Dare I say this is not an unpopular opinion—rather a collective agreement— vermillion should be green, not red. Whoever was in charge of naming this color fumbled the ball; however, this issue’s local standouts have proven that adversity only builds tenacity, and they’ve shown our community what it looks like to be on the last down but never give up. Terry Beckham is a renowned artist in his own right. Doodling from as long as he can remember, he picked up a pencil and never put it down. The expressionistic landscape artist is famed for his depictions of nature, but he also loves to create model rockets. Read more about how the Space Race between the United States and the Soviet Union influenced his artistic passions as a child on page 13. Another local icon, Jian Jackson, recently helped lead the University of Alabama’s women’s wheelchair basketball team to win its sixth consecutive national title, its 12th in program history. The star athlete has faced a mountain of hurdles, beginning when she contracted polio at just 5 months old. Flip to page 27 to read Jian’s story—one of the most inspiring tales of adoption and resilience you’ll read all year. One of the best attributes of Hoover is its diversity. Husband-and-wife team Mohan Kalagotla and Sravani Busireddy have brought tastes from South India to Riverchase; their menu features nearly 370 different items. However, none of this would come to pass if not for an insatiable itch Mohan first felt during the COVID-19 pandemic. Everyone knows Mayor Nick Derzis is one of the best-dressed mayors in the state of Alabama—I don’t care if that’s an opinion. It’s not up for debate. Yet, what many may not know is that his house is just as exquisite—and his wife Stephanie Derzis, one-half of the dynamic duo behind Howarth Haddock Design, is to thank. Marvel at her amazing talent on page 47—you won’t be disappointed. Earlier this year, a new pageant circuit, Miss Iconic USA, was created as a scholarship competition for rising students. Hoover High School sophomore Lucy Helland was crowned Miss Iconic USA Teen—the firstever person to wear the crown. Read about her victorious run and community service platform on page 57. In Terry Beckham’s art studio, his ideas lay halfthought-out on his desk and easel. A detailed heavy sketch, an expressionistic landscape on a wood panel atop an easel and many inspiration pictures on the walls. Models of rocket ships decorate the space, a reminder of what he had once he started out drawing. The lifelong Hoover resident has been drawing since he could pick up a pencil, even doodling on the margins of his schoolwork. Terry had always wanted to be an artist and remembers primarily drawing rocket ships and airplanes when he was a kid. If not an artist, he wanted to one day become an astronaut because at the time, the Space Race between the United States and the Soviet Union was at its peak. Terry found himself fascinated by it. “I’m about the same age as the space program,” he says. “I grew up being really interested in space because it’s like what’s happening to you. I was just on the edge all during the 60s watching how the space race developed and the technology.” Terry jokes that because NASA never called, he
pursued an art career. In public school, he began taking any art classes he could to further his craft. It wasn’t until his mother read about the Alabama School of Fine Arts (ASFA) in Birmingham that he felt like he had found a way to start making art a career. So, he applied for the school and was accepted. After graduating from ASFA, he had wanted to go to an art school, but his parents encouraged him to get an academic education as well. So, he attended the University of Alabama in Birmingham and pursued his Bachelor of Fine Arts. While there, he found that he really enjoyed printmaking. “It was a real step forward,” Terry says about majoring in printmaking. “It was almost like a drawing technique, and I think that’s what attracted me to it. It wasn’t a big stretch from drawing, and I always really liked to draw a lot.” One of his professors at UAB encouraged him to look into bigger and more accredited art departments at other schools. After looking at every college in Alabama with an art department, he decided to finish his degree at the University of HooversMagazine.com 15

Alabama. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in printmaking and photography and a minor in art history. After graduating, Terry started working as a waiter at a bar his friend worked at. One night he ran into a UAB professor he had, and she asked him what he was doing. She then told him that she was working on a federally funded mural project to paint downtown Birmingham, and they were down two artists. Once he talked to the director of the grant, Terry was hired to paint murals. “I’m not much of a painter, and that was a real learning curve to learn how to paint better, especially on the scale we were doing downtown, but it was great,” he says. Terry was incredibly grateful to be hired as an artist for the first time, so he lived in downtown Birmingham until the project and federal grant eventually ended 18 months later. However, the arts co-op that sponsored the project, the Greater Birmingham Art Alliance, hired him to help run their gallery. As a gallery director, Terry helped move art exhibitions in and out of the gallery, putting them up
and taking them down monthly. Once the funds for the position ran out, he was out of work and wondering what to do next. Because of his great love of the outdoors, he planned a trip to hike the Appalachian Trail. Before he could leave for the trip, Terry’s former boss from the Greater Birmingham Art Alliance sent him a job posting from the Huntsville Museum of Art. They were hiring an exhibit designer. “I read the description, and I said, ‘I can do all that,’” Terry says. “I mean, these are all things that I have been doing or dwell within my capability and I thought I really could use some experience and interview experience.” He put together a portfolio of his work and sent in his application. He then went to Huntsville for the interview, got offered the job and moved to
Huntsville two weeks later. From his perspective as an artist, he really enjoyed working with exhibits up close and getting to admire their work. “It was just a great segue into design and exhibits, you know, getting a real good insight,” Terry says. “All along in this period, I’m still making my own work as I can make time and have energy to do it.” After working four years at the Huntsville Museum of Art and gaining valuable experience, Terry began to get more ambitious and look at museums with bigger collections. After looking at and talking with three different museums, the Birmingham Museum of Art offered the best opportunity for him. He moved back to Birmingham and started as an exhibition designer at the Birmingham Museum of Art. For 34 years, he worked at the museum, but it

began to get a little repetitive. So, he retired about eight years ago and decided to focus more on his own personal art. With an art studio in the back of his house and more free time, he began to start painting and sketching all kinds of art. Most of his inspiration comes from his outdoor travels, especially since he was a scoutmaster for 13 years and spent a lot of time in nature. Many of the expressionistic landscapes he paints are based off real photos he took. “It’s all derivative from experiences outside, hiking, camping and stargazing,” Terry says. “I mean that’s one of my favorite things to do is hang out and look at the stars.” One of his favorite paintings he has ever done is a piece currently hanging in his house based on a camping trip he went on as a scoutmaster. They were staying by a lake that had a small island made of rock with a tree coming out of the side. The first time they came across it, one of his scouts told him that he should paint it, but it wasn’t until he saw it at night that he knew he had to paint it. The painting consists of pieces of gatorboard joined together to form a collage. The main part of

it features a night scene with a calm lake and the rock island surrounded by trees on the bank. The other gatorboards behind it have the same scene, but with a black-and-white, sketch-like quality. Terry also used small sticks to decorate the empty windows of space between the gatorboards. “I had started adding bark to paintings, so it just was one more element to bring in from what I was experiencing,” Terry says about the piece. He primarily uses wood panels and oil paint for most of his pieces but sometimes uses acrylic paint or does graphite sketches with pencils. He also enjoys making collages from his own art. Lately, he has been attending lots of art shows to sell prints and show off his pieces. One of his favorites and the one he most frequents is the Bluff Park Art Show because it’s located here in Hoover. At last year’s Bluff Park Art Show, Terry won the 2025 August A. and Carey Moore Memorial Award. It meant a lot to him to receive that recognition from the community that he’s been a part of for so long. “My job is a real creative job,” he says, later adding, “I’m not only successful, but it’s the creative act that’s a great feeling. I’m so happy that I had a

Art that was once a job is now a creative outlet for him in retirement, and there’s always something new to be worked on in his art studio. As the leaves begin to turn, the library has a full season of programs to help families learn, create and connect. BY JUSTIN ROGERS PHOTO CONTRIBUTED From back-to-school activities in September to Halloween festivities in October and family fun throughout November, there is something for everyone at the library this fall. September brings plenty of opportunities for students to get settled into a new school year. Kids can enjoy football-themed games and crafts during Time to Tailgate, while homeschool families can get their school pictures taken during Homeschool Hub: Picture Day. Young readers can build confidence by reading to Libby, the library’s facility dog, and teens can create vision boards to set goals for the new school year. Families can also explore hands-on learning through storytimes, STEAM activities, Dungeons & Dragons and more. October brings the library’s annual celebration of all things spooky. During fall break, Rock-Tober invites children and families to explore geology through rock-themed activities, a scavenger hunt and an interactive display. Young nature lovers can also meet representatives from the Alabama Wildlife Center during their Birds of Prey program. Halloween takes center stage later in the month with Monster Mash, the library’s annual Halloween party for monsters big and small. Costumes are encouraged, and a sensory-friendly preview will give families an opportunity to enjoy the festivities in a more comfortable setting. Adults can get into the spooky spirit, too, with the Hoover Horror Picture Show and All Hail the King, a one-day film
festival celebrating the dark world of Stephen King. November offers plenty of opportunities to slow down and enjoy the season together. Families can celebrate “Happy Birthday, Pooh Bear!” with games and crafts honoring 100 years in the Hundred Acre Wood. Children and families can also take their stories outdoors during Story Hike, where library storytellers combine a short hike with stories and discoveries at Inverness Nature Park. Some people are born to be athletes and excel at a variety of sports. That seems to be true for Jian Jackson, even though she didn’t know what sports were until she was 8 and can’t walk. Born in China, Jian contracted polio when she was 5 months old and became paralyzed in her lower half. But for her, that diagnosis was simply a part of her life. “It’s just normal for me because it’s what I’ve always lived with,” Jian says. “I’ve never known anything different, so I’m used to it.” She was adopted by Daniel and Stacie Jackson and moved to the United States when she was eight years old. It wasn’t until she moved to the States that she began learning about sports and soon got connected to the Lakeshore Foundation. FINDING HER PASSION Having created Birmingham’s first adapted sports team in 1984, Lakeshore offers opportunities for people with physical disabilities. The foundation provides services for more than 4,000 individuals
and serves as an Olympic and Paralympic training site. In 2017, Jian participated in Lakeshore’s summer camp and got her introduction to adaptive sports, which was right up her alley. “I’ve always loved doing things outside of the house,” she says. From horseback riding to swimming, she tried out a variety of sports before landing on basketball. She began playing on the prep team that year when she was 12. By 2019, she had moved up to the varsity team and joined the Lakeshore women’s wheelchair basketball team. While on the varsity team, her team won three national championships. “I like wheelchair basketball because I can be really fast,” Jian says. “It’s like you’re walking, but you’re not, and you can still catch up and beat an average person. I can’t imagine not playing basketball.” After graduating from Hope Christian School last year, Jian began attending the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa where she’s majoring in neuroscience and says she hopes to one day become a vet. basketball and joined the women’s wheelchair basketball team at Alabama. And her streak of being part of a national championship team continued. Alabama’s women’s wheelchair basketball team earned its sixth consecutive national title and 12th in program history this past season. The Tide won 55-37 in the championship game against the University of Texas at Arlington, who they have defeated the past three years to win the championship. The team ended the season with a record of 24-3. “It was exciting to win as a team, especially with our five seniors,” she says. TEAM PLAYER While there aren’t positions in wheelchair basketball like guards or centers, Jian says each player has her own set of skills that they capitalize on. For her, it’s all about going fast. “I’m really good at speed, defense and setting the pace,” Jian says. “I’m the one who works for my upperclassmen, and I like to do fast breaks a lot.”

From the practices to spending time with her teammates away from the court, the young women were able to form strong bonds that helped them win. Jian says she made lasting connections with her teammates, including another player who was also originally from China. Forming those friendships and learning from other athletes helped her on a personal level, too. “It helped shape me to become more confident and learn about other people who are different from me and also from those who are the same. I became more confident over time,” Jian says. “I want to continue to practice and learn a lot from being in college and my coaches.”

COMPETING WITH THE BEST Not only is it difficult to keep up with her on the court, but it’s nearly as hard to list all of the awards and honors she’s received. Jian has earned AllRookie Team recognition as a freshman at Alabama, a silver medal with Team USA at the 2024 Wheelchair Handball World Championships, Borne to Serve Award 2025, All-Tournament Team Play 2025, Championship game MVP Junior Nationals 2025 and also played on the 2025 U.S. Women’s Wheelchair Basketball National Varsity Team—only to name a few. Now a sophomore at Alabama, Jian is also

SMALL BUT MIGHTY While there are several similarities between wheelchair and able-bodied basketball—like both using the same standard court dimensions and hoop heights—Jian Jackson says people might be surprised to learn that wheelchair basketball is fast-paced and involves so much contact. “It’s aggressive. You’re beating up on each other, and people trash talk,” she says. “It’s just like standup basketball but in a chair.” Something even more unexpected is how physical she plays given her size, but she says she uses that to her advantage. “I’m smaller than they think I am—small but mighty,” she says. “They would see me as another Asian girl pushing her chair, but I’ve played in varsity levels with adult teams and flipped them. It’s better playing with new players because they wouldn’t expect that from me.”
preparing to compete again to be selected for the National Wheelchair Basketball Association’s (NWBA) U.S. Women’s Wheelchair Basketball National Team. The tryouts will be held in the fall and are for women under the age of 25. Jian has made it through the initial rounds of the tryouts in the past and says she’s training to hopefully make the team, which includes 12 players and alternates. Competing against some of the best athletes in her sport has only helped drive her more to become the best version of herself. “It’s really fun, and it helps you work harder and lets you know what parts you need to improve on,” Jian says. “Great players are really consistent, and newer players like me can learn from that.” When she isn’t speeding around the court or honing her basketball skills, Jian says she enjoys bird watching, looking at animals, taking photos, playing wheelchair korfball and doing wheelchair CrossFit. She’s previously participated in track and field, as well. No matter if it’s in sports or life, Jian encourages others to continue pushing themselves. “I think it’s about finding joy, positivity and people who will challenge you,” she said. “Never give up, and find the light in the tunnel.”

Nick Hattabaugh has always been passionate about fitness and helping people become stronger and more confident. After working in emergency services, he realized his passion was coaching and making a positive impact on people’s everyday lives. Joining 24e Hoover gave him the opportunity to work with clients of all ages and experience levels while continuing to grow as a coach and build his own coaching business. Here, he elaborates on his profession and desire to aid his clients in their fitness journeys. What inspired you to become a trainer, and what motivates you to help clients achieve their goals? Fitness completely changed my life, and I wanted to help others experience that same confidence and sense of accomplishment. I enjoy working with clients of all ages and experience levels, whether their goal is fat loss, building muscle, increasing strength, improving athletic performance or simply living a healthier lifestyle. Helping people achieve goals they once thought were out of reach is what motivates me every day. Which experience solidified your purpose as a coach? One moment that really solidified my purpose as a coach was when a client told me they finally felt comfortable walking into the gym alone after weeks of training together. They weren’t just stronger physically—they had gained confidence in themselves. That reminded me that 36 Fall 2026
coaching is about much more than sets and reps; it’s about helping people believe in their innate capabilities. For clients whose primary goal is weight loss, what first three changes would you recommend? I focus on building habits that are sustainable. First, increase daily protein and eat mostly whole foods. Second, strength train consistently while increasing daily movement through walking. Third, prioritize sleep, hydration and consistency over perfection. Small habits repeated every day always outperform extreme diets that don’t last. For clients prioritizing strength training, which foundational exercises do you recommend for the upper body, core and lower body? I prioritize compound movements because they build the most strength and muscle. For the upper body, presses, rows and pull-downs. For the lower body,
squats, deadlifts, Romanian deadlifts and split squats. For the core, planks, carries and anti-rotation exercises. These movements build a strong foundation that transfers to everyday life and athletics. What is the best part of your job? The best part of my job is helping people become stronger, healthier and more confident in every aspect of life. Whether I’m coaching someone toward fat loss, muscle growth, improved athletic performance or simply better overall health, seeing clients accomplish goals they once thought were impossible is incredibly rewarding. For the past two years, Hyderabad House has been offering authentic South Indian dishes to its guests. With bold, savory dishes and a uniquely decorated interior, the restaurant is bringing the rich flavors and spices of Hyderabad, India, to Hoover. Mohan Kalagotla, the owner of Hyderabad House, almost moved his family to Atlanta to start his restaurant. After being bored during the pandemic, the family decided to try and travel to Atlanta every other weekend to try some different Indian food. Discovering how good the Indian food in the city was, they signed on a house in the area and were going to settle there. The week after, the family got stuck in two hours of traffic in Atlanta. “Eventually what happened was like, we thought Birmingham is the best place because anywhere we want to go we can go in 30-to-45 minutes,” Mohan says. “We thought, OK, our child was growing, we need to take her to some dance classes, music classes and sports and if you’re going to stay in traffic for that time, it’s not going to be productive for our family.”
So, Mohan and his family decided to stay in Birmingham and plan out their restaurant. He has been in Birmingham since 2007, after immigrating to the United States from Hyderabad in 2005 and attending college in Kentucky. He and his wife, Sravani Busireddy, began to plan out their restaurant, saving up their finances and deciding on the setup, menu and interior design. Located in the Riverchase Shopping Centre, Hyderabad House opened on May 22, 2024. Sravani oversaw the interior design, opting for vibrant colors and stand-out centerpieces. One of her inclusions was a tree near the center of the restaurant with bright pink flowers decorating it. There’s also floral pieces and warmly lit lanterns hanging from the ceiling, complementing the white, sleek wallpaper adorned with trees. “The first thing [Sravani] said was ‘I would like to have a wider space so that whenever we try to do some kind of interior, it would look very beautiful,’” Mohan recalls. “The credit goes to her because she’s the one, including the setup, the tables, the chairs, the silverware, everything she handpicked.” HooversMagazine.com 39
Both Mohan and Sravani enjoy cooking at home and test all their dishes in their own kitchen before transferring them to the menu of their restaurant. One of their most popular dishes on the nearly-370item menu are their biryani variations, a traditional Indian dish made with slow-cooked rice, protein and spices. Hyderabad House offers about 45 different biryani meals, including dum biryani with goat, chicken or vegetables. They also have tofu options. There’s a different preparation for each biryani. To make the dum biryani, they first marinate the protein, such as bone-in chicken, with spices overnight. They also soak the rice overnight to infuse flavor. The next morning, they lay out the chicken on a cooking vessel and halfway cook the rice. Once it’s half cooked, the rice is dumped onto the chicken and cooked altogether so the flavors from the chicken transfer to the rice. The process is the same with the paneer, vegetables and goat biryani meals. “Biryanis are our most popular items, and we sell, I would say, around 70 to 100 on the weekdays and around 150 on the weekends,” Mohan says. The biryani meals are served with raita and salan. The raita is a yogurt-based side dish with onions, cilantro and salt. The salan is a tangy condiment with many ingredients and spices: sesame seeds, coconut powder, cloves, elaichi, bay leaves, star anise, black

cardamom, shahjeera, cumin, salt and black peppercorns. The salan is cooked for four-to-five hours because it must be a thick consistency. Once that consistency is reached, it’s a perfect pairing with the biryani. Hyderabad House also has plenty of options for appetizers, one being Chicken 65, a spicy, deepfried chicken dish. Made with sour cream, a little tomato sauce and onion sauce, the chicken is fried in the mixture. Once the chicken is cooking, they also add some
yogurt and spices to give it a tangy, spicy flavor. They then toss in some more sauces before serving. One of Mohan’s personal favorite entrees is the Karaikudi curry. “It could be either chicken or goat or paneer or tofu or vegetables,” he says. “The main base for that one is coconut milk, and along with that, we cook the tomato sauce and onion sauce.” The finished product is a savory, spice heavy dish with a little heat. dishes. To make these, they start with a cashewbased paste to add rich flavor. The creamy yogurt sauce is added along with the protein, such as goat or chicken, and mixed with Afghan spices, including cumin and cardamoms. All their entrees are customizable, allowing the customer to pick the protein they would like in it. One would be remiss not to try any of the many dessert options. “We try to come up with new desserts every other week,” Mohan says. “Whenever time permits for us
in the kitchen, we try to prepare some new desserts for our guests.” Their most popular dessert is the apricot delight, a layered dessert with apricots and cream. The apricots are first soaked overnight and once they are soft enough, they are cooked with sugar for close to three-or-four hours. Once cooked, the apricots are made into puree. They then make a base out of heavy cream, milk, sugar and cardamoms to enhance the flavor. To assemble it, they put the apricots on the

In addition to its many dessert options, Hyderabad House offers authentic Indian drinks for guests to try, such as Thums Up soda, a brand of cola from India. They also make drinks in house, like Mango Lassi, Rajahmundry Rose milk and custard apple shakes. Their Mango Lassi is a creamy, yogurt-based drink made with mangos, and the Rajahmundry milk is a rich, rose-flavored milk. Mohan has been very pleased with the community’s response to Hyderabad House. Although he works during the day as a computer systems analyst, he usually helps manage the place with Sravani at night. “It’s not about the food or about the money all the time, you know?” Mohan says. “It’s about the hospitality, it’s about the service, it’s about the food as well. Husband-and-wife duo Mohan Kalagotla and Sravani Busireddy immigrated to the United States from India in 2007 and 2011. They always wanted to open a restaurant and originally considered Atlanta for its diverse cuisine. After becoming dissuaded with Atlanta traffic, the couple settled on Birmingham as they could get anywhere in the city in around a half hour. During the COVID-19 pandemic, they began drafting plans for their new business venture—Mohan tackling much of the menu and Sravani overseeing the restaurant’s interior design. Finally on May 22, 2024, Hyderabad House opened to the public for the first time. Here, Sravani offers insight into her family’s business. How did you help develop the menu? Most of the items that we serve at our restaurant are most of the items that we cook in our own home. Whenever we both have some time, we try to experiment with new dishes at our house. There are two advantages to that: The first is family time, and the second is trying to prepare some good food for us for either lunch or dinner. Apricot Delight, which is a dessert, is my signature dish. Apart from that, most of the dishes we have on our menu are developed based on our cooking experience and input from renowned chefs. Tucked away in a tranquil retreat, Nick and Stephanie Derzis’ home catches every eye from passersby; its steeply pitched gables and stately front entrance exude a dramatic first appearance, yet the curated flower beds and manicured lawn lend a more relaxing touch to its curb appeal. A Cleveland, Mississippi, native, Stephanie had always longed to be an interior designer, but growing up on a farm, such an artistic craft did not seem lucrative to her parents. Instead, she pursued a career in the medical field, working as a travel nurse and later helping open UAB Hospital’s medsurg ICU. Retiring in 2002 from that career, she focused on raising her son in the coming years, never forgetting that tug on her heart to one day nurture her creative passions. When she and Nick began dating years later, he gave her a gentle push, encouraging her to step out on her own. With him in her corner, she started working at an interior design store where she crossed paths with Carol Smeraglia. Quickly becoming the best of friends, Stephanie and Carol soon branched out to create a design firm of their own—Howarth Haddock Design—in 2019. Their venture into the industry began with a

They sold every single piece they purchased within their first week. Today, Howarth Haddock Design is located at 3564 Lorna Ridge Drive and features hundreds of carefully selected pieces, from sofas to rugs, from paintings to tabletop furnishings. Just as business began blooming, so did Nick and Stephanie’s relationship. After tying the knot and moving in together, the Derzises prioritized renovations, focusing largely on their kitchen. They chose to knock out its anterior wall and elongate the space by five feet. Since they needed more wood for the flooring, knowing they would not find new planks to match years of worn stain, they hired Bluff Park artist Jan Roberts to hand paint an abstract floral design on their floors. After renovating the kitchen, the couple moved from room to room, renovating each space to be a perfect blend of their acquired tastes. Now four years later, their home’s vibrant personality is the epitome of thoughtful design—proof Stephanie says that dreams bloom for those who endure the wait.
Foyer Upon entering the home, the foyer sets the tone for the rest of the home. Its stairwell features a geometrically colored wall transcending up to the second floor. Balusters salvaged from a castle in England balance its whimsicality with a sense of traditionalism. In the corner, an antique chair dating back to the 1800s sits adjacent to a 10-foot-tall marble clock, crafted by Mennonite artisans in Pennsylvania. Dining Room The dining room’s ethereal color palette takes center stage, thanks to its textured, indigo and orchid wallpaper from Thibaut. The Italian chandelier’s convoluted design is conspicuous yet dazzling, casting rays of light throughout the dining suite. The gorgeous, cerulean china was passed down to Nick from his father Col. Kitchen Nick and Stephanie both love the color purple, so they opted for orchid cabinets with unlacquered brass cabinet pulls— compliments of Josh Goff—and even incorporated leatheredpanel doors for their pantry, refrigerator and freezer to match. Walking across the stage in an evening gown, showcasing healthy lifestyle choices and performing a talent might only take a few minutes. But for the young women like Lucy Helland who compete in national scholarship programs, pageants are about dedication, community service and hard work all year long. A sophomore at Hoover High School, Lucy started competing in pageants when she was 10 years old and hasn’t slowed down during the past six years. “I started with local competitions and then state and now national scholarship organizations,” says Lucy, who is the daughter of Nick and Stacy Helland. “We always say when you get bit by the bug, you can’t stop.” Lucy has won titles including Miss Heart of the South Junior Teen and Miss Ultimate USA Junior Teen. This past July, she placed first runner-up in Miss Alabama Volunteer in Oxford, Alabama. Only a week later, she was traveling to Hot Springs, Arkansas, to compete in the inaugural Miss Iconic USA Teen. There were 10 girls in her group at Miss Iconic USA Teen and 67 competing in the whole pageant. The night before she competed, Lucy says she had a dream that she was asked an on-stage question about what the most important quality of a national holder would be. She had that question on her heart all the next day, and when she made it to the Top 6, she was asked that exact question. “It felt like everything was falling into place, so that eased my nerves,” she says. It truly did come together. Later that night, Lucy was named the first-ever Miss Iconic USA Teen. “I was so surprised. I really didn’t think I had done my best, so I was just hoping everything would work out,” Lucy says. “It was a really exciting moment, and I had so many people there to support me.” In addition to winning the crown, Lucy was also named most photogenic and won the overall fitness award. She says fitness has always been important to her, whether that was as a competitive dancer when she was younger or working out with her personal trainer now. “I love to sweat it out. Just tuning everything out and going to the gym feels good to me,” Lucy says. “My mom has always been big on nutrition too, so I’m always mindful of eating whole foods and my overall health.” In every pageant she’s competed in, Lucy says one of her favorite parts is the relationships she’s formed. “I have met some of my best friends through pageantry, including some incredible women from across the country,” Lucy says. “They feel the same things you’re feeling, like stress and disappointment when things don’t go your way. Having that support system in addition to my family has been amazing.” HooversMagazine.com 59

Something most people might be surprised to learn about participating in pageants is how hard each young woman works on her journey to the crown. “I have been putting in work all year long, whether that’s with community service, pageant lessons or doing photoshoots instead of hanging out with my friends,” Lucy says. “It’s a big sacrifice, but we love what we do.” Her commitment to the community will continue during her reign, including sharing her passion for her platform, Limitless Together, which advocates for people with special needs. This cause is especially important to Lucy because her brother was diagnosed with autism two years ago. She has seen the struggle parents experience asking questions and pushing doctors to get a diagnosis firsthand. “Not only do I know the struggles of the individual affected by special needs, but I also know what the family goes through,” Lucy says. She’s currently working with school board members and the superintendent to create a Best Buddy program chapter in the Hoover school system. The program would include a board of student officers and teacher sponsors who work to create one-on-one friendships and connections with people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. She says

she hopes to spread awareness and create events to pair those with special needs with others who share their interests. When she’s not promoting her platform or preparing for her next pageant, Lucy says she enjoys going to the gym, swimming and working at Sunshine Nutrition in Hoover. After high school, she says she’d like to attend either Samford University or the University of Alabama to major in sports broadcasting, occupational therapy or speech-language therapy. While she isn’t sure which national scholarship organization she’d like to compete in next, Lucy says she’s focusing on her current national title and all of the experiences that come with it—like photoshoots, appearances, trips and getting to know her fellow sister queens better. She can also be spotted around town at different events, and she is available for appearances and speaking engagements. One place she can be seen every year is ringing the bell for the Salvation Army at the Bass Pro Shop in the beginning of December. Whether she’s greeting people wearing her crown and sash, going to school or getting ready to step onto the stage, she says she always remembers a quote she was told after winning her first national title: “Whatever is meant for you will not pass you

TUSCALOOSA Closest to the greater Birmingham area is the University of Alabama, located in Tuscaloosa. Although their mascot Big Al is an elephant, they’re more commonly known as the Crimson Tide. The Tide play at Bryant-Denny Stadium, with over 100,000 seats that fans regularly fill up. Dress to represent the team with the classic crimson and white school colors or houndstooth print, popularized by former coach Paul “Bear” Bryant, and learn the song “Dixieland Delight” to feel right at home. For a convenient accommodation close to the action, stay at the Hotel Capstone, which is currently rebranding to Graduate by Hilton. The hotel is located on campus and within walking distance of the stadium. Dine at Avenue Pub for traditional American fare, or try the Thai nachos or pepper jelly chicken sandwich. Need a break from the action? Walk along The Riverwalk, the paved trail along the Black Warrior River near downtown.

AUBURN The next closest SEC destination is the Loveliest Village on the Plains, Auburn University. Just about two hours away from the Birmingham area, the Auburn Tigers play in Jordan-Hare Stadium. Their loud chants of War Eagle originated with an eagle of a Civil War veteran that became their symbol of good luck. Official school colors are orange and navy blue. Stay a short walk away from the stadium at The Collegiate Hotel, a former Auburn dorm renovated by alumni. For a good meal to fuel up before the game, visit the classic Toomer’s Drugs on the corner between campus and downtown. Founded as a drug store in 1896, the establishment Toomer’s Drugs
now serves fresh lemonade, food, ice cream and Auburn memorabilia.

STARKVILLE Less than two and half hours from Birmingham are the Mississippi State Bulldogs in Starkville, Mississippi, occasionally referred to by the nickname, StarkVegas. The Bulldogs play at Davis Wade Stadium in their classic school colors of maroon and white. Mississippi State’s most iconic traditions include the cowbells ringing in victory and the chant of their fight song and slogan, “Hail State.” For a quaint hotel in walking distance from everything on campus and in town, stay at the restored Hotel Chester. Eat some fabulous barbecue at Two Brothers Smoked Meats, where every meal is a hit, especially the pulled pork sandwich.

Just under three hours from Birmingham is the town of Oxford, Mississippi, home of the University of Mississippi “Ole Miss” Rebels. The Rebels play at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium. While in Athens, make sure to try Taqueria Del Sol and taste the enchiladas and house margarita. Another fun dinner option is Paloma Park for Tex-Mex and live music.

knoxville Farthest from Birmingham on this roundup, but close to many hearts, is the University of Tennessee Volunteers, in Knoxville, Tennessee. The Vols are around four hours away, but the drive is worth seeing the iconic checkered end zones at Neyland Stadium.
The Volunteers’ live mascot is Smokey the bluetick coonhound. Make sure to learn the words to “Rocky Top,” as it will play after each touchdown every game. For the ultimate Tennessee experience, stay at the Graduate Knoxville to fully
get in the mood for your game day. Try eating at Sunspot on the edge of campus for a Southwestern, Caribbean and Latin American meal and daily drink specials. While you’re in town, hit up Knoxville’s Market Square for shops and other restaurants.

Why Healthy Leaders Build Healthy Businesses As summer gives way to fall, businesses across Hoover begin preparing for one of the busiest times of the year. Calendars fill with meetings, projects accelerate, holiday planning begins, and organizations focus on finishing the year well. Amid the hustle, one resource often receives the least attention—our mental well-being. For many years, conversations about mental health were reserved for doctor’s offices and private discussions. Today, business leaders are recognizing something important: Mental wellness isn’t just a personal issue; it’s a leadership issue. Every workplace is built on people. When people are healthy, engaged and supported, businesses benefit. Employees communicate more effectively, solve problems more creatively, provide better customer service and contribute to a positive workplace culture. Conversely, chronic stress and burnout can affect morale, productivity, decision-making and relationships throughout an organization. The encouraging news is that fostering a mentally healthy workplace doesn’t require a large budget or complicated initiatives. Often, the greatest impact comes from simple, intentional leadership. It can look like checking in with a team member who seems unusually quiet. It can
mean encouraging employees to take the vacation time they’ve earned or respecting personal time after business hours whenever possible. It’s special to see one of the PGA TOUR Champions’ premier events happen right here in Hoover. I’ve been nearly every year, even back when it was called the Bruno’s Memorial Classic.

I grew up playing basketball with their daughter, Amber, while our dads co-coached the teams. Their café brings people together. Sentimental Spots
Greystone Golf & Country Club Greystone Golf & Country Club holds some of my most treasured memories. My dad taught my sister and me to play golf there, and we both went on to play collegiately. We lost him to esophageal cancer in 2021. Walking those fairways takes me right back to the time spent together as a family.
