At the centre, the Archangel Raphael instructs Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden, watched over by the face of God. Surrounding this are dynamic narrative vignettes: the War in Heaven, the Fall of Lucifer, and the triumph of Archangel Michael. Allegorical figures of Sin, Death, and Temptation are worked into the elaborate scrolling borders. The design is framed within acanthus and rope-twist ornamentation in the Neoclassical style.
This example retains its original carved wooden frame under glass Originally exhibited at the 1867 Paris Exposition, the Milton Shield was awarded a gold medal and subsequently acquired by the Victoria and Albert Museum. Elkington produced a small number of electrotype copies for collectors and institutions, making surviving examples rare and highly sought after.
