State of the City
Community center Bamboo Bay, the new indoor water park in the community center has been open for over a year, along with new fitness studios, activity rooms, an expanded indoor playground, and a number of updates throughout the community center. While construction inside the community center is complete, work on the commons area continues into 2020.
Shoreview Commons Since 1957 Shoreview has become one of the most respected and sought after cities in the region. It's a city where people want and love to live. As we enter a new decade we’re confident in the future of our great community. During the past two years the city has taken on projects that continue to enhance the quality of life for our residents. The city has completed a number of large projects over the past year that make a significant impact on our community – and will launch even more projects this year to help bring our city into the next decade. Here are highlights from Mayor Martin’s State of the City address. You can read or watch the full state of the city at shoreviewmn.gov.

Construction began in 2019 on the first phase of the Shoreview Commons development. The outdoor park area around the community center will soon have a new skate park, a decorative pond that will serve as a skating venue in winter months, expanded trails and a formal garden. Additional work in 2021 will create a destination playground and new park building.
Communications In September, the city council approved a new logo for the city. The new design is both modern and timeless and reflects the lakes and forests found in our community. An updated city website is currently in development. A separate website for our business community is also in development and both are expected to launch in the next few months.
Economic development Several economic development projects were either completed or started in 2019. Loden S.V., an apartment complex in southwest Shoreview will enter the second phase of development, including a 200-unit apartment building just north of the existing building.
A 120,000 square foot single-use office building at Shoreview Corporate Center will be converted into a modern, multitenant business facility. Work is expected to be completed by early summer. Rice Creek Corporate Park will soon house The Edison, a two-phase project that includes 300 apartments and 68 rental town homes. Townhomes will be available this spring; apartments are expected to open this summer. Oliver's, a locally owned restaurant, located on the ground floor of the McMillan apartments will open in early 2020.
Parks and trails Heritage Park, the first new park in Shoreview for 20 years was created at the location of the historic Lepak/Larson home at Lexington Avenue and County Rd I in 2019. The city will update our park system plan in 2020, which includes reviewing all city parks, demographics and recreation trends, and developing a conceptual master plan for each park. Playground equipment at Rice Creek Fields and Shamrock Park will be replaced and a new trail link along County Road E from Vivian Avenue to Lexington Avenue will be completed. Ramsey County is planning to restore the beach at VadnaisSnail Lakes Regional Park and a master plan process for the park will begin to address the impacts of continued flooding. The city will work with the county and watershed district closely on this issue. Residents are encouraged to be actively involved in this process.
Road projects The city will reconstruct North Owasso Boulevard between Rice Street and Victoria Street this spring, in coordination with the county’s renovation of Lake Owasso County Park. Construction of the Rice Street bridge over I-694 began last spring and is scheduled to be completed this August. Once completed, we expect development proposals for the former Ramsey County Public Works site south of 694, which consists of more than 10 acres and is owned by the city.
In 2019, the city completed a two-year project that repaired and resurfaced five miles of roads in Shoreview. During 2020 and 2021, the city will reconstruct streets in the Edgetown Acres neighborhood.
Environmental sustainability Shoreview received the 2019 Sustainability Award from the League of Minnesota Cities, for the city’s work to implement WaterSmart, a water monitoring portal that encourages residents to conserve water. During the testing stage, over 8 million gallons of water were saved by residents using WaterSmart. In 2019, the city added a solar array to the maintenance center roof to provide about onehalf of the electrical demand. Charging stations for electrical vehicles will also be installed at the community center in 2020.
Finances The city recently adopted a biennial budget of approximately $65 million, along with a five-year operating plan. In Shoreview, city taxes on a home valued at $303,800 in 2019 were $969, about 25% below the average city property tax of $1,296 of metro cities. As a city, we are committed to having an open and accessible government. We do this by televising and live-streaming all of our city council and planning commission meetings, publishing the ShoreViews newsletter four times a year, publishing the twiceper-month Access Shoreview e-newsletter, and engaging with residents on social media. Mayor Sandy Martin holds weekly office hours from 3-5 pm on Tuesdays. We look forward to serving you in 2020.

Presidential Primary Election March 3, 2020 7 am – 8 pm
2019 Shoreview Citizen of the Year: Tim Pratt Tim Pratt was honored by Mayor Sandy Martin and the Shoreview City Council with the 2019 Shoreview Citizen of the Year Award at the volunteer appreciation dinner in November. Since moving to Shoreview 20 years ago, Tim has been a leading advocate for protecting and improving our environment. He has served on the environmental quality committee (EQC) the last 16 years and many of those years, he has been the chair. Through his work on the EQC, Tim has helped create successful programs such as the environmental speaker series and green community awards. In addition to serving on the EQC, Tim has volunteered in a number of different areas. Building on his passion for running, Tim served on the Turtle Lake Elementary Let’s Play 5K organizing committee for six years and has raised over $11,000 for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society through its Team in Training program. Additionally, Tim has volunteered for 30 years at his church, serving as a church lector or AV assistant.

Will Steger speaks at community foundation fundraiser On November 19 over 200 supporters attended the annual Shoreview Community Foundation fundraiser. Will Steger, polar explorer, founder of the Will Steger Foundation and co-founder of the Center for Global Environmental Education, delivered the keynote address. Steger, who has family origins in Shoreview, shared his remarkable adventures at the top and bottom of the earth, his grave concern over the reality of climate change and told spell-bounding stories of resilience and survival. Steger developed the Will Steger Foundation in 2006 to encourage and empower people in the effort to stop climate change. In 2014 he launched the Steger Wilderness Center. After his speech, while Steger signed copies of his latest book, Crossing Antarctica, a retired Duluth school librarian, Linda Vukson, had a surprise for Steger. In 1995 Steger lead the International Arctic Project, a dog sled expedition, across the Arctic from Russia to Ward Hunt Island in Canada. The expedition was also a technology skills project for the students at Lester Park Elementary, where Vukson was librarian. Steger’s team sent daily emails that were posted on construction paper in the library’s hallway, along with photographs, magazine articles and a map charting the route Steger’s team was taking across the Arctic. A local new station came to the school each day to film a student reading the daily report on the trek. Vukson had saved the detailed accounts, photos and map of the journey and presented them to Steger after his speech. What began as an elementary school project will now be housed in the archives at St. Thomas University, Stegers alma matter. The Shoreview Community Foundation raised a net total of $54,389 at the fundraiser to further the foundation’s mission to “maintain, enhance and enrich the quality of life in Shoreview by connecting the generosity of people with the evolving needs of the community.”
2019 Caring Youth Award Winner: Jimmy Xiao Jimmy Xiao received the 2019 Shoreview Caring Youth Award at the annual volunteer appreciation dinner in November. This annual award, created by the Shoreview Human Rights Commission, honors the city’s outstanding youth. It reminds us that it is not simply the contributions of adults that form the foundation of our community; but rather the contributions of everyone, which makes us one community. As a senior at Mounds View High School, Jimmy can be found at the library nearly every Saturday. Wanting to do something for our wonderful community, he started volunteering at the library as a freshman in 2016. He can typically be found helping with the request list but will jump in wherever he is needed. In the nomination letter, Lynnette Pound, a librarian at the Ramsey County Library - Shoreview, described Jimmy as “reliable, efficient, friendly, kind, diligent, honest, appreciative, responsible, hardworking, and happy!” It is apparent that he has made positive lasting impressions through his volunteer work at the library and is very deserving of this award.

Resident Resources Spring has sprung Spring means melting snow and ice, plenty of water, hydrant flushing, and street sweeping.
Street sweeping Public works sweeps city streets each spring. Street sweeping removes salt, sand, and other winter debris before it reaches the storm sewers. Sweeping is dependent on weather but usually begins in late March.
Hydrant flushing Crews will flush fire hydrants in late April. Flushing cleans sediment from the water mains and ensures all hydrants and valves are working properly. Tap water can sometimes change color after hydrant flushing. This is normal and is safe for drinking, but could discolor laundry. Water leaks Water leaks in your home can be detected by the public works department. If your water meter shows one gallon of water used every hour for 24 hours you will receive a postcard letting you know that you might have a leak. Leaks are common in toilets, water softeners, faucets, sprinkler systems and humidifiers. Questions? 651-490-4650.

Lawns to Legumes – BEE the change Melissa King, Board of Water and Soil Resources (BWSR) March 18 7-8 pm Shoreview City Hall council chambers Pollinators like bees, butterflies, moths, beetles and native flies, play an essential role in our food production and are essential to healthy ecological systems. There are more than 450 native bee species in Minnesota but the decline of pollinators is worrying to conservation professionals, legislators and the public. Lawn to Legumes is a new grant program that provides assistance to people in Minnesota to plant native plants in their lawns, an effort to protect the federally endangered state bee – the Rusty Patched Bumble Bee.

Green community awards Residents and businesses are recognized each year with the green community awards from the Shoreview Environmental Quality Committee. Awards are given to residents and businesses that have a positive impact on their environment by improving water quality, installing renewable energy, and using eco-friendly practices. Winners receive a small lawn stake and are recognized at a city council meeting. Applications are available at shoreviewmn.gov or at city hall. Applications are due July 10. Questions? 651-490-4665.

NYFS spring cleanup for seniors starts April 20 Northeast Youth & Family Services will host its annual spring cleanup for seniors event from April 20 to May 11. Volunteers are needed to rake and bag leaves, pick up trash, sweep sidewalks and put out lawn furniture for seniors who are not able to complete these tasks themselves. Group Fitness Fundamental combo This class incorporates low impact cardio followed by basic strength training exercises.
H.I.I.T. (High Intensity 60/40 The first 60% of the class is cardio which will be either high/low impact cardio, step or kickboxing or dance followed by the remaining 40% of class time to execute effective resistance exercises.
Barre Principle In each energizing and targeted workout, you’ll use the barre and exercise equipment such as mini-balls and small hand weights to sculpt, slim and stretch your entire body.
Cardio kickboxing A dynamic and energetic class that combines kicks, punches and blocks. This athletic based class is easy to follow but provides a challenging workout.
Cycle rave We pedal to the music and that’s it! Experience a fun, crazy party on your bike! You will be amazed at the workout you will get.
Cosmic drums Hit the lights, hit the music, and hit the drums! This class is a great cardio workout. Equipment provided.
Cycle training This class is the ideal tool to help compliment the outdoor cyclist. Doing hills, sprints, flat roads while using time, speed and or distance drills, this workout will help increase your overall performance in speed, power and endurance.
Interval Training) This class showcases interval training, intervals of extreme cardio and/or resistance exercises for a designated amount of time followed by a short recovery period.
Kettlebell training This class fuses exercises using kettlebells and conditioning drills to provide a total body workout that will leave you feeling strong!
Power pump Power Pump is strictly a weight training class using free weights and dumbbells. This class uses different tempos for reps, higher repetitions and supersets to help build lean muscle tissue, strength and muscular endurance.
Power strength Power strength is strictly a weightlifting class using barbells and dumbbells. This workout is designed to build muscle mass and strength. Focusing on technique, the exercises are done in multiple sets with lower repetitions so that more weight can be used or added.
The resistance workout This class is strictly strength training exercises using various pieces of equipment and/or your own body weight. Class focuses on all major muscle groups with some added attention to detail (form/ feel). Progressions can include compound exercises and functional (balance) exercises.
Step cardio Warm up with basic step moves and then learn fun choreographed patterns, combinations and movements on an adjustable step.
The groove Okay dancers, here you go! In this choreographed class you will learn one awesome dance routine. You will be amazed at the great workout while you get your “groove” on!
Total body workout This workout incorporates exercises designed to enhance your agility, speed, power, strength and quickness. Equipment used may include weights, TRX (suspension training), kettlebells, bands, benches, bosus, cycles and mat works. The class will also elevate your heart rate as you are challenged with drills in either circuits and/or a stand-alone station.
Zumba® Grooving to the beats like salsa, reggaeton, cumbia, hip hop and meringue, music feels more like a dance party than a workout, which is exactly what makes Zumba so popular! The Latin inspired and Worldinspired dance workout is one of the most popular group exercise classes around. You don’t need to be a great dancer to feel welcome in a Zumba class. You will become one though!

Yin/Restorative Yoga This grounding practice will provide fewer postures which you will hold for longer periods of time, allowing you to focus on breathing into the connective tissue (fascia) that surrounds the joints in the body.
Yoga basics This class is based on physical postures (asanas), deep breathing, mindfulness and listening to the body. A slower paced class that focuses on fundamental postures. Great class for beginners or for one seeking a modified (gentle) yoga class option.
Fitness pilates Pilates classes focus on balancing all muscle groups strength and flexibility, with an emphasis on challenging the core muscles with each movement.
Hatha yoga Build flexibility, strength and balance through a comprehensive exploration of the discipline of yoga. Each class will cover a variety of asana (poses) that will help you improve muscle tone and mobility in various parts of the body, while reducing stress.
Yoga/Pilates fusion The perfect combination of Pilates and Yoga! Receive the benefits of core training, muscle contraction and lengthening, isometric holds, balance postures and mind/body awareness.
Heated yoga Hot Yoga is an intense practice that will move you through powerful and aggressive postures and/ or series. This practice is meant to detoxify the body, build strength and burn calories through movement, breath, and heat. Designed for intermediate to advanced levels. Class temp range is 80-90 degrees.
Power yoga Students will focus on linking conscious breath with a vigorous and mindful flow. Participants will build strength, flexibility and concentration while cleansing the body and calming the mind.
Stretch and balance A beneficial blend of balance exercises and static (holding) and dynamic (moving) stretches.
Tai chi Simple yet profound, Tai Chi exercises foster clarity and focus for the mind, vitality and power for the body, as well as balance and peace for the spirit.

Water walking Come and use your Group X Card Monday - Friday, 10 am-4 pm and walk the swim lanes. No instructor; give your receipt to the lifeguard. Time subject to change for pool groups that book the waterpark. An updated monthly schedule is available in the locker rooms.
Kid Care Care is provided for children 6 months to 8 years of age. Maximum stay is 2 hours. Parents must remain in the building. Reservations are accepted for Group X card holders. A note about swim lessons •
Swim lessons will not be canceled if Mounds View School District cancels after school activities due to weather.

Students should use the bathroom and shower before entering the pool area. Staff aren’t allowed to take students to the bathroom.

We do not provide make-up lessons.

On the first day of lessons, meet on the patio located by the pool entrance to go over introductions

If your child needs a quieter environment to learn look at our Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday availability.

Children ages 4 and under may use any locker room. Children ages 5 and older must use the same sex locker room or family locker room.

The pool water temperature is kept between 83 and 84 degrees.

Youth Programs Grandparent* and Me How about a BINGO!
Rhythm Kids In each weekly music class, your child will drum, sing, move and play with rhythms inspired by musical traditions around the world from West African Gahu, to Japanese Taiko, to Brazilian Samba, just to name a few. Students learn to compose choreograph and conduct as the play – and play with – a variety of musical instruments: West African djembe drums, percussion instruments, and the most important instruments of all, they voices and their bodies. This program will incorporate popular children’s stories as well as ballet stories to create a dance class that is more than ballet steps. Tae kwon do Tae Kwon Do emphasizes both physical and mental discipline unlike any other martial arts program. Classes teach kicking, punching, striking, and blocking techniques through traditional Tae Kwon Do. While learning self defense, you will develop both physically and mentally. You will improve your stamina, strength, speed, agility, coordination, flexibility, balance, reflexes, concentration and confidence. Youth Sports
Sports Unlimited Sports Unlimited Camps provide fundamental skill development for boys and girls with an emphasis on fun! The camps help players learn the core skills and techniques used in each sport and then allow them to practice these skills in a number of games and scrimmages. All campers receive quality instruction, water bottle and sportsmanship award. All equipment is provided unless noted below. Registration deadline: one week before camp starts CAMP

Seasonal maintenance workers $12-14/hour Parks, streets and utilities are hiring full-time summer help to perform general labor.
Adventure Quest playground instructors $10.50-12.50/hour June-August Lead kids ages 3-11 in summer playground events, sports, crafts, songs, art and special events.
Service desk $11.25-12.25/hour Help guests on phone and in-person, operate cash register, log membership info, assist at cafe as needed.
Farmers Market coordinator $14-16/hour June-October Coordinate event and serve as point person for vendors, entertainment and guests. Fitness instructors $16-23/hour (1.5 hrs paid/1 hr class) Currently seeking cardio and strength, water ex, and kettlebell instructors. Guest service/memberships $12.25-13.75/hour Answer questions, give tours, help with room set up, address guest issues, provide backup at desk and cafe. Gym supervisor $11.25-12.25/hour Supervise adult drop-in pickleball and other activities. Gymnastics and tumbling instructors $11-12/hour Teach beginning to intermediate level classes. Past teaching and gymnastics experience preferred. Lifeguards $12.50-14/hour No experience is required. Training is provided through Ellis Certification.
Manager on duty (community center) $16.25-18/hour Coordinate daily activities, supervise staff, assist guests, follow safety/security procedures. Personal trainers $19-23/hour Nationally certified trainers provide personalized workouts for general fitness and sport-specific conditioning. Pool coordinator $15-17/hour Coordinate activities/operations, supervise & train staff, schedule shifts, carry out policies, maintain systems.
