TThis will be my last issue as editor of Shelby Living. It has been my pleasure these past three years to curate your stories and share them with our communities. I’ve so enjoyed getting to meet so many of you, learn your names, your testimonies.
While I will still be writing for Shelby County Newsmedia, I am passing off the torch to my trusted friend and colleague—an icon in her own right—Michaela Bankston. An Alabaster resident, Michaela and I first became friends when I was hired here in late March 2022. Over the years, she has helped me find the scoop on all things Shelby County, written stories alongside me and even helped proof an issue or two.
Although I will miss this grand publication, I feel confident that Michaela will serve you all well.
As her fellow editor, I commend her, but as her friend, I’m just elated to have witnessed her come so far. She is a strong storyteller, and every one she writes further cements my belief that some talents are simply God given.
I remember my first day on the job. I recall staring at a blank Word document glaring back at me, my cursor blinking on the page. Talk about a day to have performance anxiety! At the time, I had recently graduated from Samford University and was a new mom, too. I had little-to-no job experience outside of doing social media work for a local art gallery. I was freshly postpartum and still getting used to crying spells, breastfeeding with low supply, hair loss and a variety of other “new-mom things.”

However, readers, there was one person who consistently remained a beacon of hope in my office. That person loves unconditionally, works tirelessly and is fervent in her faith, and funnily enough, while I am helping prepare her to take on this role, I am also thanking her for helping me through one of the toughest transitions in my own life.
That’s why I know she’ll do amazing things as editor. I now look forward to being a reader myself, cheering her on in this new chapter. In my last issue, I am proud to share 12 different love stories of Shelby County couples who have proven that no matter the trials, friendship will help one endure any challenge in life, and for some, that friendship may just blossom into something more.
All my love, Shelby County, Caroline & Robert Caroline and Robert’s first dance song was “Beyond” by Leon Bridges. They chose it because the lyrics describe falling for someone who might be “the one,” and they say that’s how they felt when they first met.

The Shelby County Arts Council’s annual Mardi Gras Gala returns to the Grande Hall at Old Mill Square.
BY LESLIE BELK

TThe moment one steps into the Mardi Gras Gala at the Shelby County Arts Council, the night seems to shimmer with celebration. Rich jewel-toned purples, greens and golds wash the room in a festive glow, echoing the unmistakable energy of New Orleans, Louisiana.
Elegant masks, cascading beads and vibrant décor hint at the lively evening ahead, while the hum of anticipation builds among guests gathering for a night that blends artistry, community and classic Mardi Gras spirit. A well-crafted meal from The Fish Market of Hoover adds a warm touch to the evening, offering guests a taste that complements the festive atmosphere.
This annual gala isn’t just a party—it’s a feast for the eyes, a celebration of creativity and a culinary treat, all in support of the transformative work of the arts council.
Returning on Saturday, Feb. 21, the 2026 Mardi Gras Gala will take place at the Grande Hall in Columbiana. Hosted by the Federated Women’s Clubs of Columbiana—the Culture Club, the Novella Club and the Vignette Club—this annual fundraiser brings together community members, local arts
supporters and arts council partners for an evening of dinner, entertainment and the opportunity to indulge in the spirit of giving.
With the theme, “Let the Good Times Roll,” the event aims to be both festive and purpose driven.
Festivities will begin at 5:30 p.m. with hors d’oeuvres and a silent auction. Guests will have the opportunity to browse and bid on a variety of auction items, ranging from local art to specialty packages and experiences.
This portion of the evening provides a chance to meet fellow supporters, connect with community leaders and learn more about the programs the gala helps fund.
Following the reception, guests will enjoy dinner catered by The Fish Market of Hoover, a longstanding, local favorite known for its delicious, fresh seafood with a New Orleans flair. The menu will offer a selection of dishes prepared specifically for the event, ensuring guests enjoy a high-quality dining experience.
Bruce Andrews, executive director of the Shelby County Arts Council, affirms the quality experience guests can anticipate at the gala.
“I am looking forward to playing at the Shelby County Arts Council Mardi Gras event with a band of amazing musicians who make me feel unworthy to be there.”
-Sean Dietrich
“Nancy Drakos, owner of The Fish Market of Hoover, always ensures our guests enjoy a true Mardi Gras experience—plates filled with the rich, soulful flavors you’d expect on a New Orleans celebration night,” he says. “We’re honored to have her continued support; the delicious gala meal she provides each year reflects her genuine commitment to the arts and to our mission.”
Serving as emcee for the evening will be writer, musician and storyteller Sean Dietrich, known to many as “Sean of the South.” His familiar voice and warm style will guide guests through the program, announcements and auction features.
Entertainment continues with live music from Sean of the South & Boeuf Gras, bringing what they describe as “the sound of New Orleans” to the Grande Hall.
“I am looking forward to playing at the Shelby County Arts Council Mardi Gras event with a band of amazing musicians who make me feel unworthy to

be there,” Dietrich said.
Their performance will offer a lively, celebratory element to the evening, giving guests the option to sit back and enjoy the music or head to the dance floor and participate more actively in the festivities. Whether guests come for the dancing or the atmosphere, the music is sure to be a highlight of the event.
In addition to dinner and live music, the gala will feature a live auction, allowing attendees to bid on select high-value items and experiences. This component has consistently been a significant contributor to the funds raised each year, and it provides a fun, spirited opportunity for guests to show their support.
Most importantly, the Mardi Gras Gala directly benefits the programs of the Shelby County Arts Council, a Columbiana-based nonprofit organization. Net proceeds from the event support several key initiatives, including “Writing Our Stories,” a

creative writing program for students; “Art Classes with The Arc of Shelby County,” a therapeutic art experience for adults with disabilities; and scholarship funding for arts council classes, camps and arts programs.
These programs play an essential role in expanding creative opportunities throughout Shelby County, serving participants of all ages and backgrounds.
The success of the gala is made possible through the efforts of the Federated Women’s Clubs, along with the Shelby County Arts Council’s volunteer coordinators, Molly Bee Bloetscher and Pam Wood.
“Their long-standing dedication has not only elevated this event year after year, but it has also played a crucial role in helping the Shelby County Arts Council expand arts education and outreach programs throughout our community,” Andrews said. “We simply can not thank them enough for all they do to support Shelby County Arts Council.”
With the combined efforts of local volunteers, supporters, artists and attendees, the gala aims to ensure that—true to its theme—the good times continue to roll for the arts in Shelby County.

Recommendations from Marissa

Library Director at the Parnell Memorial Library

By Emily Henry | Romance
Marissa Wilson started working at the Parnell Memorial Library in Montevallo, Alabama, as a part-time library assistant in November 2021. She frequented the library often as a homeschool mother, and eventually, the library asked her to work there. In October 2023, Marissa became a full-time librarian. Here, she recommends five of her favorite romance novels readers will swoon over.
Daphne is in the beginning of a heartbreaking break up, when her fiancé leaves her for his childhood best friend and leaves her stranded as well. She ends up on the doorstep of the ex of the woman who stole her fiancé, and together, they begin a fake-relationship plan to stir up jealousy, which slowly turns into genuine feelings. If you love fake-dating or a friends-to-lovers theme, this will be a great read and is simply a “funny story.”
By Christina Lauren | Romance
In this hilarious scenario, sworn enemies—Olive and Ethan—are forced to take over her sister’s honeymoon and pretend to be the newlyweds. They are constantly bickering but also have great, witty banter, which creates sparks that shift from true annoyance to attraction. With the setting in Hawaii, there are plenty of fun, beachy scenes and romantic mishaps. Olive and Ethan start to slowly show real vulnerability, revealing insecurities, family pressures and past hurts that gradually deepens their relationship.

By Mia Sosa | Romance
This book starts with a chaotic wedding-crashing incident, where Solange’s interference, even though it was well meaning, puts her in the path of lawyer Dean, which is a hilarious but messy dynamic. A few days later, they agree to pretend to be a couple, so Dean can secure a promotion. Sparks fly, and laughout-loud situations slowly turn into genuine emotions between the two. This book is not only a heartfelt rom-com, but it is also a journey of self-discovery.
By Meghan Quinn | Romance
“The Wedding Game” features crafty and optimistic Luna and a divorce lawyer, Alec, on a chaotic, weddingplanning reality TV show. The hilariously fun situations, including glitter and glue guns and snappy banter, spark a slow-burn romance that feels raw and real as they slowly begin to see each other’s hearts. When old family wounds come up and both characters have to confront how they feel about love and marriage, the story evolves into one about growth, healing and choosing to believe in love again.

By Meghan Quinn | Romance
This book starts out with a hilarious lie: Scottie tells her new job that she has a husband just to fit in, and somehow, she gets roped into a wild marriage camp, which sets the stage for outrageous laughs. Scottie and her (fake) husband Wilder have amazing, sharp and playful banter, but with their forced proximity, their situation shifts from a comedic charade to real attraction. This book starts out lighthearted, but it turns into something deeper as both Scottie and Wilder confront past hurts and insecurities.

Creations Galore & Moore celebrates five years of business, thanking customers for their love and support.

NNedra Moore was no more than 10 when she first learned about the relationship between having faith and baking in her grandmother’s kitchen, learning to trust the process, working with what life gives you along the way. Years later, she maintains this same mindset, and it has guided her through each season of life.
As a young girl, Moore adored baking in the kitchen with her inspiration, her grandmother, and it was she who first instilled this yearning to create in Moore’s own heart.
Fast forward two decades, and Moore found herself baking a cake for her sister-in-law’s baby shower. Moore’s sister-in-law asked if she could share her contact information with friends, but Moore declined initially, saying baking was just a hobby, not her profession.

Not long after did she and her husband learn they were expecting. Absolutely ecstatic, she prepared every day for her baby girl’s arrival, eager to meet her for the first time. On the day of her daughter’s birth, unfortunately, her daughter suffered from a birthing injury, resulting in the loss of use of her right arm.
What should have been a season of elation soon turned somber, as Moore’s family navigated numerous surgeries and therapy sessions with their infant daughter.
“One of the biggest challenges has been just keeping the faith during hard seasons,” she said, later adding, “cakes were really an outlet for me; they gave me something to put my hands to to keep my mind in a positive place.”
Over time, her sister-in-law convinced her to start capitalizing on her talent, and Moore began taking

small orders for cakes, cupcakes and cookies—she found that there really wasn’t anything she couldn’t create.
One of her toughest challenges came in the form of a three-foot-tall Spider-Man cake. She created a lifesize version of the superhero in his traditional stance—crouching down, arm extended to shoot webs—and to this day, her client’s reaction remains her favorite out of anyone for whom she has created custom orders.
“When I was learning to cook, my grandmother always said to make sure that your food looks good,” Moore said. “I have truly lived by that motto. Not only do I want things to taste good, but I want them to look good.”
That young tot’s reaction was proof to Moore that she possessed the talent to excel in this industry. The only thing stopping her was the risk of stepping out on her own.
Then while attending a therapy appointment with her daughter, a relative of another child in therapy approached Moore.

“She said, ‘I just feel like I need to tell you that if you want to come home and be with your child, that He (God) will honor that,’” Moore said.
A bit shocked, Moore felt both encouraged and a little dismayed—she had hardly ever spoken to the woman before. Even so, the Lord used her to set Moore down her current path, one that led to her accomplishing her wildest dreams.
“I stepped out on faith, and I came home,” she said, smiling.
She became a registered home baker in the city of Alabaster and grew her business for six years before expanding into a brick and mortar.
“There were seasons where I had to get real creative just to make things stretch (still do),” she said. “It wasn’t just about surviving; it was about staying visible, staying hopeful and trusting that the work would eventually speak for itself.”
Sure enough, it did.
The year was 2019. The downtown business district in Calera was in its early stages, but it was growing.
After getting in touch with Calera Main Street’s then-executive director, Jackie Batson, and local businessman, Dennis Torrealba, Moore said they helped her establish her new business in a cozy, niche spot off of U.S. 31 in December 2019.

The following February, just weeks before the world seemed to have suddenly stopped spinning, Moore had to pump the brakes on renovations when the COVID-19 pandemic hit. She said she remembers when the roof was taken off, so the building could be expanded by 22 feet.
At the time, she looked up to the sky through that gaping hole for days, asking God if she had made a mistake.
“Building a business from scratch is already tough, but trying to grow it through a pandemic when every single dollar counted and half the time folks didn’t even know we existed, that stretched me in ways I never imagined,” she said.
Nonetheless, she took a page out of her grandmother’s book: pray, bake and pray some more.
“There were days I showed up to the bakery tired, overwhelmed and unsure if we’d make it through the month, but I kept showing up,” she said. “I kept baking. I kept praying. I kept creating space for
others, even when I wasn’t sure I had anything left to give, and that’s what kept the doors open.”
Finally, on Oct. 2, 2020, Creations Galore & Moore opened its doors to the community for the first time, and just as the Lord helped Moore open her business, so He also did with bringing in the customers.
Already on opening day, Moore was juggling two different wedding cake orders, plus an order for 100 cookies for Calera High School. One of the cakes, the groom’s cake, resembled a Rolex in its traditional box, and it was huge.
The other, the bride’s cake, was five tiers tall, weighed more than 50 pounds and featured 80 handmade sugar flowers that Moore and her team constructed petal by petal.
Since her business’ inception, Moore has created hundreds of cakes—one even weighing more than 200 pounds. Some of her most elaborate designs have included two different Louis Vuitton purse cakes and an “Air Jordan” sneaker cake.
Now celebrating its fifth anniversary, Creations Galore & Moore has since earned a reputation for its cupcakes and cookies as well, with the bakery producing nearly thousands a month, sometimes in a single week.
“My purpose was really born out of pain...I also learned that healing doesn’t always come from a quiet moment. It can come through rolling dough, decorating cookies or laughing with a customer at the counter.”
-Nedra Moore

Not only does the bakery create custom cakes for weddings and events, but it also sells custom cake toppers, cupcakes, cupcake bouquets and sugar cookies. Special treats include any of the menu’s chocolate-covered Oreos, doughnuts, pretzels and Rice Krispy treats, along with cake pops, “cakesicles,” dessert shooters, macarons, “cake in the jar,” cocoa bombs, cinnamon rolls, brownies and pound cake, too.
Many of her signature recipes, Moore said, are inspired by her grandmother’s kitchen, where her love for baking first began. Moore has since become

renowned for her handmade gum paste and fondant flowers—they’re both edible and elegant.
The best part, however, is all of the bakery’s cakes are made from scratch using locally sourced, farmfresh ingredients, and all of the icings are made in house as well. Moore even incorporated a bakery garden outside of the bakery, where she now grows her own basil, parsley, oregano, strawberries, cherry tomatoes, lettuce and green onions.
In recent years, Moore has also begun catering events, having received her own mobile ice cream stand that she uses at wedding receptions, community gatherings and more.
Looking back over her career, Moore said she never could have imagined what success she and her team would reap, and she said she has the Lord and her customers to thank.
“My purpose was really born out of pain,” she said, later adding, “through all of it, I learned that I’m more resilient than I thought. I also learned that healing doesn’t always come from a quiet moment. It can come through rolling dough, decorating cookies or laughing with a customer at the counter. Our bakery became more than a business; it truly became a safe space. That’s where my heart is now, creating a place that feels like a soft landing for people: a place full of

FIVE QUESTIONS FOR
PHOTO CONTRIBUTED

Top It Off Frozen Yogurt & Smoothies was founded by husband-and-wife duo Jay and Shetal Modi, who after moving to Helena in 1998 realized that dessert options were limited for those with dairy allergies. Inspired by their children’s love for ice cream, Jay and Shetal decided to hone in on their passion and create a family-friendly frozen yogurt and smoothie cafe in 2011. Since its inception, the menu has grown to include numerous different combinations and has attracted customers from all over the Southeast. Here, Shetal describes her family’s entrepreneurial journey and Top It Off’s must-try menu items.
What is the origin story of Top It Off Frozen Yogurt & Smoothies?
Top It Off was inspired by our children and their love for ice cream. We wanted something different from a traditional ice cream shop. We wanted a place where families can come and create their own dessert combinations and enjoy them in a healthier way. That is the reason why I choose frozen yogurt. When it comes to our frozen yogurt, it is crafted with the finest of quality ingredients such as milk, fruits and beneficial live-and-active cultures. Some of the flavors are dye or dairy free. In 2011, our vision became reality, and Top It Off Frozen Yogurt & Smoothies was born—a family-owned space for fun, creativity and sweet memories. Our slogan quickly became, “Life is too short to not enjoy the sweet stuff!” Today, we make 100 percent fruit smoothies, and over the years, we’ve added fresh, made-to-order acai bowls to our menu. When it comes to creativity, my husband played an important role in transforming our vision into a colorful and happy place. I took it from there and
ran the establishment and have grown it to where it is now.
What is your favorite menu item?
My favorite thing about our menu is that you can make it entirely your own. Whether you are craving a strawberry cheesecake, brownie sundae with caramel drizzle or a granola parfait, we help bring your dessert vision to life. We have more than 14 different frozen yogurts and more than 50 different toppings to create endless combinations.
For newcomers, what do you think they should order first?
For newcomers, I always ask, “What are you craving?” With our endless combinations, I always help our patrons to create their ultimate dessert. Our frozen yogurt tastes just like cream—its soft serve gives off a velvety texture and includes probiotics that are great for gut health. I encourage them to explore flavors, try fun toppings and build something that feels uniquely theirs.
What menu items are great pick-meups to order this winter?
On a chilly winter day, I love creating something cozy like a brownie sundae with hot fudge or a rich, velvety cheesecake topped with different fruits. Even our colder desserts feel comforting when you build them with the right flavors.
What would you like to tell customers for their support of your business?
To our wonderful patrons, thank you for 14 years of incredible support! Your kindness, loyalty and love have meant everything to us. Seeing the joy on a child’s face when they walk in is what inspires us every day. We truly would not be here without this amazing community.
Top It Off Frozen Yogurt & Smoothies is located at 4746 Highway 52 in Helena. It is open every day from noon to 9 p.m. For more information or to view the menu, follow the business on Facebook (Top It Off Yogurt and Smoothies).

A GUIDE TO ALL THINGS WHITE, BRIGHT & BEAUTIFUL

The Southern Planner, one of the Southeast’s premier wedding planning and design cohorts, offers their tips and tricks for throwing the perfect “garden party-themed” event.
BY SHELBY KNIGHT
PHOTOS BY EMILY GREEN CREATIVE
A garden-party celebration offers a quiet kind of luxury—an atmosphere that feels romantic, effortless and timeless. Rooted in the charm of elegant outdoor gatherings from generations past, today’s garden-party aesthetic blends soft refinement with modern whimsy. More and more brides are gravitating toward this style for the way it elevates a wedding day without feeling overly formal: gentle color palettes, heirloom-inspired details and naturally beautiful venues create an experience that is both elevated and inviting. As this look continues to rise in popularity, the question becomes how to execute it well. Here are the key elements we recommend when creating a true garden-party moment.

Florals are the heartbeat of the style. Choose blooms that feel freshly gathered—roses, hydrangeas, sweet peas and other soft, airy textures. Pastels or muted tones maintain that romantic, garden-grown feel and bring a sense of natural abundance to the day.

Attire should echo the garden’s beauty. Gowns with floral appliqué, embroidered textures, soft movement or whimsical accessories like gloves or capes complement the setting and enhance the romance.

Tablescapes allow the theme to fully bloom. Traditional china, layered linens, delicate glassware, petite floral clusters, patterned napkins and handwritten place cards add depth and charm. These details anchor the look and invite guests to linger.

At The Southern Planner, we’re seeing more and more brides gravitate toward the gardenparty aesthetic. It’s a style that feels elevated yet approachable. Matching invitations and paper goods to the theme helps set the tone from the very beginning, while tea foods, light bites and signature beverages continue the experience throughout the day. Thoughtful touches like coordinated décor, layered tablescapes and romantic attire ensure every element works together. When done intentionally, this style creates a day that feels cohesive, elegant and unforgettable—exactly the kind of celebration our clients dream of.

Whether as a thoughtful groomsman’s gift or as a treat for guests at a wedding reception, cigars elevate any occasion, bonding people together, slowing down time and transforming single moments into lasting memories. Terry Wester, co-owner of Trussville Cigar Co., believes these shared mementos represent a bride and groom’s gratitude for those closest in their lives. Here, he discusses four different types of popular cigars and what to pair with them for any celebratory event.
BY ANNA GRACE BREEDLOVE
KELSEA SCHAFER

Grown in abundance of natural light, Sun Grown cigars’ flavor profiles are richer and zestier than their shadegrown competitors. Smoking a C.L.E. 40th Anniversary Robusto, for example, one will taste a combination of nuts, cedar and touches of honey and graham crackers.
PAIRS WELL WITH:
Rum, bourbon and cognac
Slow-roasted meats
TERRY’S RECOMMENDATIONS:
Perdomo 10th Anniversary
Arturo Fuente Chateau Fuente
2. Connecticut
Famed for their golden wrappers, Connecticut cigars deliver mellow, creamy notes and are ideal for those new to cigar smoking. A classic, the Perdomo 10th Anniversary Champagne, is a nice, low-key smoke, making it a neat choice for group settings with diverse crowds.
PAIRS WELL WITH:
White wine, cappuccinos and lattes
Charcuterie and crème brûlée
TERRY’S RECOMMENDATIONS:
C.L.E. Connecticut 6x60 Perdomo 10th Anniversary Champagne
3. Maduro
A direct contrast to the Connecticut, the Maduro cigar is defined by its toasted, aged leaves and longer, fuller body. First-time triers are often surprised by these cigars’ tastes of dark chocolate, cocoa, molasses and baking spices—smoother, richer flavors that aren’t as harsh as one might expect given its presentation.
PAIRS WELL WITH:
Merlot, espressos and Single-Malt Scotch Smoked meats, aged cheddar and toffee
TERRY’S RECOMMENDATIONS:
Oliva V Double Robusto
Kristoff Veinte Perfecto
One of Terry’s favorite brands, the Arturo Fuente Rare Pink’s line fundraises for breast cancer research. This elegant smoke features an Ecuadorian wrapper and a Dominican-grown filler for a well-rounded profile, giving off hints of fruit and floral undertones.
PAIRS WELL WITH:
Bourbon and aged rum
Dark chocolate and nuts
TERRY’S RECOMMENDATIONS:
Queen of Hearts

BY MYKOLA & OLENA VYSHYVANYUK

A poetic blend of sculptural silhouettes, refined textures and timeless couture craftsmanship, NiEl Bridal Atelier’s handmade collections embody purity, elegance and modern femininity—like an orchid in full bloom. Here, husband-and-wife duo Mykola and Olena Vyshyvanyuk discuss wedding dress silhouettes and how to choose one’s dream gown.

DRESS NAME: Orchid Royale
STYLE: Full Ball Gown · Dropped Waistline · Sweetheart Neckline
A study in sculptural elegance, Orchid Royale is a luminous silk satin ball gown that infuses modern couture energy into a timeless bridal silhouette. The bodice features architectural, orchid-inspired construction with sharp, folded angles that frame the sweetheart neckline in subtle, sophisticated drama. The dropped waistline transitions into a voluminous skirt that flows in rich, liquid folds— capturing the light with every movement and creating an effortless sense of luxury.
Timeless, elegant and majestically refined, ball gowns are perfect for brides who seek elevated grandeur and unforgettable presence.

DRESS NAME: Orchid Petal
STYLE: Column · Deep V-Neckline · Embroidered Bodice
Orchid Petal is a refined fusion of softness and structure, created for the bride who embraces modern elegance shaped through couture craftsmanship. The gown features a beautifully embroidered bodice with a deep V-neckline, delicately framed by floral lace that adds dimension, femininity and a quiet radiance to the upper silhouette. Subtle beaded accents trace the waistline, offering a gentle shimmer that defines and elongates the figure with polished precision.
The skirt, tailored from luminous Mikado, extends into a sleek column silhouette that moves with effortless grace. Its clean, uninterrupted lines showcase minimalism at its finest, allowing the artistry of the bodice to take center stage. A detachable train elevates the look with dramatic fluidity, giving the bride the versatility to shift from ceremony grandeur to reception sophistication.
Orchid Petal is designed for the modern bride who cherishes the poetry of floral detail and the purity of a timeless silhouette.

DRESS NAME: Orchid Sculpture STYLE: A-Line with Slit · Regular Waistline · Straight Neckline
Orchid Sculpture is a celebration of modern minimalism elevated by sculptural, couture artistry. Crafted from luminous silk Mikado, this gown is designed for the bride who commands attention with quiet confidence and effortless grace.
The strapless bodice showcases a clean, architectural straight neckline—sleek, structured and impeccably contoured to the form. At the waist, an oversized couture bow becomes the gown’s defining statement piece. Expertly folded and voluminous, it blooms like a satin sculpture, adding dramatic dimension while preserving the gown’s pure, refined silhouette.
The A-line skirt, tailored from luxurious silk Mikado, flows with soft, understated movement. A modern slit introduces subtle allure, while the fabric’s gentle sheen catches the light beautifully, creating the impression of floating softness and contemporary radiance.
A-line silhouettes are timeless—perfect for the classic bride.

DRESS NAME: Orchid Blossom
STYLE: Mermaid · Straight Neckline · Lace Bolero
Orchid Blossom is a breathtaking, twopiece bridal ensemble that blends modern sophistication with delicate couture artistry. The look begins with an exquisitely crafted lace bolero, designed off-the-shoulder for a soft, romantic frame around the neckline and décolletage. Each appliqué is handplaced, creating a dimensional garden of 3D rosettes that bloom across the bodice. The intricate texture brings depth, movement and a sculptural floral elegance reminiscent of atelier couture.
Beneath the lace layer, a sleek, straightneckline corset offers clean architectural structure and a refined contemporary silhouette. The balance between the soft, blooming lace and the minimalist corsetry creates a striking interplay of romance and modernity.
The ensemble transitions into a sculpted crepe mermaid skirt that hugs the figure with precision, elongating the bride’s silhouette and enhancing her natural curves. Its smooth, uninterrupted lines offer a luxurious contrast to the intricate texture above, while the gentle flare at the hem adds movement and understated drama.
Mermaid silhouettes create a modern, romantic statement and are designed for the bride who cherishes fine craftsmanship, loves artistic detail and seeks a gown that embodies both softness and strength.

HOW DID YOU TWO MEET?
We met during our time at Troy University. Dylan asked a mutual friend for my number. He asked me on a date three different times, but each time I was busy! He asked me one more time and told his friends that if it didn’t work, he was giving up. Luckily, I was able to go, and we were attached at the hip after that!
HOW DID YOU KNOW YOUR SPOUSE WAS THE ONE?
Early on, I knew that our relationship was something very special. Being together felt like being with a lifelong friend. We were always laughing and having fun, even during the mundane things. I realized that I couldn’t imagine my life without him, and it has been filled with so much joy since!
HOW DID HE PROPOSE?
Dylan and I spent a lot of time together at Pike County Lake in Troy. It became one of our favorite spots to picnic and spend quality time together. A few weeks before I graduated, Dylan brought me to the lake after church and asked me to marry him! He arranged a beautiful display of flowers, pictures and champagne. Then, he planned a surprise party with all our friends and family. It was so special and I will cherish the memory forever!
WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST DANCE SONG, AND HOW DID YOU CHOOSE IT?
Our first dance song was “It Must Be Love” by Alan Jackson. We both love old country and wanted a fun, upbeat song that felt like us. Dancing together to Alan Jackson was one of my favorite parts of the night!

As cliché as it sounds, as soon as I saw him for the first time, I just knew he was the one.
HOW DID HE PROPOSE?
We took a trip to the mountains with all of our friends. He proposed on the second night we were there after we had just finished doing an escape room. I had zero idea he was going to propose and was completely blown away!
WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST DANCE SONG, AND HOW DID YOU CHOOSE IT?

HOW DID YOU TWO MEET?
Rob’s and my senior year of high school, we were put in a “Bama Bound” group chat. Through that group chat, we became very close friends. We ended up having a class at the University of Alabama together at 8 a.m. that we walked to together. Rob then asked me on our first official date for Valentine’s Day in 2019.
HOW DID YOU KNOW YOUR SPOUSE WAS THE ONE?
During our freshman year at Alabama, my friend and I planned to drive to Texas for spring break to see Rob. When the COVID-19 pandemic happened, my friend decided to stay back. I was disappointed that I wasn’t going to be able to spend spring break with Rob and his family, so instead, he came to visit me. At the time, my family was even going through a full kitchen remodel. I knew I loved Rob then because he was so quick to change his plans to not only spend time with me, but also to spend time with my family.
HOW DID HE PROPOSE?
It was the most beautiful day in February. My mother-in-law and sister-in-law asked me to go to lunch, but little did I know they were taking me to the Birmingham Botanical Gardens, where Rob was there waiting for me. He took me to the most beautiful pavilion and got down on one knee and proposed. Afterwards, he planned the best engagement party with both of our families and all of our friends.
WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST DANCE SONG, AND HOW DID YOU CHOOSE IT?
Our first dance song was “Beyond” by Leon Bridges. We chose “Beyond” because the lyrics describe falling for someone who might just be the one, and that’s exactly how we felt when we met. Dancing to it felt like the perfect way to start our marriage.

HOW DID YOU TWO MEET?
We went to the same high school but never ran in the same circle. In college, he was best friends with my best friend’s brother, so we started hanging around each other more and more. I always knew he was a person I truly enjoyed being around and that always made me laugh. A few years out of college, I had gotten out of a long-term relationship, and Jakob asked me out on a date a few months later. We have been inseparable ever since!
HOW DID YOU KNOW YOUR SPOUSE WAS THE ONE?
I had never felt so stable with someone before. He’s extremely levelheaded and always knows how to calm me down whenever I’m feeling overwhelmed or anxious. He always supports me in everything I do and has never put me down.
HOW DID HE PROPOSE?
We went to Greece with his family last summer. On the very last day of the trip, we were walking around Santorini and went to a spot with the most beautiful view of the island and of the ocean. I turned around, and he was on one knee!
WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST DANCE SONG, AND HOW DID YOU CHOOSE IT?

HOW DID YOU TWO MEET?
Hayes and I met at Auburn University. We met one night through mutual friends at Alpha Gam’s semi-formal, Swampwater. My birthday was the next day, so he got my number and texted me to wish me happy birthday and ask me to the next Fiji event. We hit it off, and he called me right after to ask me to dinner. The rest is history!
HOW DID YOU KNOW YOUR SPOUSE WAS THE ONE?
I had always been taught to watch how a man cared for his own family and friends when evaluating his character. I’ve never met someone who is more prayerful for, intentional with and loyal to his family and friends than Hayes. He cares for people so deeply, and as he began to do that for me, I knew he was a keeper.
HOW DID HE PROPOSE?
Hayes proposed after my first week of graduate school. He told me that he wanted to take me to SpringHouse, my favorite restaurant, to celebrate because we were planning to spend the weekend with my parents at their house on Lake Martin. When we got to the restaurant, the host led us down some stairs, through the WellHouse and out to the little garden just outside. Hayes proposed there, and it was perfect! Both of our families joined us right after for a champagne toast and a private dinner.
WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST DANCE SONG, AND HOW DID YOU CHOOSE IT?
We chose “Stand By Me.” Our band played it live, and it was such a fun moment. Hayes kept our honeymoon a surprise and didn’t tell me until during our first dance, so we would have something to focus on other than everyone staring at us while we danced. That made it so exciting!

HOW DID YOU TWO MEET?
We knew each other through work and connected through LinkedIn. We decided to meet for coffee— our first meeting ended up being three hours of talking about life instead of work. He then asked me out.
HOW DID YOU KNOW YOUR SPOUSE WAS THE ONE?
After about a week of talking to each other, I realized our beliefs, standards and vision for our lives aligned in all the best ways, and I just knew he was the right one.
HOW DID HE PROPOSE?
He surprised me after church by taking me to a lake, and he proposed to me there. I was so surprised by it! I had no idea. He also surprised me by getting my whole family and best friends together for an engagement party right afterwards.

HOW DID YOU TWO MEET?
Miller and I met during our sophomore year of college at a Christmas party at Ole Miss. However, the COVID-19 pandemic occurred the following spring, so we were sent home. We reconnected in the fall of our junior year and have been inseparable ever since.
HOW DID YOU KNOW YOUR SPOUSE WAS THE ONE?
I knew Miller was going to be someone special in my life from day one, but I knew he was “the one” when he came on my extended family’s Fourth of July beach trip. We had only been dating for six months, but he fit in so effortlessly with everyone—it felt like he had always been part of the family.
HOW DID HE PROPOSE?
One weekend in February 2024, I was heading home to Birmingham for one of my best friend’s bridal showers, and Miller went to Oxford to catch up with some of his friends. I also had a lunch planned with my grandmother at The Club on Saturday. That day, as I walked up the steps of The Club to meet my grandmother, I heard someone call my name. I looked down, and there was Miller! I was completely shocked. He had driven to Oxford on Friday, then secretly made his way to Birmingham on Saturday morning—all to surprise me. Then, he proposed! He also planned an engagement party afterwards with our closest friends and family to celebrate.
WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST DANCE SONG, AND HOW DID YOU CHOOSE IT?
“Wondering Why” by the Red Clay Strays was our first dance song. We chose this song because it was one of our favorite songs to play and sing in the car together. From the first time we heard it together, it felt like our song.

HOW DID YOU TWO MEET?
Luke and I met at Clemson University. Our initial meeting was the first night of our junior year at the “Welcome Back” party. Luke got my number and took me on a date the next night. The rest is history!
HOW DID YOU KNOW YOUR SPOUSE WAS THE ONE?
I had an intuition early on that Luke would be my future husband! I came home after our first date at Mellow Mushroom, screaming to my then-college roommates, “If I don’t marry Luke, it will be the biggest mistake of my life!” The Lord made the decision so evident from the beginning that Luke and I were meant to be.
HOW DID HE PROPOSE?
Luke thoughtfully planned the proposal on his family’s farm in South Carolina, telling me we were attending his sister’s birthday dinner. Luke was able to get me to dress up with only a little bit of suspicion, too. The proposal was quaint and intimate at their 150-year-old barn. It was an emotional moment being at a spot that has meant so much to so many generations.
WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST DANCE SONG, AND HOW DID YOU CHOOSE IT?
“Signed, Sealed, Delivered” was our first dance song. We wanted to dance to something classic yet upbeat, and Stevie Wonder perfectly portrays the “just married” feeling in this timeless song.

HOW DID YOU TWO MEET?
I first met Ben during our sophomore year at Auburn University, when I was president of a student service organization. It was during the COVID-19 pandemic, and I interviewed him over Zoom for a coordinator position. After the call, I remember thinking, “Wow, I’d love to marry a guy like him someday.” We stayed acquaintances for the next three years until our first date party during our senior year.
HOW DID YOU KNOW YOUR SPOUSE WAS THE ONE?
Realizing Ben was “the one” didn’t happen all at once. Instead, it revealed itself little by little, starting with our first date at a restaurant on Auburn’s campus, where we stayed talking until it closed. We found shared joys in pickleball, long walks and spending time in each other’s cities. Over time, I just knew that he was the one I wanted to marry.
HOW DID HE PROPOSE?
After asking my parents for my hand, Ben planned a surprise proposal at Greystone Golf & Country Club. My friends convinced me we were just taking a sunset cruise before dinner, but Ben was waiting at the 14th hole. After I said yes, we rode up to the clubhouse in a golf cart with a “She Said Yes” banner and were greeted by family, friends and the song, “Sweet Caroline,” playing. It was truly perfect.
WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST DANCE SONG, AND HOW DID YOU CHOOSE IT?
Our first dance was to “At Last” by Etta James. We wanted something timeless to match the elegant feel of The Club. The song was special to my grandparents who were married for 63 years—my grandfather lived to be almost 105 years old. Although he couldn’t attend the wedding, dancing to their song was a way to honor him.

HOW DID YOU TWO MEET?
We met at the University of Montevallo through mutual friends; although, we were both dating other people at the time. Years later, after life had taken us in different directions, some of those same friends gently pushed us back together. The timing was right, and everything just clicked.
HOW DID YOU KNOW YOUR SPOUSE WAS THE ONE?
I couldn’t pick just one moment when I knew Jordan was “the one.” Before we were even dating, he helped me through a difficult situation, showing a kind heart and a willingness to support someone he barely knew. The first time he spent a weekend with my family, he fit in like he’d always been a part of it. He didn’t just blend in; he belonged. In every unexpected moment since, he stays calm and steady, weathering storms and carrying me through them.
HOW DID HE PROPOSE?
What was supposed to be a relaxing day at the lake got cancelled, so Jordan quickly rearranged our plans. He suggested a last-minute trip to Vulcan Park—on a 90-degree day, no less—and of course, the elevator was broken. We climbed to the top, which was completely empty. We walked around, taking in every angle of Birmingham. We stopped, and while I was leaning over the railing, he said my name. I turned around, and there he was on one knee.
WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST DANCE SONG, AND HOW DID YOU CHOOSE IT?
“The Way I Love You” by Michal Leah was our first dance song. I played it for him one day a long time ago before we were even engaged. He said then that whenever we got married, that should be our first dance song because it “felt like love.”

HOW DID YOU TWO MEET?
We had always known of each other, but one summer, something just felt different. When John reached out, that simple message turned into our very first date and the start of something we never saw coming.
HOW DID YOU KNOW YOUR SPOUSE WAS THE ONE?
To me, there was not just one big moment; it was all the little things that added up. He had a peace about him that instantly made me feel safe and at home. I fell in love with how kind, genuine, thoughtful and calm he was. It just felt right. As our relationship grew, I knew I did not want to imagine my life without him.
HOW DID HE PROPOSE?
On Aug. 12, 2023, at Alys Beach, John proposed during golden hour, and it was nothing short of magical. We planned a beach trip for some much-needed rest and relaxation. Little did I know, John had something unforgettable planned. Not only was the proposal perfect, but he also surprised me by having both of our families there to celebrate. It was a moment filled with love, joy and everything I could have ever dreamed.
WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST DANCE SONG, AND HOW DID YOU CHOOSE IT?
“Like Red on a Rose” by Alan Jackson was our song. John and I have always shared a love for music across all genres, so picking our first dance song was really meaningful to us. My favorite flower has always been a red rose. On our very first date, John surprised me with a dozen of them, knowing they were my favorite. It was such a thoughtful gesture that stuck with me. When we heard “Like Red on a Rose,” it felt like everything came full circle: the lyrics, the feeling and that sweet memory.

HOW DID YOU TWO MEET?
Riley’s Perspective: We met while in college. Ethan was a sophomore at Birmingham-Southern College, and I was a freshman at Samford University.
HOW DID YOU KNOW YOUR SPOUSE WAS THE ONE?
Ethan’s Perspective: I had this feeling about Riley when we got into a pretty comedic incident with some friends. We managed to unfortunately sink a boat, which was not due to captain-error (the captain being myself). We were stranded for more than an hour. Finally, the United States Coast Guard rescued us, and from that day on, I realized she was someone who I would want to marry.
HOW DID HE PROPOSE?
Riley’s Perspective: Ethan proposed at the Sandestin Beach Club in Miramar Beach. One night we went out to dinner with friends, and they suggested we visit the beach to take sunset pictures after dinner. They left the restaurant a little beforehand to “pick up the camera,” when in reality, they were setting things up for the proposal.
WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST DANCE SONG, AND HOW DID YOU CHOOSE IT?
Riley’s Perspective: We danced to Elvis Presley’s rendition of “Can’t Help Falling in Love.” My late grandfather sang this song at my cousin Lauren’s wedding, which was the only one of his grandchildren’s weddings he got to attend before he passed. Since then, each grandchild has incorporated this song into their wedding in some way. We thought the perfect way to include it in our wedding would be as our first dance.

Mackinac Island: an idyllic, charming island town located in Lake Huron between Michigan’s upper and lower peninsulas. Since no motor vehicles are allowed on the island, the main forms of transportation are walking, bicycling or traveling via horse-drawn carriages. The island is full of Victorian architecture from when it became a popular destination in the 1800s and was named the number-one island in the continental United States by Travel + Leisure in 2022. Visit the island to be transported to a simple lifestyle of carriage rides and leisurely walks, paired with the natural blue water and rock formations.

The island can be reached by flying into either Pellston Regional Airport or Chippewa County International Airport. Take a shuttle from the airport to Mackinaw City, then a 20-minute ferry ride to the island. Once you arrive, there’s no shortage of unique, beautiful inns and bed-and-breakfasts at which to stay.
Chippewa Hotel Waterfront is located across the street from Historic Fort Mackinac. It is home to Pink Pony on Mackinac Island, an ever-iconic restaurant and bar famed for its pink interior and American fare. The hotel also boasts a large hot tub that visitors will adore. Mission Point Resort’s beautiful 18-acre property sits on the edge of the lake, providing views from the lawn and the guestroom windows. It’s located on the sunrise side of the island and is the only dog-friendly resort on the island.
Lake View Hotel dates back to 1858 and boasts a beautiful, Victorian exterior with fully renovated rooms inside. It’s located on Main Street, just steps away from the shops and restaurants that the downtown entertainment district has to offer. Lake View also provides an indoor pool and hot tub—the only one on the island.
First opening its doors in 1889 for summer tourists, Grand Hotel stands atop a hill with its grand porch overlooking the lawn. The hotel is home to 13 different restaurants and bars, and it maintains old-fashioned elegance by requiring elevated evening attire after 6:30 p.m. in the main areas.

Mackinac Island is known for its world-famous fudge, and the shops collectively make more than 10,000 pounds of fudge every day while in season. The island also features more than a dozen fudge shops, and tourists can take a stroll down Main Street, trying out the free samples. The original Mackinac Island fudge shop, The Original Murdick’s Fudge, notably makes its treats on a marble table in front of guests, inviting them in with the sweet smell of fresh fudge.
For dinner, go to The Carriage House in Hotel Iroquois for waterfront dining, a nightly pianist and classic American cuisine, or try Kingston Kitchen at the Village Inn for American classics with a Jamaican flair. Woods Restaurant also serves American and European foods with a slight twist: in a grand Tudor mansion. Adjacent is Bobby’s Bar, which has the oldest duckpin bowling alley in the U.S. Pink Pony comes highly recommended as a place to get a drink and a bite to eat.
To top off the evening, take a sunset stroll on the Main Street Boardwalk, and sample ice cream from Sadie’s Ice Cream Parlor, located at both Grand Hotel and on Main Street.

What is there not to do? Mackinac Island offers the perfect amount of vacation activities for both a relaxing and invigorating trip. For a romantic and relaxing honeymoon, curl up with a good book in the Adirondack chairs on the lawn overlooking the water at Mission Point Resort. This lawn is open for any visitors to the island.
Mission Point Resort and Grand Hotel also offer spa-andsalon options to enhance vacation relaxation. Tour the island in style by taking a horse-drawn carriage tour with Mackinac Island Carriage Tours. Spend a morning golfing on The Jewel, and take their horse-drawn carriage ride in between nines.
For the active couple, spend time together out on the water kayaking and snorkeling with Great Turtle Kayak Tours. This company also has an option for kayak cruises at both sunrise and sunset. Take a boat tour around the island with Ugly Anne Tour Company to learn more about the island and northern Michigan. Take in the views by walking, running or biking the island’s more than eightmile-perimeter on M-185, the carless highway. Along the way, you’ll pass by Arch Rock and countless other lookoffs and beach spots.
For a taste of history, visit Historic Fort Mackinac—the oldest building in Michigan—first built in 1715. It was used in the War of 1812 and has 14 restored buildings on the property that are open to the public. To visit other historic sites and buildings on the island, tickets can be purchased for less than $20 for adults.

The Island’s Most Scenic Spots and Best Photo Destinations
On a walkable island with so many natural rock formations and beach sunset opportunities, make sure to get out to these spots to appreciate the natural beauty of the island.
Arch Rock absolutely tops the list for must-see views. This iconic rock formation arches over the bright teal water and makes for a stunning backdrop. The view can be reached by climbing up 207 steps or by taking a carriage.
The East Bluff is made up of a cliff of absolutely incredible views overlooking the water.
Make sure to take the short trip from town to see Sugar Loaf, a 75-foot-tall stone tower in the middle of the forest.
Sunset Rock is about a 45-minute-long walk from downtown, but it is worth it to see one of the island’s best views of the sun setting over the water.
Even the easiest option is still a stunning way to watch the sunset. After dinner, take a stroll on the boardwalk not far from downtown and enjoy the company that gathers to watch the sun paint the sky orange over the water.

Fireworks & Parades
It’s a tie between American Village’s Fourth of July fireworks and Montevallo’s Christmas parade. The fireworks are honestly better than Birmingham’s, and the parade feels nostalgic and cinematic. We go every year! It’s become a tradition we love.
Birmingham Bulls Games
Going to watch the Birmingham Bulls play hockey is sentimental for us. My husband Alex grew up watching them in Birmingham, and I grew up with hockey in Wisconsin. Now that they’re in Pelham, it feels like our childhoods overlap, and we love taking our kids there to cheer on our local team.

Eat Local
Bertolone’s Classic
Italian Restaurant
Our family go-to is the chicken parmigiana and lasagna from Bertolone’s. It’s one of those meals that always hits the spot no matter the day.
AL Weddings

I love being part of such a defining day for people. Knowing the images we create will be passed down through their families means everything to me, and getting to do it all with my spouse is something I never take for granted. Not many people get to work with their best friend every day, but we do. It’s something we would never change. We also love that it gives us so much extra time during the week to be fully present as parents in school activities and sports. We know one day we will be drying our own tears as we watch them walk down the aisle, and we will feel such peace, knowing we were able to spend every moment watching them become incredible adults.
Oak Mountain State Park
We love Oak Mountain State Park. We take our camper, rent paddle boards and spend the day on the lake with the kids. The bird sanctuary and the hike to Peavine Falls are always a favorite. We’ve also done the trail hike around the lake, and it’s equally as beautiful without being so intensive. It’s one of our go-to ways to have a getaway close to home.
