Mayor's Column
As we head into the heart of summer this July, Shoreview is buzzing with energy. It’s a wonderful time of year to reflect on how our local landscape—both in our shared public spaces and right in our own backyards—shapes our vibrant community.
A few years ago, I installed a rain garden and a native planting area with help from the Ramsey Washington Metro Watershed District. While the first year required patience, the last two years have brought life and color. From hummingbirds and butterflies to the unexpected sandhill crane, my yard has turned into a living ecosystem.
Stepping away from our screen-heavy lives to observe this natural world is a refreshing antidote. It's a gentle reminder to stay present in the physical world around us. I encourage everyone to practice this as you enjoy our beautiful lakes and park systems this summer.
Community life is also in full swing! Our summer concert series continues at the Haffeman Pavilion every Wednesday at 7 pm through August 5. Grab a lawn chair, bring the family, and enjoy some wonderful local talent with your neighbors.
Community gathering and our physical environment are central to Shoreview's identity. As a highly desirable community, demand for land is strong. While residents sometimes ask why more land isn't left undeveloped, vacant properties can attract vandalism and illegal dumping. That's why we strive to balance thoughtful development with ample parks and open spaces, ensuring residents continue to enjoy the natural areas that define Shoreview.

Krew Apartments:

Fifty-nine affordable housing units for lower-income residents
Seven Lakes Redevelopment:
Redevelopment of the former Deluxe Corporation campus at Victoria St. and I-694 continues to strengthen Shoreview’s employment base. The project includes:

Fall Tree Sale
Purchase a low-cost tree through a special tree sale this fall. Trees provide many benefits to the community such as absorbing stormwater, filtering air and water, providing shade, lowering energy costs, and others. Shoreview encourages residents to replant trees to replenish the community forest especially after high numbers of ash tree removals from emerald ash borer (EAB).

What is a right-of-way?
Right-of-way is land reserved for public use. It includes streets, sidewalks, trails, utility lines, and drainage areas.
The right-of-way can extend 10 to 15 feet into a homeowner’s front yard behind the curb. Homeowners are responsible for mowing and maintaining this area. Utility companies and cities use this area to install water and sewer, electricity, internet service, and other utilities.
What is a public drainage easement?
A public drainage easement is an area of land set aside to help stormwater drain. They lower the risk of flooding by allowing rainwater and snowmelt to flow away from homes and neighborhoods.
Drainage easements are often located along property lines and may contain storm sewer pipes, drainage ditches, swales, or ponds. They help collect and direct water to protect nearby properties and public infrastructure.
What is a public utility easement?
Why call before you dig?
Before starting any digging project, contact Gopher State One Call by dialing 811 or submitting a request online. This is a Minnesota state law. Utility staff and contractors will come out to mark locations of underground utilities.
Calling before you dig is important because underground utility lines are buried a short distance below the surface.
Why are there colored flags in my yard?
Flags and spray paint are temporary markings used to show the location of underground utilities before digging begins.
Working together to protect our community
Right-of-way areas, drainage easements, and utility easements all play an important role in keeping our roads safe, utilities working, and stormwater systems operational.
By understanding these areas and always calling 811 before digging, we can prevent accidents and support essential public services.

The CAT Brings World-Class Art to the Suburbs
If you didn’t know what it was, it would be easy to mistake Shoreview’s Cafesjian Art Trust Museum (the CAT) for a highend office building on Churchill Street. Behind the geometric patterns of the exterior walls, its home not to cubicles and computer screens, but to exhibitions of contemporary art. It’s a hidden gem that the museum’s leaders hope to make more visible in the years to come.
Established in 2022 by the family of Gerard Cafesjian, the CAT was conceived as a gift to the city, and a resource meant to give suburban residents a world-class museum in their own backyard. “We’re a small museum, and we really lean into that as an asset,” said Laura Steefel-Moore, the CAT’s Director of Learning and Community Engagement. “We provide intimate, bite-size museum experiences for people in a way that feels accessible and not overwhelming.”
The CAT has always been free to visit. The museum offers guided tours, but it is also open for drop-in visits on Friday evenings and all day on Saturdays. The museum is working to reach visitors across the age spectrum. Steefel-Moore started a program for babies and offers programs for families of all ages, school tours for students, and a teen council that works with the museum during the school year. They also offer a range of programs for adults, including artist talks, curator-led tours, concerts, and a special program for people with dementia and their care partners.
Now Steefel-Moore wants to grow awareness. “Even if they’re familiar with the museum, a lot of people might not realize the full scope of what we have to offer,” said Steefel-Moore. “Not only do we have programs for people at every stage of life, but we have a stellar, dynamic slate of original exhibitions and a fascinating art collection, meaning we are a resource for the community in so many ways. Having a worldclass art museum this close to home can be a lifechanging experience.

This group exercise class is designed for individuals with Parkinson’s Disease (PD) seeking a fun and challenging workout. The class incorporates workout circuits and cardio activities, offering modifications to suit different needs. Participants must be able to walk unassisted and complete a 45-minute class with short rest breaks. Instructed by Physical Therapists, Amanda and Jamie.

Make an appointment for an in–person screening to measure your fall risk and identify areas to strengthen. Past participants are fans and recommend the evaluation to their friends. You can re–test to see your progress.

AARP Smart Driver
AARP trained volunteer instructors teach you techniques for safer driving. Most insurance companies offer discounts for completing the class, which must be taken every three years to maintain the discount. The eight–hour course is no longer required.

Climate Talk with DR. Mark Seeley
As a faculty member in the U of M’s Department of Soil, Water, and Climate from 1978 to 2018, Dr. Seeley participated in thousands of public speaking engagements, meetings, media interviews and personto-person interactions where he shared his considerable knowledge of the critical relationship between climate and agricultural production.
50 Years Later – The 1976 Drought
The Drought of 1976 was the 2nd worst drought in Minnesota state history. It was especially devastating to the agricultural economy of the state. Mark will speak about the historical context for this storm, its consequences, and how it helped shape Minnesota agriculture to be more resilient.

On Nov 10, 1975, the SS Edmund Fitzgerald sailed directly into the heart of one of the most powerful storms ever recorded on Lake Superior. A reconstruction of the historical storm that sunk the Edmund Fitzgerald shows that the ship had faced the storm’s maximum power. This historic storm is still used as a case study in meteorology books. Learn about the chronology of this storm and its historical context.

Academic Assessment & Parent Empowerment Workshop
This program taught by Huntington Learning Center is designed to help families better understand their child’s academic performance while equipping parents with practical tools to support their child for long term academic success.
Students will complete two standardized online assessments (total 60–90 minutes) that measure their performance in reading, and math, and compare their results to grade-level expectations and peer benchmarks. While students are taking the assessment in a supervised testing room, parents will participate in a workshop focused on strategies for supporting academic success. Topics include building effective study habits, creating productive home routines, improving school communication, managing screen time, motivation techniques, and helping children develop confidence and responsibility in learning.
By the end of the program, families will gain both a clearer picture of the students’ academic standing and actionable strategies to help them succeed in school and beyond.

Tae Kwon Do

Fall Soccer Leagues
Our leagues are held in collaboration with Arden Hills, Mounds View, New Brighton, and Fridley. Teams will have one practice and one game each week. Practices will be one hour starting at either 6 or 7:05 pm; games will be held on Saturday mornings. If there are any days your child can’t practice during the week, please include that with their registration. Coaches will contact participants with team and schedule information 1 - 2 weeks before league starts. All players must wear shin guards but cleats are not required. Players will receive a t-shirt. Leagues based off of 2026 - 2027 school year.

Ice Skating Instruction: Group Lessons
Pre-snowplow | Ages 4 – 8
With a mix of fun games and drills, this class will help participants gain the strength and confidence to stand on their own while introducing preliminary skating moves and techniques.
Snowplow Sam | Ages 4 – 10
Participants will learn to skate in a safe and fun environment. This class introduces preliminary moves that will help develop the familiarity, coordination and strength needed to maneuver on skates.
Levels 1 – 2 | Ages 6+
Our leveled classes encourage participants to trade in hesitation for excitement as their confidence grows with each stride. Participants will focus on skills that build their agility, balance, coordination and speed.
Helpful tips for skaters: lace skates more snugly in the middle of the shoe than at the top or bottom for best support. Skates should fit correctly – don’t use skates that are too big. Keep the blades sharp. Wear one pair of light weight wool or synthetic socks. Cotton socks are not suitable for skating. If a child does not meet the basic requirements of the level registered for, the instructor will adjust the child’s level.
Helmets and skates: for safety, all participants are required to wear helmets. Bike helmets are acceptable. Helmets and skate rental are NOT available at the rink.
