Barbara Klick shared her inspiring message of quality care improvement, diligence, growth, and advancement. She acknowledged the positive changes over the past few years. Through determination and a great leadership team, Sholom’s successes are being recognized time and again. Sholom’s New Mass Communications System Bolsters Security Preparedness

remendous thanks to friends of Sholom who responded with resounding support of more than $50,000 to meet Sholom’s immediate security needs. With this backing, Sholom has purchased the Informacast Communications Device and is implementing its components. This mass communications system can, with a single keystroke, dispatch simultaneous messages to a wide audience ensuring communication in times of crisis and has the ability to quickly secure buildings. Absent a crisis, the device will be used to share important updates and information.

Our donors understand that safety and security concerns throughout the world remain unabated. Their generosity allows Sholom to take definitive action to mitigate threats from outside and danger on our campuses. What can we expect from the Informacast during a crisis or dangerous situation? The Informacast enables desk-top telephones within the organization to simultaneously receive prerecorded messages comprised of safety information, specific instructions, and updates. Messages may be segmented by building or area. The device ensures swift communications and can be accessed remotely. The system will be programmed to transmit prerecorded messages concurrently to mobile telephones. The Informacast’s capability enables transmission of revised up-to-the-minute instructions, situation updates, and “All Clear” notifications. The integration between the Informacast and the recently upgraded ID badging system enables doors to be locked electronically and limit unwarranted access. Can the Informacast perform when there’s no emergency?

Major Gift to the Capital Campaign Unveiled by Sholom Auxiliary

he Sholom Auxiliary is thrilled to announce a $250,000 pledge to Sholom’s Care Comes First Capital Campaign. By a unanimous vote of its Board, and with great pride, the Sholom Auxiliary is excited to play an important role in this transformative endeavor. This gift will be used toward the renovation of the Nosh Nook located in the Knollwood Place Apartments on the Ackerberg Family Sholom West Campus in St. Louis Park. Long-planned renovations of the entire first floor of the Knollwood Place Apartments are underway with a completion date scheduled for Fall, 2020. In the words of Sholom CEO, Barbara Klick, “Our residents deserve bright, modern, comfortable, and safe surroundings. The status quo is no longer acceptable. We are delighted to see plans link design and function with resident needs, and we can hardly wait for them to come to fruition. The Knollwood community will become even stronger as we participate in this transformation.” Renovations will include a new welcoming lobby, game room, remodeled dining room, multipurpose event space, fitness area, and hospitality/conversation areas, all surrounding the Nosh Nook.

Sheryl Rutzick, President of the Auxiliary, and Susie Held, Sholom Community Liason, a member of Sholom’s staff and past Auxiliary President, are overjoyed that the Auxiliary’s gift will have such a major impact making the new Nosh Nook a reality. Food brings people together and the social aspect makes a difference in the tenant’s lives. The Nosh Nook has always been a gathering place and will become a focal point of activity in the new design. Susie and Sheryl jointly commented, “What an exciting and happy place the “Nosh” will be!” The Sholom Auxiliary remains steadfast in its mission to support Sholom’s residents. With this pledge, the Auxiliary has added the Capital Campaign to its proud list of accomplishments. Through its fundraising efforts, such as Food for Your Soul, the Auxiliary is able to sponsor the Mother's Day Tea, underwrite special funding for Music and Memory programs, and provide extras to make residents feel at home. Countless members, as well as generations preceding them, were instrumental in setting the stage for this magnificent gift. healthy surroundings for those whom the community has entrusted to us. In addition to the bricks and mortar, we are also charged with creating a loving and caring home for our residents. We honor the lives they’ve led and help them create a community of belonging at Sholom. We continue to ensure high quality for everyone.” Ms. Klick continued, “All parts of our jobs are vital. We understand the importance of holding the hand of a resident who needs to know we are there for them at the same time as we seek pledges for the Campaign. Moving forward with the Knollwood project is vital and encapsulates what I’ve shared today. Together we can reach our goals.” Kerry Bader, a Cabinet member and daughter of a former Sholom resident, introduced a short video taken at a spontaneous birthday party for her beloved father, Bill Aberman. Concerned that he may not live to celebrate his 92nd birthday, Sholom staff feted Bill with a surprise party. In Kerry’s words, “It was the most wonderful thing staff did for Dad. They would not take a penny from us.” Steve Gottlieb, Sholom Foundation President said, “You could have heard a pin drop during Kerry’s speech and the subsequent video. It was very powerful and impactful.”

Kerry offered, “I spoke from my heart and shared my experience with Sholom. I do understand that some may have had negative experiences with Sholom in the past, but all one has to do is talk to folks living at Knollwood Place Apartments or family members of residents at Sholom, to realize this is a new Sholom – the care is there and the people are truly happy. Isn’t that really the bottom line?” Polly and Michael Saxon are long-time lay leaders at Sholom. Mike is a past President of the Sholom Foundation, Polly is a past Sholom Board member, and together they serve as co-chairs of the Care Comes First Capital Campaign along with Amy and Stan Baratz. They remarked, “Many attendees were unfamiliar with Sholom’s recent and ongoing transformation. Barbara captivated the group with her insight, knowledge, and leadership. New friendships developed from the afternoon. This will help build support to share positive messages about Sholom’s future. We are pleased to be able to open our home to host this gathering.” The next focus of the Capital Campaign is the Knollwood Place Apartments renovation project, which, as Barbara Klick voiced, is imperative. The total cost is $4.9 million. $2.8 million in cash is available from Sholom’s Care Comes First Capital Campaign with a current need of $2.1 million for this project. Hemingway’s Protégés at Sholom

he sheer excitement and personal satisfaction of individuals celebrating newly-found skills and creative expression were palpable as participants talked about the Knollwood Writers’ Circle. “My life as a young girl was molded by what happened in the time of the Great Depression. I tried very hard to be an understanding little girl.” So begins Nettie Kramer’s heartfelt essay on her experience as a young child during the Great Depression of 1929 and its lasting effects.

Alison Morse, an accomplished author and teacher, facilitated each of the 10 workshop sessions held at the Knollwood Place Apartments. Her goal was for participants to find their voice on the written page through the lens of memoir writing. The students’ essays melded their ideas and feelings with writing techniques learned in each class. Individualized notes and group feedback helped the writers hone their craft and more fully express themselves through their writing.

Nettie Kramer enjoyed writing in in her youth, but as an adult, it had not been part of her life. She eagerly seized this opportunity and joined The Writers’ Circle stating, “I was excited to try my hand at storytelling and am happy I did. I wrote from my heart. Alison helped me tell my stories. I’ve had many experiences in my life, and it is thrill to get them onto paper.”

Shayne Karasov turned research into her family history, dating back centuries, into a beautiful essay. “Here the caravan traveled valleys that were barren and cold. Camp began the prelude to creating Shayne Karasov home life along the way. I’m imagining tents, cooking areas, and a place for ritual and study.” She went on, “This was a wonderful opportunity to have a special dedicated time each week where we could express our individuality and creativity. I loved the lessons and methods of storytelling. I felt connected to the other writers. This workshop was a wonderful gift allowing us to exercise our brains.” Bev Davis focused her beautiful essay on a friend and their close connection. Another Knollwood resident, Steven Spielberg, stated, “I am so pleased for this chance to express myself through the writing assignments. This class helped me expand my skills.” Allison Morse & Bev Davis Steven wrote of his personal experiences as well as hearkening back to his years as a college mathematics professor. Marilyn Rovner enthusiastically shared, “The workshop was excellent and I learned so much. I am pleased to be able to write my stories in a much better way. The tools we learned such as using color, place, and time made the writing much more interesting. These are qualities I seek when I’m looking for a book to read. I’m thrilled I can now use those same techniques." Sholom is proud to offer enriching and stimulating programs. The Writers’ Circle was funded by Rimon: The Minnesota Jewish Arts Council, and a grant by the Oren and Sharron Steinfeldt Family Foundation. I am so thankful to Sholom Home for helping me save my brother! He was in the ICU for a month fighting for his life. I was thrilled when he was able to move to Sholom. The professional staff understood that he was not ready to give up and they continue to work hard, giving him the care he needs to rehabilitate. The improvement is astounding. Our mother, Bernie Mosow, passed away recently while a resident of Sholom Home West. The nursing assistants were kind and compassionate and open to suggestions from our family. Along with the Hospice Staff, they always made sure she was comfortable and well cared for. The nursing staff did a wonderful job coordinating care with the aides. Sheryl McCormick, a nursing supervisor always supported her staff and even came in to help on the weekend during a snowstorm. Just knowing Sheryl was there when our mom was near the end of her life was a great comfort to our family. For five years prior, Bernie had been living at the Roitenberg Assisted Living with our dad. The acuity of our mother’s care was increasing and with the guidance and expertise of Becky Kasper, the 4th floor charge nurse, together we determined that Bernie needed the level of care offered at Sholom Home West. We were pleased with the transition and our thanks to all of the staff at both facilities.

What’s Happening at the Sholom…

Ackerberg Family Sholom West Campus

Residents at Sholom Home West enjoyed a puppy parade complete with cute dogs, a few barks, and some puppies even sat on residents’ laps!

The Computer Lab welcomes a steady stream of staff members brushing up on skills-development as well as participating in online in-service education courses.

Sheldon, Natalie, and other residents graciously accepted generous shalach manot bags prepared by friends of the PJ Library. These bags of treats and goodies celebrate the holiday of Purim by extending friendship and traditionally, ensuring all have enough to eat on the holiday.

Honoring a long St. Paul tradition, the title of â€œKnightâ€? was conferred upon several residents during a visit of the St. Paul Winter Carnival Royalty.

Residents are very proud of their handiwork and creativity as they jointly worked on entries for the Ice Palace Competition.

COVID-19: An Urgent Request For Community Support

he Torah teaches us that it is a mitzvah to honor the elderly. Today, during an unprecedented moment, as the COVID-19 pandemic spreads we call upon you to fulfill this important mitzvah. Sholom has mobilized our teams to ensure the health and safety of the more than 1000 seniors entrusted to Sholom’s care every day of the year. These efforts come at a significant cost and we need your support. We have implemented measures to protect our seniors and staff. We anticipate needing an additional $500,000 or more in emergency funds for additional measures which include: • Ensuring adequate staffing. More than 900 employees care for our residents. Costs will mount for overtime pay, additional care givers, and temporary replacements due to illness. This need will likely increase as the pandemic advances. • Investing in additional personal protective equipment like face masks, gowns, gloves and hand sanitizers. • Enhancing individualized activity programming for our residents most of who are vulnerable to COVID-19 and are at risk of mental health challenges as a result of social distancing. In the absence of all group programming, funds can purchase iPads and other forms of technology for videos, live streaming, and face-to-face conversations with loved ones. A similar priority is the provision of individualized projects and supplies. • Support and education for front-line staff who provide direct care for the elderly. We anticipate the need for short-term rehabilitation services to dwindle as elective surgeries have been eliminated. Individuals moving into Sholom’s campuses are delayed due to COVID-19. As a result, the impact of these developments to Sholom is profound: we expect revenue to fall by $3 million in the next five months resulting in a significant budget shortfall.
