In the News
An Olympian in the making Kyra Condie started climbing when she was an 11-year-old student at Chippewa Middle School. A friend held their birthday party at Vertical Endeavors in Minneapolis and the experience launched Condie onto a path that would lead to the 2021 Olympic Games in Tokyo. A Shoreview native, Condie quickly became competitive in climbing. She particularly liked the individual aspect of the sport – being able to challenge herself and push limits while being surrounded by a supportive community of climbers. But a diagnosis of severe scoliosis a few years later nearly took Condie out of climbing completely. Condie underwent major back surgery where doctors fused 10 vertebrae together. After four months of recovery she started training again and returned to competitive climbing a year after surgery. That’s when her intensity and focus on training drove her to become an elite climber. Surgery, and the forced time off, reaffirmed how much Condie loved to climb and she realized what it meant to her. After recovery, Condie won her first major competition. Condie qualified for the Olympics in 2019 at an event in Toulouse, France. She’s one of four Americans who will compete in the 2021 Olympic Games in Tokyo. Currently she’s training in Salt Lake City, Utah and spends five days a week climbing for as long as four hours each day, sometimes doubling up her training sessions ahead of competitions. Condie says she’s looking forward to Tokyo and being surrounded by other elite athletes. While she’s enjoying her path to the Olympics, she does miss her puppy, her family, and her home in Shoreview. Her long term plan is to become a veterinarian but says she’s “going to make the pro climbing thing work while I can.” Good luck in Tokyo, Kyra! We’ll be cheering you on.

Destination playground coming to Shoreview A new, exciting outdoor playground is coming to Shoreview! Construction on the second phase of the Shoreview Commons park project will start this spring and includes a destination playground and shelter. This one-of-a-kind playground will have six different areas for kids of all ages. Younger kids can follow the river from the hillslide slides to the marsh area, zip-line, and tree houses. There is also a climbing forest and variety of swings for them to enjoy. Older kids can test their skills on the ninja style challenge course. The course has many features such as the high step, balance beam, spider walk, and rope climb. Families can relax and have a picnic in the shelter or at the many seating areas located throughout the playground. Some other amenities include: •

Located along Victoria Street, this playground offers a place for families to enjoy the outdoors while their kids have fun. It promises to be one of the most exciting playgrounds in the entire metro area!

Development code update Shoreview’s development code has been revised to implement the policies and recommendations from the recent comprehensive plan, Destination Shoreview 2040. The development code outlines how land can be used and developed. Updates to the code include creating:

Overnight parking permits can be requested for up to seven days for a special event, guests, or construction. Overnight parking is not otherwise permitted between 2 – 5 am on Shoreview streets. Grading & excavating Work to level your yard, re-landscape areas of your yard or any digging and disruption of the soil. Night to Unite August 3 Night to Unite will take place Tuesday, August 3 from 5 - 9 pm. Night to Unite is a fun and affordable way to promote policecommunity partnerships and help residents feel safer and more connected with their neighbors. Green community awards Residents and businesses are recognized each year with the green community awards from the Shoreview Environmental Quality Commission. Awards are given to those who take steps to improve water quality, install renewable energy, or use eco-friendly practices. Compost 101 Composting is one of the most important things we can do to help our environment. Organic matter, like food scraps and yard waste, release gases when they decompose. In a landfill this creates dangerous methane, a green house gas 23 times more potent than carbon dioxide. When composted organic matter creates a rich fertilizer and no methane.

When we chose to compost, we save waste from landfills, reduce greenhouse gas, and improve soil quality. Adding compost to soil increases beneficial bacteria and fungi that support plant growth. If everyone in the United States composted all of their food waste it would have the same impact as removing 7.8 million cars from the road. Using compost to fertilize vegetable gardens, rain gardens, native trees, and shrubs increases our impact even more. Environmental sustainability starts with small changes at the local level. Eco-friendly behaviors in our city can have a big impact globally. Shoreview residents can pick up a free organics recycling starter kit at city hall. Furnishing the Lepak/Larson house The Shoreview Historical Society is moving forward in furnishing the Lepak/Larson house as a 1930s farmhouse. The three rooms on the main level will be open to the public for events and tours at a future date. Here’s a glimpse of the interior at the present time.
Room #1 The kitchen features a stove, refrigerator, sink and table and chairs. There is also a walk-in pantry.
Room #2 This will be the reception area. The trunk would have been similar to one immigrants commonly used during their travels. Families kept them and used them for storage in their new homes. The Singer sewing machine was a necessary item as well.
Room #3 The parlor is furnished with a sofa, lamp, chair, washstand and clock.

SESCA Happy Summer from the Shoreview-Einhausen Sister City Association! Even though our regular events are still on hold, we are exploring ideas on holding small events virtually this summer – and there are still ways to get your German ‘fix’ around town! Gasthaus Bavarian Hunter Restaurant in Stillwater will open their beer garden on June 5. Waldmann Brewery & Wurstery in Saint Paul has a beautiful biergarten with authentic German food options. The Germanic-American Institute in Saint Paul will hold their “Deutsche Tage” (German Days) Festival on Saturday, June 12 and Sunday June 13. The event is free with food, drink, and merchandise for sale. SESCA board members continue to stay in close contact with association counterparts in Einhausen, Germany. They are in talks about a potential visit in 2022. Stay tuned for more details, and how you can join in the fun while the visitors are here. Group Fitness Step cardio
Warm up with basic step moves and then learn fun choreographed patterns, combinations, and movements on an adjustable step.
Dance jam
Dance your heart out while getting an amazing workout
60/40
The first 60% of the class is cardio – either high/low impact cardio, step, kickboxing, or dance followed by the remaining 40% of class time to execute effective resistance exercises.
Fundamental combo
Low impact cardio followed by basic strength training.
H.I.I.T. (High Intensity Interval Training)
Barre principle
In each energizing and targeted workout, you’ll use the barre and exercise equipment such as miniballs and small hand weights to sculpt, slim, and stretch your entire body.
Intervals of extreme cardio and/ or resistance followed by a short recovery.
Cardio kickboxing

Cycle training
Ideal tool to compliment the outdoor cyclist. Doing hills, sprints, flat roads while using time, speed, and distance drills, this workout will help increase your overall performance in speed, power, and endurance.
The resistance workout
Incorporates strength training exercises using various pieces of equipment and/or your own body weight. Class focuses on all major muscle groups with some added attention to form. Progressions can include compound exercises and functional balance exercises.
In this choreographed class you will learn one awesome dance routine. You will be amazed at the great workout while you get your “groove” on!
Total body workout
Incorporates exercises designed to enhance your agility, speed, power, strength, and quickness. Equipment used may include weights, TRX (suspension training), kettlebells, bands, benches, and BOSU® balls. The class will also elevate your heart rate as you are challenged with drills in either circuits and/ or a stand-alone station.

Mind/Body Classes Stretch and balance
Fitness Pilates
A beneficial blend of balance exercises and static (holding) and dynamic (moving) stretches.
Focus on balancing all muscle groups, strength, and flexibility, with an emphasis on challenging the core muscles with each movement.
Yin/restorative yoga This grounding practice will have fewer postures which you hold for longer periods of time, allowing you to focus on breathing into the connective tissue (fascia) that surrounds the joints in the body.
Yoga basics This class is based on physical postures, deep breathing, mindfulness, and listening to the body. A slower paced class that focuses on fundamental postures. Great class for beginners or for one seeking a modified (gentle) yoga class option.
Power yoga Students will focus on linking conscious breath with a vigorous and mindful flow. Participants will build strength, flexibility, and concentration while cleansing the body and calming the mind.
Yoga/Pilates fusion The perfect combination of Pilates and yoga! Receive the benefits of core training, muscle contraction and lengthening, isometric holds, balance postures, and mind/ body awareness.
Hot yoga
Yoga sculpt
Intense practice that will move you through powerful and aggressive postures and/or series. This practice is meant to detoxify the body, build strength, and burn calories through movement, breath, and heat. Designed for intermediate to advanced levels.
Fusion of vinyasa yoga and strength endurance training. This unique and intense workout incorporates hand weights and is designed to tone and shape your body. Build stamina through a series of squats, lunges, crunches, plank holds, cardio work, balancing postures, and stretching.

Shoreview Parks & Recreation swim lessons We use a fun and imaginative approach to help students create a lifelong love of swimming. Students will learn new skills and build on previously learned skills through group or private instruction. Our instructors participate in ongoing training sessions and are selected based on their desire to teach, enthusiasm, and swimming ability.
