March marks a turning point for many people each year. Perhaps because winter winds down and officially ends in mid-March, the month is easy to characterize as a turning point toward spring and all that entails, including warmer weather and additional hours of daylight. The vernal equinox is one of many interesting facts about the third month of the year.
1. March might mark the official return of spring, but the inspiration for its name is far less serene. According to Almanac.com, March is named for Mars, the Roman god of war. That might not jibe with modern impressions of March, but it makes sense from a historical perspective. That’s because military campaigns were once routinely suspended during the cold winter months. Upon the return of spring and the more favorable conditions it produced, military campaigns would start up again, thus making March an aptly named month.
2. Though presidential inaugurations in the United States are now held in Jan-
uary, that wasn’t always the case. In fact, March 4 was the official Inauguration Day until 1933, when the Twentieth Amendment was ratified and inaugurations were officially moved to January. Even George Washington, the first man to serve as President of the United States of America, was initially slated to be inaugurated on March 4. However, the Library of Congress notes that electoral ballots could not be counted as quickly as Congress anticipated, so the first inauguration was delayed until April 30, 1789. President Franklin D. Roosevelt holds the distinction of being the first American president to be inaugurated in January after he was sworn in on January 20, 1937.
3. March hosts one of the most beloved holidays across the globe, even though the day commemorates the patron saint of a small country in western Europe. St. Patrick is the primary patron saint of Ireland, a small island nation in the North Atlantic Ocean with a population of roughly seven
million people. Despite that, World Population Review reports that St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated in more than 200 countries each year on March 17. The New York City St. Patrick’s Day Parade is world-renowned, but the holiday is celebrated in other countries one might not immediately associate with Ireland and St. Patrick, such as Singapore, Russia and Japan.
4. College sports fans anxiously anticipate the arrival of March each year. That’s because the month marks the return of March Madness, a college basketball tradition that annually draws millions of fans to watch and/or attend games in the weeks long single-elimination NCAA Tournament that culminates with the national championship game. The origins of the phrase “March Madness” are not precisely known, though many historians trace the phrase to high school basketball in Indiana in the 1930s. Legendary broadcaster Brent Musburger is credited with associating the term with the NCAA Tournament in the 1980s.

Wet or dry, hot or cold, the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation continues to conserve and improve habitat in the Big Horns. Last year, the RMEF and partners finished an invasive weed treatment project in the Little Horn Canyon area designed to improve native forage for wildlife and continue to enhance almost 1000 acres of winter, transitional, and year-round elk, moose, and mule deer range in the Medicine Wheel District via the removal of encroaching conifers. Both projects are part of a larger cooperative effort for which the RMEF and partners allocated almost $8 million dollars (in 2025) to conserve and enhance habitat across Wyoming.
Year after year, the RMEF makes a habit of improving habitat (see what we did there?). Why? It’s simple: The mission of the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation is to “Ensure the future of elk, other wildlife, their habitat and our hunting heritage.”
To further that mission, the Sheridan Chapter of the RMEF invites you to attend and/or support our upcoming Big Game Banquet. Easter-themed cupcakes make a great treat for youngsters
Easter is widely characterized as the holiest day of the year on the Christian calendar. Faith features prominently in modern Easter celebrations, which also include some secular traditions, particularly in families with young children. The Easter bunny and Easter egg hunts are not necessarily the focal point of Easter for adult Christians, but children greatly
enjoy these traditions. It’s customary to give young children a basket of treats on Easter Sunday. Though storebought treats are easy to come by, homemade items can be even more special. This recipe for Easter-themed “Vanilla Cupcakes” from Lines+Angles, is sure to get a laugh out of youngsters, who also won’t mind taking a bite or two
of these tasty treats.
Vanilla Cupcakes
Makes 12 cupcakes
For the cupcakes:
4 ounces butter
1⁄2 cup sugar
2 eggs, beaten
11⁄4 cup flour
1 teaspoon baking powder 1⁄2 cup milk
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
For the grass:
41⁄2 ounces unsalted butter
11⁄3 cup icing sugar
1⁄2 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 tablespoon milk
Green food coloring
To decorate: 11 ounces white
sugarpaste/fondant
4 ounces pink sugarpaste/fondant
Icing sugar

1. For the cupcakes: Heat the oven to 375 F. Place paper cupcake liners in a 12-serving muffin tin.
2. Beat the butter and sugar in a mixing bowl until light and fluffy.
3. Gradually beat in the eggs, beating until fully incorporated into the mixture.
4. Sift in the dry ingredients and gently stir into the mixture. Stir in the milk and vanilla until blended.
5. Spoon the mixture into the paper liners. Bake for about 20 minutes, until golden. Cool in the tin for 5 minutes, then place on
a wire rack to cool completely.
6. For the grass: Beat the butter until soft. Sift in the icing sugar and beat until smooth. Beat in the vanilla and milk until blended. Reserve about 2 tablespoons of buttercream and set aside.
7. Beat the food coloring into the larger amount of buttercream.
8. Spoon into a piping bag with a grass nozzle. Pipe on top of the cupcakes, starting at the outside edge and working in circles. pulling up and away when a buttercream strand is long enough.
9. Roll pieces of white sugarpaste into 12 medium balls for the bodies and 24 small thick rectangles for the paws. Reserve some white sugar paste.
10. Brush the paws lightly with a little water and attach to the bodies (see photo).
11. Roll 12 small balls and 72 tiny balls of pink sugarpaste. Cut the larger balls in half and press into oval shapes. Brush lightly with water and attach to the paws. Attach 3 tiny balls to each paw with a little water.
12. Put the reserved buttercream into a piping bag with a grass nozzle and pipe a ‘tail’ on each bunny.
13. Arrange the sugar eggs on the cupcakes.
14. Roll out the sugarpaste trimmings separately on a surface dusted with icing sugar and cut out flowers (as in the photo) and place on the cupcakes.
