665.

Watering tips Save water this summer while keeping your lawn healthy! Healthy lawns only need around two inches of water each week. That’s about 20 minutes of watering twice a week. Be sure to water before 11 am or after 5 pm.

Irrigation controller rebate Residents with a current irrigation system controller can apply for a rebate if they upgrade to a smart irrigation controller. The must be WaterSensecertified. The rebate is for 75% of the cost, up to $150. The Metropolitan Council’s Water Efficiency Grant Program, with help from the Clean Water, Land and Legacy Amendment, provided partial funding for this program. Learn more at shoreviewmn.gov.
WaterSmart All residents can sign up for WaterSmart, a free digital dashboard for water customers in Shoreview. You will receive a personalized home water report three times a year and can view your water usage online. Since 2016 Water Smart customers have saved over 10 million gallons of water!
Keep Shoreview’s water clean You can help keep our water clean! Keep grass clippings and leaves out of the street and make sure dog waste gets picked up. Keeping these things out of our storm sewers keeps our water cleaner and healthier.
2020 Tour de Trails Discover the wonderful trails in Shoreview with your friends and family at the Tour de Trails bike ride. Short and long loop options are available. All participants will receive a commemorative t-shirt created by Chippewa Middle School students to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the event. Tree Care 101 Spring and summer are a great time to plant, trim* and care for most of the trees on your property. Healthy trees benefit not just our lawns and homes by providing shade, but also our air and water while providing important habitat area for animals. The most common trees in our community have special needs, so make sure you know how best to care for your trees. Whatever trees you have, make sure to hire only licensed and bonded tree contractors. A list of current contractors is available at www.shoreviewmn.gov/tree-trimmers.

Oak trees
Ash trees can be trimmed during spring and summer. All ash trees should be protected from Emerald Ash Borer, an invasive species that kills ash trees. Shoreview offers a treatment program at a reduced cost that injects insecticide into the trunk of ash trees and targets the Emerald Ash Borer. Request an inspection and quote for the EAB program at 651.490.4665.
Characterized by their large, colorful leaves, maple trees are beloved in our neighborhoods and community spaces. Maple trees should be trimmed in mid-summer to prevent them from losing too much sap. Tapping maple trees to gather sap for maple syrup is a popular activity in February/March. Learn more about tapping maple trees at www.tapmytrees.com.
Oak trees are unlike most other trees in Shoreview and should only be trimmed or removed during the months of November, December, January and February. Oak wilt is a fungal disease that kills thousands of oak trees every year and can be spread very quickly to any tree that has an open wound. If your oak tree is wounded, seal the wound quickly with one coat of shellac or a waterbased paint. If you suspect oak wilt, contact the natural resources office at 651.490.4665. Community Organizations Willkommen! Did you know that Shoreview has a sister city? The Shoreview Einhausen Sister City Association is a non-profit organization that unites people from Shoreview, MN, U.S.A., and Einhausen, Hesse, Germany. We strive to promote international good will and friendship by promoting opportunities for residents of the greater Shoreview area to experience German culture through a variety of activities with an emphasis on exchanges and interaction with people from Einhausen Germany. As an example we facilitate group and student exchange opportunities between the two communities. This fall a student arrives from Germany to spend part of the school year here in Shoreview. This class is the ideal tool to compliment the outdoor cyclist. Doing hills, sprints, flat roads while using time, speed and or distance drills, this workout will help increase your overall performance in speed, power, and endurance.
Power Pump is a weight training class using free weights and dumbbells. This class uses different tempos for reps, higher repetitions and supersets to help build lean muscle tissue, strength and muscular endurance.
Warm up with basic step moves and then learn fun choreographed patterns, combinations, and movements on an adjustable step.

This class incorporates low impact cardio followed by basic strength training exercises.
Power strength is a weightlifting class using barbells and dumbbells. This workout is designed to build muscle mass and strength. Focusing on technique, the exercises are done in multiple sets with lower repetitions so that more weight can be used or added.

Total body workout This workout incorporates exercises designed to enhance your agility, speed, power, strength and quickness. Equipment used may include weights, TRX (suspension training), kettlebells, bands, benches, bosus, cycles and mat works. The class will also elevate your heart rate as you are challenged with drills in either circuits and/or a stand-alone station.
Zumba® Grooving to the beats of salsa, reggaeton, cumbia, hip hop and merengue, music feels more like a dance party than a workout, which is exactly what makes Zumba so popular! The Latin-inspired dance workout is one of the most popular group exercise classes around. You don’t need to be a great dancer to feel welcome in a Zumba class.

Group Fitness Mind/Body Classes Fitness pilates Pilates classes focus on balancing all muscle groups strength and flexibility, with an emphasis on challenging the core muscles with each movement.
Stretch and balance A beneficial blend of balance exercises and static (holding) and dynamic (moving) stretches.
Tai chi Simple yet profound, Tai Chi exercises foster clarity and focus for the mind, vitality and power for the body, as well as balance and peace for the spirit.
Yin/Restorative Yoga This grounding practice will provide fewer postures which you will hold for longer periods of time, allowing you to focus on breathing into the connective tissue (fascia) that surrounds the joints in the body.
Hatha yoga Build flexibility, strength and balance through a comprehensive exploration of the discipline of yoga. Each class will cover a variety of asana (poses) that will help you improve muscle tone and mobility in various parts of the body, while reducing stress.
Heated yoga Hot Yoga is an intense practice that will move you through powerful and aggressive postures and/or series. This practice is meant to detoxify the body, build strength and burn calories through movement, breath, and heat. Designed for intermediate to advanced levels. Class temp range is 80-90 degrees.
Power yoga Students will focus on linking conscious breath with a vigorous and mindful flow. Participants will build strength, flexibility and concentration while cleansing the body and calming the mind.

Yoga/Pilates fusion The perfect combination of Pilates and Yoga! Receive the benefits of core training, muscle contraction and lengthening, isometric holds, balance postures and mind/body awareness.
Yoga sculpt Yoga sculpt is the fusion of vinyasa yoga and strength endurance training. This unique and intense workout incorporates hand weights and is designed to tone and shape your body. Build stamina through a series of squats, lunges, crunches, plank holds, cardio work, balancing postures, and stretching.

Stassen Again: The Political Rise, Demise & Redemption of Harold E. Stassen (1907-2001) Harold Stassen is best known for his ten unsuccessful runs at the U.S. presidency, but his life and politics were far more complex. Known as Minnesota’s “boy governor” during the Depression, Stassen co-authored the United Nations charter, a member of the Eisenhower administration. and a perpetual presidential candidate. Stassen consistently argued for moderation, tolerance and common sense. during a time it was in short supply of each.
TED is a nonprofit devoted to spreading ideas, usually in the form of short, powerful talks (18 minutes or less). No registration required.

A note about swim lessons •
Swim lessons will not be canceled if Mounds View School District cancels after school activities due to weather.

Students should use the bathroom and shower before entering the pool area. Staff aren’t allowed to take students to the bathroom.

We do not provide make-up lessons.

Group classes with fewer than 2 registered participants will be canceled.
On the first day of lessons, meet on the patio located by the pool entrance to go over introductions

If your child needs a quieter environment to learn look at our Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday availability.

Children ages 4 and under may use any locker room. Children ages 5 and older must use the same sex locker room or family locker room.
•
The pool water temperature is kept between 83 and 84 degrees.

Adventure Quest: Summer Playground Program
Adventure Quest: leaders in training Looking to develop leadership skills and resume building opportunities? We are looking for youth who want to develop their leadership skills and have a the chance to work with our summer playground programs. Leaders in Training will be placed at park locations and meet at the Shoreview Community Center on Wednesday’s at noon. These LIT meetings will review and develop the skills of decision-making, goal-setting, problem-solving, relationship-building, communicating, listening, self-awareness and empathy. Important dates: Mandatory training on Thursday, June 4 from 6-7 pm and Wednesday, June 10 from noon – 2 pm
Adventure Quest is filled with sports, crafts, games, songs, and other themed events. Our highly trained and energetic summer crew will unveil a new theme each week. The instructor introduces tennis slowly using low compression tennis balls and integrating games progressing at individual’s pace. Balls are provided. Children should bring their own junior size racquet and a water bottle. Beginners Ages 7 to 11 For players with little or no tennis experience. Instruction focuses on grip, rules, and fundamental strokes. Advanced Beginners Ages 9 to 11 Perfect for the player who has taken lessons, but needs stroke and technique improvement. Instruction focuses on stroke consistency and introduces new strokes. Intermediate Ages 11 to 14 For youth with dependable strokes who have completed advanced beginner class. Instruction will focus on court coverage, game strategy, stroke use and much more.
