A Love Story at Sholom . . .
T
hrough the generosity of the Firefly Scientist’s Foundation grant Sholom now has the financial resources to dramatically increase not only the variety of impactful therapeutic recreation programs at Sholom facilities, but the scope of these programs as well.
This is a story about just one of the programs now taking place Jacobi and his “grandfriend,” Florence at Sholom facilities on a regular basis. In partnership with MacPhail School for Music, elders on the Shaller Family Sholom East Campus are meeting weekly with two dozen pre-school youngsters who take the city bus with their teachers to participate in MacPhail’s Side-by-Side music program. The youngsters each partner with a “grandfriend” at Sholom. A Special Connection In this story, a young boy named Jacobi developed a very special connection with his grandfriend, Florence, a retired school teacher. Florence’s daughter was delighted to see how happy her mother felt about seeing all the children, especially her little friend, Jacobi. In fact, when her daughter would tell Florence that she was coming by for a visit, Florence would make it very clear: “That’s fine if you come over, but don’t interfere in my time with my kids!” continued on page 7

t has been four months since I started my role at Sholom and it has been an exciting time for me getting to know everyone at Sholom and in our community. Sholom exists to serve our residents, tenants, clients and our community; and I am finding that there are so many individuals who are passionate about Sholom! It has become very clear to me that our mission, vision, strategic goals and tactics are absolutely essential to Sholom’s future as a value leader in this changing eldercare market. The Sholom Board and our Sholom team will bring forth the following strategic pillars and accompanying goals that have been identified as our focus, along with the descriptors I have added that will be reviewed by our Board on a continuing basis. • Value/quality of care and services Focus on the continuum of health, safety and services to provide an exceptional experience in a Jewish environment for our population and communities we serve. • People Engage the talents of employees, providers, board and committee directors, members, volunteers and community resources in partnership to achieve our mission and vision. Our work is built on our strong foundational values of care, compassion and community. • Financial viability Position Sholom to be a financially strong and sustainable organization through the creation of value for our populations and the communities we serve. • Mission/business development Maximize Sholom’s 100-plus year history of playing a vital role in our Jewish community by creating market differentiation through our performance, reputation and strategic alignments. As we work together on our strategic plan, these identified goals will be our focus and foundation. q The care my dad received throughout
his stay was exemplary. The nurses and aides in the Chapman were kind and loving. Despite some real challenges, the end-of-life issues were beautifully handled. The gift of time is precious and treasured and could not have happened without Sholom.
Long Term Care: What Is a Good Daughter or Son to Do? What do we owe our parents? A friend recently said that we have an obligation to care for our aging parents but I disagree. I believe we have an obligation to see that our parents are “well cared for.” The ideal situation is to provide this care ourselves. Our parents provided love, nurturing and security to us when we were children and we want them to know we will look after them in later life. Why not care for them at home? Much as we may want to, it is not always possible to provide the care ourselves. Health needs and daily care for older adults frequently require a higher level of nursing skill or even stamina than we possess. No matter how much you may love your mom or dad, if it requires a two-person transfer to get your parent out of a wheelchair, you are not going to be able to do this alone. What do I do then? So this is when you start considering ways to make sure your mom or dad is well cared for. You may have promised your mom that you will “never put her in a nursing home.” Or you may have a mom like mine that “doesn’t want to be a burden to her kids.” Either way, a lot will depend on circumstances over which you have no control. It comes down to this: you will do your best to manage the uncertainty that your parents face in late life.
Why choose a nursing home at this time? A nursing home can provide two things to reduce uncertainty: long-term care and 24-hour skilled nursing. A compassionate nurse I know put it this way: “People do not come to a nursing home to die. They come to live out the last chapter of their life as fully as possible.” The best nursing homes do just that. All nursing homes are regulated and inspected by the State of Minnesota and cost of care is pretty consistent as a result. The difference is how well they treat your parents. Does the staff treat them as if they were their own parents? Does the staff view your parents as the unique individuals they are? What does a good daughter/son do to see that our parents are well cared for? Look beyond the surface. Is it a place with dedicated staff who are skilled in nursing care and will see that your mom or dad get loving, compassionate care from well-trained individuals? • Look at quality of life. Ask to meet the therapeutic recreation staff and the spiritual care team. Ask about activities, outings, and non-drug interventions for pain. • Get involved. Get to know the people that provide care for your parent and see that they are recognized for every single good thing they do. • Go on outings, help push wheelchairs to events and bring trays at mealtimes. continued on page 4

Jay Jacobson, the first Executive Director of Sholom Foundation, and Executive Director Emeritus since 2010, passed away at his home in Boca Raton, FL, a day short of his 82nd birthday. Jay was an exceptional individual in both his private and professional life. A man who adored his family, Jay was also a loyal friend and a passionate fundraiser for the Jewish Community. In addition to Sholom Foundation, Jay used his considerable skills in raising funds for the Minneapolis Jewish Federation and the United Jewish Appeal. During his many years with Sholom Foundation, Jay was instrumental in building a multi-million dollar endowment for support of Sholom as well as several successful Sholom capital campaigns. Jay Jacobson leaves behind a legacy touching the lives of countless individuals and their loved ones. He will long be remembered for his remarkable contribution to the Twin Cities Jewish Community and beyond. “Jay was force to be reckoned with but he had a big and generous heart, and he cared deeply about his family, his friends and Sholom.” —Mike Saxon, Sholom Foundation President

What’s a Daughter or Son to Do? continued from page 3 • Make sure every employee there knows you are a loving daughter who wants the best for your parent. What Does Mom or Dad want? I don’t know what your parents want but my mom has a tee-shirt that says “Don’t tell this old lady what to do!” She wants to be her sassy, feisty, independent self to her dying breath. And while she finds things
she doesn’t like about being 92, at no stage in her life was everything exactly as she would have wished. No toddler, no teenager, no adult ever gets life exactly as they want it. This doesn’t change—you’ve always had to “make the best of it” your whole life. Just the fact that your parent has YOU makes a huge difference! Take the time to enjoy each other. You won’t regret it! — A daughter of elderly parents
Jackie Anderson—1st Graduate of the Licensed Practical Nurse Sholom/Rasmussen College Scholarship Program Jackie Anderson, a Sholom Home Health Care and Hospice aide for the past four years, had always planned to go back to school sometime. It just so happened that Jackie was given the opportunity to participate in the Sholom/Rasmussen College joint LPN program on scholarship from Sholom. Jackie tells us that working, going to school, studying and taking care of her nine-yearold son was a lot on her plate. But the end result of completing the program, passing her boards and becoming an LPN was worth it. “The entire time that I was taking course work at Rasmussen and doing my clinicals at Sholom I received incredible support from my co-workers! This experience has given me so much confidence in my work here at Sholom and in my life,” says Jackie. “I am so very grateful to Sholom for this opportunity.” Jackie continues her work with Sholom residents and elderly clients in the community with a new goal of becoming a Registered Nurse in the not so distant future. Go Jackie!

Did You Know? Sholom Healthcare Academy trains and certifies nursing assistants and home health aides with intensive on-site education that includes more days of supervised clinical practice working with residents than that offered by other programs; AND includes a required customer service training component twice a week throughout the eight week course. • The joint Sholom/Rasmussen College Licensed Practical Nurse training program begun in October 2015, is producing graduates who are now passing their LPN certification boards and bringing those new skills back to their work for Sholom. • Sholom has a competitive scholarship program and flexible work schedules to help team members while they are in nursing school. • These training initiatives and the scholarship assistance are taking place because of the generous and visionary support of our Sholom donors.

Walter Schwarz—This WWII Army Veteran’s Story is Now on Record in the Library of Congress Bentson Assisted Living resident, Walter Schwarz, 95 years young, is a man with quite a history. Born in Romania, Walter’s father sent him to Czechoslovakia to a textile school to learn his father’s trade. In 1938 when Germany invaded the country, Jews were no longer allowed at the school, so Walter returned home. After the invasion of Poland and the war began, Walter’s family made their way to America. Walter tried to enlist in the U.S. Armed Forces but refugees were not allowed in the service until the draft was established following the attack on Pearl Harbor and the U.S. entered WWII. Because Walter spoke many languages, including German, he was recruited into the army with other European refugees, and following basic training in Virginia, they were sent to Camp Ritchie in Maryland for training in Walter holds the 2012 Ritchie Boys German warfare. These recruits who spoke the language of the enemy Reunion photo became known as “The Ritchie Boys,” and were utilized in the interrogation of German prisoners-of-war and other activities in Europe intended to undermine the enemy. It is believed that The Ritchie Boys played a significant role in helping to defeat the Germans. In 2012, nearly 70 years after Walter participated in the decisive victory at the Battle of the Bulge, The Ritchie Boys gathered together for the very first time—an event that Walter will never forget. This past year, Walter was interviewed about his WWII experience, which is now on record in the United States Library of Congress.
A Rehabilitation Experience Exceeds Expectations! I was dead set against going to Sholom for rehabilitation therapy after my knee replacement surgery. But after twelve days at the Shaller Family Sholom East Campus, I had very different feelings about the actual experience. Following knee replacement surgery I was in a great deal of pain. The thought of trying to take care of myself with such painful and limited mobility was overwhelming, not to mention just finding the wherewithal to do the required exercises to regain range of motion and use of my new knee. I quickly realized that I was in the best place possible. I can’t imagine a recovery as good as it was without Sholom. I was very pleased with the staff and service during my stay at Sholom. The care staff and the physical and occupational therapists were kind and very helpful. I learned how to get in and out of a car and other everyday activities without hurting my knee. The warm water therapy pool was especially beneficial and I continue to use it several months later. My stay at Sholom was a wonderful experience and I am very grateful that Sholom is here for our community. —Susan Lepow, Transitional Care client at Sholom

I’m thrilled to announce that the Auxiliary will be in very good hands! Please join me in welcoming, Sheryl Rutzick, the new Sholom Auxiliary President! A bit about Sheryl… Sheryl’s connection to Sholom began when her late fatherin-law, Yale Rutzick, lived at Knollwood Place Apartments. While spending time with him, she realized the importance of a Jewish Senior Living Community and how much her father-in-law benefitted from all the services and programs Sholom offers. Sheryl Rutzick For the past year, Sheryl has held the position of Auxiliary Treasurer, which made her an ideal candidate for the role of president. She played an integral role in the 2016 Knish sales by overseeing the finances and assisting in organizing all the orders. In addition, Sheryl has a wide variety of volunteer experience including work as the Hamentashen Maven and Committee Chairperson at B’nai Emet as well as Adath Jeshurun. She currently serves in a variety of volunteer jobs at JFCS, including being a driver for the Deikel Transportation Services. Sheryl is extremely committed to the organization and we are very lucky to have her as the leader of the Auxiliary. Congratulations, Sheryl!

A Love Story at Sholom continued from page 1 When Florence began to receive hospice services, she still participated in the Side-by-Side program, until one week when she didn’t feel well enough to attend the program. Jacobi was very sad that his special grandfriend was not at the program. After checking with Florence, the Sholom staff, and the nursery school staff, it was decided that all the children would go up to visit Florence. She was so very moved and happy to see everyone. The following week, Florence was able to join the children and the other elders to the delight of everyone, especially Jacobi.
Florence’s daughter tells us that the Side-by-Side program was a crucial part of her mother’s last months of her life. Florence thought about the children often and always looked forward to the program each week. It gave her so much pleasure to be with Jacobi and the other children.

Florence passed away shortly after that, but both the nursery school and Sholom staff, as well as the youngsters’ parents agreed that the experience for the children and the elders was very positive and a meaningful learning opportunity for everyone.
The children continue to come every week to sing and dance with their grandfriends at Sholom, their comfort level increasing as they begin to understand that just because someone is old, it doesn’t mean they can’t still sing and have fun together.

When Music Awakens the Mind Every week like clockwork, Iris, a Music Therapist from MacPhail School of Music visits the elders in the Hodroff Memory Care on the Ackerberg Family Sholom West Campus. Iris knows that music awakens the mind. She gives each participant a section of an elastic cloth rope to hold during the program. Together, the elders move to the music with each other and their section of the cloth rope, singing, humming and moving connected with one another— participating in whatever way that works for them. Interspersed in the circle are family members, volunteers, and staff enjoying the connection that Iris has helped to create for everyone. Melissa and Brianna, the music therapists who visit the Shaller Family Sholom East Campus, encourage creativity, reminiscences, movement and participation with their music. The use of simple instruments helps participants to engage with the music. The residents with severe memory impairment often start off slowly, sometimes sleeping or dozing off. But soon they are WIDE AWAKE, smiling and laughing, verbalizing and humming. Music Therapist Melissa and residents with their instruments

q Our mom lived at Knollwood Place for several happy years, then spent some months in Sholom Home West recuperating from a stroke, and now at the age of 95, she lives in Hodroff Memory Care. In all those years, my mom received wonderful care in a wonderful environment. From her special 90th birthday party at Knollwood Place to the incredible music programs that she looks forward to and participates in, to the loving care she receives from the staff— Sholom has been there for our mom for all these years. Even the music therapist who brings in drums, colorful sticks and other “instruments” that everyone can use to make music, is so connected to our mom and the others. I just can’t imagine any place better than Sholom.
