Summer Internship Fair

The Summer Internship Fair, initiated earlier this semester, marks an important phase in the academic and professional journey of our students. Over the past months, it has served as a platform to connect students with a wide spectrum of organisations, offering them early exposure to the expectations and realities of the professional world.

With participation from a diverse set of organisations—including global firms, research institutions, financial services, consulting, technology, and development sector organisations—students have had the opportunity to explore varied career pathways. These interactions have enabled them to engage in meaningful dialogue, understand industry expectations, and reflect on their own areas of interest and growth.

The range of roles offered spans across product development, technology, finance, consulting, research, and policy. Such breadth ensures that students are not only able to apply their academic learning but also begin to appreciate the interdisciplinary nature of real-world problem solving.

Across batches, several students have secured internships, with a few receiving PrePlacement Offers—an early indication of both potential and preparedness. More importantly, the process itself has encouraged students to navigate choices, build resilience, and develop a clearer sense of direction.

Internships today are not merely a component of academic progression; they are an essential bridge between learning and practice. They provide context, deepen understanding, and cultivate the professional maturity required to engage with an increasingly complex and dynamic world.

Internship Organizations

Career Development Center hosted the GoDaddy Airo Buildathon, where students built websites and web applications using Airo AI Builder, an AIpowered platform that enables users to create digital products through natural language inputs without requiring coding skills.

During the three-hour session, students developed functional applications, gaining hands-on experience in rapid prototyping and deployment. Airo AI Builder, integrated within the GoDaddy ecosystem, offers features such as hosting, authentication, and deployment, allowing users to move from idea to a live product seamlessly.

Students noted the ease of use and the platform’s ability to handle technical aspects such as security and deployment.

The GoDaddy Airo Buildathon was easily one of the most hands-on and engaging sessions I’ve experienced. What stood out right away was the format. Instead of just learning, we were actually building.

All 240 of us in B315 had three hours to find a real problem, figure out how to solve it, and ship something working using Airo. In between, I got to have conversations with GoDaddy mentors who gave real-time feedback on my product - which helped sharpen both the idea and how I was approaching it.

I built Practis, a platform for lawyers, doctors, and chartered accountants to manage their online presence and client interactions. In those three hours, I put together professional profiles, an AI-powered chatbot for client queries, appointment scheduling, and a basic payment flow. Seeing something functional come together that quickly was honestly one of the better feelings I’ve had at an event like this.

It felt less like a session and more like a real product sprint. What made it even more exciting was looking around the room - students from all branches, not just CSE, were building real, useful things. That’s what AI-assisted development does: it lowers the barrier and lets anyone with a good idea actually execute on it.

Grateful to the CDC and GoDaddy for putting this together.

Reading the City Exploring Urban Systems and Futures

Have you ever tried to read a city the way you read a book, layer by layer, story by story? On 23 April, students of International Relations and Governance Studies (IRGS), accompanied by several faculty members, attended an experiential workshop titled “Your City and You” led by Mriganka Saxena, an Architect and Urban Designer with two decades of practice in urban planning and policy, and extensive experience working with public agencies and multilateral partners.

Through an experiential exercise of distinctive urban sites, participants reflected on topography, socio-economic patterns, mobility, culture, and the genius loci, building group cohesion while learning to decode the qualities that make cities unique. This exercise widened into systems thinking with an understanding of India’s urbanization story, its scale, diversity, and the challenges of rapid growth. Students examined the practical roles of agencies such as PWDs, Metro Rail Corporations, and Municipal Development Bodies, and discussed why coordinated planning, realistic financing, and clear institutional responsibilities are essential for resilient infrastructure and inclusive urban settings.

The session opened a dialogue that encouraged students to observe and document local conditions, prototype small interventions, and engage with communities and local institutions inviting IR students to explore opportunities and career domains in urban planning, governance, public policy, research, and urban innovation, encouraging them to see how their discipline connects with shaping sustainable and inclusive cities.

The workshop deepened my understanding of urbanisation as not just a developmental issue but also one closely linked to public policy and governance, making it especially relevant to International Relations through its connection to institutions, decision-making, and societal transformation. I was also able to relate many of the discussions to the Visualising International Relations course, particularly in understanding how spatial and structural frameworks influence political and social realities at multiple levels.

Every year, in the second week of April, we gather for SNU Day, but the 15th carried a quiet weight of memory, gratitude, and becoming.

Founders’ Day, as we fondly call it, unfolded in the presence of our founders and trustees: Mrs. Roshni Nadar Malhotra, Chairperson, HCLTech and Trustee, Shiv Nadar Foundation; Mrs. Kiran Nadar, Trustee, Shiv Nadar Foundation; Chancellor, Mr. Shikhar Malhotra; and Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ananya Mukherjee. Around them, the University in its fullest form: deans, faculty, non-teaching colleagues, students, alumni, and their families, all coming to a shared center of belonging. A day to say thank you; a day to celebrate the graduating Class of 2026.

With the Indian classical invocation setting the tone, our student hosts, Naman Singhal (B.Tech. in CSE) and Mahalakshmi L (BMS) from the graduating class took us through the evening, weaving in their nostalgia

for all things SNU. The satirical skit by the Imprints Drama Club, a student gliding into Michael Jackson’s moonwalk, and the soulful rendition of the 90s by Snuphoria made the evening truly memorable.

There were milestones this year: the inaugural Student Awards, a moment to recognise journeys still in motion and the second edition of the Distinguished Alumni Awards, stories that have already travelled far beyond campus, yet remain tethered to it.

But the heart of the day, as always, was the conversation with the Founders. With honest and unfiltered questions from the students, the conversations held lightness and depth in equal measure.

With a quiet, disarming reminder that we, all present here today, are living in Mr. Shiv Nadar’s dream, in the words of Chancellor Shikhar Malhotra, we were reminded that we are part of something far larger - a remarkable legacy that we are deeply grateful to belong to.

Design is often seen as the art of making things look good. But in the real world, design goes far beyond aesthetics; it shapes experiences, influences decisions, and creates tangible value.

On 14 March, students across Communication Design, Product Design, Animation & VFX, and Strategic Design Management attended a masterclass titled “From Creativity to Value Creation: Designing for Real Impact,” led by Nishant Kaku, Head of Design and Research at Housing.com (REA India). Nishant brought over two decades of experience at the intersection of UX, technology, and business.

Through interactive polls, real industry case studies, and practical frameworks, the masterclass encouraged students to rethink the role of design, shifting their perspective from craftdriven work to value-driven thinking.

Key Insights

• How designers define the right problems before jumping to solutions

• Balancing creativity with real-world constraints

• Collaborating effectively with product, technology, and business teams

• Moving beyond execution toward strategic thinking and ownership

HackData 2026, organised by the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at Shiv Nadar University and sponsored by Hewlett Packard Enterprise, brought together 150+ students from across institutions for a dynamic celebration of innovation and technology.

The event featured three flagship competitions- Code Duels, TriNetra CTF, and a 24-hour Hackathon- each testing participants across coding, cybersecurity, and real-world problem solving. While Code Duels and TriNetra CTF saw intense competition and strategic thinking, the hackathon challenged teams to build impactful solutions around the theme “Shared Autonomy” across both hardware and software tracks.

As part of the jury, Rajendra Babu G, Data Analytics and AIOps Engineering Manager CCSE (R&D), HPE, and Dharmendra, Director, HPE Labs, engaged closely with student teams, sharing industry insights, mentoring participants, and evaluating solutions on the final judging panel.

HPE on campus for HackData 2026

Getting hired today is no longer about clearing a straightforward interview; the expectation has shifted to how well a student can think through a problem. In conversation with Rajendra Babu G, Data Analytics and AIOps Engineering Manager CCSE (R&D) at Hewlett Packard Enterprise, we explored how this shift is reflected in HackData 2026 and the growing role of industry–academia collaboration. He spoke about the importance of initiatives like HackData in preparing students for real-world situations, where the ability to think critically, adapt quickly, and apply knowledge effectively becomes essential

On standout ideas from the hackathon

What stood out to me was the strong focus on solving real-world problems with cost-effective approaches that can create meaningful societal value. Projects such as Blind Spot, CivicMitra, and GitHub automation using Agentic AI tools demonstrated impressive technical depth within a limited timeframe.

Equally notable was the students’ fluency with AI tools, their ability to collaborate effectively, and their openness to learning new technologies while building solutions.

On the role of initiatives like HackData

Hackathons and early industry engagement initiatives play a critical role in strengthening the bridge between academia and industry. They not only help students apply their knowledge to realworld challenges but also enable organisations to identify and nurture emerging talent early.

Advice for aspiring technologists

Many students assume that technical knowledge alone is enough for a successful career; however, building a strong career goes beyond that. It requires solid fundamentals, a problem-solving mindset for real-world challenges, continuous curiosity and learning, and the ability to collaborate effectively as part of a team.

Swati Sawhney

Head, Early Career and Talent Brand Strategy, Southeast Asia, Oceania, and India Head, Ericsson

We spoke with Swati Sawhney on the sidelines of the placement process and the Ericsson Edge Academia Program to understand how Ericsson prepares students and graduates for real-world roles in telecom and emerging technologies.

Drawing on her experience in early career hiring and academia engagement, Swati shares insights into the Ericsson Edge Academia Program and the two-year Ascent Graduate Program, both designed to bridge the gap between campus learning and industry expectations

Powering Careers in Telecom

Could you tell us about the opportunities Ericsson offers for early-career professionals?

Ericsson offers several opportunities for students and fresh graduates to transition smoothly into the telecom and technology industry. For early-career professionals, the focus is on building industry readiness, not just hiring. These opportunities include learning-led programs, internships, and a dedicated graduate hiring track that supports fresh graduates through structured training, mentorship, and onthe-job exposure. The emphasis is on preparing graduates to become industry-ready professionals rather than expecting them to be fully ready on day one.

Tell us about the Ericsson Edge Academia Program. Ericsson Edge was created to address a gap we observed in graduate readiness. While engaging with students across campuses, we found that many graduates lacked certain industry-relevant skills, which meant organisations had to spend several months retraining them after hiring. The sixmonth program was designed to move this training phase into the campus years. By working with pre-final-year students, Ericsson Edge helps build essential telecom and technology fundamentals, so students are better prepared for full-time roles.

What does the Ericsson Edge program include?

The Ericsson Edge program combines structured online learning with in-person engagement. Students begin with web-based learning modules developed by Ericsson on core technologies such as 5G, AI, automation, and telecom fundamentals. These modules include assessments to help students track their progress. This is complemented by instructor-led workshops, where senior Ericsson leaders with decades of industry experience interact directly with students, explain real-world applications, clarify concepts, and share practical insights. Students who complete both components receive digital certifications at the end of the program.

Can you tell us about the Ascent Graduate Program at Ericsson?

The Ascent Graduate Program is Ericsson’s structured graduate hiring and development program for all fresh graduates recruited from campuses. Every graduate hired through campus placements becomes part of this program. It is a two-year development journey where Ericsson invests significantly in grooming early-career talent. The first year focuses on induction, rotations, and upskilling to make graduates industryready, while the second year focuses on helping them grow as professionals through advanced learning, exposure, and career development support. Notably, there is no bond associated with the program.

When engaging with students across Indian campuses, what gaps do you commonly observe?

One of the most common gaps I see is interview readiness. My best advice to students, especially when it comes to resumes, is that less is more. Focus on projects you have genuinely worked on and truly understand, because recruiters do not

take long to recognise when a candidate is exaggerating their experience.

It is perfectly acceptable to say that you supported a project or were part of a larger team, rather than claiming ownership of work you did not lead. Being honest about your contribution is always better than exaggeration.

If a student wants to prepare for a career at Ericsson while still in university, what should they focus on?

Students should start by strengthening their fundamentals. Computer science students should have a strong grasp of programming basics, particularly languages like Python, and an understanding of cloud concepts. Students interested in telecom roles must understand how communication systems and networks work at a basic level. Beyond technical skills, students should focus on depth rather than volume on their resumes.

Exploring Innovations in the Power Sector

At a recent visit to the Bharat Electricity Summit 2026, engineering and Ph.D. students had the opportunity to interact with organisations and startups and gain exposure to the evolving landscape of the power sector. The summit, themed “Electrifying Growth. Empowering Sustainability. Connecting Globally.”, brought together ideas, technologies, and stakeholders shaping the future of energy.

Through these interactions, students gained insight into how classroom concepts translate into real-world applications. From renewable energy systems and green hydrogen to energy storage and grid modernisation, the experience offered a deeper understanding of how large-scale energy systems are built and operated.

“Learning about new innovations and technologies at the summit opened my mind to the possibilities of modern energy systems. We learned about many innovations taking place in the industry, technologies like hydrogen power generation using solid electrolyte electrolysis, drone-based transmission line stringing, and dry resin transformers. Interactions with companies such as Honeywell and RollsRoyce, along with insights into developments like biogasbased engines, were particularly insightful,” says Sayantan Hait, a second-year Electrical and Computer Engineering student, who was part of a group of engineering students that visited the Summit.

The students were accompanied by Himanshu Sekhar Sahu, Assistant Professor at the School of Engineering, along with members of the Career Development Center team.

CDC advisory will now move to a streamlined, tech-enabled workflow to bring greater structure and efficiency to student interactions. QR-based check-ins will enable real-time attendance tracking, while AI-powered transcripts will support clear and consistent session summaries. This shift allows advisors to focus more on meaningful conversations while ensuring better record-keeping and follow-ups. Arnav Aggarwal, a third-year BMS student and CDC volunteer, contributed to the ideation and implementation of this workflow.

Building Careers in a Rapidly Evolving Logistics Industry

“One strong project beats many certificates.” This was one of the most important takeaways from the session “Aligning Skills and Specialisation with Industry Expectations for Business Graduates,” led by Pankaj Kalass, Vice-President, People Operations at Delhivery.

Drawing from his experience in the logistics and supply chain sector, Mr. Kalass walked students through how the industry is expanding rapidly, fuelled by the growth of e-commerce, quick commerce, and evolving customer expectations. He explained how scale and

Logistics may not always appear to be a glamorous industry, the pace of learning it offers can lead to faster career progression than in more traditional sectors.

automation are not only transforming operations but also creating new and specialised roles. Mr. Kalass shared a candid perspective, noting that while logistics may not always appear to be a glamorous industry, the pace of learning it offers can lead to faster career progression than in more traditional sectors.

From an HR perspective, his guidance was refreshingly grounded. Mr. Kalass encouraged students to focus on building meaningful, outcome-driven projects rather than accumulating certificates, and to develop a strong command over their chosen specialisations.

In this interview with Pankaj Kalass, Vice-President, People Operations at Delhivery, we extend the conversation beyond the classroom, exploring how technology, automation, and scale are reshaping roles, skills, and career pathways.

The logistics sector has evolved rapidly in recent years. How have these changes led to the emergence of new roles and skill sets?

Over the last five years, logistics has undergone a fundamental shift driven by quick commerce, automation, and technology-led operations. These changes have accelerated the growth of new-age logistics companies, many of which are growing at double-digit rates, far outpacing traditional supply chain players. As a result, the sector has seen the emergence of new roles across technology, automation, program management, and network engineering.

Automation and technology are reshaping logistics. What kinds of roles and capabilities are becoming more critical as a result of this transformation?

As logistics become more automated and technology-driven, roles are emerging around managing and maintaining these new systems. This includes roles focused on automation and network engineering, sorter operations and maintenance, and managing advanced automation devices used in warehouses and hubs.

Beyond warehousing, innovation is extending to areas such as drone-based delivery, high-value and specialised sortation, and research-led solutions like Unit Load Devices.

What skills matter most today?

The ability to identify stress points, use technology intelligently, and design practical, scalable solutions matters far more today than domain knowledge alone.Since logistics is an intensely people-facing industry, people management is a critical skill. Young professionals often find themselves managing large frontline teams early in their careers. This requires emotional intelligence, patience, and the ability to remain calm under pressure.

What advice would you give to students entering the logistics sector to help them learn quickly and build long-term careers?

Logistics may not appear glamorous at first, and the early months can be demanding. However, those who invest time in understanding operations at ground level often experience accelerated learning and rapid career growth.

Do you see logistics as a strong launchpad for future founders?

Logistics touches almost every sector and provides a holistic understanding of how businesses function end-to-end. This kind of accelerated, cross-functional learning is invaluable for anyone looking to start a venture.

Goldman Sachs Possibilities Summit

One of the world’s most respected financial institutions and our prestigious, long-standing placement partner, Goldman Sachs, conducted an insightful session as part of the Goldman Sachs Possibilities Summit 2025–2026.

The session was led by Krishnamoorthy A, Vice-President, Human Capital Management and Operations Lead, and was moderated by Rommie Ghotra, Associate, University Relations at Goldman Sachs.

Unlike a typical organisation know-how session, the Possibilities Summit stood out for its candid conversations. The leadership shared personal experiences that made the corporate world feel tangible and relatable for students. The session offered insights into career opportunities at Goldman Sachs, its work culture, and a realistic perspective on what it takes to build a successful career at the firm.

Mr. Krishnamoorthy emphasised the importance of developing one’s strengths rather than becoming preoccupied with weaknesses, highlighting that excellence grows when individuals build on what they naturally do well. He underlined that beyond technical capability, Goldman Sachs greatly values critical thinking, attention to detail, problem-solving ability, and a positive, collaborative mindset.

The Possibilities Summit was a great learning experience. Since I will be interning at Goldman Sachs, getting a glimpse of their work culture was especially valuable. My biggest takeaway was the importance of consensus-driven teamwork at the organisation, which means actively contributing rather than playing a silent role. Everyone is encouraged to share ideas, engage in discussions, and take collective responsibility for outcomes.

ECEMBER HIGHLIGHTS

Dear Readers,

As we come to the close of 2025, it has been a year marked by change and uncertainty across global economies, industries, and the evolving world of work. In this context, what stands out most clearly is how our students and alumni have continued to adapt, learn, and move forward with resilience and purpose. Their journeys this year have been a source of pride for all of us.

This year at the Career Development Center, we began several new initiatives designed to better reflect how careers are actually built today. What has been most heartening is not just the range of these efforts, but the way students stepped into them with intent—showing up consistently, asking thoughtful questions, building skills, and growing steadily through the process. Equally encouraging has been the support from our industry partners and alumni, who have walked alongside us— sharing insight, time, and trust. In a year where hiring landscapes shifted frequently, this sense of shared responsibility truly mattered.

No progress happens in isolation. It comes from staying the course, learning continuously, and choosing collaboration over certainty. As we look ahead to 2026, my hope is simple that we continue on this path together, with openness, commitment, and belief in the long-term journeys our students are on.

Our recently concluded Delhi-NCR Alumni

Meet was a clear reminder of this. I met each of the 75 alumni who attended, and seeing the work they are doing reaffirmed an important lesson: we must learn to operate in uncertainty by continuously upping our game. Each alumnus represents many others and their unique paths those working in some of the most premium organisations, many choosing smaller firms to work in niche and impactful areas, entrepreneurs, those between roles, PhD scholars, alumni returning after studying abroad, and others serving with distinction in our Armed Forces These varied journeys reminded us that things tend to fall into place when we remain focused on learning and growth. Sometimes that means upskilling or doing work that may not be immediately visible but creates lasting impact At other times, it means learning how to communicate better and build deeper connections, and occasionally, it simply means teaching AI to do the work while you sip your coffee

“ “

That enthusiasm to make thoughtful, timely career decisions has perhaps been the defining theme of 2025. We saw it not only among our university students but also among school students we engaged with during outreach visits. Starting early, we believe, is key, and it is a message we will continue to emphasise

What has been most heartening is not just the range of these efforts, but the way students stepped into them with intent—showing up consistently, asking thoughtful questions, building skills, and growing steadily through the process.

Going forward, we will build on this momentum as we look ahead to key engagements in the first quarter, including our Annual Internship Fair starting on February 13 and the Shiv Nadar UniversityAnnual Industry Partners Summit on February 27 in Delhi. Our intent for deeper engagement with industry goes well beyond placements, towards sustained dialogue, collaboration, and shared responsibility in shaping career pathways .

As we sign off on 2025, we do so with gratitude for the collective effort, lessons learned along the way, and renewed energy for the year ahead

At CDC, too, we made new strides this year, particularly in strengthening our career services offerings to make them more personalised, impactful, and accessible The steady stream of student queries and their enthusiasm kept us on our toes throughout the year.

Warm regards,

Wishing everyone a year ahead filled with learning, purpose, and steady momentum.

Our alumni, and their unique career journeys, diverse paths, and zeal for excellence, are a source of pride, a mark of assurance, and a quiet reminder that we are making a difference.

In Focus: Journeys of Growth

What kind of skills or qualities were the interviewers looking for?

The interviewers looked for clarity of thought, structured communication, and a strong grasp of fundamental concepts. They valued candidates who could break down problems logically, remain calm under pressure, and adapt to follow-up questions

What was your winning formula?

My winning formula was a combination of consistent preparation and strategic practice. I revised core concepts, strengthened my communication skills, and practiced mock interviews regularly. My internships and projects helped me answer application-based questions effectively, as I could connect theory with real scenarios.

How did CDC support you during your interview preparation?

CDC played a major role in strengthening my interview preparation The GD sessions helped me immensely by improving my ability to structure thoughts quickly and speak confidently in group settings The one-on-one sessions were especially valuable, providing personalised feedback that refined my answers and improved my presentation.

What’s one thing you wish you had known earlier while preparing for this interview?

I wish I had known earlier that structured thinking matters more than perfect answers. Interviewers focus heavily on how you approach a problem rather than just the final response. Preparing real-life examples for HR questions makes the interview smoother and less stressful.

In Focus: Journeys of Growth

What kind of skills or qualities were the interviewers looking for?

The interviewers sought candidates who demonstrated technical depth, analytical thinking, and a willingness to learn, rather than just memorised answers. They looked for a solid understanding of core computer science fundamentals, such as data structures, algorithms, and system concepts Practical knowledge gained through projects and the ability to discuss implementation details also mattered.

What was your winning formula?

I solved over 250 LeetCode problems and focused on deeply understanding time and space complexities. Building projects like the Tic Tac Toe Bot and the Delhi Metro Navigator helped me apply algorithms practically and confidently explain them during the interview. I also revised core computer science concepts such as SQL vs NoSQL, processes vs threads, and processor architectures. My ability to explain logic clearly and improve solutions step by step made an impact

How did CDC support you during your interview preparation?

CDC organised preparatory sessions that guided us on structuring introductions and presenting our resumes effectively. They provided insights into what interviewers expect, including a focus on strengths and relevant technical skills. Their guidance on resume building ensured that I highlighted impactful projects and key skills.

What’s one thing you wish you had known earlier while preparing for this interview?

I wish I had spent more time strengthening my core computer science fundamentals. While I was confident in problem-solving and project work, some basic concepts, such as operating systems and database differences, could have been sharper. A strong foundation makes it easier to answer conceptual questions and boosts confidence during discussions.

For those who missed the session, we bring you a detailed overview of the OCES and DGFS programs, their selection criteria, and the online examination through an interview with Dr. Mrityunjay Tyagi, Senior Scientist, BARC.

Q1. What is the OCES program at BARC, and what does training under OCES involve?

The OCES is BARC’s flagship training programme for candidates aspiring to join the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE). Candidates selected through OCES are designated as Trainee Scientific Officers (TSOs) and undergo one year of intensive, structured training. Successful completion of OCES makes candidates eligible for appointment as Scientific Officer “C” in various DAE units

Q2. Who is eligible to apply for OCES, and what academic backgrounds are accepted? OCES is open to engineering graduates and science postgraduates. For science postgraduates, candidates with M.Sc. or integrated M.Sc. degrees are eligible. Biosciences may include specialisations such as Life Sciences, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Biophysics, Agriculture, and Nutrition Geology has also been included in recent years.

Q3. What are the different entry routes into DAE through BARC?

There are two major pathways: OCES and the DAE Graduate Fellowship Scheme (DGFS). OCES directly admits engineering graduates and science postgraduates into the one-year training programme DGFS, on the other hand, allows selected engineering graduates to pursue an M.Tech degree at select IITs while being financially supported by DAE. After completing the M.Tech and meeting performance criteria, candidates are absorbed into DAE as Scientific Officers.

Q4. How does the selection process work?

The selection process generally follows a two-stage model. Candidates are first shortlisted through either a valid GATE score or an online screening examination conducted by BARC. Shortlisted candidates are then invited for technical interviews. Final selection is based on overall performance across screening and interviews

Q8. What are the long-term career prospects through BARC and DAE?

A career through OCES offers technical challenge, research-oriented work, job security, and publicservice prestige. Officers contribute to India’s strategic and scientific capabilities in nuclear energy and allied domains For students passionate about science, engineering, and nation-building, BARC and DAE offer one of the most respected and meaningful career paths in the country.

He emphasised that cybersecurity is not only about tools or technical solutions, but also about trust, accountability, and the responsibility of protecting people and systems, especially in the fintech sector. His perspective broadened our understanding of cybersecurity beyond a purely technical domain to one driven by purpose and impact

The panel discussion that followed was particularly engaging, as industry professionals shared their experiences working in the field. Beyond discussing industry challenges and emerging cyber threats, the panellists spoke candidly about their career journeys, learning curves, and professional growth.

Another enriching aspect of the visit was the project presentations by students from different colleges. These presentations showcased how cybersecurity concepts are being applied to address real-life problems, while the feedback from the panel offered valuable, practical direction and encouragement.

ReunionReunion A L U M N I

14 December 2025

On December 14, alumni from across the city came together for an evening of conversations, shared memories, and new connections. Attended by over 70 alumni, the gathering, filled with familiar faces, buzzed with lively chatter, food and drinks, and the inevitable, “Where are you now?” The meet created space for unhurried conversations, meaningful exchanges, and celebrated the enduring connections that define the Shiv Nadar University alumni community.

The meet was graced by Vice-Chancellor Professor Ananya Mukherjee, who engaged with alumni and learned about the diverse paths they have taken since graduation. She encouraged them to share their stories on University platforms and inspire others through the meaningful work they are doing. “It’s heartwarming to hear so many conversations around the exciting careers our alumni are building. From alumni setting up startups to computer engineers branching into fashion textile design, the range of paths they are taking is truly impressive. This is what our University stands for,” said Professor Ananya Mukherjee

Some of the deans and faculty members who joined the reunion included: Dr Sanjeev Galande, Dean, School of Natural Sciences; Professor Partha Chatterjee, Dean of Academics; Professor Rajesh Chakrabarti, Dean, School of Management and Entrepreneurship; Dr Rajeev Kumar Singh, Dean, School of Engineering; Professor Paromita Goswami, School of Management and Entrepreneurship; Dr N. T. Sudarshan Naidu, School of Management and Entrepreneurship; and Dr Richa Priyadarshini, Department of Life Sciences, School of Natural Sciences.

“It’s so heartwarming to see our alumni making the effort to attend the meet with their spouses and children It was especially lovely meeting the kids I reconnected with students from our first and third batches, and it truly warmed my heart to learn about the work they have been doing,” said Professor Paromita Goswami.

Aadya Prasad, currently an Associate Professor at GD Goenka University, fondly recalled her time at the University “If it were not for Shiv Nadar University, I would probably have chosen a very different career. The way we were taught evoked in us a deep love for literature and, without realising it at the time, also taught me how to teach,” she said. Meeting the faculty and ourVice-Chancellor made the effort worthwhile,” he shared.

Stories like Aadya’s and Tumul’s, and those of many other alumni with diverse careers, are a reminder of the enduring impact of the University’s approach to learning, one that continues to shape lives well beyond the campus.

The evening drew to a close over a shared meal and lively conversations The reunion added a fresh layer of memories to those already cherished, leaving everyone reminiscing about the best of times.

ALUMNI TALK SERIES

EXPLORING CAREERS IN DIGITAL WRITING, UX, AND TECHNICAL CONTENT

The Alumni Relations Office hosted an insightful session by Shubhangi Verma, B.A. (Research) in English, Class of 2019, who is currently a Senior Content Specialist at Melbourne-based marketing agency Pixelstorm. The session, titled “Exploring Careers in Digital Writing, UX, and Technical Content,” offered students a deep dive into the dynamic world of digital communication.

Shubhangi walked students through the roles of copywriters, SEO writers, technical writers, and UX writers, explaining how each differs in responsibilities and skill requirements. Using real-world examples, she highlighted which roles align best with different strengths and interests.

Her clarity on these career paths, coupled with practical tips for building a successful career, was the biggest takeaway for students. She also shared her journey to the University of Melbourne, where she pursued a Master’s in Global Media Communication.

Shubhangi reflected on how the degree helped her professionally, while emphasizing that short-term industry upskilling courses can be equally valuable for those who have a clear career direction since pursuing a master’s abroad is no small task Additionally, she recommended short courses and tools that aspiring digital writers can use to prepare for the future.

Shubhangi’s Top Career Tips

For UX writing, consider a minor in design as visual thinking is essential Starting your career at a marketing agency can be a smart move. It exposes you to diverse clients and audiences, unlike an in-house role where you write for just one industry.

Experiment with SEO writing early on it improves speed, though it’s not a long-term path If internships are hard to find, work on campus projects to gain practical experience. Technical writing pays well, but it can be monotonous. Choose it only if your personality and interests align with structured, detail-oriented work.

On 17 December, our alumni Praneet Dhingra (B.Tech., Electronics and Communication Engineering, Class of 2017), Data Scientist II at Kitman Labs, and Laavanya Sundeep (B.Sc. Research, Mathematics, Class of 2015), Senior Data Scientist at Commonwealth Bank, led an insightful session on handling interviews

Rather than offering generic tips, both the sessions focused on the small but crucial details being confident about what’s on your CV, explaining ideas clearly, managing interview nerves, understanding company culture, and preparing for real-world expectations. What stood out most was the openness and relatability of the discussions, giving students practical guidance and confidence in navigating interviews and career planning.

Key Takeaways

CDC SNU SHIVNADARUNIV_ALUMNI RELATIONS

Progress is always a shared effort.

Dear Readers,

When you think about it, is there anything that truly flourishes without teamwork? A child taking their first steps, a home being built, a musical concert, a scientific breakthrough, even a festival celebrated with joy each comes alive because many hands, minds, and hearts come together. Cities function because countless unseen people coordinate every hour to make life move smoothly. From the earliest moments of our lives to the roles we take on as adults, nothing meaningful thrives in isolation. The world itself is built on collaboration.

With this thought in mind, I look back at November a month that reminded us how powerful collective effort can be

While the placement season continued with its usual momentum, much more was happening across Career Services. In our commitment to building a culture of continuous career preparation and make our students career ready, we are making career advising easier for students to access. Career advisors are now available throughout the week, and students can walk into the CDC Bay anytime for resume reviews, interview preparation, GD practice, LinkedIn support, or simply to seek clarity on their next step.

We also deepened our engagement with alumni an important pillar of our ecosystem. Our upcoming alumni mentorship initiative will connect students with experienced graduates who can help them understand career pathways, industry expectations, and emerging opportunities in a rapidly evolving job market Their lived experiences will add invaluable perspectives to our students’ preparation.

Our commitment to hands-on learning continued through industry visits to Delhi Metro Rail Corporation and STMicroelectronics, giving students firsthand exposure to real-world environments, technologies, and challenges. These experiences bridge the gap between classroom knowledge and industry expectations, making our students far more confident and informed.

Nothing meaningful thrives in isolation.

On the placements front, November was an encouraging month. We successfully ran 20 recruitment processes, with notable traction in the core engineering sector. Organizations such as Escorts Kubota, Ericsson R&D India, and ISGEC Heavy Engineering hired our students for highly motivated roles including Software Developer, GET – Customer Satisfaction, and Engineer Trainee

We also welcomed new partners into our placement ecosystem UKG, CloudKeeper, and Josh Technology Group each offering specialised and selective roles This reflects not just industry confidence in our students, but also the strength of our academic and advising ecosystem.

A special congratulations to the students who made the University proud by winning competitions organised by Mercer and Hewlett Packard Enterprise. Their achievements, and the dedication of the advisors who guided them, are wonderful examples of what teamwork, preparation, and perseverance can accomplish.

As you read through this newsletter, I hope you see what I see every day a community that grows stronger together. Students pushing themselves, faculty and advisors supporting them, alumni giving back, and industry partners believing in our potential. It is this spirit of collaboration that keeps us moving forward and prepares our students for the world that awaits them.

Arham Jain has made remarkable strides in his tech journey this year. In January 2025, Arham participated in the Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) Think-A-Thon, a 90-minute, pan-India challenge designed to test students’ programming skills and their awareness of HPE technologies.

Arham emerged as the first prize winner, standing out not just for his technical skills but also for his clarity of thought and problem-solving approach “Unlike hackathons, which stretch over a period of time, Think-A-Thon tested us on speed, accuracy, and conceptual understanding,” Arham shared.

Following his win, Arham was selected for HPE’s Career Preview Program (CPP) a six-month remote research internship offered to a select group of Computer Science and Engineering and Electrical and Computer Engineering students who qualified through a written exam.

Arham’s team, consisting of four students, worked on a real-world problem statement under the guidance of mentors from both Shiv Nadar University and HPE "The internship gave us a glimpse into how the corporate world works Our meetings were formal, with mentors regularly checking in on our progress and approach. And since it lasted six months, staying consistent and focused was key," says Arham.

After completing the internship and submitting their project, Arham and his team were invited to appear for interviews in August. Arham was subsequently offered a role as a Software Development Engineer at HPE Bangalore, marking a significant milestone in his career.

We asked Arham what he believed contributed to his consistent success, from the Think-A-Thon to the CPP and ultimately landing a role at HPE “Practice DSA every day Only then will it truly be at your fingertips. You can't rush through it or expect to master it in a week before the interview. My approach was simple: solve one or two problems daily. Also, stay updated with emerging technologies,” says Arham.

We received tremendous support from the CDC, right from the Think-A-Thon all the way through to the final interviews. Their guidance was especially valuable during the internship phase, when a few students began to lose motivation and struggled to stay engaged. Thanks to the encouragement and support from Ravinder Sir, those students were able to regain focus and successfully complete their internships.

From Design Engineer to Forecasting Analyst: Shivam Bist’s Bold Career Pivot

When Shivam Bist, a final-year M.Sc. Economics student at Shiv Nadar University, walked out of his final interview round with WNS Consulting, he knew the effort had paid off. He has secured a role as a Forecasting Analyst, a position that perfectly blends his love for data, statistics, and problem-solving. But Shivam’s journey to this point was anything but conventional

After completing Mechanical Engineering from DIT University, Dehradun, in 2017, Shivam began his career as a design engineer. “After working for a year or two, I realised I wanted to do something different, something that involved finance, statistics, and economics,” he recalls. Friends advised him to take a short course or switch jobs, but Shivam had other plans. “I didn’t want to regret not trying. I was confident in my programming and quantitative skills, so I decided to go for a master’s degree.”

That decision led him to Shiv Nadar University. In his first semester, Shivam worked as a Research Assistant under Dr. Arka Roy Chaudhuri, diving into Python programming and data scraping tasks Later, during his internship at the Indian School of Business (ISB) Hyderabad, he worked on the Telangana Rising 2047 Vision Policy document as part of the National Viksit Bharat agenda.

These experiences became the highlight of Shivam’s resume. “The first five or six questions in my WNS interview were about my Python projects and data work. They were curious about how complex the projects were and how I applied concepts practically,” says Shivam.

Shivam adds, “The interview wasn’t just about theory; it tested real-world application They asked scenario-based questions like how to model crude oil prices or explain the impact of U.S. interest rate hikes on Indian companies in layman's terms. So being updated on global trends and connecting them to economic concepts is crucial,”

Shivam Bist

M.Sc. in Economics

Class of 2026

Thank you, CDC, for helping me prepare for GDs. While I was confident in other areas, public speaking was never my strength. The mock GDs pointed out the mistakes I was making, which helped me work on those areas and improve, something that proved invaluable during my WNS interview. The workshop on practicing guesstimates and case studies also helped immensely in sharpening my problem-solving skills.

Shiv Nadar University Students Win Mercer’s FinQuest with Future-Ready AI Solution

As part of the Career Development Center’s ongoing efforts to bring competitive opportunities to campus, Shiv Nadar University students stood out for their bold vision and practical approach at FinQuest 2025, a case study competition organised by Mercer as part of the Mercer Summit 2025. Inside Fidelity: Siddarth Koul on AI, Skills, and Building Careers in Finance

In the middle of the placement frenzy, we grabbed a moment with Siddarth Koul, Early Careers Recruiting Lead for India and APAC at Fidelity International. With over ten years of experience across industries like IT, healthcare, and banking, Siddarth’s seen it all when it comes to launching careers. In this candid chat, he breaks down what Fidelity really looks for in fresh grads, the skills reshaping the future of work, and the common blind spots students can fix to stand out in the real world.

How is Fidelity integrating AI and data analytics into its business operations, and what kinds of roles are emerging as a result?

At Fidelity, while we don’t yet have roles that specifically seek 'AI experts,' we look for what we call an AI-enabled mindset. As long as professionals remain open to learning, stay curious about technology, and can connect insights to business outcomes, they will continue to be at the heart of everything we do

What skills or competencies do you think students should focus on to stay relevant in an AI-driven financial landscape?

More than just skills, I think values and behaviors are equally important to stay relevant in an AI-driven financial landscape. AI brings incredible opportunities but also real risks, especially around data security. Students must develop a strong sense of responsibility and integrity in how they use AI tools. Awareness of what can and cannot be shared is critical.

How can students from non-finance backgrounds build a career in finance or investment management?

“ ”

At Fidelity, while we don’t yet have roles that specifically seek 'AI experts,' we look for what we call an AI-enabled mindset.

Coming from a non-financial background, I understand that it’s not easy to break into the finance domain. But the key lies in upskilling. You need to take the initiative to learn, whether through certifications, short courses, or self-study, and build a strong foundation in finance concepts. It’s also important to understand how the industry operates. Once you start learning the fundamentals, it becomes easier to connect your existing skills to the finance domain and build a meaningful career

What are the top qualities or skills Fidelity looks for in candidates for early careers roles?

We place strong emphasis on values and behaviors. Integrity and trust are fundamental, and we look for individuals who demonstrate qualities such as being bold, curious, and compassionate. Alongside values, there are a few essential skills that every professional, regardless of their domain, should possess. Two of the most important are data literacy and AI literacy. Equally important are strong fundamentals. For instance, an engineer cannot become a good AI engineer without understanding data structures.

What learning gaps do you often notice in students during interviews?

When it comes to learning gaps, the biggest one I see in fresh graduates is the lack of hands-on experience Students often have strong theoretical knowledge but don’t always know how to apply it in real situations.

Whatkindofcareeropportunitiesare openingupwithinFidelityInternational foryoungprofessionals?

At Fidelity, young professionals can explore diverse roles across several high-impact domains:

Investment Fund Analysis

Analysts in this function study how global political, economic, and social developments affect investments. They track external events, assess financial impact, and translate complex market movements into clear, actionable insights.

Financial Reporting

With millions of customers and billions in assets under management, Fidelity’s reporting teams play a vital role in tracking transactions and investment outcomes. They create tailored reports that help clients understand performance, returns, and market trends, serving as both updates and analytical tools.

Corporate Finance

This function focuses on internal financial management, including profit and loss tracking, ledger reporting, budgeting, and forecasting. It’s essential for maintaining financial health and strategic planning.

Risk Management

A fast-growing specialisation, risk management teams use mathematical models and statistical tools to evaluate potential risks in portfolios and operations. These roles often require a blend of financial acumen and technical skills, especially in quantitative analysis and predictive modeling.

Careers in Heavy Industry: Insights from ISGEC

ISGEC Heavy Engineering Ltd., a prominent player in the core engineering sector, recently visited our campus for placements We had the privilege of speaking with the company ’ s Deputy General Manager – Materials, Ajay Gupta, to explore the dynamics of the heavy engineering industry and understand its evolving expectations from graduates

How is the heavy engineering industry evolving, and what competencies are sought in today’s graduates?

The fundamentals haven’t changed; sound knowledge of core concepts remains essential. What’s encouraging is that students today have better resources and faculty support, which reflects in their preparedness. However, we notice that some candidates struggle to explain certain concepts during interviews. We don’t judge them solely on that; instead, we ask how they applied those concepts in projects or internships, which they are usually able to explain better. Beyond technical skills, communication is key, especially for roles involving client interaction or sales

What advice would you give to graduates preparing for placements?

Engage deeply with your projects and internships; they are your biggest differentiators.

Apart from strong technical skills, do your homework about the organisation. Understand its core business areas and current focus, such as green energy initiatives. When students don’t ask questions about our work or show awareness about us, they miss an opportunity to make a strong impression.

What common gaps do you see in fresh graduates, and how can they improve?

Two areas stand out. First, students often fumble with basic questions that every interviewer expects them to answer confidently. Second, many students struggle to explain the work they did in their projects or internships even though that’s one of their best opportunities to demonstrate hands-on learning.

How can students make themselves industry-ready?

Stay updated on industry trends and emerging technologies. Work on communication skills, they matter more than students realise. Engage deeply with your projects and internships; they are your biggest differentiators And finally, approach interviews with confidence and curiosity.

INDUSTRY VISITS

IndustryVisits feature visits organised by the Career Development Center to give our students an understanding of the real-world application of what they learn in classrooms. Students gain exposure to actual work environments, which deepen their knowledge of industry trends, best practices, and realworld challenges. Interactions with professionals not only develop an understanding of key concepts but also offer insights into their personal journeys and career trajectories.

Each visit reflects CDC’s commitment to expanding hands-on learning, building employability, and preparing students to become future-ready professionals.

In November, CDC organised an industry visit for Mechanical and Civil Engineering students to the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC). The visit, led by seasoned engineers at DMRC, offered an in-depth look into metro infrastructure and operations, sharing practical insights on the design and maintenance of metro systems.

Students explored the complexities of tunneling mechanisms and learned about the engineering challenges involved, along with innovative solutions applied in real-world projects

A highlight of the visit was an inspiring interaction with Ms. Annie Sinha Roy, India’s first woman tunneling engineer. She spoke about her professional journey and provided a detailed understanding of tunnel construction techniques, blending technical expertise with personal experience.

This hands-on exposure gave students a unique opportunity to connect classroom concepts with cutting-edge infrastructure technology, reinforcing the relevance of mechanical engineering principles in modern urban transport systems.

B.Tech. in Mechanical Engineering Class of 2028

It was an incredibly informative and valuable learning experience. I gained insights into sustainable practices such as waste management, material reuse, and energy-saving techniques being implemented on-site.

The supervisors were generous with their time and shared information in an understandable way, which helped me understand how a real construction site operates.

As a budding civil engineer, this visit bridged the gap between classroom concepts and practical application I also learned about the Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM), its working principles, and the challenges DMRC faces due to minor vibrations.

Meeting India’s first woman tunnel engineer was an inspiring and unforgettable experience. Listening to her experiences and the difficulties she overcame was truly inspiring and motivating. This visit also supported my report on “Sustainable Methods Practiced in Construction Sites.”

Exploring Cutting-Edge Electronic Solutions at STMicroelectronics

In an industry visit to STMicroelectronics, final-year Electrical and Computer Engineering students gained valuable exposure to core electronic components, especially devices like MOSFETs, microcontrollers, sensors, and embedded processors, which are used in today’s technology.

The students got an opportunity to see STM’s in-house microprocessors and development boards, offering insights into how semiconductor companies design and innovate new electronic solutions.

A major highlight of the session was the evolution of electronics in the automotive and EV industry Students compared older cars from the 1990s, which had very few electronic components, to today’s vehicles that rely heavily on embedded systems, power electronics, sensors, IoT connectivity, and advanced driver-assist systems (ADAS). This demonstrated why modern vehicles depend so much on chips whether for battery management, motor control, infotainment, safety, or efficiency.

The visit showcased how electronics now play a central role in consumer devices, industrial automation, smart homes, EVs, and emerging technologies

Thank you, CDC, for organising a visit to STMicroelectronics, Noida. It was an immensely valuable learning experience, where we interacted with industry professionals who work at the forefront of semiconductor technology. We gained insights into the electronics industry, learned how modern chips are designed and manufactured, and understood the growing scope of embedded systems and semiconductor innovation. The visit helped us build meaningful professional connections and broaden our understanding of real-world electronics.

Ivan Paul Verghese on Writing, Discipline, and Media

First-year B.A. (Research) English students had an engaging interaction with alumnus Ivan Paul Verghese, a Class of 2020 graduate in B.A. (Research) English. During the hour-long session, Ivan shared his experiences working at Scriptwallah, where he experimented with various forms of writing, from copywriting and SEO writing to speeches and scripts.

Ivan also spoke about pursuing a master’s degree in Mass Communication (Audio Visual) from the Symbiosis Institute of Media and Communication (SIMC), Pune; the importance of discipline in a writing career; his mentors; overcoming writer’s block; and his startup, Reelies, which creates short video content

Reflecting on the realities of a writing career, Ivan remarked, “We all have this idea that when you have a writing job, you get this nice quiet room with a beautiful view, but in reality, there's chaos all around, and you have to figure out how to get into your own head and write what needs to be written. And if you’re lucky, you'll have people who guide you and help you through the process.”

Ivan patiently answered students’ questions on topics such as his writing process, the struggles of a budding writer, internships, choosing a subject for a master’s program, and more. Since it hasn’t been long since Ivan graduated from Shiv Nadar University, he spoke with the relatable voice of a senior, making it easy for students to connect and learn from his experiences.

Career Guidance

Crafting a Strong First Impression

MBA students worked closely with career advisors to refine their elevator pitches through an engaging and insightful activity They began by learning the essentials of an effective elevator pitch, drafting their own versions, and then recording them on video. This exercise helped them review their delivery and identify moments of hesitation or dead space where they used filler words such as “umm,” “you know,” “ah,” “so,” or “actually.”

The activity encouraged them to work on essential elements such as voice modulation, eye contact, audience engagement, and structuring their message with impact. These recordings were submitted for review, enabling students to receive guided feedback and reflect more deeply on their areas of improvement.

Furthermore, reviewing their own recordings enabled them to reflect on areas of improvement and build greater self-awareness skills that will support them throughout interviews, networking interactions, and workplace communication.

BRINGING CAREER ADVISING CLOSER TO STUDENTS

To make career guidance more accessible and better aligned with the busy academic schedules of students, CDC started a new initiative in the third week of November. In its very first week, we saw a great participation from students who reached out for support across a range of areas: resume reviews, group discussion practice, skill building, understanding potential careers aligned with their majors, and gaining clarity on the roles typically associated with their domains.

To keep things simple and student-friendly, the CDC Walk-in Hours now follow a flexible format that ensures advisor availability while fitting seamlessly into a student’s day Whether you prefer booking a slot in advance or simply walking in between classes, support is always close at hand

Team Mosaic Wins Runners-up Position at IBM’s Prarambh 2025 Hack Challenge

Led by Venkat Ravi K B, a final-year Computer Science and Engineering student, Team MOSAIC emerged as runners-up at Prarambh 2025, a GenAI hack challenge organised by IBM in partnership with AKTU and the Government of Uttar Pradesh.

It was a moment of pride for Shiv Nadar University, Delhi-NCR, as Team Mosaic, a group of budding engineers, clinched the second position at Prarambh 2025, a ‘hack challenge’ organised by IBM in partnership with Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Technical University (AKTU) and the Government of Uttar Pradesh.

Bringing together some of the sharpest minds from across the state of Uttar Pradesh, the hackathon challenged students from Engineering, MCA, BCA, BSc-IT, and MSc-IT programs to design GenAI-driven solutions contributing to the ambitious ‘AI City in Lucknow’ initiative. Amidst hundreds of teams, Mosaic’s innovation shone through — a selflearning algorithm that evolves and improves with every interaction, setting their solution apart for its originality and impact.

B.Tech. in Computer Science and Engineering Class of 2026

The two-month hackathon was both intense and inspiring. I’m grateful to the CDC for connecting us with IBM after the event and giving us the opportunity to interview for placements there.

Out of the five problem statements, Team Mosaic, led byVenkat Ravi K B, a final-year Computer Science and Engineering student, along with two of his batchmates and a third-year student, chose to work on “AIPowered Citizen Grievance Redressal System,” a use case designed to improve the efficiency of the UP CM Helpline 1076, a platform that receives thousands of complaints daily from citizens on issues ranging from public services to administrative concerns. Their goal was to develop an AI-driven system capable of automating and optimising the grievance-handling process using sentiment analysis to classify, categorise, and prioritise complaints based on urgency and emotional tone.

Team Mosaic’s innovation lay in their self-learning algorithm designed for continuous improvement. “Our selling point was that the algorithm would always maintain itself at its best. The longer it’s used, the better it gets,” shared Venkat. “It learns over time, collecting data and improving with every user interaction.”

Following their success, all team members were interviewed by IBM, and Venkat was selected for a Software Development role at IBM Lucknow. When asked what approach helped in developing the solution, he said, “The challenge was to stand out, to come up with a strategy that differentiates your product from everyone else. It’s a hit-or-miss situation, so you give it your best shot.”

When asked what advice he would give to those who aspire to follow a similar path, Venkat shared, “There’s a lot of noise about what to learn or what to add to your resume. But I believe it’s about picking something you truly enjoy, something you are really good at. That’s the best plan of action anyone can have in tech right now.”

What are some common gaps you notice in fresh graduates when they step into their first jobs?

From a skills perspective, there’s little to no gap today. Education standards have improved, and students have easy access to resources to build their abilities. The real gaps lie in adaptability and mindset. Many fresh graduates struggle to adjust to new situations, organisational norms and professional expectations. Understanding and respecting the culture of an organisation, while balancing your own needs, is a common challenge. Ultimately, it’s not about technical ability; it’s about attitude, awareness, and the ability to navigate professional norms gracefully.

You have met students across universities. What qualities do you see in the most promising young talent?

Those who truly make a difference and achieve what they aspire to are usually the ones who are disciplined and consistent over the long term. They have a clear sense of purpose and pursue it steadily. They don’t rely on miracles; they understand that what truly matters is the process and following it diligently. As Dhoni often says, ‘Follow the process; success is a byproduct of it.’

Having engaged closely with this young talent across campuses, what do you think people often get wrong about Gen Z?

I think we need to realise that Gen Z has had a very different sort of upbringing. What they experienced in their teens or adolescence is what many of us faced only in our late twenties or thirties. They went through COVID, a difficult phase for everyone, at an age when they didn’t yet have the maturity to handle such challenges. Many of them faced personal losses, and everyone carries a story we may not know. That’s why I believe Gen Z deserves a longer run; they are clearly talented and have immense potential. What I admire most about them is their ability to say “no” openly, something our generation often struggled to do, as we were taught to say “yes” to everything and everyone around us.

What’s one piece of advice you wish every graduate would take to heart before stepping into the professional world?

The more you learn, the better you become. Don’t be satisfied with surface-level knowledge; cultivate a curious mindset. Try to understand why something works the way it does, and why it can’t work any other way. That’s how you truly build expertise. Be open to stepping out of your comfort zone. Don’t stay content just because things are coming easily to you. Always ask yourself what you are contributing, not just what you already are. The constant urge to challenge yourself and the willingness to move beyond comfort those, to me, are the two most important qualities you can carry forward.

Those who truly make a difference and achieve what they aspire to are usually the ones who are disciplined and consistent over the long term. They have a clear sense of purpose and pursue it steadily. They don’t rely on miracles; they understand that what truly matters is the process and following it diligently.

Real-world wisdom to help students prepare, perform, and progress

Ask the Expert Substance and Presence: The Consulting Edge

Amid the whirlwind of a bustling recruitment process on campus, we caught up with Kunal Choudhury, who leads People & Talent at Alvarez & Marsal’s Global Capability Center in Gurgaon A strategic HR and talent leader with over 15 years of experience spanning global consulting, research, and technology firms, Kunal brings a wealth of expertise to the table. In this Q&A, Kunal shares his deep insights into the world of consulting, the skills and capabilities that drive success, and what it truly takes to thrive in this fast-paced, ever-evolving field.

What skills do you look for in fresh graduates applying for consulting roles at Alvarez & Marsal?

At A&M, we look for three core capabilities in fresh graduates applying for consulting roles. First and foremost is structured problem-solving Our work is fundamentally about helping clients navigate complexity, so the ability to break down challenges analytically and propose pragmatic solutions is nonnegotiable.

Second is resilience and adaptability. Consulting is fast-paced by nature, it demands individuals who can perform under pressure and adjust quickly to evolving client needs and dynamic business environments. Third, and often underestimated, is communication specifically, the ability to craft and deliver a compelling narrative. Whether through a PowerPoint presentation or in a client meeting, strong storytelling skills are critical to driving impact. These capabilities form the foundation not only for success in consulting but also for leadership in any business context.

What do you look for in a student’s resume when assessing them for consulting roles?

When evaluating student resumes for consulting roles at A&M, I look beyond academic performance alone. Consulting is a multidimensional profession, and we’re looking for well-rounded individuals who can bring both intellectual rigor and real-world agility Academic consistency is important, it signals discipline and a strong foundation. But equally critical is evidence of initiative beyond the classroom. Whether it’s leading a student organisation, participating in case competitions, contributing to research, or being actively involved in extracurricular pursuits, these experiences speak to leadership potential, collaboration, and the ability to navigate ambiguity. Ultimately, we’re looking for individuals who have demonstrated not just capability but character, those who are curious, proactive, and ready to take ownership in high-stakes environments.

What kind of internship or project experiences add value for roles at Alvarez & Marsal?

At Alvarez & Marsal, we value internship or project experiences that demonstrate analytical thinking, problem-solving, and real-world impact. Experiences in strategy, finance, operations, or turnaround environments are particularly relevant, whether through internships with consulting firms, corporate strategy teams, investment banking, or startups. We also value roles where candidates have worked on crossfunctional teams, navigated ambiguity, or led initiatives end-to-end. Even academic projects or case competitions that simulate business problem-solving can be powerful. Ultimately, we look for candidates who have taken ownership, shown resilience, and delivered outcomes for business.

What do you suggest students practice to prepare for consulting interviews?

Preparing for a consulting interview requires more than just rehearsing frameworks; it demands a well-rounded, thoughtful approach. First, students should develop a strong grasp of structured problem-solving. Practice case interviews extensively, but focus on clarity of thought, logic, and the ability to adapt your approach based on new information. Second, communication is key; learn to articulate your thinking concisely and confidently Equally important is commercial awareness; stay informed about global business trends and understand how companies create and protect value. Lastly, reflect on your own experiences, from academics to extracurriculars, and be ready to draw leadership and teamwork lessons from them.

Every interaction, your resume, your first handshake, your participation in a case, sends a signal. In this profession, polish and preparation are not optional; they are expected. Show us not only that you are capable of doing the job, but that you are already beginning to think, act, and lead like a consultant.

What’s one piece of advice you would give students who aspire to start their career in consulting?

Consulting is as much about substance as it is about presence. My advice to aspiring consultants is to focus on cultivating both On the one hand, you need to demonstrate intellectual rigor, strong academics, problem-solving mindset, and clarity of thought. On the other hand, equally important is how you present yourself. That means developing executive presence, not just in how you dress, but in how you communicate and engage with others. Every interaction, your resume, your first handshake, your participation in a case, sends a signal. In this profession, polish and preparation are not optional; they are expected Show us not only that you are capable of doing the job, but that you are already beginning to think, act, and lead like a consultant.

Career Readiness Workshop

A focused workshop was conducted for the Class of 2029 to enhance awareness around LinkedIn as a strategic career platform and to introduce the use of the Career Navigator Tool for self-monitoring and planning future pathways.

The workshop began with the focus on alignment with the Career Navigator framework and emphasised the importance of maintaining a profile dossier, which is a dynamic record of academic, professional, and personal growth. This approach encourages students to reflect on their evolving goals and track progress toward meaningful outcomes.

Later, an interactive session on ‘Life on LinkedIn’ followed, offering insights into the platform’s role in personal branding, professional networking, and career development Students were guided through key features and best practices to help them build a compelling and purposeful online presence.

A graduation roadmap was also presented, outlining multiple post-major trajectories including higher education, industry roles, and entrepreneurial ventures. The objective was to foster informed decision-making and proactive career planning.

It was truly energising to witness the engagement and curiosity of the Class of 2029.

From preparation to placement, in their own words

What was the key to landing a role at Silicon Labs?

Consistently paying attention in class and building a strong foundation in core concepts was key Having a topic-wise roadmap from professors, with support from Career Development Center, helped me prepare effectively for interviews

What’s one thing from your interview that stood out to you?

Which skills or experiences helped most?

Hands-on lab work and professors who brought real-world industry insights into the classroom were invaluable Project-based learning, choosing industry-relevant electives, and practicing DSA problems outside of class made a big difference. Being active in clubs and taking on leadership roles helped me improve communication skills, speak with purpose, and gain confidence.

HOW I MADE IT

From preparation to placement, in their own words

What was the key to landing a role at Fidelity International?

The key was preparation and mindset. I focused on building a strong foundation in finance concepts while also being ready to demonstrate structured thinking and curiosity during the interviews. Showing that I was eager to learn mattered as much as technical ability.

What was the most important skill for this role?

At the entry level, it was the ability to think analytically and communicate insights clearly The role required breaking down basic financial concepts and presenting them in a way that added value to clients and stakeholders.

What’s one thing from your interview that stood out to you?

What stood out to me was how much importance the interviewers placed on adaptability and attitude. They wanted to see if I could adjust quickly, communicate effectively, and bring energy to the team, rather than just checking if I had memorised the technicals.

Which skills or experiences helped most?

For an entry-level investment analyst intern role, the combination of analytical skills, financial knowledge, and communication made the biggest impact Prior exposure to corporate finance and portfolio management during my coursework gave me the technical base, while practice in explaining ideas clearly helped me stand out

The Career Development Center was extremely helpful. The sessions they organised with alumni and industry leaders gave me practical insights into how the industry works and what recruiters look for. Those interactions sharpened both my preparation and confidence.

What’s one thing you wish you had known earlier?

I wish I had known that recruiters value structured thinking and curiosity just as much as technical answers. You don’t need to be perfect, you need to show how you approach problems and your willingness to grow.

Any advice for fellow students aiming for similar roles?

Start early with your preparation, but don’t just memoris Focus on developing problem-solving skills and keep markets. In interviews, your ability to structure answe genuine interest in the role often matters more than “perfect” technical response.
