LEATHERCARE ADVICE

BEFORE USE

All leather items must be treated before use. Apply a light coat of Neatsfoot Oil with a brush or sponge. Leave to dry. Repeat 2-3 times until the leather feels soft & supple.

MAINTENANCE

Treat your leather products as you would your own skin. Keep it clean and moisturised. Wipe off any build up of dirt & sweat then condition with saddle soap. Allow to dry naturally at room temperature. Apply a light coat of Neatsfoot Oil periodically.

GENERAL ADVICE

Leather must always be left to dry naturally at room temperature. Regularly check leather and stitching for signs of stress and replace if necessary. Do not use excessive amounts of oil - this can be as damaging as using none at all.

Bits & Bitting

Bit of an issue? a Bit of Help…

Bitting can be a confusing and bemusing subject and opinions and ideas will always vary. The bit and bridle are tools used by the rider to communicate with the horse.

A clear understanding of the bitting pressure points, how the different families of bitting use these, and the resulting reaction by the horse can greatly benefit the rider. However, it is the signals the rider gives the horse through the reins that will ultimately define how strong or severe a bit is, not just it’s design.

If in doubt, it is recommended the rider seek the advice of their instructor when looking for the most suitable bit for themselves and their horse.

Mouthpieces

The most popular group of bits, they have no curb chain, pulley or leverage action. Can be mild, but if the mouthpiece is very thin, has an uneven surface, or is twisted this can increase the severity. Select the most appropriate mouthpiece for your horse’s mouth conformation.

This has two bits - Snaffle (Bradoon) and a Curb (Weymouth) which is used with a curb chain and lip strap. Horse and rider must be ready and at the correct level of training for this combination - it is not just for smart turnout.

Aims to combine the actions associated with a double bridle but in one bit. The two points of attachment for the two sets of reins allow definition between the action of the upper (Snaffle) and lower (Curb) rein. Can be used with roundings and one set of reins for a more general action. Useful for a horse that does not have space for two bits e.g. a Show Cob.

These look like Snaffles but holes in the bit’s outer sections allow special bridle cheek pieces to run through the bit, the lower rings of which the reins are attached. A useful bit for a strong horse that goes with its head too low. Often seen on horses in fast work such as polo, cross country and hunting.

Commonly refered to as a ‘gag’ or elevator. These bits have a point of rein attachment that is below the mouthpiece, creating a leverage action. Some have ring sides while others have long shanks but they do not have a curb chain. Two sets of reins provide a choice of action. Bits such as Wilkie, Bevel, American ‘Gag’ and multi-ringed bits.

Not technically a bit as there is no mouthpiece, but this does not mean that this is a mild option. Particular care should be taken in the fitting and use, and plenty of time should be taken in the familiarisation of both horse and rider.

Useful for a horse with a damaged or sensitive mouth.

Generally, a thin or uneven mouthpiece is stronger than a broad larger or smoother one. Finding a bit that is best suited to your horse’s individual mouth shape is the linchpin to successful bitting. Some horses with a ‘full’ mouth may be more comfortably bitted with a finer mouthpiece.

A single, central joint gives a squeezing action to the tongue and bars, double joints (plate and lozenge) disperse the contact across the mouth to lighten the pressure applied to the edge of the tongue, but be aware

tHe families of Bitting

There are many different designs of bit but they can almost all be placed into one of six families of bitting, each defined by how the mechanics (action) of the bit works, the pressure points that it uses and the probable reaction of the horse. In this way a logical process can be followed when selecting a bit for your horse.

Remember that your horse’s conformation, age, stage of training, work, stable management and your ability as a rider are all contributing factors to correct bit selection.

Bradoon acts as a Snaffle. The Weymouth encourages the horse to lower and flex his head and neck, encouraging a more advanced head carriage and an increased level of communication and control.

A small amount of lifting action as the contact is initially taken up is quickly replaced by downwards action on the poll, lips, bars and tongue.

The ‘running’ section of the bridle’s cheek pieces act in a strong upwards direction to lift the head. Can be used with two sets of reins to provide a milder to strong action. For use by experienced riders in fast work.

The rein being attached below the mouthpiece results in the bit rotating when a contact is taken up. Pressure is applied through the bridle to the poll and mouth with a downwards action, encouraging the horse to lower its head and neck.

A curved mouthpiece allows more room for the tongue in the same way that a low port can, but a high port (curb or Pelham leverage bit) can tilt forward and place pressure on the horse’s palate, so can be very strong and are not generally recommended. The same mouthpiece designs can be found across the various families of bitting.

Fit is key to a happy and responsive horse

It is not just the mouthpiece that changes size for a smaller or larger bit, the ring and cheek* size can vary according to the mouthpiece size too. These sizes are indicated as measurements A or B at the end of the bit descriptions which correspond to the diagram above.

to measure your Horse for a Bit:

1. It is important that a bit is the correct width. Too wide will cause bruising and trauma, too narrow and it will pinch. For the correct mouthpiece width there should be a ¼ inch (5mm) clear on both sides. And index finger placed on each side is a good measure of the appropriate width.

The mouthpiece is measured between the inner ring hole edges as shown as C in the diagram. For the correct height a straight bar bit should sit neatly into the corners of the mouth and a jointed one just high enough to create gentle wrinkles.

2. With the bit at the correct height, place a gentle contact on both reins and then look from the front to judge the protruding mouthpiece width. For safety’s sake, keep your face to one side in case he suddenly lifts his head up. With a loose ring bit, take the measurement from the inside of the whole through which the ring passes. Routine Mouth Care

Make it part of your horse’s stable management routine to have his teeth checked regularly by a good Equine Dental Technician or Vet. Ask them to show you how to part your horse’s lips and look at his mouth and bars after active work as this will enable you to be aware of bitting problems before they become issues.

N.B. Do not put your fingers inside your horse’s mouth!

Routine Bit Care

For a long life, and your horse’s welfare, wash the bit after every use, checking it’s condition and dry it with a clean towel. Store in a dry environment. Keep a close eye on your bridle and look out for stitching, loops, clips or buckles that may be in need of repair.

MOUTHPIECE MATERIALS EXPLAINED

Stainless Steel: the most common material for bit mouthpieces. Durable, easy to clean, tasteless and does not rust. Copper inserts are often used to create warmth and encourage salivation to keep the mouth soft.

Brass Alloy: copper is alloyed with a harder metal to produce warm, durable mouthpieces which aid salivation and are more palatable than stainless steel.

Blue Sweet Iron: oxidises easily to create warmth with a sweet taste to help with bit acceptance and encourages salivation. The addition of brass alloy inserts produces a warm, more palatable bit. Please note the blue colour will fade with use.

Sweet Iron: designed to oxidize to produce a sweet taste which helps with mouthing. Copper ribs are sometimes included to ensure the horse will not take up too much of a contact, ideal for horses that can take a hold.

Rubber covered: generally thicker in the mouth, making them softer and particularly suited to sensitive mouths. Available as mild, flexible rubber or treated with heat to produce a harder rubber which has a slightly stronger action. It is important that the horse salivates effectively using rubber mouthpiece bits.

EquiKind: similar to rubber with the benefit of being lighter and more flexible. Particularly kind on the mouth making them ideally suited to young, sensitive horses. The apple flavour makes them palatable and therefore easily accepted.

EquiKind+: thinner in the mouth than rubber bits, more comfortable for a small or sensitive mouth and for horses that object to metal mouthpieces.

EquiKind Softie: Stainless steel with EquiKind Softie coating, offers a softtouch lightweight mouthpiece that warms quickly to the horse's mouth. The supple mouthpiece is kinder, ideal for young horses or those who reject metal.
