contemplations of the CEO A friend recently shared a complaint with me: she had received a quote of $200 from a local business owner to remove some brush piles from her property. In her opinion, it was far too much to pay for a 15-minute job. But is that truly what it is? Yes, likely two employees would be onsite for 15 minutes. However, we can imagine that they would drive a truck and a trailer to haul the yard waste away. Perhaps it’s just 15 minutes each way to and from the property. They also need to take the brush to unload (perhaps another 15 minutes), plus the cost of disposal. All in all, it’s likely an hour-long job for those two employees.

That cost of doing business is expensive already; although we haven't yet considered the cost for the business location (rent, insurance, electricity, utilities), the paperwork (accounting, taxes, reporting), and materials (gas, rakes, gloves). Then there must be some additional expenses – cost of maintenance of the truck and auto insurance come to the top of my mind… it’s easy to see where it all adds up. In the Chamber Board meeting last month, a discussion ensued about the cost of goods increasing at a rate unlike anything that we’ve seen. Our local espresso maven shared that many of her inventory items costs are up 50% or more - if she could get her hands on them to begin with. Increasing prices on customers isn’t something anyone likes to pass along, but with wages, taxes, and cost-of-goods increases, it's something that must be considered. She also lamented needing to change her loyalty card system. After twenty years of getting a free drink, it will now be a $5 discount. Additionally, she’ll likely need to charge tax on the full price of the drink – this will save her more than $30,000 annually. It doesn’t nearly cover the rising costs, but it is important to her to reward loyalty. Neither of these scenarios address the workforce shortages. Businesses are strained with too much work and not enough employees. My hope is that this gives you some insight into some of the issues our business community is up against. Many are just coming out of the harm caused by the pandemic and trying to make headway toward recovery. It’s likely that we will continue to see prices continuing to increase as costs increase as well. In the meantime, patience and understanding are always welcome and appreciated during the strain.

Comments from the CHair I cannot express how honored I am for the opportunity to serve as the 2022 Shelton-Mason County Chamber of Commerce Board Chair. First and foremost, I’d like to take this opportunity to thank all our amazing chamber members, staff, volunteers, and the board for their combined efforts to build a vibrant business community. For those of you who don’t know me, I am the Executive Director of Crossroads Housing. Crossroads Housing operates multiple family homeless shelters, low-income apartments, transitional housing, permanent supportive housing, emergency rental assistance, and much, much more. Although it is a lofty idea, my primary goal is to educate and assist those in need on the road to housing independence and to end homelessness in our beautiful community. While I can speak for days about homelessness, advise on amazing locations to launch your kayak, share the trials and tribulations of raising three daughters, disclose the best shrimp bait and perhaps where to purchase Jeep parts, none of that is truly thrilling to the masses. Instead, I’ll share something I’m frequently asked about: why be part of the Chamber? I was a Chamber member for many years prior to serving on the Board and have been questioned why I, as a nonprofit, would be a member. Especially as the likelihood of hosting one of those amazing after hours or ribbon cutting events in a location in which vulnerable adults are seeking assistance is not even a slim chance. Yes, the event side of being a Chamber member is fantastic, but for me personally it is all about the networking and connecting to resources I had no clue were available in our local community. Being part of the Chamber is so much bigger than a recommendation for a great place to eat, what construction company is building new homes, or which shop is having a local sale. While the Chamber can help with this, even more I love the ability to know who’s hiring, big changes coming to our community, education opportunities, being able to pick up the phone and bounce ideas off another Chamber member, and being surrounded by people that want greatness for our business community. The long and short of it is absolutely YES, it is worth it to be a Chamber member! If you have not joined or attended a networking event I do challenge you to join in, I guarantee you will be impressed. As the sun finally shines and stunning baskets bloom down Railroad Avenue, I wish you all an amazing summer and can’t wait to see you all at the Bite of Mason County!

Road work underway Summer weather brings an increase in traffic on roadways, just as local agencies embark upon their peak construction season. The Chamber has compiled a list of upcoming projects taking place throughout the county. Schedules are subject to change. Please contact the lead agency indicated for details/updates. Western Gateway - City of Shelton sheltonwa.gov; (360) 490-0453 Railroad Avenue from 8th to city limits will be resurfaced. The scope of work includes a new sidewalk, curbing, pavement, and a water main installed between 11th and 12th Streets. Alternating traffic and detours will be made to Franklin Street whenever possible. Culvert Projects - Mason County masonountywa.gov; (360) 427-9670 ext. 452 Agate Loop Road will be closed to all through traffic (MP 1.0120-1.14) for several weeks to allow crews to replace fish barrier culvert, A detour will be available. A failed culvert will be replaced, resulting in a detour for residents and emergency services on North Shore Road (MP 6.9-7.0). “This will meet our food service needs in a familyfriendly atmosphere.” Spring cleaning took on a new intensity this year at Little Creek Casino Resort. In April, their well-known boardwalk began to get a major facelift. So major, that you may not even recognize it. The rock and foliage was removed near the pool, artwork relocated, and the game room was nixed in favor of new family-friendly food service restaurants set to make their debut soon.
In the fall, this area will become home to four venues: Red Cedar Espresso, Legends Cheesesteak, Kamilche Pizza, and Creekside Wok. “We’re excited to offer these new options,” says CEO Ramon Nunez. “We recognize the need for family-friendly options and this new space will add to that.”
Some 60 seats will be made available, which is greatly needed – particularly on the weekends and during events. In addition, there are plans to commission a local tribal artist making the space even more inviting and comfortable. Stay tuned a grand opening announcement in Autumn 2022. Ribbon The Chamber joined Shelton School District to mark the official opening of the Manufacturing Engineering & Technology (MET) Academy building at Shelton High School on May 25. The community was invited to tour the facility, watch demos of its equipment, and visit with district staff about the newly developed Strategic Plan “Shelton Success.”
Timberland Regional Library along with the City of Shelton hosted a Grand Reopening on June 10. The building had been closed for an extensive project which included major remodeling of the bathrooms, replacing flooring and furniture, painting throughout, updating lighting, and moving the children and teen space downstairs.
Fred Meyer celebrated their 100-year anniversary on May 13, commemorating the occasion with a ribbon cutting prior to a full blown community celebration, featuring food trucks & local nonprofits.
A new chapter was celebrated with Café on the Way on June 10. The drivethrough coffee stand is under new ownership and new management. Conveniently located at the top of Purdy Canyon, the stand boasts a fresh new look and menu.
May 24, The Arc of the Peninsulas opened their doors to their new location in Shelton. The Arc provides services to individuals with developmental disabilities and their families. The nonprofit tirelessly promotes acceptance and inclusion.

Cuttings Alderbrook Resort and Spa recently completed a refresh project. Thoughtful updates and beautiful details were added throughout the property. On June 3, owners Jeff & Tricia Raikes and the Alderbrook team celebrated the restaurant remodel. Shelton Counseling, located inside Shelton Athletic Club, marked its grand opening on June 6. The therapy practice is owned and operated by Dacia Dunbar, LMFTA, LMHCA who offers streamlined intake and convenient scheduling options.

May’s event was held at Our Community Credit Union’s Mt. View Branch celebrating 80 years in business. CEO Bert Fisher proudly discussed the rich history that OCCU has contributed over the last 80 years in helping build a strong community. The Mason County Forest Festival's Royalty Court was in attendance dressed to impress. OCCU featured beverages from Cameo Boutique & Wine Shop and Hardware Distillery Company. There was also a fun trivia challenge to highlight their decades building a strong community.
Hood Canal Communications Union offices were filled with both Chamber with members across Mason County. The hospitality by the HCC staff was impeccable, and the location was ideal for friends and new faces to mingle and enjoy. General Manager Mike Oblizalo shared with guests about the company's Mason County roots and their upcoming expansion of high-speed fiber going up the Hood Canal an into new territory in Jefferson County. The Chamber’s Business After Hours provide an exclusive opportunity for members to connect with one another and expand their local business-tobusiness network. These monthly socials provide inside looks, intriguing conversations, and complimentary hors d' oeuvres and beverages. Attending in-person is an ideal way to introduce yourself for the first time or strengthen existing relationships. These socials are typically on the second Monday monthly from 5:30-7:00p. The Salmon Center, headquarters of Hood Canal Salmon Enhancement Group (HCSEG), is a special place situated next to several miles of foot-traffic only trails that wind throughout the Union River Wildlife Area. Work is underway to restore the section of trail connecting the Theler Wetlands to the rest of the Union River Wildlife Area for a complete trail system throughout the estuary. While dogs are not allowed on the Union River Wildlife Area trails, Fido and friends are more than welcome at the Salmon Center dog park! This park includes two fenced off-leash play areas, one for small dogs and one for all dogs. Also located at the Salmon Center is HCSEG’s Farm at Water’s Edge - a small WSDA organic and Salmon Safe certified farm. The U-Pick Gardens are open and ready for harvesting, with produce available by donation only. There are a variety of volunteer events in the garden where you can help maintain that community resource – as well as learn a wealth of gardening knowledge from HCSEG farm staff. Farm at Water’s Edge is home to farm animals for 4-H and educational purposes, a native plant nursery, a community garden and honeybee hives.
The Salmon Center’s Farm at Water’s Edge, U-Pick Gardens, dog park, and Union River Wildlife trails are all open to the public from dawn to dusk. Two summer camps are offered this summer: Explore the Fjord and Farm Stewards. Explore the Fjord is for kids ages 12-16 and is offered weekly on Fridays, July 15-August 19. Outdoor activities will connect participants with the local fjord through adventures and guidance. Examples of activities include sailing, learning about shellfish, tide-pooling, hiking, and painting . Salmon Center Farm Stewards is for kids ages 7-11 and is offered Tuesdays & Thursdays, June 21August 11. The Farm Stewards will receive an introduction to gardening and nutrition, learn about pollinators, wild and domestic animals, mindfulness and creativity, water systems, environmental science and restoration, salmon, and the ways these topics connect to sustainable agriculture and the environment.

This internship will expose Skokomish high school youth to the fundamentals of climate science through hands-on experience with scientific monitoring and field data collection on Hood Canal estuary and streams with scientists from DNR and HCSEG. Students will also gain experience in the lab analyzing the samples collected out in the field and explore the impacts the water quality in the Hood Canal watershed. In 2021, the White House tweeted a Fourth of July cookout would cost Americans $0.16 less than in 2020 and touted it as a victory. Will there be a similar tweet for 2022? As the United States finds itself in the grip of rising food and fuel costs, it is hard to imagine given the numbers. The American Farm Bureau Federation reports the average Fourth of July cookout will cost people living on the West Coast $81.12 for 10 people this year. The 2022 cost is up $18.21 – a nearly 30% increase from 2021. The estimated total cost for 2021 was $62.41 and $61.27 in 2020.
Midwest, South, and Northeast combined for an estimated total cost of $66.93 this year, just over $14 less than the West Coast region, making it a tale of two grocery bills.
Food estimates only tell a partial story. AAA estimates nearly 5 million people will travel more than 50 miles during the Fourth of July weekend. Adult and Youth Chorale Will be Rocking this Summer with a Pop Term. The Great Bend Chorale and Youth Chorale are recruiting singers for a playful summer term of pop acapella. Both awardwinning ensembles made their Carnegie Hall debut in 2019 and usually sing more classical fare, but this July and August it is all about having fun while rebuilding their post-pandemic sound and community with the music of the Eagles, Kate Rusby, Ben Folds, and ELO. While many members of the Chorale have continued making music virtually the past two seasons, this summer marks the first time since early 2020 that either ensemble has rehearsed in person. Now is the perfect time to join for a rare summertime term to help get acquainted, find the rhythm, and celebrate the resumption of live music before the fall term, where the Chorale will dive
