Environmental Education

Community

• Eco education is built into the timetable for Years 3-5; their pupil-led research includes topics from endangered species and tropical reefs to Amazing Africa and our Carbon Footprint • Pre-Prep Outdoor Learning and Junior Forest School • Junior trips to wildlife parks • Live invertebrates in science • Weekly Saturday Morning Eco Club • Our Science curriculum includes topics about ecology, food chains, fossil fuels etc. • Geography study of climate change • Switch off for Sustainability’ Day

• Friends projects to develop areas of the school including the pond, working with Knight Frank and Burden’s Garden Services • School excursions to the beach to litterpick. Children are encouraged to pick up any rubbish at school • Raised money for charities including the Sherborne Community Kitchen Raised, TUSK, Dorset Wildlife Trust, the Crisis Homeless Charity, the Kohima Educational Trust • Friends cake sale to raise £500 for Ukraine and £352 for Dorset Wildlife Trust • Bird Box Project with local primary schools and Dorset Wildlife Trust

Biodiversity • The Friends school pond has frequent involvement from all pupils in maintaining and studying the environment • Biodiversity sampling in science • On campus wild meadows • Bug Hotels are built by Year 3 and 4

Buildings • LED lights are being rolled out across all classrooms

Food • Meat-free Mondays, vegetarian options available every day • The Catering Team regularly monitor the food waste to ensure they can adjust future quantities where needed • The school holds regular food committee meetings involving the children, and representatives from our Catering Team to discuss the menu options and food waste • Pupils are encouraged not to waste food

Travel • Pupils encouraged to walk or cycle to school • Shared transportation for matches and away games • The school is located two minutes from Sherborne train station

Waste • Paper recycling bins • Staff are encouraged to shred any paper or card they can. • A water bottle initiative across the whole school to remove single-use plastics. Children are asked to bring in their own labelled water bottles. • Reduced plastic use for break time snacks and match teas • A popular Junk Modelling Club held in Enrichment and on Saturday Mornings • Reducing our print • Scrap wood from Design & Technology is used for creative Enrichment projects in Design & Technology and Art • Food Waste Scheme implemented by Catering Team

Procurement • Recycled wood is used in Design & Technology for projects • English Fiction books are brought in second-hand • A second-hand school uniform shop is run by parent volunteers

Water • Infra-red taps automatically switch off

Energy • All staff and pupils are encouraged to switch off lights, boards or computers not being used
