WWhen my husband and I married a few years ago, we chose to display photos of the couples that took part in influencing who we both are— our parents and grandparents. We were blessed to have six framed photos, each of a couple who truly meant it when they said “until death do us part.”
Though I saw firsthand for some of them it wasn’t always easy, they looked to God, leaned on each other and chose to love even when they didn’t feel like it.
Last June, my grandfather completed his vow when he passed four months shy of my grandparents’ 70th anniversary.
At 94 years old and the preceding years, Poppy, as we called him, began to use his age as a reason he did not do much. Going to the doctor, eating normal meals and leaving the house were all things he deemed himself “too old to do.”
However, when it came to my grandmother, Tutu, he was never too old. If something was wrong with her, he took care of it or called someone who could.
I think this is a great example of what marriage is supposed to be. After all, if we are only concerned with taking care of ourselves, what is the purpose of the other person?
Nearly three years into our marriage, my husband and I have not endured much in the grand scheme of what may come, but I am so thankful to have this example and a husband who believes in that type of commitment.
As we go on in life, I know I have him to lean on and vice versa. May we all remember, life is not just about us and have care for other people.
In this issue beginning on page 52, I’m elated to share a piece of the stories of nine couples on the front end of that mission.
Before that, you can read about a man who brings a good time to each wedding with his DJ services on page 11. If you are or know someone planning a wedding or like to look at pretty things, check out our wedding content on garden parties (page 21), party favors (page 31), dress types (page 35) and pre-wedding celebration spots (page 45).
Poppy also knew how to have a good time and inspired that in others. That’s him in the photo, smiling and dancing with me, who is also smiling though I most definitely was not interested in dancing.
Here’s to loving fiercely and remembering to smile, even when we don’t feel like it.
With love,

When in Rome
By Sarah Adams | Romance
Ameila Rose, or Rae Rose to her adoring fans, is burned out from the years of maintaining her “princess of pop” image. Inspired by her favorite Audrey Hepburn film, “Roman Holiday,” Amelia drives off in the middle of the night for a break in Rome…Rome, Kentucky. When she breaks down in Noah Walker’s front yard, he makes it clear that he doesn’t have time or patience for celebrity problems. Amelia can’t help falling for the cozy town and her tour guide, but even Audrey had to leave Rome eventually.
Persuasion
By Jane Austen | Romance
“Persuasion” follows the story of Anne Elliot, who at 19 was persuaded by her family and godmother to break off her engagement to Frederick Wentworth, a penniless naval officer. Eight years after the broken engagement, Anne’s financially struggling family rents their estate to Frederick’s sister, forcing Anne and Frederick into an uncomfortable reunion. Will they be able to overcome misunderstandings and hurt pride? It’s Jane Austen, so we probably know the answer, but the story is written with beauty and humor and well worth reading.
Much Ado About Nada
By Uzma Jalauddin | Romance
Based on the Jane Austen novel, “Persuasion,” “Much Ado About Nada” tells the story of Nada Syed, a Canadian engineer whose life has not turned out the way she planned. When she attends her annual religious conference, she is awkwardly reunited with Baz. Nada and Baz have a past—some good, some bad and all of it secret. With the obstacles keeping them apart, will they be able to figure out how to move forward together?
Sweet Sorrow
By David Nicholls | Romance
“Sweet Sorrow” tells the story of 16-year-old Charlie Lewis, a forgettable boy who did poorly on his school exams and is stuck spending the summer looking after his newly divorced father. When he meets Fran Fisher, Charlie begins to hope for love in spite of himself. If he wants to be with Fran, Charlie must (appallingly) join the local theater company which is performing Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet.”
Celia’s House
By D.E. Stevenson | Romance
Celia Dunne may be an old spinster, but she’s no fool. She knows that changing her will to leave the grand family estate, Dunnian, to her grand-nephew Humphrey will ruffle feathers within the family. But Celia also knows that Dunnian has stood solemn and empty for far too long, and she intends for that to change after she’s gone. Humphrey’s children will turn the creaky old house back into a family home―just the way it was meant to be. Loosely based on Mansfield Park, this cozy, historical novel is full of appealing characters who struggle to preserve tradition while forging new paths.
Russ Randolph uses his DJ service to ensure everyone is having fun on a couple’s happiest day.
BY MICHELLE LOVE
PHOTOS BY JAMISON SKINNER PHOTOGRAPHY & CONTRIBUTED
FFor about a decade, Russ Randolph has brought the party to wedding days throughout the Birmingham and northern Alabama areas, enhancing those special days. Randolph is the owner and operator of Puttin’ on the Ritz DJ Service, a Trussville-based freelance DJ service that has garnered a reputation for ensuring a good time is had by all.
Growing up, Randolph said he always had a love for music. He sang in local choirs and gospel groups and said he’s enjoyed collecting music over the years. After majoring in radio television in college, he went into advertising for three decades; although he still did school-related DJ events, such as homecoming
dances and prom, on the side.
When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, Randolph’s advertising job was dissolved. However, he didn’t stay idle long as the universe began to send certain people his way.
“During and after COVID, because people knew I was a DJ on the side, my phone rang off the hook with weddings that were canceled,” he said. “I had these brides calling me crying because their weddings were canceled, and with so much pent-up demand, I thought, ‘Instead of going back into advertising, let me just see if I can do this full time.’”
Turns out, he could absolutely do it full time. In the
last 10 years Randolph estimates he’s done approximately 200 weddings—around 20 each year. In addition, he does wedding anniversary parties as well as karaoke pop-ups for events. He’s also involved in the Trussville Area Chamber of Commerce and does events for them. His Facebook page and website are full of glowing reviews from people he’s worked with over the years.
“Russ [Randolph] made our day super special. We could not have asked for a better DJ,” reads one review on the Puttin’ on the Ritz Facebook page. “He is very detailed and goes above and beyond to make sure your special day is perfect as can be. He even
took pictures and made a little video collage for us. You’re making the right choice by having Puttin’ on the Ritz as your DJ!!!”
Over the years, word of mouth has been one of Randolph’s best advertising strategies, though he’s no stranger to working on his own marketing.
“I’ve played at virtually every wedding venue within a 50-mile radius of Birmingham,” he said. “Just when I think I’ve played them all, a new one pops up though. I’m just very fortunate in that I’ve done so many. I get a lot of referrals. I’ll do a wedding, and then, one or more of the bridesmaids get married the next year and call me saying, ‘You did my friend’s wedding!’”
29th YEAR
In addition to playing the music, Randolph also acts as an emcee to the reception, where he said he guides the guests throughout the timeline from first dances and cake cutting to the bride and groom’s farewell. He also provides the dance floor lights and will do the ceremony music.
As music and music technology has evolved, so has Randolph. He said music streaming services have made things easier as brides can send their favorite wedding jams straight to him.
However, just because the technology has gotten easier does not mean Randolph has laxed his process. All clients will work closely with him
“I heard this years ago, and I’ve kind of adopted it: People will not remember the minute details of the wedding, but they will remember whether they had a good time.”

throughout the planning process. He refuses to text or email and insists on phone calls or in-person meetings, so he can be as thorough as possible.
“I’m very thorough with pre-planning,” he said. “I do an itemized call a week before the wedding with the bride and groom, where we run through all the music to make sure I have the music in the right order, and I have the right songs. I don’t ever want to fly by the seat of my pants at a wedding.”
Randolph estimates he has around 1,200 songs on his laptop. He breaks it down by categories, such as genre and decade, which plays a major role in setting the tone of the event.
“If you look at the person you’re working for, their point of reference is usually what were their favorite songs in high school,” he said. “If it’s a 50th

wedding anniversary, you can back it up 50 years and see what was popular at that time. I often get asked, ‘If nobody’s dancing at a wedding reception, what do you play?’ As funny as it sounds, these line dance songs like, ‘Cupid Shuffle’ or ‘Wobble.’ If nobody’s dancing and you play that and suddenly you have a full dance floor, what’s wrong with that? Are they my favorite songs? No, but everyone else likes them.”
He still uses his expertise to guide the bride and groom to find the balance between wedding classics everyone loves and their favorites that may be lesser known.
“I always try to tell couples: If you have a mix of ages at your wedding and you’re trying to entertain all these ages, you cannot shove your particular favorite genre on them if they don’t know the songs and can’t relate to them,” he said. “I always say, ‘It’s not a listening party, and if you send me a list that’s nothing but alternative music with a lot of obscure artists, nobody’s going to know the songs, and people just will not dance to songs they do not know.’”
Compared to other DJ services, Randolph said he’s always tried to keep his prices fair, so more people can afford his services. With the expenses of
wedding planning being high enough without DJ services, Randolph said he would rather do more weddings for a more affordable price than less weddings while charging what he deems as too much.
“I’ve found kind of a happy medium there,” he said. “You know, you probably have a budget you’re

working with, and then by the time you pay for a photographer and catering and the venue, how much is left for the DJ? I have parents tell me all the time, ‘We had no idea it was going to be this expensive.’”
He loves seeing people have fun, and he said in his mind, “The music drives the fun.” He said one of the highlights of his job that never gets old is being able to celebrate with people on the happiest day of their lives.
“If I can see people out on the dance floor, and I see them celebrating, dancing, having a good time, then I’ve done my job,” he said. “That’s rewarding to me. I want to make sure the couple has a good time but also that we entertain their guests. That’s challenging for me, and I like a good challenge. I heard this years ago, and I’ve kind of adopted it: People will not remember the minute details of the wedding, but they will remember whether they had a good time.”
Whether a wedding or other event, if Puttin’ on the Ritz is part of it, Russ Randolph is sure to bring a good time.

A Garden Party Affair
The Southern Planner, one of the Southeast’s premier wedding planning and design cohorts, offers their tips and tricks for throwing the perfect “garden party-themed” event.
BY SHELBY KNIGHT
PHOTOS BY EMILY GREEN CREATIVE
A garden-party celebration offers a quiet kind of luxury—an atmosphere that feels romantic, effortless and timeless. Rooted in the charm of elegant outdoor gatherings from generations past, today’s garden-party aesthetic blends soft refinement with modern whimsy. More and more brides are gravitating toward this style for the way it elevates a wedding day without feeling overly formal: gentle color palettes, heirloom-inspired details and naturally beautiful venues create an experience that is both elevated and inviting. As this look continues to rise in popularity, the question becomes how to execute it well. Here are the key elements we recommend when creating a true garden-party moment.
Florals
Florals are the heartbeat of the style. Choose blooms that feel freshly gathered—roses, hydrangeas, sweet peas and other soft, airy textures. Pastels or muted tones maintain that romantic, garden-grown feel and bring a sense of natural abundance to the day.
Wedding Dresses & Attire
Attire should echo the garden’s beauty. Gowns with floral appliqué, embroidered textures, soft movement or whimsical accessories like gloves or capes complement the setting and enhance the romance.
Tablescapes
Tablescapes allow the theme to fully bloom. Traditional china, layered linens, delicate glassware, petite floral clusters, patterned napkins and handwritten place cards add depth and charm. These details anchor the look and invite guests to linger.
BEHIND
THE SCENES
Follow these vendors on Instagram for more garden party-themed inspiration:
At The Southern Planner, we’re seeing more and more brides gravitate toward the gardenparty aesthetic. It’s a style that feels elevated yet approachable. Matching invitations and paper goods to the theme helps set the tone from the very beginning, while tea foods, light bites and signature beverages continue the experience throughout the day. Thoughtful touches like coordinated décor, layered tablescapes and romantic attire ensure every element works together. When done intentionally, this style creates a day that feels cohesive, elegant and unforgettable—exactly the kind of celebration our clients dream of.
A PARTY FAVOR
Whether as a thoughtful groomsman’s gift or as a treat for guests at a wedding reception, cigars elevate any occasion, bonding people together, slowing down time and transforming single moments into lasting memories. Terry Wester, co-owner of Trussville Cigar Co., believes these shared mementos represent a bride and groom’s gratitude for those closest in their lives. Here, he discusses four different types of popular cigars and what to pair with them for any celebratory event.

1. Sun Grown
Grown in abundance of natural light, Sun Grown cigars’ flavor profiles are richer and zestier than their shadegrown competitors. Smoking a C.L.E. 40th Anniversary Robusto, for example, one will taste a combination of nuts, cedar and touches of honey and graham crackers.
PAIRS WELL WITH:
Rum, bourbon and cognac
Slow-roasted meats
TERRY’S RECOMMENDATIONS:
Perdomo 10th Anniversary
Arturo Fuente Chateau Fuente
2. Connecticut
Famed for their golden wrappers, Connecticut cigars deliver mellow, creamy notes and are ideal for those new to cigar smoking. A classic, the Perdomo 10th Anniversary Champagne, is a nice, low-key smoke, making it a neat choice for group settings with diverse crowds.
A direct contrast to the Connecticut, the Maduro cigar is defined by its toasted, aged leaves and longer, fuller body. First-time triers are often surprised by these cigars’ tastes of dark chocolate, cocoa, molasses and baking spices—smoother, richer flavors that aren’t as harsh as one might expect given its presentation.
PAIRS WELL WITH:
Merlot, espressos and Single-Malt Scotch Smoked meats, aged cheddar and toffee
TERRY’S RECOMMENDATIONS:
Oliva V Double Robusto
Kristoff Veinte Perfecto
4. Arturo Fuente Rare Pink
One of Terry’s favorite brands, the Arturo Fuente Rare Pink’s line fundraises for breast cancer research. This elegant smoke features an Ecuadorian wrapper and a Dominican-grown filler for a well-rounded profile, giving off hints of fruit and floral undertones.

Dark chocolate and nuts

HOW DID YOU TWO MEET?
Cory and I met when I started working at Southern Company. We recognized each other from high school—though we’d never really talked back then. Not long after, he invited me to join a local kickball league, which turned into us carpooling, and the rest is history.
HOW DID YOU KNOW YOUR SPOUSE WAS THE ONE?
I knew Cory was the one because being with him felt so natural, like we had always understood each other. On our very first date I was so late, and instead of being upset, he was patient and kind. That moment showed me his heart. Since then, Cory has continued to show up for me in every way. He’s hardworking, caring and truly everything I ever hoped and prayed for.
HOW DID HE PROPOSE?
We had already been talking about marriage and had even started looking at a few venues. Cory told me he had scheduled a tour at one, but what I didn’t know was that he had worked with them to set up the chapel for a proposal. After the tour, he asked if we could take a walk, and when we stepped into the church, the aisle was lined with roses and candles. It was such a beautiful moment, and then to make it even more special, our families were waiting outside to celebrate with us.
WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST DANCE SONG, AND HOW DID YOU CHOOSE IT?
Our first dance was to “Perfect” by Ed Sheeran. I’ve always loved that song, and when I played a few options for Cory, it was the one that felt the most like us.

HOW DID YOU TWO MEET?
Our story began at a powder puff game my senior year of high school. Heath had recently graduated and was cheering on his younger brother. Although we were acquaintances, we had our first real conversation. That chance meeting led to a group outing to a haunted house and later, our first official date at Chuy’s, followed by services at Church of the Highlands—a perfect start to our faith-filled relationship.
HOW DID YOU KNOW YOUR SPOUSE WAS THE ONE?
Over the next 10 and a half years, our bond grew. I knew Heath was the one shortly after I met him. He has such a servant’s heart—He’s compassionate, selfless and brings so much joy into my life.
HOW DID HE PROPOSE?
During a family trip to the beach, my parents and I were headed to a nice dinner until my dad detoured to admire the iconic Alys Beach’s white pillars. There, waiting in the sand with a dreamy setup of umbrellas and pillows, was Heath. As the sun began to set, he shared heartfelt words and asked me to marry him. Family members watched from the boardwalk, and we celebrated later that night in a beach house Heath had rented for the occasion. It was a memory we will truly never forget.
WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST DANCE SONG, AND HOW DID YOU CHOOSE IT?
Our first dance song was “When a Man Loves a Woman” by Michael Bolton. We chose this song because it talks about a deep, committed love involving one man and one woman. The lyrics beautifully describe a man prioritizing the woman in every way and demonstrating love through actions (not just words). Heath has provided me with so much love and support throughout the years. He has consistently been by my side and goes above and beyond to make me feel special.

HOW DID YOU TWO MEET?
We both went to Hewitt Trussville High School and First Baptist Church Trussville together.
HOW DID YOU KNOW YOUR SPOUSE WAS THE ONE?
I couldn’t stop thinking about him! He left a positive impression on me in every area of his life. He was always so kind and intentional with each person he met and was always pointing others toward Christ.
HOW DID HE PROPOSE?
He proposed on a dock on the Riverwalk in Tuscaloosa. We would always have picnics or take walks to this one spot when he would visit me while I was in college at the University of Alabama. Funny story: There were actually fishermen fishing all around us on the small dock that he proposed on, and they got a picture with us afterward!
WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST DANCE SONG, AND HOW DID YOU CHOOSE IT?
Our first dance song was “Joy of My Life” by Chris Stapleton. This song represented our relationship so well, and we listened to this song all throughout our dating relationship. We also just love Chris Stapleton!

HOW DID YOU TWO MEET?
We both attended Troy University our freshman year but never met. After graduation we both ended up in the Birmingham area. On Sept. 3, 2023, Donavan direct messaged me, “Hey Kelly, we’ve got some mutual friends from Troy, and I recently moved to Birmingham. I wanted to see if you’re free to grab dinner or drinks sometime this week?” I replied, “Hey! Sure I would love to!” I left our first date thinking he could be my future husband.
HOW DID YOU KNOW YOUR SPOUSE WAS THE ONE?
For so long, I had prayed for a man that loves the Lord and would pursue my heart. I prayed for a person that would support, encourage and love me and point me toward Jesus.
All I can do is praise the Lord and thank Him for bringing Donavan to me. He is all of those things and more. The Lord has exceeded my expectations with Donavan.
HOW DID HE PROPOSE?
On a family beach trip, Donavan wanted to go on a walk. He tried to get me to put on my cover up, but I was stubborn and refused. I even tried to talk him out of the walk altogether! While walking, I insisted on staying close to the water. Eventually, he convinced me to walk a little farther up on the beach, and that’s when he got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. I was totally surprised and said “YES!”
WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST DANCE SONG, AND HOW DID YOU CHOOSE IT?
On April 2, 2024, I sent “Dance With You” by Brett Young to Donavan because it made me think of him the first time I heard it. His response was, “This might have to be our first dance song.” It was such a sweet moment! When we got engaged on May 28, 2024, I immediately knew this would be our first dance song.

HOW DID YOU TWO MEET?
Nick and I met at a HewittTrussville High School baseball game in spring 2019. I was a junior at HTHS, and he was a junior at Springville High School. One of my best friends told me she was interested in him, so I didn’t go out of my way to talk to him. Little did I know, he had a crush on me the whole time.
HOW DID YOU KNOW YOUR SPOUSE WAS THE ONE?
Nick is selfless, kind and cares for others. The moment when I realized he would care for my family and me is when my grandfather fell and was trapped in the guest bathroom. Nick was able to get the door open, lift him carefully and help him back to his room. The patience and attention he provided made that a defining moment for me.
HOW DID HE PROPOSE?
Nick and I went to dinner on April 13, 2024 with some close friends to celebrate their recent engagement, but he was secretly planning to propose to me that evening. He chose Sibyl Temple in Vestavia Hills; however he didn’t realize there would be so many prom groups there taking pictures. Our photographer pretended to take pictures of one of the prom groups, so I wouldn’t be suspicious. He proposed as the high schoolers cheered!
WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST DANCE SONG, AND HOW DID YOU CHOOSE IT?
Our first dance song was “Nothing Can Change this Love” covered by Jac Ross. Early in our relationship, Nick asked me to slow dance in his parents’ kitchen to this song, and it has been special to us ever since.

HOW DID YOU TWO MEET?
We both went to The University of Alabama but officially met through Hinge! We connected right away and spent my senior year together making memories that set the foundation for our relationship today.
HOW DID YOU KNOW YOUR SPOUSE WAS THE ONE?
I knew David was the one when I realized I could be my truest, most vulnerable self with him. We blended so seamlessly into each other’s lives that everything about being together felt natural and effortless. He’s always made me feel seen, supported and deeply loved. Being with him has always felt like home.
HOW DID HE PROPOSE?
As we were going into our third year of dating, David told me we were going out for dinner in downtown Birmingham. Little did I know, instead of driving to dinner, he took us to the top of Birmingham, overlooking the city. That’s where he got down on one knee and asked me to marry him! He had also planned the sweetest surprise—both of our parents were there! My parents had even flown in from Florida and were quietly hiding nearby, giving us a private moment before coming out to celebrate with us. Even though I blacked out the moment he opened the ring box, I immediately said, “A million times yes!”
WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST DANCE SONG, AND HOW DID YOU CHOOSE IT?
Our first dance song was “I Get to Love You” by Ruelle. Every time we hear it, we’re reminded of how blessed we are to have and love one another every day. I loved the song so much that I even chose to walk down the aisle to the instrumental version performed by a quartet—a violin, viola, flute and harp—which made it feel like the perfect full-circle moment.

HOW DID YOU TWO MEET?
We met at work. I became a chaplain at his company in Trussville, and we worked together for a few months before acknowledging feelings for each other.
HOW DID YOU KNOW YOUR SPOUSE WAS THE ONE?
We both had one of those moments like the movies when we first saw each other at a work banquet when I was introduced to his company. I walked past him, and out of more than 100 men, I noticed only him. When I got up on the stage to speak he said it was like lightning struck him, and he was like “Who is that?” and “What is going on?”
HOW DID HE PROPOSE?
On my graduation day from seminary he got our wonderful photographer, the same we used for our wedding, and convinced my parents to come. The photographer said, “Let’s take some funny shots, hop up on his back.” I didn’t want to because he was so sweaty, and I was in a white dress! Once I finally did, he whirled me around, set me down, got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. I walked across the stage with the rock on my hand and super happy.
WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST DANCE SONG, AND HOW DID YOU CHOOSE IT?
We danced to Cyndi Lauper’s “Time After Time” because it became our song when we talked about music we loved growing up. Chris is a big fan of 80’s music, but the words of this song became true for our relationship.
I knew I felt so safe with him, and everything was fun and easy the way it should be when you are young. We both knew what we wanted and had big goals and have seen most of them come true together.
HOW DID HE PROPOSE? He staged pictures at a site on campus at The University of Alabama because we met in college there. He organized with all of our friends, family and coworkers a surprise party to celebrate after.
WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST DANCE SONG, AND HOW DID YOU CHOOSE IT?
“Weight of Your World” by Chris Stapleton. We chose it because it represents being a team and helping support each other through good times and bad. We saw it performed live early in our relationship, and it stayed true on our wedding day.

HOW DID YOU TWO MEET?
We went to the same high school and had the same group of friends. We started dating when I was a senior in high school, and he was a freshman in college. There was lots of driving back and forth to Tuscaloosa, but we stayed together throughout college and have been together for seven years!
HOW DID YOU KNOW YOUR SPOUSE WAS THE ONE?
He is the most genuine person, has always been my number one and supported me throughout everything. I feel like he is my best friend and husband all in one!
HOW DID HE PROPOSE?
We were at the beach. (We always go to the beach together; it is one of our favorite places.) We had a nice dinner at Louisiana Lagniappe, and we went to go “walk” on the beach. He had a photographer, flowers and champagne all set up, and I immediately knew! I had been questioning it all day, and then it actually happened, and I was thrilled! He surprised me later with all of our friends back at the house to celebrate.
WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST DANCE SONG, AND HOW DID YOU CHOOSE IT?
We danced to “All Your’n” by Tyler Childers. The first time I heard this song at the beginning of our relationship, I knew I wanted it to be our first dance song. We always talked about it every time we heard it.
Honeymooners’ Harbor
By Kate Seaver | Photos by Mackinac Island Tourism Bureau & Contributed
Mackinac Island: an idyllic, charming island town located in Lake Huron between Michigan’s upper and lower peninsulas. Since no motor vehicles are allowed on the island, the main forms of transportation are walking, bicycling or traveling via horse-drawn carriages. The island is full of Victorian architecture from when it became a popular destination in the 1800s and was named the number-one island in the continental United States by Travel + Leisure in 2022. Visit the island to be transported to a simple lifestyle of carriage rides and leisurely walks, paired with the natural blue water and rock formations.
where to stay
The island can be reached by flying into either Pellston Regional Airport or Chippewa County International Airport. Take a shuttle from the airport to Mackinaw City, then a 20-minute ferry ride to the island. Once you arrive, there’s no shortage of unique, beautiful inns and bed-and-breakfasts at which to stay.
Chippewa Hotel Waterfront is located across the street from Historic Fort Mackinac. It is home to Pink Pony on Mackinac Island, an ever-iconic restaurant and bar famed for its pink interior and American fare. The hotel also boasts a large hot tub that visitors will adore. Mission Point Resort’s beautiful 18-acre property sits on the edge of the lake, providing views from the lawn and the guestroom windows. It’s located on the sunrise side of the island and is the only dog-friendly resort on the island.
Lake View Hotel dates back to 1858 and boasts a beautiful, Victorian exterior with fully renovated rooms inside. It’s located on Main Street, just steps away from the shops and restaurants that the downtown entertainment district has to offer. Lake View also provides an indoor pool and hot tub—the only one on the island.
First opening its doors in 1889 for summer tourists, Grand Hotel stands atop a hill with its grand porch overlooking the lawn. The hotel is home to 13 different restaurants and bars, and it maintains old-fashioned elegance by requiring elevated evening attire after 6:30 p.m. in the main areas.

WHERE TO EAT
Mackinac Island is known for its world-famous fudge, and the shops collectively make more than 10,000 pounds of fudge every day while in season. The island also features more than a dozen fudge shops, and tourists can take a stroll down Main Street, trying out the free samples. The original Mackinac Island fudge shop, The Original Murdick’s Fudge, notably makes its treats on a marble table in front of guests, inviting them in with the sweet smell of fresh fudge.
For dinner, go to The Carriage House in Hotel Iroquois for waterfront dining, a nightly pianist and classic American cuisine, or try Kingston Kitchen at the Village Inn for American classics with a Jamaican flair. Woods Restaurant also serves American and European foods with a slight twist: in a grand Tudor mansion. Adjacent is Bobby’s Bar, which has the oldest duckpin bowling alley in the U.S. Pink Pony comes highly recommended as a place to get a drink and a bite to eat.
To top off the evening, take a sunset stroll on the Main Street Boardwalk, and sample ice cream from Sadie’s Ice Cream Parlor, located at both Grand Hotel and on Main Street.

WHAT TO DO
What is there not to do? Mackinac Island offers the perfect amount of vacation activities for both a relaxing and invigorating trip. For a romantic and relaxing honeymoon, curl up with a good book in the Adirondack chairs on the lawn overlooking the water at Mission Point Resort. This lawn is open for any visitors to the island.
Mission Point Resort and Grand Hotel also offer spa-andsalon options to enhance vacation relaxation. Tour the island in style by taking a horse-drawn carriage tour with Mackinac Island Carriage Tours. Spend a morning golfing on The Jewel, and take their horse-drawn carriage ride in between nines.
For the active couple, spend time together out on the water kayaking and snorkeling with Great Turtle Kayak Tours. This company also has an option for kayak cruises at both sunrise and sunset. Take a boat tour around the island with Ugly Anne Tour Company to learn more about the island and northern Michigan. Take in the views by walking, running or biking the island’s more than eightmile-perimeter on M-185, the carless highway. Along the way, you’ll pass by Arch Rock and countless other lookoffs and beach spots.
For a taste of history, visit Historic Fort Mackinac—the oldest building in Michigan—first built in 1715. It was used in the War of 1812 and has 14 restored buildings on the property that are open to the public. To visit other historic sites and buildings on the island, tickets can be purchased for less than $20 for adults.

Essential Outlooks
The Island’s Most Scenic Spots and Best Photo Destinations
On a walkable island with so many natural rock formations and beach sunset opportunities, make sure to get out to these spots to appreciate the natural beauty of the island.
Arch Rock absolutely tops the list for must-see views. This iconic rock formation arches over the bright teal water and makes for a stunning backdrop. The view can be reached by climbing up 207 steps or by taking a carriage.
The East Bluff is made up of a cliff of absolutely incredible views overlooking the water.
Make sure to take the short trip from town to see Sugar Loaf, a 75-foot-tall stone tower in the middle of the forest.
Sunset Rock is about a 45-minute-long walk from downtown, but it is worth it to see one of the island’s best views of the sun setting over the water.
Even the easiest option is still a stunning way to watch the sunset. After dinner, take a stroll on the boardwalk not far from downtown and enjoy the company that gathers to watch the sun paint the sky orange over the water.

Dog Daze
My favorite city event is Dog Daze. I’ve loved it since childhood, and while it has grown over the years, it still feels like a true community gathering. It’s a wonderful opportunity to connect with neighbors and enjoy local vendors, crafts, great food and live entertainment. The Trussville Area Chamber of Commerce does an incredible job organizing it, and I love how it draws visitors from across the region. I hope readers will join us this year on the Historic East Mall on August 1, 10 a.m.-4 p.m.
Get Outdoors
Historic Mall
The Historic Mall is my favorite place to be outdoors. Previously serving as my parents’ high school and my middle school, the building brings back memories of Friday night football, my locker in fifth grade and an opportunity to visit the front porch named in honor of my parents, both proud HTHS graduates.

Sentimental Spots
First Baptist Church
There are many meaningful places in Trussville, but the most sentimental to me is First Baptist Church Trussville, where my husband, Keith, and I were married in July 1998. We were married in the old chapel, which has since been repurposed, but it still holds treasured memories—especially of my mom, Bonnie Melton, who is no longer with us, and the many loved ones who gathered to celebrate that special day. FBCT remains a place of deep significance and precious memories for generations of Trussville families.
Serving Residents
City Council Connection
My favorite part of serving Trussville is connecting with people from all walks of life—new residents, longtime families, young parents, Trussville City Schools students and our wonderful seniors. Trussville has grown from a small town of about 5,000 people when I was little, to a thriving community of more than 27,000, and our strong schools and quality of life continue to draw people here. I’m grateful for the opportunity to listen, help address concerns, encourage good citizenship and work alongside Mayor Ben Short and my fellow council members to do the most good for the most people.
My top two favorite dishes are the maple brussels sprouts at Ferus Artisan Ales and the Caprese salad at Corbeau Wine Bar. Each offers incredible food, drinks and atmosphere. Ferus has been the site of family milestones like my youngest daughter’s graduation party and my dad’s 75th birthday, while Corbeau is where I recently celebrated my own milestone birthday. Both are very special places with outstanding service and management.
