TigerPLY™ Applications & Plywood Nomenclature Much confusion has been evident in recent years regarding industry jargon, plywood applications, overlapping and seemingly contradictory de nitions, and substitutability of product. The primary use of TigerPLY™ has always been focused on high-end, industrial applications. TigerPLY™ is produced and designed with several combinations of core and face species. Producing high-performance panels demand a strict focus on core engineering. SFI’s efforts have established new benchmarks in the industry. Some of our panels, such as our TigerPLY™ Marine Grade, RX Core and Euro Poplar “EDGE”, are among the world’s top performing panels. To achieve such high performance we use only the highest grade of plantation grown hardwoods for the core veneer. These core veneers are processed in some of the newest and most modern plywood mills utilizing ultra-high compression with the most advanced resins. Complementing a highlyreliant, carefully calibrated core, the face species used for industrial panels is carefully chosen for consistency in color and texture. Attributes customers nd necessary for nishing or laminating applications. Low color variation of the face species minimizes alteration of a nish coating. This is especially important regarding white or light colors of paint or lamination materials. Texture is also important in the preparation of the surface for these applications, as the end goal is to ensure a nished panel does not telegraph imperfections or rough grain to the surface coatings. Thus, the faces need to be chosen for performance, good bonding potential, and tight tolerance levels for secondary manufacturing. TigerPLY™ Industrial panels are generally optioned with Birch, Pine, Poplar, or Okoume, species generally consistent in color and texture, and available from sustainable sources, such as plantations and tree farms.

So what is Industrial Plywood? Industrial Plywood has been around for decades, serving as a key resource to the US industrial and commercial industries for several generations. One of the main characteristics of an industrial panel is a hardwood core, maximizing panel performance. These industrial panels have become more important to the market with the evolution and proliferation of new machinery such as high-speed CNC routers that demand ever-rising standards of quality in panel performance. In turn, these increasing demands have led to more complex global supply chains, as the hardwood ber necessary for commercial production of industrial plywood is generally found outside the US. Therefore, the majority of industrial plywood is imported to the US. Some of the plywood historically recognized in this category are: • Russian Birch (Baltic Birch). • Luan or Lauan - This includes a large number of tropical species that are harvested from Oceania regions. • China Birch - Although China imported the majority of the Birch from Russia, it typically utilized a fast-growing plantation Poplar for the core, producing a more cost competitive panel to Russian Birch. • Okoume (Marine Plywood) - Typically produced in Europe with
veneers sourced from Africa.
Structural Plywood is generally produced in high-speed production facilities throughout the world with softwood veneers and waterproof (exterior, phenolic) resins. These panels are used for a wide range of applications, but typically utilize softwood veneers, with a focus on construction. Softwoods are grown in the US and around the world. Structural plywood is manufactured domestically, and also imported for US Markets.
Decorative Plywood is a special category with a focus on applications such as high-end furniture and cabinetry. This Decorative plywood is designed and produced speci cally with non-coniferous North American Hardwoods, unparalleled in the world for its value in appearance with fancy hardwood faces such as Red Oak, Maple, Cherry, Walnut, etc. These species are prized by designers and architects for their color, character, texture, etc. The advantage to the craftsman is the value of utilizing this decorative fancy plywood instead of solid hardwood. This lowers the cost to the craftsman, as only a fraction of the hardwood is required to face the plywood. These panels are produced domestically with an inner core of low cost, nonperforming softwood. The vast majority of decorative plywood consumed in the North American markets is produced in the United States.

AFRICA Okoume - Marine & Industrial Plywood Over the previous two years, SFI has spearheaded a mass effort to develop, nurture, and build a robust product offering out of Gabon. In 2018 we introduced an all-new TigerPlyÂŽ Marine Grade Plywood to the North American market. This product, and the myriad efforts that went into producing it, were some of our proudest achievements to date. It has been enthusiastically welcomed by distributors and numerous master craftsmen who have enjoyed working with the whole piece, highly stable and lightweight Okoume. Just as rewarding as the product and market development has been our experiences with Gabon, and its people that we've been able to share with our customers. From meetings with village elders in the most remote stretches of the country to lunches with Forestry Ministry personnel in vibrant Libreville to getting stuck in the jungles while auditing the logging operations, our time on the ground is never uneventful. Yet, just as importantly, we have witnessed numerous infrastructure projects, continuous job creation, and further industrial developments in the forestry sector over the past two years. These positive economic developments on the forestry front are occurring alongside parallel efforts of environmental and ecological conservation. Gabon's leadership in forest management incorporates conservation plans, vast networks of protected national parks, and a 2022 deadline for nationwide FSC certi cation. This is part of the integrated framework that will ensure Gabon's precious natural resource will be protected for generations to come. In September 2018, President H.E. Ali Bongo Ondimba took this giant leap forward of ensuring sustainability by targeting 2022 as the year all concessions would need to be FSC certi ed.

Following in January 2020, the Gabonese Minister of Water and Forests, Professor Lee White, signed a cooperation agreement with FSC, stating, "I am convinced that FSC certi cation will help forestry companies at all levels to improve their practices in this sector. It will also represent a marketing asset for the sale of their products, as buyers will be con dent that Gabonese timber products are not from illegal logging." SFI has worked diligently in conjunction with government authorities, NGOs, and responsible stakeholders to not only improve sustainability measures within Gabon, but also to boost the country's global reputation. In 2019 SFI introduced a partnership with StarPly to build the continent's premier plywood mill. Throughout 2020, we supplied industry-leading lamination-grade panels to several of our closest customers. StarPly's success story garnered international media attention. In addition to our exclusive partnership for the North American market, they have expanded their reach throughout Europe and the Middle East.

StarPly is already FSC-certi ed, has attained CE2+ for export to the EU, and, lastly, achieved KOMO certi cation, possibly the world's most stringent and highly-regarded quality standard. The continuous strain on resources in other regions of the world was one of the primary drivers behind our initial ventures into Gabon. Our mill partnerships were born from our analysis of the resource availability, coupled with the aforementioned forestry management practices and sustainability measures being undertaken.

In the spring of 2021 we are excited to introduce our next venture in Gabon, one of which will see the development of two additional mills out tted speci cally to produce thin panels. SFI always knew that the size and diameter of Okoume logs would be ideal for thinner panels, mimicking how these panels used to be made in Southeast Asia. Yet, putting all the pieces together to bring a project like this to fruition has been a challenging endeavor. We are con dent the panels we will be introducing to the market in 2021 will meet the most exacting industry standards. Given the singular composition characteristics - whole piece cores, uniform species, etc. - will be unparalleled in the marketplace.

Araucaria (Hoop Pine) A prominent feature of Queensland and the Brisbane suburban skyline, Araucaria is known locally as Hoop Pine due to the unique hoops of bark that grow on the trunk. Interestingly, this timber resource was the rst exported product of the 19th century settlements in the area. Our recent travels throughout the Araucaria plantations and forests of Queensland highlighted ef cient logging operations coupled with the mentioned forest management practices. Afore, Our partnership with Hancock Queensland Plantation (HQP) to introduce this species to the Global market highlights another success story of SFI’s vertically integrated global supply chains. As with any project of this scale many obstacles had to be overcome. Joint efforts between SFI and HQP’s on-the-ground operations team as well as the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries helped eliminate many of the barriers encountered in our initial trial period and, over time, have yielded outstanding results which we’ve been proud to share with some of our select customers.

BRAZIL Brazilian Elliottis Pine: 60 Years of Plantation Management The dissemination of forest plantations with the Pine genus in southern Brazil was initially under local government incentives, which implied the granting of resources to speci c areas with less productive potential. Pine silviculture in southern Brazil was a process instituted by the country’s development strategy in the 60s and 70s. The plantation forests support a production chain that is fundamental to the Brazilian economy. Although some species of the Pine genus are considered invasive exotics, they contribute environmentally, socially, and economically to the development of Brazil's southern region, given the characteristics of the planting and management process coupled with the production of a sustainable, renewable resource. In fact, sustainable forest management supported by technological and genetic development is one of the Brazilian sector's global competitiveness pillars to ensure the country's notable ranking among the top pulp, plywood, and paper producers worldwide. The use and application of Pine wood over the past three decades have grown substantially, forming a fundamental component of a booming sector of the Brazilian economy. One of the main species of Pine planted in southern Brazil that SFI has included in the 2021 Catalog is Elliottis Pine due to its excellent adaptability to South Brazilian conditions. The Elliottis pine panels have proven to be a solid performer for our line of Structural and Industrial panels.

The Amazon forest is one of the largest suppliers of tropical native timber to the world market. However, considering a new trade and the environmental scenario that has been delineated for our planet and the worldwide pressures to preserve the Amazon rainforest, the forest planted with native species of fast growth in northern Brazil has proven a viable economical alternative. Among the many species, the Paricá (Schizolobium amazonicum) is one of the most promising. Native to the Amazon biome, Paricá is a fast-growing tree that has been winning the industry of Mato Grosso. The species, which is also known as “PINHO CUIABANO”, has a good potential in wood supply compared to eucalyptus, a tree of Australian origin commonly used in reforestation. Recently, paricá has been used to recover degraded pasture areas in the Amazon region, assisting immensely with nitrogen xation and soil fertility. It has also been recommended for this purpose on land degraded by mining activity over the decades. Its uses are multitudinous in the region – it is a tree that can be grown with other agricultural crops such as coffee or cocoa in the rst three years of planting, generating extra income for the producer. Unlike the foreign species, Paricá does not have branches in the rst seven meters of the trunk, which provides better-quality veneers without knots or holes. Paricá presents basic wood density between 0.25 and 0.40 g/cm³ and is considered a light wood, having a thick to medium texture that is ideal for the production of plywood veneers.

Parica - An Emerging Environmental Triumph in Brazilian Silvicultur

CHINA Poplar TigerPLY™ continues to secure plantation Poplar as one of our long-term sustainable resources. One of those resources is the ShenSen Forestry Development Company. It’s probably no accident that change is embedded in the word challenge. Growth is clearly among the most challenging changes in this or any era. As the population increases, demands rise and industry is constantly retooling to meet the needs of its customers. Along the way we cannot forget the frailty of our resources. We remember that the environment is losing its ability to support and sustain the growing global population, in no small part due to the very needs that this population requires. Sometimes it seems like there is no solution, and sometimes, a heart-warming story emerges that restores our faith in mankind. In the development of our TigerPLY family of products we were presented with an opportunity to join a visionary environmental initiative, and we're honored to participate. TigerPLY’s supply partnership with one of the Original United Nations (UN) Plantation projects in Shandong Province, Northern China. This plantation is one of the key sources of ber for the production of many of the plywood products we supply to our clientele – some of whom are the leaders in big box retail and others who are major suppliers to the cabinet and furniture industries.

The UN Steps In at Shandon More than 40 years ago, the UN undertook a plantation project in the Shandong region to achieve stabilization of the shifting sand dunes to bring normalcy to the region. The positive impact has been immense. Today, three decades later, the area has a thriving economy. The plantation started by the UN is now FSC certi ed – a certi cation that did not even exist when the rst trees were planted. The plantation conforms to silvicultural best practices, acknowledged and respected as a model project throughout the world. A half century ago, the Shandong province faced a bleak future. In fact its very survival was unclear due to the natural calamity it was being subjected to. The UN Plantation Project changed all of that. That is the kind of change we can all embrace. A challenge well met. By associating with this Plantation today as our supply chain partner, TigerPLY is proud to take this environmental success story forward.

INDONESIA TigerPLY™ Premium Panels SFI’s work throughout the Indonesian archipelago has yielded some of our most important product developments over the previous year. We have partnered with several major manufacturing entities to bring the quality, reliability and product versatility of birch our customers have grown to expect with the TigerPly® logo. We are in the nascent stages of a major new manufacturing facility that should come on-line in 2022. Until that time, we plan for a robust, high-quality offering of products in 2021. Our birch line of products for 2021 will include our new and improved RX® panel, combining the lightweight characteristics of Falcata with the strength of Rubberwood. We will continue to offer a TigerLite® panel for a vast array of lightweight applications.

Shelter Forest has been extraordinarily cautious throughout the archipelago due to recent reports of illegal logging practice and poor environmental practices. What we have found with our species studies is a number of new species abundantly forested in plantations, preforming quite well with crop rotations of 7-15 years. These species of Falcata (Albizia), Gabon (Anthocephalus Cadamba) & Rubberwood(Hevea Brasiliensis) can transform Indonesia’s decades old practice of old growth Luan harvest to a much more suitable plantation management ber source. Although this new plantation grown resource does not lend it self the Indonesia’s traditional production of thin panels, It will be an ideal core material for 5.2-18mm panels.

LATVIA Birch Baltic Birch, often referred to as Russian Birch, has long been praised as some of the most outstanding plywood in the world. And for good reason. Composed entirely of Birch veneer, it combines many of the elements most desired in a plywood panel - an aesthetically pleasing texture and grain pattern, whole piece, nearly void-free core, phenomenal screw-holding potential and strength, and excellent routing capability. For many years SFI has utilized this unique resource for Birch face veneers used at many of the TigerPLY facilities around the world. As we move forward into 2021, Shelter Forest and a long-standing partner continue working toward construction of a new, world class plywood mill in Latvia dedicated to producing Birch plywood to SFI’s exacting speci cations. We invite our loyal customer base to stay tuned to near-term developments on this front.

NEW ZEALAND Radiata Pine The Monterey Pine (Pinus radiata) seed was rst introduced in New Zealand as a trial in the 1850’s being imported from California as a replacement for the slower growing native Kauri Pine. The Monterey Pine proved to be an excellent solution for widespread planting. Its ability to not only grow but thrive in a variety of hostile soil types made it ideal for New Zealand’s diverse climate. Under these conditions the Monterey Pine was shown to reach maturity in 28 years, 7 times faster than in its native state of California and 20 times faster than in Canada. By the rst New Zealand forestry boom of the 1920’s the Monterey Pine had been deemed the species of choice. By the 1930’s relief workers had planted this tree of choice on vast amounts of land, creating the largest plantation forest in the world reaching 188k hectares. Today, various plantation forests can be found in all regions of New Zealand. New Zealand is home to 1.8 million hectares of plantation grown trees (largest in the southern hemisphere), of which 89% are Monterey Pine commonly known as Radiata or “NZ Pine”. NZ Pine is widely sought after due to its high performance and the quality of ber it yields. This sustainably grown resource provides a balance of strength, weight, and fastening that can be manufactured with consistent quality. SFI has sourced New Zealand Pine since 2010. The stewardship of this resource is the gold standard in sustainable forest management, utilizing scienti cally scheduled pruning and extraordinarily gentle log handling throughout the harvest cycle.

GLUE TYPES ANSI ( American National Standards Institute ) categorized glues/ resins into two Type I - A waterproof resin engineered for exterior applications. GLOBAL LOGISTICS Well managed sharing of information allows for better and more timely decision making in production, distribution, marketing and sales. Competing in a global economy demands creative solutions using emerging technology. TradeSTAR Through extensive experience in supplying materials, Shelter Forest International has developed a proprietary program to track and manage inventory and order status. This program was developed for the bene t of our partners, to create visibility in the supply chain and maximize lean production scheduling. Orders placed, shipped, staged in warehousing, invoiced or delayed are all visible in realtime to our partners. The ow and sharing of information allows SFI to support multiple functions of production and time sensitive planning to develop seamless cooperation between suppliers and customers. Improved responsiveness to demand allows SFI to bring pro table, high quality, value added products to market quicker than its competition. Globalization has changed the way business is done and as a result companies need to become more ef cient in managing transportation. Shelter Forest International serves a vital role similar to a traditional 3PL(third party logistics) function. This partnership approach to supply management enables companies to collaborate and trust one another in the sharing of non-competitive information. This has also enabled the growth of the 3PL market because of the ability to effectively manage information in real time. Intermediaries like 3PL’s often have the technology to link requisite data to create a data warehouse and manage the continual ow of information and goods. We have integrated this function into TradeSTAR to provide an industry leading service to our partners. Virtual Warehousing The TradeSTAR system allows SFI programs to generate a “Virtual Warehouse� of rolling inventory. Material, tallies and manifests are visible while en-route. This allows production to be more effectively scheduled and actual inventory to be kept in real-time, with delivery dates and visibility of order status in detail down to the unit or SKU. Working with partners, we are able to schedule manufacturing for over 90 days forward while material is sourced domestically or multimodal from overseas. Distribution customers are able to pre-sell material before it is delivered.
