ON THE COVER

A chance meeting on a two-week work trip introduced Kailee and Nathanael, who decided to pursue a relationship despite living three states apart.

WWhen my husband and I married a few years ago, we chose to display photos of the couples that took part in influencing who we both are— our parents and grandparents. We were blessed to have six framed photos, each of a couple who truly meant it when they said “until death do us part.”

Though I saw firsthand for some of them it wasn’t always easy, they looked to God, leaned on each other and chose to love even when they didn’t feel like it.

Last June, my grandfather completed his vow when he passed four months shy of my grandparents’ 70th anniversary.

At 94 years old and the preceding years, Poppy, as we called him, began to use his age as a reason he did not do much. Going to the doctor, eating normal meals and leaving the house were all things he deemed himself “too old to do.”

However, when it came to my grandmother, Tutu, he was never too old. If something was wrong with her, he took care of it or called someone who could.

I think this is a great example of what marriage is supposed to be. After all, if we are only concerned with taking care of ourselves, what is the purpose of the other person?

Nearly three years into our marriage, my husband and I have not endured much in the grand scheme of what may come, but I am so thankful to have this example and a husband who believes in that type of commitment.

As we go on in life, I know I have him to lean on and vice versa. May we all remember, life is not just about us and have care for other people.

In this issue beginning on page 58, I’m elated to share a piece of the stories of four couples on the front end of that mission.

Before that, you can read about a woman who brings happiness in the form of sugar to each wedding with her delicious desserts on page 17. If you are or know someone planning a wedding or like to look at pretty things, check out our wedding content on garden parties (page 27), party favors (page 37), dress types (page 41) and pre-wedding celebration spots (page 51).

Poppy also knew how to inspire happiness in others. That’s him in the photo, smiling and dancing with me, who is also smiling though I most definitely was not interested in dancing.

Here’s to loving fiercely and remembering to smile, even when we don’t feel like it.

With love,

michaela@moodylivingmagazine.com

SWEET DREAMS

PHOTOS BY AMBER HELMS & CONTRIBUTED
At night, when Nikki Donahoo’s kids go to bed, she usually heads back into the kitchen.
“Nighttime is the only part of the day that’s mine,” Donahoo said. “Once the house is quiet, I can slow down and enjoy doing what relaxes me, which is baking.”

Sometimes she’s prepping cake layers, sometimes decorating, and sometimes she’s cleaning up from the day before starting again.

By daylight, Donahoo is a kindergarten teacher at Moody Elementary School. After hours, she’s the baker behind The Floured Apron, a home-based business that grew out of maternity leave and has since become part of weddings and celebrations across the community. What began as a personal creative outlet slowly turned into something others began to rely on for their most meaningful moments.

“I didn’t set out to start a business,” she said. “I just needed something creative that felt like me again.”

Donahoo is originally from South Alabama and moved to this area after marrying her husband. The family has lived in Moody for nearly two years, after moving to be closer as their children became more involved in school and activities.

Donahoo has spent the last 11 years teaching kindergarten at Moody Elementary, balancing classroom life with late-night baking once her own

children are asleep.

“I do most of my baking at night,” she said. “That’s when I can really focus without feeling pulled in a hundred different directions.”

Baking wasn’t always part of her life. As a teenager, she avoided the kitchen entirely. Her mother enjoyed trying new recipes, but she had little interest in cooking or baking.

That didn’t change until college, when she discovered she liked hosting people and cooking for friends. Still, baking cakes didn’t come until much later.

The shift to baking happened during maternity leave with her youngest child, who is now 3. With her older two children at school and her baby napping during the day, Donahoo found herself looking for something creative to fill the time. One afternoon, an Instagram post of an Oreo cake caught her attention.

“I remember thinking, ‘I want to try that,’” she said.

The cake she chose was anything but simple. It involved specialty fillings, a chocolate ganache drip and more than two hours of decorating. When it was

THE CAKE CATALYST

When James Spann visited Moody Elementary School in December 2024, Nikki Donahoo had taken a few cake orders, but The Floured Apron did not exist. Charged to produce the cake for Spann, Donahoo created this two-tiered, Christmas themed cake. Spann shared the cake on social media, so Donahoo was finally convinced to make a Facebook page. Thus, she needed a name for the business, and The Floured Apron was born.

finished, she was proud enough to post a photo online. The next day, a coworker stopped by her classroom and asked if she sold cakes.

“I told her I never had,” Donahoo said. “But I figured I could try.”

Her first order was a strawberry cake with strawberry cream cheese icing for a coworker’s husband’s birthday. She was nervous, but the response was positive. Soon, other teachers began stopping by her classroom to ask if she could bake cakes for birthdays, anniversaries and family events.

One order marked a turning point. A coworker

asked Donahoo to make a groom’s cake—a two-tiered cake topped with chocolate-covered strawberries—for her son’s wedding. It was the largest cake she had ever made, and she delivered it herself, assembling the final details at the venue.

“That was probably the one I was most proud of,” she said. “It felt like the first really big thing I’d done.”

After that, requests for larger events followed. Bridal showers and weddings came next, all through word of mouth.

Despite the growing demand, Donahoo hesitated to formalize her baking into a business.

“I was scared that if I turned it into a business, it would stop being fun,” she said. “I didn’t want to resent something that brought me peace.”

That changed in December 2024, when Alabama meteorologist James Spann visited Moody Elementary. A fellow teacher asked Donahoo to bake a cake for the occasion. Wanting to do something different, she created a two-tiered, Christmas treethemed cake with stripes and 3D decorations.

Spann shared the cake on social media. Later that night, Donahoo received a call urging her to finally create a Facebook page.

“I made it that night,” she said. “I uploaded everything I had so it wouldn’t look brand new.”

She named the page The Floured Apron, inspired by the apron she wears while baking and the flour that inevitably ends up on it. Since then, she’s received messages and orders from people she’s never met.

While cakes anchor her business, Donahoo is especially known for a few signature items. Her banana Nutella muffins are a favorite among teachers at Moody Elementary.

“If you ask anyone at school about my baking, that’s what they’ll mention,” she said.

Her most popular cake flavor is chocolate, often paired with peanut butter icing, followed by strawberry and cookie butter.

Wedding cakes have become a meaningful part of The Floured Apron. Donahoo typically begins working with couples by offering tasting boxes, a selection of cupcakes in different flavors, before discussing design and guest count.

“It’s not just cake,” she said. “You’re part of someone’s wedding day, something they’ll remember forever. That’s a lot of trust, and I don’t take that lightly.”

One of her largest projects was a three-tier lemon cake with raspberry filling and cream cheese icing for a fellow teacher’s daughter. The drive to the venue was nerve-wracking, but the cake arrived intact.

“I was so careful driving that cake,” she said. “I wouldn’t let anyone get close to my car.”

For Donahoo, the most rewarding part of baking isn’t recognition but being part of people’s milestones.

“Sometimes I hear people talking about how good the cake was, and they don’t know it was mine,” she said. “That’s my favorite compliment.”

When asked about the future of The Floured Apron, Donahoo admits she’s thought about opening a bakery, but she’s cautious.

“I want it to add to our lives, not take away from time with my kids,” she said.

For now, The Floured Apron remains a late-night project, quietly built at home, shaped by community, trust and celebration, and sustained by the small, meaningful moments that happen long after the house goes quiet.

A GUIDE TO ALL THINGS WHITE, BRIGHT & BEAUTIFUL

A Garden Party Affair

The Southern Planner, one of the Southeast’s premier wedding planning and design cohorts, offers their tips and tricks for throwing the perfect “garden party-themed” event.

A garden-party celebration offers a quiet kind of luxury—an atmosphere that feels romantic, effortless and timeless. Rooted in the charm of elegant outdoor gatherings from generations past, today’s garden-party aesthetic blends soft refinement with modern whimsy. More and more brides are gravitating toward this style for the way it elevates a wedding day without feeling overly formal: gentle color palettes, heirloom-inspired details and naturally beautiful venues create an experience that is both elevated and inviting. As this look continues to rise in popularity, the question becomes how to execute it well. Here are the key elements we recommend when creating a true garden-party moment.

Florals

Florals are the heartbeat of the style. Choose blooms that feel freshly gathered—roses, hydrangeas, sweet peas and other soft, airy textures. Pastels or muted tones maintain that romantic, garden-grown feel and bring a sense of natural abundance to the day.

Wedding Dresses & Attire

Attire should echo the garden’s beauty. Gowns with floral appliqué, embroidered textures, soft movement or whimsical accessories like gloves or capes complement the setting and enhance the romance.

Tablescapes

Tablescapes allow the theme to fully bloom. Traditional china, layered linens, delicate glassware, petite floral clusters, patterned napkins and handwritten place cards add depth and charm. These details anchor the look and invite guests to linger.

Pro Tips from The Southern Planner

At The Southern Planner, we’re seeing more and more brides gravitate toward the gardenparty aesthetic. It’s a style that feels elevated yet approachable. Matching invitations and paper goods to the theme helps set the tone from the very beginning, while tea foods, light bites and signature beverages continue the experience throughout the day. Thoughtful touches like coordinated décor, layered tablescapes and romantic attire ensure every element works together. When done intentionally, this style creates a day that feels cohesive, elegant and unforgettable—exactly the kind of celebration our clients dream of.

A PARTY FAVOR

Whether as a thoughtful groomsman’s gift or as a treat for guests at a wedding reception, cigars elevate any occasion, bonding people together, slowing down time and transforming single moments into lasting memories. Terry Wester, co-owner of Trussville Cigar Co., believes these shared mementos represent a bride and groom’s gratitude for those closest in their lives. Here, he discusses four different types of popular cigars and what to pair with them for any celebratory event.

PHOTOS BY

1. Sun Grown

Grown in abundance of natural light, Sun Grown cigars’ flavor profiles are richer and zestier than their shadegrown competitors. Smoking a C.L.E. 40th Anniversary Robusto, for example, one will taste a combination of nuts, cedar and touches of honey and graham crackers.

PAIRS WELL WITH:

Rum, bourbon and cognac

Slow-roasted meats

TERRY’S RECOMMENDATIONS:

Perdomo 10th Anniversary

Arturo Fuente Chateau Fuente

2. Connecticut

Famed for their golden wrappers, Connecticut cigars deliver mellow, creamy notes and are ideal for those new to cigar smoking. A classic, the Perdomo 10th Anniversary Champagne, is a nice, low-key smoke, making it a neat choice for group settings with diverse crowds.

PAIRS WELL WITH:

White wine, cappuccinos and lattes

Charcuterie and crème brûlée

TERRY’S RECOMMENDATIONS:

C.L.E. Connecticut 6x60 Perdomo 10th Anniversary Champagne

3. Maduro

A direct contrast to the Connecticut, the Maduro cigar is defined by its toasted, aged leaves and longer, fuller body. First-time triers are often surprised by these cigars’ tastes of dark chocolate, cocoa, molasses and baking spices—smoother, richer flavors that aren’t as harsh as one might expect given its presentation.

PAIRS WELL WITH:

Merlot, espressos and Single-Malt Scotch Smoked meats, aged cheddar and toffee

TERRY’S RECOMMENDATIONS:

Oliva V Double Robusto

Kristoff Veinte Perfecto

4. Arturo Fuente Rare Pink

One of Terry’s favorite brands, the Arturo Fuente Rare Pink’s line fundraises for breast cancer research. This elegant smoke features an Ecuadorian wrapper and a Dominican-grown filler for a well-rounded profile, giving off hints of fruit and floral undertones.

PAIRS WELL WITH:

Bourbon and aged rum

Dark chocolate and nuts

TERRY’S RECOMMENDATIONS:

Queen of Hearts

HOW DID YOU TWO MEET?

On a work trip to Birmingham, I met Nathanael and his boss, who invited me to church, where he is a pastor. I felt the Lord wanted me to visit that church. Unbeknownst to me, Nathanael’s boss, the pastor, is also his dad. Nathanael decided I was worth asking out, despite me living in Houston. We both prayed before meeting each other for what we wanted in a spouse, and God fulfilled that prayer.

HOW DID YOU KNOW YOUR SPOUSE WAS THE ONE?

I knew Nathanael was the one on our third date. He sat me down and said, “OK, it’s time for a serious talk. I want to talk to you about a few things and make sure our hearts are aligned before we pursue each other any further. I would love to continue to pursue you, and will do so wherever you are.” His intentionality, honesty and heart showed me everything I had been praying for: a spiritual leader.

HOW DID HE PROPOSE?

Nathanael partnered with my mom and aunt to create the sweetest surprise. They came up with a plan to get me to the park where we had our first date in Houston. I thought I was reminiscing on special memories, but Nathanael had flown in to surprise me. There, he popped the question and we celebrated with my family.

WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST DANCE SONG, AND HOW DID YOU CHOOSE IT?

Our first dance song was “NOTHING NEW (I do)” by Brandon Lake. The lyrics beautifully express the essence of marriage and the joy of saying yes to forever. It was the perfect reflection of our hearts and commitment of our love, to one another and also to God, who is at the center of our marriage. Every word of the song spoke to the covenant we were stepping into, together as one.

HOW DID YOU TWO MEET?

We met through mutual friends. I was a student at Jacksonville State University, and he grew up right down the road. We reconnected a few years later and the rest is history!

HOW DID YOU KNOW YOUR SPOUSE WAS THE ONE?

He has kept me on my toes since our very first date. He always has a plan B if plan A doesn’t work out. He listens to me talk about whatever is on my mind. He’s goofy, smart, hardworking, and he never lets me open a door. I know that may be silly to some, but he respected me and cared for me like no one had before. He makes me laugh every day, and he will take every chance he gets to dance with me.

HOW DID HE PROPOSE?

One night we ran to Zaxby’s for dinner in his Jeep. As we were driving home he asked if I wanted to have dinner with a view, so of course, I said yes. He took me to a lookout spot off of Hwy 431 between Anniston and Oxford. Two years later, I thought we were headed to dinner with some dear friends, and Dalton said they wanted to ride up to that same lookout point. I had no idea our friend’s daughter brought her camera to capture our engagement. He led me over and got down on one knee, and the rest was a blur! He proposed with his late grandmother’s ring—from a woman I adored. It was absolutely perfect in every way possible. Then, he surprised me even more with our family and friends waiting at the restaurant waiting to celebrate.

WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST DANCE SONG, AND HOW DID YOU CHOOSE IT?

I was stressed about every detail, so Dalton chose “There’s The Sun” by Zach Top, and it was perfect.

HOW DID YOU TWO MEET?

Our friendship began on a lake trip in 2015. Two years later, our love story began. Although we are no longer the 14-year-olds who met on that boat ride, our love has grown stronger with each passing day, with the Lord as our foundation. Over these years, we’ve learned true love can only grow when Christ is at the center of our hearts. We cannot wait to see all that God has in store for our lives together—as one. Forever.

HOW DID YOU KNOW YOUR SPOUSE WAS THE ONE?

I knew he was the one long before I ever admitted it to myself. Even when we were just friends, there was something different about him—something steady, good and genuine. He is so handsome, but even more, a God-fearing man, a hard worker, a leader and someone whose faith is woven into everything he does.

HOW DID HE PROPOSE?

We were going to sell something at a hunting club before dinner reservations, so I was all dressed up. At the top of a mountain, we pulled up to the most beautiful stone pavilion with a cross standing tall. He wanted to get out to look, and though I didn’t, he insisted. I obliviously slipped on my tennis shoes. He told me to put my heels back on, and that’s the moment I realized.

WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST DANCE SONG, AND HOW DID YOU CHOOSE IT?

We chose “Walk in a Room” by Muscadine Bloodline, and it couldn’t have been more perfect. The lyrics captured our hearts in such a sweet and intimate way. As we danced, tears filled our eyes, mesmerized by the reality we were finally husband and wife. This song will forever be a reminder of that special moment, and we know we’ll never stop losing ourselves when the other walks in a room.

HOW DID YOU TWO MEET?

We both work at Moody schools. I am a fifth grader teacher at Moody Intermediate School and Dallas is a maintenance worker for St. Clair County Schools. My grandad had Dallas do HVAC work at his house and tried to set us up a year earlier! We had seen each other around school and once he got my number, the rest was history.

HOW DID YOU KNOW YOUR SPOUSE WAS THE ONE?

We knew so quickly and were only together four months before he proposed. After our first date, we were inseparable. I don’t know when it happened. We just knew that we were meant for each other, and there had never been a love so deep in either of our lives.

HOW DID HE PROPOSE?

We spent so much time at my grandmother’s pool in Moody; he wanted to include our family as well. He decorated the pool area to no end. There were candles, roses and bows everywhere along with pictures of us. He had “Under my Skin” by Nate Smith playing. He also had my best friend from college take engagement pictures on the spot. After he proposed, our families were there for a party!

WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST DANCE SONG, AND HOW DID YOU CHOOSE IT?

Dallas chose our first dance song. It was “I’m Gonna Love You” by Cody Johnson and Carrie Underwood. We wanted something that embodied our love for each other and just how natural it felt for us. No matter what life throws at us, we have each other.

HOW DID YOU TWO MEET?

We have gone to school together since kindergarten and always lived less than a mile from apart. We became close in junior high; however, dating was not in the cards. We went our separate ways for a few years, but Aidan worked up the courage to ask me out junior year. Ever since then, we have been inseparable.

HOW DID YOU KNOW YOUR SPOUSE WAS THE ONE?

LILLY: Aidan has always been such a caring and genuine person. I had a crush on him from the moment we met! He was always such a gentleman in every aspect of his life. I knew that he was the one for me!

AIDAN: Lilly was and still is the hardest-working person I have ever met. Beyond that, she has the sweetest soul. She has devoted her life to serving those at their lowest as a healthcare worker. If I could go back in time, I would marry her ten more times.

HOW DID HE PROPOSE?

Aidan took me to the top of Redmont Hotel. He had flowers and candles lining the rooftop. My childhood best friend was there to capture pictures. We then ate dinner at Perry’s Steakhouse to celebrate our new engagement! Every detail was planned from the heart, which made this moment even more special.

WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST DANCE SONG, AND HOW DID YOU CHOOSE IT?

We chose “Weight of Your World” by Chris Stapleton for our first dance and “Better Together” by Jack Johnson for our last dance. “Weight of Your World” is a beautiful song we felt like Aidan’s poor coordination would still allow him to dance to. “Better Together” is s a song we have listened to since we were little so we consider it “our song.”

WREN MOORE

Special Memories

State Championship Win

It was a full-circle moment that’s hard to put into words—standing on that field not just as an alum, but as a leader watching young women accomplish something historic. That moment wasn’t just about a title; it was about legacy, purpose and the future being built right in front of us.

Sentimental Spots

Farrah Seals Softball Field

It’s where I grew up as a softball player and where countless hours of work, belief and resilience were poured into the game. It’s a place where dreams were chased relentlessly and where gratitude always brings me back.

Outdoor Sites

Bill Morris Stadium

Community Fellowship 4/11 Day

My favorite event the city hosts is 4/11 Day. What started as a date on the calendar, has grown into something much bigger. It’s no longer just a holiday but a reflection of who we are. 4/11 represents the standard this school has built through academics, community and athletics all working together. It’s a day that celebrates excellence, unity and pride, reminding everyone that success isn’t defined by one area alone. The meaning behind 4/11 Day shows what’s possible when a school and a city commit to developing people as a whole, and that’s something truly special to be part of.

Local Eats

Carpanetti’s Pizza

If you’re going to eat anywhere while you’re in Moody, then make sure you stop by Carpenetti’s! They are like family, and there’s no other place to get my favorite dish. My go to dish would be a personal pizza with pepperoni, add pineapples, and make sure you don’t forget their ranch!

The stadium is my favorite outdoor place in the city because it holds so many layers of life and sport. Friday nights are electric, but what I love just as much are Tuesdays and Thursdays when flag football takes over the field. That’s when you see pure joy, growth and confidence being built play by play. Females are putting emphasis on the game, finding their voices and realizing they belong on that field.
