* “We are moving out of our apartment, as we finally found a home to purchase. With all the new projects, we’re going to need our deposit back, so we want to leave the old place in tiptop shape. Here’s a trick we learned: Tiny nail holes in drywall are instantly patched by rubbing a bar of soap across the surface.” -- S.G. in Arkansas
* Now is the time to have your heating systems checked over if you have not done so already. Before you
start a fire in your fireplace, make sure you have your fireplace checked for cracks in the mortar joints. Very small cracks can start a fire in your home, as the flames can be sucked through the hole. While you are at it, have any creosote buildup cleaned out. Be safe AND warm this season!
* “Before I pluck my eyebrows, I rub on a bit of my granddaughter’s teething gel. She’s done teething and doesn’t need it anymore, but it works well for me. Be very careful to apply, let dry and wash your hands before touching your eye any further!” -- M.L. in California
* “Most cake recipes ask you to grease and dust the cake pan for easier removal
of the cake. To avoid unsightly flour marks on the outside of a cake, just dust the pan with a bit of your cake mix instead of using flour.” -- J.P. in Pennsylvania
* “Wear oven mitts to protect your hands when clipping roses or other thorny plants.” -- O.L. in Louisiana
* Got dogs? Here’s a great recipe to get the smell of skunk out: Mix 1 quart hydrogen peroxide (3%), 1/4 cup baking soda and 1 teaspoon liquid soap. Mix well and bathe pet in this solution, rubbing it into coat and keeping it away from your dog’s eyes. Cannot be mixed ahead, so keep the ingredients on hand if you have curious pups and skunks in the area.
* Line your pots and pans with plain paper coffee filters to reduce scratches. Replace as needed.
* To keep clothing on the hanger in your closet, try the thin, velvet-lined ones. If you can’t find them, add strips of rubber shelf liner to the tops of your hangers, secured with a little duct tape or safety pins.
* Here’s an easy and healthy way to add moisture and fiber to your burgers or meatballs: oatmeal. Add instead of package bread crumbs, which can include way too much unnecessary sugar or oils. The oats keep the meat nice and moist. Send your tips to Now Here’s a Tip, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803.

Es Pennsilfaanisch Deitsch Eck
By: e Late C. Richard Beam

(Originally published in the September 28, 1988 issue of The Shopping News)
WIDDER WADDE VUM SCHTIWWELGNECHT
In June, we shared with you a list of pairs of Dutch words which had originally been printed on May 18, 1988 by “Der Schtiwwelgnecht,” Clarence G. Reitnauer of “Siessholzwill,” in his Dutch column in TOWN AND COUNTRY, which is printed weekly in Pennsburg, Montgomery County. The response to this list of words was so encouraging that this week we are printing a list of words from “Der Schtiwwelgnecht,” which he read to those who attended Deitsch Wunnerfitz-Schtunn Picnic, held on July 3. These were published in TOWN AND COUNTRY on July 27.
“Der Schtiwwelgnecht” introduces these words as follows:
“Do sin etliche ganz umbekannde Wadde as ich gewwe hab am Deitsche Wunnerfitz-Schtunn Picknick uff der dritt July. Die erschde wees ich net was sie meehne. Sie sin yuscht fer Dummheede.
HIEWE-HAWWER, ULLRIE-GWACK, ISCHGEBIBBEL, SEI-BOLLER-RING, JOHN-HOPPER-LANS, HUNDSBUHNE, MANDELBIESSER, SICKE-ZOBBEMACHER. Weescht du was selli Wadde meehne?”

To the above words, “Schtiwwelgnecht” added the following: (Do you know these words? Would you give them the same or different meanings? CAN YOU ADD TO SCHTIWWELGNECHT’S LIST???).
Holsbutscher = a poor carpenter.
Baxegreemer = a peddler that carried some of his wares in a wooden box.
Feibaschdel = a fellow that acts very stuck-up.
Hochmutskischbel = a young lady that dresses extra stylish with much cheap jewelry.
Schlappschtiwwel = a very careless and dirty person.

Schnickelfritz = often used to describe a naughty youngster.
maschiere (a verb) = to walk in a hurried fashion. (German: marschieren).
Grutze-Schtarem = a storm of short duration; the sun soon again reappears.
verzwickt = somewhat simple.
en Ketzer = a rogue.
Glotzkopp = blockhead.
Siwwe-Urh-Schlaefer = a person who is always very late. Kariche-Meisel = a very poor person.
Dock-Kaader (Dach-Kaader?) = sometimes used to mean scrapple (instead of “Pannhaas”).
***
“Der Schtiwwelgnecht” concludes with this observation: “Sell is graad genunk vun so dumme Sache. Ich wees net wu so Wadde beikumme sin. Mer heert sie nimmi viel. Fer selli Ursach hawwich sie gewwe.”
***
Our “deitscher Schtrohhut” is again doffed in the direction of “Siessholzwill,” the abode of “Der Schtiwwelgnecht.” Keep up the good work, Clarence! We all appreciate you more than you will ever know!
***
And now you Dutch word detectives out there, get to work!!! Let’s see what you can do with this list! Add to the list by sending us other words which come to mind.
REMEMBER: Please tell us whether the nouns are DER (Hut), DIE (Hand) or ES (Gsicht). Also, please add to the nonsense word list which “Schtiwwelgnecht” gives above! - One of our favorite Dutch words is “Neschtgwaeckerli,” which we were called by our mother when we were quite small and slow to crawl out of bed. Does anyone know this word or similar ones?
Un nau, liewi Leser, losst die Wadde widder fliesse!!!

“Don’t take it lightly”
Author: Wenger
Scripture: Romans 2:4“Or do you think lightly of the riches of His kindness and restraint and patience, not knowing that the kindness of God leads you to repentance?”
This week we will review how God’s patience, restraint and kindness is revealed in salvation for the unbeliever.
God’s Kindness and Patience in Salvation:
As an unbeliever, our state was destitute of any hope. The Bible is clear on this; John 3:18, “Whoever believes in Him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son.”
The Bible states, “For all
W
have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23). It goes on further to say in Romans 6:23, “The wages of sin is death.” This is not only physical death, but ultimately the second death, which is to be cast into the lake of fire and be forever separated from God. The last part of Ephesians 2:12 declares the state of unbelievers, “Having no hope, without God, in the world.” The unbeliever’s fate is sealed if they do not see the goodness of God and embrace Christ’s forgiveness; “And these shall go away into everlasting punishment; but the righteous into life eternal” (Matthew 25:46).
Fortunately, there is an answer for man’s dilemma. God in His goodness, kindness and patience, has provided a way. “For God so loved the world that He gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him will not perish, but have everlasting life” (John 3:16). Remember what Romans 6:23 said? “The wages of sin is death.” Someone had to die and pay the penalty; God’s own Son,

our savior, died in our place on the cross. 1st Peter 3:18 says, “For Christ also suffered for sins once for all time, the just for the unjust, so that He might bring us to God, having been put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the spirit.”
One argument that always comes up in evangelism is, how can a good God send people to hell? He freely offers a plan of salvation. If you reject that plan of salvation, you send yourself to hell. We see this very same scenario in life everywhere. You may have the answer to someone’s problem and implore them to take the advice. Ultimately, it’s their choice. If they choose to go their own way, regardless of sound advice, they will suffer the consequences. It really comes down to free will. It is your choice…as they say, choose wisely!
Christ is the sacrificial lamb of the Old Testament. John the Baptist said it clearly: “The next day he saw Jesus coming to him, and said, ‘Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the
sin of the world!’” (John 1:29). His death was sufficient enough for the sins of the whole world. This doesn’t mean the population of the world will have their sins forgiven, but that His death was sufficient to that extent. In other words, every man, woman and child can be saved, but only those who believe on Him will be saved. As the jailer questioned, “What must I do to be saved?” Peter’s answer was, “Believe on the Lord and you will be saved” (Acts 3:31). Romans 10:13 states, “for, ‘Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.’”
Religion is always about doing. Christianity is about (DONE). Christ’s work on the cross is done! You can’t add to it. You can’t improve on it. You can only receive it when you place your faith in Him and His work on your behalf. Don’t think lightly of His kindness, patience and restraint! It can’t be said any plainer… “God so loved” YOU. Don’t run out the clock on God’s kindness. The biggest trouble with 11th hour conversions is that people often die at 10:45.

Cocalico High School
Emma Gensemer
Junior
Emma Gensemer, high school junior and daughter of Kelly Gensemer, has a lot to offer with her extraneous courses and extracurriculars.

Written by: Natalie Snader

This year, Emma is taking AP US Government, AP Biology, AP Language and Composition, AP Computer Science, AP Physics, German 4, Service Learning, and Linear Algebra as a dual enrollment class. Outside of the school day, her schedule is packed with extracurricular activities such as Global Scholars, Quiz Bowl, Mock Trial while also being a leader in the American Sign Language Club. Additionally, Gensemer is in National Honor Society while also being the treasurer of the German Club. One of her current projects is creating a fundraising program for UDS. Additionally, she hosts and plans the annual trivia chili night competition. Lastly, she tutors during focus for Algebra II, where she has a total of 75+ hours of tutoring.
While she is unsure of what she wants in her future as a career, Gensemer plans to acquire a PhD in mathematics with a minor in German with the hopes of doing research for a university in the math/physics field until eventually becoming a professor. Additionally, she is interested in visiting Germany for the architecture and her love for the language.
With her limited free time, Gensemer enjoys sewing, gardening and baking, where she makes decorative cakes and enjoys anything with a creative outlet. Another area of interest is video games, such as Roblox and Minecraft. She also enjoys collecting various antique objects, such as cassette tapes. A quote Gensemer favors is, “One day your life will flash before your eyes. Make sure it’s worth watching,” by Gerard Way. She feels inspired because she believes it is important to make the best of life and find things you enjoy; despite her packed schedule, she always makes sure to find time for hobbies and important people in her life.

I am going to introduce my friend Ali Davila, the daughter of Angelica and Alberto Davila. She came to Lititz Christian School in 2024 last year; since then, she has been bringing us a lot of joy and inspiring us every day.

She is truly blessed with grace from God; she attends the Family of Christian Church and is part of the worship team. She is really talented in playing the piano and uses it to praise the Lord. She is also in the worship team at Lititz Christian School and sings well.
After high school, her plan is to go to college, and since she is capable of interacting well with others, she plans to major in social work. Currently, her favorite subject is Psychology. She is really interested in digging deeper into how we were created and gaining a deeper understanding of ourselves.

I really admire how she always connects her thoughts to God and thinks in a more mature and thoughtful way than I do. Ali looks up to her mom. Over 100 participants, young and old, enjoyed parading around the park at which time they were judged in several categories. All costumed participants received a monetary gift in addition to free hot chocolate and donuts.
There was a surprise visit from members of the Rock band KISS, (shown in the photo), who made the night a success.
The members of the club thank Lion Anne Hale for her hard work by putting up the lights in the park and providing the sound system.
