HHave you ever noticed how slippery a slope falling in love can be, especially when you least expect it? Many of the brides featured in this issue would agree. Few could point to a single moment when they knew they’d found “the one.”

Reflecting on my own love story, I don’t know that I could either, but my husband, Justin, absolutely can.

It was March 11, 2020. We had only been dating a few weeks at the time but had been close friends for nearly a year. While we were vacationing with friends, we watched the news and heard the name, COVID-19, for the first time.

Foolishly, we celebrated “another two weeks of spring break” with a round of shots. In the weeks that followed, while the world seemed to be going up in flames, Justin remained calm, steady, pragmatic even.

I never understood why.

Our premarital counselor later described Justin as a golden retriever—radiantly positive with a no-quit, solution-oriented mindset. The guy never has a bad day. It’s both admirable and annoying as a black cat like myself.

Fast forward three years, and I watched through streams of tears as Justin recited his wedding vows to me: “Anna, I thought back to our Gulf Shores beach trip in 2020. A thick fog rolled over the beach, and the president came over the TV, announcing border closures because of a new virus called COVID-19. I knew then that even though the future was uncertain, I would be fine because I had you to stand next to. So, I can say for certain that that was the first time I knew I loved you.”

For someone who then still couldn’t even pinpoint her “I knew, too,” moment, that was the most poignant knife to the heart.

Now only a handful of years into our marriage, here’s what I’ve learned: Love is rarely linear. It doesn’t matter when you learned you were in love; although, those moments do make sweet stories. What really matters is how your love for each other endures even the most uncertain of times.

I’m proud to say that Justin has remained my pillar of strength from that day forward, always eager to help me see the bright side of things. If The Killers’ hit single wasn’t about infidelity, I’d totally say his nickname should be “Mr. Brightside.”

So, from us to you, I wish you nothing but a love that lasts, readers. I hope you love big and loud and recklessly, but most of all, I hope you never lose sight of how beautiful venturing into the unknown can be with the one of your dreams.

Love on, readers,

ARTS CULTURE&

CONCRETE DREAMS

From Homewood High School to Buckingham Palace, artist Steve Skipper is proud of his Homewood roots.

IIn April 2024, the Homewood Arts Council presented an exhibition of artwork by Steve Skipper, a native of Rosedale, Alabama. Many in attendance already knew of Steve’s reputation as one of the most popular sports artists in the Southeast.

Exhibition visitors soon learned that the dapper artist had expanded his oeuvre from depicting grass-stained football players and recently completed a portrait of the late Queen Elizabeth II.

Steve believes his early interest in art was largely due to his older brother’s talent for drawing.

“He was very influential and I wanted to be like him but I had a little detour,” Steve says.

He confesses that when he turned 13, he became part of a gang, but three years later, he became a bornagain Christian. He says his new religious fervor made him aware of the source of his artistic gifts.

“I fell in love with Jesus. Having a relationship with Jesus is a completely different dynamic than

most people realize, and one thing that people forget about when they talk about Christ is that He is a creator,” he says, later adding, “nobody teaches creativity better than the Creator.”

As Steve prepared to graduate from Homewood High School, he had two scholarship offers in football and one scholarship in fine art. He chose not to pursue art school.

“I remember the Lord whispering to me that He would teach me everything I needed to know about art,” Steve recalls.

When he went to the University of Alabama, he eventually met Ray Perkins, Paul "Bear" Bryant's successor as head football coach. Ray thought Steve’s artistic ability was remarkable and commissioned him to paint Crimson Tide players.

With his singular talent for depicting movement and capturing intensity, Steve’s paintings effortlessly capture the heightened emotion of a football game.

His oil paintings also offer a lavish color palette and a streamlined elegance that a photograph of the same event cannot equal.

“I was the first African American to do sports art in the Southeast,” Steve says. “A lot of the players and coaches got behind what I was doing.”

He explains that in the 1980s, there were many people who were not in favor of a Black artist undertaking important painting commissions for the university.

Thankfully, players and coaches stood by Steve, attesting to his quality and passion for his calling.

“I’m now ranked one of the top sports artists in the world,” he says.

Since then, every subsequent head football coach retained Steve’s services at the University of Alabama, and he cherishes his friendships with Nick Saban and Gene Stallings. He painted both coaches—the latter with Gene’s late son, John Mark, who had Down syndrome.

While painting for the university, Steve has given much art advice to the artistically inclined relatives of football players, and he has also received requests for advice from people across the world through his social media platforms.

“People ask me a lot of questions of the business side of fine art,” he says. “They are not aware that it’s

The Anointed Homes Art Foundation

After hearing a word from the Lord, Steve Skipper was prompted to create a scholarship initiative to deserving students. The Anointed Homes Art Foundation, as a result, was created and provides fine art scholarships to high school seniors. To learn more or donate, visit steveskipperstudio.com.

possible to make a living doing it, and it’s not just students that are unaware but also their parents.”

He believes that his decision not to pursue formal art training led to a full-circle experience.

Earlier in Steve’s career, Bobby Bowden, the legendary head football coach at Florida State University, commissioned a painting to celebrate his team’s accomplishments.

“Coach Bowden was a Christian himself,” Steve says. “He understood what I had been through, and it was

an honor to do that for him before he passed away.”

Unknowingly, Steve was being prepared for the most astonishing commission of his career through another friendship: Andrew J. Young, Civil Rights activist-turned-United States ambassador to the United Nations. For years, the seasoned diplomat informed Steve about etiquette and doing business with foreign leaders.

“I had no earthly idea why he was teaching me these things,” he says. “I was just a kid that came from Rosedale and Homewood, but God was using him to prepare me for something very big.”

Whatever tomorrow brings, we’ll show up with a plan.

Your future starts right now. And working with a team like ours can help keep you one step ahead, no matter what’s around the corner. Get the one-on-one investing guidance you need for whatever life has in store.

Five years into their friendship, Andrew introduced Steve to a close friend of then-Prince Charles, Rodney Mims Cook, Jr., the founder and president of the National Monuments Foundation. Rodney asked Steve if he would ever be interested in painting a picture of Queen Elizabeth II.

“At the time, I thought this was just a nice question,” Steve chuckles. “I didn’t think he was being serious!”

In 2022, Rodney asked Steve to draw a picture of the queen from a photograph, and while he was working on the drawing, she passed away. Later, when Rodney was invited to the coronation of King Charles III, he

took Steve’s drawing with him to London.

Millions of people watched the coronation, but behind the scenes, Steve’s drawing and exceptional draftsmanship was being discussed in corridors of power.

Rodney later told Steve that it usually takes months for Buckingham Palace to make decisions regarding new artwork for royal residences.

“We’re used to a democracy,” Steve says. “In Buckingham Palace, everything runs on the word of one person. Now, it’s the king, and when he nods, something is done.”

Rather than waiting for months, two weeks later, Steve received the call that he was chosen to paint a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II and Princess Anne for the royal collection. The king had given the “royal nod,” and that’s how a self-taught artist from Rosedale became the first African American person chosen to paint the late queen for the royal collection.

After years of painting mud-splattered football helmets for his sports paintings, capturing her and Princess Anne’s flowerbedecked hats was quite obviously a change in pace for Steve, but he rose to the challenge.

For this portrait, he chose to depict a special occasion when her horse won the Royal Ascot Race in 2013. He explains that her horses usually lost the prestigious race, but that year, her horse—a filly named Estimate—won.

“That day, she had a big smile when everyone applauded her horse,” Steve says.

In the little moments and major milestones of childhood, we are here for our patients and their families – helping, healing, teaching and discovering.

With his painstaking eye for detail, he perfectly captured Queen Elizabeth II’s unbridled joy on his canvas. His extremely detailed technique was perfect for his royal commission.

“I want to make the painting look as realistic as possible, which takes a tremendous number of hours,” he explains.

In total, it took him 2,200 hours to paint this royal commission, along with a dizzying assortment of brushes and tremendous patience.

Visiting London and viewing his painting at its royal home in Buckingham Palace is an eagerly awaited future trip for Steve, and he recently donated a reproduction of this portrait to Edgewood Elementary School.

He recalls that growing up, he did not fully realize the positive impact that desegregation busing and the ensuing diversity in Homewood City Schools would have on his life. His exposure to people from different cultures prepared him to do business in the wider world and be a force for good far beyond the borders of his hometown.

“All the colors that I use are different, but when brought together, they make beautiful artwork,” he explains.

He says that anybody who has been to Homewood High School will say that it is a different experience,

and there is nothing like it.

“The diversity of races is one thing, but the brotherhood—I’m still good friends with people I went to school with—there’s just something special about Homewood,” he says.

He was deeply touched by the response to his exhibition at Homewood City Hall. His father and brother worked for the city of Homewood, and many people who knew his family and who went to school with him attended the reception.

“Some people who had raised me came out,” he says. “For me as an individual, anytime you get support from people in your hometown, it’s very important.”

Although the chance to travel up and down highways, airways and across oceans because of his artwork is great, it still does not beat coming home and being appreciated by his loved ones in his hometown.

“Wherever I go, I never shy away from telling people where I’m from,” he says, adding that he recently met with several people from the British Consulate’s office in Atlanta, Georgia. “When they asked me where I was from, I took a lot of pride in saying, ‘Homewood.’”

Promises of

Prosperity

Celebrating 100 years, the Samford University Legacy League vows to continue blessing students through its transformational scholarship program.

Photos Contributed

TThe Samford University Legacy League is celebrating its centennial this year, but long before its beneficiary had enrolled students, dormitories or even classrooms, mission-minded women’s efforts quietly set forth what would become generations of impactful involvement.

The university’s origins date back to 1841, when land for what would become Howard College was donated by Julia Tarrant Barron. Over time, missionary societies performed service projects to help sustain the school amidst rising costs and challenges.

Sharon Smith, managing director of the Samford University Legacy League, says local women contributed significantly to the fledging institution.

“It was kind of the Wild West,” she says. “There weren’t a lot of opportunities for young men, and these women, wanting their sons to grow up to be godly, educated young men, were willing to get in the trenches and do what it would take to provide the resources so that would happen.”

Sharon says that in those early years, these trailblazers were trying to forge a path for future generations to prosper. A century later, this mission has not changed.

“Students have wonderful success here,” says Julie Taylor, Samford University’s first lady and Legacy League executive director. “That’s not by accident. That’s through intention and the way that Samford is structured and designed to support students and provide a holistic education of mind and heart, so that their whole selves are invited to be nurtured in personhood and intellect and faith.”

Sixty-one years after Howard College’s inception, the Howard College Cooperative Association formed in 1902 to assist in providing school supplies and equipment. Then in 1925, a group of 16 dedicated women approached then-president Dr. John Dawson for his blessing to create the Howard College Auxiliary: a service group aimed at meeting the needs of students and the expanding university.

“There’s nothing really more compelling in terms of an innovative technology that we think will make the biggest impact in the world than Christian higher ed, and Samford is uniquely positioned in a place of strength to really shine and to be an attractive place to attract more and more students,” Julie says.

Over time, the auxiliary played a vital role in fundraising for classrooms, learning materials,

food, clothing. It also funded expanding infrastructure and furnishing dormitories, especially in 1957 when Howard College moved from its East Lake campus to its present site.

When the college was renamed in 1965, honoring philanthropist Frank Park Samford’s contributions to the school, the auxiliary adopted a new name, too—the Samford University Auxiliary. In 1988, the organization established its scholarship endowment, and in 2008, it honed in on providing scholarships for students with significant financial need and challenging circumstances.

The auxiliary was renamed to the Samford University Legacy League in 2011, a year which also included the organization’s inaugural Scholarship Luncheon and Christmas Home Tour. These fundraising events, along with the annual Scholarship Celebration, are open to the community.

In the last 15 years, hundreds of thousands of dollars have been awarded to deserving individuals. Now, the organization’s generous scholarships are awarded to incoming freshmen and carry them through four years of undergrad.

Other blessings the organization provides include monthly dinners for the cohort, book stipends, items to furnish students’ dorm rooms and the support of

the Legacy League’s student care coordinator and volunteers.

“We’re in a position of really responding to the needs of this group of this student population better than ever, and Samford will benefit from a student population that has students of high need and hard lives and that will strengthen the student body by offering various perspectives of what life looks like,” Julie says.

Currently, there are 25 students in the Legacy League cohort. Some, Sharon says, have experienced the death or disability of a parent, abandonment, parental substance abuse and homelessness. Nearly every student in the cohort has experienced serious life challenges.

“We have a student who graduated in April whose mom had died of ovarian cancer, and within a year, his father was killed in a car wreck, his grandfather died, his uncle died, the big adults in his family, just one after another,” she says, later adding, “you name hard, and someone in the Legacy League cohort has faced it.”

While the Legacy League cannot change the cards students are dealt, Julie says the organization can help students turn them into a winning hand through financial support, academic and spiritual guidance and fervent belief in their innate abilities.

She describes one student who nearly dropped out during move-in weekend because he couldn’t bear to leave his mother, who needed around-the-clock care.

“Those are the types of burdens that they’re carrying around as college students,” she says. “To say that the rigorous classroom experience is the only thing they have to confront here is not at all the case. They’re dealing with a lot more than that and have found in this community a place of resource and trust that’s been built over time.”

Today, the Legacy League is a force with which to be reckoned, boasting more than 800 members with ages varying from 22 to 100 years old. The organization has

29th YEAR

“We’re supposed to love our neighbors as ourselves, and loving our neighbors means seeing who’s kicked to the curb in life and then being the Samaritan who notices, helps them.”
Julie Taylor

also awarded at least 225 scholarships worth more than $2.1 million.

In its endowment fund, the Legacy League has raised a whopping $8.3 million. These life-changing scholarships affirm the belief that everyone deserves to receive a college education, and students of all walks of life, no matter their burdens or setbacks, will receive opportunities life never before afforded them.

Rick, a former scholarship recipient, grew up in Haiti, where he and his siblings barely attended school because it was cost prohibitive.

After his family moved to Little Haiti in Miami, Florida, Rick worked hard to learn English and make up for lost time in summer school. His high school math teacher was a Samford alumna who introduced him to the idea of going to college.

It was one he had never considered before.

In a video interview with Sharon, on samford. edu/legacyleague/scholarships, Rick expressed his gratitude for his former teacher and the pathway that the Legacy League provided for him.

“I’m so grateful I got to have that experience of being the first in my family to go to college, graduate and I could say that I’m doing well right now, and I just want to thank God for you guys because you guys really helped me out,” he says in the video.

Rick later explains that he always tells his wife that had he stayed in Miami, had he not gone to college, he doesn’t know where he would be. The Legacy League Scholarship completely changed his trajectory.

Rick now serves part-time in the U.S. Air Force

and also works in the banking industry. Within the last year, he and his wife also welcomed their first child.

“I have such joy when I think about the fact that little RJ is growing up in a home with these

parents whose story is so different than the story that Rick came from,” Sharon says. “That’s where you see generational change happening.”

Julie says generational change is such a powerful fruit of the Legacy League’s labors. She believes the organization acts as the hands and feet of Jesus, and there’s no better way to live out the Gospel than by caring for those less fortunate.

“We’re supposed to love our neighbors as ourselves, and loving our neighbors means seeing who’s kicked to the curb in life and then being the Samaritan who notices, helps them,” she says, later adding, “God has made a way for (these students) so far, and we are part of a team that will make a way for them to continue.”

Once a group of mothers’ dreams, after 100 years, the Samford University Legacy League is now living proof that serving the least of these ensures blessings that extend across generations, opening doors that once were thought closed forever. Its promise, first cemented in 1925, remains the same today as it did then: to forge a way forward, transforming lives one service at a time.

A Garden Party Affair

The Southern Planner, one of the Southeast’s premier wedding planning and design cohorts, offers their tips and tricks for throwing the perfect “garden party-themed” event.

A garden-party celebration offers a quiet kind of luxury—an atmosphere that feels romantic, effortless and timeless. Rooted in the charm of elegant outdoor gatherings from generations past, today’s garden-party aesthetic blends soft refinement with modern whimsy. More and more brides are gravitating toward this style for the way it elevates a wedding day without feeling overly formal: gentle color palettes, heirloom-inspired details and naturally beautiful venues create an experience that is both elevated and inviting. As this look continues to rise in popularity, the question becomes how to execute it well. Here are the key elements we recommend when creating a true garden-party moment.

Florals

Florals are the heartbeat of the style. Choose blooms that feel freshly gathered—roses, hydrangeas, sweet peas and other soft, airy textures. Pastels or muted tones maintain that romantic, garden-grown feel and bring a sense of natural abundance to the day.

Wedding Dresses & Attire

Attire should echo the garden’s beauty. Gowns with floral appliqué, embroidered textures, soft movement or whimsical accessories like gloves or capes complement the setting and enhance the romance.

Tablescapes

Tablescapes allow the theme to fully bloom. Traditional china, layered linens, delicate glassware, petite floral clusters, patterned napkins and handwritten place cards add depth and charm. These details anchor the look and invite guests to linger.

Pro Tips from The Southern Planner

At The Southern Planner, we’re seeing more and more brides gravitate toward the gardenparty aesthetic. It’s a style that feels elevated yet approachable. Matching invitations and paper goods to the theme helps set the tone from the very beginning, while tea foods, light bites and signature beverages continue the experience throughout the day. Thoughtful touches like coordinated décor, layered tablescapes and romantic attire ensure every element works together. When done intentionally, this style creates a day that feels cohesive, elegant and unforgettable—exactly the kind of celebration our clients dream of.

A PARTY FAVOR

Whether as a thoughtful groomsman’s gift or as a treat for guests at a wedding reception, cigars elevate any occasion, bonding people together, slowing down time and transforming single moments into lasting memories. Terry Wester, co-owner of Trussville Cigar Co., believes these shared mementos represent a bride and groom’s gratitude for those closest in their lives. Here, he discusses four different types of popular cigars and what to pair with them for any celebratory event.

PHOTOS BY

1. Sun Grown

Grown in abundance of natural light, Sun Grown cigars’ flavor profiles are richer and zestier than their shadegrown competitors. Smoking a C.L.E. 40th Anniversary Robusto, for example, one will taste a combination of nuts, cedar and touches of honey and graham crackers.

PAIRS WELL WITH:

Rum, bourbon and cognac

Slow-roasted meats

TERRY’S RECOMMENDATIONS:

Perdomo 10th Anniversary

Arturo Fuente Chateau Fuente

2. Connecticut

Famed for their golden wrappers, Connecticut cigars deliver mellow, creamy notes and are ideal for those new to cigar smoking. A classic, the Perdomo 10th Anniversary Champagne, is a nice, low-key smoke, making it a neat choice for group settings with diverse crowds.

PAIRS WELL WITH:

White wine, cappuccinos and lattes

Charcuterie and crème brûlée

TERRY’S RECOMMENDATIONS:

C.L.E. Connecticut 6x60 Perdomo 10th Anniversary Champagne

3. Maduro

A direct contrast to the Connecticut, the Maduro cigar is defined by its toasted, aged leaves and longer, fuller body. First-time triers are often surprised by these cigars’ tastes of dark chocolate, cocoa, molasses and baking spices—smoother, richer flavors that aren’t as harsh as one might expect given its presentation.

PAIRS WELL WITH:

Merlot, espressos and Single-Malt Scotch Smoked meats, aged cheddar and toffee

TERRY’S RECOMMENDATIONS:

Oliva V Double Robusto

Kristoff Veinte Perfecto

4. Arturo Fuente Rare Pink

One of Terry’s favorite brands, the Arturo Fuente Rare Pink’s line fundraises for breast cancer research. This elegant smoke features an Ecuadorian wrapper and a Dominican-grown filler for a well-rounded profile, giving off hints of fruit and floral undertones.

PAIRS WELL WITH:

Bourbon and aged rum

Dark chocolate and nuts

TERRY’S RECOMMENDATIONS:

Queen of Hearts

The bodice features architectural, orchid-inspired construction with sharp, folded angles that frame the sweetheart neckline in subtle, sophisticated drama. The dropped waistline transitions into a voluminous skirt that flows in rich, liquid folds— capturing the light with every movement and creating an effortless sense of luxury.

Timeless, elegant and majestically refined, ball gowns are perfect for brides who seek elevated grandeur and unforgettable presence.

COLUMN silhouette the

DRESS NAME: Orchid Petal

STYLE: Column · Deep V-Neckline · Embroidered Bodice

Orchid Petal is a refined fusion of softness and structure, created for the bride who embraces modern elegance shaped through couture craftsmanship. The gown features a beautifully embroidered bodice with a deep V-neckline, delicately framed by floral lace that adds dimension, femininity and a quiet radiance to the upper silhouette. Subtle beaded accents trace the waistline, offering a gentle shimmer that defines and elongates the figure with polished precision.

The skirt, tailored from luminous Mikado, extends into a sleek column silhouette that moves with effortless grace. Its clean, uninterrupted lines showcase minimalism at its finest, allowing the artistry of the bodice to take center stage. A detachable train elevates the look with dramatic fluidity, giving the bride the versatility to shift from ceremony grandeur to reception sophistication.

Orchid Petal is designed for the modern bride who cherishes the poetry of floral detail and the purity of a timeless silhouette.

A-LINE silhouette the

DRESS NAME: Orchid Sculpture STYLE: A-Line with Slit · Regular Waistline · Straight Neckline

Orchid Sculpture is a celebration of modern minimalism elevated by sculptural, couture artistry. Crafted from luminous silk Mikado, this gown is designed for the bride who commands attention with quiet confidence and effortless grace.

The strapless bodice showcases a clean, architectural straight neckline—sleek, structured and impeccably contoured to the form. At the waist, an oversized couture bow becomes the gown’s defining statement piece. Expertly folded and voluminous, it blooms like a satin sculpture, adding dramatic dimension while preserving the gown’s pure, refined silhouette.

The A-line skirt, tailored from luxurious silk Mikado, flows with soft, understated movement. A modern slit introduces subtle allure, while the fabric’s gentle sheen catches the light beautifully, creating the impression of floating softness and contemporary radiance.

A-line silhouettes are timeless—perfect for the classic bride.

MERMAID silhouette the

DRESS NAME: Orchid Blossom

STYLE: Mermaid · Straight Neckline · Lace Bolero

Orchid Blossom is a breathtaking, twopiece bridal ensemble that blends modern sophistication with delicate couture artistry. The look begins with an exquisitely crafted lace bolero, designed off-the-shoulder for a soft, romantic frame around the neckline and décolletage. Each appliqué is handplaced, creating a dimensional garden of 3D rosettes that bloom across the bodice. The intricate texture brings depth, movement and a sculptural floral elegance reminiscent of atelier couture.

Beneath the lace layer, a sleek, straightneckline corset offers clean architectural structure and a refined contemporary silhouette. The balance between the soft, blooming lace and the minimalist corsetry creates a striking interplay of romance and modernity.

The ensemble transitions into a sculpted crepe mermaid skirt that hugs the figure with precision, elongating the bride’s silhouette and enhancing her natural curves. Its smooth, uninterrupted lines offer a luxurious contrast to the intricate texture above, while the gentle flare at the hem adds movement and understated drama.

Mermaid silhouettes create a modern, romantic statement and are designed for the bride who cherishes fine craftsmanship, loves artistic detail and seeks a gown that embodies both softness and strength.

HOW DID YOU TWO MEET?

We met a week before our freshman year started at Ole Miss. We have been best friends ever since!

HOW DID YOU KNOW YOUR SPOUSE WAS THE ONE?

I don’t think there was one moment that I thought he was “the one.” All I can say is that from the first hour I spent with him, I knew he would be in my life forever.

HOW DID HE PROPOSE?

It was a huge surprise! We were alone for the weekend at Lake Martin, enjoying the last bit of summer, and the first night we were there, he proposed on the dock at sunset. The sky was pink, and we had gotten all dressed up with the promise to go try one of the restaurants around the lake. Instead, he had secretly tucked a nice bottle of champagne into his overnight bag, and we stayed in to celebrate—just the two of us. Later, as we FaceTimed our families and friends, I realized he hadn’t told a single soul! It was so fun seeing everyone’s shocked faces!

WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST DANCE SONG, AND HOW DID YOU CHOOSE IT?

We danced to “Stand By Me” by Ben E. King. We picked it on the way to our first dance lesson. Choosing a first song was a bit of a dispute, and “Stand By Me” was the first one we both agreed on.

HOW DID YOU TWO MEET?

Fittingly, our story began at a wedding, my best friend’s. All night, our eyes kept meeting across the room, and there was an unspoken pull between us. After the reception, we stood in the parking lot talking for more than an hour. That night quietly became the beginning of everything.

HOW DID YOU KNOW YOUR SPOUSE WAS THE ONE?

As our relationship grew, so did our appreciation for each other’s backgrounds, traditions and values. Planning two weddings— one honoring Rohit’s Indian culture and one reflecting a traditional Western celebration—felt like a natural extension of our love.

HOW DID HE PROPOSE?

Rohit proposed in the same quiet, peaceful place we both love: a place full of special memories, including when he first asked me to be his girlfriend. It felt beautifully full circle, when he chose it again to ask me to be his wife. The moment was private and heartfelt, just as I had always imagined. He got down on one knee in the exact spot where we took our first photo as an official couple.

WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST DANCE SONG, AND HOW DID YOU CHOOSE IT?

At our Indian wedding, we shared a choreographed Bollywood dance to a mashup of “You’re My Love” and “Maahi Ve,” two of Rohit’s childhood favorites. For our traditional Western wedding, our first dance was to “L-O-V-E” by Nat King Cole, a nod to one of my favorite movies, “The Parent Trap.” Together, both dances felt like a true reflection of our story.

HOW DID YOU TWO MEET?

We both went to Auburn University and had mutual friends set us up to be each other’s date to a semi-formal dance.

HOW DID YOU KNOW YOUR SPOUSE WAS THE ONE?

Patrick and I both agree that there wasn’t a particular moment where we realized we found “the one.” As we started dating, we began doing everyday life together, and all of the little things added up. Even in the mundane, we truly have so much fun together. We both push each other in our faith and to be the best versions of ourselves. Our biggest advice to anyone thinking about “the one” is to marry your best friend.

HOW DID HE PROPOSE?

Patrick told me we were driving down to Lake Martin to have brunch with his family. Instead, we ended up at his family’s farm near Lake Martin. His sweet sister and brother-in-law set it up so beautifully. After that, we went back to his parents’ lake house, and both of our families were there to celebrate with us!

WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST DANCE SONG, AND HOW DID YOU CHOOSE IT?

“You Are” by Lionel Richie was the song to which we danced. We chose it because we love the lyrics and how they remind us of how much fun our relationship is!

HOW DID YOU TWO MEET?

We met through a mutual friend, when I was in high school and he was going to college.

HOW DID YOU KNOW YOUR SPOUSE WAS THE ONE?

This might sound cliché, but there was no single moment. I just knew! There was a different feeling with him than anyone I had ever met in life. From the moment we met, our lives were intertwined.

HOW DID HE PROPOSE?

He took me to my family’s lake house in the winter and proposed on the dock. It was just us two with nobody else around. It was beautiful!

WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST DANCE SONG, AND HOW DID YOU CHOOSE IT?

Our song was “Lady May” by Tyler Childers. That song has always had special meaning to us and is a song we often play late at night to dance with each other.

HOW DID YOU TWO MEET?

We met in the spring of our first year of medical school at UAB, when our class met to socialize after a test. However, we had mutual friends at Auburn University and are sure we crossed paths before then. In the following months, our relationship transitioned from us being classmates to study partners to friends to significant others. Our first date was, fittingly, a concert at Avondale Brewing Co.

HOW DID YOU KNOW YOUR SPOUSE WAS THE ONE?

It has been so easy to love each other well. Our relationship has been steady and sure from the beginning, and we always had peace that we were right for one another. We align in the big and small ways, and we have found balance in the places where we differ. There was no “one moment” for either of us, just a constant confidence in our partnership that made marriage seem like the most natural step in the world.

HOW DID HE PROPOSE?

We were going to dinner to celebrate my birthday, when he took a detour to Crest Road. We often drive down Crest Road (ever since our second date) to overlook the Birmingham skyline during sunset. That time, he took the opportunity to propose! We called our family and then went to a private dinner at Vino where our first dinner date took place to celebrate over bubbly.

WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST DANCE SONG, AND HOW DID YOU CHOOSE IT?

Our song was “Nothing Can Change This Love” by Sam Cooke. It is old school in sound, and we felt like the lyrics represent a love that lasts through all that life may bring. Kevin has a love of live music, so it was one of the tougher decisions we made in the wedding-planning process.

HOW DID YOU TWO MEET?

We met briefly at Auburn University our freshman year, and we ended up being next-door neighbors our junior and senior years. It was 2020, and my roommates, JP and I all had COVID. However, he was the only one of his roommates who had it. He then came over to our house, and we watched movies all day— the six of us. The rest is history!

HOW DID YOU KNOW YOUR SPOUSE WAS THE ONE?

There isn’t one specific “aha” moment when I realized JP was the one. It happened gradually. His patience and calm, reassuring nature is a perfect complement to my crazy. He makes me the happiest I’ve ever been, and ever since we started dating, I couldn’t imagine my life without him.

HOW DID HE PROPOSE?

JP tricked me into getting dressed up to take Christmas photos with his family at the Birmingham Botanical Gardens. When we arrived, I asked where his nephews were, and he got down on one knee! We went to Freddy’s Wine Bar after the proposal, and he surprised me again by having all of our closest friends and family there to celebrate with us.

WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST DANCE SONG, AND HOW DID YOU CHOOSE IT?

We danced to “Free” by Otis Kane. JP planned a surprise trip to Barcelona, Spain, for the two of us for my 26th birthday last December a few weeks after he proposed. We did an engagement photoshoot there, and the photographer made a video of us to the song, “Free.” It was the first time either of us had heard it, and we fell in love with it! It will always be such a special song to us.

HOW DID YOU TWO MEET?

We met on a dating app in January 2024. We didn’t talk much but just planned a date right away. Our first date was to Hop City in Pepper Place. William tried to play it so cool, but I knew he was interested and so was I!

HOW DID YOU KNOW YOUR SPOUSE WAS THE ONE?

On our first date, I mentioned that Bettola was probably my favorite restaurant in Birmingham. For our second date, William surprised me by taking me there. He persuaded me (an Auburn fan) to join him at the Alabama basketball game the day after, and we had the best time. He was easy to be around, kind of goofy and really smart. We have been together ever since! He is my best friend.

HOW DID HE PROPOSE?

At the time, William lived in an apartment in downtown Birmingham with a fantastic view. We had always talked about going up there to drink a glass of wine before dinner, so that’s what we had planned to do that night. I was totally shocked when we got up there. He had a photographer there to capture everything, which was so nice. We took a few pictures and then went to dinner— just the two of us.

WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST DANCE SONG, AND HOW DID YOU CHOOSE IT?

“Beyond” by Leon Bridges was our first dance song. When William and I first started dating, I remember sitting on the couch with him and listening to that exact song. After it played, I said, “This would be a really great first dance song for someone’s wedding!” We used to listen to it in the car all the time, too, so it just felt fitting.

HOW DID YOU TWO MEET?

Our first official meeting happened while I was in Tuscaloosa for my orientation at the University of Alabama. He convinced me to sneak away from my Bama Bound group to grab coffee with him. That day marked the beginning of something really special.

HOW DID YOU KNOW YOUR SPOUSE WAS THE ONE?

I knew Patrick was the one because of the steady, intentional way he approached life and our relationship. He’s incredibly surefooted and forward thinking, someone who carefully considers decisions and never acts impulsively. That kind of stability gave me a deep sense of trust in him early on. From the very beginning, there was never an awkward stage between us. Our connection was instant, and our conversations were meaningful and deep right from the start.

HOW DID HE PROPOSE?

We went to see the sunrise on the beach in Sullivan’s Island, South Carolina, and he had me turn around while he was taking pictures of me. When I turned back around, he was on one knee!

WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST DANCE SONG, AND HOW DID YOU CHOOSE IT?

We chose “And So It Goes” by Billy Joel as our first dance song because it beautifully captures the essence of our journey together. Like any meaningful relationship, ours has had its share of ups and downs, and one of the things we’ve both had to work on over time is allowing ourselves to be truly vulnerable with one another. This song felt like a quiet, powerful promise to open our hearts fully, to wear them on our sleeves and to surrender to the kind of love that asks for honesty, tenderness and trust. It was the perfect reflection of the commitment we were making that day.

Honeymooners’ Harbor

Mackinac Island: an idyllic, charming island town located in Lake Huron between Michigan’s upper and lower peninsulas. Since no motor vehicles are allowed on the island, the main forms of transportation are walking, bicycling or traveling via horse-drawn carriages. The island is full of Victorian architecture from when it became a popular destination in the 1800s and was named the number-one island in the continental United States by Travel + Leisure in 2022. Visit the island to be transported to a simple lifestyle of carriage rides and leisurely walks, paired with the natural blue water and rock formations.

where to stay

The island can be reached by flying into either Pellston Regional Airport or Chippewa County International Airport. Take a shuttle from the airport to Mackinaw City, then a 20-minute ferry ride to the island. Once you arrive, there’s no shortage of unique, beautiful inns and bed-and-breakfasts at which to stay.

Chippewa Hotel Waterfront is located across the street from Historic Fort Mackinac. It is home to Pink Pony on Mackinac Island, an ever-iconic restaurant and bar famed for its pink interior and American fare. The hotel also boasts a large hot tub that visitors will adore. Mission Point Resort’s beautiful 18-acre property sits on the edge of the lake, providing views from the lawn and the guestroom windows. It’s located on the sunrise side of the island and is the only dog-friendly resort on the island.

Lake View Hotel dates back to 1858 and boasts a beautiful, Victorian exterior with fully renovated rooms inside. It’s located on Main Street, just steps away from the shops and restaurants that the downtown entertainment district has to offer. Lake View also provides an indoor pool and hot tub—the only one on the island.

First opening its doors in 1889 for summer tourists, Grand Hotel stands atop a hill with its grand porch overlooking the lawn. The hotel is home to 13 different restaurants and bars, and it maintains old-fashioned elegance by requiring elevated evening attire after 6:30 p.m. in the main areas.

WHERE TO EAT

Mackinac Island is known for its world-famous fudge, and the shops collectively make more than 10,000 pounds of fudge every day while in season. The island also features more than a dozen fudge shops, and tourists can take a stroll down Main Street, trying out the free samples. The original Mackinac Island fudge shop, The Original Murdick’s Fudge, notably makes its treats on a marble table in front of guests, inviting them in with the sweet smell of fresh fudge.

For dinner, go to The Carriage House in Hotel Iroquois for waterfront dining, a nightly pianist and classic American cuisine, or try Kingston Kitchen at the Village Inn for American classics with a Jamaican flair. Woods Restaurant also serves American and European foods with a slight twist: in a grand Tudor mansion. Adjacent is Bobby’s Bar, which has the oldest duckpin bowling alley in the U.S. Pink Pony comes highly recommended as a place to get a drink and a bite to eat.

To top off the evening, take a sunset stroll on the Main Street Boardwalk, and sample ice cream from Sadie’s Ice Cream Parlor, located at both Grand Hotel and on Main Street.

WHAT TO DO

What is there not to do? Mackinac Island offers the perfect amount of vacation activities for both a relaxing and invigorating trip. For a romantic and relaxing honeymoon, curl up with a good book in the Adirondack chairs on the lawn overlooking the water at Mission Point Resort. This lawn is open for any visitors to the island.

Mission Point Resort and Grand Hotel also offer spa-andsalon options to enhance vacation relaxation. Tour the island in style by taking a horse-drawn carriage tour with Mackinac Island Carriage Tours. Spend a morning golfing on The Jewel, and take their horse-drawn carriage ride in between nines.

For the active couple, spend time together out on the water kayaking and snorkeling with Great Turtle Kayak Tours. This company also has an option for kayak cruises at both sunrise and sunset. Take a boat tour around the island with Ugly Anne Tour Company to learn more about the island and northern Michigan. Take in the views by walking, running or biking the island’s more than eightmile-perimeter on M-185, the carless highway. Along the way, you’ll pass by Arch Rock and countless other lookoffs and beach spots.

For a taste of history, visit Historic Fort Mackinac—the oldest building in Michigan—first built in 1715. It was used in the War of 1812 and has 14 restored buildings on the property that are open to the public. To visit other historic sites and buildings on the island, tickets can be purchased for less than $20 for adults.

Essential Outlooks

The Island’s Most Scenic Spots and Best Photo Destinations

On a walkable island with so many natural rock formations and beach sunset opportunities, make sure to get out to these spots to appreciate the natural beauty of the island.

Arch Rock absolutely tops the list for must-see views. This iconic rock formation arches over the bright teal water and makes for a stunning backdrop. The view can be reached by climbing up 207 steps or by taking a carriage.

The East Bluff is made up of a cliff of absolutely incredible views overlooking the water.

Make sure to take the short trip from town to see Sugar Loaf, a 75-foot-tall stone tower in the middle of the forest.

Sunset Rock is about a 45-minute-long walk from downtown, but it is worth it to see one of the island’s best views of the sun setting over the water.

Even the easiest option is still a stunning way to watch the sunset. After dinner, take a stroll on the boardwalk not far from downtown and enjoy the company that gathers to watch the sun paint the sky orange over the water.

Favorite Paintings

“Little Professor Book Store”

One I’m most proud of is “Little Professor Book Store.” It won second place in the Plein Air Division of NOAPS Exhibition (National Oil and Acrylic Painters’ Society). The event was hosted in Birmingham last year and included both national and international artists.

Drawing Inspiration

Walking through the Neighborhood

My husband and I walk 3-4 miles in Homewood every day, and I’m inspired to paint this city continuously. It could be of Ms. Ann and her pup in her yard, a woman reading a book on her charming porch or one of many enchanting Homewood houses. There are endless possibilities here.

Sentimental Spots

Finding a Home in Homewood

I paint daily in my home studio here in Homewood. Back in 2006, when looking for a home in this wonderful community, we found a 1935 brick Tudor. We loved the stucco walls, barrel ceiling and all the charm. In opening what we thought was a closet door, we found a stairwell that led upstairs to a wonderful room with six windows. I knew instantly it was the perfect studio and perfect house for us.

Fostering a Love for the Arts

Homewood Arts Council

The Homewood Arts Council does a great job of hosting exhibits in the gallery in Homewood City Hall. I’m very excited to see the opening of a new gallery on Broadway Street, Gallery Annette. Also, The Red Dot Gallery, which has been around for more than 20 years, has instructional classes for kids and adults.

Artistic Memories

Painting En Plein Air

About 13 years ago, Jennifer Harwell owned a gallery in SoHo. She invited me to join her to paint on location in the area outside of SoHo Social. It was very crowded, and many people gathered around to watch us paint. As it was my first time painting en plein air with an audience, I was terrified. I learned that it’s always good to push yourself out of your comfort zone because that’s when you grow.
