Stars Shine Bright at Chamber Annual Awards Gala The best of Mason County turned out for the community’s largest business affair on Friday, January 18. The evening celebrated the Shelton-Mason County Chamber of Commerce’s 96th year with 400 of Mason County’s finest business owners, professionals, elected officials, and non-profit employees gathered to celebrate and give tribute to the successes of 2018 while anxiously awaiting the announcement of 2018’s award winners. The event began with a sparkling Champagne Social courtesy of Reception Sponsor Beko’s Tree Service. Then, after moving into the dramatically draped and lighted room, Melanie Bakala of State Farm Insurance hopped on the mic with South Sound YMCA’s Kyle Cronk and laid down the beat of 2018’s accomplishments to the tune of “Can’t Touch This” by MC Hammer. It was better than can be imagined. Guests received a warm welcome from executive director Heidi McCutcheon who introduced those who made the evening possible, including Premier Sponsor, Little Creek Casino Resort’s Chief Operating Officer Michael Peters, who shared his excitement for the awards. Media Sponsor The Shopper then took the stage, and rounding out the night was Photo Sponsor Cooper Studios, who provided a photo booth in addition to capturing the night’s festivities. A stunning four course meal showcased the expertise of the kitchen staff and featured specialty fare and tasty local ingredients thanks to course sponsor Edward Jones - Karen Schade, Financial Advisor. Retired Mason County District Court Judge Victoria Meadows took the stage and invited the 2019 Chamber Board of Trustees forward for the formal installation. Outgoing President of the Board Will Johnson thanked Past President John Lester for his years of service on the board and presented him with a personalized gift. Also retiring from their board terms were Drew MacEwen (Falcon Financial, Inc.), Julie Nichols (Whitehouse & Nichols), Wes Taylor (Taylor Shellfish), Mark West (Little Creek Casino Resort), and Karen Schade. To begin the awards portion, Will and Heidi announced the award nominees and revealed the winners, beginning with Will Johnson’s President’s Choice Award winner, Ray Frederick of Garage Sale Maniacs. Volunteer of the Year recognizes an individual who has largely contributed to the Chamber’s programs and activities. This person must serve on one or more Chamber committees. Making the list of people who give their time, talents, energies, and expertise were Stephanie Boysen of Bella Acres, Jennifer Owens of Peninsula Credit Union, and Teresa Gilman formerly of Maple Glen Senior Living. Teresa Gilman won this year’s award. Her family came to the stage to accept the award on her behalf. New this year, Rookie of the Year recognizes the best business opening a storefront or beginning operations within the past two years who fulfilling a gap in service, retail, or operation benefitting the Mason County community at large. The two newcomers making this year’s ballot included Craft Pie & Art Bar and Northwest Clothing Co. The inaugural award went to Northwest Clothing Co. and owner Jessica Smith.

Boss of the Year, another addition to the award lineup, recognizes an individual who empowers their employees and is an example of leadership and/ or management excellence. The inaugural slate of candidates was Holly Cahoon of 2nd Street Design Studio, Kevin & Kathy Dorcy of Urraco Coffee Co., Mike Oblizalo of Hood Canal Communications, and Jeff Slakey of iFiber One News Radio. The 2018 Boss of the Year award went to Kevin & Kathy Dorcy. An individual who has made outstanding contributions to the business community and the community at large is honored as Citizen of the Year. This person gives freely of their time, talent, energy and expertise. Our great thanks and appreciation goes to the three deserving nominees Tom Beben, Julie Rowan, and Jim Morell. The crowd rose to their feet as the announcement was made of 2018’s Citizen of the Year, Tom Beben of Smoking Mo’s. Volunteer of the year nominees STEPHANIE BOYSEN of Bella Acres opened event venue Bella Acres after spending years as an emergency services volunteer, active parent, and a successful business venturist. As a Chamber Ambassador, Stephanie volunteers to assist new businesses and serves as the welcoming committee and cheerleader for nearly every event. With a busy calendar of her own, she never hesitates to lend a helping hand when asked. She frequently offers her time, know-how, and equipment. Her kind heart and humble nature make her an approachable ambassador, a strong volunteer, and generous entrepreneur. Stephanie was also a volunteer firefighter and EMT for nearly 18 years and is currently a member of the Mason County CISM team. Despite spending most of her time working at her 40-acre venue, she has excelled as a part of our community and contributing to helping make our city and county the wonderful place it is to laugh, live, and play.
TERESA GILMAN was longtime Mason County resident and proud SHS alum. Her career path centered on serving others, from being an x-ray technician to working with senior citizens at Maple Glen Senior Living. She loved her family and friends immensely and married the love of her life, Bob, in 2005. Teresa was a vivacious, giving person and a solid supporter of Mason County community events, including youth sports and senior activities. She served on numerous Chamber committees and was very involved in planning the Chamber’s Community Expo Street Fair and the Golf Tournament. When asked who she thought of as a mentor, she answered, “Mother Teresa. If we all acted upon kindness and to strive on a daily basis to pay it forward… it would lead to a major positive impact in our community and abroad.” Teresa was well known for sharing her talent and a warm smile whenever and wherever needed. While she passed away on October 31, her example continues to inspire those who knew her. JENNIFER OWENS of Peninsula Credit Union has truly made Mason County home since moving here over twenty years ago. Having grown up in the hospitality industry, Jennifer transitioned well in to customer service working at Safeway for years before joining the team at Peninsula Credit Union, where she is now the Branch Manager. In her position at the Credit Union she volunteers with Bank On Mason, Asset Building Coalition, Relay For Life, and with the Financial Reality Fair at Shelton High School. A past president of the Chamber Board, Jennifer continues to serves as the Ambassador Chairperson, is an active participant of Member Services, and serves on several event committees. Outside of all of that, she enjoys spending time with her family.

2018 President of the Chamber Board Will Johnson began the evening’s awards presentation by announcing his selection of the President’s Choice Award recipient. “A year ago when I was sitting at one of these tables and watched the President’s Choice award being presented, I realized that I already knew who my choice would be for this year’s recipient. We all know that you can’t give away what you don’t possess and the same is true of wisdom. Some people have some, some people have a lot, and some people devote their lives to the pursuit of wisdom so intently that when they speak, those who listen have their lives forever changed. This year’s President’s Choice recipient was born to change lives. This individual has spoken to crowds of thousands and people would listen with great attention, but his biggest influence has came from his willingness to spend countless hours teaching, coaching, and building up individuals, all while expecting and receiving no personal gain. This individual’s influence continues to grow and each new generation continues to benefit because of his coaching and his personal devotion to an uncommon life. Marriages are stronger, finances are better, leaders gain wisdom, and children leave their parents homes wiser and better prepared. I do not know of a single person, who has walked side by side with more people on their journey from ordinary to greatness than my friend and mentor to many, Mr. Ray Frederick.”

HOLLY CAHOON of 2nd Street Design Studio was raised in a military family and lived all over the world before moving back to Shelton, where she graduated from Shelton High. She finished beauty school in 1980 and went to work in the then secondgeneration family business. Holly purchased both the business and the building from her parents sixteen years later and has continued to build the salon; expanding into the adjacent space and currently having 15 employees. Holly recognizes the importance of keeping pace in the ever-changing beauty industry investing heavily in professional development courses, educational opportunities for her stylists, and partnerships with trusted brands. Holly encourages her team to support the local the community and frequently donates services, products, and money. When asked if there was one thing she wished earlier she knew earlier, it was to work smarter and not harder. She claims herself a big roll-up-your-sleeves worker and, while she says that is a good characteristic to have, she has learned to work smarter. One stylist said to Holly, “My goal is to be as busy as you,” and sure enough, Holly showed her how to do it, sustain it, and accomplish it. In her own words, “Kill ‘em with kindness, be kind, show kind, and do kind, and everything else will follow.”
KEVIN & KATHY DORCY of Urraco Coffee Co. ask much of their employees. As in, they ask for their input in the decision-making process, they ask about what problems arise in the workplace and how they can remedy it as a team, and they ask that their employees be creative and introduce new ideas to the business. Both 1971 Shelton High School graduates, Kevin and Kathy have different work histories; Kathy has worked at Shelton Family Medicine for 40 years, the past 30 as the clinic manager, while Kevin has been mostly self-employed, building several homes and completing numerous remodels as a construction maintenance manager before ‘retiring’ in 2017. Kevin and Kathy encourage an open-door attitude, welcoming ideas and concerns, believing that the employees are their business.

MIKE OBLIZALO of Hood Canal Communications believes the first step in empowering employees is to make sure they are in the correct position. If they are, he believes they will excel on their own. By challenging his employees with new tasks and giving opportunity, he believes that individual success will follow. A graduate of North Mason High School (where he simultaneously received a twoyear degree in industrial electronics), Mike received multiple degrees pertaining to the telecommunications industry and is currently the Vice President and General Manager at HCC. He speaks of his grandfather, his mentor, and it is plain to see where he adopted his mentality. Mike says, “I was fortunate enough to work with my grandfather until my late teens. He always put his family, friends, and community above the prospect of money. He taught me that strong values and that hard work pays in many different ways.” As a figurehead in an industry undergoing constant change, Mike continues to ingrain his employees with the knowledge, confidence, and trust needed for a successful workforce.
JEFF SLAKEY of iFiber One News Radio worked his way up from a part-time to the and then a then full-time announcer all the way to General Manager in the course of a decade. After graduating from Western Washington University with a B.A. in Communications and attaining his Radio Broadcasting Certification from Bates Technical College, Jeff started working with a goal of working his way up to a morning show in 10 years. He accomplished it in three. When asked about his process of interacting with the many faces of Mason County, he said, “I try to remember that everyone I interact with looks at life a little differently, has various and diverse backgrounds and experiences, and has found or settled into different stations in life.” With this he leads with the following tenants: respect for others, an open ear, open mind, and open door. Currently the host of “Daybreak with Jeff Slakey,” he believes in giving employees enough direction and support to accomplish any goal they undertake, to instill a confidence in pushing themselves to be as good as they can be, and being the example of expressing a positive attitude and strong work ethic.

Business OF THE YEAR 2018 NOMINEES BRADY TRUCKING & LANDSCAPE SUPPLY started as a one-man operation in 1983, when co-owner Jeff Brady worked around the clock hauling wood chips between various mills. Today, the company manufactures and provides dozens of wood byproducts and composts to retail landscape supply stores across the state. In 2013, Brady Trucking created the Helping Hands annual event donating to their customers’ selection of local non-profits, reaching nearly $6,500 this year. In addition, they donate hundreds of cubic yards of landscape to support fundraising efforts throughout Mason County. Continuing to grow each year, Brady Trucking now employs 35 full-time workers from truck drivers and machinery operators to office staff and laborers. When asked who they believe are their biggest community supporters are, they responded “The homeowners and the landscapers are so important to what we do and how we conduct our business. Retail can be tough at times, in our experiences with them, the good outweighs the bad by far.” CALI CUTZ is an independently owned, home-style barber shop perched near the top of Olympic Hwy South. Owned and operated by Ramon Carrion, he and his team of skilled stylists not only provide some of the best looking fades and styles, but also numerous opportunities to give back to local schools and the community at large. Ramon started cutting hair when he was 14 years old and what he though was a hobby turned into a passion. Since then that passion was turned into his team at Cali Cutz, which he considers “not just a business I own, but my greatest achievement.” Having sponsored and donated to SHS cheer, baseball, and football, Cali Cutz also hosts an annual free haircut and school supply day where donations for needy families are collected and distributed. This shop “is not just a local business, it is an example of how dreams can come true, from cutting hair out of a garage to owning a successful business and developing into a community partner.”

SIERRA PACIFIC INDUSTRIES is a family-held, family-run forest products company with numerous mills across the country, most recently opening here in Shelton. The new advanced-technology mill, manufacturing facility, fabrication shop, and trucking division currently provide 270 Mason County residents with long term, family-wage jobs. Along with its dedicated workforce, many employees also serve on local boards, including the Chamber & EDC and advisory boards for local schools among others. Their foundation recently pledged to support the YMCA at a leadership level, which adds to donations of over $75,000 made just this year to various local philanthropic organizations in Mason County. SPI also provides donated lumber and construction materials for Habitat for Humanity, Homes for Our Troops, and construction classes for three local high schools. As an admittedly recent addition to the area, SPI’s message to Mason County is that they truly hope residents see that they are committed to this community long-term, and will work tirelessly and diligently to continue to be part of the revitalization of this great city and county, and the selfless folk who make it what it is.
TAYLOR SHELLFISH is a local family-run shellfish farm at the center of international trade. Founded in 1890, the company has made Shelton its home for four generations. Self-described as focusing on growth, the company has succeeded in bringing tide to table. Taylor has expanded their already broad product line to include geoduck, mussels, clams, and, most famously, oysters. The company of more than 600 dedicated employees is renowned for high-class shellfish production and cuisine. Taylor Shellfish provides unwavering support to the Chamber and Skookum Rotary’s OysterFest, among many other community events and organizations. They have strong partnerships with local schools and are particularly proud of their Farm Internship Program workforce development efforts. Similar to their support of the community, they describe the shellfish industry itself as communal in nature, sharing with other businesses best practices, concerns, and aid. This cooperative nature serves as yet another testament to the decades of community-building and devotion that Taylor Shellfish Farms continues to pump into the heart of Mason County.

ROOKIE OF THE YEAR 2018 NOMINEES CRAFT PIE & ART BAR is owned and operated by Smoking Mo’s Monica Beben, whose goal is to cultivate a haven for art creators and enthusiasts of all ages to share, inspire, and nurture their ideas and talents. The quaint setting serves as a backdrop for seasonally inspired sweet and savory pies, signature cocktails, and a gathering place for all things crafty. In addition to frequent classes, Craft plays host to cocktail pairings, book clubs, and many more community gatherings. The idea first came to Monica when she noticed the small number of venues that families could enjoy with their children. Craft has been gaining traction and finding success but she’s also proud of the customers that walk in with the courage of showing off their own works of art, wholly embracing their creative growth, and nurturing a love and appreciation for art. “I’ve made a career out of showing love and respect for the people and places that are important to me,” Monica said. “My menu is a tribute to the strong creative women in my life, and the inspiration drawn straight from the hearts and hands of my mother and grandmother. It is a great honor to be able to introduce their work through my own hands to my customers.” NORTHWEST CLOTHING CO. is a trendy, yet affordable women’s clothing store featuring clothing sized S-3X, women’s shoes, and accessories. Opened by Jessica Smith, this shop has quickly become a favorite for last minute outfits, styling, and gifts. With a sweet sitting area for kids, well-appointed dressing rooms, and racks upon racks of new clothes, this modern retail space is a gem in the downtown area. Jessica brings much longed for fashion to Mason County and is proud of the fact that everything she sells costs no more than $50. Jessica opened the doors of Northwest Clothing Co. at the end of 2017 and became an instant hit in the community with fresh styles. She’s also given back to the community through donations to local fundraisers, schools, and churches. The relationship between community and business is like no other, and while success is not always easily generated or mended, in her own words, Jessica says, “Success looks different to everyone, but… I have a job I love and get to interact with the amazing people of this community every day.”

CITIZEN OF THE YEAR 2018 NOMINEES TOM BEBEN of Smoking Mo’s settled in Mason County in 2006 and opened the restaurant’s doors in 2007. Tom views his business as a platform to help in fundraising and to support community events. Just this year he spearheaded efforts to raise monies for ALS, HOST Students, SHS Booster Club, scholarship fundraisers, Shelton Rotary Club (of which he is a member), and countless others. Through his position as a Chamber board member, Tom created Blues & Brews Festival that features local fare, beverages, and talent. Tom says, “It’s been an honor and privilege to be part of this community. We were welcomed with open arms 11 years ago and have grown both in and with this town. We’re so happy to call Shelton home.” Tom’s humility is evident in his declaration that the thing he is most proud of is setting an example for his young daughter Grace to fully embrace her community and to give back whenever possible, not only by caring for his family, businesses, and their needs, but also in creating avenues to help others in need. JIM MORRELL of Peninsula Credit Union has served credit union members for 25 years, serving locally as CEO for the past 6 years. Jim’s motivation for serving the community and members is to improve people’s financial lives. To educate himself for service, Jim participates in many civic roles with the Shelton School District, The Community Foundation of South Puget Sound, the City of Shelton, and the Shelton-Mason County Chamber of Commerce. Jim has also served as a board member for Graduation Matters Shelton, Board Treasurer for The Community Foundation of South Puget Sound, YMCA’s Capital Campaign Executive Cabinet, and Chair for the Shelton Skookum Rotary Foundation. “My grandfather, Elmer Anderson, will be a lifelong inspiration,” Jim said. “He shared many examples and ways of putting service before self, the importance of giving back, and how hard work benefits the communities you are part of every day.” JULIE ROWAN of Belco Forest Products & Kristmas Town Kiwanis came to Washington State for a simple visit in October 2007. Within six months, she had moved here, started a family, and immersed herself in the community. Starting as a “data entry monkey” at Belco Forest Products, Julie rose to the position of inside sales manager while also becoming involved with Kristmas Town Kiwanis and other local organizations. She has served as Lieutenant Governor for Division 38 of Kiwanis, volunteered with Relay for Life and Cascade Land Conservancy, and is the PTA President at her son’s school. This year, Julie hopes to bring Day of Champions to Mason County, a one-day modified track and field event for kids with disabilities. Growing up, Julie was surrounded with people who helped mold her mentality. From her French teacher in high school helping her to afford a would-be exchange program trip to Paris to the numerous non-profits in her hometown that awarded her scholarships for college, she knew she wanted to give back in the same fashion. “I couldn’t sit here and brag about the things I’m involved in if not for them. I am only as strong as those who support me.”
