Michiko Itatani has long described her paintings as a form of fiction. Her depictions of constructed, symbolic spaces in which multiple systems of knowledge collide and cohere are part observatory, part archive, and part stage for cosmic operas to play out. Objects seem to oscillate between scientific instrument and metaphysical sign. Globes, diagrams, vessels, and architectural fragments appear not as fixed symbols but as elements within an unfolding narrative, inviting the viewer to read rather than simply look. Itatani is “using the painting language to write [her] fiction… inviting the viewer to participate and complete my painting.”
Cosmic Codes continues this inquiry, presenting a body of work that examines the persistent human desire to map, measure, and make sense of the unknown. Itatani’s paintings explore tensions between body and cosmos, and between the individual and larger systems. Her compositions suggest sites of concentrated attention. They are depictions that question space, perception, and memory; each element seems to point toward both internal consciousness and the vastness of the cosmos.
What distinguishes this presentation is scale. Known for expansive, immersive canvases, Itatani here compresses her visual language into intimate formats without diminishing its conceptual reach. Instead, the shift in scale recalibrates the encounter. The viewer is drawn closer, into a mode of looking that mirrors the act of deciphering: of leaning in and holding a fragment up to scrutiny. In these smaller works, the “cosmic” does not recede but becomes concentrated, as if the same vast systems have been folded inward, encoded more densely. The result is a paradox: paintings that feel at once contained and expansive. The intimacy of scale sharpens, rather than limits, the sense of boundless inquiry.
