I have vague memories of singing patriotic songs—you know the ones— in a program when I was in preschool. I am confident I didn’t fully understand the meaning behind those lyrics, but at the same time I felt the freedom they described. That’s the thing about freedom, it’s easy to not think about it as long as you have it. Many years removed from preschool, Lee Greenwood’s lyrics “where at least I know I’m free” hit a bit different, particularly the words at least. It’s hardly a proclamation of a perfect country, but a simple acknowledgement of a privilege foreign to others across the word. That freedom began 250 years ago when a group of men signed a piece of paper declaring the freedom they were willing to fight for, and then they did. Since then, a lot has happened, some good, some bad, some depends on who you ask, and we couldn’t possibly fit it all in the 88 pages of this magazine. Still, you’ll find a variety stories in this issue that represent different facets of this country. If you’re looking to learn more about American History or join a huge celebration this Independence Day, American Village (page 23) is the spot. Throughout the year, they’re open for field trips and family visits, but this July 3 & 4 are going to be the biggest yet. While not 250 years, AmFirst is celebrating its 90th anniversary this year, and CEO Kevin Morris (page 47) is remind everyone of the importance of community, not just in business, but in day-to-day life. For those focused more on the bad and anyone wanting to be inspired, take a look at the work of Emma Gilbert on page 13. Often tough times breed some of the best art, which can encourage those are of us who are not as artistically gifted. If you can’t make it to the lake this year or are looking for decorating inspiration, check out Bill and Leigh Ann’s patriotic-themed lake house on page 39. We’d be remiss to talk about the biggest Fourth of July celebration to date and not include one of the most popular foods for this time, so Brother Paul’s BBQ is on page 31. While few things feel more appropriate to feel your stomachs this time of year, Brother Paul is sending a message that what’s in the heart is even more important. As you flip through this magazine and further celebrate America’s semiquincentennial, consider the freedom you have. Emma Gilbert’s jobs often begin high above the ground, balanced on a narrow platform with a paintbrush in hand and hours of tireless physical and mental work ahead. Twelve hours will pass before she comes back down as she turns an empty surface into something that speaks. “The mental and physical load of it all (is the biggest challenge),” Gilbert said. “It’s not even necessarily the painting itself because that’s easy for me, but waking up, spending twelve hours on a boom lift, standing in one place, not really eating as much as I should, that’s the most challenging thing. That’s a part of murals that people don’t see.” What people do see are the finished pieces: bright, full of meaning and integral to a community. Gilbert sees it as her calling to create these works of art. That calling began in Birmingham in 2020 with a single wall and a sense of possibility. “2020 is when I did my first mural in Birmingham at Botanica, the plant shop. I did that one before we got on the road,” she said. “That was like, ‘OK, this is really cool. I could do this again.’ But then it was a year later until it became an actual career.” In that year, something shifted. What started as a one-off project grew into a larger vision, one that would take her beyond Alabama and into a rhythm of travel and creation. As she spent more time on the road, it became a workspace for her mind. “So the birth of an idea is not necessarily a process. They’re kind of like slideshows in my head,” Gilbert explained. “Typically they’re really intense when I’m driving. I get to sort through all the different images in my head, and then I pick the one I like the most. Then I sit down, and I draw some thumbnails. Once I get to the actual design portion, I’ll start piecing images together.” As her ideas take shape, her murals are crafted with clients in mind. Each one begins with a conversation, a question that goes deeper than surface-level aesthetics and searches for the innate meaning that a client wishes to portray. “If a client comes to me and says, ‘I want this mural to be rainbows and sunshine,’ I’m gonna be like, ‘OK, well, how do you want it to feel?’” she said. “And then I can, depending on how they want it to feel and how they want it to transform the space, use that and then create the images in my head. I use my style, but then I go off what they’re feeling.” That emotional starting point is what allows her work to shine. It’s also what makes maintaining her ShelbyLiving.com

artistic voice so critical, because without it, the work loses its meaning. For Gilbert, meaning isn’t optional. It’s the reason why the artwork exists in the first place. “I think it’s important to create art that inspires the youth especially, and then inspires people who want to maybe do this for themselves in the future,” she said. “I think it’s important to have some kind of meaning behind art so that the public doesn’t look at the mural and go ‘What’s the point of this?’ I want it to mean something.” That desire to connect to people, to offer something real in a public space, is also what fuels her perspective on creativity in a broader, modern context. In a world where artificial intelligence seems to be seeping into everyday life, Gilbert urges artists to create above all else. “Art is supposed to have soul, and ChatGPT does not have soul,” Gilbert said. “It kind of goes back to, ‘why create when the world is on fire?’ That’s what artists have always done. We’ve done it for centuries. That’s how we connect with the public. That’s how we connect with ourselves. It’s almost like asking, ‘Well, why do you need to breathe if the world is on fire?’” For Gilbert, art has always been a form of connection, even before it became a career.

I think now it’s a means to survival, and then it’s a means to creating meaningful art that represents adulthood,” she said. Gilbert plans to expand her business into a gallery where other artists can host their works someday. “Eventually in the next five years, I want to have a studio that people can come to, similar to ABV in Atlanta. I want artists from all over the country to have their paintings in my gallery and then also have a supply store and then a mural agency separate from that,” she said.

For now, her work as a muralist endures as she continues to travel, paint and learn. She encourages upcoming artists, especially muralists, to continue working even when they’re tired, feel like this work isn’t good or want to cry. “Keep going. As the season continues, an exciting lineup of events awaits, including a new gallery exhibit, the return of TEDxAlabaster, performances in the Song Theater and auditions for our first adult theater production—all happening this July and August. “Color + Sound,” a tactile art installation inspired by the music of Dave Crenshaw, returns to the EBSCO Fine Art Gallery on Saturday, July 25. Originally premiered in 2022, this year’s exhibit features five new artists: Michelle Branson, Jennifer McConnell, Rae Lynn Dodson, Banks Compton and Michelle Reynolds. Each offer a hands-on interpretation of color based on Crenshaw’s album. Created especially for individuals who are blind or have low vision, the exhibit invites all visitors to experience art through touch, encouraging a more inclusive connection to creativity. The opening reception will be held July 25 from 6-8 p.m., and the exhibit will remain on display through Sept. 10, with gallery hours Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. TEDxAlabaster returns to the Song Theater on Aug. 1 with the theme “What We Know Now.” This year’s event explores how knowledge transforms the way we live, work and connect. Through powerful talks and personal stories, speakers will share lessons learned, breakthroughs shaping our understanding and insights that continue to move us forward. Experience. Breakthrough. Insight. Auditions for the first adult theater production, “Steel Magnolias” by Robert Harling, will be held Aug. 3 beginning at 6 p.m. Directed by community crochet instructor Dyllon Johnson, the production offers a fresh, creative perspective on this beloved and heartfelt story. Those auditioning should prepare a 1-2 minute monologue in any style, as auditions

will include both cold reads and a prepared selection. This is a meaningful opportunity for local performers to take the stage and connect through live theater. To close out the summer, the Song Theater will host three special performances in August, beginning with the Maverick Lounge Series, “The Story and Music of John Lennon,” on Aug. 7 at 7:30 p.m., an immersive evening celebrating the songwriting and cultural legacy of John Lennon through live music and storytelling. The series continues with the return of Sean Dietrich, “Sean of the South,” on Aug. 16 at 4 p.m., delivering his signature blend of humor, heartfelt stories and Southern charm. The month concludes with Eric Essix on Aug. 30 at 5 p.m. for a special Sunday jazz matinee. With a career spanning more than 32 years and 29 albums, Essix is known for his smooth contemporary jazz style that continues to captivate audiences with energy and artistry. When visitors first enter the new multisensory foyer in the West Wing of Independence Hall at American Village, it looks like a typical art gallery. As they walk along, however, the paintings come to life. The historical figures start to whisper and talk, moving into a lively discussion. As King George’s portrait is taken off the wall, he starts yelling, “Put me back up on the wall!” The center portrait is of John Adams, Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson writing the Declaration of Independence while bantering with King George III. Abigail Adams, Mercy Otis Warren and Phyllis Wheatley are talking to the gentlemen writing the Declaration, saying “Don’t forget about the ladies!”

and they sit at desks just where the delegates would have sat, and they get to sign their own copy of the Declaration of Independence to take home.” That’s a normal day for the hundreds of schoolchildren and visitors who come each year from all over the Southeast, where they’re thrust right into “real-life” scenes of American history. This summer, American Village has gone above and beyond its regular activities to celebrate America’s 250th birthday, with a special celebration on July 3 and 4 called Sweet Home 250. Two years ago, Alabama Governor Kay Ivey designated American Village as the state’s Semiquincentennial Celebration Capital. Poole said Sweet Home 250 will be directly related to the Declaration of Independence and what was happening in the country around that time period, but it will be so much more than normally would take place on an Independence Day celebration. “We generally stick to the founding-era history, 26

time period of the American Revolution, but this event is different because we are telling all 250 years of America’s history,” Poole said. “We will have a lot more on Alabama’s history as well because Alabama’s history is America’s history.” America 250 Commissioner and American Village Chief Education Officer Val Crofts elaborated on the many ways Alabama has contributed to American history. “The contributions of the state, and even before that as a territory, have been numerous,” Crofts said. “From military contributions to leading the way in technology and agriculture, to civil rights advances and athletics, Alabama has given contributions to the American story for the past 250 years and will continue to do so. Visitors will be able to meet and interact with our founders and hear the stories of the creation of our country. There will be history talks, vignettes and total immersion in the celebration of the Declaration of Independence.” Sweet Home 250 will feature American Village’s costumed, historical interpreters, who portray countless historical figures including George and Martha Washington, John and Abigail Adams, Samuel Adams, Patrick Henry, Lucy Knox and Betsy Ross. Moreover, one of the many things that’s different about American Village is that everything takes place in a backdrop of replica buildings from America’s history, including Mount Vernon and the President’s Oval Office.

“You can sit on the furniture, and you can touch things,” Poole said. “They’re not behind velvet ropes because they aren’t actually historic artifacts.” The first wing of American Village’s newest building, Independence Hall, opened in 2022, and the central wing opened last year. According to Poole, the last wing, which will be the Karl C. Harrison Gallery of George and Martha Washington, formerly located in Columbiana, is planned to open later this year. “It will house the largest collection of George and Martha Washington artifacts outside Mount Vernon,” she said. “Those will be actual artifacts, and it will be in a museum-style setting, so they will be protected.” 28

In celebration of America 250, the education staff at American Village put together a special classroom toolkit, downloadable on the website, that contains 500 pages worth of free materials, including art projects, coloring books, music lessons and more. “Our lesson plans are some of the best in the country, so the students do come pretty well prepared for what they experience,” Poole said. “We’ve had more than 25 states download that online. The White House Task Force (250) has also downloaded that toolkit.” As far as future plans, Poole said that American Village plans to increase the number of educational opportunities for high school students. “We do have a new high school program that just

debuted this year that will get a little revamp for next year,” Poole said. “It’s called Cornerstones of Freedom, and it centers around the United States Constitution and takes place primarily in the new Independence Hall building.” American Village, which opened on Nov. 30, 1999, was the vision of founder Tom Walker, who was then special assistant to the president of the University of Montevallo. Poole said that Walker, who had degrees in both history and political science from the university, wanted to make learning history more exciting and interactive, especially for children.

Walker passed away last September, but Poole said she sees the fruits of his labor in the faces of the children who visit each day. “We find many times that these children become the teachers,” Poole said. “They go home and teach their parents what they learned. These children are leaders today, and they will be our leaders tomorrow.” American Village is located at 3727 Highway 119 in Montevallo. Kaelci Theuri recently graduated from Thompson High School. During her senior year, she served as a Skills USA State Officer as well as Thompson High School’s Student Government Association President and Debate Captain. She is also the first Thompson High School student selected to attend the United States Senate Youth Program in Washington D.C. For as long as she can remember, she has been fascinated with exploring how words have the power to change the world. It is her hope to continue her passion for leadership and advocacy into her future endeavors. What was the overall experience like at the United States Senate Youth Program? It was absolutely magical. I immediately found myself surrounded by so many bright minds. There were 104 delegates from across the United States and the world (Department of Defense Education Activity), all of which shared a passion for public service and a genuine desire to change the world. During the week, we traveled to different executive departments, including the State Department, the Department of Agriculture and the Department of Defense. We not only were able to hear from leaders in these respective fields, but we were allowed an open dialogue to ask them questions. 30

What was the most impactful lesson you learned during the program? I had the privilege of meeting Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson where I received a chance to ask her questions. One lesson that stayed with me is the importance of listening keenly to the needs of others. What are your plans after high school? I have not committed to Yale University, and I plan to major in political science with a focus in international relations and national security and afterward attend law school. I ultimately aspire to a life of public service in government.

How will your participation in the program impact those plans? The United States Senate Youth Program has given me exposure to all the different factors in government. It has also shown the mark and traits of a leader: composure, communication, and conviction—all of which I am continuing to develop. Through this experience, I have realized the power I have to make my dreams a reality and the path it takes to achieve them. What is your advice to others looking into the program? Go for it. If you have any interest in leadership, service or government, then this program will benefit you tremendously. I would say to be authentic in your application process, and really just highlight what makes you unique.

Nothing represents the South quite like Southern hospitality and getting friends and family around the table filled with classic barbecue. Beyond the smoked meats and homemade sides, barbecue has always been about bringing people together and building community. For Paul Curcio, owner of Brother Paul’s BBQ in Alabaster, barbecue is much more than a business—it is a calling. Curcio has been in the barbecue business for about 20 years now and has learned lessons that go far beyond cooking. His journey has taught him about perseverance, faith, service and the importance of building meaningful relationships within the community he calls home. He got his bearings in the barbecue industry while working at Golden Rule Bar-B-Q and Grill from 2007 to 2022, which ended when the

COVID-19 pandemic shut the location in Pelham down. From there Curcio needed a plan on how to continue. He then started a small Golden Rule in a gas station in Alabaster. This lasted about 8 months until it was time to move to the next location, Brother Paul’s BBQ located inside creACTive Wellness Center, which opened Oct.15, 2024. During the process of opening up Brother Paul’s, Curcio was raising money to buy the building next door to house his ministry in. He had never done anything like that before and kept running into dead ends until opportunity landed in his lap. “I was doing yoga here a couple of years ago, and this café was available,” Curcio said. “That’s where God gave me the inspiration to work with the landlord here, work with the city and the fire

department to get approved, and then we figured out a way to serve and adequately have a full-service restaurant in a yoga studio.” In just a small amount of time Curcio was tapped into the community and making connections ranging from local organizations, ministries, business leaders and residents. His involvement has stretched far beyond simply operating a restaurant. From participating in the Alabaster Business Alliance to operating a food truck and serving individuals experiencing homelessness or addiction recovery, Curcio has worked to make Brother Paul’s a community-centered business. “The people in this building have been really good, and the people in Alabaster, not only the city, people that work in the city, but the people who live

in this community have been wonderful,” he said. “They’ve been so supportive, they’re very helpful.” During this journey, Curcio started his own ministry, the Universal Peace Officers. The purpose of his ministry is to spread peace, love and compassion through prayer. The mission is to remind people to be centered and to love God and themselves. “The Universal Peace Officers is foundational in the inspiration of why I’m doing the barbecue, and one of the goals we have is to have the restaurant,” Curcio said. However, his mission does not stop there. He hopes to be able to find someone to oversee his ministry, to help initiate fundraising and to help with grants, so he can eventually go feed people in the community for free. ShelbyLiving.com

“My goal is to eventually to be able to raise money through the Universal Peace Officers, take the food truck and go feed people in the community for free, whether that’s the homeless people or people in recovery,” he said. Curcio has a strong devotion for helping people in need while also inspiring others to be better for themselves, which has in turn motivated him to see the bigger picture when it comes to having a barbecue restaurant. “I think one of the best things is I get to do nothing other than be myself, and God will use me to help others,” he said, while later adding, “It is all about 34

being a part of something bigger than me.” Alabaster is home for Curcio, and he had no hesitations about opening his business in the town; he had a good feeling about following his dream. “I just had a feeling that the community would embrace me, and they have,” he said. “They really have been fantastic. They do a great job of sharing and helping let other people know that we are here and that we have good old school (barbecue) with a side of peace, love and compassion.” Now, Curcio can be seen cooking on the side of the road in Alabaster as he smokes the meat right outside of the establishment. However, this is not the only place to find him in Alabaster. Curcio is often in his food truck outside of Siluria Brewing Company or Cultivate Church at Celebrate Recovery, feeding people who are recovering. Sometimes, he is at Linn Park feeding the homeless. It’s these experiences Curcio said have helped him redefine what success truly means.

Kelly Williams had been a massage therapist for 15 years, but she had to get a hip replaced and was looking for less physically demanding work when she met Brother Paul two years ago. Her only child was headed off to college, so everything was transitioning for her. She intended to step outside of her comfort zone and connect with people. The ribs are by far the best I’ve tasted! The Ole No. 1 is a chicken or pork sandwich with two rib bones and two sides. A combo plate gives the options of two or three meats and two or four sides. Everything on the menu is delicious, so my best advice: Try it all!

A sixth-grade Leigh Ann Fleagle stood courtside with the rest of the cheerleaders as they cheered on the basketball team. Bill Fleagle, in seventh grade at the time, was one of the players on the team. That’s how they met. Though not in the same friend group, they attended the same church and knew of each other, growing up in Childersburg. His senior year of high school something changed when Bill asked Leigh Ann to go to the movies. They went on a double date to see “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom” and have been together ever since. After graduating high school, Bill headed to Samford University, and the following year, Leigh Ann began attending the University of Montevallo.

“We stayed together through all of that,” she said. They saw each other every weekend as they still attended the same church in Childersburg, but they also had time during the week to find their own interests. During that time, the pair became even closer friends, creating a solid foundation for their relationship for many years to come. “It was about my second year of college, Bill didn’t ask me to marry him or anything, we just knew and prayed about that this is what God had for us,” Leigh Ann said, while later adding, “There wasn’t any big, monumental event. We just grew in love over time.” The pair married in 1990, and in the following

years, adopted four children from Eastern Europe. The family lived in a few different houses in the Birmingham area and one in Idaho before landing in their current home. While their previous home was closer to work and offered a plethora of things to do around it, they wanted something simpler. “We realized a small town is what’s going to be best for our family,” Bill said. Looking at areas within an hour commute of his job, the Fleagles decided one made the most sense for them and moved to Columbiana in 2022, where they presently live with three of their children. While they love the small-town comfort of Columbiana, they desired a getaway place to decompress and spend time together, ideally near

water. They decided the beach was too far to use as often as they wanted and purchased a house on Lay Lake in 2025. The 20-minute drive from their main home offers the ease to visit weekly. Even if only for the day, the Fleagles enjoy the time to shut off and be with each other. “We still enjoy spending time together, and we wanted to find a place where we could do that, and the bonus was we got some great neighbors,” Bill said. Dining Area This beautifully decorated, wooden table sits against the wall opposite the kitchen, crafting an intimate dining area used primarily by Bill and Leigh Ann.

Living Room The living room is significantly the largest room in the house and has plenty of space for the entire family to hang out at one time. The tackle box and lures on the bookshelves belonged to Leigh Ann’s maternal grandfather, who served in the United States Army during World War II, and add a nice personal touch that decorate the lake house year round.

Twin Bedroom When their daughters spend the night, they sleep in this room, but it’s Leigh Ann’s favorite in the house. Leigh Ann’s mother painted the piece above the bed on the left, and their son, Joshua, painted the one on the right based on a photo Leigh Ann took. Their daughter, Elena, likes to do diamond art, and did this piece on the wall opposite the beds that is of the lake house.

Master Bedroom Like every other room in the house, the master bedroom showcases Leigh Ann’s subtle but thorough decorating style. While the room is decorated throughout and effectively comes together, nothing feels too forced.

Swing Porch The previous owners left these two hammocks, which have become Bill’s favorite spot to be. The Fleagles added two swings, and named this the swing porch. It has become a prime family spot when they’re all together. Even their dog, Millie, likes to swing!

Enclosed Porch Leigh Ann has always loved screened porches, so this is a favorite seating area of hers. Their daughter, Juliana, made the latch hook rug in the center of the space.

Kevin Morris didn’t grow up in Wilsonville dreaming of becoming the CEO of a credit union, but that’s exactly what happened. Morris became CEO of AmFirst, formerly America’s First Credit Union, in 2025 after being with the company for 13 years, and he’s currently preparing the company to celebrate its 90th anniversary of serving the public. Morris’ journey to his position began being exposed to a “Mayberry mindset” growing up in Shelby County. He grew up in Wilsonville, attended and graduated from Shelby County High School and went away saying he never wanted to come back. However, going off to college made him realize how important the idea of community truly is and how special his hometown was. After settling down and having a family, Morris went to work for a large company that caused him to travel frequently all over the country. While he appreciated the work he was doing, there was something missing. “I looked around and thought, ‘You know, I’ve made a lot of money for a lot of people. I do a lot of

good things all across the country, but what am I doing? I can’t engage in my church because I’m flying out on Sundays. I’m not on committees; I don’t go to the local events,’” he said. Morris went to work for the local community bank and started reestablishing local relationships. He started being active in the local chamber and civic groups, running the local baseball league and finding other ways he could be helpful to the community both personally and professionally. Over time, the bank he worked for was preparing to sell to a larger commercial bank, and Morris said he was scared he wouldn’t be able to continue to help people on a closer, local level anymore. Then he heard about AmFirst, and after doing some

research, he realized their vision matched his. “I realized that their vision statement is to improve the lives of our members and the communities we serve,” he said. “Well, you don’t have to have a physical branch in a community to serve that community.” He began to look around the communities he was in and noticed the name AmFirst in many places from baseball outfields to event programs. “You start to really realize they’re putting their money where their mouth is,” Morris said. “They’re doing the things they tell people they’re going to do. And I went, ‘That’s a place I’d love to work one day,’ and I began to look for ways to make that happen.” Over the years working with AmFirst, Morris has worked closely with countless people and organizations, and he said he has loved watching individual stories unfold with each account. “I tell people all the time my worst day here is still better than my best day elsewhere because I feel like I get to stay very community centric,” he said. “I get to worry about small towns, people that don’t have credit scores, people that are trying to start a small business and no one wants to hear about their dream. I get to hear about people who want to get in their first home. I get to watch that experience take place in front of me. I get to watch a single mother rebuild her life and need a vehicle, and she’s never had to get a loan before, and we help her get on a first-time-buyer car loan that gets her to that job, so she can take care of her family. And I get to be a big part of that.” Morris said at its heart, AmFirst is about philanthropy and giving back to communities. Organizations of all sizes, for-profit and nonprofit, are all part of the credit union’s philanthropic umbrella. “When I think about AmFirst as a whole, at our 50

heart, we’re still hometown,” Morris said. “At our heart, we’re still the same organization we were 90 years ago. We’re just simply a group of people who are trying to help the people we consider our neighbors, the people down the street, the people we interact with every day. I find that not only unique, but also amazing, that somehow, through a 90-year history of lots of things changing around us, we’ve never changed that heartfelt idea of what our real mission is every day.” Morris added that investing in people and the relationships he’s built with communities have been a fundamental success in his career. It’s one of the many positives of his work at AmFirst, a company he said he has loved working for because

Anders was diagnosed with a rare genetic condition that was affecting his immune health and significantly impacting his overall development. His doctors determined his best treatment option was a bone marrow transplant, and luckily Anders found his match and received his transplant. Now Anders is reaching new developmental milestones and is starting to get back to being a normal kid.

it allows him to feel like he’s made a difference in people’s lives. Morris said the company has never laid an employee off in its 90-year run, and that mentality comes from its core values of putting people first. “I think at the end of the day, we’re able to work in a place where we also get to live, and we get to be authentic to who we are,” he said. “We don’t expect our staff to come in here and be corporate America. We expect them to bring their own stories and their own culture and background and make that a part of who we are corporately because that’s how we speak to the masses.” Morris said to represent and lead a company that not only represents the values he grew up with, but also celebrating its 90th anniversary, is an honor that most people couldn’t understand. “It’s not name recognition that drives it,” he said. “It’s not having a branch on every corner. It’s not turning in record financials. And although those things do benefit us, it’s the heartfelt moment of going home and knowing you did a good job. It’s the humility of the hundreds of people that have given their life to make this company what it is today.” When asked if there was anything in particular about himself that he would want people to remember him for, Morris said simply, “It’s not about me.” “It’s about me trying to help 500 people feel the way about their job I get to feel about my job,” he

Hey Bébé Where Yat? One of my favorite places to eat in Shelby County is Hey Bébé Where Yat? If I’m there, I’m ordering the BBQ Bacon Mac N Cheese every single time. It’s the perfect comfort food with just the right amount of flavor. I’m also a huge fan of the Big Joe Baker potato, which is one of my favorite menu items anywhere in the county. No meal is complete without their homemade bread pudding. It’s the kind of place that keeps you coming back because the food is consistently great and always feels like a treat.

Finding Homes One of my favorite memories isn’t a single event. It’s helping people achieve homeownership right here in Shelby County. Seeing a first-time buyer get the keys to their very first home, especially after months or even years of working toward that goal, never gets old. The smiles, happy tears and excitement in those moments are memories I’ll carry with me forever.

Lay Lake There’s just something special about spending a day out on the water. Whether I’m kayaking, enjoying the scenery or simply taking in the peaceful atmosphere, it’s a great way to relax and recharge. Lay Lake offers beautiful views, plenty of space to explore and opportunities to enjoy nature at your own pace. Some of my favorite days are spent paddling along the shoreline and enjoying the quiet moments that you can only find on the water.

First Friday My favorite event is Calera’s First Friday celebration for the Fourth of July. I love how patriotic the evening feels and how it brings the entire community together. You’ll see families setting up lawn chairs, kids playing with friends, local businesses staying open and neighbors catching up. The fireworks are always a highlight, but what I enjoy most is seeing the community come together to celebrate and create memories.
