City manager retiring After 28 years as city manager, Terry Schwerm, will be retiring at the end of the year. Terry has been instrumental in developing Shoreview into the outstanding, vibrant community it is today. Some key accomplishments from his career in Shoreview include:

City News
City bans menthol, mint, and wintergreen flavored tobacco In May, the city council took action to make Shoreview a healthier community. It added menthol, mint, and wintergreen to the list of flavors tobacco retailers cannot sell. Shoreview has been a leader in tobacco control since the 1990’s. It was one of the first cities in the nation to prohibit tobacco vending machines. In 2016, it was one of three Minnesota cities to limit the sale of fruit and candy flavors to tobacco shops. The city took this action after learning how tobacco use contributes to health disparities across Minnesota. Tobacco companies use these flavors to entice new users. They also have a history of targeting youth, LGBTQ, African Americans, and others with menthol marketing. These communities use menthol at a higher rate than the general population.
Citizen of the Year and Caring Youth Awards The city is currently accepting nominations for the 2021 Citizen of the Year and Caring Youth Awards.
Citizen of the Year This annual award was created by the city council to present a special honor to a citizen who exemplifies the spirit of giving back to the community. The council’s goals for this award are: •
Recognize the volunteer efforts of deserving citizens
•
Inspire others to continue the tradition of Shoreview citizens volunteering.
Caring Youth This award was created by the human rights commission to honor our outstanding youth volunteers. Nominees help make Shoreview a community where all people are welcomed, valued, and respected. If you know someone who deserves either of these awards, submit an application at shoreviewmn.gov. Nominations for the Caring Youth Award are due September 17 and nominations for the Citizen of the Year award are due October 8.
The ban will begin September 1, 2021.
Shoreview Park System Plan Update
Shoreview Parks and Recreation is working on an update to the park system plan. This update includes reviewing all the amenities throughout the park system, including playgrounds and athletic fields, and creating a plan for future use. It's important to review parks and recreation trends, along with our changing demographics, to make sure our park system is serving our residents in the best possible way.
The development process began earlier this year with an inventory of current park features. Key community groups and city staff provided feedback on the inventory, and sketches of the parks with updated amenities were created. These sketches will be made available to the community for feedback at neighborhood meetings in all the parks and online.
The city has partnered with LHB Corp, a firm specializing in landscape architecture and planning. LHB has experience working with communities in developing park system plans.

Once the public feedback has been compiled the park plans will be updated and reviewed by the parks and recreation commission and city council.

Boat & Trailer Parking Wondering where to park or store your boat, camper, ATV, snowmobile, or trailer? We have the answers below! Can I store my boat/ATV/snowmobile/camper in the garage? Yes! Can I store my boat/ATV/snowmobile/camper in a shed? Yes! Can I store my boat/ATV/snowmobile/camper in my yard? Yes – with the following conditions: •
No more than two vehicles are stored outside.
•
Only one of the stored vehicles can be an RV including: campers, trailers, tent trailers, travel trailers or motorhomes.
Examples: a camper and a boat; a boat and an ATV; an ATV and a motorhome. •
Vehicles are at least 5 feet away from the side or front property line, and 10 feet away from the back property line.
Can I store them on my grass? Yes, in the back and side yards. In the front yard any stored vehicle needs to be stored on an approved surface – like concrete. Can I store them on the street? Shoreview Down Payment Assistance Program for New Home Buyers New home buyers in Shoreview can qualify for up to $25,000 in down payment assistance. Low interest loans are available for homes under $350,000. For buyers with incomes below 120% of the Area Median Income, you can get up to $25,000, with low interest, paid back in monthly payments. For buyers whose incomes are at or below 80% of the Area Median Income, up to $10,000 is available in a due-on-sale loan with 0% interest and no payments, paid back when the home is sold, transferred, or no longer owner-occupied. Additional funds, up to a combined total of $25,000 may be used. •
Applies to single-family homes, townhomes, duplexes, and condominiums within Shoreview city limits.
•
Property must be owner-occupied as a primary residence.
•
Purchase price may not exceed $350,000.
•
Buyers must attend homebuyer education.
•
Buyer may not have owned a home within 3 years.
•
$25 application fee
•
There must be a minimum contribution of 3% of the purchase price paid by or on behalf of the borrower.

Did You Know? What Not to Flush. Did you know – flushable wipes aren’t really flushable? Wipes and similar products don’t break down the way toilet paper does and can clog pipes, put stress on community watershed collection and treatment equipment and cost cities thousands on equipment repair and replacement. They can even damage wastewater treatment plant pumps. You can help prevent expensive blockages at your home, and further down the line, by never placing the following items into the toilet, even if they have a “flushable” label.

Fulfilling its mission to “maintain, enhance and enrich the quality of life in Shoreview by connecting the generosity of people with evolving community needs” Shoreview Community Foundation announces its 2021 grants. The recipients reflect a variety of partnerships and responses to community needs: Ramsey County Library & Shoreview Bikeways & Trails Commission will partner to provide four bike repair stations throughout Shoreview as well as pertinent videos and safety clinics. Shoreview Historical Society will update, print and distribute a historical booklet with self-guided tour. Midwest Special Services will continue their adaptive beekeeping program, offer classes and partner with local groups.
Friendship garden supports community grants The Shoreview Community Foundation thanks all who supported the friendship garden project by buying commemorative brick pavers and bench sponsorships. Proceeds from these donations will be channeled back into the community through grants focusing on arts and cultural organizations, recreational places, educational initiative and leadership development, historical preservation, and human services. A signature project in partnership with the City of Shoreview, the friendship garden represents our community spirit as welcoming and friendly to all. The centerpiece is a bronze sculpture depicting happy children at play. Set among flowers and plants, the joyful art is encircled by a path of commemorative pavers and benches for peaceful reflection.

Mounds View Schools will offer EmpowerU, a personalized, social-emotional learning program to high school students. Northeast Youth and Family Services will purchase laptop computers to support their mental health programs. The City of Shoreview partnered with the SCF on the friendship garden project to enhance the Shoreview Commons. The SCF supported this project with a grant and the fundraiser which gave community members the opportunity to purchase engraved pavers and benches. These and future grants are possible because of generous contributions from the community. As the endowment continues to grow, additional funds become available to award grants. Resident Resources Gallery 96 Gallery 96 is alive and well despite the pandemic. Typical in-person exhibitions at the Shoreview Community Center and the Shoreview branch of the Ramsey County Library had to be reimagined over the last year. The organization had to pivot and began offering monthly virtual art exhibitions online. The exhibitions were judged, and cash prizes were awarded. Hopefully, Gallery 96 will be able to resume live exhibitions this fall at the library when the community room reopens to the public. They are also resuming their exhibits in the community center glass cases. Gallery 96 also hosted a month-long show at Taste of Scandinavia Bakery in North Oaks in July and had a booth at the Slice of Shoreview with a community art project. Informal monthly art discussion sessions held at the Shoreview Community Center give members an opportunity to share their work and receive friendly feedback. These sessions will hopefully resume soon. Gallery 96 Art Center was conceived in 1997 when a small group of Shoreview residents, interested in the visual arts, began discussing the need for an area art center where emerging and maturing artists could meet other artists, enter juried competition, and find a place to show their work. The organizing group believed that education in the visual arts was needed to supplement offerings in secondary schools and to heighten awareness of the rich heritage of museums and galleries in the Twin Cities. Annual membership fees are modest and whether you are an artist looking for places to show your art or a supporter of these artists, Gallery 96 invites your support. NYFS seeks volunteers for Senior Chore Program Northeast Youth & Family Services is looking for volunteers age 16 and older who are interested in helping local seniors live at home, with dignity, for as long as possible. Volunteers are needed for seasonal outdoor chore help including lawn mowing, gardening, weeding and garage cleaning. All work will be performed in accordance with Covid-safety guidelines. Warm up with basic step moves and then learn fun choreographed patterns, combinations, and movements on an adjustable step.

The first 60% of the class is cardio – either high/low impact cardio, step, kickboxing, or dance followed by the remaining 40% of class time to execute effective resistance exercises.

The resistance workout
Incorporates strength training exercises using various pieces of equipment and/or your own body weight. Class focuses on all major muscle groups with some added attention to form. Progressions can include compound exercises and functional balance exercises.

Total body workout

Mind/Body Classes Stretch and balance
Fitness Pilates
A beneficial blend of balance exercises and static (holding) and dynamic (moving) stretches.
Focus on balancing all muscle groups, strength, and flexibility, with an emphasis on challenging the core muscles with each movement.
Yin/restorative yoga This grounding practice will have fewer postures which you hold for longer periods of time, allowing you to focus on breathing into the connective tissue (fascia) that surrounds the joints in the body.
Yoga basics This class is based on physical postures, deep breathing, mindfulness, and listening to the body. A slower paced class that focuses on fundamental postures. Great class for beginners or for one seeking a modified (gentle) yoga class option.
Power yoga Students will focus on linking conscious breath with a vigorous and mindful flow. Participants will build strength, flexibility, and concentration while cleansing the body and calming the mind.

Fusion of vinyasa yoga and strength endurance training. This unique and intense workout incorporates hand weights and is designed to tone and shape your body. Build stamina through a series of squats, lunges, crunches, plank holds, cardio work, balancing postures, and stretching.

Swim Lessons
Shoreview Parks & Recreation swim lessons We use a fun and imaginative approach to help students create a lifelong love of swimming. Students will learn new skills and build on previously learned skills through group or private instruction. Our instructors participate in ongoing training sessions and are selected based on their desire to teach, enthusiasm, and swimming ability. Parent - instructor communication is vital to the success of each swimmer. Our mission is to provide an inclusive program for all.
A note about swim lessons
Private lessons (PR) Ages 3 - Adult Private and semi-private lessons offer one-on-one training so you’re able to learn at your own pace. Lessons are 30 minutes and available at set times.
•
Swim lessons are not canceled if Mounds View School District cancels after school activities due to weather.
•
We do not provide make-up lessons.
•
Group classes with fewer than three registered participants will be canceled.
•
Students cannot swim before or after lessons.
Semi-private lessons
•
Students should use the bathroom and shower before entering the pool area. Staff aren’t allowed to take students to the bathroom.
You must have two people at the same ability for a semi-private lesson
•
If your child needs a quieter environment to learn look at our Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday lessons.
•
Children ages 4 and under may use any locker room. Children ages 5 and older must use the same sex locker room or family locker room.
•
The pool water temperature is kept between 83 and 84 degrees.

Mini kickers soccer
Discover the sport of tumbling in a positive, educational atmosphere. Participants will learn basic skills on floor, balance beam, bars, and vault. Due to space limitations there is no observation area for parents; parents are invited to observe the final class.
