Peter & Caroline
Peter and Caroline spent intentional time getting to know one another before their first date; their friendship soon blossomed into something more.
Photo by Joel & Alea Hunt Design by Morgan Lockhart
HHave you ever noticed how slippery a slope falling in love can be, especially when you least expect it? Many of the brides featured in this issue would agree. Few could point to a single moment when they knew they’d found “the one.”
Reflecting on my own love story, I don’t know that I could either, but my husband, Justin, absolutely can.
It was March 11, 2020. We had only been dating for a few weeks at the time but had been close friends for nearly a year. While we were vacationing with friends, we watched the news and heard the name, COVID-19, for the first time.
Foolishly, we celebrated “another two weeks of spring break” with a round of shots. In the weeks that followed, while the world seemed to be going up in flames, Justin remained calm, steady, pragmatic even.
I never understood why.
Our premarital counselor later described Justin as a golden retriever—radiantly positive with a no-quit, solution-oriented mindset. The guy never has a bad day. It’s both admirable and annoying as a black cat like myself.
Fast forward three years, and I watched through streams of tears as Justin recited his wedding vows to me: “Anna, I thought back to our Gulf Shores beach trip in 2020. A thick fog rolled over the beach, and the president came over the TV, announcing border closures because of a new virus called COVID-19. I knew then that even though the future was uncertain, I would be fine because I had you to stand next to. So, I can say for certain that that was the first time I knew I loved you.”
For someone who then still couldn’t even pinpoint her “I knew, too,” moment, that was the most poignant knife to the heart.
Now only a handful of years into our marriage, here’s what I’ve learned: Love is rarely linear. It doesn’t matter when you learned you were in love; although, those moments do make sweet stories. What really matters is how your love for each other endures even the most uncertain of times.
I’m proud to say that Justin has remained my pillar of strength from that day forward, always eager to help me see the bright side of things. If The Killers’ hit single wasn’t about infidelity, I’d totally say his nickname should be “Mr. Brightside.”
So, from us to you, I wish you nothing but a love that lasts, readers. I hope you love big and loud and recklessly, but most of all, I hope you never lose sight of how beautiful venturing into the unknown can be with the one of your dreams.
Love on, readers,

Will Mason discusses his new single and the founding of Mason Music—a hub to bring people together.
BY HANNA ALLEN

WWill Mason never intended to start a music business.
However, Mason Music, a music lesson and event company, was inspired when Will began teaching kids from his church.
“I fell in love with teaching,” Will says. “I really enjoyed getting to know my students and watching them grow in their musical abilities. That first student and those lightbulb moments inspired everything.”
For several years, Mason Music consisted of Will driving around to people’s houses, teaching lessons wherever families could fit him in. That changed in 2012, when he opened the company’s first studio in Cahaba Heights.
“Getting into a physical space was a dream because we wanted community,” Will says. “We wanted kids to meet each other, work together and play together. We wanted a staff that was building something bigger than just me.”
Opening that first studio unlocked the ability for
Mason Music to expand its programs and deepen its mission. They added summer camps, Rock Band League, workshops and more opportunities for collaboration. What started as one musician teaching a handful of kids became a growing community.
“We saw that there was a need in the community for a well-organized music education company,” Will says. “There have always been people who teach out of their homes or drive around, but what Mason Music offers—structure, customer service, consistency—was something families really responded to.”
As the business grew, Will continued to carry with him a lifelong love of music. He has been playing since he was 6 years old and spent years touring as a member of the Mountain Brook-based band, Moses Mayfield, alongside Matthew Mayfield.
“I still write,” he explains. “I have a phone full of voice memos and a Google Drive full of half-finished songs.”

There have always been people who teach out of their homes or drive around, but what Mason Music offers—structure, customer service, consistency—was something families really responded to.
-Will Mason

In fact, Will recently released his first published single, “Darlin’,” dedicated to his daughter, Alice. He produced the track in his home studio and played every instrument except drums. Wil Drake recorded the drum parts, while Will handled acoustic guitar, electric guitar, slide guitar, bass, keys, vocals and background vocals. “Darlin’” is a song written by a father to his daughter at a turning point in her life. Alice is now 15, preparing to get her driver’s license

and enter a new stage of independence. The song reflects on the early years Will spent with her: bedtime talks, dress-up games, carrying her on his shoulders and all the small moments that shape a parent’s memories.
“I got really encouraging feedback,” Will says. “Because it’s a sweet song for my daughter, people connected with the story. My daughter loved it and shared it with her friends, which meant the most.”

Living with a chronic health condition doesn’t mean childhood has to stop. At Children’s of Alabama, we make sure kids can keep doing what they do best—laughing, playing, and simply being kids. With expert care, advanced treatments, and a team that never stops believing in brighter days, we help families navigate their healthcare journey with confidence, strength, and hope.
The artwork for the single is a sketch Will made on the back of a to-do list when Alice was 3 years old. He kept it tucked away for more than a decade—a small reminder of a moment he didn’t want to forget.
“I don’t throw anything away,” he says. “I still have both kids’ hospital bracelets from when they were born.”
Will and his wife, Mallory—owner of Daughters Baking—have two children, Alice and Liam. Their family has been intertwined with the growth of Mason Music from the beginning. Many of the company’s early decisions were shaped by the couple’s desire to build something meaningful,

sustainable and rooted in community.
As Mason Music expanded, the challenges of running a growing business became clearer. Will often shares that he never planned to be an entrepreneur; however, Mason Music continued to grow into one of the most well-known music education companies in Birmingham.
Today, it includes multiple lesson studios, a recording studio and a wide range of programs for

all ages. Will says the company’s growth has always been connected to the same principles that guided those first home lessons: meeting families where they are, creating welcoming environments and making music accessible.
“We’ve always wanted Mason Music to be more than just lessons,” he says. “We want people to feel supported. We want them to feel like they’re part of something.”

That sense of belonging has become one of the company’s most defining features. Many students stay for years, beginning in private lessons and eventually joining camps, bands or advanced programs. Some former students even return as instructors—a fullcircle moment that reinforces what Will has built.
As for what’s next, Will says he hopes to continue expanding opportunities for students, investing in staff and strengthening the company’s creative programs.
“There are always new ideas,” he says. “We want to keep creating things that help people make music with confidence and joy.”
While Mason Music continues to grow, Will’s individual musical pursuits are entering a new chapter, too. The release of “Darlin’” has encouraged him to return to songwriting with a renewed sense of purpose.
“I didn’t expect to release anything, but this song reminded me why I started writing in the first place,” he explains.
For him, running a company and releasing music aren’t separate paths—they both come from the same place: a love for music and the people who make it.

Iz Weddings & Events founder Kay Reed caters vision into fruition for each of her clients.
BY ASHLEY TIEDT
LISA CHEEK PHOTOGRAPHY, NIK LAYMAN & CONTRIBUTED

IIn the world of weddings, trends come and go, but details matter and working with someone who genuinely loves what they do can be comforting. For Kay Reed, founder of Iz Weddings & Events, that love is the guiding force behind her catering and events company.
What began more than two decades ago as a small, white-tablecloth restaurant has evolved into one of Birmingham’s most trusted names in wedding catering. Yet even as Iz Weddings & Events has expanded its reach, its heart has remained the same: thoughtful food, warm hospitality and a team that treats every celebration like the unique event it is.
“We actually started with a little restaurant where the café is now,” Kay recalls. “We did lunch, and then in the evening we put on white tablecloths and served dinner. We changed the menu just about every day, or at least several times a week.”

That restaurant, located in Vestavia Hills, quickly became a favorite. One evening, a guest made a request that would change everything: She asked Kay to cater an event for her business.
“I said, ‘Sure, we can cater it,’” Kay says. “It ended up being about 600 people, and after we all picked ourselves up off the floor, we did the event and continued to do it for many years. Our catering grew bigger than the restaurant.”
Eventually, the decision became clear: Iz would focus on private events and catering, while still maintaining a strong café presence.
Today, “Everything Iz” is the umbrella brand encompassing several beloved offerings: Iz Café, Iz Weddings & Events, Iz the Place (an event space) and Iz Good Stuff—a wholesale granola product.
“It sounds huge, but we’re really not,” Kay explains. What the company lacks in corporate sprawl, it more than makes up for in heart.

For brides navigating the wedding-planning process, especially those without a planner, Iz Weddings & Events offers both structure and reassurance. Kay believes the process should feel personal.
“We either have an initial phone call to gather information, or you can go on our website and fill out a catering form,” she says.
That first step is to gather the essentials: guest count, venue, budget range and overall vision. From

there, Kay and her team prepare a customized proposal.
“Based on the information you give, we put a proposal together and send it to you, and then we can have an in-person meeting,” she explains. “If you decide to book us, then we want to have an inperson meeting. I like meeting every bride.”
Kay works closely with Melissa Waugh, Iz Weddings & Events’ sales manager, in a seamless partnership.
“She talks logistics, and I talk food,” Kay says. “We make a good team.”

When it comes to menu planning, Kay is honest about one thing: budget matters.
“Of course, everyone would like to have beef tenderloin at their wedding, but it just depends on the budget,” she says.
Iz Weddings & Events offers everything from elevated hors d’oeuvres to full-plated meals, and Kay takes pride in meeting couples exactly where they are. In Alabama, where receptions often favor mingling over seated dinners, she helps couples determine what best fits their style.
Rather than dictating menus, Kay starts with conversation: “What are some of your favorite foods? What’s your favorite restaurant in town?” she asks couples. “You’ve been to weddings. What is something you would never want at your wedding? What is something you would absolutely love?”
That philosophy extends to grooms, too.

“If the groom feels strongly about something, I say give it to him,” Kay says, chuckling. “Because it’s probably the only thing he is going to get out of the wedding that he wants.”
Iz Weddings & Events embraces personality and sentiment.
“We always ask the groom, ‘What is your favorite dessert?’” Kay says. While Iz does not create full wedding cakes, the team offers tasting cakes and dessert displays that feel intentional and indulgent.
“A tasting cake is just a regular, six-inch cake that we pipe like a wedding cake,” she explains. “Then, we’ll have a table full of almond cake bites or chocolate bites, whatever they love.”

With decades of experience under her belt, Kay still lights up when talking about doing something new.
“We cook every style of food you can think of,” she says.
Italian, Asian, Southern, global fusion—it’s all fair game.
“For me, I like doing something a little different that you don’t see at every wedding reception,” she adds. “We do a little station with baby steamer baskets and pot stickers, or we do seared tuna in a little, food-grade aluminum can. It’s just precious.”
These creative touches are what guests remember long after the last dance.
“I have a lady I see every year at another event,” Kay says. “It’s been five years since the wedding she attended, and she still comes up to me and says how wonderful it was. Those are the things that are so rewarding.”

“Working with Iz was by far the easiest part of our wedding-planning process. I attribute this ease to the fact that Mrs. Kay and her team seem to have a theme to their service: It’s personal. Following our first meeting, Iz created a menu which reflected both my husband and I. This menu was unique to use and helped tell our story. If there is one thing Mrs. Kay takes personal, it is the food and the service. Her team’s passion for incredible food delivered by friendly folks was seamlessly executed, and our wedding day is one we will never forget.”
-Sarah & Dylan Spencer

“Iz Catering did an outstanding job at my wedding and engagement party. I love how caring and intentional Mrs. Kay and her staff are during the planning process. She spent extra time helping me create the perfect menu of my favorite foods and was flexible with all price points. Because Iz is such an experienced caterer in the Birmingham area, they were also able to help me with other wedding details. Working with Iz saved us from so much stress! My wedding was perfect, and I attribute that largely to the way Kay and her staff handled the event.”
-Jane Anne & Kyle Sanford

If there is one thing Kay wants people to know about Iz Weddings & Events, it’s that her team is everything.
“I’m only as good as the people around me,” she says. “They are amazing.”
Many staff members have been with her for more than a decade and some for nearly 20 years. That longevity is evident in the service they bring to every event.
“Staff makes or breaks an event,” she says, simply. “If they’re not happy to be there, they don’t need to be.” Fortunately, happiness seems to be part of the culture.
“I have one lady who says, ‘Thank you for letting me join y’all today,’” Kay shares. “They’re just happy when they come to work, and it makes all the difference in the world.”
After all these years, Kay still feels the same sense of purpose she did at the beginning.
“I’m still having fun,” she says. “I love seeing a bride happy.”
Her advice to couples is simple and heartfelt: “Hire people you’re very comfortable with, let everybody do their job and then relax because you blink and it’s over.”

The Southern Planner, one of the Southeast’s premier wedding planning and design cohorts, offers their tips and tricks for throwing the perfect “garden party-themed” event.
BY SHELBY KNIGHT
PHOTOS BY EMILY GREEN CREATIVE
A garden-party celebration offers a quiet kind of luxury—an atmosphere that feels romantic, effortless and timeless. Rooted in the charm of elegant outdoor gatherings from generations past, today’s garden-party aesthetic blends soft refinement with modern whimsy. More and more brides are gravitating toward this style for the way it elevates a wedding day without feeling overly formal: gentle color palettes, heirloom-inspired details and naturally beautiful venues create an experience that is both elevated and inviting. As this look continues to rise in popularity, the question becomes how to execute it well. Here are the key elements we recommend when creating a true garden-party moment.

Florals are the heartbeat of the style. Choose blooms that feel freshly gathered—roses, hydrangeas, sweet peas and other soft, airy textures. Pastels or muted tones maintain that romantic, garden-grown feel and bring a sense of natural abundance to the day.

Attire should echo the garden’s beauty. Gowns with floral appliqué, embroidered textures, soft movement or whimsical accessories like gloves or capes complement the setting and enhance the romance.

Tablescapes allow the theme to fully bloom. Traditional china, layered linens, delicate glassware, petite floral clusters, patterned napkins and handwritten place cards add depth and charm. These details anchor the look and invite guests to linger.

At The Southern Planner, we’re seeing more and more brides gravitate toward the gardenparty aesthetic. It’s a style that feels elevated yet approachable. Matching invitations and paper goods to the theme helps set the tone from the very beginning, while tea foods, light bites and signature beverages continue the experience throughout the day. Thoughtful touches like coordinated décor, layered tablescapes and romantic attire ensure every element works together. When done intentionally, this style creates a day that feels cohesive, elegant and unforgettable—exactly the kind of celebration our clients dream of.

Whether as a thoughtful groomsman’s gift or as a treat for guests at a wedding reception, cigars elevate any occasion, bonding people together, slowing down time and transforming single moments into lasting memories. Terry Wester, co-owner of Trussville Cigar Co., believes these shared mementos represent a bride and groom’s gratitude for those closest in their lives. Here, he discusses four different types of popular cigars and what to pair with them for any celebratory event.
BY ANNA GRACE BREEDLOVE
KELSEA SCHAFER

Grown in abundance of natural light, Sun Grown cigars’ flavor profiles are richer and zestier than their shadegrown competitors. Smoking a C.L.E. 40th Anniversary Robusto, for example, one will taste a combination of nuts, cedar and touches of honey and graham crackers.
PAIRS WELL WITH:
Rum, bourbon and cognac
Slow-roasted meats
TERRY’S RECOMMENDATIONS:
Perdomo 10th Anniversary
Arturo Fuente Chateau Fuente
2. Connecticut
Famed for their golden wrappers, Connecticut cigars deliver mellow, creamy notes and are ideal for those new to cigar smoking. A classic, the Perdomo 10th Anniversary Champagne, is a nice, low-key smoke, making it a neat choice for group settings with diverse crowds.
PAIRS WELL WITH:
White wine, cappuccinos and lattes
Charcuterie and crème brûlée
TERRY’S RECOMMENDATIONS:
C.L.E. Connecticut 6x60 Perdomo 10th Anniversary Champagne
3. Maduro
A direct contrast to the Connecticut, the Maduro cigar is defined by its toasted, aged leaves and longer, fuller body. First-time triers are often surprised by these cigars’ tastes of dark chocolate, cocoa, molasses and baking spices—smoother, richer flavors that aren’t as harsh as one might expect given its presentation.
PAIRS WELL WITH:
Merlot, espressos and Single-Malt Scotch Smoked meats, aged cheddar and toffee
TERRY’S RECOMMENDATIONS:
Oliva V Double Robusto
Kristoff Veinte Perfecto
One of Terry’s favorite brands, the Arturo Fuente Rare Pink’s line fundraises for breast cancer research. This elegant smoke features an Ecuadorian wrapper and a Dominican-grown filler for a well-rounded profile, giving off hints of fruit and floral undertones.
PAIRS WELL WITH:
Bourbon and aged rum
Dark chocolate and nuts
TERRY’S RECOMMENDATIONS:
Queen of Hearts

The dropped waistline transitions into a voluminous skirt that flows in rich, liquid folds— capturing the light with every movement and creating an effortless sense of luxury.
Timeless, elegant and majestically refined, ball gowns are perfect for brides who seek elevated grandeur and unforgettable presence.

DRESS NAME: Orchid Petal
STYLE: Column · Deep V-Neckline · Embroidered Bodice
Orchid Petal is a refined fusion of softness and structure, created for the bride who embraces modern elegance shaped through couture craftsmanship. The gown features a beautifully embroidered bodice with a deep V-neckline, delicately framed by floral lace that adds dimension, femininity and a quiet radiance to the upper silhouette. Subtle beaded accents trace the waistline, offering a gentle shimmer that defines and elongates the figure with polished precision.
The skirt, tailored from luminous Mikado, extends into a sleek column silhouette that moves with effortless grace. Its clean, uninterrupted lines showcase minimalism at its finest, allowing the artistry of the bodice to take center stage. A detachable train elevates the look with dramatic fluidity, giving the bride the versatility to shift from ceremony grandeur to reception sophistication.
Orchid Petal is designed for the modern bride who cherishes the poetry of floral detail and the purity of a timeless silhouette.

DRESS NAME: Orchid Sculpture STYLE: A-Line with Slit · Regular Waistline · Straight Neckline
Orchid Sculpture is a celebration of modern minimalism elevated by sculptural, couture artistry. Crafted from luminous silk Mikado, this gown is designed for the bride who commands attention with quiet confidence and effortless grace.
The strapless bodice showcases a clean, architectural straight neckline—sleek, structured and impeccably contoured to the form. At the waist, an oversized couture bow becomes the gown’s defining statement piece. Expertly folded and voluminous, it blooms like a satin sculpture, adding dramatic dimension while preserving the gown’s pure, refined silhouette.
The A-line skirt, tailored from luxurious silk Mikado, flows with soft, understated movement. A modern slit introduces subtle allure, while the fabric’s gentle sheen catches the light beautifully, creating the impression of floating softness and contemporary radiance.
A-line silhouettes are timeless—perfect for the classic bride.

DRESS NAME: Orchid Blossom
STYLE: Mermaid · Straight Neckline · Lace Bolero
Orchid Blossom is a breathtaking, twopiece bridal ensemble that blends modern sophistication with delicate couture artistry. The look begins with an exquisitely crafted lace bolero, designed off-the-shoulder for a soft, romantic frame around the neckline and décolletage. Each appliqué is handplaced, creating a dimensional garden of 3D rosettes that bloom across the bodice. The intricate texture brings depth, movement and a sculptural floral elegance reminiscent of atelier couture.
Beneath the lace layer, a sleek, straightneckline corset offers clean architectural structure and a refined contemporary silhouette. The balance between the soft, blooming lace and the minimalist corsetry creates a striking interplay of romance and modernity.
The ensemble transitions into a sculpted crepe mermaid skirt that hugs the figure with precision, elongating the bride’s silhouette and enhancing her natural curves. Its smooth, uninterrupted lines offer a luxurious contrast to the intricate texture above, while the gentle flare at the hem adds movement and understated drama.
Mermaid silhouettes create a modern, romantic statement and are designed for the bride who cherishes fine craftsmanship, loves artistic detail and seeks a gown that embodies both softness and strength.

We met on the dating app, Hinge.
HOW DID YOU KNOW YOUR SPOUSE WAS THE ONE?
I knew because of how he treats me and others. He has the kindest heart I know! He would do anything for anyone.
HOW DID HE PROPOSE?
I thought I was having a girls’ dinner at Red or White Wine & Gourmet Center, but I was completely surprised when we went across the street to Shoppe Birmingham “to wait for our table.” Austin was there waiting for me, so he could propose.

HOW DID YOU TWO MEET?
Andrew and I met back at Vestavia Hills High school and hit it off right away. We became close friends almost instantly.
HOW DID YOU KNOW YOUR SPOUSE WAS THE ONE?
Even though we ended up going to rival colleges—the University of Alabama and Auburn University— Andrew always managed to show up for me as my closest friend even before we made it official and started dating during our senior year of college.
HOW DID HE PROPOSE?
One day, Andrew totally surprised me by proposing at the bottom of our staircase at home. It was such a sweet, private moment—just the two of us and our puppy, Hazy!
WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST DANCE SONG, AND HOW DID YOU CHOOSE IT?
We decided to forgo a first dance as we had a very small, intimate ceremony and reception and were too eager to get our celebration started with our friends and families.

HOW DID YOU KNOW YOUR SPOUSE WAS THE ONE?
He was there through all the hardships and trials. He was always ready to be there for me, always sticking up for me and always traveling for me.
HOW DID HE PROPOSE?
Jackson proposed at the Birmingham Botanical Gardens. We then went to our surprise engagement party afterwards!
WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST DANCE SONG, AND HOW DID YOU CHOOSE IT?
Our first dance song was “Joy of My Life” by Chris Stapleton. We are huge Chris Stapleton fans and have always loved this song.

HOW DID YOU TWO MEET?
Peter’s Perspective: Caroline and I met on Hinge. Once we matched, I asked her out right away. However, we didn’t go on our first date until two weeks later because she got sick right before our date, and then I was out of town for ski trip. As it turns out, the delay was such a beneficial jump start to our relationship because it allowed us to slow things down and talk daily, giving us the opportunity to get to know each other well before our first date. It made our first date so much better because we both showed up feeling confident about each other. The buildup and anticipation only made it that much sweeter!
HOW DID YOU KNOW YOUR SPOUSE WAS THE ONE?
I know this might not be romantic, but I knew Caroline was the one after our first big conflict. It felt like a big deal at the time, and it was a make-or-break moment in our relationship. However, once we figured out how to move forward, I knew I wanted to marry her.
HOW DID HE PROPOSE?
Caroline’s Perspective: Peter planned a surprise trip for us to Lake Tahoe. We spent a couple days enjoying the lake and visiting friends in Reno. On our final day in Lake Tahoe, he took me to my favorite spot on the lake—Sand Harbor— and proposed to me. To my surprise, he had a photographer hiding in the trees taking photos, and the best part was that my parents flew in for the surprise. It was perfect!
WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST DANCE SONG, AND HOW DID YOU CHOOSE IT?
Our first dance song was “The Moon Represents My Heart” by Teresa Teng. This is an iconic, Chinese romance song from the late ‘70s. This song has significant meaning to Peter and his parents. We chose it not only as our first dance song, but also as a meaningful tribute to his parents.

Mackinac Island: an idyllic, charming island town located in Lake Huron between Michigan’s upper and lower peninsulas. Since no motor vehicles are allowed on the island, the main forms of transportation are walking, bicycling or traveling via horse-drawn carriages. The island is full of Victorian architecture from when it became a popular destination in the 1800s and was named the number-one island in the continental United States by Travel + Leisure in 2022. Visit the island to be transported to a simple lifestyle of carriage rides and leisurely walks, paired with the natural blue water and rock formations.

The island can be reached by flying into either Pellston Regional Airport or Chippewa County International Airport. Take a shuttle from the airport to Mackinaw City, then a 20-minute ferry ride to the island. Once you arrive, there’s no shortage of unique, beautiful inns and bed-and-breakfasts at which to stay.
Chippewa Hotel Waterfront is located across the street from Historic Fort Mackinac. It is home to Pink Pony on Mackinac Island, an ever-iconic restaurant and bar famed for its pink interior and American fare. The hotel also boasts a large hot tub that visitors will adore. Mission Point Resort’s beautiful 18-acre property sits on the edge of the lake, providing views from the lawn and the guestroom windows. It’s located on the sunrise side of the island and is the only dog-friendly resort on the island.
Lake View Hotel dates back to 1858 and boasts a beautiful, Victorian exterior with fully renovated rooms inside. It’s located on Main Street, just steps away from the shops and restaurants that the downtown entertainment district has to offer. Lake View also provides an indoor pool and hot tub—the only one on the island.
First opening its doors in 1889 for summer tourists, Grand Hotel stands atop a hill with its grand porch overlooking the lawn. The hotel is home to 13 different restaurants and bars, and it maintains old-fashioned elegance by requiring elevated evening attire after 6:30 p.m. in the main areas.

Mackinac Island is known for its world-famous fudge, and the shops collectively make more than 10,000 pounds of fudge every day while in season. The island also features more than a dozen fudge shops, and tourists can take a stroll down Main Street, trying out the free samples. The original Mackinac Island fudge shop, The Original Murdick’s Fudge, notably makes its treats on a marble table in front of guests, inviting them in with the sweet smell of fresh fudge.
For dinner, go to The Carriage House in Hotel Iroquois for waterfront dining, a nightly pianist and classic American cuisine, or try Kingston Kitchen at the Village Inn for American classics with a Jamaican flair. Woods Restaurant also serves American and European foods with a slight twist: in a grand Tudor mansion. Adjacent is Bobby’s Bar, which has the oldest duckpin bowling alley in the U.S. Pink Pony comes highly recommended as a place to get a drink and a bite to eat.
To top off the evening, take a sunset stroll on the Main Street Boardwalk, and sample ice cream from Sadie’s Ice Cream Parlor, located at both Grand Hotel and on Main Street.

What is there not to do? Mackinac Island offers the perfect amount of vacation activities for both a relaxing and invigorating trip. For a romantic and relaxing honeymoon, curl up with a good book in the Adirondack chairs on the lawn overlooking the water at Mission Point Resort. This lawn is open for any visitors to the island.
Mission Point Resort and Grand Hotel also offer spa-andsalon options to enhance vacation relaxation. Tour the island in style by taking a horse-drawn carriage tour with Mackinac Island Carriage Tours. Spend a morning golfing on The Jewel, and take their horse-drawn carriage ride in between nines.
For the active couple, spend time together out on the water kayaking and snorkeling with Great Turtle Kayak Tours. This company also has an option for kayak cruises at both sunrise and sunset. Take a boat tour around the island with Ugly Anne Tour Company to learn more about the island and northern Michigan. Take in the views by walking, running or biking the island’s more than eightmile-perimeter on M-185, the carless highway. Along the way, you’ll pass by Arch Rock and countless other lookoffs and beach spots.
For a taste of history, visit Historic Fort Mackinac—the oldest building in Michigan—first built in 1715. It was used in the War of 1812 and has 14 restored buildings on the property that are open to the public. To visit other historic sites and buildings on the island, tickets can be purchased for less than $20 for adults.

The Island’s Most Scenic Spots and Best Photo Destinations
On a walkable island with so many natural rock formations and beach sunset opportunities, make sure to get out to these spots to appreciate the natural beauty of the island.
Arch Rock absolutely tops the list for must-see views. This iconic rock formation arches over the bright teal water and makes for a stunning backdrop. The view can be reached by climbing up 207 steps or by taking a carriage.
The East Bluff is made up of a cliff of absolutely incredible views overlooking the water.
Make sure to take the short trip from town to see Sugar Loaf, a 75-foot-tall stone tower in the middle of the forest.
Sunset Rock is about a 45-minute-long walk from downtown, but it is worth it to see one of the island’s best views of the sun setting over the water.
Even the easiest option is still a stunning way to watch the sunset. After dinner, take a stroll on the boardwalk not far from downtown and enjoy the company that gathers to watch the sun paint the sky orange over the water.

Fellowship in
Battle of the Bands
Battle of the Bands in the Rocky Ridge Business District is one of those hidden gems that may not be on everyone’s radar. Local school kids perform, creating a lively atmosphere and showcasing young talent. Plus, it is free to attend!
Wald Park
Wald Park is truly an asset to the city, especially the Miracle League Field. My family has volunteered there several times, and you always walk away with a smile on your face.

Eat Local Samurai Japan
Vestavia Hills offers diverse dining from the Pimento Cheeseburger at The Ridge to the Shrimp and Grits at Bistro V, but my favorite dish would be the New York Sushi Roll at Samurai Japan. Samurai is one of our favorite local spots, and you can usually find us there once a week.

Old Oak Advisors
What I love most about my job is helping people achieve goals they once thought were unattainable. Clients have told me they never knew someone like me existed and wish they had met me sooner. They appreciate working with a fiduciary who does not charge commissions and partners with them to achieve their goals.
Sibyl Temple
Sibyl Temple is more than just a scenic overlook; it reminds me of our city’s humble beginnings more than 75 years ago and how far we have come since 1950, when those 96 people voted to make Vestavia Hills a city.
