WWhen my husband and I married a few years ago, we chose to display photos of the couples that took part in influencing who we both are— our parents and grandparents. We were blessed to have six framed photos, each of a couple who truly meant it when they said “until death do us part.”

Though I saw firsthand for some of them it wasn’t always easy, they looked to God, leaned on each other and chose to love even when they didn’t feel like it.

Last June, my grandfather completed his vow when he passed four months shy of my grandparents’ 70th anniversary.

At 94 years old and the preceding years, Poppy, as we called him, began to use his age as a reason he did not do much. Going to the doctor, eating normal meals and leaving the house were all things he deemed himself “too old to do.”

However, when it came to my grandmother, Tutu, he was never too old. If something was wrong with her, he took care of it or called someone who could.

I think this is a great example of what marriage is supposed to be. After all, if we are only concerned with taking care of ourselves, what is the purpose of the other person?

Nearly three years into our marriage, my husband and I have not endured much in the grand scheme of what may come, but I am so thankful to have this example and a husband who believes in that type of commitment.

As we go on in life, I know I have him to lean on and vice versa. May we all remember, life is not just about us and have care for other people.

In this issue beginning on page 54, I’m elated to share a piece of the stories of four couples on the front end of that mission.

Before that, you can read about a woman who brings happiness in the form of sugar to each wedding with her delicious desserts on page 13. If you are or know someone planning a wedding or like to look at pretty things, check out our wedding content on garden parties (page 23), party favors (page 33), dress types (page 37) and pre-wedding celebration spots (page 47).

Poppy also knew how to inspire happiness in others. That’s him in the photo, smiling and dancing with me, who is also smiling though I most definitely was not interested in dancing.

Here’s to loving fiercely and remembering to smile, even when we don’t feel like it.

With love, Kristin & Adam

Kristin turned Adam down a few times before agreeing to their first date, which went so well she said “the rest is history.”

Begin Again

Staff

Spring is traditionally considered the season of renewal. It is the season of planting, spring cleaning and of having extra daylight hours to start new projects. With that in mind, these recommendations are focused on all sorts of new beginnings, from the scary first days of school to finding your way in a new place with a culture not your own. Hopefully, this list plants a seed of inspiration to take on a new project or engage with a new genre of book.

The Martha Manual: How to Do (Almost) Everything

For anyone wanting to start a new project or hobby this spring, this primer on a wide variety of projects is a great place to start. Written for breadth and not depth of topic, Martha Stewart’s writing gives a great introduction to many different areas of interest. So if one ends up not having a penchant for gardening, maybe they will find her writing on organizing more their speed. Regardless of aptitude or continued interest, everyone is likely to find something else to learn here.

Junie B. Jones and the Stupid Smelly Bus: The Graphic Novel

In her signature style, Junie B. Jones takes on the most frightening beginning of them all—the first day of school! Now in graphic novel form, this book series that has maintained popularity explores important questions such as: “Why is the bus so smelly?” and “What if someone pours chocolate milk on your head?” While Junie probably can’t see it, and some readers may not pick up on it, the book also explores deeper themes of change and anxiety in a kid-friendly way.

The Second-Chance Convenience Store

Sometimes new beginnings can come from unexpected places. This gently written tale of a convenience store owner and the homeless man who helps to make it a hub for connection and community may not be one with lots of twists of turns, but it is a warm, comfortable narrative. While it is very much a story of redemption and restoration for the main characters, it is also one of a community forming from a group that used to be strangers. This is a great read to inspire hope for renewal and belief in a new start.

Fruits Basket, Vol. 1

“Every new beginning comes from some other beginning’s end.” -Seneca

While none of these books require knowing or reading any philosophy, this quote perfectly encapsulates the journey went on by the main character of this manga series, Tohru Honda. She loses her mom and winds up living by herself in the woods. Despite all of this, she finds a new family of sort thanks to her unfailing kindness, open heart and extraordinarily gentle nature. This book is, despite some occasionally difficult material, mostly a comedy dealing with the ramifications of Tohru’s intersection with a cursed family, who turn into animals upon contact with the opposite sex. Hijinks ensue; heart strings are pulled, and many people find hope and a new, happier beginning.

How to Survive in the Age of Dinosaurs

This non-fiction, juvenile book, written in the style of a survival guide, may not be practical due to the lack of dinosaurs to survive, but it is a fun read for kids whose imaginations are ready for the ride. In addition, this year’s theme for summer reading is “Unearth a Story,” and this book can help them get excited for all the dinosaur-themed programs headed their way in the summer!

Sweet Love

Lena

Gauntt bakes love into each of her sugary creations regardless of the occasion.

PHOTOS BY DAWN

CCreating confectionate connections through each scrumptious moment can only mean it is love at first bite at Suga Mama’s Bakery. What started out as a fundraiser to earn money for her daughters’ dance competitions became a cherished community staple throughout the Leeds community and beyond. Established in 2023, by owner and baker Lena Gauntt, the name Suga Mama’s came about with a joke from her then-boyfriend, now-husband.

“We were in high school when he said he was going to find him a Suga Mama and not have to work as an adult. When it came to name the business, he joked that he was finally getting his Suga Mama, and it stuck!” Gauntt said.

Learning to mix humor and love into her delectable treats, Gauntt’s grandmother sparked her affinity for baking. As a child they would make wedding cakes together while her grandfather was away in the military.

That childhood experience has carried into her booming business. Gauntt said she is honored to have the opportunity to carefully craft such a meaningful cake on a couple’s big day, and it makes her heart smile when the bride first sees the cake.

“It is the wow factor that the bride gets,” she said. “Hearing the bride gasp is such a special moment for me.”

When meeting a couple for the first time Gauntt

suggests they make a date night out of cake tasting.

“I make up a tasting box with three flavors, fillings and icings,” she said. “That way they can feel out their vibe. This way is more fun.”

While she loves crafting delicacies for couples on their special day, Gauntt does other occasions as well. As for the most creative cake she’s ever created, she said it has to be her James Spann cake, which she described as “a story book of James Spann” for when he visited the library last summer.

When she’s not busy making a happy couple’s big day that much sweeter, her favorite thing to bake is her homemade oatmeal cream pies.

“It’s heavenly smelling the oats and cinnamon together,” Gaunt said of the sweet snack.

The greatest compliment she has ever received is one that makes her chuckle.

“A lot of brides when they see their cake say, ‘Oh, it looks too pretty to eat.’ While that makes me proud, I tell them, ‘Go ahead, you need to eat it; you paid for it,’” she said.

Not only does Suga Mama’s add that special touch to a deserving couple’s wedding day, she also makes clever cookies for bachelorette parties and anniversary cakes.

“A couple of months ago I made a cake for a couple celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary,” Gauntt said with a smile. “Another thing I have done is ‘Be My Bridesmaid’ cookies and cookies as a takeaway from the wedding reception. One of my favorites was the image of polaroid photos they had taken that were imposed on the cookie. It was a definite wow factor!”

Knowing a thing or two about lasting love themselves, Gauntt and her husband, who she lovingly

refers to as Splenda Daddy, will celebrate their 18th anniversary this May.

On the occasion that Suga Mama gets to venture out alongside her Splenda Daddy, this dynamic duo likes to enjoy a nice meal, typically steak, at a restaurant they have never tried and end the evening topped off with an ice cream night cap.

“We like to go out to eat. It is just nice that it is something that I do not have to cook,” Gauntt said, laughing. “Ice cream is my love language. It depends on where we are, but my favorites are turtle, anything with caramel and cookie dough. Splenda Daddy, sparingly because he has to be careful due to diabetes, enjoys his Moose Tracks.”

As for their own wedding cake, Suga Mama and Splenda Daddy’s cake was vanilla with blue florals and made with love by her grandmother. However, Gauntt’s favorite cake currently is her chocolate, which she crafts by first blooming the chocolate to increase its flavor.

Summing up Suga Mama’s Bakery in one word, Gauntt said that word is blessing.

“It has blessed me,” she said. “As a former stay-athome mom, it has gotten me out of the house and given me purpose. It has not only allowed me to give

Living with a chronic health condition doesn’t mean childhood has to stop. At Children’s of Alabama, we make sure kids can keep doing what they do best—laughing, playing, and simply being kids. With expert care, advanced treatments, and a team that never stops believing in brighter days, we help families navigate their healthcare journey with confidence, strength, and hope.

back, but this business has given so much back to me. It has blessed me and helped me bless others in so many ways.”

Looking forward to Suga Mama’s prospering, Gauntt is excited to host cake decorating classes and continue offering cookie decorating classes at local hotspot Rails & Ales. For anyone just getting started on their own, she advised, “Find a recipe, stay with it and perfect it.”

As for her, Gauntt hopes to be able to greet, and welcome customers-turned-friends into a storefront in downtown Leeds soon.

“It is my dream and goal to open a storefront,” she said. “Hopefully, it will be in Downtown Leeds where the pinks and teals and color of the store will help brighten up Parkway Drive. Having a storefront will show possibility and continue to show the success stories of how business can be successful in Downtown Leeds.”

Growing her business from her kitchen deep in Greenwave country, Lena Gauntt, The Suga Mama, bakes for every occasion and celebrates each moment with love, one bite at a time.

A GUIDE TO ALL THINGS WHITE, BRIGHT & BEAUTIFUL

PHOTO BY ERIC & JAMIE PHOTOGRAPHY

A Garden Party Affair

The Southern Planner, one of the Southeast’s premier wedding planning and design cohorts, offers their tips and tricks for throwing the perfect “garden party-themed” event.

A garden-party celebration offers a quiet kind of luxury—an atmosphere that feels romantic, effortless and timeless. Rooted in the charm of elegant outdoor gatherings from generations past, today’s garden-party aesthetic blends soft refinement with modern whimsy. More and more brides are gravitating toward this style for the way it elevates a wedding day without feeling overly formal: gentle color palettes, heirloom-inspired details and naturally beautiful venues create an experience that is both elevated and inviting. As this look continues to rise in popularity, the question becomes how to execute it well. Here are the key elements we recommend when creating a true garden-party moment.

Florals

Florals are the heartbeat of the style. Choose blooms that feel freshly gathered—roses, hydrangeas, sweet peas and other soft, airy textures. Pastels or muted tones maintain that romantic, garden-grown feel and bring a sense of natural abundance to the day.

Wedding Dresses & Attire

Attire should echo the garden’s beauty. Gowns with floral appliqué, embroidered textures, soft movement or whimsical accessories like gloves or capes complement the setting and enhance the romance.

Tablescapes

Tablescapes allow the theme to fully bloom. Traditional china, layered linens, delicate glassware, petite floral clusters, patterned napkins and handwritten place cards add depth and charm. These details anchor the look and invite guests to linger.

Pro Tips from The Southern Planner

At The Southern Planner, we’re seeing more and more brides gravitate toward the gardenparty aesthetic. It’s a style that feels elevated yet approachable. Matching invitations and paper goods to the theme helps set the tone from the very beginning, while tea foods, light bites and signature beverages continue the experience throughout the day. Thoughtful touches like coordinated décor, layered tablescapes and romantic attire ensure every element works together. When done intentionally, this style creates a day that feels cohesive, elegant and unforgettable—exactly the kind of celebration our clients dream of.

A PARTY FAVOR

Whether as a thoughtful groomsman’s gift or as a treat for guests at a wedding reception, cigars elevate any occasion, bonding people together, slowing down time and transforming single moments into lasting memories. Terry Wester, co-owner of Trussville Cigar Co., believes these shared mementos represent a bride and groom’s gratitude for those closest in their lives. Here, he discusses four different types of popular cigars and what to pair with them for any celebratory event.

PHOTOS BY

1. Sun Grown

Grown in abundance of natural light, Sun Grown cigars’ flavor profiles are richer and zestier than their shadegrown competitors. Smoking a C.L.E. 40th Anniversary Robusto, for example, one will taste a combination of nuts, cedar and touches of honey and graham crackers.

PAIRS WELL WITH:

Rum, bourbon and cognac

Slow-roasted meats

TERRY’S RECOMMENDATIONS:

Perdomo 10th Anniversary

Arturo Fuente Chateau Fuente

2. Connecticut

Famed for their golden wrappers, Connecticut cigars deliver mellow, creamy notes and are ideal for those new to cigar smoking. A classic, the Perdomo 10th Anniversary Champagne, is a nice, low-key smoke, making it a neat choice for group settings with diverse crowds.

PAIRS WELL WITH:

White wine, cappuccinos and lattes

Charcuterie and crème brûlée

TERRY’S RECOMMENDATIONS:

C.L.E. Connecticut 6x60 Perdomo 10th Anniversary Champagne

3. Maduro

A direct contrast to the Connecticut, the Maduro cigar is defined by its toasted, aged leaves and longer, fuller body. First-time triers are often surprised by these cigars’ tastes of dark chocolate, cocoa, molasses and baking spices—smoother, richer flavors that aren’t as harsh as one might expect given its presentation.

PAIRS WELL WITH:

Merlot, espressos and Single-Malt Scotch Smoked meats, aged cheddar and toffee

TERRY’S RECOMMENDATIONS:

Oliva V Double Robusto

Kristoff Veinte Perfecto

4. Arturo Fuente Rare Pink

One of Terry’s favorite brands, the Arturo Fuente Rare Pink’s line fundraises for breast cancer research. This elegant smoke features an Ecuadorian wrapper and a Dominican-grown filler for a well-rounded profile, giving off hints of fruit and floral undertones.

PAIRS WELL WITH:

Bourbon and aged rum

Dark chocolate and nuts

TERRY’S RECOMMENDATIONS:

HOW DID YOU TWO MEET?

Brandon and I have known each other since I was in sixth grade and he was in seventh. We always ran in the same friend group and grew up around the same people. It’s funny to look back now and see how our story started so early, long before we knew what it would turn into.

HOW DID YOU KNOW YOUR SPOUSE WAS THE ONE?

After years of not really talking, we somehow started crossing paths around Leeds again and instantly hit it off. At first, we laughed off all the “Y’all are definitely going to date” comments and didn’t think much of it. However, the more time we spent together, the more it all started to make sense. Once we finally gave it a chance, we realized everyone had been right all along.

HOW DID HE PROPOSE?

Brandon really played off proposing; I truly had no idea he even had a ring. My family was taking what I thought were just Christmas card photos at the Birmingham Botanical Gardens, but they ended up being proposal photos instead.

WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST DANCE SONG, AND HOW DID YOU CHOOSE IT?

“Just the Two of Us” by Bill Withers and Grover Washington, Jr. started becoming popular again right around the time Brandon and I began dating, and it quickly felt like our song. Every time it came on, it just seemed to fit us so naturally. It’s one of those songs that instantly puts you in a good mood and always reminds us of that sweet, fun season when everything was just beginning.

HOW DID YOU TWO MEET?

We met three years before we began dating through mutual friends at a card shop that we both just happened to be at. At the time, we were both in very different places in our lives., but three years later, he reached out to my best friend and told her that he had been thinking about me and asked her for my number. All those years went by, and he still remembered me from just one visit! Then, the connection was instant.

HOW DID YOU KNOW YOUR SPOUSE WAS THE ONE?

We would talk for hours on end. It felt like we were two kids at a slumber party staying up late, laughing and sharing secrets. We had never experienced a connection like that with another person before. It felt like we had gone our entire lives living in the dark until we found each other and suddenly life was so bright.

HOW DID HE PROPOSE?

He surprised me after work! I came home and there was a note on the door that said “Follow Me.” Rose petals were sprinkled all over the floor with a trail leading down to our den. I followed the trail down the stairs, and he was waiting for me with candles lit and pictures of us on the table. I was so surprised and excited that I practically blacked out and almost didn’t hear the actual proposal; I had to ask him to repeat himself! It was the best day of my life besides our wedding day.

WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST DANCE SONG, AND HOW DID YOU CHOOSE IT?

We danced to “We Belong Together” by Ritchie Valens. It had the ideal energy for a romantic first dance and perfectly encapsulates the love and devotion we feel for each other.

HOW DID YOU TWO MEET?

We met through church but were reintroduced by my mom years later.

HOW DID YOU KNOW YOUR SPOUSE WAS THE ONE?

There was never really a moment. From the first date, we were just so aligned on our beliefs, wants for kids and our careers that we both just knew. He called his mom after the first date and said “If I can keep her on the hook, she’s the one,” and here we are.

HOW DID HE PROPOSE?

He told me we were going to go to lunch with two friends. Then on the way, he said my dad needed his help at the church where he is the pastor. I really believed him because I thought he was going to propose after lunch with our friends. We walked into the sanctuary of my childhood church, and he had candles and a Bible and the ring sitting out, and he did it there. It was very special because that’s where we first met.

WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST DANCE SONG, AND HOW DID YOU CHOOSE IT?

“Forever and Ever and Always” by Ryan Mack was our first dance song. A couple months into dating, our niece was born. On the way to the hospital, which was a fairly decent drive, he played the song, and he said this is what we’re gonna listen to when I marry you. He did not know that’s what I chose for our first dance, but I always remember that moment in the car with him.

HOW DID YOU TWO MEET?

We met on Hinge! It was funny because we had so many mutual friends, yet somehow our paths never crossed. One cheesy pickup line later, I was completely hooked. I did turn him down a few times before my friend finally convinced me to give him a chance. We ended up at Red or White in Downtown Birmingham, where one drink turned into hours of laughter and effortless conversation. By the end of the night, it was clear this wasn’t just another first date. The rest is history.

HOW DID YOU KNOW YOUR SPOUSE WAS THE ONE?

I knew Adam was the one when I realized he passed the ultimate test…my dog Beans! Beans (the cutest miniature goldendoodle) usually bites everyone, so when Adam came over for the first time, I told him, “Just stand still, and let him sniff you. Maybe he won’t bite.” Instead, Beans walked right up to him, sniffed him and instantly started loving on him. That was the moment I knew. His good looks and charm didn’t hurt either.

HOW DID HE PROPOSE?

It was right before Christmas, and my best friend was in town, so we had plans to go out to dinner together. We drove separately from our friends, and as we were walking, he casually lead us right by our favorite restaurant, Bettola. Under the glow of the string lights, he stopped and proposed. Afterward, we enjoyed a quiet, intimate dinner just the two of us, soaking it all in, but the surprises weren’t over! Later that night, he revealed that all of our family and friends were waiting to celebrate with us at Cahaba Brewing Co. It was perfect.

WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST DANCE SONG, AND HOW DID YOU CHOOSE IT?

We danced to “Joy of my Life” by Chris Stapleton because we both love that song and Chris!

MY LEEDS MAEGAN DOCKERY

Leeds Main Street Marketing Director + Owner of MD Marketing & Design

Community Fellowship

Mistletoe on Main

Mistletoe on Main is my very favorite event hosted in Leeds. There is nothing quite like seeing your own town transformed into a Hallmark Christmas movie! It’s a lot of work to pull off, but seeing the community come together and get more involved each year makes it so worth it. When I look back on all that I’ve done with Leeds Main Street, helping with Mistletoe on Main is definitely what I’m most proud of.

Local Eats

Sweet Caroline’s I have very quickly become a huge fan of the dill pickle pizza at Sweet Caroline’s. I love anything with pickles, so when I saw this was an option, I knew I had to try it immediately! Even my husband loves it, and he doesn’t like ranch, but somehow it all works together so perfectly. If you’re a pickle fan, I cannot recommend it enough!

Sentimental Spots

Downtown Leeds

Downtown Leeds, in general, feels very sentimental to me. I quit a job I didn’t love in May 2023 when I realized I was missing out on so many things with my sons. After a summer at home, I started my own marketing business, where I have been able to help a few small businesses in downtown Leeds. This led to a position on the Leeds Main Street board and then to becoming the Leeds Main Street Marketing Director. I am so grateful for the opportunities I’ve been given, and Downtown Leeds has played such a huge role in that. Working with these businesses, getting to know business owners and doing my best to help them thrive, has been so rewarding. If you haven’t spent much time in downtown Leeds, I highly encourage you to check it out. Everyone is so friendly and working so hard to succeed, and I love that my family gets to call this town home.

Outdoors Spots

Monster Mash Dash

We love the Monster Mash Dash, hosted by Leeds Primary and Leeds Elementary Schools. As you run or walk the route, teachers from both schools cover you with colored powder and cheer you on. It’s the absolute best fundraiser for the schools! I have helped plan and just been a participant, and it’s fantastic on both sides! It’s such a fun option for our family, and we plan to attend for many years to come!

Special Memories

Creating Home

After moving to Leeds in August 2016, we quickly fell in love with Leeds. We had the opportunity to purchase a home in November 2019. Around the time our house was set to be built, the pandemic hit. Luckily for us, our rental home was within walking distance, so we took walks every day to watch the progress of our house. Taking these family walks and having something to look forward to was so special for our family. I will forever look back on those walks, watching our house transform into our home, with so much gratitude.
