Livestreaming Sports: • Be a pivotal part of Sheridan Media’s aggressive 2-person sports team that is taking it to the next level by actively participating in the live streaming of local High School sporting events. 6. Facts about Three Kings Day January 6 marks the close of the Christmas celebration for many Christians. On this day, known as the Epiphany or Three Kings Day, people celebrate the visit of the magi to the Christ child. While some people are very familiar with this feast day and the customs surrounding it, others are less so. Here are some facts about Three Kings Day. • Three Kings Day also goes by the names Little Christmas, Denha, Theophany, Día de los Reyes, and the Baptism of Jesus. • The Epiphany marks the twelfth day of Christmas, falling 12 days after December 25. • It is customary for some celebrants to bake ring-shaped cakes and hide a plastic baby figurine representing the baby Jesus inside. In Latin cultures, the cake is known as Rosca de Reyes, or “The King’s Ring.” • The Bible does not specifically mention the number or names of the magi who visited Jesus. However, oral tradition has it that there were three and their names were Gaspar, Balthasar and Melchior. • The gifts given to Christ were gold, frankincense oil and the resin myrrh. The gifts are symbolic of Jesus’s importance. The gold represents his royal standing, frankincense his divine birth and myrrh his mortality. • Children may leave their shoes out on the Epiphany for presents, similar to they way stockings are hung. The shoes are filled with hay or treats for the Three Wise Men’s camels. In exchange, candies and toys are left for the children. • Three Kings Day is one of the most significant religious holidays in Latin America, where the magi are more prominent figures than Santa Claus. • In Britain and elsewhere, Twelfth Night is the evening that precedes the Epiphany, and Christmas decorations should remain up until then. Also, until as recently as the 1950s, Twelfth Night was a time for wassailing. Wassailers went house to house singing and wishing neighbors good health. • Until the 19th century, the Epiphany was more important than Christmas Day. • Roast lamb was traditionally served on the Epiphany. Here’s a look at some that helped to shape the world in December 1923. • The Gleno Dam bursts in the Province of Bergamo in the Lombardy region of Italy on December 1. More than 350 people are swept away and killed in the villages of Bueggio, Corna and Dezzo. • Universal Pictures releases the film “The Darling of New York” on December 3. The film is the first to feature five-year-old Peggy-Jean Montgomery, also known as “Baby Peggy,” who would soon be earning an annual salary of $1.5 million. • Charles Keating is born on December 4 in Cincinnati, Ohio. Keating would ultimately become one of the more infamous figures in American finance when he plays a prominent role in the savings and loan crisis of 1989. • Kentucky Governor Edwin P. Murrow commutes the death sentence of convicted murderer Steve McQueen on December 5. McQueen was a juvenile at the time of the crime and Governor Murrow had received numerous requests to commute the sentence, which he did just days before his term as governor was due to end. • On December 6, Winston
Churchill is defeated in his attempt to be elected representative of Leicester West in a general election. • The Reichstag of the Weimar Republic votes to pass an enabling act on December 8. The act, which garners 313 votes to just 18 dissents, gives Chancellor Wilhelm Marx the power to implement emergency economic and welfare measures. The act lasted until the dissolution of the Reichstag in March 1924. • The National Dairy Products Corporation, which would ultimately become a conglomerate now known as Kraft Heinz, is founded on December 10. • A 5.3 magnitude earthquake strikes near the Colombia-Ecuador border on December 14. More than 300 people are killed and the Colombian village of Cumbal is destroyed. • The Liberal Party of Greek Prime Minister Stylianos Gonatas wins control of the parliament on December 16. Gonatas’ party ran on a platform of abolishing the monarchy. • James D. Cummings and J. Earl McLeod of Washington, Kansas, file a patent application for their invention, the bulldozer, on December 18. The patent is granted on January 6, 1925. • On December 18, American congressman Andrew Volstead tells a law enforcement conference in Minnesota that the American people were giving up their opposition to the Volstead
Act, which established the prohibition of alcoholic beverages. In his remarks, Volstead predicts the act will never be repealed. • King George II of Greece and Queen Consort Elisabeth leave the country on December 19. Their departure is in compliance with the Greek government, which abolishes the monarchy three months later. • Nine farms in Goodhue County, Minnesota, receive electricity for the first time on December 24. The delivery of electricity is part of a project to demonstrate the economic feasibility of rural electrification in the United States. • On December 24 in Wash-
ington, D.C., United States President Calvin Coolidge presses a button and turns on 2,500 electric bulbs, thus beginning the tradition of the National Christmas Tree. • Prince Regent Hirohito of Japan survives an assassination attempt on December 27. The perpetrator, 24-year-old student Daisuke Namba, is the son of parliament member Sakunoshin Nanda. Namba is hanged on November 15, 1924. • The first patent application for Russian-born American inventor Vladimir Zworkin’s “Television System” is filed on December 29. The patent is eventually granted on December 20, 1938.

Christmas stocking decorating tips and tricks Hanging Christmas stockings is just one of the many traditions that fill the days leading up to Christmas. One theory regarding the origins of stockings says the tradition began when a poor widower who had three daughters worried over having enoåwho had hung their stockings by the fireplace to dry, woke up to find solid gold spheres inside. This legend suggests kindly St. Nicholas visited the home in the night and left the presents, helping ensure the daughters could marry well, after all. Christmas stockings were the first
places where gifts were stowed, before under the boughs of Christmas trees became the primary spot for placing gifts. Then stockings were secondary vessels reserved for small trinkets. Today stockings are largely Christmas decorations rather than places to place gifts. Still, they’re a key component of holiday magic. When including stockings in holiday festivities, follow these tips for whimsy and more. • Utilize stocking holders. Stocking holders are either metal or wooden devices that are placed on mantels. Hooks on the holders suspend the stockings. Just be sure the holders are sturdy enough to handle the weight of a stuffed stocking if you plan on filling it with goodies. • Determine your style. There are Christmas stockings that coordinate to just about any interior design style. From farmhouse to modern to traditional, choose one that fits with your aesthetic. That isn’t to say you can’t mix and match stockings if you prefer a more eclectic, homespun feel. • Enhance your stocking look. If stockings are strictly decorative, enhance their look with a few tricks. First, use tissue paper or balled up shopping bags to stuff the stockings and give them shape. Fill a small baggie with sand or florist glass and place in the heel of the stocking to balance it out and prevent the stocking from blowing around in the breeze. • No fireplace; no problem. Stockings are traditionally hung from the fireplace mantel, but if you don’t have a fireplace there is no need to fret. Simply use ribbons to hang them from the bannister of a staircase, or hang stockings right on walls with removable hooks, or from sturdy shelves. You also can think creatively and hang larger stockings on a door like you might a wreath. Whether they’re decorative or functional, stockings can be an integral component of holiday decor in a home.
