COMPASS ACADEMY ENCOURAGES THE CONTINUED DEVELOPMENT OF INDIVIDUAL STRENGTHS AND CHALLENGES BASED ON PERSONAL ASPIRATIONS AND INTERESTS. AT COMPASS ACADEMY STUDENTS: Have an individual Learner & Leader plan to meet their unique goals Gain the skills, learning strategies and techniques to manage their own learning profiles in a repeated cycle of learning (goal-action-feedback-reflection) Partner with teachers, tutors, role models and students to help them achieve their goals Have weekly meetings in small groups of 8 to 10 students and a teacher to identify the evidence of their strengths, monitor progress, celebrate their growth, and set new goals for future learning. ACADEMICS ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS The language arts curriculum is founded on the core belief that Learners & Leaders of the 21st century must be effective communicators. Our approach to reading is designed to equip students with the reading skills necessary to not just learn to read, but to read to learn. Also, attention is given to mastering the skills of efficient writers (typing, spelling, sentence construction, and grammar) and students are to be given ample opportunity to apply and develop the craft of writing across all core content areas.

SOCIAL STUDIES The social studies curriculum provides students with the framework needed to conquer the challenges of citizenship in a democracy and develop the critical thinking skills needed to be active and engaged participants in the global community.

MATHEMATICS Our mathematics curriculum is founded on the core belief that all students can succeed in mathematics. The mathematics program is based on a variety of mathematical tools and technologies (e.g., graphing technology, tablets, and manipulatives) to support our students’ abilities to tackle and solve interesting problems. Courses for Grades 6 and 7 provide powerful foundations in ratios, proportionality, and algebraic and geometric thinking in preparation for Grade 8 algebra.

SCIENCE The school’s middle school science curriculum integrates earth science, life science and physical sciences. The instructional practices supported by the school’s science curriculum encourage minds-on and hands-on opportunities that include opportunities to design, carry out, and interpret experiments.

SPANISH All students will be provided with Spanish world language class and will be able to participate in AP Spanish and AP English Language prior to high school graduation so that they can qualify for the Seal of Biliteracy.

EXTRA SUPPORTS AND PRACTICES HOLISTIC EARLY WARNING INDICATORS SYSTEM Compass Academy uses an Early Warning Indicator system designed by John Hopkins University to identify students who are off track in Attendance, Behavior and Course performance in English and Math – highly predictive indicators that a student will drop out of high school. Every week, the school’s professional staff reviews the students’ progress on Attendance, Behavior and Course performance to identify the best individualized academic and social-emotional supports and case management to help students get and stay on track to high school graduation and college, career, and life success.

A FOCUS ON SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL DEVELOPMENT Compass Academy is a school with a focus on the whole child, and through supporting students’ social and emotional well-being we ultimately position them for even greater academic and life outcomes. We do this by engaging students in activities that allow them to develop a sense of belonging, actively engage in school and community, and voice and choice in their experiences. Students are also given tools and experiences to reflect on their progress and growth, to persevere through their challenges, and to have a level of self-awareness and mindfulness to succeed throughout the complexity of everyday life. At Compass Academy students can build strong relationships with the people around them and can navigate the disagreements and difficulties all people experience by using intentional restorative practices.

TUTORING, MENTORING AND HOMEWORK SUPPORT A diverse team of City Year-AmeriCorps Members serve full-time in Compass Academy providing targeted supports to help improve student attendance, behavior, and course performance. These volunteers are college graduates trained to serve as near-peers who begin their service before the first bell rings and stay until the last child leaves the afterschool program. City Year-AmeriCorps Members are uniquely positioned to provide both targeted and school-wide interventions to serve the holistic needs of students.

WEEKLY L&L TEAM MEETINGS Led by teachers, staff members, and City Year AmeriCorps Members, students meet weekly in small-groups to reflect on their strengths, areas for growth, and progress towards achieving their Learner & Leader competencies.

SEMINARS Every student participates in two small-group seminars depending on the student’s Learner & Leader plan, their progress in content classes and competencies, or based on their passions.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE DEVELOPMENT FOR ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNERS Compass Academy will continually build on students’ language skills with the goal of developing bi-lingual/ bi-literate students. The end goal is to have non-native English speakers master English skills and also deepen skills in academic Spanish.

SPECIAL EDUCATION NEEDS Prior to registration teachers and staff meet with parents and guardians to discuss the availability of services and the needs of individual students. Incoming students with IEPs have a transition meeting to ensure that services are meeting the service time according to the IEP in regard to the structure of the Special Education department at Compass Academy. Accommodations and modifications are made so that students with IEPs can meet the graduation requirements adequately. All students with an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) enrolled at Compass Academy have their plan reviewed so specific services can be provided in the least restrictive environment.

COMMUNITY, HEALTH AND WELL-BEING COGNITIVELY RICH, PERFORMANCE-BASED ELECTIVES Deeper learning and 21st century competencies are advanced when students have an opportunity to apply their knowledge and skills in meaningful, performance-based situations. The school schedule has opportunities for students to participate in cognitively rich, performance-based electives.

EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES We encourage students to get involved with activities outside class and during the extended hours between 4:10 and 5:00 pm. These activities include homework help, physical education, and student clubs such as arts, musical instruments, choir, debate, drama, reading, cooking, and others depending on students’ and Corps Members’ interests. We take advantage of the school campus and the surrounding community, including recreational centers and parks, for exercise and well-being.

VILLAGE MEETINGS The school’s weekly community gatherings offer an important space for student voice and connection with their community. The topics of Village Meetings are driven by students and community needs and provide the space to appreciate the “Learner & Leader of the Week” while showcasing our diverse talents and cultures.

SERVICE LEARNING To nurture the development of rich community/civic-minded attitudes and behaviors, Learners & Leaders are engaged in various service-learning projects. By giving back to the community, students will provide tangible benefits to the school community as they gain a sense of belonging and develop a spirit of service.

TECHNOLOGY USE To prepare students to master digital literacy and succeed in a world that increasingly relies on technology, Compass Academy provides students with a variety of technology resources. This includes a personal computer to be used in the school. Every student at Compass receives his or her own Laptop to use through the day at school and help accelerate their learning! Students are permitted to use cell phones before or after school while outside of the building unless otherwise instructed. Students may ONLY use cell phones for approved instructional use during the school day or at lunch.

THE SCHOOL - FAMILY RELATIONSHIP All Compass Academy staff members know that the relationship with families is vitally important to the success of our students. We make sure all families can communicate with their student’s teachers at all times. We make every effort to return all phone calls and emails within 24 hours.

TO SUPPORT EACH STUDENT’S SUCCESS, EACH PARENT OR GUARDIAN:

Attends Back-to-School Night. The expectation is that all parents attend this event in order to get to know the teachers and their expectations. Takes attendance seriously. We need all students ready and present to learn each and every day. Stays connected, informed and up to date on current events through the Thursday Folder, phone calls, text messaging, class emails, Facebook and our website. Supports homework expectations. Parents or guardians should ask students about homework daily and ensure they are completing it each night. Attends formal family/teacher/student conferences in the fall and the spring. These are mandatory and are an important time to discuss each student’s goals and progress. Students will use data, grades and their Learner & Leader plan to report to teachers, staff, and families about their growth and areas of concern.

The Compass Academy Parent Student Portal The Compass Parent Student Portal is a way for parents and students to receive real-time updates on their success in school, either on their computer or mobile device. The portal contains four sections: 1. Behavior – A summary of the student’s Compass Points, which is our school wide behavior tracking system, 2. Most Recent Behaviors – A list of the student’s behaviors recorded, listed chronologically, 3. Academic – The student’s course grades by marking period, 4. Non-Deliverable Tasks - Assignments that students have not delivered.

UNIFORM

All students must wear the school uniform at all times. This includes during the extended school day and on field trips. Every student will wear a Compass Academy school uniform shirt. Students can wear a Compass Academy sweatshirt; jackets or other sweatshirts worn to school must be stored in lockers. Skirts must reach to mid-thigh and pants must not be worn low. Shoes must be suitable for the dayâ€™s activities. Students may not wear hats, hoods, bandanas, do-rags, or sunglasses. Clothing, jewelry, or appearances that are determined to distract students from learning will not be allowed.

We wear our uniform with pride! The uniform represents our commitent to eachother, our commitment to our school values, and our commitment to work together to become excellent Learners & Leaders. When students, staff and families wear the uniform, we will be seen as a team.

TEACHERS AND STAFF At Compass Academy, both students and adults take this learning journey together. We learn what makes each of us unique. We learn how to work as a team. Each school day is full of the joy, adventure, and friendship that come with learning together. With the added capacity of our City Year-AmeriCorps team, Compass Academy has one adult per every 8 students in the school allowing us to provide a more personalized learning experience to all students.

CITY YEAR AMERICORPS TEAM At Compass Academy, a team of 13 City Year-AmeriCorps Members serve every day and all school year as mentors and tutors providing both targeted and school-wide interventions to serve the holistic needs of our students.

Marcia Fulton, Executive Director

EDUCATION BACKGROUND

Marcia has worked in education for 24 years as teacher, instructional coach, director of curriculum and instruction, and as the Principal of a K-8 Charter school in Denver. She sees the power of a collaborative learning environment as being critical for both student and adult learning. In this environment, students are taught how to learn – not just what to learn. As a former Principal, and now as the Executive Director of Compass Academy, she would describe herself as one who leads with her heart and with her mind. Marcia believes that teaching and learning is a human endeavor. In her own words, “it is when we know and trust each other that relationships are formed and learning can happen. It is through intentional decisions about how we experience learning that we engage and become inspired to be all that we can be”.

Denise Thorne

EDUCATION BACKGROUND

Prior to becoming the Middle School Director Fellow at Compass Academy, Denise Thorne worked as a Spanish teacher in Denver, and as a Middle School Dean of students and School Director in Irving, Texas. Born and raised in Colorado, Denise could not be more excited to be returning home to work with students in Southwest Denver. She feels honored to be joining a team of educators who work tirelessly to support the students at Compass Academy each day.

Ryan Mick, Chief Academic Officer

EDUCATION BACKGROUND

Ryan grew up in rural Ohio and moved to Denver after living for several years in New Orleans. Ryan studied History and Economics in college, and then went on to pursue a Master’s in Educational Research and a Law degree from George Washington University in Washington, DC. Ryan has worked in the fields of child policy, civic education, and legal advocacy. He has had roles as special education teacher, program designer, and coach, most recently launching and leading the Diverse Learners Initiative at Teach For America.

COMPASS GOAL

Ryan joined the Compass team because he believes that all children should be known as people and learners and should have access to an education that values their voice and all they have to offer the world.

FUN FACTS

In his free time, Ryan enjoys hiking the Colorado mountains and traveling the world with friends and family.

Alicia Schaefer, 7th Grade English Language Arts Teacher

EDUCATION BACKGROUND

Alicia has taught in the Southwest Community of Denver for five years and is now going into her eighth year of teaching. Alicia went to the University of Oregon and majored in International Studies and Spanish. While there, she lived abroad in Chile. Following her time in Oregon, she moved to Phoenix, Arizona where she earned a Master’s in Education and taught for two years with Teach For America.

COMPASS GOAL

Her goal at Compass Academy is to empower our students to be avid, independent readers who are able to look at the world with a critical eye. In addition, she wants her students to speak confidently and advocate for themselves, their family, and their community.

FUN FACTS

She is a Colorado native and loves to read, ski, bike, and spend time in the mountains with her family. She also has the cutest dog in the world named Romo who likes to adventure alongside her!

Cathy O’Quinn, 7th Grade Math Teacher

EDUCATION BACKGROUND

Cathy received her Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from the University of Wyoming. Cathy has been a substitute teacher at Compass Academy over the past year. Now as the 7th grade Math Teacher, she feels as though she was meant to be a part of Compass Academy.

COMPASS GOAL

Her goal at Compass is to strengthen relationships with her students that allow them to take risks, take their learning seriously and to the next level. She wants to make their learning and experiences fun and something they look forward to daily.

FUN FACTS

Cathy grew up in Wyoming and loves the outdoors, especially playing golf in beautiful places.

Arlette Lucero, Art Elective Teacher

EDUCATION BACKGROUND

Arlette obtained her Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts at Colorado State University CSU in Fort Collins, Colorado. She also completed two years of Graphic Communication Technology at Community College of Denver and is a Certified Practitioner of Neo-Linguistic Programming and Time Line Therapy. She finds it exciting to work with seventh graders because they are just at the age when they can be locked into computers and doing art becomes less interesting. She wants to bring these students who have forgotten the joy of play back into the world of discovery and visual communication through Arts.

Her goal at Compass Academy is to see her students create a work of art that goes beyond their wildest dreams and to feel proud of their accomplishments.

FUN FACTS

Arlette is not only an art teacher, but also a real artist! She makes murals, illustrates books and her paintings are shown in a gallery.

Hannah Perrin, 6th Grade Language Arts Teacher

EDUCATION BACKGROUND

Hannah is a founding teacher at Compass Academy. Before joining Compass Academy Hannah spent two years in Memphis, Tennessee serving as a member of Teach for America and teaching English as a Second Language. Hannah is originally from Los Angeles, California where she earned a Bachelor’s in Psychology from Pepperdine University and served as a City Year-AmeriCorps Member as a tutor and mentor for sixth grade students.

Henrietta Sandoval, School Counselor

EDUCATION BACKGROUND

As her children grew up she decided to go back to school and earned a Bachelor’s degree in Human Services and a Master’s degree in School Counseling. Henrietta is excited to start a career at Compass Academy and focus on supporting students in many ways. She looks forward to offering a school counseling program that will provide students, parents, and teachers and staff a safe and accepting environment. Henrietta loves to give hugs and refers to all students as “hita’s, hito’s, mijos, and mijas”.

FUN FACTS

Henrietta is the mother of three daughters who are all married and have blessed her with five grandchildren. While raising her daughters she lived in Germany and traveled through Europe for six years.

Celine Wuarin, Special Education Teacher.

EDUCATION BACKGROUND

Before joining Compass Academy, Celine taught as a middle school special education teacher in the Montbello neighborhood. She earned her license in Special Education through Teach for America. Her inspiration to become a teacher was born after serving as a City Year-AmeriCorps Member in East New York, Brooklyn and as the Recruitment and Community Outreach Project Leader at City Year Denver. She is very excited to work with the staff and students of Compass Academy.

Her biggest goals at Compass Academy are to see both academic and social-emotional growth in her students.

FUN FACTS

Outside of the classroom, Celine practices and teaches yoga and still loves watching cartoons... Adventure Time is and will always be her favorite!

Jane Oatts, English Language Development Teacher

EDUCATION BACKGROUND

Jane graduated with honors from Tulane University in New Orleans, LA with a Bachelor’s Degree in Latin American Studies, music, and Spanish language. After working in hospitality for seven years, she returned to school for a masters in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages). She graduated summa cum laude from Hunter College, NYC, with a Master’s in Education with a focus on TESOL. Jane is certified K-12 in both New York and Colorado. Due to the broad age range of this certification, she has taught every grade, Pre K-12, since she began in the teaching profession in 2011. Jane came to Compass Academy because she likes the school goal to care for the community and the whole child’s well-being. In her own words “Compass understands the importance of how these combine with academics to form a strong Learner and a Leader”.

COMPASS GOAL

Jane’s goal at Compass Academy is to guide ELD students in increasing their academic English proficiency.

FUN FACTS

Jane grew up in Nyack, New York. Half of her high school years were spent in Montevideo, Uruguay. Jane enjoys a hearty laugh, cooking, practicing yoga, and learning about different cultures. 12

Jennifer Savino, Learning Sciences Facilitator

EDUCATION BACKGROUND

Jennifer has worked with Johns Hopkins University’s Talent Development Secondary Diplomas Now program facilitating school transformations in Miami, Florida. Her prior educational career experiences spanned 14 years and ranged from middle school and high school English instruction to mathematics curriculum writing and educational research. Dr. Savino has published mathematics curriculum and scholarly articles on literary theory and analysis and vocabulary instruction. She also has expertise in differentiating instruction, designing and delivering professional development, expanding best practices in gifted education to reach all learners, and technological integration.

Jolene Stark, Special Education Teacher

EDUCATION BACKGROUND

Before joining Compass Academy Jolene worked with the remarkable exceptional students at César Chávez Academy as the head of the Special Education Department where she received the DPS award for fun. Jolene attended Colorado Christian University where she completed a Bachelor’s degree in Organizational Management. Jolene then continued her education and completed a Master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction in Urban Pedagogy. She is ecstatic about the opportunity to work with the students at Compass Academy because she enjoys shaping all aspects of each unique child.

Her goals at Compass are to teach her students how to be global leaders and to find the path for success no matter the obstacles.

NAME AND SUBJECT:

Kareem Kalil, 6th Grade Math Teacher

EDUCATION BACKGROUND

Kareem Kalil is a founding teacher at Compass Academy. He is in his fifth year of teaching. Kareem worked for two years as a 6th Grade Math Teacher at Young Scholars Charter School in Philadelphia as part of Teach for America. Before that, Kareem was a City Year-AmeriCorps member in Boston, Massachusetts. He graduated as a student-athlete and basketball player from Colby College in 2013 with a Bachelor’s degree in Economics and Urban Education. After Colby he went to the University of Pennsylvania and graduated in 2015 with a Master’s in Urban Education.

COMPASS GOAL

His goal at Compass is having the freedom to develop a model that serves all children and to make all students love math.

FUN FACTS

Mr. K spent his summer in Mexico to improve his Spanish and now hopes to speak it more with his students and to continue to help them grow as Learners & Leaders!

Kathryn Reynolds, City Year, Community Coordinator

EDUCATION BACKGROUND

Kate served as a founding City Year-AmeriCorps Member at Compass Academy last year, providing targeted support for bilingual students in math, literacy, social studies, and science. In addition, she taught health class to the sixth grade girls and facilitated a girls’ empowerment club during enrichment days. Kate graduated from Washington University in St. Louis where she studied Global Health, Biology, and Anthropology.

COMPASS GOAL

Kate is excited to engage parents and families in the learning that takes place at Compass. She looks forward to creating pathways that bring authentic and meaningful service learning into the school and back out into the community.

FUN FACTS

She enjoys cooking, fiddling, visiting her brother in Boulder, playing recreational volleyball, and speaking in Spanish.

Kyle Forsyth, 6th Grade Science Teacher

EDUCATION BACKGROUND

Kyle is a founding teacher at Compass Academy. Before joining Compass Academy Kyle taught 5th grade Math and Science and finished the Associate Teacher Program at Brooke Charter Schools, one of the highest performing schools in Massachusetts. During that year he learned how effective teacher collaboration can truly transform the classroom. Kyle earned his Bachelor’s degree in Political Science from West Chester University of Pennsylvania. After college, Kyle served two years with City Year Boston; first as a City Year-AmeriCorps Member and then as a Team Leader. Through this volunteer work, he fell in love with urban education and became inspired to dedicate his time and energy to his students.

Kyle grew up just outside Philadelphia.

Myrna Albanez, 6th Grade Social Studies Teacher

EDUCATION BACKGROUND

Having been working in classroom settings since the age of 15, Mrs. Mryna enjoys the rewards and challenges of helping students to be “someone” rather than “somebody” in today’s society, by fostering students through a positive sense of self-worth while giving opportunities for students to explore their individual talents through various venues. Myrna earned her Bachelor’s and Master’s degree at the National University in La Jolla, California.

Her primary focus at Compass Academy will be to work with the school community to encourage students to be responsible and respectful individuals while being able to appreciate diversity! She believes that with the help of all — parents, students and teachers — we can make your Social Studies journey a wonderful experience.

Before joining Compass Academy Nate worked as the head of diverse learner and special education support for Teach For America Bay Area. He grew up in Massachusetts and attended Colorado College where he majored in Sociology and minored in Film Studies. Nate then continued his journey west and moved to the Bay Area in California to work in schools as a City Year-AmeriCorps Member, a High School Special Education Teacher, and a Teacher Coach. Nate is thrilled to be at Compass Academy because of the school’s focus on making sure every single student feels supported, proud of what makes them unique and able to hit their own learning goals.

FUN FACTS

Nate and his wife, Danika (also a middle school teacher), went backpacking and camping every month of last year and are excited to spend time outdoors in Colorado.

He attended the University of Colorado Denver where he majored in International Relations. Before joining Compass Academy Pablo worked at Colorado UpLift and gained a diverse experience working in the Southwest community of Denver. Pablo joined Compass Academy with the thrill of becoming part of an innovative school.

EDUCATION BACKGROUND

Ruby earned her Bachelor of Arts in English Literature and Spanish and a Master’s in Education from the University of Denver. Before joining Compass Academy Ruby taught at Skinner Middle School and is now thrilled to come back to teach at the same community where she grew up! She graduated from Lincoln High School in 2009 as a Gates Millennium Scholar and a full tuition scholarship for college. She is inspired by Compass Academy’s approach to learning and commitment to the South West Denver area.

Her biggest goal is to live out the Compass Academy philosophy in and out of the classroom, including promoting deeper learning and socialemotional growth for all students. She is here to let her students know that EVERYTHING they set their hearts in is possible!

ALIADOS Compass Academy es el producto de un proceso de diseño intenso liderado en alianza entre la junta directiva local, City Year Inc., y El Centro para la Organización Social de Escuelas (CSOS) de Johns Hopkins University. City Year and CSOS son dos organizaciones con 50 años de experiencia combinada y actualmente trabajan en alianza para ayudar a estudiantes en más de 300 escuelas en el país. Después de trabajar en el sector hospitalario por siete años regresó a la universidad y obtuvo su maestría en TESOL (Enseñanza del Inglés como Idioma Extranjero). A Jane le gusta reír, cocinar, practicar yoga y aprender acerca de diferentes culturas. Henrietta es madre de tres hijas quienes ahora tienen su hogar y le han dado a Henrrieta la bendición de ser abuela. Cuando sus hijas eran niñas Henrrietta y su familia vivió en Alemania y otros países de Europa por seis años. Cuando sus hijas crecieron Henrrieta decidió regresar a la universidad y obtuvo su grado en Administración de Recursos Humanos y una Maestría en Consejería para Escuelas. Ella está muy feliz de unirse a Compass Academy y enfocarse en apoyar a sus estudiantes en muchas formas. Su objetivo es ofrecer un programa de consejería para promover un ambiente sano y seguro para los estudiantes, maestros, y familias. Alicia ha enseñado en el Suroeste de Denver por cinco años y en total tiene 8 años de experiencia como maestra. Después de Oregon Alicia se mudó a Phoenix, Arizona, donde estudió una Maestría en Educación y enseñó por dos años con Teach for America.

Marcia ha trabajado en educación por 25 años. Como maestra, coach, directora de currículo y como rectora. NAME AND SUBJECT:

UNIFORME

Todos los estudiantes deben vestir el uniforme a todas horas incluyendo actividades en el horario extracurricular y salidas de campo. Cada estudiante de Compass Academy debe vestir la camiseta del uniforme. Los estudiantes solamente pueden usar el suéter de Compass Academy. Todas las chaquetas o suéteres que no sean uniforme deben ser guardados en los lockers. Las faldas deben ir mínimo a la mitad de la pierna y los pantalones no pueden vestirse debajo de la cintura. Los zapatos deben ser apropiados para las actividades del día. Los estudiantes no pueden llevar gorras, cachuchas, pañoletas, “do-rags” o gafas de sol. Atuendos, joyas, o apariencias que distraigan la atención de los estudiantes y no les permita concentrarse en el aprendizaje no serán permitidas. ¡EL UNIFORME ES MUY IMPORTANTE! Los maestros y administradores de Compass Academy saben que las relaciones con la familia son vitales para el éxito de los estudiantes. Queremos asegurarnos que todas las familias puedan comunicarse con los maestros a todas horas. Haremos el mejor esfuerzo para regresar llamadas y correos dentro de 24 horas.

PARA APOYAR EL ÉXITO DE SU ESTUDIANTE LAS FAMILIAS DEBEN:

Asistir a las Back-to-School Nights. Es requerimiento que todos los padres o guardianes de los estudiantes asistan a este evento para conocer a los maestros y sus expectativas. Tomar la asistencia de los estudiantes con mucha seriedad. Mantenerse en conexión e informados acerca de la escuela a través de las carpetas que se envían a casa los días jueves. También a través de llamadas telefónicas, mensajes de texto, correos electrónicos, Facebook y nuestra página web. Preguntar a los estudiantes acerca de las tareas diarias y asegurarse que se completen a diario. Asistir a las juntas de padres formales en el otoño y la primavera. Estas son mandatorias y son un espacio importante para conversar con los maestros acerca de los objetivos individuales de los estudiantes y su progreso. Los estudiantes usan datos, información de sus notas y su Estudiantes & Líderes plan para reportar a los maestros, administradores y familias de su crecimiento y las áreas a mejorar.

Portal de Familias de Compass Academy El portal de familias es un mecanismo para que los padres y madres de familia y guardianes de familia de los estudiantes estén enterados acerca del éxito de sus estudiantes en la escuela. Esto se puede hacer en su computadora, Tablet o teléfono celular. El portal tiene cuatro secciones: 1. Comportamiento – Un resumen de todos los puntos Compass acumulados lo cual es el sistema de comportamiento de la escuela.

2. Comportamientos Recientes – Una lista de los comportamientos registrados en orden cronológico. 3. Académico – Los grados de los estudiantes por cada periodo académico. 4. Tareas sin Entregar – Tareas y labores que los estudiantes no han entregado.

ejemplo, si un estudiante necesita profundizar en matemáticas y le gusta mucho la ciencia puede participar en un seminario de matemáticas y uno de ciencias y cambiarlos aproximadamente cada mes de acuerdo a sus necesidades específicas.

INGLÉS COMO SEGUNDA LENGUA (ELD) Compass Academy desarrollará las habilidades lingüísticas de los estudiantes con el fin de ayudarles a desarrollar habilidades bilingües. El objetivo será que los estudiantes cuya primera lengua no es inglés obtengan fluidez en inglés pero también profundicen su conocimiento académico del idioma español.

EDUCACIÓN ESPECIAL Antes de iniciar el año escolar maestros y administrativos se reúnen con las familias para discutir los diferentes recursos disponibles para servir las necesidades únicas de cada estudiante. Los estudiantes nuevos con un IEPs tendrán una reunión de transición para asegurar que su IEP y están alineados con la estructura del Departamento de Educación Especial en Compass Academy. La escuela puede ofrecer modificaciones o adaptaciones para que cada estudiante alcance sus requerimientos de graduación adecuadamente y con las menores restricciones posibles.

COMUNIDAD Y BIENESTAR ELECTIVAS Cuando los estudiantes tienen la oportunidad de aplicar sus conocimientos y habilidades de forma consiente a diferentes situaciones, pueden desarrollar aprendizajes y competencias para el siglo XXI más profundos. El horario escolar comprende oportunidades para que los estudiantes participen de electivas llenas de contenido y acción.

ACTIVIDADES EXTRACURRICULARES En Compass Academy recomendamos que los estudiantes se comprometan con actividades extracurriculares durante el horario extendido de 4:10 a 5:00 pm. Estas actividades incluyen ayuda con la tarea, educación física, y clubes estudiantiles tales como arte, instrumentos musicales, coro, debate, drama, lectura, cocina, y otros dependiendo de los intereses de los estudiantes y los mentores de City Year-AmeriCorps. La escuela utiliza el campus y sus alrededores, como parques y centros recreacionales, para el ejercicio físico y bienestar de los estudiantes.

REUNIONES COMUNITARIAS – “VILLAGE MEETING” Las reuniones semanales de la comunidad escolar ofrecen un espacio importante para que los estudiantes expresen sus ideas y para fortalecer las conexiones y relaciones con su comunidad. Los temas de cada “Village Meeting” son basados en las necesidades de la comunidad escolar y proveen un espacio para apreciar a “Estudiantes & Líderes de la Semana” y exhibir nuestros diversos talentos y culturas.

SERVICIO COMUNITARIO DE APRENDIZAJE Para nutrir el desarrollo de actitudes y comportamientos cívicos y comunitarios, los Estudiantes & Líderes se integran a varios proyectos de servicio comunitario. Con esto los estudiantes contribuyen beneficios a la comunidad escolar, obtienen sentido de pertenencia, y desarrollan un espíritu de servicio.

USO DE TECNOLOGÍA Compass Academy ofrecerá los recursos tecnológicos para preparar a los estudiantes para que dominen las habilidades digitales y tengan éxito en un mundo que cada vez depende más del uso de la tecnología. Esto incluye un computador personal para cada estudiante dentro de la escuela. Los estudiantes solamente pueden usar sus teléfonos celulares antes o después de la escuela fuera del edificio, a no ser que se les diga lo contrario. Los estudiantes pueden usar los teléfonos celulares para actividades académicas o durante el almuerzo solamente cuando sea permitido específicamente.

CURRÍCULO ACADÉMICO INGLÉS (LECTURA Y ESCRITURA) El currículo de Inglés está basado en la creencia que todos los Estudiantes & Líderes del siglo XXI deben ser alfabetas y comunicadores efectivos. Nuestro método de lectura está diseñado para ofrecer a los estudiantes las habilidades lectoras necesarias no solamente para leer sino para leer para aprender. Además, prestaremos atención al desarrollo de destrezas de escritores eficientes (tipografía, ortografía, construcción de oraciones, y gramática). Los estudiantes tendrán amplias oportunidades de desarrollar el arte de escribir en todas las áreas académicas.

CIENCIAS SOCIALES El currículo de ciencias sociales ofrece a los estudiantes un camino para desenvolverse en los retos de la democracia y la ciudadanía participativa. Los estudiantes podrán desarrollar habilidades de pensamiento crítico necesarias para ser participantes activos y comprometidos en una comunidad global.

MATEMÁTICAS Nuestro currículo de matemáticas está basado en la creencia que todos los estudiantes pueden tener éxito en matemáticas. El programa está basado en una variedad de herramientas y tecnologías (por ejemplo, tecnología de gráficas, tabletas y manipulativos) para apoyar a nuestros estudiantes en desarrollar su habilidad de acercarse a problemas y resolverlos de una manera más interesante. Los cursos para estudiantes de sexto y séptimo ofrecen bases en radios, proporciones, y pensamiento algebraico y geométrico que les prepara para aprender algebra en octavo grado.

CIENCIAS NATURALES El currículo de ciencia integra ciencias físicas, de la tierra y de la vida. Las prácticas de enseñanza incluyen oportunidades para aplicar prácticas y conocimientos en el diseño, ejecución e interpretación de experimentos en el laboratorio.

ESPAÑOL Todos los estudiantes reciben clase de español y podrán participar en el examen AP Spanish y AP Inglés antes de graduarse de High School para que adquieran certificación bilingüe.

APOYOS Y PRACTICAS EXTRA SYSTEMA HOLÍSTICO DE INDICADORES DE RIESGO Compass Academy usa un sistema de indicadores de riesgo diseñado por la Universidad de John Hopkins para identificar a los estudiantes quienes no asisten con frecuencia al colegio, presentan dificultades de comportamiento o poco rendimiento académico en Inglés o Matemáticas. Estos son indicadores que presentan los estudiantes que tienden a desertar de la escuela. Cada semana los profesionales de la escuela revisan el progreso de los estudiantes en estos indicadores para identificar los mejores recursos para ayudar a los estudiantes a estar en buen camino hacia la graduación de High School y el éxito profesional y en sus vidas.

ENFOQUE EN EL DESARROLLO SOCIAL Y EMOCIONAL DEL ESTUDIANTE Compass Academy se enfoca en el estudiante de manera holística, apoyando a los estudiantes en su bienestar social y emocional les ayudamos a preparase para alcanzar mayores resultados académicos y en su proyecto de vida. Esto lo hacemos comprometiendo a los estudiantes en actividades que les permiten desarrollar un sentido de pertenencia, dedicarse a la escuela y la comunidad y tener una voz para expresar sus preferencias y experiencias.

TUTORÍAS, MENTORIAS Y AYUDA CON LA TAREA Un equipo diverso de del programa de City Year-AmeriCorps presta servicio de tiempo completo en Compass Academy, ofreciendo apoyo para ayudar a mejorar la asistencia, el comportamiento y el desempeño académico de los estudiantes. Estos voluntarios son jóvenes graduados de la Universidad y están entrenados para servir como pares comenzando su servicio temprano en la mañana antes que empiezan las clases y terminando en la noche después que el último estudiante sale de la escuela. Los Tutores y Mentores de City Year-AmeriCorps están posicionados para ofrecer intervenciones a toda la escuela o a cada estudiante individualmente.

SEMINARIOS Semanalmente cada estudiante participa en dos tipos diferentes de seminarios dependiendo de su plan de Estudiante & Líder, su progreso en las clases académicas, avance en competencias, o pasiones específicas. Por 6
