Fall always seems to arrive before we're quite finished with summer. There are still events on the calendar and visitors exploring Mason County, but conversations are already shifting toward budgets, priorities, and plans for the year ahead. The Chamber is doing much the same. This is the time of year when we begin looking closely at what comes next. What are businesses experiencing? Where are the opportunities? What challenges need our attention? And, importantly, who needs to be part of those conversations? Those questions extend well beyond our office. This fall brings regional gatherings like the Future of Work Summit and Regional Economic Forecast & Innovation Expo, where employers and community leaders will examine trends affecting our workforce and economy. Later this month, I'll join Chamber executives from across the West for the Western Association of Chamber Executives board meeting. Some of the most valuable time at these gatherings is spent comparing notes, sharing ideas, and learning what's working in other communities. I always return with new perspectives, along with a greater appreciation for the work happening here at home. That exchange of ideas is important because no organization or community has all the answers. The Chamber's role as a Catalyst for business growth, a Convener of leaders and influencers, and a Champion for a strong community depends on bringing people together, listening to different perspectives, and turning good ideas into action.

You'll see plenty of examples of that work throughout this issue. Major investments are underway at Little Creek Casino Resort and Hood Canal School. Staircase has reopened to visitors, creating renewed opportunities for businesses that depend on recreation and tourism. OysterFest will soon bring thousands of people together, while Eat Local Month gives us another reason to explore the restaurants and food producers that contribute to our local economy. These stories are different, but each reflects people investing time, resources, and energy into Mason County. There are opportunities for you to be part of what comes next, too. Chamber Board nominations will open soon, and we welcome members who are interested in serving on the Board or one of our committees. You don't need years of experience to contribute. We need people willing to bring their perspective, ask questions, share expertise, and help us think about what's ahead. The same is true throughout our community. With an election approaching, this is an important time to learn about the candidates and issues that will shape local decisions. Annual Awards nominations are also open, giving us an opportunity to recognize businesses, organizations, and individuals whose leadership and service deserve to be celebrated. Planning for the future doesn't mean overlooking what's happening today. It means paying attention to both. As we head into fall, I encourage you to stay informed, get involved where you can, and consider where your experience might make a difference. There is plenty of good work underway in Mason County, and plenty more ahead.
Comments from the CHair Jacqualine Case In Concrete Construction Each January, the Shelton-Mason County Chamber of Commerce hosts its Annual Gala, an evening dedicated to celebrating the people and organizations who strengthen our local economy and enrich the fabric of Mason County. It is one of the most anticipated events of the year, and its significance extends far beyond the celebration itself. The Gala Awards highlight leadership, innovation, service, and community commitment—recognizing those who invest their time, talent, and resources to make Mason County a place where businesses thrive and families flourish. As we prepare for the upcoming Gala, nominations are now open through September 30. I encourage all Chamber members to take part in this important process. The nomination form and award descriptions are available on the Chamber website, and submitting a nomination takes only a few moments. Yet the impact of that nomination can be lasting, both for the honoree and for our community. These awards matter because they reflect the collective voice of our membership. NOVEMBER 3 ELECTION WILL SHAPE POLICY CLOSE TO HOME Mason County voters will have plenty to consider in the November 3 General Election, with races for local, county, utility, and state offices, along with measures that will shape our communities in the years ahead.

presents a different question: whether to increase that dedicated investment by an additional one-tenth of one percent. The existing TBD and its 0.2% tax will remain in place regardless of the outcome.
In the seven-way primary for Mason County Commissioner District 3, Miguel Gutierrez and George Blush advanced with 39.66% and 17.02% of the vote, respectively. The winner will succeed Commissioner Sharon Trask.
That said, we are not political action committees and do not endorse candidates; we are independent organizations led by the private sector.
After the election, attention turns to the 2027 legislative session. The Chamber will again partner with the North Mason Chamber and MasonEDC for a Legislative Sendoff, bringing Mason County’s state legislators together with the business community to discuss priorities and emerging issues before lawmakers return to Olympia for the 105-day long session.
The Chamber will host a candidate forum this fall featuring candidates for County Commissioner, Mason PUD 3 Commissioner, and the two State Representative seats serving the 35th Legislative District. Our forums focus on policymaking positions with direct influence over issues ranging from infrastructure and utilities to land use, taxation, and economic development.
Shelton voters will also consider increasing the City’s Transportation Benefit District sales tax. Voters renewed the existing 0.2% tax for another 10 years in 2025; this November, the City is asking voters to increase the rate to 0.3%. The additional revenue is restricted to transportation improvements and would help reduce General Fund dollars currently supporting the Street Fund.

Bauer Puts Bauer Puts People, People, Experience Experience at at Center Center Stage Stage As one of Mason County’s largest employers and most recognizable destinations, Little Creek Casino Resort has long had an impact that extends beyond the gaming floor. With Jef Bauer now at the helm, the resort is looking to build on that reach by investing in its workforce, enhancing the guest experience, and introducing Little Creek to new audiences.
“That clearly has meant something to a lot of people and their families, not just the Tribe,” Bauer said. “There’s a great feeling and there’s a foundation for me to build on.” Little Creek is one of Mason County’s five largest employers, and Bauer estimates the resort currently employs about 620 team members. Investing in those employees is among his priorities, from workplace improvements to training and opportunities for advancement.
Bauer sees entertainment as an opportunity to introduce Little Creek to new audiences, including guests who may come for a concert or overnight stay rather than the casino floor. The arcade and family-friendly offerings provide additional reasons to experience the resort.
“If you subscribe to the philosophy that you take care of the team first and they take care of the guests better, that’s what we’re doing,” Bauer said. Professional development is another focus. Bauer describes mentoring as one of the most important parts of his job. Little Creek is also placing renewed emphasis on the Squaxin Island Tribe Leadership Apprenticeship Program, designed to prepare tribal members for leadership roles. Bauer joined Little Creek earlier this year with more than 30 years of leadership experience in gaming, hospitality, entertainment, and resort operations. Much of his career has been spent working with tribal gaming enterprises, and his return to that environment was intentional. After learning more about the Squaxin Island Tribe and Little Creek, Bauer said he was impressed by both the property and the organization behind it. “I quickly saw how progressive and successful they had been, and I wanted to be part of it,” he said. Bauer found plenty to build on. He points to a strong casino floor and hotel, along with amenities including Seven Inlets Spa and Salish Cliffs Golf Club. He was also struck by the longevity of Little Creek’s workforce. Five team members have been there since the resort’s earliest days, he said, with many more marking 20 or 25 years on the job.
Guests will see investments throughout the property as well. An expanded fitness room with new equipment is opening this month, while a new arcade on the boardwalk is expected to open in November. Plans also include improvements to food service and kitchen equipment, along with updates to the Skookum Creek Event Center that will make it possible to host concerts more frequently.
That ability to draw visitors also creates opportunities beyond Little Creek. Bauer is interested in partnerships that connect resort customers with other local businesses, building on relationships he has seen work successfully in other markets. “Our best customers can end up being their best customers,” Bauer said. The same collaborative approach extends to workforce development. Bauer is interested in partnerships with schools and training programs that can create pathways into careers at Little Creek, particularly in hospitality fields where employers compete for skilled workers. Looking ahead, Bauer expects one of the most noticeable changes to be how Little Creek presents itself. He anticipates a stronger and more visible brand designed to distinguish the resort and introduce it to more potential guests. “You will see Little Creek everywhere,” Bauer said. For one of Mason County’s largest employers and destinations, that broader reach has the potential to bring new visitors, partnerships, and opportunities into the community. Business Matters - Page 5

September has been proclaimed Eat Local Month in Washington, recognizing the farmers, fishers, food producers, and food artisans who provide fresh, healthy, and sustainably produced food to communities across the state. The 2026 proclamation also recognizes the longstanding role of Tribal fisheries, which continue to provide nourishment, support local economies, and preserve cultural traditions. In Mason County, eating local is something residents and visitors can experience throughout the community. The Shelton Farmers Market runs every Saturday from 10:00a-3:00p, May through October, offering an opportunity to shop directly from local growers and producers. The county is also home to other markets, farm stands, and local food producers, giving people more ways to find food grown, raised, harvested, or produced close to home. Part of what makes buying local food meaningful is knowing where it came from and having a connection to the people who produced it.
There is something different about buying a product from someone who can tell you where it was grown, raised, harvested, or made. Eat Local Month provides an opportunity to make those connections and to pay a little more attention to the people behind the food we bring home. That connection matters to the local economy, too. Mason County’s food community includes growers, farmers, shellfish producers, fishers, restaurants, markets, farm stands, and other small businesses. Supporting those businesses means supporting the people working in our community and recognizing the many different businesses that play a part in getting food from the farm or water to the table. For the Chamber, Eat Local Month is also a reminder that supporting local businesses does not always have to be complicated. Choosing a locally produced item at the farmers market, buying from a farm stand, picking up local seafood, or choosing a locally owned restaurant are all ways to support businesses in our community.
Washington’s proclamation recognizes that supporting local agriculture, fisheries, and food production can help strengthen the economy, support food security, preserve farmland and fishing waters, and reduce environmental impacts. But at the community level, it can also be about something much simpler: knowing the people and places behind the food we eat. This September, take a closer look at what is available close to home. Visit the Shelton Farmers Market on a Saturday, stop at a local farm stand, seek out local seafood, or ask a food business about the products and ingredients they use. Eat Local Month is a chance to celebrate the people who grow, raise, harvest, and make our food, while choosing to support the local businesses that help keep those connections close to home. A great local restaurant can become more than a place to grab a meal. It can be where friends meet after work, families celebrate milestones, and a regular Wednesday night turns into a memorable evening. That sense of connection is what Jim and Nikki hoped to create when they opened Wilde Irish Pub in downtown Shelton. From the beginning, their vision was to build a welcoming gathering place centered around good food, handcrafted drinks, Irish hospitality, and plenty of personality. Shelton is home for both of them, and creating a place where people could walk through the door and feel welcome was an important part of what they wanted Wilde to be. That connection continues to shape the way Jim and Nikki approach owning a business in Shelton. The pub employs local people, celebrates the talents of its team, and welcomes familiar faces through its doors. For the owners, being part of the local business community also means having the opportunity to invest in the community that has supported them. The menu at Wilde offers a mix of Irish favorites, seafood, and other dishes made with care. Seafood options include shrimp, scallops, and salmon, while fresh lobster bisque and homemade lobster eggrolls offer something a little different. Guests can also enjoy hearty shareable boards, handcrafted cocktails and mocktails, rotating desserts, and seasonal creations. Weekend breakfast and brunch gives guests another reason to visit. Wilde serves brunch Saturday and Sunday from 8:00a to noon, offering familiar breakfast favorites and drinks to start the weekend. When the weather cooperates, guests can also enjoy the pub’s rooftop patio, while their iconic Alibi Room provides space for gatherings. Special events and new menu offerings throughout the year give guests even more reasons to return.
Jim and Nikki enjoy providing a place where local organizations and community members can gather. That involvement has brought recognition from the community as well. Wilde was honored with the Chamber’s Rookie of the Year award in 2023, recognizing the business and its early contributions to the local business community. More recently, the pub took home the Golden Fork at the 2026 Expo & Bite of Mason County. For the Wilde team, the award was especially meaningful because it came from the community they serve and recognized the hard work and creativity that goes into their food. Local restaurants play an important role in the communities where they operate.
Wilde is proud of the team it has built and the atmosphere it has created. Whether guests are stopping in for dinner, meeting friends for drinks, enjoying weekend brunch, or celebrating a special occasion, the goal remains the same: to make everyone who walks through the door feel welcome. As Wilde continues to be part of Shelton’s downtown business community, the pub remains focused on good food, Irish hospitality, and creating a place where people want to gather. With seasonal creations, new menu offerings, weekend brunch, the rooftop patio, and the Alibi Room, there are plenty of ways to experience what Wilde has to offer while supporting a locally owned business in the community it calls home.
Restaurants create jobs, support local families, and contribute to the local economy, but they also give people a place to meet, celebrate, reconnect, or simply enjoy a meal after a long day. They become part of the everyday life of a community and help give a town its character.
Wilde has also become involved in the local business community through community events, charitable causes, and efforts to promote other local businesses.
For Wilde, that means being a locally owned restaurant is about more than serving food. A meal purchased from a local restaurant helps support employees, families, vendors, community events, and other local businesses. Keeping more dollars in Mason County helps support the people and businesses that make up the community.

That partnership extends to several elements of the project, including the school’s water system, the Reservation Road trail, the use of Skokomish timber, artwork, and other design elements. The district will connect to the Tribe’s expanded water system, which is expected to save more than $300,000 in infrastructure costs.

Created and hosted by the Skookum Rotary Club, OysterFest celebrates the shellfish industry that has long been part of Mason County. It is Washington State’s official seafood festival and home to the West Coast Oyster Shucking Championships. In 2025, approximately 12,000 people attended, with visitors coming from throughout Washington as well as more than 10 other states and Canada. About half of the approximately 2,000 online tickets sold went to people living more than 50 miles away. For many of those visitors, OysterFest is more than a day trip. On-site camping brings groups from across Washington and from states including Oregon, California, Arizona and Colorado. Groups return year after year for reunions, with some arriving as early as Wednesday and staying through Monday morning. During that time, visitors are spending money on restaurants, groceries, gas, shopping and other local businesses. Organizers estimate that at least $200,000 comes into the community through this spending, separate from the money raised by participating nonprofits. That fundraising is another important part of the festival. Every food vendor at OysterFest must be a nonprofit serving Mason County, giving local organizations an opportunity to raise money for their work throughout the coming year. Scouting troops, schools, churches, youth groups, and service clubs have all benefited from the opportunity. Visitors can enjoy food from local organizations while knowing their purchases help support groups working in the community. There is plenty to keep visitors around throughout the weekend, including the oyster shucking championships, live music, a beer garden, food vendors, exhibitors, and family activities. The festival also gives visitors a chance to learn more about

A DAY ON THE COURSE Chamber Annual Chamber Annual Golf Golf Tournament Tournament A sunny Friday at Alderbrook Golf & Yacht Club made for a great day on the course as Chamber members and local businesses came together for the 16th Annual Chamber Golf Tournament on August 21. With teams spread across the course, the day included plenty of friendly competition and time to catch up with fellow Chamber members. The tournament included a best ball competition along with several course contests throughout the day. Teams also had the opportunity to use tournament enhancements as they made their way around the course, adding some extra strategy to the game. Our Community Credit Union took first place, with Phil Prothero, Mark Nault, Dale Jordway, and Ace Moran making up the winning team. Nelly’s Ark, represented by Nelly and Tony Schaap, Pam Shaffer, and Mark Mansfield, finished second, while Island Enterprises, Inc. took third with Heidi and Brad McCutcheon, Noel Rubadue, and Danny Snyder. Players also competed in several individual contests throughout the tournament. Rick Endicott of Team Salmon Center won the men’s closest to the pin, while Pam Shaffer of Nelly’s Ark took the women’s closest to the pin. Ace Moran of the Our Community Credit Union team won the men’s closest to the line, and Asia Cline of the Mason PUD 3 team won the women’s closest to the line. The Ping Pong Drive on Hole #1 gave players another chance to compete for a prize. For $5 per try, golfers hit ping pong balls down the fairway, with the player whose ball traveled the farthest by the end of the day taking home half of the pot. Jacob From of the Builders FirstSource team won the competition and took home more than $100. The funds raised through the tournament underwrite the costs associated with various Chamber partnerships and educational opportunities.

Staircase welcomes Staircase welcomes visitors again visitors again After more than a year of closure, the Staircase developed area of Olympic National Park reopened to visitors on July 8, along with Forest Service Road 24 and several recreation sites around Lake Cushman. The area had been closed since the Bear Gulch Fire ignited in the Olympic National Forest on July 6, 2025. Since reopening, visitors have been accessing Staircase Campground, the Staircase Ranger Station, Rapids Loop Trail, Mt. Rose Trail, Mildred Lakes Trail, Dry Creek East Trailhead, and dayuse sites along Lake Cushman. Some areas remain closed while crews continue hazard assessments and repairs, including wilderness trails beyond the developed area, FS-2451, and the Copper Creek Trail. The reopening followed months of work to stabilize roads, clear drainage infrastructure, repair trails, remove hazard trees, and address other safety concerns. Restoration work is continuing, and visitors are reminded that burned areas may still contain falling trees, loose rocks, unstable ground, stump holes, and other hazards. With Staircase open again, visitors are once again able to experience an area that has meant so much to the community, while seeing the ongoing recovery from the Bear Gulch Fire firsthand. As restoration work continues, the reopening marks an important step in bringing visitors back to this part of Olympic National Park.

Meet Darren Eisele
CHAMBER AMBASSADOR
Darren Eisele first joined the Chamber’s Ambassador Committee in 2014 and served in the role for five years. After taking a break, he was excited to return to the Ambassador program in 2026. As Customer Experience & Marketing Director for Hood Canal Communications, Darren has spent years building relationships throughout Mason County. Helping people feel welcome and connecting them with the right people and resources comes naturally to him, which made returning to the Ambassador program an easy decision. Darren enjoys helping people find the businesses, resources, and individuals they need, whether someone is starting a business, looking for a service, or trying to solve a challenge. He knows there is a wealth of knowledge and experience within the local business community, and he enjoys helping people make those connections. “Whether someone is starting a business, looking for a service, or trying to solve a challenge, there’s often someone within our Chamber network who can help.
I love seeing what can happen when people come together and share ideas, resources, and support.” Darren stays connected by attending Chamber luncheons, Business After Hours, the Expo & Bite of Mason County, and other community events throughout the year. While those events provide plenty of opportunities to meet people, he has found that some of the most valuable connections come from relationships that develop over time. Through the Chamber, he has built a network of people he can turn to for fundraising ideas, brainstorming, troubleshooting, and simply talking through the changing seasons of business and life. That willingness to help is something the Chamber gets to experience firsthand. Darren is always ready to pitch in at Chamber events, whether that means helping with check-in, setting up, or jumping in wherever he is needed. He brings that same attitude to his work as an Ambassador, looking for ways to help people feel welcome, make connections,
and find the resources that can help them move forward. We’re grateful for Darren’s contributions and appreciate all the ways he shows up for the Chamber and our community. His willingness to help, genuine interest in people, and positive attitude make him someone we’re lucky to have in our corner.

Ribbon Cuttings Community partners gathered to celebrate the reopening of the Theler Wetlands Nature Center in Belfair after more than 12 years. The renovated center is now operated through a partnership between the Hood Canal Salmon Enhancement Group and Washington Department of Fish & Wildlife.
Hood Canalé put a tasty twist on the traditional ribbon cutting with a “noodle cutting” to celebrate its recent expansion during a joint Chamber After Hours. The Union restaurant opened Octo’s Garden, a reimagined retail and dining space, while also adding a second pizza oven and creating more room for year-round dining and events. The North Mason Chamber of Commerce celebrated the opening of a new Visitor Information Center at the Salmon Center in Belfair. The new location expands access to visitor resources and information for travelers exploring North Mason and the Hood Canal region.

Business After Hours provides an exclusive opportunity for Chamber members to connect and expand their local business-to-business network. These events also offer inside looks, stimulating conversations, & complimentary refreshments. July’s Business After Hours took members to Alderbrook Golf & Yacht Club for an evening overlooking Hood Canal and the Olympic Mountains. Guests enjoyed light refreshments and bites from the clubhouse restaurant, browsed the Pro Shop, and had the chance to connect with fellow members, local business owners, community leaders, and friends. August brought a joint Business After Hours with the North Mason Chamber at Hood Canalé in Union. The evening also included a ribbon cutting for Octo’s Garden, Hood Canalé’s new indoor retail and dining space. Members from both Chambers enjoyed woodfired pizza, charcuterie, Caldo Formaggio, and drinks while exploring the new space and taking in the views of Hood Canal. Save the date for upcoming Business After Hours: Wednesday, October 14, with Turning Pointe Survivor Advocacy Center and Wednesday, November 18, at Bradley Air Company’s headquarters on Johns Prairie.

Final Push for Flower Basket Fundraiser The flower baskets that grace our streets for the summer have hung proudly throughout the summer season . This project, led by the Chamber, would not have been possible without the help, support, and organizational skills from members of the community. Our thanks goes to Hood Canal Communications, and City of Shelton who were instrumental in the planning and hanging the flower baskets. The Chamber and its partners collaborate to beautify our community in the summer with a flowery, cheerful welcome and in the winter by displaying the Christmas street light ornaments. There is a tremendous cost associated with beautifying our community and the entire project is funded by community donations. No tax dollars are allocated towards these projects and all donations go directly to the beautification program. You can help! Our fundraising goal to cover the costs for the 2026 season is $20,000. Gifts made to the beautification program provide for the upkeep of the flower baskets and Christmas decorations. Summer flower baskets may be sponsored for $300 each which offsets the cost of purchasing, maintaining, and watering one flower basket for the season. You may choose to sponsor a basket in the name of a business, an individual, or in memoriam of a loved one. You can even choose which basket you'd like to sponsor from a list of available locations. Gifts of any amount are appreciated! You may drop-off monetary contributions at the Chamber Office located at 215 W Railroad Ave or mail them to SMCCF, PO Box 2389, Shelton, WA 98584.
