BEYOND THE CLASSROOM
CO-CURRICULAR GUIDE TO BUILDING CHARACTER

BEYOND THE CLASSROOM
We are often asked what makes the greatest difference in a pupil’s education. Academic results matter, of course, but many of the qualities that enable girls to flourish as young women are not developed in the classroom. We believe the building blocks to developing good character happen as much outside the classroom as they do in everyday lessons.
A rich and varied co-curricular programme gives pupils a sense of belonging through shared endeavour be that in a team, a cast, an ensemble or a club. By participating in as wide a variety of activities as possible our pupils can grow curiosity; build empathy and resilience; gain respect and integrity; learn about the importance of service and become socially responsible citizens.
There is so much to choose from and during their time at Sherborne Girls we want girls to seize those opportunities, embrace the challenges and find their passion. Our ‘Beyond the Classroom’ programme aims to provide ambitious and inclusive activities some of which are compulsory and many which are entirely optional.
To help pupils navigate their way through the many choices available we have grouped them under 7 pillars.
ACADEMIC ENRICHMENT
… where curiosity thrives, critical thinking blossoms and intellectual boundaries are stretched.
PERSONAL SKILLS & DEVELOPMENT
… where self-discovery grows, collaboration prospers and life skills are honed.
CREATIVE & PERFORMING ARTS
… where artistic expression fosters empathy, freeing the spirit and feeding the soul.
SPORT,
HEALTH & FITNESS
… where physical activity complements wellbeing, team spirit cultivates respect and a healthy body promotes a healthy soul.
ADVENTURE
& LEADERSHIP
… where horizons are broadened, challenge builds courage and resilience leads to confidence.
COMMUNITY, ENVIRONMENT & OUTREACH
… where care, kindness and compassion foster a culture of service and social responsibility.
HOUSE SPIRIT & FUN
… where camaraderie, trust and integrity build bonds of friendship which are cemented for life!
We are certain that there is something that will inspire and excite every pupil. It is through taking risks and trying new things that they will grow as a person, gaining skills, experience and knowledge along the way that will set them up for a life beyond school and embedding the core virtues of what it means to be a Sherborne girl.
