There is something special about summer in Mason County. The days are longer, calendars fill quickly, and our communities seem to come alive in a different way. Visitors arrive to experience our trails, waterways, and small town feel. Residents spend more time outdoors, attend local events, and reconnect with neighbors and friends. Businesses welcome familiar faces as well as first-time customers. What stands out to me each year is how connected we all are.

A visitor stopping in Hoodsport for information may discover a local restaurant or decide to stay an extra night. Someone attending a festival may wander into a downtown shop they have never visited before. Families gathering for a concert or community event create energy that benefits businesses and strengthens our sense of place. One experience often leads to another.

At the Chamber, we have the privilege of helping make those connections happen. We serve as a Catalyst for business growth, a Convener of leaders and influencers, and a Champion for a strong community. Sometimes that work is highly visible, like the Expo & Bite of Mason County, which brings together businesses, nonprofits, and thousands of community members. Other times, it happens behind the scenes through visitor services, business referrals, regional partnerships, and conversations about the issues shaping our future.

Partnership remains central to that work. Alongside MasonEDC and the North Mason Chamber of Commerce, we continue to collaborate on initiatives that strengthen our economy and support long-term vitality throughout the county. We know that communities do better when organizations work together and when business success and community well-being are viewed as interconnected.

That same spirit of shared investment is reflected in our Beautification Program. The hanging flower baskets in summer and holiday lights in winter don't happen by accident. They are funded through the generosity of businesses, organizations, and community members who believe welcoming places matter. These projects contribute to community pride and help create an environment where people want to visit, invest, and spend their time.

As Board Chair, I am constantly reminded that one of the greatest strengths of Mason County is the way our community welcomes people while staying true to who we are. Having grown up here, the opportunity to serve in this role is especially personal to me. I have always believed tourism is about more than a seasonal boost. It is a chance to share the natural beauty, hospitality, and entrepreneurial spirit that make this region so special. When we invite people to explore Mason County, we are also inviting them to invest in our local economy and in the people who make this community thrive.

There is no shortage of reasons to spend time close to home, and I hope more people take the opportunity to do just that. Residents and visitors alike can enjoy a hike in the nearby mountains, a day of fishing on a lake, river, or Hood Canal, or a quiet afternoon discovering small shops and restaurants in our communities. Our farmers market gives local growers, makers, and artisans a place to connect with neighbors and visitors, while our restaurants, wineries, shellfish producers, and retailers offer experiences that cannot be replicated anywhere else. Every purchase made at a locally owned business helps support jobs, families, and the long-term vitality of Mason County.

Local events are also a powerful part of our tourism story. The Mason County Forest Festival, kicking off the season, was a wonderful example of that spirit. It was truly heartening to see so many people out in support of our community, enjoying the festivities and spending time together. Moments like that remind me how fortunate we are to live in a place where people show up for one another. Events like this bring energy to our downtowns and gathering places, create lasting memories for families, and give small businesses valuable visibility. When people come for an event or a weekend getaway, they often return for the welcoming atmosphere and authentic experiences they find here.

That opportunity will only grow as the 2026 FIFA Men’s World Cup comes to Seattle, with six matches scheduled in the region and thousands of visitors expected across Washington. While many travelers will begin in Seattle, communities throughout the state will have a chance to welcome them. I believe Mason County is well positioned to benefit if we continue to invite people to venture beyond the city and discover what makes our corner of Washington unique. This is the time to promote our destinations and champion the locally owned businesses that give our communities their character. When we choose to shop local, dine local, and celebrate local, we strengthen the foundation of Mason County not just for one season, but for years to come.

As Mason County voters prepare for the August primary election, the business community is creating opportunities for residents to connect directly with those seeking public office. The Chamber and the Economic Development Council of Mason County will host a County Commission District 3 Candidate Meet & Greet at 6:30p on Thursday, July 9, at the Mason PUD 3 Auditorium on Johns Prairie.

Candidates invited to participate in the open house, listed in ballot order, include Eric Onisko, Daniel Cameron, Miguel Gutierrez, Rick Lee, Karen (Schade) Sullivan, George Blush, and Lovejoy Schaefer.

This open house-style event will give community members the opportunity to meet the candidates seeking the District 3 seat on the Mason County Board of Commissioners, ask questions, and learn more about their priorities and perspectives ahead of the election.

Candidates will be stationed at individual tables throughout the evening, allowing attendees to engage in one-on-one conversations and gather information important to their voting decisions.

County commissioners are responsible for adopting county budgets, setting policy direction, and making decisions that affect everything from economic development and infrastructure to public services and long-term planning. The individuals elected to these positions help shape the policies that influence both residents and the businesses that call Mason County home.

The Shelton-Mason County Chamber and the Economic Development Council of Mason County collectively serve as the voice of the business community and we make it a point to be at the heart of important issues like workforce development, quality of life, and civic engagement.

That said, we are not political action committees and do not endorse candidates; we are independent organizations led by the private sector.

The Chamber and EDC provide nonpartisan information and host community education and outreach opportunities because we believe people have a right to know what candidates for public office believe about issues that affect our community. The company is also advancing its Fiber Forward: 106 in Union project, a multi-phase effort to upgrade existing systems with Fiberto-the-Home technology. The initial phase represents a $1.6 million investment and extends fiber service to approximately 400 homes while laying the groundwork for future expansion. In total, the Union fiber rebuild represents a $3.8 million investment completed in partnership with the Rural Utilities Service under the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Another major broadband expansion project is also nearing completion. The $6.6 million initiative will deliver service to eight previously unserved areas of Mason County, helping close connectivity gaps and ensuring that more residents have access to the reliable internet service they need.

Employees regularly participate in training opportunities and industry events designed to strengthen service and bring new ideas back to Mason County. Team members also serve in national, state, and local organizations related to telecommunications and civic life, helping ensure HCC remains engaged in conversations that shape the future of the industry and the communities it serves.

That commitment continues through significant investments in local infrastructure. In 2025, HCC completed the $15.8 million Northern Hood Canal Fiber project, bringing high-speed fiber internet to the Brinnon area. Supported through state and federal broadband funding, the project expanded access to reliable service in a rural area where connectivity has become increasingly important for education, business, healthcare, and everyday life.

While technology remains a central focus, HCC believes its greatest strength is its people. The company continues to invest in employee development and promote talent from within. Recent promotions include Marti Depoe's advancement to Customer Service Manager and Cara Treadwell's promotion to Customer Service Supervisor, reflecting a culture that values growth, opportunity, and leadership.

The company supports local schools, nonprofit organizations, and community initiatives while encouraging employees to volunteer their time and expertise. Beautification Grows with Community Support

Throughout downtown Shelton and at key gateways into the community, colorful blooms once again welcome residents and visitors during the summer months. For many, the baskets are a familiar part of the season and one of the first signs that summer has arrived.

The Chamber's flower basket program has been a community tradition since 1999. Over the years, the baskets have become a recognizable part of Shelton's streetscape, adding color and helping create a welcoming environment for those who live, work, and visit here.

While the baskets are now hanging throughout the community, fundraising efforts continue. The Chamber's annual beautification campaign helps offset the cost of the flower basket program as well as the holiday decorations that transform Shelton into Christmastown USA each winter. There is a significant investment in materials, maintenance, watering, and installation, and the program relies entirely on community support.

Businesses, organizations, and individuals can contribute in a variety of ways. Donations of any amount are appreciated, and flower baskets may be sponsored for $300 each. Skydive Kapowsin: A Bucket-List Experience with a Mason County View

During the summer months, visitors from around the world make their way to Shelton to skydive at Skydive Kapowsin. Some are making their first tandem jump, while others are experienced skydivers returning to a destination they have visited many times before. For many of those travelers, the jump itself becomes just one part of a broader Mason County experience.

Over the years, Skydive Kapowsin has earned a reputation as one of the premier skydiving destinations in the Pacific Northwest, welcoming thousands of visitors to its drop zone each year. While many guests travel from throughout Washington and neighboring states, it is not unusual to meet skydivers from Canada, Europe, Australia, and Asia who first learned about Shelton through the skydiving community.

For first-time jumpers, the experience is often tied to a milestone worth celebrating. Birthdays, graduations, anniversaries, and long-delayed bucket-list goals bring people through the doors each season, while experienced skydivers are drawn by the aircraft, facilities, professional staff, and welcoming atmosphere that have helped establish Skydive Kapowsin as a destination within the sport. attracts everyone from students working toward their licenses to accomplished competitors and coaches looking to share the skies with fellow jumpers.

The scenery is another part of what keeps people talking long after their feet are back on the ground.

From 14,000 feet above Mason County, jumpers can take in views of Mount Rainier, the Olympic Mountains, Puget Sound, and miles of evergreen forest stretching across the landscape. Rivers and waterways weave through the scenery, and on clear summer days many visitors find themselves talking about the view just as much as the experience of freefall.

Those visitors often spend time exploring beyond the drop zone as well, staying in local hotels, dining at area restaurants, shopping at local businesses, and visiting nearby attractions before heading home. Friends and family members frequently travel alongside them, extending their stays and introducing even more people to everything Mason County has to offer.

As Skydive Kapowsin prepares for another busy season, the team is looking forward to

welcoming both returning visitors and those making their very first jump. Every summer brings people with different stories and different reasons for visiting, whether they are marking an important milestone, pursuing a personal goal, or simply looking for a new adventure. Whatever brings them to Shelton, many leave with a new appreciation for the community they experienced both on the ground and from above.

One event the team is especially excited about is World Skydiving Day on July 11. The international celebration brings together skydivers from around the globe to share their passion for the sport, and Skydive Kapowsin is proud to take part in the festivities.

Experienced jumpers, students, and first-time tandem skydivers alike will have the opportunity to participate in what is expected to be one of the busiest weekends of the summer while showcasing everything that makes both Skydive Kapowsin and Mason County memorable destinations.

For some visitors, Skydive Kapowsin is one stop along a larger trip through the Pacific Northwest, while for others it is the reason they came to Mason County in the first place.

Whether you're looking for a leisurely walk through the forest or a more ambitious day hike, some of the region's best outdoor experiences are just a short drive away.

Lower Lena Lake remains one of Mason County's most popular destinations for good reason. The trail winds through massive evergreens before opening to the lake's waters, making it a favorite for families, visitors, and longtime locals alike. Murhut Falls offers a shorter outing with a rewarding waterfall view, while the Duckabush River Trail provides a chance to venture deeper into the Olympic Peninsula's backcountry. Hoodsport Trail Park and Spider Lake round out the list with options for mountain bikers, hikers, and those simply hoping to explore somewhere new.

Of course, many people continue to ask about Staircase following last year's Bear Gulch Fire. The area remains closed while Olympic National Park and Olympic National Forest crews continue mitigation work and safety improvements along the Lake Cushman corridor. While no reopening timeline has been announced, progress continues behind the scenes and many are hopeful the beloved area will once again welcome visitors in the future.

Until then, there is no shortage of trails to explore right here in Mason County. Whether you're revisiting a longtime favorite or trying somewhere new, summer is the perfect excuse to head outside and see where the trail leads.

Loblolly Lavender Farm has become a seasonal destination for visitors seeking the beauty, fragrance, and tranquility of lavender season. Since the farm opened three years ago, it has grown into a beloved local attraction, drawing guests from across the region to experience vibrant lavender fields, handcrafted products, and the peaceful atmosphere of a working farm.

Loblolly Lavender Farm is a familyowned operation built on a love of gardening and creating beautiful spaces for others to enjoy. Owners Keith and Tracy Cook saw an opportunity to combine their passion for growing with a desire to create a place where people could slow down, connect with nature, and spend time with friends and family. Lavender proved to be the perfect fit, offering beauty, fragrance, and versatility while creating opportunities to develop a variety of handmade products.

Today, more than 2,000 lavender plants bloom across the property, creating a colorful landscape that attracts visitors throughout the summer months. Guests can stroll through fragrant rows of lavender, browse the farm's selection of handcrafted lavender products, and enjoy a peaceful setting that feels worlds away from the pace of everyday life. The farm reopened for the season on June 12, and guests can explore the property, shop lavender-inspired products, and enjoy the peaceful setting that has become a favorite summertime destination in Mason County. One of the highlights of the season will be Loblolly Lavender Farm's 3rd Annual Lavender Festival, taking place July 11 and 12 from 10:00a to 4:00p each day. The festival has become a popular summer tradition, bringing together visitors from throughout the region to celebrate lavender season at its peak.

Festival attendees can spend the day strolling through fields of blooming lavender, shopping from more than 20 local vendors, enjoying food trucks and live music, and taking in the beauty of the farm. Lavender will also be available for U-Cut, allowing guests to bring a piece of the experience home with them.

For the Cook family, the support of the local community has been instrumental to the farm's success. Beneath the Surface at Sund Rock Beneath the Surface at Sund Rock Marine Preserve

While many visitors experience Hood Canal from the shoreline or on the water, Sund Rock Marine Preserve offers a chance to explore what lies beneath the surface. Located along Hood Canal, the preserve has become a destination for divers seeking close encounters with marine life, easy water access, and a unique way to experience one of Mason County's most remarkable natural resources.

Divers frequently place Hood Canal among the top cold-water diving destinations in the Pacific Northwest. One reason is the area's relatively calm conditions compared to some coastal diving locations, where strong currents can create additional challenges.

Another draw is access to marine protected areas such as Sund Rock Marine Preserve and nearby Octopus Hole, where healthy underwater ecosystems provide opportunities to observe a wide variety of marine species.

What makes Sund Rock unique is its combination of accessibility and natural beauty. The preserve offers easy, lowbank entry into the water, off-highway parking, a freshwater rinse area for dive gear, and a reservation system designed to help prevent overcrowding. These features allow visitors to focus on the diving experience while helping protect the quality of the site.

The preserve's protected status increases the likelihood of seeing some of the marine life that has made Hood Canal famous among divers. Giant Pacific octopus, wolf eels, lingcod, nudibranchs, and a variety of bottom fish and marine plants are commonly observed throughout the preserve.

Some divers even encounter seals during their underwater adventures.

Beyond the wildlife, Hood Canal's geology adds another layer of fascination. Despite its name, Hood Canal is actually a fjord, carved by glaciers millions of years ago. The steep banks and deep underwater channels created by those glaciers formed a unique marine environment that continues to support an abundance of aquatic life today.

Sund Rock welcomes divers with a range of experience levels. Posted dive maps and marker buoys help guide visitors to areas of interest within the preserve, while local dive professionals help make the site more accessible to newcomers.

Located just a short drive from Sund Rock, YSS Dive offers scuba instruction, guided dives, equipment rentals, and air fills, providing visitors with the resources they need to safely explore Hood Canal's underwater environment. These services help make Sund Rock approachable for newer divers while still offering plenty to discover for experienced underwater adventurers.

While best known as a diving destination, the property also offers a scenic setting overlooking Hood Canal and may be available for select small private gatherings. The rustic waterfront location provides a unique backdrop for intimate events while maintaining the natural character that makes the preserve special.

As interest in outdoor recreation continues to grow, Sund Rock Marine Preserve offers visitors a chance to experience a side of Mason County that many never have the opportunity to see. By protecting marine habitat and

welcoming divers from throughout the region, the preserve offers visitors a unique way to experience one of Mason County's most remarkable natural resources. Together with partners like YSS Dive, the preserve continues to support outdoor recreation opportunities that attract visitors and introduce more people to the natural beauty found beneath the waters of Hood Canal.

SR 3 Closure Near Gorst Expected to Impact Summer Travel

Mason County travelers should plan for additional travel time this month as a fish passage project has closed a portion of State Route 3 near Gorst.

The closure, which began June 13, affects both directions of SR 3 near Sunnyslope Road Southwest and is scheduled to remain in place through 7:00a on Monday, June 29. While the highway remains open to local residential and business traffic north and south of the work zone, through traffic is not permitted.

The Washington State Department of Transportation is using the closure to remove and replace a culvert that blocks fish passage beneath the highway. During the 16-day closure, contractor crews are installing a large prefabricated concrete culvert and constructing a more natural stream channel designed to improve fish movement both upstream and downstream.

Signed detours are in place throughout the closure. Drivers are being routed via Sunnyslope Road Southwest and Southwest Lake Flora Road, while commercial vehicles are being directed to State Route 302 and State Route 16. Separate routes are also available for pedestrians and cyclists.

Because SR 3 serves as an important regional transportation corridor, travelers should expect delays and plan accordingly. WSDOT recommends allowing extra travel time, consolidating trips when possible, considering carpooling, and traveling during off-peak hours.

The project is part of the state's ongoing effort to remove barriers to fish passage beneath state highways and improve habitat for salmon and steelhead throughout western Washington. Crews are working double shifts during the closure to complete the work as quickly as possible and reduce the overall duration of construction impacts.

The Chamber's Annual Golf Tournament returns to the beautiful Alderbrook Golf & Yacht Club on Friday, August 21. The event gives golfers, businesses, and community members a chance to spend a day on the course while supporting Chamber partnerships, educational opportunities, and programs that benefit the local business community.

The four-person scramble begins with a 9:00a shotgun start and 18 holes of golf at Alderbrook. Teams range from seasoned golfers to coworkers, customers, and friends simply looking for an enjoyable day outside the office. The scramble format keeps the tournament approachable for golfers of all skill levels and puts the focus on teamwork, conversation, and a little friendly competition.

While the golf is the reason everyone gathers, many participants will tell you the sponsor stops are one of the most memorable parts of the day. Businesses and organizations from across Mason County set up throughout the course with games, giveaways, food, and activities for golfers. Each sponsor brings something different, creating new experiences from one hole to the next and helping make every year unique.

For more than a decade, the tournament has been a popular way for businesses to connect outside of a traditional meetings or networking events. Some companies enter a team of employees, while others invite customers or business partners to join them for the day. The relaxed atmosphere creates opportunities for conversations that might not happen around a conference table.

Funds raised through the tournament help offset the costs of Chamber partnerships, educational opportunities, and programs that support the local business community throughout the year. Sponsors also play a major role in the event's success, helping create a fun experience for golfers while showcasing their businesses to participants throughout the day.

Golfers may register individually or as part of a four-person team. Standard registration is $150 per player or $600 per team, while Deluxe Registration is available for $175 per player or $700 per team. Sponsorship opportunities are also available for businesses interested in participating in the event.

Meet Natalie Marshall

CHAMBER AMBASSADOR

As Public Affairs Coordinator for Green Diamond, Natalie Marshall spends much of her time working with community members, organizations, and local partners throughout Mason County. When she was looking for another way to become more involved and support local businesses, joining the Ambassador Committee felt like a natural fit.

Now approaching her first year as an Ambassador, Natalie has enjoyed getting to know local business owners, attending community events, and becoming more involved in the Chamber's work. The role complements her professional focus on community relations while giving her new opportunities to support businesses throughout Mason County.

One of Natalie's favorite parts of serving as an Ambassador is being part of the excitement that surrounds local businesses and community events. Whether she is attending a ribbon cutting, networking at a Chamber event, or connecting with members one-on-one, she enjoys celebrating the milestones and successes of local businesses.

“Being part of those moments and celebrating wins, big or small, feels really special,” she shared. “It’s also so rewarding to see how strong community connections can truly make a difference.”

Natalie stays engaged by attending events, supporting local businesses, and staying connected with Chamber members throughout the year. She believes some of the strongest connections are built simply by showing up, listening, and taking a genuine interest in the people around you. Whether she's introducing two people who should know each other or checking in with a local business, she values the relationships that help strengthen the community.

Mason County has what Natalie describes as a supportive and collaborative atmosphere, and serving as an Ambassador allows her to be part of that every day. From celebrating business milestones to helping members make new connections, she enjoys playing a small role in the continued success of the local business community.

The April Business After Hours was hosted by Graffiti Creative Arts Center, where Chamber members had the opportunity to explore the creative space and craft alongside one another. The evening also marked the unveiling of Graffiti's new pottery wheels, an exciting addition that will expand ceramics classes and programming.

Peninsula Credit Union welcomed Chamber members for May's Business After Hours, featuring bites from nearby restaurant From Yola and special appearances by the Mason County Forest Festival Royalty Court. The evening also provided an opportunity to learn more about the credit union's upcoming core conversion and how it will help Peninsula better serve its members.

The June Business After Hours brought together members of the Shelton-Mason County Chamber and North Mason Chamber at Hood Canal Communications and Cameo Boutique in Union Square. Guests had the opportunity to explore the businesses throughout the plaza, connect with members from both Chambers, and take home a variety of door prizes.

The Chamber celebrated the completion of a new walking trail at the Shelton Family YMCA. Created by volunteers as part of the YMCA's Common Ground initiative, the trail expands opportunities for recreation, wellness, and connection on the organization's nearly 10-acre campus.

On May 8 Mushroom Headz Tattoo celebrated their new and expanded location on Olympic Ave. Owner Wesslee and the team showcased their tattoo and piercing services and the new location has space for even more artists and a large and welcoming waiting room.

Spruce Properties specializes in construction, design, and property solutions across the Pacific Northwest. They handle everything from roof repairs and replacements to new builds, remodels, and exterior projects. Their team combines years of experience with a hands-on approach, ensuring every project meets the unique needs of the region’s homes and property owners.

Winter Blossom Creative is a print shop in Hoodsport offering photography, printing, and creative services. Ribbon Ribbon

On May 22 the Chamber welcomed Northwest to downtown with a Ribbon Cutting ceremony for their new storefront and showroom, located on Second St. They offer custom promotional products, branded apparel, business marketing solutions, and other services for local businesses.

The Chamber celebrated the Grand Opening of Apothecary of Shelton with a Ribbon Cutting celebration on May 27. Owner and herbalist Desiree opened The Apothecary of Shelton with a vision of creating a welcoming space where community members can explore herbal wellness. The shop offers bulk herbs, handcrafted tea blends, herbal products, and so much more!

The Chamber celebrated the Grand Reopening of the Drift Bar & Grill at Lucky Dog Casino on June 4. Following topto-bottom renovations, the restaurant reopened with a fresh new look and a family-friendly atmosphere designed to welcome guests of all ages. Guests can still enjoy longtime favorites, including the popular Prime Rib dinners served every Friday and Saturday.

The Chamber celebrated Sparky Mountain Wellness & Arts' move to an expanded Cota Street studio with a Ribbon Cutting on June 9. The new space has been a longtime goal for owner Jessica Dean and allows room for larger yoga and dance classes, expanded wellness offerings, and future creative projects.
