ON THE COVER

If Walls Could Talk
As Shaun Styers and Kelsey Allison look forward, the inside of their home hints at its historic nature.
HHello Shelby County!
For going on half a decade, I’ve worked for this company with our publications in Jefferson and St. Clair counties. At this point, I am elated to introduce myself as the new editor of Shelby Living, covering this county I have worked and lived in for most of my postcollege life.
As the temperature rises, daylight lengthens and flowers bloom, it feels fitting to welcome in this new season for me personally.
As for others you can read about in this issue, Tom Mims (page 47) is enjoying the opposite of a new job, the lack of one, as the Vincent resident is finally stepping into retirement.
In Alabaster, Alyse Elna Lewis (page 13) is back home after her latest screen debut in “Stranger Things,” and Thompson High School freshman Zoe Moore (page 23) is no doubt continuing swimming after earning her most recent win, a gold medal at the 6A/7A Swimming State Championships.
Shaun Styers and Kelsey Allison are looking forward to their next chapter, and you can take look inside their cozy Montevallo home on page 39.
Though they recently celebrated four years of business, Mama Suz’s Fried Pies (page 31) in Pelham continues to test out new flavors to offer the best, homemade fried pies they can.
Coincidentally enough, my husband began a completely new job last month. While this time involves change for us on the work front, maybe you’re stepping into a new season of life like Tom, enjoying a new win like Zoe or quietly evolving what you’ve had for some time like Mama Suz’s.
Whether you’re handling a new beginning, a recent pivot or continually striving for improvement, may this issue inspire you to lean in to whatever this spring has in store for you.
Hope you enjoy,

Jefferson State’s College Scholars quiz bowl team has achieved a major victory by placing first in the Alabama Sectional Championship Tournament! In January, sectional championship tournaments were held throughout the country to determine eligibility for the National Academic Quiz Tournaments (NAQT) Community College Championship Tournament. Jeff State went undefeated, winning 10 rounds, and continues to stand as the top ranked community college quiz bowl team in the state of Alabama, as well as one of the top teams nationwide.

The Youth Leadership Shelby County Class of 2026 gained a deeper understanding of law enforcement, the court system, and juvenile services. The highlight of the day was the mock trial! This gave students a first hand look at the steps involved in some of the processes and different roles required to make them run effectively. Thank you to the volunteers and leaders who made this day a success.

Alyse Elna Lewis returns to Alabaster following debut in “Stranger Things” season five.
BY ANNA GRACE BREEDLOVE
BY
BY

AA budding star, 13-year-old Alyse Elna Lewis’ fame has bloomed out of her Alabaster stomping grounds all the way to Hawkins, Indiana, since making her debut in the “Stranger Things” universe last year. The iconic Netflix hit series’ final season aired in three different volumes, first with “Chapter One: The Crawl” on Nov. 26, 2025.
Appearing in five separate episodes, Alyse’s character, Wendy, is first seen playing with a ball at her school in the season’s premiere. After having it taken from her by Derek, a fellow classmate and
show frontrunner with an epic redemption arc, Alyse said Wendy calls Derek a “not nice” word and carries on with her day.
Chuckling, she described Wendy as straightforward yet nonchalant.
“My character is so cool that I don’t really have to say much for people to leave me alone,” she said. “Wendy expresses herself with her facial expressions more than she does with how she talks.”
To get into character, Alyse joked that she chose to hone in on one of her “red flags,” overthinking, as it

became useful in preparing her for this role.
“I spent a lot of time thinking, looking at this name, looking at how I’m described,” she said. “I’m like 9, 10 years old (in the show). I have to think like that. At the time, I was actually 12, but I really had to think back to when I was 9 and 10: ‘How sassy was I? How expressive was I?’ I just really had to think back to when I was younger to channel into my role.”
Ironically, Alyse was around that age when she booked her first-ever acting gig: the role of Abigail in the horror film, “Oracle.” During the COVID-19 pandemic, she began taking virtual acting classes with Acting Out Academy in Vestavia Hills and later, with Kinnik Sky, a former “American Idol” finalist

and theater-award-winning actress.
Sky later referred Alyse to her agent, and she is now currently represented by J Pervis Talent Agency and Luber Roklin Entertainment.
While filming “Oracle,” Alyse said she was more afraid during her own scenes than she was watching the movie itself.
“When we actually started filming, we were not filming in the daytime,” she said. “We were filming at night.”
During one scene, she said she was supposed to run through a field of sugar cane, but due to her fear of bugs during filming, she could not seem to make herself run faster.

“I was running so slowly because I didn’t want anything to get me from the other side,” she said with a laugh. “This lady from the set decided that she would put on this camouflage suit, and she was going to stand there while I was running. I was so glad because without her, I definitely would not have been running through sugar cane. It was really scary actually.”
Over the next several years, Alyse would go on to book roles in TV shows such as “Atlanta” and “Queen Sugar,” as well as in movies such as “Girlfriendship” alongside Tamera Mowry-Housley. In June 2025,

“ I had never watched ‘Stranger Things’ before I got onto the show. I tried to watch it once but the Demogorgon scared me, and I decided I would never watch it again.

she made her debut as “Young Riri” in Marvel’s miniseries, “Ironheart,” and can be seen in episodes one, two and five.
All of these roles, she said, built her confidence up to audition for “Stranger Things.” At the time, she sent in a self-tape but did not hear back for almost a year amidst the 2023 Writers Guild of America strike.
When her parents found out that she got the part, they gave her a “Stranger Things” book to break the news.
“I had never watched ‘Stranger Things’ before I got onto the show. I tried to watch it once but the Demogorgon scared me, and I decided I would never watch it again,” Alyse said, chuckling. “When I got the part, I was a little confused. I was like, ‘Really? Me? What will I be doing? I don’t see how I play a role in this.’ I was also excited because that’s such a big show, and it’s amazing, and I got to meet some of the coolest people.”
One of her favorite scenes to film is featured midway through the season, when the show’s band of heroes tries to save a group of children who are at risk of being kidnapped by the infamous “Mr. Whatsit.”
“When we were in the back of the truck in the little freezer and Murray asked if it’s comfy back there, I didn’t even have to say anything,” Alyse said, referencing Wendy’s less-than-chipper attitude about her mode of transportation. “I could just give him a facial expression, and he already knew.”
While Wendy appears unbothered and suave on screen, Alyse said she felt anything but during filming.
“The first day on set was actually really nervewracking for me,” she said, later adding. “I was really nervous, and I went to my trailer and saw a book sitting on a little table in my trailer. It said, ‘Welcome to Hawkins,’ and then it said my character’s name. I was like, ‘Oh my goodness!’ It was from Jamie, the one who plays Vecna.”
Although he plays a ruthless, calculating serial killer, Jamie Campbell Bower, according to Alyse, is one of the kindest individuals she had the pleasure of working with on set. In fact, fame did not seem to affect even the show’s most popular stars such as Maya Hawke, who plays Robin Buckley, or Caleb McLaughlin, who portrays the beloved Lucas Sinclair.
“The first time we ever started working with Maya and Caleb, the first time I met them, I was really nervous, but they were actually super-duper funny and didn’t make any of the kids feel scared or uncomfortable,” Alyse said.

She began filming season five in May 2024, right around the end of the school year. Then a sixth grader at Thompson Middle School, she said she homeschooled for the entirety of her seventh grade year to be able to film “Stranger Things” and returned to Thompson to start the eighth grade with her friends.
Even after nearly a year of exhausting days and nights, Alyse maintained it was all worth it, especially after seeing her name roll in the credits for the first time.
“At the premiere, we saw the whole episode, and I, at the end, was crying,” she said. “I was like, ‘I can’t believe that I actually did that!’”
She attributed her success to her loved ones, especially her parents. Without them, she said, she never could have accomplished such a huge dream at only 13.
“My friends, they support me so well, even when I was not there for a full year,” she said. “They would still talk to me. They would still check up on me and see how I was doing. It definitely takes a lot of support from my family and friends. That, to be honest, is what helps me balance it all.”
Now back in Alabaster, Alyse is a full-time student, but she does have some upcoming projects in the

works. Though not at liberty to discuss as of press time, she said she believes her community will be pleased with her next feature debut.
As for “Stranger Things,” to those who have not yet seen season five, she said fans are in for quite the finale.
“I think they personally can expect an adventure,”

she said.
Looking forward, she said she is on an adventure of her own, and she has her fans to thank, as she ventures from the “upside down” out into the great unknown.

Recommendations from Dee Green
Circulation Manager at North Shelby Library

By Debbie Macomber | Romance
Dee Green started in a part-time position at North Shelby Library in 1999 and became full time later that year. Prior to that, her love of libraries began while on the library staff at her high school. Currently, she is the circulation manager and orders the fiction material for the library. Here, she recommends her choice reads for springtime.
“Wise, warm, witty and charmingly full of hope, this story celebrates the surprising and unexpected ways that family, friendship and love can lift us up.”— This book is fun and charming. Joan is not living the life she was expecting. She is widowed and an empty nester. With her sister’s encouragement, she goes to group therapy. It is there she finds her way to find love and true friendships. This endearing read is one of the best by Debbie Macomber.

By Vanessa Diffenbaugh | Contemporary Fiction
The Victorian language of flowers was used to convey romantic expressions: honeysuckle for devotion, asters for patience and red roses for love. But for Victoria Jones, it’s been more useful in communicating mistrust and solitude. Growing up in the foster care system, she had trouble connecting with people, but she loved flowers. Through that love of flowers, she found a way to connect. This is such a wonderful book that will engage many emotions.

By Celeste Fletcher McHale | Fiction, Romance
This book celebrates the friendships of three women. They learn what true friendship is about through hard times and secrets. This book has humor and a little sass that will touch anyone’s heart with a theme of protecting friends as fiercely as family even if the threat is something unseen. This book is for anyone who likes small town, southern living, and as a bonus, it includes a great hummingbird cake recipe.

By Mary Kay Andrews | Romance

Even if there are people determined to keep Annajane from getting what she wants, happiness might be hers for the taking, and the life she once had with Mason in this sleepy lake town might be in her future.
By Dorothea Benton Frank | Contemporary Fiction
With warmth, charm, heart and humor Dorothea Benton Frank takes us back to Sullivan’s Island, South Carolina. This is a story of love and transformation. When a nurse returns home from a tour in Afghanistan and realizes that her life has been changed, she must rediscover love and purpose from her son and her mother. From playing mermaid as a child to winning a gold medal, Zoe Moore keeps on swimming.
BY CARMEN BROWN

FFrom the time she was a toddler, Zoe Moore thought she was a mermaid, and she kept trying to prove it.
“We could never really relax at the beach,” her mother, Nedra Moore, said. “She would say, ‘Let me go in the water. I can swim. I’m a mermaid!’ If she jumped in the water and went under, she wouldn’t panic. She would just laugh.”
Call it a child’s intuition. A little more than a decade later, Zoe is a champion swimmer. At the recent 6A/7A Swimming State Championships, the Thompson High School freshman won gold in the 100m women’s backstroke, where she broke the Alabama High School Athletic Association record by one second. She also won the silver medal in the 50m women’s freestyle in the adaptive aquatics division.
But Zoe faced significant challenges from the literal beginning due to a birthing injury that left her with limited use of her right arm.
“I was born a month early, and I was much bigger than what the doctors expected me to be,” Zoe
explained. “So when I was born, my shoulder got stuck behind my mom’s pelvic bone.”
“When they pulled on her, it ripped her nerves that were in her neck that connect to the spine,” Nedra added. “It damaged her brain, her brachial plexus nerves, which also affected her eye, and so she also ended up having Horner syndrome.”
At just two weeks old, Zoe started therapy at Children’s Hospital four days a week. Then at nine months old, she had a nerve transplant.
“They removed some nerves from out of the back of her leg and put them in her neck to try to repair the nerves that they could, which corrected that Horner syndrome from her eye, and it gave her little movement,” Nedra said. “So she has movement in her thumb, like maybe her first three fingers, a little bit, but she doesn’t have any movement in her pinky.”
At 18 months, Zoe joined the Wet Tots at the Lakeshore Foundation with Coach Emily Mallard. She also had physical therapy with a woman named

Miss Sandie at the ARC of Shelby County, who would come out to the house to do therapy with Zoe a day or two out of the week. By the time she was 5, Zoe was doing gymnastics, baton, soccer and softball.
After she turned 6, Nedra decided it was time for swimming lessons. Nedra said it was never her goal for Zoe to join a swim team or compete. She simply wanted her to learn to swim for safety reasons.
“We took her to Katrina Justice, her swim coach, and she said Zoe may not be able to learn how to swim and said she would probably have to come back the next year,” Nedra said. “Well, literally within 15 minutes, Zoe was swimming. She was swimming like she had been swimming for years. She asked me if we could bring Zoe back the next week. And by the end of the second lesson, she
asked if Zoe could join her swim team. She basically stayed on the swim team at the Y up until Covid.”
Zoe said she continued to be fascinated with mermaids all throughout elementary school. However, she faced yet another obstacle when, after an accident in gymnastics class as a child, Zoe dislocated her right elbow and fractured her wrist. After a six-hour surgery, she had to wear a cast for several months.
“Once they removed the pin, her elbow became dislocated again because she didn’t have enough muscle to hold that tendon in place,” Nedra said. “And so, her elbow is still out of place right now, so she can no longer straighten her arm back out.
During her recovery and throughout the Covid-19 pandemic, she took a break from the pool. During this time, however, she rekindled her desire to

swim through shows like “H2O” and “Young Woman and the Sea,” based on the true story of Gertrude Ederle, the first woman to swim across the English Channel.
“After that, we found Lakeshore and the high school swim team, and I just slowly started falling back in love with it,” Zoe said.
Despite her challenges, Zoe believes in having a positive attitude and projecting that onto everyone she knows.
“My mom always taught me that I could do everything that I put my mind to, and I was never like, treated differently.” she said. “I did have people who did give me a hard time, but I always had more people who encouraged me and pushed me to continue going than the people who said something.”

Zoe said she does not let anyone’s negative comments bother her.
“A lot of my classmates asked me, they’re like, ‘Are you mad that you’re this way?’ Or like, ‘Do you wish you could do this?’ or ‘Do you wish you could do that?’” she said, “And my answer is, I can’t miss something I never had. This is all I know. Now, does it give me problems? Yes, it does, but I think it’s cool that I’ve grown to be able to look at the world in a different way, on how to adapt and do different things differently.”
Cole Pruitt, head coach of the Thompson High School swim and dive team, said Zoe is like a “magnet” for her teammates and everyone around her.
“She’s super smart, a ray of sunshine for everyone she meets,” he said. “Everyone on the team is drawn to her.”
Pruitt added he has been impressed with her work ethic.
“It doesn’t matter if she’s had a long day or if she’s tired or stressed,” he said. “She comes ready to swim. If you show me someone who works hard, I can show you someone who works harder.”
In addition to consistently practicing two hours a day, four days a week, Zoe has a special way of staying inspired and motivated during her sessions:

“I can do all things through Him who strengthens me.”
-Philippians
4:13, English Standard Version
She writes scriptures on the front of her legs.
“My two favorite verses are Philippians 4:13—I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me—and Jeremiah 29:11, which starts out with ‘For I know the plans I have for you,’” Zoe said.
Besides her parents, coach and teammates, Zoe also gets support from her younger brother. Their mom said though he can swim, his passion lies more in music, and he plays piano, saxophone and guitar.
“He does not miss a meet,” Nedra said. “He even carries her bags for her.”
In addition to being a champion swimmer, Zoe excels in academics as well.
“She is very good at science and math. She’s number 14 in her class and she’s preparing for honors and AP classes,” Nedra said.
She also loves choir and theater. Last year, she played Maria in her school’s production of “The Sound of Music.”
“If I’m not swimming, I’m either singing or I’m watching a musical, or I’m finding a new musical to have a new obsession over,” Zoe said.
Nedra, who is owner of Creations Galore and Moore in Calera, said that she cannot talk about how she got started in the bakery business without talking about Zoe.
“She was born in 2011, and I started baking cakes more to help keep my mind in a good place when we were going through all of that,” she said. “I wanted to be mentally in a good space for her. My purpose was birthed through pain.”
As for the future, Zoe is keeping her options as wide as the sea where she once played mermaid.
“I’ve thought about medicine, working with kids, pursuing a career in theater or even being a librarian,” she said.
Whatever she does, Zoe said what is most important is how she treats others, and she hopes that her story will be a source of encouragement for others.
“I thrive off of people. I like to make sure people feel seen,” Zoe said. “You never know how calling someone by their name or giving them a hug can change their whole day.”
FIVE QUESTIONS FOR
PHOTO CONTRIBUTED
Connie Edwards and her husband have been married for 34 years. They have three wonderful sons, each married to amazing young women, and four beautiful grandchildren. She graduated from the University of Alabama in Huntsville with a degree in computer science and worked as a software programmer before choosing to focus on raising their boys. She loves traveling, reading and learning, especially about history, and treasures time with family and friends. Her heart and passion center on helping children, which has led them to support organizations that advocate for and serve children.
How did you get involved in education?
We discovered Montessori when our third son started school and were immediately drawn to its philosophy of learning. We were amazed at how quickly he was learning—and even more so, at how much he loved learning.
What inspired you to found The Hillsboro School?
From that moment with our third son, I knew I wanted him to continue in Montessori education through high school. That experience inspired me to start a Montessori school that could guide children all the way through secondary education, nurturing both their knowledge and love of learning.
How would you describe what is different about Montessori learning?
Montessori education is different because it centers on each child as an

individual learner. In a thoughtfullyprepared environment, children explore and learn at their own pace, guided by teachers who support their natural curiosity. This approach not only helps students build strong academic foundations but also encourages independence, problem-solving and a love of learning. Beyond academics, Montessori nurtures respect, responsibility and confidence, equipping children with skills that last a lifetime. It’s about helping each child grow into a thoughtful, capable and curious person.
What would you say to someone considering sending their children to The Hillsboro School?
At Hillsboro, children are encouraged to explore, collaborate and grow at their own pace within a supportive, close-knit community. Montessori education nurtures not only academic skills but also
independence, confidence and a lifelong love of learning. The best way to see if our school is the right fit is to visit and experience our classrooms firsthand. I encourage families to schedule a tour and explore our website to learn more about our philosophy, programs and the ways we support each child’s growth and curiosity.
What are you most looking forward to with the new campus?
We are thrilled that our new campus will allow us to welcome more families into our community while staying true to the authentic Montessori education our students already love. The students are especially excited about the full commercial kitchen, which will allow us to provide homemade lunches. The new space also gives us more room for exploration, hands-on learning and creating a nurturing environment where every child can thrive.

Mama Suz’s Fried Pies serves homemade Southern staple for breakfast, lunch and of course, dessert.
BY LOYD MCINTOSH

IIf fried foods were art, then Susan and Adam Swindal would be a combination of Michelangelo, Pablo Picasso and Jackson Pollock. Operating out of their not-so-secret pie lab just off Highway 31 in Pelham, this mother-and-son duo is doing their best to not only keep this significant Southern culinary tradition alive, but also to update the fried pie for the 21st century.
“We want to bring back real fried pies,” Adam said. “My generation only knows the fast-food version, and it’s a world of difference when it’s handmade and straight out of the fryer.”
Mama Suz’s Fried Pies has quickly become a local favorite for the hungry and curious since the Swindals opened the doors in 2022. The first business for either of the Swindals, their journey to deep-fried world domination has a humble beginning. Still, word of mouth about their
traditional pies and quirky concoctions has created a stir throughout Shelby County and beyond.
Tucked away in the Alpine Square shopping center, Mama Suz’s has developed a loyal and growing following, despite the lack of street visibility. However, Adam said once someone finds their way to the shop, they’re hooked like a bigmouth bass.
“The thing about where we’re located is you’ve got to know where you’re going to get to us,” he said. “Every customer who finds us knows how to get back. “Usually, if they come in once, I’ll see them again the next week.”
Originally from Waterloo, Iowa, Susan moved to Birmingham in the early 1990s after marrying her husband, Harold Swindal, a native of Tarrant City. The family settled near Trussville to raise their sons, Adam and Matthew.

Lunch
MAMA’S PIZZA PIE

Dessert
PECAN
The classic pecan pie just made by Mama and turned into a fried pie!

Cooking for three hungry guys, Susan was always on the lookout for a new recipe to try out on the family. She was content being the family chef and never considered working in or owning a food business, but it was Adam who saw potential in her abilities early on.
“I’ve always known Mama needed to do something with cooking,” he said. “We’d eat something somewhere, and she’d say, ‘I wonder if I can make it better,’ and she always did.”
The true genesis of Mama Suz’s goes back to a trip to Susan’s home state of Iowa on the occasion of her father’s funeral in 2018. During the 12-hour-plus
road trip, the family stopped in Sikeston, Missouri, with the intention of grabbing lunch at Lambert’s Cafe.
The restaurant had a two-hour wait, so the gang decided to load up on some snacks at a nearby convenience store with a fried pie stand. Only Harold had any experience noshing on a fried pie. For everyone else, this was uncharted territory.
“I married a good ol’ Southern boy, and he always used to tell me about his mother’s or grandmother’s or aunt’s fried pies,” Susan said. “I always thought that’s something I’m never going to learn how to do because I didn’t grow up knowing how to make them.”

The family bought a batch, gave them a whirl once they returned home, and was unimpressed by their mediocrity. It was long before Susan decided to give a fried pie a try.
“They were the definition of like, OK,” Adam said. “My mom was quite disappointed after hearing my dad talk about it forever. So, she’s like, ‘I wonder if I can make an apple fried pie.”
Susan did some research, developed a recipe and presented them to the family. The verdict was unanimous, a rarity in the Swindal household.
“Typically me, my brother and my dad can never agree on if anything Mama makes is good. Two of

us are going to love it; one of them’s going to hate it. We can never all agree what’s good,” Adam said. “So, she makes these fried pies, and we look at her, completely dumbfounded.”
The pies were a hit.
“I just made up some fillings and then in some pie crust, fried them up, and my family actually liked them,” Susan said. “I thought, ‘Yeah, right. You know, you’re just being nice or something.’”
Susan took another batch to give to coworkers at the day care where she worked at the time, and once again, the response was more than positive. Susan had the right idea, but she was hesitant to

start a business. However, Adam, who was studying neuroscience at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, could see the potential. He changed his major to business to help launch Mama Suz’s for real.
“I had a bunch of excuses. I was like, “Well, you know, I’m not classically trained; my degree is not in business.’ I had had a whole list of reasons why I couldn’t go into a food business,” Susan said. “Adam changed around a few things and said, ‘I’ll be your partner.’”

For the first six years, the Swindals cooked pies out of their home kitchen, selling them at farmers markets, city festivals and other special events, but the goal was always to grow into a brick-andmortar location. They initially looked into spaces closer to their home, but Jefferson County’s loss is Shelby County’s gain as Mama Suz’s Fried Pies opened in February 2022.
Early on, they used modified store-bought crusts, but have always made every filling from scratch using fresh ingredients. Before opening the shop, they developed a new crust, going through almost a dozen versions before arriving at the perfect recipe.

The menu features plenty of traditional flavors like apple, peach, chocolate, cherry and pecan, but they aren’t afraid to experiment, creating some interesting sweet and savory varieties.
The menu has featured items such as a pizza pie, with mozzarella stuffed meatballs, pepperoni and marinara sauce, essentially a pocket-sized deepfried calzone.
In the mood for a little south-of-the-border flavor? Try the chicken burrito pie with pollo asado seasoned chicken, dirty rice and refried beans with a Monterey Jack and cheddar cheese blend.
Want something different for dessert? Mama Suz’s serves a turtle pie, filled with homemade caramel and pecans, drizzled with chocolate and another one inspired by the King himself, the Elvis, a deep-fried take on his favorite sandwich with peanut butter, banana and bacon.
Whether fancying something sweet or savory, Mama Suz’s has something to satisfy every craving.
Mama Suz’s Fried Pies is located at 2969 Pelham Parkway, Suite V in Pelham. It is open Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-7:45 p.m., and Saturday, 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Online order can be placed at mamasuzfriedpies.com.

Kennan Parker Manager, Sous Chef, and BBQer at Mama Suz’s Fried Pies
Kennan Parker began working at Mama Suz’s Fried Pies in February 2025. He met Adam Swindal, co-owner of Mama Suz’s a few years ago working at various restaurants in the Birmingham area. Swindal asked Parker to quit his job and work for him several times over the years. It took some persistence, but Parker finally made the jump, and it been nothing but buttery, flaky crusts and delicious fillings ever since.
How did you get your start in the food industry?
I started working in the industry by tossing pizza around for about five years while I paid my way through Jefferson State University and underwent their biomedical program. I graduated and wanted to live and work out of state, so I continued making pizzas while sending resumes all over the country to states I wanted to live in. A year or so of doing that to no avail, I began applying in state. I found a job in my field almost immediately working for one of the largest hospital manufacturers in the world. A few years in, I still found myself in the kitchen of various restaurants on the weekend. One day it clicked to me, and I found I was much happier in those hot Alabama kitchens, sweating and cutting the tip of my thumb off, than in the place I spent many years

studying and gaining an understanding for the medical field.
What’s been your favorite part of working at Mama Suz’s Fried Pies?
My favorite part about working at Mama Suz’s is that I get to come into work and hangout with friends while making delicious pies and sometimes eating those pies too.
How have you enjoyed crafting food for the community of Shelby County and beyond?
I’ve always loved cooking for people and seeing the joy on people’s faces when they eat the food that I have made. Everyone that comes in is always excited for pies. Once you see that giant pie painted on the window as you walk through the front door, all your worries flake away, and all you can think about is smells in the room
of freshly fried pies.
What’s the best item on the menu?
The pie that got me hooked was Mama’s Banana Pudding, I’m just a sucker for a good ol’ banana pudding. As of now that we put it on the menu full time and not just seasonally, the pecan pie is up there with the banana pudding.
What would you suggest to someone walking in Mama Suz’s for the first time?
You can never go wrong with the apple or the peach. Eat one of those and your taste buds will send you back in time to your mother’s kitchen. I will second the banana pudding and the pecan pies. A good breakfast pie is the sausage, egg and cheese, and as I myself make the BBQ pies, I would definitely recommend the BBQ chicken and pork pies.

Shaun Styers and Kelsey Allison’s house remains a firm foundation for love.
BY ANNA GRACE
The blue, farmhouse style home offers a cozy feeling of home regardless of the season.

WWhile some beginnings bloom serendipitously, Shaun Styers and Kelsey Allison’s love story began intentionally in a courthouse.
At the time, Allison was working for SafeHouse as a victim’s advocate. Styers had just begun working as an attorney in the district attorney’s office.
The two first met while discussing a case, but after realizing the silent tug on his heartstrings, Styers recused himself from the case and asked Allison out. Little did he know she was the daughter of Shelby County Commissioner Lindsey Allison, prompting his coworker to joke that “he just had to marry Kelsey (Allison) now.”
Not long after, Styers surprised no one but Allison, proposing to her in Judge Bostick’s courtroom—the same place they would later marry
in April 2017. It was also this very room where the two would adopt their daughter Jana Smallwood, Styers’s younger half sister.
The couple became parents to a teenager before their second wedding anniversary, and they wouldn’t have it any other way.
Smallwood is 24 now. She is following in Allison’s footsteps, having earned her bachelor’s in social work and working to earn her master’s in counseling from the University of Montevallo.
Allison said families come in all different shapes and sizes. Although theirs might look a little unconventional, it is one strengthened by their love for one another, and that’s exactly what their home reflects.
Originally built in 1909, this historic beauty has had many owners. During the 1960s, it was home to

Mrs. Vada Deal’s flower shop. Its showroom is now the family’s sunroom.
Instead of viewing their house as a fixer upper, the happy couple approached it as a restoration project, working to preserve the beauty in its architectural details along the way. Since purchasing their house in August 2022, Styers and Allison have leveled the foundation, repainted the exterior and redone the kitchen, laundry room and mud room floors, as well as the bathrooms and master closet.
Now, their house is back to its former glory. The
Strolling inside the foyer feels like taking a step back in time as the soaring ceiling echoes the beauty of fine craftsmanship preserved over time. The modern chandelier complements the refined hardwood floors—a balance where new and old blend beautifully. Now 117 years old, this house still features some of its original design elements, such as the intricate lace detailing between the glass window panes separating the sunroom and the foyer. Several doors still bear their original door knobs with matching skeleton keys.

pair not only loves the house in which they live, but also where they live. The Montevallo community is rich in connectivity.
They can walk to Orr Park or to a nearby restaurant for margaritas. They can peruse the farmers market or pop in to visit family members down the street.
It is the perfect place, they said, for their story to continue into its next chapter—one that may be shaped by new beginnings but will always be rooted in that same enduring love.

The clinking of stemware can just barely be heard over the waves of laughter crescendoing from this family-centric gathering space. The table is large enough to fit both of their loved ones, and on every wall, framed mementos hang as a reminder of the importance of family. The painting of the Shelby County Courthouse above the mantle is an original by local artist Amy Peterson. After adopting Smallwood as their own, they hung her adoption decree in the dining room and surrounded it with pictures of them together over the years.

Once a bright ruby hue, this sink was originally a dry sink first owned by Allison’s grandmother, Donna Leigh Jackins. During renovations, the couple restored the dry sink into a fully functioning vanity for their downstairs powder room.

In true farmhouse fashion, this walk-in pantry features dry and canned goods from floor to ceiling and even houses Allison’s Spice Village collection. Outside its walls, her family’s handwritten recipes are framed, and some date all the way back to 1922.
This farmhouse-style kitchen is just as rich in craftsmanship as it is in style. Allison’s uncle, Barry Woodham, owns Spring Creek Wood and makes beautiful works of art. He taught Styers everything he knows about carpentry, including how to make his own countertops, which are featured here.

Originally the sales floor of Mrs. Vada Deal’s flower shop, the sunroom is now a playroom for their nieces when they come to visit. Styers installed several hanging swings for them to use and incorporated a reading nook with a perfect view of the outdoors.

The living room rests in the heart of the home and is where the family spends most of their time. Hanging on the wall is a handmade quilt made by Jackins.

Rivaling the size of the master bedroom, the master closet features 24 cubbies to hold Allison’s shoe and purse collections. Along the walls hang rows and rows of clothes, which are organized by season and then color.

The master bedroom is chic and playful, complete with a giant pencil sculpture gifted to the couple by Jackins. It was created by artist Lou Hollingsworth.

Arguably the most intricately decorated room in the house, the “Harry Potter Room” features trinkets the couple has collected over the years. Inside, there are tributes to each of the books and movies, including the sorting hat, chocolate frogs, the golden snitch, Hedwig and more.

TOM MIMS ENJOYS FAMILY TIME AND THE OUTDOORS SINCE GRANDDAUGHTER’S GOFUNDME CAMPAIGN HELPED HIM RETIRE.
BY KATHARINE ARMBRESTER PHOTOS CONTRIBUTED

TTom Mims never expected to be working at the age of 86, nor did he expect his plight to be featured on national news outlets. Mims, a Vincent resident and doting family man, was thunderstruck when his granddaughter told him she had begun a GoFundMe campaign so that he could finally cease working.
“I’m amazed,” Mims said of the GoFundMe’s success. “It’s hard to believe; I just pinch myself.”
For eight years Mims took care of his wife fulltime, and financial worries mounted after she passed away in 2017.
“When my wife died, I went back to work to try to make things better,” Mims said, but the medical doubt still mounted. “I thought I was going to be working until I was 90 because that’s the only way I could see daylight.”
Before he stopped working to care for his wife, Mims had worked hard for four decades, often traveling throughout Alabama. Widowed, he now found himself returning to work at the age most people retire. Without complaint, he rose at 3 a.m. every morning to drive from his home in Vincent to the Piggly Wiggly in Columbiana, where he bagged groceries and pushed carts for six years.
His cheerful presence at the popular grocery store brought him friends, and Mims has nothing but good things to say about the people he met.
“Oh, I love my people at Piggly Wiggly,” he said. “Some of the best people come through there.”
However, his granddaughter, Candice Lash, watched him with love and concern.

“I could tell that the work was weighing on his body, and I asked him if he had the money he would retire, and he said yes,” Lash said. “He’s given his whole life to me.”
She recalled that when she was a child and mentioned she wanted something, her grandfather would work extra hours in order to make it happen.
“He loves me and my daughter so much,” she said. “I’ve always wanted to repay him but didn’t know how.”
Lash learned about the effectiveness of online fundraisers after she watched a video by a TikTok creator who travels the United States and once helped a man who worked in a grocery store due to the loss of his pension.
“It made me think of my grandfather, since it was a very similar story,” Lash said.
She began a fundraising campaign for Mims on GoFundMe, which is generally considered the world’s leading crowdfunding website.
In the description for her grandfather’s
“When my wife died, I went back to work to try to make things better. I thought I was going to be working until I was 90 because that’s the only way I could see daylight.”

GoFundMe page, Lash wrote eloquently of her grandfather’s dedication and integrity and made an earnest appeal to anyone who stumbled across his story: “He deserves rest. He deserves peace. He deserves to enjoy his great-grandchildren without worrying about bills or debt hanging over him.”
“I kept it from him for a few days, but then everyone started asking him if he was retiring, and he was asking me, ‘Now what are you doing on the Facebook over there?’” Lash said.
Mims is not on social media, but he knew his granddaughter sometimes posted about him in a Facebook page about Columbiana.
“I would tell people that it was Tom’s birthday; make sure you give him some love,” she said. “I posted stuff like that. Then everybody would go crazy over him. So many people cared about him

because of Piggly Wiggly.”
Lash set the limit for donations at $200,000, explaining the amount would significantly decrease the medical debt and enable him to retire.
“I want to give him something he’s never been given: the ability to stop working and truly live the rest of his life in comfort,” she wrote on the GoFundMe page
Soon after Lash started the GoFundMe, she was astounded by how quickly the donations poured in. Every time she checked the website the amount increased. When she finally told her grandfather about the GoFundMe campaign, the amount had risen to $6,000. It was enough to convince her to keep the fundraiser going, even

The GoFundMe set up by Candice
to retire her grandfather,
was successful. On Jan. 2, Piggly Wiggly Columbiana celebrated his retirement, followed by his last day on Jan. 3.

“I said, you’re not taking money,” Lash recalled. “These people want to give it to you; that’s the difference. They want you to have this.”
Soon after Lash revealed the existence of the GoFundMe campaign to Mims, the donations total rose to $10,000. Subsequently, the fundraiser went nationwide, and people donated from as far away as Colorado, Texas, New York and California. She and her grandfather were particularly touched when donors made the effort to email and send cards.
Surprisingly, Lash also received some negative comments from uncharitable people during the fundraiser. She chose to instead focus on the outpouring of kind words that were directed toward her grandfather. Not only did online donors admire his hard work, but Mims frequently received well wishes from strangers as he went about his day. Other online comments often commiserated with him about the too-frequent reality of crushing medical debt.
Strangers, friends and neighbors all hoped the GoFundMe campaign would be successful and that Mims could soon retire.
“We never, ever imagined it would get to $100,000,” Lash said. “That was insane.”

The GoFundMe has raised more than $115,000, and Lash believes that over half of that amount was due to the people of Columbiana and surrounding areas.
“It started out as a very small thing, and the reason it blew up was because of the people of Columbiana who have loved him for so many years,” she said.
After Mims announced his imminent retirement, Piggly Wiggly threw him a party with a large cake. He said it’s wonderful being retired and finally able to enjoy precious time with his granddaughter and great-granddaughter.
“He and Joyce (his wife) helped raise me, and I’m glad he’s still here for my daughter,” Lash said.
Mims cheerfully described himself as a homebody, and since his retirement he has more time for the outdoors than ever before. He, Lash and her daughter live on thirteen acres. He enjoys taking care of the house and yard and particularly enjoys playing with his great-granddaughter on her swing set.
From an idea on TikTok to an outpouring of generous donations, Tom Mims has clocked out for the last time.

Mayor of Harpersville

The best place to get outdoors in Harpersville is a corridor of farms. These farms are Old Baker Farm, Morgan Creek Vineyards and Stone Hollow Farmstead. The beauty of these places is aweinspiring. I enjoy seeing the farm animals and the unique plants. The atmosphere is relaxing, and you can get your exercise in without feeling like it was work.
My favorite event that the city hosts is our Quarterly Senior Luncheons. Seniors from all over the area come together to have lunch and fellowship. We usually have a speaker that has a location connection, and everyone enjoys the time together. It warms my heart as I see old friends greet each other and catch up on old times.

Coffee Shoppe Diner
My favorite dish to get at a Shelby County restaurant is a cheeseburger from the Coffee Shoppe Diner in Harpersville. It is made fresh to order from real ground beef. Whenever people ask me to recommend something local, I immediately tell them about this delicious burger. It has an authentic taste that takes me back to how burgers tasted when I was a kid.

I love serving the people of Harpersville because it gives me a chance to make a positive difference, including ensuring they have a better quality of life, from the drinking water to parks and from emergency services to business. I love being an ambassador for our wonderful community.
Tanyard Branch
One of our local creeks is a sentimental place that I like to visit when I am contemplating decisions, needing a quiet place or having a stressful day. The water is clear and calming and seems to take my stress away as it goes down stream. My dad took me fishing in the same creek when I was a young child. My mom’s grandad lived just a short distance from this beautiful spot.
