FOREWORD

We are delighted to present this major auction of Irish and international art, comprising over 250 lots that span more than two centuries of creativity. Bringing together painting, works on paper, and sculpture, the sale reflects the richness and variety of artistic practice from the early nineteenth century to the present day.

Irish art forms the heart of the collection. Nineteenth-century romantic landscapes and finely observed naturalist scenes capture the beauty of Ireland’s countryside and coast. The influence of Impressionism is felt in atmospheric studies of light and colour, while the boldness of twentieth-century modernism is represented in works that explore abstraction, expressionism, and new ways of seeing. Contemporary practice is equally strong, offering collectors a window onto the dynamism of Ireland’s current artistic voice.

The international works add breadth and context, with English and French artists contributing important perspectives. These pieces illuminate the exchanges and affinities that have long linked Irish art with wider European movements, allowing the sale to be read as both national and international in character.

Sculpture holds a distinguished place within this auction, with some 10 works represented. From elegant bronzes to expressive contemporary forms, this strand of the sale highlights the enduring vitality of sculptural practice. Among the most significant contributions is Lot 110: Rory Breslin’s Custom House Keystones –Variations, a complete set of fourteen bronze masks reimagining Edward Smyth’s celebrated carvings for Dublin’s Custom House. At once an homage and a bold contemporary project, Breslin’s Variations stand as one of the most ambitious achievements of modern Irish sculpture.

Together, the 250 works presented here trace a compelling narrative: from Romanticism and naturalism, through Impressionism and Modernism, to the diverse art of today. Each lot has been carefully chosen for its quality and significance, offering collectors an opportunity not only to acquire works of lasting value but also to engage with the continuing story of Irish and international art.

GRACE HENRY

HRHA (1868 - 1953)

Title: Sailing Boats, Chioggia, Venice (C. 1930s)

Medium: Oil on Canvas

Signature: Signed Lower Right

Provenance: Private Collection

Framed

In Sailing Boats at Chioggia Grace Henry captures the colour and animation of sailing vessels plying the waters of the Venetian lagoons. Employing an almost Expressionist technique, she exploits the texture and fluidity of oil paint, to create a vibrant and confident work of art. The boat depicted are not yachts, but fishing boats, some with patchwork sails, and a square-rigged sailing ship. The setting is Chioggia, a fishing port at the southern end of the Venetian lagoon, which Henry visited in the 1920’s and 30’s with her lover, the writer and parliamentarian Stephen Gwynn. Born and raised in Peterhead, Aberdeen, after the death of her father, Emily Grace Mitchell (better known as Grace Henry) studied art at the Blanc Garrins Academy in Brussels and at the Delecluse Academy in Paris. She also studied with Andre Lhote. While her still-lives, figures, portraits and landscapes are accomplished essays in colour and the expressive use of paint, Henry’s landscapes reveal a tendency towards introspection. After spending several years on Achill Island with her husband Paul Henry, where they had settled in 1910, she preferred to return to the companionability of the Dublin art world. Henry eventually separated from her husband, to pursue an independent career. In the 1930’s she travelled extensively on the Continent, painting in a loose Fauvist style. She returned to Dublin in 1939, frequently travelling and working in the West of Ireland. In 1949, she was elected HRHA, and also exhibited in Dublin with the Victor Waddington and Dawson Galleries. A joint retrospective of the work of Paul and Grace Henry was held at the Hugh Lane Gallery in 1991.

DANIEL O’NEILL (1920 - 1974)

Title: My Country (C. 1956)

Medium: Oil on Board

Signature: Signed Lower Right

Provenance: The Dawson Gallery, Dublin, (Framing Label Verso), Where Acquired by the Previous Owner; Christie’s, The Irish Sale, London, May 19, 2000, Lot No. 48; Private Collection Framed

When Daniel O’Neill titled this work ‘My Country’, he was evoking the sense of peace and tranquility he had found in the early 1950;s in Conlig, a village near Bangor in county Down. Born in the city of Belfast, O’Neill had led a peripatetic existence for most of his life, moving between Northern Ireland, London and Dublin. During WWII, he witnessed the bombing of Belfast by the Luftwaffe. In 1949, he travelled to France, absorbing the influence of Georges Rouault, Maurice de Vlaminck and Maurice Utrillo. After spending some years in London, he returned to Ireland, where, along with Gerard Dillon and George Campbell, he became a member of the Ulster Contemporary Group. In the early 1950s, O’Neill moved with his wife and child to Conlig, where Campbell and Dillon were also living. An accomplished painting, My Country dates from a time when O’Neill was enjoying success, with his work being shown in London, New York, Quebec and Dublin. The scene depicted is a pond, part of old lead mine workings at Conlig, with chimneys and buildings below a quarry cliff. On a bluff overlooking the quarry, two white houses stand out, amidst mounds of spoil from the mines. There is some artistic licence taken in depicting the scene; O’Neill has increased the height of the quarry cliff, and also the hills behind, adding a more visually dramatic and Romantic flavour to the painting. The colour and handling of paint reveal the influence of Vlaminck, with dark intense colours adding to the atmosphere of the work. Since O’Neill painted this scene, extensive landscaping and housing development has taken place around the old lead mine works, while the village of Conlig has now become essentially a suburb of Bangor. Born in 1920 in Belfast, O’Neill initially followed his father’s occupation, training as an electrician in the shipyards. He also attended evening classes at the Belfast College of Art, becoming friendly with the painter Gerard Dillon. After the 1941 air raids on Belfast, O’Neill salvaged wood from the destroyed buildings, and experimented with wood-carving. The first exhibition of his paintings was held that same year, at the Mol Gallery in Belfast, and shortly afterwards he was taken on by the Victor Waddington Gallery in Dublin. This provided him with an income, allowing him to paint full time, and to travel. He exhibited at the Waddington Galleries between 1946 and 1955. After his years in Conlig, O’Neill moved back to London. However the success of an exhibition of his work, held at the McClelland Galleries in Belfast in 1970, prompted him to return to Northern Ireland. He died in 1974, aged just 54.

Exhibited: Royal Hibernian Academy, 1884, No. 148; Milmo-Penny Fine Art, Dublin, October 1992

Note: One of Walter Osborne’s most notable works, ‘A Tale of the Sea’ was painted in the same year in Walberswick, when he was with Burke and Nathaniel Hill at the Artist’s Colony there.

Framed

The artist was interested in the challenge of capturing on canvas the effects of a twilight sky, which he does here to great effect. Walberswick attracted many artists to its surrounding countryside and coastline. Burke was in Walberswick in the company of his friend and former student Walter Osborne in 1884 where they were joined by Nathaniel Hill. Among the other Irish artists to paint there were Hone, Purser, Garstin, Kavanagh and O’Kelly.

The View is along the estuary of the River Blyth looking inland from a popular location among the colony known locally as the Skate’s Nose.

DONALD TESKEY RHA (B. 1956)

Title: Ballycastle Bay, Co. Mayo (2021)

Medium: Acrylic on Paper

Signature: Signed and Dated Lower Left; Inscribed Verso

Provenance: Private Collection

Framed

A vivid and atmospheric painting, depicting waves crashing against a rocky coastline, Ballycastle Bay is a classic work by Donald Teskey, capturing the essence of the Mayo coastline after a storm. Laying on paint using brush, palette knife and other implements,Teskey’s skill and sensitivity to colour results in an artwork full of drama and energy. Born in Rathkeale, Co. Limerick in 1956, Teskey studied at the Limerick School of Art from 1974 to 1978. Two years later, his first one-person exhibition was held at the Lincoln Gallery in Dublin. In 1984 he was one of the artists selected by Lucy Lippard for the international touring exhibition Divisions, Crossroads, Turns of Mind. After a decade-long gap, and following an inspirational period at the Ballinglen Arts Foundation, in 1996 Teskey began to focus on rural rather than urban subjects, painting landscapes rather than the human figure. His style of painting became more expressionistic, and in a series of seascapes he conveyed the grandeur and epic qualities of the north Mayo coastline. He has also made painting trips to West Cork. Based in Dublin, Teskey was elected a member of the RHA in 2003 and Aosdána in 2006.

RORY BRESLIN (B. 1963)

Title: Custom House Keystones - Variations (The Original Set of 14 - Liffey, Erne, Foyle, Slaney, Nore, Suir, Lagan, Lee, Shannon, Bann, Atlantic, Blackwater, Barrow and Boyne)

Medium: Bronze

Signature: Each Mask Signed

Provenance: The Artist’s Private Collection, Co. Mayo

Custom House Keystones – Variations

A complete set of fourteen patinated bronze masks, each approx. 88 x 42 cm, cast after the original keystones carved by Edward Smyth (1749–1812) for the Custom House, Dublin, c. 1791.

This exceptional series reimagines one of the great achievements of Irish neoclassical sculpture: the monumental keystones personifying the Atlantic and the principal rivers of Ireland – Bann, Barrow, Blackwater, Boyne, Erne, Foyle, Lagan, Lee, Liffey, Nore, Shannon, Slaney, and Suir.

Smyth’s original carvings, designed under architect James Gandon, embodied the aspirations of an Irish Parliament-era Dublin. Each head is laden with symbolic attributes — maritime emblems, flora, fauna, and produce — evoking the geography, economy, and folklore of its river basin. Breslin’s Variations project captures these qualities with striking fidelity while revealing the energy, texture, and modelling of the originals through the medium of bronze.

The Variations were conceived both as a celebration of Smyth’s artistry and as a demonstration of how these allegorical works remain resonant today. Working from extensive research, including archival photographs of Smyth’s lost wax maquettes (destroyed in 1916), Breslin modelled and cast each head using traditional lost-wax techniques, maintaining the sequence of the Custom House arrangement, beginning with the Liffey. The masks range in expression from the serene classical beauty of the Liffey to the stern force of the Barrow, the jovial Bann, and the undulating wave-born majesty of the Atlantic.

Each approx. 88 x 42 cm.

Literature: A. Crookshank, ‘A Life devoted to Landscape Painting: William Ashford’, Irish Arts Review Yearbook, vol. 11, 1995, P. 130, No. 77

Framed

Depicting a wooded landscape with figures, mountains and ruins, this painting by William Ashford is a classic ‘Claudean’ composition. Beneath a placid sky, the central group—a herdsman, his dog, and a companion—guide cattle and goats along a road. On either side, the sinuous trunks and dark foliage of trees provide a frame for the figures on the road. In the distance, smaller figures can be seen, adding a sense of depth to the composition. A ruined building in the distance—a monastery or abbey—provides a momento mori, or reminder of the passing of ages. Wending their way slowly past a stream, the cattle and goats evoke a pastoral Georgic existence. These elements in Ashford’s paintings are largely derived from the seventeenth century canvases of Claude Lorrain and Salvator Rosa, works that were in turn inspired by Classical ruins in the countryside around Rome. Although the landscape depicted here is an imagined view, the mountain in the distance resembles the Sugarloaf, and so this work may relate to Ashford’s paintings of the Powerscourt estate in Co. Wicklow

A leading painter in late eighteenth and early nineteenth-century Ireland, William Ashford was born in Birmingham. In 1764 he moved to Dublin, where he lived for the next six decades. He was employed in the Ordnance Office in Dublin Castle, a government job that involved inspecting arms and munitions stores around the country. Ashford sketched as he travelled, developing his skills as a topographical artist. However his initial paintings were mainly flower pieces and still lives, and it was not until 1772 that he began to exhibit landscape paintings, at the Society of Artists of Ireland. From then on he became celebrated for his idealised landscapes. The first Earl of Charleville commissioned him to paint a set of five views of Charleville Forest, and he was also commissioned by Richard, seventh Viscount Fitzwilliam to paint six views of Mount Merrion Park in Dublin. Unlike many of the generation that succeeded him, Ashford was neither a revolutionary nor a Romantic painter, but rather one who delighted in depicting peaceful estates and houses. Highly esteemed in his own lifetime, in 1813 he was elected President of the Society of Artists of Ireland, and a decade later became President of the newly-founded Royal Hibernian Academy. He died at his home in Dublin, in 1824.

Exhibited: Frank McKelvey Exhibition, Ulster Museum, Belfast, 4 March - 25 April 1993

Literature: S.B. Kennedy, Frank McKelvey RHA RUA: A Painter in his Time, Irish Academic Press, Blackrock, Co. Dublin, pp. 28 and 36 (illustrated, colour plate No. 14)

Notes: The Old Woman in the work was possibly the model for McKelvey’s prize-winning entry to the Taylor Art Competition in 1918, The Grandmother. Framed

Lot Description: Frank McKelvey’s Tending the Goats is a delicate yet characterful example of his watercolour mastery, capturing the warmth and quiet dignity of rural Irish life. The old woman depicted—hands on hips, observing her goats—was a favoured model in McKelvey’s early 1920s work, believed to be a friend or neighbour from around Bessborough, Co. Armagh, where his inlaws owned a farm. Her presence links this piece to several other key works in his oeuvre, including the celebrated The Potato Gatherers (1922), in which she appears in a strikingly similar pose, as well as Feeding the Hens (1920), where her lined and expressive features are unmistakable. Art historians also suggest she may have been the model for The Grandmother, McKelvey’s prize-winning entry to the Taylor Art Competition in 1918. As such, Tending the Goats is more than a pastoral scene—it is a testament to McKelvey’s intimate connection with his subjects, his skill in rendering character through posture and expression, and his enduring contribution to Irish watercolour painting in the early 20th century.

DILLON RHA RUA (1916 - 1971)

Title: A Flower for my Sweetheart (C. 1960)

Medium: Watercolour, Gouache and Ink on paper

Signature: Signed Lower Left

Provenance: Private Collection

Notes: This work belongs to a series of works by Dillon during his extended visits to Galway and the West of Ireland in the 1960s, focusing on the motif of Pierrot, who acted as an alter ego for the artist. This series included Hole in the Hill (C. 1960), The Unassuming (1967) and Encounter (1968).

Framed

Lot Description: Gerard Dillon’s A Flower for My Sweetheart (1960) is a whimsical yet deeply emotional tableau set in the dreamlike hills of Connemara, a region that served as both sanctuary and inspiration throughout his career. Painted at a time when Dillon was increasingly turning inward—grappling with his identity, health struggles, and a growing sense of detachment from the modern world—the work reflects his retreat into a realm of fantasy and symbolism. At its heart stands a Harlequin, a figure Dillon frequently used as a stand-in for himself: the romantic outsider and masked performer, offering a radiant, sunflowerlike bloom to a still, enigmatic woman. She stands quietly among the rippling green-and-yellow hills, as if she is part of the land itself. The theatrical striping of the fields transforms Connemara into a surreal stage, a place of inner drama and emotional honesty. Overhead, a crimson sky intensifies the tension between joy and melancholy. Painted two years before the death of his beloved brother, this work captures a moment suspended between innocence and sorrow, where love becomes both a gesture of hope and a shield against the encroaching darkness of solitude.

A cloud-filled sky dominates this classic view, by James Humbert Craig, of a landscape in county Donegal. The painting bears an original label, identifying the scene as Gholla Bristha, in the Rosses, County Donegal. An area of great natural beauty on the Donegal coast, “The Rosses” are west of Glenveigh National Park. The coastline in the area is heavily indented, with many islands, the largest being Arranmore. Craig depicts the landscape, where coastline, farmland and island combine, on a bright day where sunlight and rain showers follow in quick succession. Although the foreground, a rocky coastline, is in shadow, sunlight illuminates a colourful patchwork of fields in the middle distance. There is also, beyond the fields, a glimpse of sea. In the distance can be seen the blue mountains of Arranmore. Craig often worked in the area, captivated by the natural beauty of mountains and farmland. A painting by him, entitled Tholla Bristha and depicting a similar scene, is in the Crawford Art Gallery, Cork.

Born in Belfast in 1877, James Humbert Craig was taught painting by his mother Marie Sabine Metzenen (1854-1927), who came from

Lausanne in Switzerland. After working for a time in his father Alexander’s tea importing business, Craig studied at the Belfast School of Art. He was largely a self-taught artist, specialising in depicting landscapes of Donegal, Galway, Mayo, and also the Glens of Antrim, around Cushendun. In 1915 he began showing his work at the RHA, and in 1928 was elected a full member. He also exhibited with the Fine Art Society in London and was a member of the RUA. Craig had little interest in Modernist innovations, and remained a solidly Realist painter—albeit with more than a touch of Impressionism in his atmospheric rendering of landscapes. A memorial exhibition of his work was held at the Belfast Museum in 1945, a year after his death.
