The New Normal Changed an Hour Ago Heidi McCutcheon, Chamber Director
Who could have imagined three months ago that we would be where we are today? Since the beginning of March, the world as we know it has changed drastically. The Chamber is different than it was three months ago. It’s different today than it was last week. We joke that the new normal changed an hour ago— we just don’t know it yet. We are exhausting all means to stay ahead of the curve and have quickly become quasi-experts at Economic Development Injury Loans, the Paycheck Protection Program, Unemployment, and the SharedWork program. We immediately implemented weekly webinars, partnering with the North Mason Chamber and the Economic Development Council to bring in experts from Small Business Administration, Employment Security Department, Washington Hospitality Association, and the Washington Retail Association, among others. We have worked together to develop a framework for local grants to ensure that Enterprise for Equity resources reach the businesses who will be most impacted.
The Chamber is proud to be a convener of business leaders and community influencers through this time of social need. The Chamber has proceeded to push for reasonable policies and strategies that fit our rural community. We carry that message to our elected officials and government policy makers. We continue to advocate for our businesses and their employees. For the past three months, my mornings have begun with the Mason County Public Information Officer Group to keep up on the latest public health developments, discussing government processes surrounding reopening, sharing news, and voicing concerns from our businesses and their employees. Additionally, the Chamber’s strong relationships with our congressmen, state representatives, and local
elected officials have resulted in a direct line of communication and access to decision makers and authorities on issues that matter. The Chamber is the catalyst for change in our community—and we continue to bring much needed resources to our businesses. As we move toward Phase 3 (more about that on page 7), I ask you to continue to be a champion of our community. As our feature story on page 4 shares, our businesses are surviving through this devastating shut down because of YOU. Although restaurants have begun to reopen, please keep ordering takeout to get them up the hill. As our retailers allow people through their doors, keep buying from them and promoting them online. We are all in this together and you make all the difference.

I hope this letter finds you, your family, coworkers, and friends well! In our last issue I wrote about embracing change and the positive effects that can bring to our community. When writing that article, I could have never imagined the level of change we as business owners, managers, as a community, nation, and world have experienced in the last four months. In the wake of a world-wide pandemic we have seen a dramatic fall (and recovery) in our financial markets, record level unemployment rates, beginning of a recession, and social/civil unrest. Our community has proven that resilience and commitment to our core values will carry us through these difficult times. I encourage you to lean on the expertise and professional support of our Chamber staff to bring you the latest business information and help you develop creative ways to build your business as we define our new normal. I believe that our new normal will change continuously as we move through the Governor’s Safe Start phased approach to reopening our state. I also

Meet the Entrepeneurs Bev Black, co-owner with husband Karl, Olympic Mountain Ice Cream We have nurtured our home and family-owned ice cream factory right here on the Olympic Peninsula since 1984. We passionately pack as much flavor as possible into every bite of each batch we produce. Our standard is to make the best ice cream and sorbet you can get. Every part of our operation is pure and uniform, including carefully sourced fresh ingredients. Our ice cream can be found in shops, farm stands, and restaurants around the peninsula, but our bread and butter customers are the high-end restaurants in Seattle, Tacoma, Bellevue, Olympia, and nearby metro areas. Over the years we have created and distributed over 300 divine flavors to become a PNW favorite brand.
Josh Stottlemyer, co-owner with wife Amy, Stottle Winery My wife and I had a passion for wine and our favorite thing to do was tour wineries and have a detailed experience. So, I sold my previous business in 2009 and enrolled at Northwest Wine Academy to learn all the complexities and nuances needed to launch my own winery. By 2011, Stottle Winery was manufacturing and retailing its own vintages in a large commercial space and tasting room in Lacey. A second quaint retail-only location opened along a popular strip of scenic Highway 101 in Hoodsport during 2012. Today, Stottle Winery is a fixture with loyal clientele who are surprised by the quality of our wines. Our duty as winemaker is to bring out the greatest expression of all things that influence the grape on its journey from vine to wine. We strictly bottle each of our fine wines for retail sales or online orders. We are proud to have national and regional recognition for what we do with numerous awards from prestigious wine competitions and enthusiasts. Sharon Schirman, co-owner, ISH PNW Come in! Have you been here before? We have so many neat things! I saw so many creative products at area markets and noticed people trying to track down where to get certain things. I had the idea to consolidate the assortment of homemade goods available throughout our area under one roof. Why not? Along with my co-owners Jerilee Sutton and Amy Farmer, we opened the ISH PNW storefront in downtown Shelton to offer local, independent crafters and artists a unique way to retail their products. ISH is an acronym for “In Shelton Homes.” Our mission is to represent the talent of our community by offering a viable venue to showcase and sell their creations. The merchandise – an assortment of gifts, gadgets, home décor, art, apparel, accessories, and essentials – is sold via a simple consignment agreement with our vendors. We are the alternative to buying factory items and the ultimate way to #ShopLocal as all products originate within 20 miles of here.

Coping with
COVID BLACK: The COVID-19 impact happened immediately. We had just taken on new liabilities – $100k for a new delivery truck and another $40K for a piece of equipment – the payments cost us $2,500 per month. Who would do that just to have them sit there? The phone used to ring all day; now it is unusual. We had to lay off employees who are family and others who feel like family. Our revenues are down 82% compared to same period of 2019. We have never had big savings. Like a restaurant, our revenues are enough to barely scrape by. We would not have been able to survive without the Paycheck Protection Program loan. I printed a customer roster from first quarter in a small font across multiple pages. Those hundreds of accounts are restaurants who are closed. The numbers are staggering; it is heartbreaking to consider the effects on their businesses and their employees. STOTTLEMYER: Technically, we were deemed essential as alcohol sellers and we did not have to close. That was a blessing of course, but we were
Whether selling handcrafted wine, artisan ice cream, or homemade goods, the Coronavirus does not differentiate. We recently talked to three Mason County entrepreneurs and asked them to share how they are dealing with COVID-19. Each is persevering in the face of the storm, clinging to a life raft while heading toward calmer waters. In their own words, their stories all share a common thread – the local community is to thank for the sales that are seeing them through.
The Immediate Impact no longer able to offer tastings. From what we hear, people like every wine of ours that they try. So, we had to shift to figure out how to get people wine since they were told to stay home. Most of our business is retail right out-the-door and we’ve had up to an 80% drop off in-person visits. Sales are down 20% in Lacey and Hoodsport dropped 47%; May was by far the worst month. One employee mutually agreed to a layoff.
We applied for the PPP loan and received funding; otherwise, we have been sustaining mostly due to the big percentage of local, repeat customers, and word of mouth. SCHIRMAN: The COVID-19 response was a blow since it came on the heels of our February ribbon cutting. We had literally just opened and we didn’t want this to be the end. Although I wanted to go home and bury my head; I didn’t. Instead, I immediately contacted our vendors and asked for essential items to sell. They responded by making masks, soaps, and hand sanitizers. We quickly had in-demand inventory and got the word out on social media that shopping was allowed exclusively by personal appointments. This started slow, but by Easter we were busy and selling out of essentials and replenishing stock. The biggest issue was having to dig deeper in our own pockets to keep going, but that was the only option. We were not eligible for loans or grants since our business was less than one year old.
Stay Calm and Carry On BLACK: Our local community really came through. We have many stores selling more product than usual and many restaurants are adding it as an option to carry out orders; although ice cream is hard to pack as a to-go item. We are all wearing masks and following the required health guidelines. We are busy developing a new pint flavor and have started selling on Amazon Fresh. We work late nights striving for perfection, but the volume won’t return until restaurants can open and many aren’t able to just yet. Even then, it will take time for volume to return if people can’t gather for fine dining celebrations and events where Olympic Mountain Ice Cream dessert is the final menu item served. STOTTLEMYER: Stottle Winery offered free shipping for the first time and curbside pickup with discounts. Then, we pivoted and did virtual tastings and shared them on YouTube and sold accompanying virtual tasting kits; those worked well. We mostly promoted our ourselves using email marketing and Facebook. We also tried some radio ads and paid for some exposure on NextDoor; both resulted
in some traffic. The amount of orders online went way up. We will give 50% off shipping on orders of $75 or more now that we can do tastings again. We have introduced wine flights to minimize contact which allows people to go at their own pace. SCHIRMAN: We were so new that there was not a routine way of doing things yet and we had only just began generating revenues. Our primary focus was to add vendors to add more essential items to the store. Fortunately, we were able to grow from 20 to 85 items in only 3 months. Of course, we needed to build a customer base. I am on Facebook all the time and stay active promoting the shop and unveiling products live online. We used this platform as a way for customers to schedule private appointments; it worked well and the word spread. Even now, we have one customer that drives from Olympia once per week at a dedicated time for a shopping spree. Everything in the store is carefully arranged to meet social distancing requirements and we wipe down and sanitize after every customer visit.
A lesson with a small silver lining BLACK: Thankfully, we didn’t have to entirely close. Again, we are just so happy about local support. So many more quarts are selling around Mason County, which is unusual compared to by-thescoop containers. Word of mouth is creating a buzz and has prompted some folks to drive straight to the farm where we have a list of available flavors and we run grab it. Our biggest lesson is to just be happy for today and appreciate what you have, because it can change so fast. STOTTLEMYER: For sure, a silver lining is that more
people are buying online, but what is even more heartening to us is people who came here just to support us and spend their wine money with a local winery rather than a big box store or grocery. It has also been good to bounce ideas off other business owners and help each other as a sounding board. At Stottle Winery, we spend a lot of time building relationships, providing stellar service, and having meaningful conversations with patrons. That emphasis became significant during COVID-19 with the realization of how important it is to cultivate those personal relationships with customers.
SCHIRMAN: Unquestionably, the silver lining to all of this has been that people know ISH PNW is here and they come here to shop. Already we have over 1,100 likes on our Facebook page! By far, our biggest lesson was to be flexible. The saying “making it up as I go” is our new motto. We truly have discovered how much talent is right here in our community and our goal is to increase our vendor count to 100 by the end of July. Vendors have experienced their own financial difficulty; we’ve received thank you notes for giving them the ability to earn supplemental income through our store. They matter to us a great deal. BEAUTIFICATION EFFORTS Bloom
Mason County is well known for its lush surroundings and for its authentic small town feel. The Chamber is proud to again partner with City of Shelton and Hood Canal Communications to uphold that tradition. The lovely flower baskets that grace our streets have been hung with care—providing a sunny scene to locals and a warm welcome to visitors. Contributions made to the summer beautification efforts allow us to promote a vibrant community and to honor those friends and family who shared our sense of love and pride in Shelton.
WITH SUPPORT OF LOCAL COMMUNITY This year, a passionate citizen sparked a campaign to pay tribute to the high school seniors who were unable to celebrate their milestone year in a traditional manner. Dawn Myers quickly rallied support from parents, friends, and alumni to raise almost $3,500 to create recognition banners for spring sports seniors. The Chamber is proud to partner with her as well as City of Shelton, Hood Canal Communications, Mason PUD 3, Cooper Studios, and The Shopper to see these additional banners designed, produced, and prominently displayed. The banners were hung along the fence at Oakland Bay Junior High School on Wallace-Kneeland
until June 24, at which time they were provided to the graduates as a memento. Both the summer flower baskets and the Christmas street decorations would not be possible without our community’s support. Between paying for watering the flower baskets and the energy for the Christmas lights, the Chamber’s cost is around $18,000 annually. Generous contributions from businesses and individuals underwrite the program’s tremendous cost. In addition to donations made towards beautification overall, flower baskets may be sponsored for $275 each. The $275 offsets the cost of materials
and maintenance for a single season. Citizens who contribute at that level may choose to sponsor a basket for their business, in honor, or memoriam of a loved one. Phasing into a Safe Start
The safety of our community continues to be our priority. Supporting local businesses, especially during this difficult time of recovery, will help our businesses bounce back and our economy to stabilize. The Chamber believes that a strong business community creates a healthy economy and that our quality of life in Mason County is driven by the businesses who choose to make this place home.
Phase 1 Some outdoor recreation is allowed but the state’s ban on large gatherings will remain and only certain businesses, including construction, landscaping, automobile sales, and curbside pick-up for retail sales are permitted.
You can help by shopping local, following health guidelines, and providing grace and understanding as businesses adapt to and navigate new guidelines being required by the state.
Phase 2
Outdoor recreation of five or less are permitted along with in-store purchases retailers, with some restrictions, real estate transactions and hair salons and barbers can resume their operations. Restaurants can re-open provided they can accommodate 50% of their capacity with tables that seat no more than five people.
Phase 3 The size of outdoor groups grows to up to 50 people and non-essential travel is permitted; the capacity of restaurants grows to 70 percent, but tables cannot seat more than 10 people; movie theaters can reopen.
As businesses reopen, please respect and follow individual business’s rules for social distancing, sanitary procedures, and safety measures. Many businesses have been closed for months, and it may take time to rebuild their stock, inventory, and supplies. We also know that businesses may not be able to operate at full capacity and service may be slower until they are fully staffed. We ask you to stay informed, treat each other with respect, shop locally, have patience, and exercise thoughtfulness. It has been a long haul from Stay Home, Stay Healthy over to Safe Start. Washington counties are moving through a phased reopening county-by-county. With the possibility of moving to Phase 3 looming, we know you are wondering:
Phase 4 Public interactions resume with physical distancing; gatherings of more than 50 people are allowed; clubs, concerts, and large sporting events are permitted.
What does it mean? Mason County was approved on May 23 to move to Phase 2, allowing some businesses and entrepreneurs to restart our stalled economy. That step allowed for all retailers to resume in-store sales along with certain restrictions to allow for social distancing. Restaurants, hair salons, and barbers are also be allowed to resume as long as they can show they have implemented measures to limit the spread of COVID-19 and are complying with state guidelines. On Monday, Mason County applied to move into Phase 3. Although legally eligible to apply on June 13, the state changed official requirements for local approval. As the next business day fell on June 15, the county commissioners met first thing to approve the application. As we go to press, no word had yet been received from the governor’s office, though it is hopeful that we may receive approval to move to Phase 3 in time for Father’s Day (June 21).

Virtual Business After Hours Provides Connection Builds Relationships While the Chamber’s Business After Hours are perhaps best known for creative themes, tasty hors d' oeuvres, and cold beverages, the networking social is truly all about people. While Business After Hours have taken on a different structure given recent public health guidelines, at its heart the program is still what it has always been: a place to share ideas, meet fellow members of the business community, and strengthen existing relationships. Business After Hours are held on the second Wednesday of the month on location. Before the pandemic was in full swing, Martha Reed Foundation hosted us with Chicken & Jo’s at The Colonial House on March 11.
On May 13, Our Community Credit Union opened the (digital) door for folks to talk about “Anything but COVID,” “Inspired Social Media Strategies,” “Work From Home Life,” and so much more. OCCU partnered with The Hardware Distillery to send a goodie bag out to each attendee, complete with a Cozy Home recipe and a coupon for a sample bottle of (what else?) hand sanitizer. Hood Canal Communication hosted our June 10 event to a happy crowd via Zoom. The Chamber’s next Business After Hours will be held on Wednesday, July 8, with Beko’s Trees, LLC & Wood Carving.
Hoodsport Visitor Information Center Masks Up, Opens Up After decades of providing tourists, hikers, and outdoor enthusiasts with information about the beautiful Lake Cushman, Hood Canal, Olympic National Park and Forest, our beloved Hoodsport Visitor Information Center has been on a two month furlough following the Stay Home, Stay Healthy order. Just recently, the visitor center reopened their doors. To ensure the safety of both staff and visitors, only one group of visitors may enter the building at a given time, with a maximum of five visitors per group. As visitors arrive, they will be prompted to send a message securing their place in line. An automated response will give an estimate of their wait time and

an additional response will be sent when it is their turn to enter the visitor center for assistance. All visitors are required to wear masks. If you are an outdoors enthusiast, you may be familiar with the information center’s layout: you step into the visitor center and are immediately greeted by our hard-working and knowledgeable volunteers at the information desk, where now you will find a plexiglass shield to ensure your safety as well as our volunteers’. Here, you’ll find access to information, maps, passes, and more. A large topography map takes up the majority of one wall, a favorite feature of visitors and locals alike. Another
two walls offer maps and brochures of local and regional offerings. “I am so happy to be back,” said Samantha Franklin, who serves as the visitor center’s volunteer coordinator along with her husband, Mark. “We are looking forward to assisting visitors and enhancing their enjoyment our wonderful area. We sincerely appreciate their help in following safety measures to keep us all safe and healthy.” The Hoodsport Visitor Information Center is located at 150 N Lake Cushman Rd, Hoodsport. The center is open Thursday-Monday.

Every Saturday, 9:00a-2:00p, Shelton Farmers Market transforms Evergreen Square on Railroad Ave into a pop-up for local talent, farmers, and crafters. You will find produce, plant starts, soaps, crystals, cookies, leatherwork, and more. EBT tokens may be purchased at the market booth, some vendors also offer credit card payments, and all booths accept cash. Skyline Drive-In is open Friday-Wednesday, rain or shine, for back-to-back showings. Reservations are currently required but for each $5 reservation fee, you’ll receive a $5 coupon to the snack bar—good
through the end of the season. Make reservations and check out what is now showing at skylinedrivein.com. Don’t forget! You will need to show your receipt with order number at the box office to gain entry. Gates open at 7:00p and the movie starts when the sun goes down. Guests do not need to stay for the second feature and the reservation ensures that you can arrive during intermission if you do not wish to watch the first movie. Vance Creek Railriders is tentatively set to open for the season on June 20. Pedal the rails on the former Simpson Logging rail line for a 12-mile round trip from Camp 1 to Shelton. As you pedal the multi-seat railrider along the track you will have the opportunity to see wildlife, old growth, and new forests as well as diverse meadows teeming with wildflowers, moss, and ferns. You will pedal down across the winding Goldsborough Creek and return up the gradual grade. This gentle, but vigorous ride is suitable for all ages. If you tire on the adventure, there is a motorized cart to give an extra push up the hills. If you’re looking for a spot to get away, Mason Lake Recreation Area is a beautiful retreat with majestic trees towering over its campground and sunlight reflecting off the water, creating a picturesque location for outdoor fun. One of the largest lakes in the county, Mason Lake is open year-round for fishing. Laze on the beach or splash in the freshwater waves. Boating, water skiing, canoeing and jet skiing are popular on the sparkling mountain lake. An annual permit is required to access the private park.
