Hands-On Ceramics

Learning and creating different ceramic forms.

What we're making

The first project you'll learn to make is a slab bowl. You will learn what you need and how to do it step by step. .

The next project is a pinch pot. You will learn new techniques through this project that you can use for others.

The last project you will learn is a coil pot. Coil pots are very important for later projects in life when wanting to use add ons.

This is the clay used for most projects like these.

These are loop tools. We use them to create carved lines in the clay.

We use wet sponges to smooth out any bumpy surfaces.

What you'll need

These are craft knives. It allows us to cut the clay..

This is a needle tool. We use it for precision and creating score marks.

Slip is clay mixed with water. It acts as cement.

Creating Slab Bowls

Wedging clay is important to make sure there are no air bubbles in your clay. This way it won't explode in the kiln.

Put the slab in or over the bowl. Design how you want and let it get leatherhard.

Bone dry is when it is fully dry and ready for the kiln the first time.

The next step is to make a slab. We put two rulers on the side of the clay and roll it out. .

Leatherhard is when clay is party dry. Firm enough to carve into.

Make a sphere, then dent the middle with your finger.

Creating Pinch Pots

Pinch around the dent to make it larger.

After continued pinching, this is what you should have

To make it your own, you can add ons such as a tentacle.

Glaze changes color after being fired, pick wisely!

Creating coil pots

The first step to making a coil pot, is picking your coils. You should pick up to three different coils. Make your pattern with these three coils.

After wedging, you get to pick a slab or pinch pot base.

After picking your base, start attaching your pattern by using the score and slip technique. This is where you scracth both sides you want to attach and use slip to stick them together.

This is a pinch pot I created using add ons!

Lastly, this is a slab bowl with a 2D Octopus!

This is a pinch pot Skull with tentacles!

This is a slab bowl I created. I then sculpted the octopus. The octopus exploded in the kiln due to air bubbles.
