HHave you ever noticed how slippery a slope falling in love can be, especially when you least expect it? Many of the brides featured in this issue would agree. Few could point to a single moment when they knew they’d found “the one.”
Reflecting on my own love story, I don’t know that I could either, but my husband, Justin, absolutely can.
It was March 11, 2020. We had only been dating for a few weeks at the time but had been close friends for nearly a year. While we were vacationing with friends, we watched the news and heard the name, COVID-19, for the first time.
Foolishly, we celebrated “another two weeks of spring break” with a round of shots. In the weeks that followed, while the world seemed to be going up in flames, Justin remained calm, steady, pragmatic even.
I never understood why.
Our premarital counselor later described Justin as a golden retriever—radiantly positive with a no-quit, solution-oriented mindset. The guy never has a bad day. It’s both admirable and annoying as a black cat like myself.
Fast forward three years, and I watched through streams of tears as Justin recited his wedding vows to me: “Anna, I thought back to our Gulf Shores beach trip in 2020. A thick fog rolled over the beach, and the president came over the TV, announcing border closures because of a new virus called COVID-19. I knew then that even though the future was uncertain, I would be fine because I had you to stand next to. So, I can say for certain that that was the first time I knew I loved you.”
For someone who then still couldn’t even pinpoint her “I knew, too,” moment, that was the most poignant knife to the heart.
Now only a handful of years into our marriage, here’s what I’ve learned: Love is rarely linear. It doesn’t matter when you learned you were in love; although, those moments do make sweet stories. What really matters is how your love for each other endures even the most uncertain of times.
I’m proud to say that Justin has remained my pillar of strength from that day forward, always eager to help me see the bright side of things. If The Killers’ hit single wasn’t about infidelity, I’d totally say his nickname should be “Mr. Brightside.”
So, from us to you, I wish you nothing but a love that lasts, readers. I hope you love big and loud and recklessly, but most of all, I hope you never lose sight of how beautiful venturing into the unknown can be with the one of your dreams.
Love on, readers,

ARTS CULTURE&
A NEW CHAPTER AT 78
Rose Cook is bringing handmade jewelry, fine art and a spirit of revitalization to Patton Creek.
BY CARMEN BROWN
PHOTOS BY KELSEA SCHAFER
I“It’s never too late” has become an overused cliché, but at 78 years young, award-winning abstract artist and jewelry maker Rose Cook is the true embodiment of that phrase. In fact, believe it or not, she recently tried turnip greens for the first time.
“A friend of mine made them last night, and they were really good,” says the Weehawken, New Jersey, native, who had never tried casseroles or grits until she first moved to Alabama more than 12 years ago.
But when it comes to her passion for all things artistic, the timing could not have been more perfect. Rose rang in the New Year on Saturday, Jan. 10 with the opening of her Visual Feast Gallery: 1,000 square feet of beautiful art, handmade jewelry, artistic clothing for women—featuring sizes 12-16—and other vintage finds.
“I chose the name Visual Feast because it is about art,” she says. “It’s about the senses. It’s a feast because we’re going to have different choices.”
Rose says Visual Feast is part of a new revitalization project by RCG Ventures, a private
real estate corporation. RCG plans to restore the Patton Creek shopping center to its “original state of thriving small and large businesses.”
“I am excited to be a part of this revival,” she adds. “The new deal with RCG is going to be a major improvement for the community. It’s going to be so vibrant.”
Joking that she has “lived a lot of lives,” Rose says her journey has been one of gradual self-discovery, revealing talents over time that she saw no indication of during her childhood.
“I grew up a poor kid,” she explains. “My mother was a waitress, and she died when I was 19. When you grow up in chaos, how do you focus?”
After her mother died, Rose became like a mom to her younger siblings, then-ages 12 and 2, taking care of them for three years before getting her own place five blocks away. She worked a variety of administrative and marketing jobs until, at 28, she was hired at IBM.
“I was the first woman they hired in an office of about 30 guys,” she says. “I really liked it. I did that
Fun Facts about Rose Cook
uFavorite Food: “I love French food, but I’ll eat just about anything.”
uMusic: “I just recently started listening to country and western. I’m a big Swiftie fan!”
for about three years.”
uEntertainment: “When I’m not watching YouTube videos about painting, I love to watch documentaries about monkeys. I’m fascinated by how much they are like humans!”
By then, another career path was beckoning her, and after she had her first child at age 40, she decided to try making jewelry. She used gold-filled wire, Czech beads, lamp-worked beads and freshwater pearls, all of which she still uses today.
“I was staying at home with my son, so I was like, ‘What am I going to do now?’” she says. “So I started playing around, making it for my friends.”
Rose did not begin painting until 15 years later. She does not know if it was an innate gift she always had, but her sister, Irene Burns, was an accomplished oil painter in Tuscaloosa. She believes anyone can
tap into his or her artistic side and plans to offer painting parties after hours for groups of six-toeight people, ages 10 or older.
“Look at kids. They can paint because they’re not inhibited,” she says. “Any of us can do it. It’s in our nature to be creative.”
Rose is represented by the Copley Society of Art in Boston, Massachusetts, which is the oldest nonprofit arts association in the United States. Last year, she was the first-place winner for the Fall Members Art Show for her collage titled, “The Hunt.”
She is a huge admirer of Wassily Kandinsky, a Russian painter who was one of the pioneers of abstract art in the early 1900s. However, she really loves all kinds of art.
“I’m pretty open to all types,” she explains. “There’s not anything I can’t find some beauty in.”
She says that since she does not have to pay a commission to other galleries to show her work, she is able to sell her art for half the price of what the galleries would charge. She also does not require her artists to be exclusive because she does not want them to be limited as to where they can show their work.
“I’m not afraid of competition,“ she says. “Many artists are treated really poorly by the galleries. They only give them a couple of spaces, and they’re forced to go and do shows. I want to give artists the opportunities that they deserve. They contribute so much to our community.”
Visual Feast Gallery contributing artists include Han Min Zaw Wirth, who in 2022 was named the International Master Watercolor Artist at the Art Connection Mandate, Exposition d’aquarelle, in Albi, France. The gallery also features the work of
Barbara Casey, a certified art teacher in Florida who has participated in art shows around Alabama and North Carolina. The work of Amy Anderson, her new floral artist, will debut in April.
For artwork that does not sell after a period of time, Rose has a special area she calls “Homes for the Paintings.”
“This will just be my artwork, and if I don’t give it to charity, I will reduce the price by as much as 50 percent,” she says.
After living in various locations including New
York, Boston and Mexico during the last few years, she and her husband Bill moved back to Alabama last June. Rose is happy to be back, starting this next chapter in her life.
“Now that I’m back in Alabama, I notice all the trees and flowers,” she says. “It’s beautiful here. Hoover is growing, and I love the diversity.”
Visual Feast Gallery is located at 4421 Creekside Avenue, Suite 117, in the Patton Creek shopping center. To learn more, call 617-404-3234 or visit visualfeastbyrose.com.

Tap Ins Golf Lounge in Knox Square caters to every crowd.
BY
ANNA GRACE BREEDLOVE
PHOTOS BY BLAIR RAMSEY
TTo kick off the wedding weekend, “I Do Crews” prioritize places that foster fellowship amidst breaking the ice, and in the Knox Square entertainment district, Tap Ins Golf Lounge provides just that. The brainchild of Mike Frymark, a 21-year Army veteran and proud husband, father and golfer, Tap Ins first opened to the public in August 2025 after nearly two years of planning and construction.
“I joined the military when I was 17 and a half,” he says. “I did medical logistics. I traveled the world for 21 years and my last duty assignment was here in Alabama in 2007 and I’d been stationed in the South and with me being a golfer, I knew I wanted to stay in the South and not go back home. When I got to Alabama, I was very pleasantly surprised at what Birmingham had to offer.”
Now, he and his wife, Bertha Hildago, and their two children are Hoover locals. They feel excited to now own a business in the city they have called
home for close to 20 years.
“When I retired from the Army in 2010, I got into the cellphone business,” Mike explains. “I ran a few stores for Cellular Sales. I stayed with them for 15 years and decided to take a leap of faith and chase a dream.”
Being from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Mike says golfers in his hometown could only enjoy the sport six months out of the year, but after moving to Birmingham, to his surprise, he learned golf was a year-round hobby. Then during the COVID-19 pandemic, he got a treat, and from it, a bright idea.
“I originally wanted to do some sort of driving range, like a double-decker driving range that you had to be 21 and over to get upstairs and there’d be a bar and food,” he says, adding that after another business came to town, he knew his plan needed to adapt. “Then during COVID, I got a simulator in my basement, and I enjoyed it so much that I was like, ‘Alright, this needs to be something here in Alabama.’”
He explains that as the pandemic’s restrictions
began lifting, more people began looking for things to do outside, and golf was a natural answer. Now that quarantine periods have diminished, membership at country clubs have skyrocketed with some clubs boasting near-year-long waiting lists.
“There’s not enough golf courses to meet the demand of the people around here,” Mike says, later adding, “you can no longer call the same day and get a tee time. They used to send groups out every 15 minutes. Now, they’re sending them out every eight minutes to try to accommodate more people. When you get more people on a golf course, it obviously takes longer to play. Now, you’re looking at a fourand-a-half-to-five-hour round, and in Alabama, the heat and humidity makes it not very fun.”
That’s when he shifted focus from building a driving range to an indoor golf simulator lounge. He first looked at signing a lease in Pelham, but as fate would have it, the developers of the Knox Square entertainment district invited him to open up shop right here in town.
“There is all the food, drink and dessert you want in these three shopping centers (Knox Square, Brock’s Gap and Stadium Trace), but there aren’t any activities,” Mike says, revealing why they chose to build in Knox Square. “Hoover really needs a place like this, where they can come hang out and bring the family.”
Today, Tap Ins features four state-of-the-art TrackMan simulators that feature more than 500 courses each, including Pebble Beach, Bandon Dunes and Black Desert to name a few.
“There’s different kinds of simulators out there, but a lot of them share software; whereas, TrackMan has its own in-house software, and by far has the best graphics and gameplay,” Mike says. “I think it’s the most accurate out of all of the simulators out there, and it’s really as unique as to someone who is completely new to golf.”
For those new to the scene, a golf simulator operates via radar system, where a camera up above the player tracks the golf ball below based on its velocity, direction, launch angle and spin. Based on
this equation, it shows how one’s ball would have flown on a course.
Attendees can also enjoy duckpin bowling, shuffleboard, sports on all 14 different TVs and a full-service bar.
He credits his engineer, Susan Barron, with helping bring his vision to fruition. The result is a quaint yet lively, energetic but still refined space that is big enough to host parties but intimate enough for attendees to still hold a conversation.
Although what “I Do Crews” will love most about
Living well happens
Living with a chronic health condition doesn’t mean childhood has to stop. At Children’s of Alabama, we make sure kids can keep doing what they do best—laughing, playing, and simply being kids. With expert care, advanced treatments, and a team that never stops believing in brighter days, we help families navigate their healthcare journey with confidence, strength, and hope.
Tap Ins is that golf plays only a part of the festivities.
“Everyone kept asking, ‘What’s your demographic? Who are you trying to reach?’ It’s really like 8-80. I don’t really have a specific demographic because we’re inclusive to everybody,” Mike says.
That inclusivity is exactly what wedding weekends need.
Not every member of the party will want a loud nightclub scene, nor will everyone want to play a five-hour game in the often scorching Alabama heat.
Here, wedding parties can enjoy all of the fun without any of the sunscreen, and there’s plenty of food and beverage options that suit any palate, too.
Under the direction of general manager Jeff Campbell, the bar—which sits directly in the middle of the lounge—is open from all sides and features a standout menu with the Tap Ins Old Fashioned being the most popular.
Childrens AL •org
We are here in your neighborhood at Greenvale Pediatrics - Hoover and Vestavia Pediatrics.
“It’s a bourbon and pecan liquor kind of mix, and the pecan liquor kind of softens the bite and makes it taste really good,” Mike explains.
The laundry list of appetizers, too, yields a mouthwatering sensation with every bite. From a pesto turkey and cheese sandwich to mozzarella sticks to spinach and artichoke dip and more, every member of the crew will find something he or she enjoys.
“The hot dog is my favorite menu item,” Mike says with a laugh, adding it is simple yet done well.
He believes that whether parties want a weddingeve hangout or a post-dinner after party, Tap Ins will cater to every crowd.
“We have a great event space here,” he says. “It’s big enough where you can get a large party in here, yet it’s small enough to where it’s still intimate so if people are bowling and people are golfing, you’re a matter of steps away.”
Proximity matters because wedding weekends thrive off connection, and such is best built in the company of good friends.
In Hoover’s Knox Square, Tap Ins Golf Lounge meets a need: an event space that bridges the gap between both people new to each other and those new to the sport. For locals, it is an exciting hot spot, and for outof-town wedding guests, it remains a neat surprise.
For the “I Do Crew,” however, it is the ultimate kickoff to a memorable weekend, so swing a club and raise a glass—the celebration starts here, no tee time needed.
Tap Ins Golf Lounge is located at 5844 Elsie Road. It is open Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 11 a.m.-11 p.m. and Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to midnight. After 9 p.m., the lounge is only open to those 21 years old or older. For more information or to book your next event, visit tapinsgolflounge.com or call 205-999-6797.
A Life Well Lived
Dottie Blom reflects on her 102 years with gratitude for her loved ones and the opportunity to serve others.
By Ashley Tiedt
Photos by Kelsea Schafer & Contributed
WWhen Dottie Blom says she has been “very fortunate,” she says it without drama or selfcongratulation. At 102, the words sound less like modesty and more like a simple statement of fact, spoken by someone who has lived long enough to see how fragile and how resilient a human life can be.
Born on Nov. 23, 1923, Dottie has lived through world wars, social upheavals, medical innovation and cultural transformations. Through it all, she has carried a steady belief in fairness, service and responsibility to others.
“I was born in Brooklyn, New York, at a very small hospital. It was so small, in fact, that they eventually moved me to New York Hospital in Manhattan,” she says.
Her father worked in Manhattan, and the family lived in the suburbs, including Long Island and Maplewood, New Jersey.
Her memories are vivid windows into American history. She remembers the kidnapping of Charles Lindbergh’s infant son. Dottie was about 7 years old at the time.
“I was afraid to go to sleep,” she says. “I thought the window could open, and they’d put a ladder outside and take me away.”
Her parents comforted her but also encouraged independence, a balance that would echo throughout her life.
There were also happy times. She attended one of the first Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parades with her family, an outing that made a deep impression.
“My father was a businessman,” she remembers. “He was very proud that businesses had made such a showing.”
Music also left its mark on her life. Her first concert was Tommy Dorsey and Artie Shaw before later watching a young Frank Sinatra perform.
She remembers the crowd, the dancing in the aisles and the excitement.
“We wore our poodle skirts to hear him perform. We weren’t supposed to, but we kicked off our shoes so we could dance better,” she says of Frank Sinatra, smiling as she recalls the feeling.
Dottie attended high school at a time when opportunities for girls were limited, but not nonexistent. She lettered in four sports: swimming, basketball, volleyball and field hockey.
However, structural inequality was ever-present.
“I could not be ‘head girl’ because I was a woman,” she recalls. A male student held the top leadership position, and she was required to walk behind him.
“That really bugged me.”
This experience would stay with her and spark a passion for her later in life.
After high school, she attended the College of

William & Mary in Virginia, but history intervened in her plans. Following the attack on Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941, she felt compelled to change course.
“There was a group of Navy chaplain cadets that would march across the campus,” she says. “And I thought, ‘What am I doing sitting in this room?’”
She left the bachelor’s program and enrolled in nursing school at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center in New York City, where nurses were urgently needed for the war effort.
Nursing would become both her profession and the path that led her to her husband, Dr. Gaston Eugene Blom, known as GEB. She met GEB when he was a medical intern struggling to put on a head bandage.
“The nurses were taught better how to do the head bandages,” she says. She showed him how to properly dress a head wound, and not long after, he asked her to the nurses’ prom.
“GEB had asked another nurse before me. So, he had to break it off with her first, which was tricky,” Dottie admits.
GEB would go on to graduate from Harvard Medical School with honors. Together, they built a family-

centered life rooted in mutual respect.
“He was a good family man,” she says. They traveled, camped and raised four children, two sons and two daughters, who would later earn advanced degrees and pursue careers in medicine, psychology, social work and international business.
Dottie’s nursing career evolved alongside her family life. She worked for many years as a school nurse.
Later, her work expanded into public health education. While living in Michigan, she received a grant from the Kellogg Foundation to help develop
curriculum sex education, a controversial topic at the time, and another on the effects of alcohol.
While living in Boston, she worked with underprivileged families in housing projects, teaching health practices and checking on children. From there, her sense of global responsibility led her even farther.
After seeing television coverage of Romanian orphans suffering under a brutal regime, Dottie and her husband volunteered to help. The conditions were harsh.
“It was cold,” she remembers. “We slept in our winter coats.”
Supplies brought by volunteers were sometimes stolen by village children who had nothing themselves, forcing the group to confront the complexity of poverty and desperation.
“It was hard to understand both sides,” she says.
That philosophy drew her to the League of Women Voters, where she worked to educate women about civic participation. She saw firsthand how many
newly enfranchised women simply voted as their husbands, including her own mother.
“My mother was glad to be able to vote, but I wanted to think for myself,” Dottie says.
The League helped women learn how to research candidates, attend debates and develop independent political opinions.
“If you don’t vote,” she adds, “then you really don’t have the right to complain.”
From voter education to sex education, from school nurse to volunteering abroad, Dottie Blom has lived her life in service to others, always believing in liberty, justice and fairness to all. Despite all she has accomplished, she is quick to say her greatest achievement is raising her four children.
She still has the metal bracelets with numbers etched into them that were placed on newborns for identification before plastic hospital bracelets were invented. Her home is filled with photographs of those “accomplishments” along with her 10 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
Although she has visited every continent except one and witnessed seismic cultural shifts, when asked to reflect on it all, she does not claim wisdom or greatness. She returns instead to gratitude and effort.
“I’ve been very fortunate,” she says again, smiling.

A Garden Party Affair
The Southern Planner, one of the Southeast’s premier wedding planning and design cohorts, offers their tips and tricks for throwing the perfect “garden party-themed” event.
BY SHELBY KNIGHT
PHOTOS BY EMILY GREEN CREATIVE
A garden-party celebration offers a quiet kind of luxury—an atmosphere that feels romantic, effortless and timeless. Rooted in the charm of elegant outdoor gatherings from generations past, today’s garden-party aesthetic blends soft refinement with modern whimsy. More and more brides are gravitating toward this style for the way it elevates a wedding day without feeling overly formal: gentle color palettes, heirloom-inspired details and naturally beautiful venues create an experience that is both elevated and inviting. As this look continues to rise in popularity, the question becomes how to execute it well. Here are the key elements we recommend when creating a true garden-party moment.
Florals
Florals are the heartbeat of the style. Choose blooms that feel freshly gathered—roses, hydrangeas, sweet peas and other soft, airy textures. Pastels or muted tones maintain that romantic, garden-grown feel and bring a sense of natural abundance to the day.
Wedding Dresses & Attire
Attire should echo the garden’s beauty. Gowns with floral appliqué, embroidered textures, soft movement or whimsical accessories like gloves or capes complement the setting and enhance the romance.
Tablescapes
Tablescapes allow the theme to fully bloom. Traditional china, layered linens, delicate glassware, petite floral clusters, patterned napkins and handwritten place cards add depth and charm. These details anchor the look and invite guests to linger.
BEHIND
THE SCENES
Follow these vendors on Instagram for more garden party-themed inspiration:
At The Southern Planner, we’re seeing more and more brides gravitate toward the gardenparty aesthetic. It’s a style that feels elevated yet approachable. Matching invitations and paper goods to the theme helps set the tone from the very beginning, while tea foods, light bites and signature beverages continue the experience throughout the day. Thoughtful touches like coordinated décor, layered tablescapes and romantic attire ensure every element works together. When done intentionally, this style creates a day that feels cohesive, elegant and unforgettable—exactly the kind of celebration our clients dream of.
A PARTY FAVOR
Whether as a thoughtful groomsman’s gift or as a treat for guests at a wedding reception, cigars elevate any occasion, bonding people together, slowing down time and transforming single moments into lasting memories. Terry Wester, co-owner of Trussville Cigar Co., believes these shared mementos represent a bride and groom’s gratitude for those closest in their lives. Here, he discusses four different types of popular cigars and what to pair with them for any celebratory event.

1. Sun Grown
Grown in abundance of natural light, Sun Grown cigars’ flavor profiles are richer and zestier than their shadegrown competitors. Smoking a C.L.E. 40th Anniversary Robusto, for example, one will taste a combination of nuts, cedar and touches of honey and graham crackers.
PAIRS WELL WITH:
Rum, bourbon and cognac
Slow-roasted meats
TERRY’S RECOMMENDATIONS:
Perdomo 10th Anniversary
Arturo Fuente Chateau Fuente
2. Connecticut
Famed for their golden wrappers, Connecticut cigars deliver mellow, creamy notes and are ideal for those new to cigar smoking. A classic, the Perdomo 10th Anniversary Champagne, is a nice, low-key smoke, making it a neat choice for group settings with diverse crowds.
A direct contrast to the Connecticut, the Maduro cigar is defined by its toasted, aged leaves and longer, fuller body. First-time triers are often surprised by these cigars’ tastes of dark chocolate, cocoa, molasses and baking spices—smoother, richer flavors that aren’t as harsh as one might expect given its presentation.
PAIRS WELL WITH:
Merlot, espressos and Single-Malt Scotch Smoked meats, aged cheddar and toffee
TERRY’S RECOMMENDATIONS:
Oliva V Double Robusto
Kristoff Veinte Perfecto
4. Arturo Fuente Rare Pink
One of Terry’s favorite brands, the Arturo Fuente Rare Pink’s line fundraises for breast cancer research. This elegant smoke features an Ecuadorian wrapper and a Dominican-grown filler for a well-rounded profile, giving off hints of fruit and floral undertones.

Bourbon and aged rum
Dark chocolate and nuts

DRESS NAME: Orchid Blossom

Each appliqué is handplaced, creating a dimensional garden of 3D rosettes that bloom across the bodice. The intricate texture brings depth, movement and a sculptural floral elegance reminiscent of atelier couture.
Beneath the lace layer, a sleek, straightneckline corset offers clean architectural structure and a refined contemporary silhouette. The balance between the soft, blooming lace and the minimalist corsetry creates a striking interplay of romance and modernity.
The ensemble transitions into a sculpted crepe mermaid skirt that hugs the figure with precision, elongating the bride’s silhouette and enhancing her natural curves. Its smooth, uninterrupted lines offer a luxurious contrast to the intricate texture above, while the gentle flare at the hem adds movement and understated drama.
Mermaid silhouettes create a modern, romantic statement and are designed for the bride who cherishes fine craftsmanship, loves artistic detail and seeks a gown that embodies both softness and strength.

HOW DID YOU TWO MEET?
We met at a church family dinner through ACC Birmingham.
HOW DID YOU KNOW YOUR SPOUSE WAS THE ONE?
I knew John Will was the one because God made it unmistakably clear. Months before John Will and I ever dated, God told me, “This is my best for you.” Later, He told John Will that He would bring his wife to him, and He did. Every step of our story was confirmed through prayer, peace and divine timing. When God’s hand is so clearly writing your story, you don’t have to question, you just know.
HOW DID HE PROPOSE?
Six months before we started dating, John Will proposed with the diamond he’d bought while in Israel on a family trip, believing in faith that the Lord would bring him a wife. He proposed in the same spot we’d first met.

HOW DID YOU TWO MEET?
We met through high school and church, so we’d known each other for quite a while. It wasn’t until after we both graduated from Auburn University, however, that we started dating.
HOW DID YOU KNOW YOUR SPOUSE WAS THE ONE?
I knew Timothy was the one very early on. From the beginning, I couldn’t imagine my future without him in it. He had all the qualities— and even more—than I had prayed for in a husband. There was just a deep sense of peace and certainty with him that I’d never felt before.
HOW DID HE PROPOSE?
Timothy proposed at a meaningful place for us, Chace Lake. After dinner with my family, he drove us there, and we walked down a sidewalk lined with pictures of our two years together, taking a sweet walk down memory lane. At the end of the path, he proposed, read a letter and gave me a Bible with my new name engraved on it.
WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST DANCE SONG, AND HOW DID YOU CHOOSE IT?
Our first dance song was “Amazed” by Lonestar. Timothy chose it because the lyrics perfectly captured how he felt about me, and it felt like the perfect way to celebrate our love on such a special day.

HOW DID YOU TWO MEET?
Michael and I were officially introduced to one another by my best friend and future matron of honor, Kaitlyn, at a bonfire in fall 2009, when we were a junior and senior at different high schools.
HOW DID YOU KNOW YOUR SPOUSE WAS THE ONE?
I knew at 16 that Michael was the “one.” Through 14 years of going our own way, we always stayed close friends, and I cannot remember a single high or low in life that wasn’t shared with him. When we started dating in 2023, Michael told me, “I don’t have to date you to figure out if I want to marry you. I’ve always wanted to marry you, so I have to date you.” After years of always loving each other from afar, we found “forever” in each other at just 16 and 18 years old.
HOW DID HE PROPOSE?
Michael and I planned on going to the Hoover Country Club for dinner with his family. When we arrived, we decided to go grab a drink at the bar. When we turned the corner, there were flowers, candles and champagne set up, and that’s when it hit me—he was proposing! After a few sweet words, Michael got down on one knee and asked me to be his wife.
WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST DANCE SONG, AND HOW DID YOU CHOOSE IT?
Our first dance was to Elvis Presley’s “Can’t Help Falling in Love.” Elvis was a favorite of my late grandfather and Michael’s mother, so his music has always been special to us. When we were driving to dinner one night, this song came on, and we both knew it was the perfect one.

HOW DID YOU TWO MEET?
We met at Top Golf in Hoover while we were both on our winter breaks from college. I was in graduate school at the University of Alabama, and he was a freshman at Baylor University. A mutual friend, Hunter Blackburn, invited us both, and we hit it off from there.
HOW DID YOU KNOW YOUR SPOUSE WAS THE ONE?
I knew Zach was the one when we would hang out all night, sometimes until 4 a.m., doing nothing but talking, getting to know each other and learning about what we each wanted in life.
HOW DID HE PROPOSE?
Zach proposed in our hotel room the weekend I was visiting Texas to look at apartments. We had a normal night like many others, talking about our dreams for the future, and he asked, “Do you want to be spontaneous?” I responded, “Yes!” From there, he proposed to me at 11 p.m. at night.
WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST DANCE SONG, AND HOW DID YOU CHOOSE IT?
“Tuesdays” by Jake Scott was our first dance song. We chose this song because we knew it described our relationship. We went through two-and-a-half years of long distance, and we had to learn how to communicate and get through trying times. We knew we would always be able to work through anything if we could get through this period together.

TRANSFORMING KINDNESS IN HOOVER
Sandlin
Foundation supports local charities
to help children and families in need.
BY LAUREN H. DOWDLE
One new charitable foundation is spreading kindness through Hoover by meeting the specific needs of struggling children and families.
Dwight Sandlin, chairman of the board for Signature Homes, and his wife, Sandy, started the Sandlin Foundation for Kids and Kindness this past December. Although the couple has lived and worked in Hoover for years, it wasn’t until recently that they realized the extent of the needs nearby.
“I’ve been building houses in Hoover for 30 years, and my assumption was that the city was pretty affluent because that’s who we build homes for,” Dwight says. “But then I learned that 5 miles from my house is a kid who doesn’t get breakfast and that more than 30 percent of the students in Hoover schools qualify for free or reduced lunches. That’s unacceptable.”
He spoke with people like David Bannister—founder of Neighborhood Bridge Hoover, a nonprofit that provides basic needs for students and their families—and learned more about organizations that were already assisting people in Hoover. That helped plant the idea to create a foundation that provided resources to existing nonprofits, with the Sandlins providing the money to get it all started.
Currently, the Sandlin Foundation supports 11 charities including Ady’s Big Army, Family Connection, Hoover City Schools Foundation, Hoover Helps, Hoover YMCA, Hope for Autumn Foundation, Joyful Noise, Libby’s Friends, Magic Moments, Neighborhood Bridges Hoover and Smile-A-Mile.
“We’re very proud to help these folks do more of what they’re doing to give back to Hoover,” Dwight says. “These 11 charities
already have a system in place, and we’re supplying money to them so they can help more people.”
Every dollar that’s given to the foundation goes directly to those charities, so there’s no overhead. Donors will be able to see the amount given to each charity on the foundation’s website for complete transparency.
“That’s the most unique thing about this organization,” Dwight says. “It’s very strategic. None of this is just to give money somewhere and not know where it goes. We want to make sure it’s defined and strategically goes to a kid where it’s supposed to go.”
That money has already helped provide things like meals, money for field trips, a playground for the Hoover YMCA, summer camps, after-school care for children at the YMCA, hotel rooms for out-of-town parents with children in the hospital and much more.
“We’re not just giving money to a family,” Dwight says. “We’re giving shoes, glasses or clothes to a family. Every dollar goes directly to where it’s needed. We’re trying to connect the nice
people who can afford to give with the people who need the help.”
Dwight encourages others to open their eyes to the needs throughout the Hoover community.
“When you look around, you see all sorts of needs that are there,” Dwight says. “Just be kind, help those people and don’t assume everyone has the same abilities you have. We want Hoover to be a kind place.”
David, also a board officer for the Sandlin Foundation, says they’re adding impact to each organization they partner with, and they hope to partner with even more before the end of the year. The Sandlin Foundation has already impacted the lives of thousands throughout Hoover, and they’re only getting started.
“I don’t know anyone who has stepped forward like Dwight and Sandy. What they’re doing is transforming kindness in Hoover,” David says. “Dwight has built homes for more than 6,000 people in Hoover, but now he’s building a better life for everyone.”

Take a shuttle from the airport to Mackinaw City, then a 20-minute ferry ride to the island. Once you arrive, there’s no shortage of unique, beautiful inns and bed-and-breakfasts at which to stay.
Chippewa Hotel Waterfront is located across the street from Historic Fort Mackinac. It is home to Pink Pony on Mackinac Island, an ever-iconic restaurant and bar famed for its pink interior and American fare. The hotel also boasts a large hot tub that visitors will adore. Mission Point Resort’s beautiful 18-acre property sits on the edge of the lake, providing views from the lawn and the guestroom windows. It’s located on the sunrise side of the island and is the only dog-friendly resort on the island.
Lake View Hotel dates back to 1858 and boasts a beautiful, Victorian exterior with fully renovated rooms inside. It’s located on Main Street, just steps away from the shops and restaurants that the downtown entertainment district has to offer. Lake View also provides an indoor pool and hot tub—the only one on the island.
First opening its doors in 1889 for summer tourists, Grand Hotel stands atop a hill with its grand porch overlooking the lawn. The hotel is home to 13 different restaurants and bars, and it maintains old-fashioned elegance by requiring elevated evening attire after 6:30 p.m. in the main areas.

WHERE TO EAT
Mackinac Island is known for its world-famous fudge, and the shops collectively make more than 10,000 pounds of fudge every day while in season. The island also features more than a dozen fudge shops, and tourists can take a stroll down Main Street, trying out the free samples. The original Mackinac Island fudge shop, The Original Murdick’s Fudge, notably makes its treats on a marble table in front of guests, inviting them in with the sweet smell of fresh fudge.
For dinner, go to The Carriage House in Hotel Iroquois for waterfront dining, a nightly pianist and classic American cuisine, or try Kingston Kitchen at the Village Inn for American classics with a Jamaican flair. Woods Restaurant also serves American and European foods with a slight twist: in a grand Tudor mansion. Adjacent is Bobby’s Bar, which has the oldest duckpin bowling alley in the U.S. Pink Pony comes highly recommended as a place to get a drink and a bite to eat.
To top off the evening, take a sunset stroll on the Main Street Boardwalk, and sample ice cream from Sadie’s Ice Cream Parlor, located at both Grand Hotel and on Main Street.

WHAT TO DO
What is there not to do? Mackinac Island offers the perfect amount of vacation activities for both a relaxing and invigorating trip. For a romantic and relaxing honeymoon, curl up with a good book in the Adirondack chairs on the lawn overlooking the water at Mission Point Resort. This lawn is open for any visitors to the island.
Mission Point Resort and Grand Hotel also offer spa-andsalon options to enhance vacation relaxation. Tour the island in style by taking a horse-drawn carriage tour with Mackinac Island Carriage Tours. Spend a morning golfing on The Jewel, and take their horse-drawn carriage ride in between nines.
For the active couple, spend time together out on the water kayaking and snorkeling with Great Turtle Kayak Tours. This company also has an option for kayak cruises at both sunrise and sunset. Take a boat tour around the island with Ugly Anne Tour Company to learn more about the island and northern Michigan. Take in the views by walking, running or biking the island’s more than eightmile-perimeter on M-185, the carless highway. Along the way, you’ll pass by Arch Rock and countless other lookoffs and beach spots.
For a taste of history, visit Historic Fort Mackinac—the oldest building in Michigan—first built in 1715. It was used in the War of 1812 and has 14 restored buildings on the property that are open to the public. To visit other historic sites and buildings on the island, tickets can be purchased for less than $20 for adults.

Essential Outlooks
The Island’s Most Scenic Spots and Best Photo Destinations
On a walkable island with so many natural rock formations and beach sunset opportunities, make sure to get out to these spots to appreciate the natural beauty of the island.
Arch Rock absolutely tops the list for must-see views. This iconic rock formation arches over the bright teal water and makes for a stunning backdrop. The view can be reached by climbing up 207 steps or by taking a carriage.
The East Bluff is made up of a cliff of absolutely incredible views overlooking the water.
Make sure to take the short trip from town to see Sugar Loaf, a 75-foot-tall stone tower in the middle of the forest.
Sunset Rock is about a 45-minute-long walk from downtown, but it is worth it to see one of the island’s best views of the sun setting over the water.
Even the easiest option is still a stunning way to watch the sunset. After dinner, take a stroll on the boardwalk not far from downtown and enjoy the company that gathers to watch the sun paint the sky orange over the water.

HHM Roofing & Construction
Hello neighbors,
My name is Ryan Hoerl, and I’m the proud founder of HHM Roofing & Construction. As the certified roofing and exteriors expert for this magazine, I’m thrilled to introduce myself and share my passion for helping homeowners like you.
With more than 30 years in home construction, I hold a license with the Home Builders Association of Alabama and am an active member of the Greater Birmingham Home Builders Association (GBHBA) and the Better Business Bureau. My journey began in the cold streets of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, but for the past two decades, I’ve embraced the long, hot summers of Alabama; trust me, nothing puts the heat into perspective like roof inspections in July!
Before launching HHM, I dedicated 18 years of my life to helping my wife build her employer benefits agency. While she focused on growing her business, I spent much of my time helping families with their homes, a passion that has always been close to my heart. In early 2023, I decided to fully return to my roots in construction and commit wholeheartedly to the roofing and home exteriors industry.
At HHM Roofing & Construction, we’re built on four core values:
uHelp First – Your needs come first, always.
uEducate Second – We empower you to make informed decisions.
uConstant Communication – You’ll never feel out of the loop.
uEfficiency – We respect your time and resources.
As your home exteriors expert, I’m here
to help with roofing issues, rotten fascia and soffits, window trim, siding repairs and even exterior painting for a fresh new look. When you work with HHM, you’ll receive detailed information to make the best choices for your home.
HHM Customer Service Tip #1: Protecting Your Soffits and Fascia
The soffits (the underside of your roof’s overhang) and fascia (the flat board where gutters are attached) are particularly vulnerable to rot. Here’s why this happens:
uMissing Drip Edge: Drip edge is a metal flashing installed at the edge of your roof to prevent water from sneaking under shingles and soaking into the wooden fascia. Without it, moisture builds up, leading to rot.
uUndersized or Poorly Installed Gutters: Many homes come with builder-grade, 5-inch gutters that can’t handle heavy rain from large roof surfaces. Overflowing water can damage the fascia and soffits.
uInferior Materials: Some builders use materials like medium-density fiberboard (MDF) for fascia and soffits. Unfortunately, MDF isn’t designed for exterior use and deteriorates quickly when exposed to moisture.
Annual Home Inspections: A Proactive Approach
Early detection of these issues can save you from costly repairs. That’s why we offer complimentary, 22-point home inspections conducted by our highly trained technicians. At HHM, our mission is to educate homeowners because a well-informed homeowner is a well-prepared homeowner.
If you’re ready to ensure your home is protected, give us a call today to schedule your inspection. Together, we can preserve the beauty and integrity of your home for years to come.

Sentimental Spots
Tip Top Grill
My grandmother lived in Bluff Park while I was growing up, and I have so many memories of spending Saturdays at Tip Top Grill with her. Even though it’s no longer there, it remains a sentimental place for me, full of memories of those afternoons and the view we enjoyed together.
Get Outdoors
Hoover Parks & Recreation
Hoover Parks & Recreation runs a fantastic adult softball league, and my friends and I love being part of it. Thursday nights are spent outdoors at Hoover’s sports parks, competing and enjoying the community atmosphere.
Eat Local Moe’s BBQ
One of my favorite meals in Hoover is at Moe’s BBQ. It’s my go-to spot for celebrations or when I’m in the mood for a familiar favorite. I always order the smoked wings! They’re my ultimate comfort food and never disappoint.

Coordinating Events for The City
Being an event coordinator means taking an idea and bringing it to life. I love seeing all the details come together, tackling challenges, collaborating with teams and creating experiences that bring joy and connection to the community.

SEC Baseball Tournament
The SEC Baseball Tournament is my absolute favorite event the city hosts. The entire city comes together to bring the event to life, from every city department to local volunteers. That teamwork is what makes it successful, and being a part of it is what makes it so fun.
