Paul told me he also loves amateur football and travels the country watching games, currently he has been to 500+ grounds in the UK. Paul and his mate got up very early to travel from Chelmsford to Watford Junction then up to Carlisle to watch Hebburn play Workington Town. All this purely as he had met a few lads from Hebburn on his travels and thought he could add Workington town to his list of grounds visited, that’s dedication. Hebburn won 1 nil.
Watching sport is great especially with family and friends. However, I remember my Dad saying to me when I was a young lad, pushing past him to get out the door to catch the bus to Shepherd’s Bush to watch QPR, “that you have many years of watching son and only a limited time to play, so make the most of playing sport whilst you can!” I heeded his advice and I am happy to say that I am still actively playing squash and golf at 67 years young, although I recently had a bit of a dilemma. The mighty Northampton Saints where I have had a season ticket for over 20 years made it to the final after beating the “orrible” Leicester Tigers. Unfortunately I wasn’t there because I opted to travel out to Spain to play golf in a 3 day team event. Whilst it was disappointing not to witness such a terrific game at the Gardens, my Dad’s words still rang true about playing rather than watching, btw, my golf team lost by half a point.

At the time of writing the Shenley Leisure Centre is having a deserved makeover with the front and side of the building being re-painted a stylish grey. Mo, our lovely Reception Manager has also been busy planting annuals in the gardening boxes ready for full bloom by July. Major renovation work is also due to start in July with the refurbishment of the toilets in the main reception area followed by both changing rooms being revamped which is long over due. The World Cup started with good wins for Scotland and England in their opening games and in this record breaking competition there will be more games than ever. So if you are looking to support the home nations or enjoy Spain getting their knock-out matches going or just enjoy football at it’s best? Please come along and watch the action in the Sportsmans Rest on one of our many screens where Erica and the team are ready to serve you with your tipple of choice at very reasonable prices. Finally, I would just like to congratulate the pool team for winning their league and also make special mention to a much valued customer and dart team player Mike McGarry on his early retirement. I hope you have a lovely time mate doing what you want to do. So did it come home?

We enter July with the World Cup in full swing and still hopeful that England can make it to another final. How fitting would it be, 60years since their only World Cup win. On Friday 31 July The Daytrippers band will be celebrating this achievement with a 60th anniversary evening in the Sportsmens Rest. Join us for what hopefully will be a double celebration. st Chris Brown mentioned some projects taking place, the external painting has been completed, and while we wait for the door graphics to be re-applied flowers have been planted. Soon the changng rooms will be having a refurbishment followed by the toilets planned for in August. These works will cause some disruption to services but is a necessary improvement that we have been looking forward to providing for a while. Once completed I’m su he wait

In June we replaced the two old Concept2 rowers in the fitness room with two Concept2 ROWERG machines. Just the start of some improvements we are looking to introduce.
As some clubs wind down for the summer holidays we will be providing a free bouncy castle during the weekends from 11 July until the end of August. Bring the kids for an afternoon of free fun. We look forward to a th visit from former Strictly Come Dancing professional Luba Mushtuk. She’ll be holding her Masterclass on the 11th July. Tickets are available and more details are later in the issue or by calling 01908 502488.
The Sportsmens Rest Pool Team recently won the league. The presentation was held at the end of June and the trophy was brought back to the centre to sit proudly next to the darts one, won last year. Some well deserved food and celebratory drinks followed, well done to the team and everyone involved.

Fitness is fantastic and where better than at your own Shenley Leisure Centre. Your own because Shenley is a charity run by Trustee’s for the community which gives us that status of being a unique and distinctive element. There are no membership contracts to commit you to anything. If you would like to book a free trial lesson you will be very welcome to do so. From the moment you come into the centre you will be charmed by the friendly and professional staff who are always on hand to give any assistance or advice if required.
The fitness class timetable offers an amazing range of activities including muscle building/strengthen, dance based fit steps and dance fit, pilates, zumba, yoga, body tone and workout classes all run by brilliant and experienced instructors, plus there’s a gym and more. The indoor golf Shenley Fairways is an exciting addition to your fabulous Shenley Centre.
Currently many of the fitness classes are attended in the main by lovely female customers and it would be great to see a few more fella’s coming along. You don’t have to worry about having “only two left feet” which is a comment often mentioned by some budding newcomers. Here at Shenley the wonderful instructors are patient and caring, before long you too will be floating across the floor keeping young and fit to the music you danced to in your teenage years on Saturday nights at the Majestic in the 1960’s/1970’s.

One of our highlights has been becoming part of the local community. We enjoy regular visits to St Mary’s church and have built wonderful relationships with residents at the local care home, where the children have taken part in arts and craft activities and delighted the residence with their singing.
Our Buttons have loved helping with the weekly shop at Sainsburys, visiting our local parks, and you may have seen us out on our forest school sessions. These outdoor adventures have allowed them to learn new skills while discovering how to care and protect the environment. Our regular litter-picking sessions have been particularly rewarding, and it has been lovely to see the pride our children take in keeping our local community clean and tidy.
Buttons preschools are now proud owners of our very own minibus, which has enabled us to venture further afield and enjoy some fantastic days out. Recently we visited IKEA for lunch and to do some shopping for our setting, and we are looking forward to our upcoming trip to Willen lake.
Another highlight of the year was our annual visit to Dino land. In the words of our Buttons children- it was “the best day!”. Travelling on a double-decker bus made the adventure even more exciting. The children had a wonderful time exploring the rides, hunting for dinosaurs, feeding the animals and meeting the new lambs.
