HAGANE GEAR TECHNOLOGY
The HAGANE Drive Gear is produced by Shimano’s cold forging technology, without the need for additional machining. This results in gearing parts which retain the characteristics of the pure material, keeping it as strong as possible.
BENEFIT
This delivers a long-lasting smoothness, strength, lightness and power at the very heart of the reel. Traditional die cast machined gears are less durable under heavy loads, but HAGANE Gear is tremendously strong and durable.
MICROMODULE GEAR TECHNOLOGY
MICROMODULE GEAR is a machined gear component, made with great precision. The super-refined teeth produce seamless engagement with other gears.

X-SHIP TECHNOLOGY
X-SHIP stands for Extra Smooth & High Power. It is a precision gearing system which enables smooth yet strong reeling. By supporting the pinion gear at both ends and integrating a bigger drive gear with improved positioning, increased gearing efficiency and power is produced. It results in ultra-light handle rotation combined with excellent power efficiency.

INFINITYXROSS TECHNOLOGY
INFINITYXROSS is an advanced drive gear technology that uses wider gear teeth. Compared to similar sized gears, INFINITYXROSS increases durability by 100% without affecting smoothness.

SILENTDRIVE TECHNOLOGY
The SilentDrive technology encompasses the total redesign of the internal components to reduce microscopic handle play and eliminating noise and any unnatural feeling from the worm shaft drive. The combination of these redesigned components and extremely fine engineering tolerances produces an extremely smooth and silent reeling sensation.

INFINITY DRIVE TECHNOLOGY
Infinity Drive is an advanced structure that creates exceptionally light winding. The main shaft, which had previously been supported by the pinion gear, is now supported by a new and unique low-friction bushing that significantly decreases frictional resistance. In addition, the main shaft has undergone a proprietary surface treatment and special processing to drastically reduce rotational torque, constructing a reel that can actively wind even under heavy loads.

SUPER STOPPER II
TECHNOLOGY
Super Stopper II anti-reverse uses a one-way roller bearing that completely eliminates back-play in the reel.
2-SPEED GEARING TECHNOLOGY
BENEFIT
When the reel stops rotating, the rotor will stop immediately without any back-play. No back-play in the reel makes the reel more reliable and provides the angler instant hook setting power, without losing energy because of back-play in the reel.
This shifting mechanism is designed so that gearing changes are quick and easy, even when fighting a fish. The low gear ratio used for highpower retrieves is selected by pushing the button on the base of the handle. Return to the high-speed ratio by sliding the release button along the handle shank.
BENEFIT
The high-speed ratio is made for fast line retrieving and will be used during the regular fishing circumstances. The low gear ratio is perfect for fighting a heavy fish or fishing with very heavy baits and leads. The shifting can be done instantly, with great smoothness and without gear meshing.
HAGANE BODY TECHNOLOGY
HAGANE BODY is made out of precision machined aluminium or magnesium. These body designs create stiffness and impact resistance, while at the same time eliminating flexing of the body. The HAGANE BODY is highly rigid and protects gear rotation performance from heavy loads and shocks.
BENEFIT
The high rigidity makes the reel body very strong, tough and protects the gears and inner workings. At the same time, the body has a low weight and minimal flex, warp or distortion. The result is a rock-solid housing and support for the moving internal gearing and greater efficiency throughout the reel. This helps increase smoothness and powerful reeling.
CI4+ TECHNOLOGY
A CI4+ Body is made out of CI4+ composite material with very special characteristics. It is stronger than the original CI4 and XT-7 graphite, and also lighter in weight. Because CI4+ does not contain any metal, it is not affected by corrosion, making it suitable for saltwater use. CI4+ parts are lighter and stronger than any other composite material Shimano uses in their products.
BENEFIT
The application of a CI4+ Body results in a lightweight yet strong reel, which is corrosion resistant. Reels with a CI4+ body are ideal for lure fishing, when continuous casting is required, and also for saltwater situations where corrosion may be a problem over time.
BODY
CORE SOLID BODY TECHNOLOGY
The Core Solid Body, which is featured on some bait casting reels, integrates the B-Side Plate, level wind guard and frame into one solid once piece construction.
BENEFIT
This Core Solid Body delivers an unprecedented feeling of rigidity and sensitivity and is the first design of this type in a low-profile Baitcasting reel.
X SHIELD TECHNOLOGY
By placing sealing gaskets in critical locations throughout the reel body, Shimano is able to create a water-resistant structure that can hold up against the toughest conditions, giving excellent protection from water and foreign object ingress.
BENEFIT
Because of the X-Shield water resistant sealing, the reel is protected against water, dirt, salt and dust. That’s really important, because water and foreign objects can affect the functioning of the gearing and other mechanical parts of the reel. X Shield also increases the life-time and durability of the reel and ensures excellent longevity of performance.
G FREE BODY TECHNOLOGY
G Free Body technology has been developed to shift the reel’s centre of gravity closer to the rod. This has been achieved by moving the oscillation mechanism more towards the top of the reel. By moving the centre of gravity closer to the angler’s hand position, the G Free Body helps to reduce fatigue and enhance casting comfort.
BENEFIT
The closer the reel’s centre of gravity is to the rod, the better the combination of rod and reel balance. The reel actually feels lighter, because the weight is closer the hand. This results in a reel with improved casting balance, which requires less casting effort and reduces fatigue when fishing over extended periods.
CORE PROTECT TECHNOLOGY
Core Protect is a Shimano technology which is developed to keep water out of the reel, without creating a heavier rotation feeling, in two areas:
1. The Roller Clutch Bearing. This is the most critical area when comes to balancing water resistance without affecting the light and smooth rotation. A surface protection coating causes water to bead preventing water from flowing into the small crevices where it can reach the mechanism of the roller clutch bearing.
2. The Line Roller: A line roller with Core Protect has a one-piece design that provides water resistance and low maintenance. The sealed design does not require oil.
BENEFIT
Core Protect prevents water entering the body of the reel. This prevents corrosion and other problems with the gearing or other internal parts of the reel.
X PROTECT TECHNOLOGY
X Protect is a protection mechanism consisting of either rubber seals in larger reels or a combination of water repellent coating and a labyrinth structure in smaller spinning reels. The rubber seal system is designed to keep low pressure water out of the reel. In some areas grease is added to resist high pressure water from entering. The labyrinth construction is added to smaller reels to make it water resistant for much longer. All of this does not affect the smooth rotation performance.

X Protect seals the roller clutch, to prevent water intrusion. This advanced protection technology increases the durability of the reel and gives a high-level protection in even the toughest conditions. This ensures good performance for a long time, without affecting the smoothness of the reel when rotating.
PARALLEL BODY TECHNOLOGY
Shimano’s Parallel Body technology ensures the rod and reel alignment is perfectly parallel. The axel and spool are parallel to the rod, minimising the amount of line slapping onto the blank between the spool and the first guide during the cast.
BENEFIT
Parallel Body increases the overall casting performance of a reel. It makes more precise and longer casting possible and reduces the potential for tangling because there is less friction and line slap during a cast, especially in the area around the first guide.
‘S’ COMPACT BODY SPECIFICATION
A ‘S’ Compact Body is found on Baitcasting and small multiplier reels. It has an asymmetrical side plate construction where the side plate on the handle side of the reel is larger to accommodate the gears, whilst the opposite side (palming) is smaller than a conventional side plate for increased comfort and functionality.

BRAKE SYSTEM
SPECIFICATION
The brake is an indispensable part of a baitcasting reel. At the start of the cast, the reel spool has to turn very quickly, while at the end of the cast (when the lure almost hits the water) the spool has to turn a lot slower to prevent an overrun of line. The brake regulates the turning speed of the spool, so it will reduce the speed during the cast, preventing knots and making accurate trouble-free casting possible. Setting the drag is a very precise job: too much brake will decrease the casting distance drastically, while not enough brake will cause an overrun of line and resulting tangles.
DIGITAL CONTROL TECHNOLOGY
The Digital Control system is a waterproof, self-energizing system which is computer chip controlled. It recharges with each cast and needs no battery or power source. During the initial moments of the cast, the energy generated by the rotation of the spool is stored in the Digital Control circuit board and powers the Digital Braking System on subsequent casts. During the cast, the Digital Braking system calculates and provides the optimal braking force.
BENEFIT
This revolutionary system makes accurate and long-distance casting possible, while at the same time minimising tangles, knots and overruns. It anticipates hard casting conditions, like fishing in windy weather or casting very light baits. The DC system produces excellent casting performance for both beginner and tournament anglers.
DIGITAL CONTROL 5 TECHNOLOGY
I-DC5 has 2 sets of dial adjustment. With the internal dial, you can select the type of line used. (1. Nylon, 2. Fluorocarbon, 3. Braided PE Line).
The external dial adjustment has a selection of 4 semi-automatic settings, dependent on lure size, plus an ‘AUTO’ function, letting the onboard DC decide optimal brake setting.
BENEFIT
With this new technology, anglers can achieve long and consistent casting. It is easy to configure, especially when using the AUTO function. I-DC5 makes excellent casting possible, even in the hardest conditions.
DIGITAL CONTROL 4 TECHNOLOGY
The I-DC4 braking system is an intelligent Digital Control braking system with an easy to use, 4 setting externally adjustable brake dial. This will allow anglers to fish a wide variety of lures, in any conditions, with minimal adjustment to the reel. 4 modes can be set using the external dial.

SVS INFINITY TECHNOLOGY
SVS Infinity provides easy-to-manage, consistent spool control and brake force. With brake weights that use 'inner friction' against the raceway during the cast, SVS Infinity controls spool speed for precision casting, especially when using lighter lures. The external adjustment knob provides quick, precise adjustments for either the conditions or when you switch lure size.
BENEFIT
SVS Infinity provides an adjustable brake dial to provide a much wider and more precise range for maximum control and consistent brake performance, in all conditions. SVS infinity allows almost ‘infinite’ precision when casting.
FINE TUNE BRAKING TECHNOLOGY
FTB is a brake system developed especially for finesse Baitcasting reels. The brake unit is usually located on the side of the spool, but the FTB system is outside the spool reducing weight. By turning the knob on the outside of the reel, magnets are moved deeper or shallower into the spool. Deeper means more braking power, shallower means less braking power. This adjusts itself to the rotational speed of the spool during the cast creating the right amount of braking power.
BENEFIT
The FTB system biggest advantage is the ultralight spool. The lightweight spool enables long and accurate casts to be made with very light lures. The braking system, with the magnets, is extremely sensitive and can be set very precisely for optimal braking power in every situation.
VBS BRAKING TECHNOLOGY
VBS uses centrifugal force rather than magnets to aid controlling the cast. When turned on, the individual brake weights are forced outward at the beginning of the cast, when backlashes most often occur, causing friction that reduces the speed of the spool. Once the spool speed begins to slow, the pressure with which the brake weights contact the raceway lessens, allowing the spool to continue spinning and improving the casting distance. VBS braking can only be changed on the inside of the reel, there is no external dial.
BENEFIT
The result is a much more consistent spool speed, that is easier to manage and takes advantage of the reel's maximum casting distance. Settings range from zero weights turned on for true free-spool rotation, up to 6 weights turned on for extremely windy conditions and maximum cast control. This means that whatever the circumstances, you will be able to cast efficiently.
FALLEVER TECHNOLOGY
The unique Fallever allows anglers to control the fall speed and therefore the action of jigs during the drop to the bottom.
BENEFIT
The Fallever enables the angler to develop their own technique of fall action. Changing the fall action and speed of a jig can trigger fish to strike as the jig is falling through the water.
HI-SPEED DRAG TECHNOLOGY
Hi-Speed Drag is Shimano‘s fastest drag system and can change the drag setting from free-spool mode to fighting mode with only a very small turn to the knob located on the front of the spool.
BENEFIT
A very accurate and user-friendly free spool system. The angler can change the drag from free spool to fight settings in a split second. This provides optimal control and quick handling during the take and whilst playing a fish.
EXCITING DRAG SOUND TECHNOLOGY
Exciting Drag Sound is a technology which enables the angler to have a drag sound on a Baitcasting or multiplier type reel.
BENEFIT
It works in the same way as the sound of a spinning reel when line is pulled from the drag: a 'click-click-click' or a 'swoosh' sound is heard. This is a nice feature for a lot of anglers, who like to fish with a Baitcasting reel, but who are missing the sound of the drag when fighting a fish.
HEAT SINK DRAG TECHNOLOGY
Heat Sink technology enables dissipation of excessive heat build-up when the spool is rotating quickly and keeps the heat away from the spool surface and drag washer where it can cause a reduction in drag performance.
BENEFIT
When playing fish under extreme pressure, it is quite common for the drag pressure to reduce in resistance as heat builds up in the spool and drag system due to friction. The Heat Sink technology dissipates heat away from important areas and enables maximum drag performance to be maintained for longer. An additional advantage is it also keeps heat away from your line reducing potential damage.
DURACROSS DRAG TECHNOLOGY
Duracross Drag is an advanced drag washer construction that combines the best characteristics and feel of felt washers, including initial hooking power, with the increased durability of cross-carbon washers.
BENEFIT
Duracross Drag is a fantastic combination of feel and durability. It provides enough initial power (spike) to set hooks effectively, with enhanced smoothness and durability for a better fish-playing experience.
X TOUGH DRAG TECHNOLOGY
X Tough Drag is Shimano’s toughest drag configuration and incorporates large diameter drag washers at the base of the spool, which provide greater drag stability. The result is smooth and consistent drag performance throughout the fight.

X Tough Drag creates a more durable, smoother drag with increased stability. This results in more assured fish-playing, even in the most extreme circumstances.
CROSS CARBON DRAG TECHNOLOGY
Cross Carbon Drag is made out of a carbon drag washer matrix, which delivers great heat resistance and super smooth drag performance.
X DRAG TECHNOLOGY
X Drag is a drag star which is smaller than usual. This is done in order to position the reel handle closer to the body of the reel which increases cranking leverage, rigidity and torque.
BENEFIT
Cross Carbon Drag has great heat resistance, which results in improved durability when performing at maximum capacity.
BENEFIT
The closer the handle is to the body of the reel, the more power can be generated for a given force, which helps when playing large fish in extreme conditions.
RAPID FIRE DRAG TECHNOLOGY
Rapid Fire Drag is a drag system which is very precise and fast at the same time. It enables adjustment of the drag from heavy to light settings (and vice-versa) in only half a turn of the drag knob.
INSTANT-DRAG TECHNOLOGY
Shimano Instant-Drag allows a quick adjustment of the front drag knob to take the reel from a current drag setting to free spool in just half a turn (and vice-versa).
BENEFIT
This allows very quick adjustment of the drag during a fight, which is often necessary when fighting a big fish. Having the correct drag tension while playing fish reduces the chance of losing it.
BENEFIT
A very accurate and user-friendly free spool system. The angler can change the drag from free spool to fight settings in only a split second. This provides optimal control and quick handling during the take and the fight of a fish. It only takes a half turn (180 degrees) of the drag knob to close the drag. It’s incredibly simple, accurate and easy to use.
FIGHTIN’ DRAG II
TECHNOLOGY
The Fightin’ Drag mechanism is available for some spinning reels with a rear-drag system. Just above the rear drag knob there is an adjustment lever. This lever allows the angler to adjust the drag tension during the fight in a very controlled way by moving it to the right or the left to increase or decrease the drag pressure.
BENEFIT
When the lever is in central position, the drag tension is the same as the original configuration. When turned to the right (clockwise) the tension of the drag will be slightly increased. When turned to the left, the tension of the drag will be slightly reduced. This allows adjustment of the drag during the fight. Fightin' Drag II allows the angler to quickly get back to the original drag settings, by utilizing the ‘strike point’ on the Fightin' Drag lever. This is useful to make sure the hook can be set with the right drag tension.
BAITRUNNER SYSTEM (LEVER)
TECHNOLOGY
The Baitrunner Lever provides a secondary drag system which allows an angler to feed out line with a tension-controlled free-spool with the bail closed. To engage the main drag and set the hook, simply turn the handle or manually flip the Bait Runner lever to the ‘Off' position.
BENEFIT
This enables the angler to feed line out, lets the fish take the bait and run away, while still maintaining line control by having the bail closed. When the Baitrunner function is turned off, the normal drag settings are activated and you can play the fish. This is very useful for static ways of fishing where you want to give the fish the opportunity to swim away, but without losing control of the line. This system is often used by carp anglers to prevent a breakage on the take. It’s also used for sea fishing with natural bait.
THERMO ADJUST DRAG TECHNOLOGY
A control function designed to suppress abnormal heat generation of the drag to maintain stable drag performance. If the drag slips while the motor of the electric reel is on, the gear will idle and cause an abnormal heat generation in the drag area. In order to suppress this heat generation, when the drag is slipping, the motor speed is automatically reduced.
BENEFIT
During fights with strong fish in a saltwater environment, anglers will keep full drag power and lines keep their breaking strength due the smart heat outflow.
HYDROTHERMAL DRAG
TECHNOLOGY
In any big-game reel, the heat build-up in the drag system caused by a hard-running fish will change the original drag setting. On Shimano reels that use the Hydrothermal Drag system, graphite washers are used that provide a wide range of drag settings and low start up inertia. Graphite washers lose pressure with heat, which is better than gaining pressure with heat that could lead to the reel locking up. To compensate for this loss, an oil filled cylinder that expands when heated is fitted which immediately returns the drag back to within 10% of its original setting.

A very reliable drag with a minimum loss of pressure, no matter how big the fish is and how hard it runs during the fight.
FRONT DRAG (FD)
FEATURE
A front drag spinning reel has the drag knob located on top of the reel spool. This category is the most popular type of spinning reel.
LINE COUNTER
FEATURE
A counter is added to some multiplier reels, in order to count the distance or depth being fished.
BENEFIT
The main advantage of a front drag is that it controls the drag directly on the spool and is easy to adjust whilst playing a fish.
BENEFIT
A very helpful feature for trolling and deep sea fishing. You know exactly how far behind the boat or how deep the bait is presented.
REAR DRAG (RD)
FEATURE
A rear drag spinning reel has the drag knob located at the back of the reel.
BENEFIT
Main advantage of a rear drag is that it is very easy to access and asjust whilst playing a fish.
WATERPROOF DRAG TECHNOLOGY
The Waterproof Drag contains rubber gaskets which are placed to protect the drag system. It seals the drag against intrusion of the elements such as water and dust.
DARTANIUM DRAG TECHNOLOGY
This drag material provides a wider range of drag settings, along with very smooth drag performance.
BENEFIT
The Waterproof Drag makes the drag more reliable and durable and is especially important when fishing in extreme circumstances. By minimising water ingress the integrity of the drag system isn’t compromised.

This makes the drag more reliable, ensuring it will work very smoothly without any problems, even when placed under extreme pressure.
LEVER DRAG
FEATURE
A lever drag multiplier has a drag which can be set using a lever at the side of the reel. Lever drags are designed for big, hard fighting fish.
STAR DRAG
BENEFIT
The lever system offers very precise adjustment and is able to brake the run of a big fish, by increasing the drag pressure during the fight. This is very useful with fast moving large fish like tuna.
FEATURE
A star drag multiplier has a drag which can be set using the star at the side of the reel. This is able to create a lot of drag tension.
BENEFIT
Star drag reels are more suitable for smaller multiplier reels as the drag system is lighter in weight.
CLICKER SYSTEM
FEATURE
When engaged, the clicker increases the tension on the freespool and activates a clicking alarm sound to alert you when a fish strikes.
ADJUSTABLE CLICKER SYSTEM
FEATURE
This clicker system allows the angler to adjust the amount of freespool tension while the clicker is on.
BENEFIT
This is very useful when bottom fishing, trolling and when using a baitfish without a float. When you get a bite, the reel will make a clicking sound as line is taken from the spool.
BENEFIT
You can adjust your clicker system to the exact tension you want. This is useful when fishing for weary fish and situations where you don’t want the fish to feel too much resistance after the take. Alternatively you can set the clicker with a lot of tension to self-hook the fish on the strike.
MAGNUMLITE ROTOR TECHNOLOGY
The Magnumlite Rotor is an ultra-light improved rotor made out of CI4+ material. The profile of the rotor is made asymmetrical and the bail arm mechanism, which is usually situated on the same side as the line roller, has been moved to the opposite side. Both of these changes improve the balance. The rotor rigidity at the line roller side has been improved and reduces the deflection under maximum pressure by up to 30%.

It makes the reel lighter, better balanced and it increases the sensitivity. This contributes to an overall improved experience of the reel with better, lighter and smoother reeling.
METAL ROTOR
METAL ROTOR TECHNOLOGY
Metal Rotor technology is used on Core Solid reels. Made from lightweight Aluminium or Magnesium, a Metal Rotor is incredibly rigid, preventing any distortion, even under extreme pressure.

The benefit of a Metal Rotor is an unimaginably smooth rotation feeling, improved drag performance, especially under extreme pressure, and supreme rigidity, giving the reel a reassuringly robust feel whilst maintaining lightness.
INFINITYLOOP TECHNOLOGY
Infinityloop is an ultra slow line oscillation designed for smaller spinning reels. The spool moves up and down very slowly as the rotor wraps line onto it, allowing the line to spool in an almost parallel configuration. This creates a smooth profile that improves line management when casting and also when playing fish.
BENEFIT
Infinityloop oscillation reduces the speed the line travels up and down the spool on the cast. SILENT TUNE TECHNOLOGY
Silent Tune is an advanced Shimano technology. As with any casting reel, the spool rides on bearings. These bearings have pockets in the frame or side plates which house the bearings and are given some tolerance in order to make the bearings more easily changeable. While the tolerance is necessary, it allows the bearings to move slightly during casting, leading to the smallest of vibrations that take energy away from the core of the reel and reduce the distance and smoothness of the cast. Silent Tune technology adds small springs under the bearings which keep the bearings in place, ensuring proper alignment and eliminating any movement or vibration that may occur.

SUPER FREE SPOOL TECHNOLOGY
Super Free was designed to eliminate friction on the spool shaft during the cast. In standard baitcasting reels, when the clutch bar is pressed down, the pinion gear is freed and can drag on the spool shaft creating friction that can limit the length of a cast. With SF, the pinion gear is supported by a ball bearing so that when the clutch is disengaged in preparation for a cast, the pinion gear and spool shaft are kept in perfect alignment.

SPOOL REDUCERS LINE CLIP

A line clip is a small clip, located just underneath the bottom edge of the line-winding part of the spool.

Spool reducers are plastic bands which are included with some reels (usually reels with a big spool capacity). They can be clicked on the spool, in order to reduce the spool capacity.

The line clip is usable for two situations:
1. The end of the line can be secured during transportation by putting it under the line clip. This prevents the line from unravelling.
2. The distance cast can be set using the line clip. Every cast will be exactly the same distance, which is a big advantage in certain coarse and carp fishing situations when the angler wants to fish a very specific spot.

X PROTECT TECHNOLOGY
X Protect is a protection mechanism consisting of either rubber seals in larger reels or a combination of water repellent coating and a labyrinth structure in smaller spinning reels. The rubber seal system is designed to keep low pressure water out of the reel. In some areas grease is added to resist high pressure water from entering. The labyrinth construction is added to smaller reels to make it water resistant for much longer. All of this does not effect the smooth rotation performance.

REEL SIZE GEAR RATIO

Reels are available in various sizes: 500, 750, 1000, 2000, 2500, 3000, 4000, 5000, 6000 - and larger. The number indicates the line capacity: a 1000 sized spool contains less line than a 3000 sized spool. However; the bigger line capacity of the reel, the bigger all the other components of the reel as well. A size 3000 reel is bigger than a size 1000. The right choice of reel size depends strongly on the rod used (length, casting weight), the method of fishing and personal preference.

(SELECTABLE) ANTI-REVERSE SPOOL LINE CAPACITY
SPECIFICATION
This feature allows the angler to disengage the anti-reverse function enabling the reel to be wound backwards to release line. The reverse option of the reel is useful for quick and smooth line release without opening the bail, or having to pull line while using the drag. It's not standard on every spinning reel, because it has one disadvantage: the lever needs a small opening in the reel body. Removing the function removes the opening, which reduces water and dirt ingress into the main body of the reel.
SPECIFICATION
The spool line capacity indicates how much line can be spooled on the reel spool. This is communicated in length of metres (m) or yards (yds) and line diameter (mm) or line strength (lb).
MAXIMUM DRAG FORCE LINE RETRIEVE PER CRANK
SPECIFICATION
The maximum drag force is a number in kg / lb, which shows the maximum tension of the drag. For example: when the maximum drag force of a reel is 6kg, a pressure of 6kg or more is required before the drag starts to give line when in the fully closed position.
SPECIFICATION
The ‘line retrieve per crank / handle turn’ specification explains how much line is retrieved in one full turn of the reel handle. This is measured in centimetres. This indicates the retrieving speed of the reel. A fast retrieving reel is often wanted by surf casting and carp anglers, because they can retrieve their lead and bait very quickly when fishing at extreme range. Generally, the bigger the spool size, the more line retrieved per handle turn. The same goes for the gear ratio: the faster the gearing (a higher gear ratio) means more line retrieved per handle turn when compared to a reel with a lower gearing ratio.

Shimano’s CI4+ is a composite (composite = two or more raw materials combined) material with very special characteristics. It is stronger than the original CI4 material and lighter in weight. Because CI4+ does not contain any metal, it is impervious to rust and corrosion. CI4+ reel parts are lighter and stronger than any other composite material used by Shimano.

Magnesium is used by Shimano for a select number of ultra high quality reels where weight saving is essential. The use of magnesium offers a weight reduction of up to 10% compared to aluminium with the same strength and rigidity.

Cold Forging means forging aluminium at room temperature without the need for excessive heat. Very heavy pressure is used to force the aluminium or magnesium into its shape and this technology results in super strong and rigid reel parts. The commercial name of this technology used by Shimano, is HAGANE.

E.I. Treatment is a Shimano technology which makes reel components more corrosion resistant. With E.I., after the anodization process is finished, a second layer of surface treatment is added. This treatment is forced into the remaining surface impurities. This gives dirt and especially salt no area to hold on to and also results in an extremely smooth finish. A reel with E.I. treatment has more than double the corrosion resistance of a standard anodized reel. This is especially important when fishing in salt water.
A-RB BEARING TECHNOLOGY
Shimano Anti-Rust Bearings (A-RB) have undergone a special heat treatment process resulting in high metal strength and long lasting corrosion resistance.
S A-RB BEARING TECHNOLOGY
These bearings have undergone a special heat treatment resulting in high metal strength. Shielded A-RB bearings use either a rubber shield or stainless steel shield (depending on bearing size) for the ultimate in corrosion resistance and contaminant protection against sand, salt or dust.
BENEFIT
Because of their treatment, these bearings will last much longer than standard stainless steel ball bearings, in high salinity environments.
Note: Although these bearings are not shielded like the Shimano Shielded A-RB bearings, this does not automatically mean that they are more fragile or vulnerable. Sometimes the actual positioning of an A-RB bearing in a Shimano reel can already rule out the chance of contamination by sand, salt or dust and makes the need for additional shielded protection unnecessary.

These bearings will last longer than standard stainless steel ball bearings and have protection against sand, salt and dust. The shielded technology makes the bearings very reliable and durable, which ensures smooth functioning of the reel for a very long time.
LEVEL WIND SYSTEM REEL SIZE (Baitcasting)
TECHNOLOGY
On wide spool reels with a non-disengaging level wind system, the level wind remains engaged during the cast allowing the level wind to track back and forth across the spool with the line, as it flows off the spool. This eliminates the drastic line angles caused by a disengaging level wind system, which can cause extreme friction and lead to short casts or frustrating backlashes.

This increases the efficiency of the cast, allowing more distance with less effort. It also prevents backlashes and knots in the line.
SPECIFICATION
The reel size of a baitcasting reel is indicated by a number: 71, 101, 201, 301, 401. The higher the number, the larger the line capacity of the reel. Usually other components (like size of the body) will increase in the larger sizes of reel.
