I accompanied Chris Passfield to the MK Sports Awards on a cold Friday night in January at Denbigh School. Although Chris and I handed out an award to a deserving lady from Newport Pagnell bowling club, the standout was for a young man. Jack Clayden at the tender age of 16 years old was a boxer and referee and was voted Sports Achiever of 2025, joining Greg Rutherford and Delli Ali as previous winners, so much talent. The event was an inspiring ceremony reflecting the dedication of sports people and their affiliate organisations all of which got me thinking. Sporting clubs have always been important to me and this was highlighted when I attended my school’s memorial lunch to watch Italy beating England in the 6 Nations, the 1st time in 33 attempts. Whilst the result was disappointing I glanced around at 125 gentlemen watching the game (now in tears) who went to my school with the majority playing rugby for the “Old Boys” with some of the ex-players nee legends well into their eighties. I thought, how lucky I had been to have these experiences and friendships since starting secondary school at 11 years old.
I celebrated my birthday a few weeks ago socializing on two separate occasions and both times started the night off in the Sportsman’s Rest. The first night was with my friends from Abbey Hill Golf Club and some of them also now use Shenley Fairways and obviously a great night was had by all, mainly me! The second occasion was with my mates from the Thursday night Boasters squash club which has been running for nearly 30 years at SLC, we had a great evening finishing off the night with a fine curry up City.

I suppose my point is that sport is a great leveler for all age groups and in my case these club activities have not just kept me reasonably healthy but have forged lifelong friendships. So, it was with great pleasure I sat and watched Jack receive his award and think of the friends he will make along his journey. So, remember Shenley Leisure Centre has a wide variety of sporting activities with clubs to match, so if you haven’t made contact yet, now’s the time to take the plunge!

Manager
As we move into spring and towards the summer time we are excited to announce some new activities taking place. A new junior squash coaching session began in March, details are included later, we have our first golf pro coaching session taking place on 11 April in Shenley Fairways in partnership with Abbey Hill. We have a dance ‘Masterclass’ taking place in July with the th former Strictly Come Dancing professional Luba Mushtuk, tickets are available now and more details are also later in the issue. There is also a comedy night scheduled for May in the Sportsmens Rest, more details and tickets for this will be available soon.

Chris Brown talked about the importance of clubs in his editorial, I share his view on this. I will also add as well as being an outlet for people, it’s also a great way for them to feel part of a specific group and in order for people to participate in a club or group they rely on the commitment of the coaches, instructors, teachers and other people behind the scences, some of which are volunteers. A lot of this may go unnoticed but at the 2026 Mayor’s Award in February Jim McGlynn from Harlequins Trampolining Club received Mentor of the Year. Jim has been coaching for 30+ years at Shenley Leisure Centre and was recognised by someone who attends his sessions. Jim was unable to attend the awards evening but collected his award later at the council offices. He is one great example of the many people who would have helped and guided people through a sport or activity.

I’ll finish by saying a quick congratulations to our Duty Manager, Kieran Dugdale and his wife who welcomed twin boys on the 15 December. It’s not often we have staff newborns arrive and I’m pleased to announce the twins are doing great and the new parents are adjusting nicely. th
