Go Green With Personal Grooming

Cycling to work, bringing a reusable grocery tote to the store and choosing organic products are a few of the many ways people have accepted the mission to reduce the impact their daily living has on the planet. Great initiatives have been borne out of a desire to be more ecofriendly. Indeed, ecofriendly living can extend to all parts of one’s lifestyle, including personal grooming.

Small changes in daily

grooming habits can benefit the planet in myriad ways. And keeping clean and looking good while protecting the planet is simpler than one may think.

Save water

Water is an essential component of many grooming techniques, so making an effort to conserve water is a good place to begin making some ecofriendly changes. Invest in a low-flow showerhead and make a concerted effort to take shorter showers. Water and energy can be wasted when taking a bath, so limit those in favor of showers. If you choose to take a bath, don’t fill the tub and consider using old bath water for

For A MAKEOVER Fall

other purposes, such as watering houseplants or the garden. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency reports that Americans use approximately nine billion gallons of water every day to take care of their yards. Using old bathwater can reduce that number. When washing your face or brushing your teeth, turn off the faucet in between scrubbing and rinsing. Reduce reliance on singleuse plastics

Replace singleuse items with others that are more environmentally friendly. Instead of disposable razors, purchase an electric razor or one that has changeable head inserts on a reusable handle.

Ecofriendly toothbrushes made of bamboo can help reduce reliance on plastics. Buy locally made products

Opt for soaps and shampoos made from natural ingredients by local companies. The further the country of production, the more fuel and other resources necessary to get the product into your home. Scour local farmer’s markets and niche retailers in town, which often stock soaps and grooming materials made by community residents.

Read product labels

Avoid products that are made with chemicals in favor of those made from ingredients you understand. Such a decision can reduce harmful, potentially dangerous runoff that ultimately ends up in waterways. Select products that are sold in containers made from recycled materials or those that limit excessive packaging.

Ecofriendly living can be extended to personal grooming, ensuring people look good while protecting the planet at the same time.

Symptoms And Triggers Of Rosacea

People go to great lengths when tending to their appearance. Many morning and nighttime routines involve measures to protect the skin, which is why it can be so frustrating when a condition like rosacea suddenly appears.

The American Academy of Dermatology notes that rosacea is a common skin disease that typically begins with a tendency to blush or flush more easily than other people. Over the years, many notable public figures have had rosacea, including former American president Bill Clinton and the late Diana, Princess of Wales.

Rosacea can cause a number of symptoms, and recognizing those symptoms and what might be causing them can help people overcome the condition.

Symptoms of Rosacea

The AAD notes that there are so many signs and

symptoms of rosacea that scientists ultimately categorized them by four subtypes.

• Subtype 1: Subtype 1 is characterized by facial redness, flushing and visible broken blood vessels, sometimes referred to as “spider veins.”

• Subtype 2: This subtype is marked by acnelike breakouts, usually where the skin is very red. These breakouts tend to come and go. People with subtype 2 rosacea may experience oily skin and also suffer from spider veins. Raised patches of skin known as plaques also may be present.

Skin may sting and burn for individuals with subtypes 1 or 2. In addition, very sensitive skin is hallmark of both subtypes.

• Subtype 3: The AAD notes the rarity of subtype 3, which is characterized by thickening skin. Subtype 3 is often preceded by another subtype. Bumpy texture to the skin, thickening skin on the nose, visible broken blood vessels, and large pores also are symptomatic of subtype 3.

• Subtype 4: Subtype 4 occurs when people get rosacea in their eyes. In such instances, the eyes may exhibit one or more of many symptoms, including a watery or bloodshot appearance; a gritty feeling which makes affected persons feel as though they have sand in their eyes; burning or stinging eyes; very dry eyes; itchy eyes; sensitivity to light; and visible broken blood vessels on an eyelid.

Triggers of Rosacea

The AAD indicates that the skin is so sensitive that many things can contribute to rosacea. That’s why it’s so important that individuals and their skin doctors determine what may trigger their rosacea to flare up. Common triggers include sunlight, hairspray, heat, stress, alcohol, and spicy foods. In addition, the AAD notes that wind and cold, certain medications, exercise, and some makeup have been identified as rosacea triggers.

Rosacea is a common skin disease that can be painful but also manageable. More information about rosacea is available at www.aad.org.

First Church Ephrata would love to have you continue with them on the new series in October.

First Church Ephrata is located at 68 North Church Street, Ephrata, and they have a Traditional service at 8:30 a.m. and a Contemporary service at 10:30 a.m. They now have both services ‘live streamed’ for those of you who are wanting a morning service at home on their website at: ephratafirst.org, on YouTube at www.youtube.com/@ ephratafirstchurch9278 (click on LIVE) and on Facebook at facebook.com/ FirstChurchEphrata (click on MORE, LIVE). WHEN THINGS GO WRONG

One goes to bed to sleep; One lies there like a stone.

Pains from the hips to the legs Have begun to torment me.

In English we call it lumbago; German has another word, Which burns on the tongues

And makes the body weak.

Then one has to go to the bathroom; Oh my, what a time!

This great torture Is visited upon all kinds of people.

My wife says: It’s all notion. It comes right out of my head!

Especially when there’s cleaning to do Out in the old shed.

Thus she spoke not long ago, And now I get to see this: She has a broom for a crutch When things go wrong.

February 24, 1988 ***

With the passing of our “Alder Kummraad” on June 10, 1988, one of the most expressive voices on the Dutch world has been silenced. As far as we are able to determine, WANN DINGER IWWEL GEHNE is the next to last Dutch poem written by Ernest Waldo Bechtel, also known as “Der Buschgnippel,” for he wrote a dialect column in The Ephrata Review over that name from January of 1970 to June of 1988.

“Der Buschgnippel” was not unfamiliar with pain and illness was in his latter years, yet he bore these torments with a sense of humor as expressed so delightfully in WANN DINGER IWWEL GEHNE.

We dedicate this ECK to Mrs. Irene Bechtel, also fondly known as “die Minnie Schnaus,” for she was always by Ernie’s side with her own special smile and compassion. We plan to return to the poems of the late Ernest Waldo Bechtel from time to time, for his writings have greatly enriched our Pennsylvania German literature.

We note in WANN DINGER IWWEL GEHNE that Buschgnippel did not use a Dutch word for lumbago. Calling all Dutch word detectives! Was is unser Deitsch Watt for lumbago??? Losst uns wisse!!! Do muss widder Mischt bei!!!

Peace Garden Eagle Scout Project Benefits Community

Matthew Butz, a Scout in Adamstown Troop 61, recently completed his Eagle Scout project; making a difference in his community.

Matthew’s Eagle Scout Project was building the Peace Garden for Peace United Church of Christ. The garden is part of the outreach ministry of the church providing free fresh produce to the local community. This project included building raised garden beds, filling the beds with dirt, planting various vegetables, constructing a fence around the garden, and building a shed for tools, as well as a

garden produce stand that is placed at the entrance of the church. After the completion of the project, a water line was installed. The project required over 100 hours to finish. More than 21 adults and scouts helped complete this project.

Matthew is currently a sophomore at Cocalico High School.

He is shown in the photo with a basket of fresh picked vegetables harvested from his Eagle Scout project seen in the background.

Jonah 1:3 “But Jonah arose to flee to Tarshish from the presence of the Lord.”

Let’s begin with the command to Jonah. “Now the word of the Lord came to Jonah the son of Amittal, saying, “‘Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and cry out against it, for their wickedness has come up before Me’” (Jonah 1:12). Nineveh was the largest known city at the time and the most populated city around 700 B.C. Nineveh was founded by Nimrod, the greatgrandson of Noah. Nineveh was the capital

city of Assyria, a longstanding enemy of Israel. In the book of Nahum, the sin of Nineveh was cataloged as: violence, murder, lies, robbery, prostitution and witchcraft (Nahum 3:14). Frankly, I wouldn’t walk down the streets at night in any major city in the U.S. Not much has changed in 2,600 years.

God’s command to Jonah was to go and cry out in the city of coming judgment. What was Jonah’s response to God’s command? “But Jonah arose to flee.” What would your response be to a command like that? Would we follow or would we flee? There are plenty of commands in scripture that we run from, just like Jonah. Oh, we won’t admit to it, but disobedience (sin) is running from the presence of the Lord. All sin falls into two categories: either it’s sin of commission (we do what God says not to do), or sins of omission (not doing what God commands), as in Jonah’s case. Somehow, I think we are misled to believe that not

doing God’s will is somewhat better than doing what God forbids. It’s not! Sins of omission have the same spoiling and diminishing effects on our life as the sins of commission.

Let’s look further into Jonah’s flight… “He went down to Joppa and found a ship going to Tarshish; so he paid the fare.” It’s a funny thing, but there is a comparison here between Jochebed, the Mother of Moses, and Jonah. Jonah had to pay the fare, as he

ran from God’s will. Jochebed obeyed God’s will and saved Moses alive against the command of Pharaoh. When Pharaoh’s daughter found Moses, she had her servants find a wet nurse from the Hebrews and Jochebed was selected to nurse Moses, her own son. It doesn’t get any better than that, but wait, it does! On top of that, she was paid to raise him up. She chose God’s will and got paid as well. Jonah ran from God’s will and he paid the fare (in more ways than one.).

The voyage doesn’t go so well. “Then the Lord sent a great storm and the ship was about to break up. The mariners were afraid; and every man cried out to his god, and threw the cargo overboard.” Where is Jonah? He is asleep in the lowest part of the ship. It’s exhausting to run from God. Finally, the captain finds Jonah and they cast lots to see who is responsible for this storm. The lot falls on Jonah. The sailors are hysterical as they ask him, “who are you, and where are you from?” When they find out he is a Hebrew, they are all the more terrified. Now, Jonah and all of the mariners know the storm is because of his disobedience. Always remember, our sin and disobedience affects others. All of the contents of the ship were lost. At least Jonah took responsibility and left the outcome up to God. “Throw me overboard!” The mariners were reluctant to do this, and thus be responsible for

his death, so they tried to continue. Finally, they had no choice, and threw him overboard. The sea settled and they had a revival on the ship. So, God does turn evil into good, as with Joseph.

God prepared a great fish for a threeday ride to the shore. What amazes me is that it took Jonah three days in the whale’s belly to repent. One of my favorite verses is, “And the word of the Lord came to Jonah a second time” (Jonah 3:1). He does repent and goes to preach against the city. The entire city repents and changes their ways. God rescinds on the judgment. So, don’t say no to God’s commands. They aren’t suggestions. Always remember, you will pay the fare in more ways than one, and so will others. Save yourself a lot of grief. “To obey is better than sacrifice” (1st Samuel 15:22).

As the public library serving approximately 25,000 residents across Caernarvon Township, East Earl Town

ship, Earl Township, New Holland Borough, and Terre Hill Borough, the ELANCO Library has been a cornerstone of the community for more than 90 years. In 2024, the library welcomed over 56,000 visitors, offered 299 educational and community programs, and recorded more than 113,000 checkouts of materials. Funds raised through this event will support the library’s general operations and essential building expenses, including needed updates to the HVAC system. Each year, ELANCO Library must raise more than 60% of its annual budget, making community support vital to sustaining free access to resources, programs, and welcoming spaces for all. Tickets can be purchased in advance at the library beginning Wednesday, October 1 or from any ELANCO Library Board member, with any remaining tickets available at the door. The event will be an afternoon of fun, prizes, and fellowship while helping sustain the library’s vital role and tremendous value in the community.

East Cocalico Lions Help Revive Park In Reamstown

In September of 1993, the “Newton Overholzer Cocalico Creation,” a timberbuilt playground was dedicated in memory of a volunteer who dedicated years of service to the Reamstown Park. This playground remains a local favorite, often bustling with children and their families on any given day. This beloved playground has brought joy to countless children over the years but as time passes, it’s starting to show its age.

To ensure it remains a safe, welcoming, and exciting space for everyone, the Reamstown Memorial Park Association has decided it is time for a renovation of the playground. The East Cocalico Lions Club has a strong relationship with the park having helped found it in 1944 and has committed $10,000 to the playground’s renovation. But the club wanted to do

more. The solution was to apply for a grant to the Northeast Pennsylvania Lions Service Foundation.

The result of this request was the Lions Service Foundation approving the grant for $20,000. A check was presented to the Park at the club’s annual picnic.

The East Cocalico Lions Club whose motto is “We Serve” continues to prove “Where There is a Need, There is a Lion” and believes that the park and its playground is an integral part of the community and is proud and honored to be able to support the Reamstown Park.
