Who’s New? by Ava Timms, Berry and Siena Di Cuffa Several teachers joined Shiplake this year and we managed to catch up with a couple of them. We asked them the real questions.
MISS JAMES 1. If you were an animal, what animal would you be and why? Golden Retriever. Not only blonde hair, but I would also like to think I am friendly and outgoing! 2. Favourite place you have travelled to? Either Ghana or Vietnam - has to be a tie. 3. If you won a million pounds what's the first thing you would buy? A house in West Wales. 4. What is your favourite clothing brand? Zara
MR SOTOS 1. If you were an animal, what animal would you be and why? Royal Eagle. Eagles fly alone at high altitude. Eagles soar higher above the clouds than any other bird. Eagles have strong vision. Eagles do not eat dead things. Eagles love the storm. The eagle tests before it trusts. Eagles invest in training others. Eagles rejuvenate. 2. Favourite place you have travelled to? After 20 years as cabin crew for British Airways, I have seen almost the entire world, so one place is impossible. Thailand, Argentina, Israel, South Africa and Japan. 3. If you won a million pounds what's the first thing you would buy? A huge house with loads and loads of guest rooms to have all the people I love around me. 4. What is your favourite clothing brand? Harry Brown for the cool, funky suits. Ralph Lauren and Gucci of course. 5

Joseph Reviews by Mrs Magee and Welsh Matron The most amazing thing about Shiplake College’s production of Joseph, at the Kenton Theatre in Henley, was the cast. Joseph’s coat was pretty impressive too and wearing it was Sixth Form student Sam Bourke, who along with fellow Sixth Former Henry Kunzig, brought their own brand of boyish banter to the their lead roles of Joseph and Pharaoh. The diversity and inclusivity of Shiplake was well represented in this production with pupils from Year 7 upward in great voice and giving it their all. Among them was Year 10, drama scholar, James Lucking who played Joseph’s brother Ruben, again with great humour and a very good voice. The Sixth Form girls were also represented with Pheobe Kay, Emma O’Shea and Esme Young, all showing true talent in singing and dancing in their various roles.
The production was expertly narrated in song by Noah Scotchbook, who is a shining star in all of Shiplake’s music and drama events, and Sixth Form student Charlotte Garnett. Ukrainian student, Nikita Saitov played Dan, one of Joseph’s siblings and Sam Chambers and Max Noakes brought a comedic touch to their roles of brothers Simeon and Napthali. The show, which ran from February 15 to 17, was an absolute sell-out. The opening night was a joy to behold and as the final strands of Give Me My Coloured Coat rang out the audience was uplifted and the amazing cast exited to rapturous and well deserved, applause. A really well put together production that delivered on many levels for all who were fortunate enough to get tickets.

On entering the busy Kenton Theatre, the atmosphere was buzzing as everyone young and old looked forward to an evening of fantastic music (Shiplake never lets us down), fabulous choreography, and spell binding entertainment. As we took our seats, the band burst into action. The show had begun..... The narrators Noah Scotchbrook and Charlotte Garnet captivated the audience with their amazing storytelling through song. Joseph (Sam Bourke) confident and well rehearsed, along with his brothers, started their story showing their emotions through dance and song, which continued strongly throughout the show! Pharaoh (Henry Kunzig) drew the audience to join in with singing, laughter and clapping, especially during his rendition of “Song of the King” by ripping off his gown to reveal a white catsuit. Elvis Presley had entered the building (Aha!).
Clapping and jigging in seats to the well known songs continued throughout the show, especially when the younger performers all dressed in Hawaiian costume entered the stage to sing a calypso! It was a magical evening enjoyed by both audience and performers in a wonderful theatre. I cant wait to see what comes next !!!

Introducing Shiplake’s Eco-Committee
by Sam Edwards Many of us heard the announcement of the reformation of Shiplake’s Eco-committee in assembly earlier this year. But do you know the exciting endeavours that Mr Cooper and Chairperson Martha Berry have planned? I interviewed both Mr Cooper and Martha to find out about their initial motivation and to hear about the exciting short-term and long-term ideas for the Ecocommittee. We at the Viking Voice are very excited about the recent introduction of the Eco-committee and fully support all their actions. Mr Cooper and Martha showed a huge amount of enthusiasm and desire to make a difference. Both of them had similar initial motivation to stop the reliance on plastic around the school and increase the amount of recycling that happens around the school. They want to bring the entire community into a joint effort to make the school greener.
During COVID, the eagerness of the school’s eco efforts fell into the shadows since the absence of the pupils made this a very difficult task. However, it is evident that the Ecocommittee more than ever feel energised to focus the schools efforts towards this target. The long term initiatives seem compelling with the committee meeting every two weeks to discuss wider school issues. The Eco-committee feel they have the full support from Mr Howe, who is just as passionate about the work as the Eco-committee members themselves. It is very early days for the committee so currently they are in the middle of filling out surveys regarding our current eco measures, which will give the committee an idea of what to do next. Our own Eco-committee informants have given us a sneak peak into some of the ideas that are soon to be put in place… 8

SPRING 2022 The Eco-committee intends on becoming involved in the new development of the Stableyard; They are keen to incorporate the concept of ‘a green roof’ in addition to solar panels for the roofs. They wish to introduce a new tutor challenge, where each tutor group will receive seeds to plant in recycled plant pots. They will care for the plants across the rest of the academic year. At the end of the summer term, an auction hosted by the Ecocommittee will sell off the thriving flowers with all proceeds going towards either environmental charities or funding the school’s venture to become more environmentally friendly.

You may have noticed the newly installed recycling bins in all classrooms across the school campus. The Eco-committee is intent on encouraging all students and staff to recycle in an attempt to create a nicer environment for all.

The idea of an eco-classroom has recently been encouraged by all members of the committee, after seeing this idea executed by many other local schools. This would include wind powered elements in addition to solar panels, and potentially even elements of interactive learning for the Lower School

One of the committee’s key initiatives for the spring term is the introduction of Ecosia to all students. Ecosia is an eco-friendly browsing service used by many schools across the UK. By using Ecosia, we prevent pollution as the centre is powered completely by renewable energy sources. Last but not least, we have seen much enthusiasm towards the idea of a forest school being introduced to the curriculum. Martha and Mr Cooper both believe that their plans have the potential to make a considerable difference within the school. They both believe that the more that climate change is talked about and the more we discuss how we can become more eco-friendly, the more educated our community will become, furthering the effect beyond our community and into the wider world. If you are interested in getting involved with the Ecocommittee, it is open to all years and they are eager for more volunteers. But anyone can contribute by finding a member of the Eco-committee, made distinct by their blue badges, and passing on your ideas to be discussed in future committee meetings. 9

Staff and Teacher Favourites
by Declan Teevan I sent out a survey to our teachers and staff about some of their favourite things. You might be surprised by some of the results! Favourite Movie There were 49 responses for favourite movie, many of which were from a variety of different genres. The winner of this category was the “Back to the Future” series, with 3 votes, followed by “Inception”, the “Lord of the Rings” series, “Moulin Rouge” and “Love Actually”, each with 2 votes. Overall, there was a wide range of answers.

Favourite Sport Out of 48 responses, the most favoured sport was a close call between football and rugby. Rugby came out as the winner, with 7 votes (14.6%), followed by football, then cricket.
Favourite Snack There were a variety of different answers for the favourite snack category, but it ended up seeing flapjacks and sausage rolls tied for first place with five votes each.

Favourite School Subject These are the results for what subjects teachers and staff found their favourite when they were students.
Favourite Football Team 26 out of the 50 responses (52%) were for no favourite team. The remaining are shown below. Manchester United was the most voted team, with 12.5% of the vote.

Favourite Drink The winning drinks category was a tie between tea and wine, each receiving nine votes. The preferred wine was red, with five out of the nine votes that all the wines received. Coffee was a close third.
Favourite Teletubby Perhaps unsurprisingly, it was Po who ranked first among the teachers and staff as the favourite teletubby. Laa-Laa would have been disappointed to only come second.

The BIG Question: The Legalisation of Drugs
by Jett Dyason and Georgia Bradbury Should we legalise drugs? Some argue they have huge health benefits, others argue that it could damage our society. What do you think about the legalisation of drugs? In this article, we explore the thoughts of scientists at the school and their view of this controversial topic. We also look into the science behind how it can help aid people with severe diseases and using these drugs as medicines. In an attempt to get around the prevailing issue of PTSD in veterans and soldiers, scientists are researching treatments from a range of angles. Recently, a study funded by the multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies in Santa Cruz, CA, investigated the potential exploration of MDMA, which is the main active ingredient in the common party drug known as “ecstacy”.
MDMA causes the release of neurotransmitters, chemical messengers to brain cells that change brain activity. They include “feel-good” hormones like dopamine, serotonin, and norepinephrine, as well as oxytocin, prolactin, cortisol, and vasopressin. Because depression is a growing issue in our society, the main ingredient in the drug known as ‘magic mushrooms’, psilocybin, has been experimented on for the use of severe depression. Psilocybin has effects that are similar to those of LSD. People may experience feelings of relaxation and euphoria. The substance works by acting on pathways in the brain that involve the use of the neurotransmitter serotonin. This action results in changes in perception and altered consciousness. After taking psilocybin, people may experience effects such as distorted perceptions, including an altered sense of time or place, euphoria, hallucinations, and highly spiritual or introspective experiences.

Hallucinations are often a common experience after taking psilocybin. Research suggests that this is due to an increase in communication across different networks in the brain. Some researchers speculate that this may play a role in psilocybin's beneficial impact on depression. By changing brain connections and forming new ones, it may help people get out of depressive patterns To explore this topic even further, we decided to interview Head of Science, Dr Chare, and our chemistry teacher, Mr Jones. During our interviews we heard opposite views on the topic which highlights how the issue of the legalisation of drugs is by no means clear cut. Speaking first with Mr Jones, we asked him if he supported the use of drugs that, in his opinion, could help or treat people with conditions such as PTSD. He responded by saying: “At university I spent some time studying and researching the toxicity of various narcotic drugs. I can appreciate that certain 'illegal' drugs may have therapeutic effect, however, unless the drug has been thoroughly researched and tested for an intended purpose, I would not support the use of illegal drugs as a prescribed medical treatment.” Dr Chare shared her opinion saying: “Yes definitely. I can’t see why you wouldn’t. It has been proved in clinical trials that [these drugs] can be really helpful to medical conditions”. Following up on that question, we asked her what medical conditions she thinks would benefit most from the use of drugs, she responded with: “From what I have seen, from clinical trials, PTSD is definitely something that can be overcome> There were some really nice things that have been done in America relating to that, and definitely depression as well. In fact, there is a new program on Netflix that shows the use of psilocybin which is the active ingredient in LSD. It can be very useful in trying to treat people that are being treated for resistant depression and a mean number of 20 years for severe depression, and they were able to alleviate symptoms in clinical trials, done by Imperial College London. So yes, 100%, definitely other conditions too.” Continued on page 18…

When asking Mr Jones the same question, he also agreed that “the use of CBD oil from the cannabis plant, can treat long term chronic pain. It was quite evident that there is a link between its anti-inflammatory causes and its ability to relieve pain.” However, he only advocates the use of cannabis without the psychotic compounds, and if properly licensed. Lastly, when speaking to Dr Chare and asking about the negative effects of the legalisation of certain drugs for medical usage, she replied that, “none come to mind, as we already tightly control the use of drugs like heroin in the form of morphine.” Mr Jones’ opinion dovetailed with this view, saying; “If you licence a drug, and it’s a good use then that’s great. However, you need to be careful in that a lot of these drugs are not managed appropriately and can become gateway drugs for something that would have a harsher impact on the body, for example, links between cannabis and looking for another illegal high along the lines of cocaine and potentially heroin. Furthermore if you legalise these drugs, then they are easier to get hold of and therefore more open to abuse.” In conclusion, having weighed both sides of the argument, we happily advocate for the legalisation of drugs for its medical benefits for those struggling with mental disorders and chronic pain. We want people to receive the treatment that they deserve and ease them from the pain that they face daily and allow them to live their day to day life in the way that they should. That’s what we think, how about you?

Activities in Action
by Dulcie Atherton-Bebbington and Lottie Payne Darts club
A new club founded by members of the sixth form and chaired by Taj Angell, Shiplake has introduced the darts club, where members can enjoy playing darts and socialising in a relaxed environment. It has been a great success for its members and has become a firm favourite activity of many. Louis Pottier says, “it's a fun new activity and has given me a chance to try something I wasn’t able to do before in my activity slot. It is a chance for me to let off some steam and relax in the afternoon and enjoy spending time with my friends and some friendly competition.” It's been very well received so far. The members hope to expand it other year groups and maybe even one day set up a darts league with other schools.
Creative i-media
Run by Miss Bhatti, Creative i-media is a club similar to the Duke of Edinburgh award, but for students with less passion for the outdoors and a greater liking for computer sciences. As we entered the Goodwin classroom, we were met by an eager group of students, all keen to share their enthusiasm for the activity. The boys explained the modules and the process they go through to achieve the qualifications at the end of the year. It includes a variety of different software programming courses. Each boy said they would 100% recommend the Creative i-media club to all members of the Shiplake community, for it not only provides you with a qualification but also allows you to access a different degree of technological skills with the help of Miss Bhatti as your guide: “a fabulous mentor,” said the boys. Ollie Smee commented, “my favourite part of Creative i-media is the sweets we get as prizes for finishing modules!” 19

Henley Coffee Shops: Review
by The Viking Voice Team On a dreary day in March, the Viking Voice team traipsed into Henley to sample the delights of its coffee shops. Here’s what we found:
Caffè Nero Caffè Nero is nice but quite expensive. It’s located on Henley High Street, so it is easy to get to and find. The things we liked the most were the interior decor, which had a nice theme and created a good atmosphere, and the customer service, which we rated as “amazing” due to the speed of the service. Another positive thing was the quality of the food. The ham and cheese panini was especially good and was “toasted well” according to Gordon. Perhaps the one thing that let Caffè Nero down was the actual coffee, which was well presented (see the picture to your right), but tasted kind of average. Other drinks? The hot chocolate was rated highly, but was considered a little expensive. Overall, Caffè Nero earned a score of three stars from our reviewers, Declan and Gordon.

Henley Coffee Shops: Review
by The Viking Voice Team Hot Gossip Lottie and Dulcie were very impressed with Hot Gossip and gave it a five star review rating of “amazing”. Why? “Our drinks were amazing and we loved our rocky road too!! Best we’ve ever had!! Lottie had an iced coffee, which was complemented by a deliciously sweet vanilla syrup, whilst Dulcie indulged in a rich hot chocolate made of the finest cocoa powder known to man! The staff had clear communicative skills, and were very kind and cheerful, and thus Hot Gossip got full marks for customer service. This coffee shop also scored well for its unique 60s themed decor. The juke box at the centre of the shop is very unusual for a coffee shop, and is constantly playing great hits which further the coffee shop vibe. We would 100% recommend Hot Gossip to anyone! Kind staff and phenomenal food and drinks, in particular the decadent rocky road, filled generously with marshmallows and digestive biscuit.

by The Viking Voice Team Starbucks Only two stars for Starbucks? Sam and Jett explain: “The coffee was of a somewhat good quality but I would say that it lacked the richness of good coffee like in Berries. The coffee beans lacked strength and was slightly disappointing for a major chain. I would also like to note that the coffee was not a reasonable price being £3.65 for a regular flat white.” However, the other drinks were highly rated. “We ordered a chocolate cream which is a chocolate milkshake/frappuccino. Overall this was a very nice and freshening drink which would be very nice in the summer. It was very delicious and was difficult to stop sipping.” How about the food? Our reviewers ordered the banana cake, which was enjoyable - especially the assortment of nuts on the top - but a little on the dry side. The cafe was clean and the customer service was good. The location of the coffee shop is excellent, being right in the middle of town.
It was slightly disappointing that many of the chairs were thrown away on the top of couches, meaning that the seating places were constricted. Overall, the overpriced drinks put us off Starbucks.

Henley Coffee Shops: Review
by The Viking Voice Team Berries Sam and Jett may have been a bit harsh on Starbucks, but they loved Berries! Sam explains, “I ordered a flat white and the coffee was of very good quality, being very rich. We found out that this barista brews his own coffee. This is one of the nicest coffees I have had in a very long time and would definitely go again.” The two baristas were very friendly and chatty. I would say this is a very big strength of the café. They have a good location on the high street and the coffee shop gives off a very nice and warm mood. They have a very nice arrangement of food, which can been seen from the outside, with a huge variety of baked goods on show.
In a very rare chance, Sam and Jett met Harry Styles in Berries. (Could this be true???) They said he was getting coffee with his girlfriend. “We were both very surprised and tried to get a picture for the article, but he politely declined. This could be because he looked a bit ill and probably wasn't planning on being recognised due to having a beanie and a mask on. However, he was very nice even though we got turned down! 23

by The Viking Voice Team The Chocolate Cafe The Chocolate Cafe is located along Henley riverside and has a beautiful view of the river with features of flower pots and decorations and a perfect outdoor seating area. The interior is dated, but has a calm touch. It has low level lighting, which is well suited to the coffee shop and its green and purple interior and fairy lights add a cosy touch. The tables were small and overcrowded with chairs, while the background music was groovy and created a positive atmosphere with retro vibes. Uniquely it has a small shop, selling mugs, bags, cards and other decorations. We encountered very polite servers, and the owner was kind and quick to make the drinks, which were brought to us on a tray. We were even given a discount. The white chocolate rocky road was tasty, although the use of white chocolate instead of milk meant that it became quite sickly. The chocolate fudge cake was quite dry, did not taste completely fresh and felt as if it had been frozen. However the chocolatey flavour was nice. The coffee tasted quite cheap; nothing too extravagant. The taste was quite bitter even with sugar. The overall presentation was average, so a middle score is appropriate.
The two white hot chocolates were very tasty and very sweet and we did enjoy them. However, they became sickly pretty easily and we didn’t finish them due to their large size. The regular hot chocolate was not as enjoyable, it was very bitter and tasted of pure cocoa powder. It tasted as if there was no milk or sugar inside. 24

Race For Ukraine: Winners and Losers
by Lottie Payne On the 24th of February 2022, Russian troops marched into Ukraine over their eastern border and the lives of the people of Ukraine changed instantly. However, just as quickly, as the tanks rolled in, so did the donations. Humanitarian charities mobilised around the world to try to right Russia’s wrongs. In the UK alone, over £100 million has been raised in a remarkably short amount of time, which has allowed for organisations such as Save the Children, Cafod, and many many more, to act quickly by setting up refugee centres on the Ukrainian border and provide food and clothing to the many people forced out of their homes by the conflict. Even the Queen and other members of the Royal Family have donated generously to the cause.
Shiplake quickly followed suit, mobilising the school community to allow them to raise funds to aid the humanitarian work needed in Ukraine. Our sponsored run was 4.5km; a combined total distance of all our runners would represent the distance between Shiplake and Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv. The efforts from the whole community - held together by the Rev’s phenomenal organisation skills - generated over £19,000 with gift aid, which was then gifted to the Disaster's Emergency Committee. This was an incredible achievement and a testament to the school and its ability to respond to crises.

However, there are not only winners in this race. Only seven years ago, the people of Syria were in a similar place; left homeless by the conflict in their land and forced to flee their homes. However, unlike the many Ukrainian refugees, they were not always welcomed. Rather, they were often shunned and seen as a problem instead of a people in need. As one million people were forced to flee over the course of the year, they greatly struggled to find asylum as countries refused homes to them. In comparison, in the space of two weeks after the war in Ukraine broke out, well over two million Ukrainian refugees had found asylum in Europe.

I asked the Rev about this and he was able to give another perspective to the Ukrainian crisis, explaining how this crisis feels much closer to home and how we are more motivated to help as we are able to see ourselves in the Ukrainian people. Conflicts in the Middle East are perhaps harder to relate to as they are much further away.

Nonetheless, he did acknowledge that there needs to be more equality in how refugees from all countries, faiths and races are treated and he is working towards aiding Shiplake in being part of the solution.

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF YOUR TUTOR Your tutor woke up at time and left home at time in their vehicle. They arrived at school just in time for assembly. Having not had their drink they were in a/an emotion mood which was not ideal as they were teaching year number first period. This led to a number point infraction being handed out to name of student for being adjective. They were then able to mark the test on topic which they had set their year number class last week, the results of which were adjective. During their break they met with name of teacher and spoke about name of celebrity while getting a drink from the staff room. They were so engrossed in their conversation that they were number minutes late to their next lesson with year number. They then had a class with year number and spent the lesson with a whole group discussion on topic. At lunch they had name of food and sat with name of teacher and name of teacher discussing their shared enjoyment of movie/ tv show. Their next lesson was with year number and so watched a video on topic while they finished marking the tests. COMPETITION TIME! Shiplake’s Coolest Teachers
by Dulcie Artherton-Bebington For this edition of the Viking Voice, we wanted to explore a new question…who is Shiplake College’s coolest teacher? We sent out a survey and here are the top 3 teachers as voted by you!
And the winner is… Mr Claridge “It is an absolute honour to have been voted the coolest teacher at Shiplake! Without my dog and my beard this wouldn’t have been possible. Thank you to all those that voted even if some of the explanations I received afterwards from the students are questionable”
In second place… Mr Wheeler “I’m pretty sure the voting was rigged as there is no way Mr Claridge is cooler than me - he doesn’t even own a bobble hat! But I am very happy to come second.”
In third place… Mr Player “I feel very happy to come third. Although, I have to say, it is really very easy to be cool in history because history is such a cool subject. It is hardly a fair contest!!”
