Interesting facts about Abraham Lincoln Abraham Lincoln is among the most revered figures in American history. Born in Kentucky on February 12, 1809, Lincoln served as the sixteenth president of the United States from 1861 until his assassination in 1865. Lincoln was president during the American Civil War, when he led the Union to victory over the Confederacy, an outcome which resulted in the end of slavery in the United States. Though Lincoln’s role during the American Civil War is well-known, there’s much

more to the man dubbed “Honest Abe.” • Abraham Lincoln was sixfoot-four, and that size perhaps contributed to one of the more unique honors that was bestowed upon him, albeit posthumously. As a young man, Lincoln was known for his wrestling skills, and the National Wrestling Hall of Fame notes he suffered just a single recorded defeat in a dozen-year period. That skill and record is why the NWHOF enshrined him in 1992.

• The United States Secret Service performs many functions, but none is more widely recognized than the agency’s role in protecting American political leaders and their families. In a curious twist, the Secret Service was officially established by President Lincoln on April 14, 1865, just hours before he was fatally shot at Ford’s Theatre in Washington, D.C. Lincoln fell into a coma after being shot, and died the next morning. • That Lincoln established an organization that would be

tasked with protecting political leaders on the day he was assassinated was not the only odd coincidence to affect the president and his family. Though the precise timeline is uncertain, actor Edwin Booth saved Abraham Lincoln’s son, Robert Todd Lincoln, when the latter accidentally fell onto train tracks in Jersey City, New Jersey. Booth pulled the president’s son up by the coat collar before he could be crushed by a departing train. Despite his act of heroism, Edwin Booth has been overshadowed by his brother, John Wilkes Booth, a

fellow actor and the man now remembered as Abraham Lincoln’s assassin. • The Lincoln Bedroom is among the more notable rooms in the White House. However, unless he dozed off at his desk, Lincoln never actually slept in the room that bears his name. According to the White House Historical Association, Lincoln used the room as his office and Cabinet Room. In fact, the WHHA notes that the room did not even include the rosewood bed purchased by First Lady Mary Todd Lincoln until it was renovated during the adminis-

tration of Harry S. Truman in the late 1940s and early 1950s. • Perhaps no individual in American history has inspired more written works than Abraham Lincoln. The exact figure is unknown, but the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum estimates that more than 18,000 books have been written about America’s sixteenth president. As Americans celebrate Presidents’ Day this February, they can consider these and many more interesting facts about President Abraham Lincoln.

Americans celebrate Presidents’ Day each year on the third Monday in February. The holiday is known as Washington’s Birthday within the federal government. While it has honored George Washington since it was first established as a holiday in 1879, the day now honors all who served as United States presidents. But that’s not always the case. James K. Polk, who served as the nation’s eleventh president, was the first to retire after one term. Though Polk did not necessarily set a trend, subsequent presidents James Buchanan, Rutherford B. Hayes, Calvin Coolidge, and Harry S. Truman also did not seek a second term. And while Teddy Roosevelt did not seek a second term in 1908, he did in 1912. • Many U.S. presidents came from humble beginnings. Millard Filmore, who served as the thirteenth president between 1850 and 1853, was born into poverty in upstate New York. Filmore became president upon the sudden death of President Zachary Taylor, who died suddenly on July 9. Perhaps his humble origins and unexpected ascendancy to the presidency is why Filmore memorably refused an honorary degree from Oxford University. • One of the more notably named U.S. presidents was not actually given his memorable moniker at birth. According to the National Constitution Center, President Ulysses S. Grant, who was the eighteenth individual to take the office of the president, was actually named Hiram Ulysses Grant. He only became Ulysses S. Grant, a name that clearly stuck, after Congressman Thomas Hamer mistakenly listed his name as “Ulysses S. Grant” upon nominating the young man to attend West Point. • President John F. Kennedy, who served as the thirty-fifth U.S. president until his assassination in November 1963, was the first American president born in the twentieth century. It will likely be awhile before the first U.S. president born in the twenty-first century takes office, as the nation’s current president, Joe Biden, was born just 25 years after JFK.

Yields 8 to 10 servings Nonstick cooking spray, for spraying the baking pan 1 cup granulated sugar 1 cup dark brown sugar 2 teaspoons vanilla extract 1⁄2 teaspoon kosher salt 2 large eggs plus 2 yolks 1 stick (8 tablespoons) unsalted butter, melted 8 ounces semisweet chocolate chips 1⁄2 cup vegetable oil 11⁄4 cups all-purpose flour 1⁄4 cup cocoa powder 1. Preheat the oven to 350 F. Line a 9-by-13-inch baking pan with parchment paper and spray with cooking spray. 2. Combine the granulated sugar, brown sugar, vanilla, salt, whole eggs and yolks in a large bowl; set aside. 3. Melt the butter and chocolate in a double boiler, then whisk together until fully combined. Mix in the vegetable oil. Pour the chocolate mixture into the sugar mixture and mix until fully combined. Fold in the flour and cocoa. 4. Pour the batter into the prepared pan and bake until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean, 30 to 35 minutes. Let cool completely before slicing.

To make the cookies: Pre-

heat the oven to 350 F. Line two large baking sheets with parchment paper or silicone baking mats and set aside. 2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder and salt until well combined. Set aside. 3. In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment or in a large mixing bowl using a handheld mixer, beat the butter and granulated sugar together for 1 to 2 minutes, or until well combined. 4. Mix in the egg and vanilla extract until fully combined, making sure to stop and scrape down the sides of the bowl as needed. 5. Mix in the dry ingredients in two additions, alternating with the sour cream. Make sure to mix in each addition until just combined, and be careful not to overmix the batter. 6. Using a 11⁄2-tablespoon cookie scoop, scoop the cookie dough onto the prepared baking sheets, making sure to leave a little room between each one.

7. Bake for 14 to 16 minutes, or until the tops of the cookies are set and spring back when touched lightly. Remove from the oven, and allow to cool on the baking sheets for 10 minutes, then carefully transfer the cookies to a wire rack to cool completely. 8. To make the vanilla buttercream frosting: In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the whisk attachment or in a large mixing bowl using a handheld mixer, beat the butter for 1 to 2 minutes, or until smooth. Add the powdered sugar, 1⁄2 cup at a time, mixing in each addition until well combined. 9. Add the heavy whipping cream, vanilla extract, and gel food coloring (if using), and continue mixing until fully combined. 10. Once the cookies have cooled completely, spread the frosting on top of the cookies. 11. Store the cookies in an airtight container at room temperature or in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
