A ten-week series of Caregiver Workshops for Sheridan area caregivers concluded in November. The workshops ranged from Role Reversal and Legal Considerations to Understanding and Accessing Veterans Benefits and other important caregiver topics. We would like to thank Holy Name Church for hosting the workshops, AARP for the generous grant, and the many volunteers who helped. We appreciated the expertise of our presenters: Senator Dave Kinskey, Attorney-at-Law; Shelly Born, owner of Devoted to Home; Brenna Miller with Big Horn Rehabilitation and Care Center; Jeff Pederson, former owner of SYNERGY HomeCare; Greg Marshall, CPA; Dr. Greg Marino, Deacon at Holy Name Catholic Church; Father Glenn Whewell, Pastor of Holy Name Catholic Church; Harry Bohling with Kane Funeral Home; and Curt Merriam with the VA Medical Center. Ten caregivers and former caregivers provided inspiring and insightful stories about their personal experiences caring for loved ones. Our amazing respite care volunteers who enabled our caregivers to participate in the workshops were Shannon Pederson, Laurel Rogers, Candi Crist, Amy Wyatt, and Donna Bullick. Angel Yager provided homecooked meals that created a nourishing family environment and were appreciated by all. The dinner sponsors were AARP Wyoming, John & Susan Bigelow, Clarence & Stella Montano, Jeff & Shannon Pederson, Cindy Purcella and her parents, Donna Lecholat, Susie Garber-Johnson, Bill & Bobbie Husted, Matt & Mandolyn Meyer with Hospital Pharmacy West, SYNERGY HomeCare, VFW Auxiliary, and Kaleb Yager & friends. The Care for Caregiver Committee members (Susan Bigelow, Stella Montano, Jeff Pederson, Joan Ligocki, and Angel Yager) are preparing for the next workshop series which will be held in fall 2024. 10 New Year’s Eve party pointers

Many people consider New Year’s Day the unofficial end of the holiday season. That often means that New Year’s Eve is an opportunity to socialize, gather and party one final time before returning to the routines of daily life. The first known instance of New Year’s celebrations can be traced to around 2,000 B.C. in the region of Mesopotamia. Celebrants were gathering in March, rather than January, as this was the time of the vernal equinox, when the darkness of winter subsided and agricultural life could begin anew. As individuals count down the days until New Year’s Eve festivities, these planning tips can make the celebrations occasions to remember. 1. Consider a theme. Everyone who is anyone is having or attending a NYE party. Let your event stand out from the throngs of others with a theme. Guests can come dressed as dynamic duos (like Mario and Luigi) or the party can evoke a bygone era, such as the roaring 1920s. Let guests know what they can do to play the part. 2. Start late. You do not want guests wiped out by the time midnight arrives. Therefore, start the party at around 9 or 10 p.m. and anticipate it lasting into the wee hours of the morning. 3. Tailor drinks to the season. Utilize seasonal ingredients when crafting drinks, or serve drinks that are expected this time of year, such as a boozy eggnog or cranberry Moscow mules. 4. Provide various activities. Plan fun activities during the party. Offer card games or board games to give guests something to do. Karaoke or group activities like trivia also can spread out the fun. 5. Beverages should be accessible. Unless you are hiring a bartender who will be on call to pour drinks, having drinks ready to go is a smart idea. In addition to cans/bottles of beer or malt beverages, have ready-to-go mixed drinks available by selecting a signature drink and preparing a bulk batch. 6. Curate a winning playlist. Ask guests to submit a list of their favorite tunes so you can create a collection of songs that will ebb and flow with the evening’s events. Be sure to include some sing-a-long favorites like “Don’t Stop Believin’” or “Tiny Dancer.” 7. Offer self-serve foods. Much like having drinks ready to go, make foods accessible as well. Mise en place your life “Mise en place” is French for “put in place.” It is used in the kitchen to refer to preparing and setting out all ingredients needed in a recipe. The same concept can be used elsewhere. Lay out clothing on the dresser for the next day at work or school. Prep the foyer of a home with items you need, like an umbrella, shoes and paperwork. Organize backpacks so they’re ready for the school day. Establish a to-go bag at work for items that need to be brought home. Cooking at home enables anyone to customize ingredients and gain control of the foods they eat. Too often commercially processed items are contain ingredients that compromise consumers’ overall health. This recipe for “Lemon Poppy Seed Pound Cake” is made from pantry staples. Whether baking alone or with the family, try this recipe, courtesy of “The Pampered Chef® Stoneware Inspirations” (The Pampered Chef®, Ltd). Lemon Poppy Seed Pound Cake Makes 1 cake or 6 mini pound cakes 11⁄2 cups all-purpose flour 11⁄2 cups granulated sugar 2 tablespoons lemon zest 2 tablespoons poppy seeds 1 teaspoon baking powder 1⁄2 teaspoon salt

3⁄4 cup (11⁄2 sticks) butter, softened (do not substitute margarine) 4 ounces cream cheese, softened 4 eggs 2 tablespoons milk 1 teaspoon Pantry Double Strength Vanilla Powdered sugar (optional) 1. Preheat oven to 325 F. Spray Stoneware Fluted Pan with nonstick cooking spray. Combine flour, granulated sugar, lemon zest, poppy seeds, baking powder, and salt in a stainless, two-quart mixing bowl; mix well. In a stainless four-quart mixing bowl, beat butter and cream cheese on high speed of handheld mixer for 1 minute, or until blended (mixture will form a stiff paste). 2. In a small batter bowl, whisk eggs, milk and vanilla until blended. Add egg mixture to cream cheese mixture in four additions,

beating 2 minutes after each addition. (Do not undermix). 3. Pour batter into pan. Bake 55 to 60 minutes or until cake tester inserted near the center comes out clean. Cool cake in pan 10 minutes. Loosen cake from sides of pan; carefully invert onto a stackable cooking rack, keeping pan over cake. Cool completely. 4. Place cake on serving platter. Sprinkle with powdered sugar or prepare glaze, if desired. For glaze: Combine 11⁄2 cups powdered sugar and enough lemon juice to make a thick frosting. Spread glaze over top of cake.
