HHave you ever noticed how slippery a slope falling in love can be, especially when you least expect it? Many of the brides featured in this issue would agree. Few could point to a single moment when they knew they’d found “the one.”
my husband, Justin, absolutely can.
It was March 11, 2020. We had only been dating for a few weeks at the time but had been close friends for nearly a year. While we were vacationing with friends, we watched the news and heard the name,
Foolishly, we celebrated “another two weeks of spring break” with a round of shots. In the weeks that followed, while the world seemed to be
I never understood why.
Our premarital counselor later described Justin as a golden retriever— radiantly positive with a no-quit, solution-oriented mindset. The guy never has a bad day. It’s both admirable and annoying as a black cat like myself.
Fast forward three years, and I watched through streams of tears as Justin recited his wedding vows to me: “Anna, I thought back to our Gulf Shores beach trip in 2020. A thick fog rolled over the beach, and the president came over the TV, announcing border closures because of a new virus called COVID-19. I knew then that even though the future was
For someone who then still couldn’t even pinpoint her “I knew, too,” moment, that was the most poignant knife to the heart.
Now only a handful of years into our marriage, here’s what I’ve learned: Love is rarely linear. It doesn’t matter when you learned you were in love; although, those moments do make sweet stories. What really matters is how your love for each other endures even the most uncertain of times.
I’m proud to say that Justin has remained my pillar of strength from that day forward, always eager to help me see the bright side of things. If
should be “Mr. Brightside.”
So, from us to you, I wish you nothing but a love that lasts, readers. I hope you love big and loud and recklessly, but most of all, I hope you never lose sight of how beautiful venturing into the unknown can be with the one of your dreams.
Love on, readers,

Katie, a Mountain Brook High School graduate herself, originally never thought twice about entrepreneurship. Instead, she graduated from the University of Alabama with her bachelor’s in for nearly a decade.
In 2006, Katie’s path diverged into that of her mother’s, when Betty realized her business was growing far past what only she could handle.

says learning how to write both traditional and contemporary invitations and create suites took time, but this practice is not to be rushed.
Over time, Katie learned how to guide customers through designing suites with elements of engraving
according to their desires. No matter how long appointments seemed to last, she found herself quite at home, helping brides during such an intimate process.
Appointments begin with lots of questions, as she will meet with brides to try and get to know each one individually. Then, step by step, from the feel and thickness of the cards to the design of the envelope liners, Katie will walk her customers through selecting every single aspect of their wedding invitations.
No matter if the appointment lasts one hour or a few, Katie remains patient, eager to witness her customer’s smile when she starts to see her vision come to fruition.

“Right now, I’m working on a custom crest for someone—a custom family crest,” she says. “It’s just neat to see that process because it’s like, ‘Oh, wow, I sent you that picture, and then here it is drawn out, and it’s just incredibly detailed!’”
When Katie was engaged, she says invitations were quite bland—brides had their choice of either ivory or white paper with the Brook font.

Wedding invitations have composed the bulk of Please Reply’s business from opening day; although, invitations will be exactly the same.
While the traditional look will always be a timeless option, she says invitations have been trending more contemporary in recent years. Some suites she has created recently now include not only the wedding invitation, but also the rehearsal dinner invitation and the “post-toast” and please reply cards all neatly layered together to set the tone for the entire wedding weekend.
than simply just the wedding invitation, and current trends are heading towards more intricate designs.
“You’re going to see a lot of color in 2026,” she says.
One of Katie’s favorite wedding invitation suites to date was a Ralph Lauren–inspired look with dark, muted tones and plaid patterns that carried into the wedding’s dinner menus and matchbooks.

Just as customer retention is high, so employee retention is, too.
“We all are trained how to do the ordering and we’re just a team here and we’re a family and everyone that works here is great,” she says. “I’m so lucky. Most of the people that have worked here have been here for over 10 years.”
In fact in 1926, Katie’s great-grandfather, Hugh Buchanan, started the Alabama Paper & Metalware Co. Inc., so while she never envisioned herself owning a business, Katie says maybe it was always in her blood.
“I guess we’ve always loved paper,” she says, chuckling. “I love that we’ve always loved paper. Honestly, I think a good set of stationery is such a lovely gift.”
She remembers her grandmother always giving her sets of stationery as Christmas presents or

Beyond wedding invitations, the store boasts a variety of neat gifts, including custom-made tea towels, koozies, Diva Wash, cheese straws and kitchen and stoneware accessories. Outside of wedding season—which lasts all year—Katie says graduation season each May is one of the store’s busiest times of year.
“Graduation is big,” she explains. “It takes a long time, but we get everyone’s initials that graduate from Mountain Brook. We have their initials in a book, and we keep up with it. Our son, every girl and guy, what they get from the store—we write it down there, so they won’t get like 12 luggage tags.”
These records have to be exact, and Katie and her team ensure it is, year after year. Parents, grandparents and loved ones of graduates will visit the store for graduation gift ideas and can tell what others may have already bought for their graduates, so this practice allows for the students to acquire some niche items—each one sentimental.

Olexa’s Catering, Café & Cakes serves up tasty dishes, custom cakes both near and far.

DDiane Olexa’s childhood was like a page pulled from one of Martha Stewart’s magazines with wedding cakes, decorations and bridal veils in the background of her memories. She grew up watching her mother meet with brides to plan out their cakes and cook delicious dishes to make their weddings extra special.
So, when Diane’s college roommate at Southeastern Bible College needed a wedding cake in 1993, she used her mother’s recipe, pans and the college’s kitchen to bake her friend a cake as a wedding gift. After tasting the cake she made for her friend, several classmates and the dean of the school encouraged Diane to pursue that as a career, and that’s just what she did.
The college allowed Diane to bake in the school’s kitchen after graduation for no rent. Diane decided to start a business designing and baking wedding cakes instead of pursuing her original plan of counseling, later joining creative forces with her mother in 1996 to

“It was just blessing after blessing,” Diane says. “The Lord truly opened doors for me.”
However, the opportunities didn’t end there. Her mother had always said she wanted to have a
that dream in 2004 when they opened Olexa’s
Catering, Café & Cakes in Mountain Brook Village in the former Rue de Provence restaurant space. Diane’s father also helped with getting the café ready to open, so it was a true labor of family love, she says.
French tiles, lamp posts and walls resembling building facades add to the café’s European-inspired small menu featuring a few of her mother’s soup, salad and sandwich recipes, and they slowly added more dishes through the years.
Now, the café’s menu includes meals like savory crepes, quiche, more than 10 salads, paninis, sandwiches, desserts and more—all her mother’s recipes—and of course, many guests enjoy a sweet treat after their meal.
“Most café goers order a slice of warm buttercream cake after enjoying a yummy lunch at the café,” Diane says.

Though she’s baked and decorated countless wedding cakes, each one is as unique as the couple for which they’re designed. From creating confetti cakes to strawberry cakes with pink sprinkles inside and glitter on the outside, Diane says many brides are choosing other options besides the traditional vanilla cake for their big days.

Over the years, their cakes have been enjoyed by people both near and far—whether that’s at a local wedding or one hundreds of miles away.
“It’s such a compliment when someone calls and says their daughter is getting married in France, and she has to have an Olexa’s cake,” Diane says. “We had another girl who was getting married in the Midwest who had to have an Olexa’s wedding cake,

She also had a friend text her while in the Cayman Islands saying that the only thing that could make the vacation more perfect would be an Olexa’s cake

BEFORE DESSERT
Olexa’s Catering, Café and Cakes might be known for its custom cakes, but there’s much more for guests to enjoy at this charming eatery.
One of owner Diane Olexa’s personal favorite menu items is the walnut and goat cheese salad, which includes olive tapenade, basil pesto, Roma tomato, caramelized walnuts and their house made balsamic vinaigrette dressing.
Some of their other popular menu items include crepes, tomato basil bisque, white chicken chili and quiche—like their spinach and tomato and Lorraine. Guests can also enjoy a sweet baked treat like morning glory mini
chocolate bread pudding with butter rum sauce
and real whipped cream is another favorite of many café visitors.
One of Olexa’s newest menu items is their bonbon boxes, which includes balls of cake and icing rolled together and hand dipped in chocolate. These beautifully packaged bitesize treats make for the perfect gift for bridesmaid luncheons, holidays, teacher appreciation or to enjoy at home.
cakes in hospitals to provide some comfort to patients and their families.
Olexa’s is also a great spot for special occasions. They host private parties like bridal luncheons, rehearsal dinners, birthday parties, book clubs and baby showers. Their mimosas and Pretty in Pink
drinks are especially popular for bridesmaid luncheons.
With more than 30 years of experience, Diane knows the right ingredients to cook up the perfect event, and a lot of that is thanks to what she learned from her mother. Even though Diane’s mother passed away in 2023, her mother’s legacy continues to touch so many lives through the restaurant every day.
“They’re all my mother’s recipes,” Diane says. “She got to realize her dream. She’s left a true legacy.”
No matter where Diane and her delicious sweets travel to next, everything traces back to a mother’s love for nurturing people through food—and a daughter’s passion for making both big and small days special through all she creates.
Olexa’s Catering, Café and Cakes is located at 1838 Culver Road in Mountain Brook. The café is open Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., but

A Garden Party Affair
The Southern Planner, one of the Southeast’s premier wedding planning and design cohorts, offers their tips and tricks for throwing the perfect “garden party-themed” event.
BY SHELBY KNIGHT
PHOTOS BY EMILY GREEN CREATIVE
A garden-party celebration offers a quiet kind of luxury—an atmosphere that feels romantic, effortless and timeless. Rooted in the charm of elegant outdoor gatherings from generations past, today’s garden-party aesthetic
modern whimsy. More and more brides are gravitating toward this style for the way it elevates a wedding day without feeling overly formal: gentle color palettes, heirloom-inspired details and naturally beautiful venues create an experience that is both elevated and inviting. As this look continues to rise in popularity, the question becomes how to execute it well. Here are the key elements we recommend when creating a true garden-party moment.
Florals
Florals are the heartbeat of the style. Choose blooms that feel freshly gathered—roses, hydrangeas, sweet peas and other soft, airy textures. Pastels or muted tones maintain that romantic, garden-grown feel and bring a sense of natural abundance to the day.
Wedding Dresses & Attire
Attire should echo the garden’s beauty. Gowns with or whimsical accessories like gloves or capes complement the setting and enhance the romance.
Tablescapes
Tablescapes allow the theme to fully bloom. Traditional china, layered linens, delicate
clusters, patterned napkins and handwritten place cards add depth and charm. These details anchor the look and invite guests to linger.
BEHIND THE SCENES
Follow these vendors on Instagram for more garden party-themed inspiration:
At The Southern Planner, we’re seeing more and more brides gravitate toward the gardenparty aesthetic. It’s a style that feels elevated yet approachable. Matching invitations and paper goods to the theme helps set the tone from the very beginning, while tea foods, light bites and signature beverages continue the experience throughout the day. Thoughtful
element works together. When done intentionally, this style creates a day that feels cohesive, elegant and unforgettable—exactly the kind of celebration our clients dream of.
A PARTY FAVOR
Whether as a thoughtful groomsman’s gift or as a treat for guests at a wedding reception, cigars elevate any occasion, bonding people together, slowing down time and transforming single moments into lasting memories. Terry Wester, co-owner of Trussville Cigar Co., believes these shared mementos represent a bride and groom’s gratitude for those closest in their lives. Here, he discusses four different types of popular cigars and what to pair with them for any celebratory event.

HOW DID YOU TWO MEET?
Franklin, Tennessee. He was the company engineer, and I was on the marketing team. What started as a friendship eventually turned into something more. Colten
cozy dive bar in downtown Nashville, where his best friends were playing a gig. The rest is history!
HOW DID YOU KNOW YOUR SPOUSE WAS THE ONE?
I knew Colten was the one because he genuinely cared about me, always listened and never judged. He loves God, treasures simple joys—sunsets, slow mornings, meaningful conversations, dogs, comfort foods—and loves me so well. He was then, and still is, simply the best.
HOW DID HE PROPOSE?
Colten proposed at my family’s lake house on Lake Martin. He gathered all of our loved ones to make the trip down for Thanksgiving Day, and when I walked in for lunch, there he was— standing in the living room with a ring in hand. Surrounded by our family—32 people to be exact—he asked me to marry him in the house that has been my safe haven since childhood. It was truly magical!
WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST DANCE SONG, AND HOW DID YOU CHOOSE IT?
We chose “Beautiful Crazy” by song because it perfectly captures our relationship. Colten has always loved me for exactly who I am—even my little bit of crazy.

HOW DID YOU TWO MEET?
We met at a date party at the University of Alabama, thanks to a little help from Wilson’s mom, a former Chi O who had sent him a list of Chi O members to invite. My name happened to be at the top, and that simple invite led to a conversation where we immediately hit it off.
HOW DID YOU KNOW YOUR SPOUSE WAS THE ONE?
The way Wilson pursued me, paired with how closely our values aligned, made our relationship feel effortless and genuine. It didn’t take long for me to realize that he was the person I wanted by my side for life.
HOW DID HE PROPOSE?
I thought I was heading out on a double date with my roommate something completely different planned. When the Uber arrived at my apartment, my roommate revealed she wasn’t going, handed me a letter and insisted I get in the car. I quickly realized the driver wasn’t just taking me to dinner. The driver took me to the church Wilson and I had been attending, where he was waiting for me in the courtyard. I was completely surprised and overwhelmed with joy! To make the moment even more unforgettable, he had one of
York to capture it on camera and coordinated for all our closest friends and family to be there to celebrate with us afterwards. It was incredibly thoughtful and a moment I’ll treasure forever!
WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST DANCE SONG, AND HOW DID YOU CHOOSE IT?
We danced to “Come and Get Your Love” by Redbone because we wanted something fun and upbeat. It was full of laughter and energy, perfectly capturing all of the joy of the day.

Will is the kindest, most caring and thoughtful person I know. It didn’t take long before I realized I could see a lifetime of happiness with him.
HOW DID HE PROPOSE?
Will had been casually mentioning the Birmingham Botanical Gardens for weeks to throw me off. One Friday after work, he asked me to go before a nice dinner. I had a feeling he might propose, but I also talked myself out of it. It was packed because of prom, but Will insisted on seeing the turtles. Instead, he led me past the turtle pond to the bamboo forest where he proposed!

HOW DID YOU TWO MEET?
We were set up on a semi-blind date by a married couple we both knew. The wife was my close friend in PA school, and the husband was in residency with Ivan.
HOW DID YOU KNOW YOUR SPOUSE WAS THE ONE?
From the moment we met, there was something different, something special about us together. There was a comfortable excitement whenever we were together. It was as if we had known each other forever, but at the same time, he made me want to push myself to be the best version of myself. That feeling never faded.
HOW DID HE PROPOSE?
One Sunday after church while we were driving home, he asked if I wanted to walk around Jemison Park, which he knew is one of my favorite activities. I, of course, said yes. We walked along our usual route, and when we got to a bridge, there was a little bench tucked away that he picked out and led me to sit down. As we were approaching the bench, he started his proposal and dropped to one knee in front of the bench and the creek with the Wisteria growing all around. It was just us, and it was absolutely perfect.
WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST DANCE SONG, AND HOW DID YOU CHOOSE IT?
“Just You ‘n’ Me” by Chicago was
old souls, so a non-contemporary song was a given. The lyrics of it were just so perfect for us. Ivan even ended up incorporating them in his letter that he wrote for me to read before the ceremony. Plus, the song was upbeat, fun and playful, and it had the horns, which I love.

We met while both attending Mountain Brook High School. At the time, I was a junior and Austin was a senior. We were both on our school’s soccer teams, so our paths often crossed. As fate would have it, our randomly assigned parking spots ended up being right next to each other. The rest is history!

Austin proposed during a trip to Miramar Beach for his birthday. While I was busy planning what I thought was the perfect birthday weekend for him, he had a surprise of his own in mind. As we were getting ready to head to dinner, Austin proposed on the front porch at sunset. He then revealed that both of our families were also at the beach to celebrate!

HOW DID YOU TWO MEET?
We met in 2020 over the Fourth of July holiday while out celebrating on the boat at Percy Priest Lake in Nashville. We were both there with mutual friends, and we hit it off instantly. Our friends joke that we’ve been inseparable ever since!
HOW DID YOU KNOW YOUR SPOUSE WAS THE ONE?
I knew Will was “the one” after every time he made me laugh on a bad day because he is the most positive person I’ve ever met. Will leads us in our faith, grounding us in a life together centered around Christ. He’s the friend I need on a long day and the person with whom I want to go on every fun adventure. He continues to remind me that he’s “the one” every time he makes a quirky joke that only he can land, guaranteeing a laugh!
HOW DID HE PROPOSE?
Will proposed on Christmas Eve in 2023 on the back terrace steps of Mountain Brook Club, where we would celebrate our marriage a year later. He pulled off the surprise with the help of my sisters keeping his big secret! It was a wonderful way to celebrate our engagement with all of our family over the holidays.

HOW DID YOU TWO MEET?
Bo and I met through mutual friends in the ninth grade. We were so young that Bo’s dad actually had
dated all through high school and then spent four years together at Auburn University. I always say that since we dated through the majority of our formative years, we really got to grow up together.
HOW DID YOU KNOW YOUR SPOUSE WAS THE ONE?
Sharing six years of life together showed me that Bo was the one. Watching him grow and change made me realize that there’s no one else I’d rather have by my side. I knew I wanted to spend forever with him because I’m not only excited for who he is today, but also for every version of us we have yet to become. I’m so thankful we have each other to lean on through all the hills and valleys of life.
HOW DID HE PROPOSE?
In November 2024, Bo proposed to me on the dock of my family’s lake house. We celebrated with both of our parents at SpringHouse, which is where we ended up having the reception! The morning afterwards, we drove to Auburn where Bo surprised me with a tailgate to celebrate. It was so sweet to have all our friends and family there. The weekend was even more memorable because Auburn pulled off a win over Texas A&M, meaning we got to storm the engaged!

Mackinac Island: an idyllic, charming island town located in Lake Huron between Michigan’s upper and lower peninsulas. Since no motor vehicles are allowed on the island, the main forms of transportation are walking, bicycling or traveling via horse-drawn carriages. The island is full of Victorian architecture from when it became a popular destination in the 1800s and was named the number-one island in the continental United States by Travel + Leisure in 2022. Visit the island to be transported to a simple lifestyle of carriage rides and leisurely walks, paired with the natural blue water and rock formations.
HIT THE ROAD
where to stay
The island can be reached by flying into either Pellston Regional Airport or Chippewa County International Airport. Take a shuttle from the airport to Mackinaw City, then a 20-minute ferry ride to the island. Once you arrive, there’s no shortage of unique, beautiful inns and bed-and-breakfasts at which to stay.
Chippewa Hotel Waterfront is located across the street from Historic Fort Mackinac. It is home to Pink Pony on Mackinac Island, an ever-iconic restaurant and bar famed for its pink interior and American fare. The hotel also boasts a large hot tub that visitors will adore. Mission Point Resort’s beautiful 18-acre property sits on the edge of the lake, providing views from the lawn and the guestroom windows. It’s located on the sunrise side of the island and is the only dog-friendly resort on the island.
Lake View Hotel dates back to 1858 and boasts a beautiful, Victorian exterior with fully renovated rooms inside. It’s located on Main Street, just steps away from the shops and restaurants that the downtown entertainment district has to offer. Lake View also provides an indoor pool and hot tub—the only one on the island.
First opening its doors in 1889 for summer tourists, Grand Hotel stands atop a hill with its grand porch overlooking the lawn. The hotel is home to 13 different restaurants and bars, and it maintains old-fashioned elegance by requiring elevated evening attire after 6:30 p.m. in the main areas.

WHERE TO EAT
Mackinac Island is known for its world-famous fudge, and the shops collectively make more than 10,000 pounds of fudge every day while in season. The island also features more than a dozen fudge shops, and tourists can take a stroll down Main Street, trying out the free samples. The original Mackinac Island fudge shop, The Original Murdick’s Fudge, notably makes its treats on a marble table in front of guests, inviting them in with the sweet smell of fresh fudge.
For dinner, go to The Carriage House in Hotel Iroquois for waterfront dining, a nightly pianist and classic American cuisine, or try Kingston Kitchen at the Village Inn Woods Restaurant also serves American and European foods with a slight twist: in a grand Tudor mansion. Adjacent is Bobby’s Bar, which has the oldest duckpin bowling alley in the U.S. Pink Pony comes highly recommended as a place to get a drink and a bite to eat.
To top off the evening, take a sunset stroll on the Main Street Boardwalk, and sample ice cream from Sadie’s Ice Cream Parlor, located at both Grand Hotel and on Main Street.

WHAT TO DO
What is there not to do? Mackinac Island offers the perfect amount of vacation activities for both a relaxing and invigorating trip. For a romantic and relaxing honeymoon, curl up with a good book in the Adirondack chairs on the lawn overlooking the water at Mission Point Resort. This lawn is open for any visitors to the island.
Mission Point Resort and Grand Hotel also offer spa-andsalon options to enhance vacation relaxation. Tour the island in style by taking a horse-drawn carriage tour with Mackinac Island Carriage Tours. on The Jewel, and take their horse-drawn carriage ride in between nines.
For the active couple, spend time together out on the water kayaking and snorkeling with Great Turtle Kayak Tours. This company also has an option for kayak cruises at both sunrise and sunset. Take a boat tour around the island with Ugly Anne Tour Company to learn more about the island and northern Michigan. Take in the views by walking, running or biking the island’s more than eightmile-perimeter on M-185, the carless highway. Along the way, you’ll pass by Arch Rock and countless other lookoffs and beach spots.
For a taste of history, visit Historic Fort Mackinac—the in the War of 1812 and has 14 restored buildings on the property that are open to the public. To visit other historic sites and buildings on the island, tickets can be purchased for less than $20 for adults.

Essential Outlooks
The Island’s Most Scenic Spots and Best Photo Destinations
On a walkable island with so many natural rock formations and beach sunset opportunities, make sure to get out to these spots to appreciate the natural beauty of the island.
Arch Rock absolutely tops the list for must-see views. This iconic rock formation arches over the bright teal water and makes for a stunning backdrop. The view can be reached by climbing up 207 steps or by taking a carriage.
The East Bluff is made up of a cliff of absolutely incredible views overlooking the water.
Make sure to take the short trip from town to see Sugar Loaf, a 75-foot-tall stone tower in the middle of the forest.
Sunset Rock is about a 45-minute-long walk from downtown, but it is worth it to see one of the island’s best views of the sun setting over the water.
Even the easiest option is still a stunning way to watch the sunset. After dinner, take a stroll on the boardwalk not far from downtown and enjoy the company that gathers to watch the sun paint the sky orange over the water.

Drawing Inspiration
Nature’s Palette
for local events—everything from children’s birthday parties to graduations. It’s such a meaningful way to connect with the community and to play a small role in families’ special celebrations. You can see my banners and order from me on my banner page, @gp.murals.
Artistic Memories
Kirby Cox
I have so many wonderful memories of creating art in this community, but a recent favorite is the mural I painted for my friend, Kirby Cox. She’s a personal stylist, and when she moved back to Mountain Brook, she had a clear vision for her bedroom. Collaborating with her to bring that mural to life was such a fun and meaningful experience.
Fostering a Love for the Arts
Cherokee Bend Elementary School
I painted a mural for Cherokee Bend Elementary School, and it was so special to connect with the teachers, staff and students—many of whom I also teach in dance. This reminds me how much this community nurtures creativity.
Where Memories are Made
My Home Studio
I love painting in my home studio. Over the years, I’ve curated the space and all of my supplies, to work for my creative process. When weather permits, I often move outside to paint and enjoy the lively energy of my Brookwood Forest neighborhood. One of the most meaningful parts of working at home is painting alongside my 7-year-old son, James. He has his own easel, and we share paints and brushes.
Favorite Painting Birmingham Ornament Trail
painted for the Birmingham Ornament Trail was inspired by the bright, joyful colors of the holiday season. It was displayed during the holidays along 20th Street near the Church of the Advent. I’m incredibly grateful for the support of both the Mountain Brook and Birmingham communities. It means so much to create art that becomes part of the places we share.
