Spring is a season of renewal, and here in Mason County, it’s a natural time to take stock of where we are and where we ’ re headed Whether it’s refreshing a workspace, preparing a property for the months ahead, or simply spending more time outdoors, this time of year brings a renewed sense of energy to both our businesses and our community

It is an honor to serve as Board Chair of the Shelton-Mason County Chamber of Commerce. Having grown up here, I’ve always believed that our greatest strength lies in our people The relationships we build, the support we show one another, and the pride we take in our community all play a role in shaping Mason County into a place where businesses can grow and thrive

Our local businesses continue to be the foundation of that strength From storefronts and service providers to contractors and entrepreneurs, each plays a part in creating a vibrant and resilient local economy This season, many are taking the opportunity to refresh, reorganize, and plan ahead, whether through property improvements, new offerings, or continued investment in their teams and spaces

Spring also brings visible reminders of the care and pride we take in our community Each year, the Chamber’s Beautification Program helps enhance our shared spaces through the hanging flower baskets that return to our streets in early summer What began as a small effort has grown into a meaningful tradition, made possible by the continued support of local businesses, organizations, and community members who invest in the look and feel of Mason County

This time of year also offers more opportunities to gather, whether at Chamber events, community celebrations, or local workshops and activities happening across the county You can find a full list of upcoming events on pages 22 and 23, and I encourage everyone to take advantage of the many ways to get involved and stay connected this season

ADDRESSING ADDRESSING CHILDCARE ACCESS IN ACCESS MASON COUNTY MASON COUNTY

Across Mason County, access to childcare continues to present challenges for families, employers, and the broader workforce. In response, the Mason County Childcare Coalition has been working since October to better understand local needs and identify opportunities to expand access to care.

Led by Economic Development Council of Mason County in partnership with Mason Matters, the effort is supported through funding from the Washington State Department of Commerce. Together, these partners have convened employers, childcare providers, early learning centers, community organizations, nonprofits, school districts, higher education partners, Tribal representatives, and local and city government to take a comprehensive look at childcare in Mason County.

Through these discussions, a consistent theme has emerged. Childcare is not only a family issue, but also a workforce and economic issue. When reliable childcare is unavailable, it can limit a parent’s ability to participate in the workforce, pursue education or training, and maintain consistent employment. For employers, this often translates to challenges with hiring and retaining staff.

To better understand the scope of the issue, the coalition gathered input from local families through the Mason County Childcare Needs Survey. The results reflect the realities many in the community are experiencing. Forty-one percent of respondents reported that childcare strongly affects their ability to work or pursue education and training. Many families rely on informal care arrangements, such as friends, relatives, or neighbors, while others continue to search for reliable options. A smaller portion of respondents currently utilize licensed childcare providers, highlighting a gap between available services and community need.

The coalition’s work is focused on identifying barriers, supporting existing providers, and exploring opportunities to expand childcare capacity across the county. This includes both short-term solutions and long-term strategies aimed at strengthening the overall system and improving access to affordable, high-quality care.

The coalition will continue meeting throughout the year to guide implementation and partnership development. A comprehensive assessment of the data, along with proposed action steps, will be shared in June to help inform long-term solutions and expand childcare capacity in Mason County.

As these efforts move forward, childcare remains a critical component of Mason County’s economic future, supporting not only families, but also the businesses and workforce that keep the community strong.

In Washington, Green Diamond’s lands are certified to Sustainable Forestry Initiative® standards Timberlands in Mason, Grays Harbor, Pacific, Thurston, and Lewis counties are managed under a Habitat Conservation Plan developed through collaboration with state and federal agencies, conservation groups, and Tribes The plan protects 51 fish and wildlife species while allowing for continued forest operations, balancing environmental priorities with responsible land use Additional protections are also in place for species such as the Pacific fisher and northern spotted owl under Washington’s forest practices regulations

Beyond forest management, Green Diamond’s lands also serve as a resource for the community The company allows public access to portions of its working forests in Washington and operates a Recreation Access Permit Program across several counties, including Mason County These lands are used by community members for a variety of outdoor activities and remain an important part of the region’s connection to its natural landscape

Green Diamond also maintains a longstanding commitment to the communities where it operates, contributing to local organizations through both monetary and in-kind support These efforts are focused in the areas where the company has a presence, reinforcing its connection to the region

This commitment also includes support for local students through scholarship programs such as the Mark E Reed Scholarship, which has been awarded since 1947 and provides funding to students in Green Diamond’s operating communities, including Mason County, to support continued education beyond high school

At the February Chamber luncheon, Green Diamond presented on their long-standing commitment to sustainable forestry, economic contribution, and community engagement Company leaders shared how Green Diamond’s certified working forests support local jobs, wages, tax revenue, conservation efforts, and wildfire preparedness while balancing long-term environmental stewardship.

As Mason County continues to grow, working forests remain an important part of the region’s economy and identity Green Diamond’s approach reflects an ongoing effort to manage these lands in a way that supports both environmental stewardship and the communities connected to them, ensuring these working forests remain a resource for future generations

A LOOK AT MASON COUNTY’S SPRING HOUSING MARKET

As we head into spring, conversations about the housing market tend to pick up Whether you are thinking about buying, selling, or simply paying attention to what is happening locally, one of the first questions that comes up is about interest rates and where they might be headed The honest answer is that no one knows for sure Even economists have been cautious about making firm predictions What we can look at, though, is where things stand today

Over the past year, interest rates have eased slightly In February 2025, the average rate for a 30-year fixed mortgage was 6 77% As of mid-March 2026, that rate is closer to 6 5%, while 15-year mortgages have moved from 6 11% to around 6 07% These changes are not dramatic, but they do point to a market that is adjusting rather than shifting quickly in one direction

Here in Mason County, that sense of adjustment is showing up in a few keyways. One of the most noticeable is how long homes are staying on the market. A year ago, homes were selling in an average of 46 days. Today, that number is closer to 70 days. While that shift may sound discouraging at first, it often creates a more workable pace. Buyers have more time to consider their options, and sellers have more opportunity to price their homes thoughtfully and prepare them for the market

Home prices have remained relatively steady through this change The average sold price in March 2025 was $420,000, compared to $415,000 in February 2026 This level of consistency reflects a market that is stabilizing rather than correcting in a major way

Another way to understand what is happening locally is by looking at months of inventory, also called the absorption rate This measures how long it would take to sell all current listings if no new homes were added A balanced market typically falls between four and six months, and Mason County is currently at about 4 3 months, placing it right in that range For many in the community, this will feel more like a return to a familiar pace

For buyers and sellers alike, this kind of balance is often more manageable Buyers may find a bit more room to negotiate, while sellers who price their homes appropriately are still seeing steady activity It is a shift away from the urgency of recent years and toward something that feels more even

Spring is also a natural time for homeowners to check in on their properties As the weather improves, many take the opportunity to inspect roofs and gutters, refresh outdoor spaces, and make sure heating and cooling systems are ready for the months ahead. These small steps can go a long way in maintaining a home’s value and can be especially helpful for those considering listing this season. While there will always be some uncertainty when it comes to the housing market, the current picture in Mason County is relatively steady After several years of rapid change, this spring is shaping up to be a little more balanced for everyone involved

It is also worth taking time to assess long-term maintenance needs Identifying projects early, whether it is roof repairs, paving, or exterior improvements, allows property owners to plan ahead, budget accordingly, and avoid more urgent issues later in the year

Celebrate Earth Day Celebrate Earth IN MASON COUNTY

In Mason County, the outdoors is part of the rhythm of daily life With Earth Day observed each year on April 22, the season offers a natural opportunity to step outside, reconnect with these spaces, and take part in keeping them well cared for

As the season shifts, there is a noticeable return to outdoor routines Trails see more activity, shoreline access points become busier, and gardens begin to take shape across the county. For many, spring is less about a single event and more about getting back into the habit of spending time outside, whether that means a quiet walk, a weekend project, or simply enjoying the landscape that surrounds us.

That connection to place is reflected in how Earth Day takes shape locally. In Mason County, it often shows up through practical, hands-on efforts that directly benefit shared spaces. This year, Shelton Parks & Recreation and the Mason Conservation District are offering opportunities like the Earth Day Invasive Weed Pull at the Huff ‘N’ Puff Trail, giving community members a chance to improve a well-used area while spending time outdoors

Additional activities bring together a number of local partners The Mason Conservation District, Shelton Family YMCA, and Shelton Veterans Village are collaborating on an Earth Day Celebration that includes service projects, community activities, and opportunities to connect with local services

Meet Sheila Corson

When Sheila Corson moved to Shelton in the summer of 2023, she was looking for ways to connect with her new community and find meaningful ways to get involved Joining the Chamber’s Ambassador Committee last fall gave her the opportunity to do just that, while also supporting local businesses and nonprofits along the way As the Public Information Officer for Mason PUD 3, Sheila has quickly become a familiar and welcoming presence at Chamber events.

Since stepping into the role, Sheila has embraced the opportunity to support and encourage local businesses in both big and small ways. Whether it is celebrating a new opening, recognizing a milestone, or simply showing up to support a fellow member, she values being part of the ongoing success of the business community For Sheila, those moments of connection and encouragement are what community is all about

“It may seem small, but the most rewarding part is welcoming the new or shy person at events,”

she shared “It takes a lot to show up to a room full of people you don’t know.”

That perspective shapes how she approaches every event Sheila makes a point to connect with at least one new person each time she attends, helping make introductions and ensuring that no one feels overlooked She understands how intimidating it can be to walk into a room of unfamiliar faces, especially for entrepreneurs, and takes pride in helping others feel comfortable and included.

Beyond Chamber events, Sheila stays actively engaged by attending local celebrations, supporting small businesses, and finding ways to stay connected throughout the community She also uses social media to engage with and share local businesses to help spread the word about the work they are doing

For Sheila, being an Ambassador is about creating a sense of belonging She wants members, whether they are brand new or have been involved for years, to know they have a place within the Chamber and a network of people who are glad to see them succeed
